Mandarmani Beach: Pristine, Tranquil and Away from the Chaos

Mandarmani Beach ENG cover

Mandarmani Beach – just a long 4 hours drive from Kolkata on the NH16 i.e. 170 km drive from Kolkata will take you to the beautiful and calm village of Mandarmani situated in the East Medinipur district of West Bengal . Adjacent to this village is the virgin sea beach of Mandarmani.

This pristine beach is a popular weekend destination for many. With a lot of budget-friendly resorts and numerous watersports, the sea beach experiences a huge rush of tourists on the weekends.

Table of Contents

Mandarmani beach: my escape from the chaos.

Since I wanted to avoid this crazy crowd of tourists, after a little browsing I finally found a resort facing the Mandarmani beach which had good reviews but due to its an offbeat location not many people knew about it. Not wasting any time I booked a room for myself for 2 days.

I started on Friday at 7 am from Kolkata and reached Mandarmani at around 11 am by car. It took me 30 minutes to reach the resort and I was proud of myself. I was given the last room of the resort and it faced the endless sea beach. Being my first visit to a beach I was very excited to see Mandarmani beach and that I would be hearing the sound of the waves, watching the sunrise and the sunset, just sitting inside my room.

I never really knew what was waiting for me there!

Dumping my luggage on the bed I went for a bath. The plan for the afternoon was to take a power nap, eat good seafood and watch the sunset sitting inside my room with a cup of hot coffee and in the evening when I’ll be reading an Agatha Christie’s thriller.

All in vain!

Those Red Things Crawling At the Mandarmani Beach

After the bath, I went outside to order my lunch before going for a nap. I ordered the food and was returning to my room when I noticed some fishing boats on the beachside. And some kind of red thing crawling beneath the boat. I went to the beach to take a closer look and I saw thousands and thousands of them on the beach – painted ghost red crabs!

Red Crabs Crawling At Mandarmani Beach

Even though I was scared but I approached them and watched them get inside their holes as they saw me coming. It was the fun play of hiding and seek with them.

Stepping on the sand I felt very free and my exhaustion was gone. Leaving the crabs behind I walked towards the sea. It was vast and endless, calm and peaceful, sounds of the waves crashing on the shore filled my heart with joy.

Sitting down by the sea beach I saw people enjoying jet skiing, parasailing, speed boat, banana boat side, and even horse ride at a distance. Later some locals told me that they don’t allow cars and ATVs on the beach nowadays because it was destroying the beach.

Nature’s Retreat

I was very happy to see the villagers taking initiative towards keeping the beach clean and free from plastics. As I returned to my resort I saw the sunset in front of me and the fishermen returning home . I felt alive and I was waiting eagerly for the next day.

Fishermen and Boats at Mandarmani Beach

But it wasn’t over! Nature was just not giving me any chance to rest.

When Mandarmani Beach Was No More There

As the time for dinner approached I watched the waves approaching. It came closer with time. Maybe it’s obvious for everyone but as I said, it was my first time on a beach and I was freaking scared. At around 11 pm the waves were crashing by the boundary rocks of the resort. The beach I was roaming (Mandarmani Beach) around in the morning was no more there. I could feel the water drops as the waves crashing on the rocks.

Waves hitting my hotel boundary at Mandarmani Beach

Keeping aside all my shame and hesitation I asked the manager if this was normal and he said ‘Yes!’ This was happening due to the high tide and low tide and it’ll be gone by 1 am or 2 am.

Yes! Geography! I should have been more attentive in geography classes.

Even though a little fear was still there but I enjoyed the rest of the night. As the manager said the waves started to move away as the clocked ticked 1:15. But before I went to sleep I saw the fishermen’s boat start again in the middle of the night. They would return in the morning after staying in the sea for the whole night.

Watersports at Mandarmani Beach

The next morning I saw the sunrise, watched the fishermen return, went there, talked to them, and went for a walk alongside the sea beach. A 30 minutes walk from my resort took me to the busy shops selling seashells, small jewelry made of Jhinuk (seashells), and small handmade gifts. I bought a lot of small gifts for my friends and family and sat at a food stall to drink coconut water.

Parasailing at Mandarmani Beach

The previous day I talked to a local who has a food stall beside the beach about watersports and how to book them. They gave me the information in details and I won’t say it wasn’t a bit more expensive than what I expected at Mandarmani Sea beach but since I planned this for a long time I opted for spending a few bucks on them.

The prices for jet skiing was 800 bucks for one person, speed boat was 1200 bucks per head, parasailing was around 1500 bucks per head. These prices are totally negotiable and I bargained a lot with them.

The time slot I choose was in the evening. You can also go and enjoy these in the morning before the high tide.

So I came back to my resort and went for jet skiing, enjoyed a speed boat ride and came back in the afternoon to enjoy my lunch.

Food and Final Call

For non-vegetarians (and especially a Bengali) and seafood lovers, Mandarmani is simply a food paradise. You get a lot of fish, fresh local fish options along with crabs and shrimps. You can go and buy them fresh from the fishermen and ask your hotel staff to cook them for you as well as the local shops offer tea, coffee, Maggi and also dishes like fish fry, prawn or shrimp curry, crab curry, etc.

The evening was spent collecting seashells and playing with the waves.

It was my last night at the beach and I finally read the book, enjoyed 4 cups of coffee, listened to songs, had dinner, repacked my bags and went to sleep.

Travel is Not Only About Picture-Perfect Destinations

We all go through a lot of stress and workload throughout the week. Though I’m a student it’s no different for me. Morning college, whole day tuitions, the busy city life doesn’t really leave me with much time for myself. The weekends are usually for watching movies, long drives or gossiping with friends in a new cafe.

This time I tried something new and I was really happy at the end.

Sunset at Mandarmani Beach

I would miss this breeze, the sound of the waves, the peacefulness of the sea beach, the naughty red crabs, the speed boat ride. Yet I wasn’t sad. I knew I’ve found another place I love and I’ll be coming back very soon and maybe this time with a lot of friends who would encourage me for parasailing.

Bidding goodbye to the sea beach I started for Kolkata with a smile on my face.

When you travel you don’t think about the comfort or the picture-perfect destinations. All you think about is the experience and the new things you get to learn and feel there. You enjoy yourself, you get to learn about your abilities, likes, and dislikes. And that is what makes your holiday special for you.

Thank you 😊 .

If i want to visit this place .. Nice informations about this plac..so Wht is the good time for visit.. Is this season is perfet ?Never heared abt this place. Place located in?

According to me winter is the best time to visit this beach i.e. in the months of Nov to March. And if you catch a full moon night there then your stay is going to be perfect. Mandarmani is a small village located in East Midnapore district of West Bengal. You’ll get a lot of bus and train options from Kolkata . You can also hire a car and enjoy a long drive from Kolkata.

Mandarmani beach is every traveler’s dream come true. I love such quiet beaches, away from the hustle and bustle of maddening city crowd. Would love to visit this year.

Yes! You should and you’ll love it. Do let me know about your experience. 😊

Delhifundos2014 – I can totally get you . When I went to Mandarmani I too thought that I’ll be able to go and visit the other beaches since they all are very close . But as you can understand, I was really enjoying my time at Mandarmani so I too changed my mind . I highly recommend Mandarmani to anyone who likes to explore the offbeat places avoiding the crowd . It’s really very peaceful and quiet over there. But I think you are mistaking between Shankarpur beach and Mukutmanipur. The beaches you’ll get to see near Digha are Tajpur , Mandarmani and Old and New Digha sea beach in East Midnapore and Mukutmanipur is in Bankura district . Please come soon and do let us know about your experience. Thank you . 😊

Thank you Abha . Glad to know that you liked my blog and found it helpful . Do tell us if you have any more queries about the beach .

Thank you 🙏 😊

We spent 2 days and 3 nights in Digha. We are told one can also visit other beach areas such as Mandarmani and Mukutmanipur from Digha. But due to some reason we cancelled our visit to Mandarmani beach. But hopefully we are planning to visit next time for sure and very soon

Good to know about this beach.Very helpful information shared about this beach. Beautiful pictures.

Spend 48 Hours With This List Of 7 Things To Do In Mandarmani

Your weekend deserves a getaway to Mandarmani beach.

Image

Published On Jan 18, 2023 | Updated On Mar 08, 2024

Image

Drive to Mandarmani for the weekend getaway of your dreams. If Kolkata’s hubbub has resulted in a long, endless week, a short trip to the beach might just be the cure. Only 180 kilometres away from Kolkata, the small seaside resort town of Mandarmani poses as the perfect beach holiday. The fast-developing beach resort town is in the East Midnapore district of West Bengal, and it’s popular for its long stretches of sandy beaches.

Want to get more excited about why Mandarmani could be worth your while? For driving enthusiasts, Mandarmani’s sprawling beaches are perfect, as the Mandarmani beach is one of the longest motorable beaches in the country. But, this fast-developing resort town is a popular destination amongst those looking to relax, swim, and sunbathe. The waters here are generally clean and clear, and the beaches are surrounded by palm trees and other vegetation, making it a visually appealing place to visit.

Apart from the several things to do in Mandarmani, it is also home to several small hotels, guesthouses, and restaurants, which offer accommodation and local cuisine to visitors. There are also a number of local shops and markets in the town where visitors can purchase souvenirs and other items.

Give Mandarmani 48 hours, and you’ll have a relaxing weekend by the beach. Hop into the driver’s seat with this list of things to do in Mandarmani, and check out for yourself what this town has to offer.

Things to do in Mandarmani

1. drive on mandarmani beach.

Image

It’s the longest driveable beach in the country, so how could you not take your car through the sandy stretches? Extending up to 13 km, this is one of the best beaches in West Bengal , and it gives you great views as you drive by. But while you might expect it to be populated with tourists indulging in the same activity as you, you’ll be surprised to see how empty the beach here can be. Mandarmani Beach, despite its popularity, manages to stay less crowded, which is why driving on it is not only easy but adds to the thrill. That’s why driving on this endless beach is surely a thing to do in Mandarmani.

2. Indulge in water sports

Image

Like every other beach out there, one of the things to do in Mandarmani is to indulge in water sports. After all, what’s the point of a beach getaway, if you’re going to stay only on the shore? In the mornings, and till around 3:00 p.m., you can head to Mandarmani beach to ride a jet ski, go on a banana boat ride, and even ride an ATV on the beach. This is perfect for those who love a bit of activity on the beach instead of simply sunbathing away. Beach activities are a great addition to any holiday, especially if you’re out with the family and want to keep the kids entertained.

Image

3. Visit Tajpur Beach

Image

A lesser-known beach a few kilometres away from Mandarmani Beach, Tajpur Beach is secluded and pristine. The beach is worth visiting to view the dense vegetation of Tamarisk trees, which make the beach almost undiscoverable. During the day, you can also spot red crabs crawling across the beach. It is said that at times the beach resembles a red carpet! If you get to see crabs crawling on the beach in large numbers, lucky you! Regardless, you’re sure to spot a few of them crabbing away on a slow afternoon.

4. Visit Shankarpur Beach

Image

Beach hopping is one of the best things to do in Mandarmani and Shankarpur Beach is one place you should pay a visit to. The beach is also a regular fishing harbour, so you can watch fishermen bring the day’s catch if you’re taking a stroll early in the mornings. The white sand beach with crystal clear waters and mildly blowing wind offers a lot of photographic moments as well, and it’s an ideal place to visit in Mandarmani to relax. You could have a beach picnic here, just make sure you carry a few snacks and a cloth to sit on. It’s also a good idea to soak your feet in the water, as the seas here are cleaner.

5. Watch over Mandarmani Mohana

Image

Catch a sunset at Mandarmani Mohana, which is one of the popular things to do in Mandarmani. Mohana is essentially an estuary, where the river and the sea merge, but the little beach town has converted this into a point where tourists flock to watch the merge. It’s one of the places to visit in Mandarmani if you’re looking for some quiet time. Regardless, the views are beautiful and it’s fascinating to watch the natural flow of the river simply intermingle with the sea.

6. Dig into Bengali seafood

Image

One of the things to do in Mandarmani is to dig into fresh seafood. Naturally, this would be on any list, right? While you’re holidaying in the beach town, hop into the many restaurants and ask for the fresh catch of the day. Chances are you’ll get to sample a local fish variety. But we recommend you go big and try crabs, lobsters, clams, and large-sized squids too. There’s ample seafood you can chow down here, all cooked Bengali style. You’ll spot several home-style restaurants serving fuss-free food. But if you prefer comfort, resorts here have a restaurant or two attached, where you are guaranteed to get meals, you’ll love.

7. Go shopping in Mandarmani’s markets

Image

The resort town is increasingly trying to attract more tourists. So, you’ll spot a lot of souvenir stalls in Mandarmani’s local market. One of the things to do in Mandarmani is to buy statues, jewellery, and even small home décor knick-knacks all made using shells. Keeping up with the theme of being a beach resort town, you get umpteen items with materials from the beach. Expect idols, dolls, and even necklaces, bracelets, and earrings crafted out of shells and then painted in different colours and styles.

Image

Extend your beach holiday and visit Digha

Image

If you’re loving your beach holiday a little too much, why not go further along the road to explore more? Drive 30 km more and reach another beach town in West Bengal, Digha. This town is more popular amongst West Bengal locals and you’ll see several locals drive from Kolkata here for a weekend. Digha offers great beaches to stroll on, lots of beach activities and water sports, and even a watchtower to see Mohana (from the opposite side to Mandarmani).

How to reach Mandarmani

Located approximately 180 kms south of Kolkata, Mandarmani is in the Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal. The best way to reach Mandarmani includes:

By air: The nearest airport to Mandarmani is Kolkata International Airport, which is well-connected to major cities in India and abroad. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to reach Mandarmani.

By train: The nearest railway station to Mandarmani is Digha Railway Station, which is well-connected to major cities in India. From the railway station, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to reach Mandarmani.

By road: Mandarmani is well connected by road to major cities in West Bengal and the rest of India. You can take a bus from Kolkata or other nearby cities to reach Mandarmani. You can also hire a taxi or drive your own vehicle to Mandarmani.

Best time to visit Mandarmani

The best time to visit Mandarmani depends on whether you want a beach getaway in the summer or winter season. The monsoon season, which lasts from June to September, is best avoided as the area experiences heavy rainfall and rough sea conditions. Summer, which lasts from March to May, can mean that the coastal town of Mandarmani is hot and sultry. The humidity is high, making afternoons quite uncomfortable for sightseeing. The temperatures during this period range from 36 to 22 degrees celsius. The sun is usually scorching in West Bengal, making Mandarmani a destination you can only explore in the summer evenings once it’s cooler and easy to stroll along the beach. From December to February, the winter season brings with it the best weather to explore the beach town of Mandarmani. The temperature ranges from 15 to 35 degrees Celsius, making it comfortable to explore the area. It is also the peak tourist season, so there are more options for accommodation and activities. The skies become clear and bright blue, there’s a chill in the air, and the mild winds from the sea make Mandarmani a lovely place to sightsee and indulge in water sports.

The Serene Beach - Mandarmani - KolkataFusion

While mountains are my favourite holiday destination, sea instills life in me. Every time I come back from a sea beach, I seem to bubble with life for a few days.

Though there are quite a few sea beaches which are in a drive's distance from Kolkata and you can conveniently go for weekend trip, Mandarmani entices me the most. It's clean, it's calm, it's uncrowded, the waves break in harmony on touching the beach here and it has some remarkable resorts.

How to Reach Mandarmani

Located in East Midnapur, it is just 170km from Kolkata and can be reached by bus, car and train. The drive from Kolkata to Mandarmani can be either relaxing or a bit tricky depending on which route you take.

If you take the NH16 and NH116B, as per Google Maps, you will reach there in 3hrs 52 mins, but personally for us it was a bit bumpy journey as the NH116B is not as good as NH16. If you are a safe driver, from Kolaghat onwards you might feel the burn (a bit). Post taking the most desirable break at Sher-e-Punjab, Kolaghat, it took us 4 hours to reach our resort. Next time we are planning to take the NH16 route. Google Map says it is a 5hrs 6 mins journey, let's see how much time we take and since the road is good, we hope the journey is also going to be better!

Sher-e-Punjab-the All Time Favourite Food Joint At Kolaghat

Would like to mention here: A few years back, Sher-e-Punjab was the only good 'dhaba' at Kolaghat, but now there are many options; the one that we have tried out is the Express Food Plaza. It is spacious, clean and the food (specifically the North Indian) is pretty good.

Photo of The Serene Beach - Mandarmani - KolkataFusion 4/17 by KolkataFusion

There are many options available from Esplanade to Chaulkhola, from thereon you can get umpteen number of local transports for Mandarmani beach. You will get both AC and Non-AC buses. The first bus is from Snemita Paribahan at 5.30am, and there are options till approx. 12 in the night.

There are quite a few trains from Howrah to Digha or Ramnagar like Tamralipta Express, Paharia Express, Kandari Express, Duronto Express. You need to stop at Ramnagar or Digha and take a hired cab till Mandarmani.

What To Do at Mandarmani beach

Now, that's a very common question. What to do?

If you are a habitual dreamer like me with innate thirst of spending relaxed moments, you would agree that why to do something on a holiday also? As it is, we are in a rat's race and we don't get time to sit back and relax, so why not take the trip to Mandarmani to fill our life with some lazy moments?

Relax & Rejuvenate At Mandrmanoi

If you want to re-ignite your love with your beloved, go to Mandarmani, take a dip in the sea, enjoy a few beers or lemonade on the beach and spend some warm cozy moments with him. Set your minds free, enjoy the calm breeze and the sound of the sea. Hold each other's hand and let nature speak for you. Clear your differences and make a fresh start.

Fun At Mandarmani

If you want to know your kids better, go to Mandarmani, take a few bike rides and banana rides with them, bathe in the sea, sit back with cups of steaming hot tea or cool drinks of your choice and make up for all those times when your kid had wanted to say something to you and you had said, "not now please". While taking a walk along the long beach try to know each other better. You can also star gaze for a while with your kids lying on the moonlight kissed beach just after sunset.

If you want to go with your friends, then it is truly the place to party! As long as you see the sun, be soaked in water, relax on the hammocks, and cherish your friendship. As evening sets in, put on some sexy dresses (won't get much spectators though!) speak to your resort manager who can arrange the bonfire for you (it comes at a cost). Get your favourite drink with some yummy snacks and dance off to glory.

The Sana Beach Resort Rooms - Mandarmani

What do I say about this place? I am in love with it. Except the price, I loved everything about this place - the rooms, the staff, the food, the service, the view, the location, everything is simply perfect. Yah! All the rooms do not have an attached balcony, but if you go for the beach facing ones, you will not need a balcony. While the swimming pool area is very relaxing, the kids play area can be a bit more engaging. You have the freedom to dine wherever you want and sip your hot tea or cold beer at the place of your choice. After a dip in the sea, relaxing on their chairs, is a dream come true!

Both AC and Non-AC rooms are available, and most of them come with a balcony. So, you get a wonderful view from the room itself. There is a play area for the kids and sun decks for you to relax. Though a bit costly, the food is good. While you will get room service, the challenge is that they do not give any complimentary breakfast or mineral water bottles. In spite of having friendly staff, they are pretty slow in their service (it might be due to the rush), but they need to buck up to keep up with the competition.

Their lawn area and the kids play area is something to look out for. In the midst of serenity, if you want to dance to glory, then they have some best collection dance numbers. With the sun set, their music is bound to pull you to the swimming pool and bar area and you can enjoy there as long as you want. Rooms are spacious and good for family and couples. Another noteworthy aspect about ADB Kanvas is their service. From the moment you enter your room, you are assigned with a staff who's your one stop solution for all requirements.

There have been few complaints regarding their cleanliness, so just double check on that before you go. However, we haven't faced any such issue, and it's a place I would surely opt for a pocket friendly trip to Mandarmani.

P.S. We have not mentioned the prices as it depends on the season and from which you site you are booking. Personal recommendation is MMT, it offers some of the best discounts and awesome rooms!

Simply Awesome_Prawn Curry And Rice

All the hotels have restaurants and they serve more or less good food. So, you need not have to hunt for option. However, if you want some variety, you can also try out the 'jhoops' outside the hotels. Most of them have 'thali' options and they are reasonably priced. Regarding the hygiene factor, can't comment much but, have never faced any issues after eating at the 'jhoops'.

Lip-smacking Crab Dishes

Eat as much of sea food as you can! Sadly, it is not as widespread as Goa, but it is surely far better than Kolkata. The crabs curries are a must try and are available mostly all-round the year. I even find the prawns to be more delicious than the ones in Kolkata.

Habitual Tips

When in Mandarmani, try to get up early, bathe in the sea as long as you want, enjoy the sunset on the beach. Carry sunscreen gel, shades and caps. Enjoy the sea responsibly and you are bound to make a memorable trip.

Mandarmani Beach Kolkata Timings

Located in the East Midnapore district of West Bengal, India, at 180 kilometers from Kolkata city, the beach town of Mandarmani has an offbeat, small yet unique beach with quite a few luxury resorts and a potential to become the next go- to beach destination. The beach is situated on the Kolkata- Digha route.

Mandarmani beach is considered to be the longest motorable beach in India with a stretch of about 13 kilometers, where one can drive on the beach depending on the time when the tide conditions are appropriate. Some people have also compared this beach to Daytona beach due to the fact that it is one of the most tranquil beaches and one can drive right across the length of the beach.

The Mandarmani beach was initially called Mandarboni after it was discovered by few fishermen and at times, was also called Madar Mani. However, with time, people started referring to it as Mandarmani and thus the name.

Since the beach is comparatively secluded, it feels great to simply lie down and experience nature. The sunset views are most beautiful here. Mandarmani is a place where tourists and travelers can get to enjoy water sports and other adventure sports along with great food and local culture. It is a haven for travelers who love to explore unknown places that are away from the touristy crowd.

Few locals’ groups also offer to take sunset trips towards the Mandarmani Mohana (Estuary).

The beach is relatively quiet compared to the other beaches in West Bengal. If you decide to ride a car, the calm nature and the beauty of the surrounding area might catch you off guard. However, remember to stay alert while driving on the beach. Though Mandarmani Beach is secure enough, keeping your guards high is always wise.

2. Beach hopping

Mandarmani is such a location that it would be worth everything if you also visit the nearest beaches. Locations like Digha, Tajpur, Shankarpur, and Udaipur are in close proximity to Mandarmani. Nothing is stopping you from checking out these amazing beach destinations.

Just hop on a rental car, and you can easily access remote beaches. Since Digha is quite crowded, most people prefer to spend a day on these remote beaches.

3. Swimming

The sea in Mandarmoni doesn’t have a lot of waves. Those waves are so timid that you won’t have to struggle a lot to swim. If you are a swimming expert, then you can always go for a swim. However, make sure you are aware of high and low tides.

4. Water activities

5. Strolling

Regardless of where you stay in Mandarmani, the beach here is the real deal. There are plenty of activities to do on the beach, and one of them is just jaywalking.

Some people don’t want to go for a swim, boat ride or paraglide. Some want to soak the surroundings and enjoy quiet time. If you fall into this category, remember to take a walk along the beach.

Taking a walk on the beach is a perfect opportunity to watch the sunrise in the morning, sunset in the evening, and capture breathtaking photos of sailing boats.
