To give you a closer look,  we will share our personal experiences in this part of the Mastercraft Courser HSX Tour tire. We put two pairs of Courser HSX Tour on both front and rear of 95 GMC 1500XC 2wd. 

Courser HSX Tour came across us by chance. We decided to give Mastercraft a try among other American tire producers. We expected sharing the same vehicle production lines also make HSX Tour have an excellent driving performance.   

Until now, once it has already passed the half time of the treadwear warranty, we are still satisfied with the overall performance. The car rides smoothly on almost town roads and highways. It delivers superior tractions and consistent responsiveness under dry conditions or in light rain. 

I’m only aware that the rear tires got cupped with a roar once they had worn out. After rotating them, the sound was noticeable but acceptable. 

We just tried to drive on the backroad a few times. We had to accept it needed an improvement in traction and gripping.

Many reviews do not mention a distinct feature is an R-Tech Construction built into the tire’s sidewall. Yet, in our opinion, it is a decent feature to enhance response and corner stability at various speeds.

After exceeding expectations with my first set of Mastercraft tires on my sedan, I was thrilled to make a second purchase for comfortable and reliable tires on my SUV. Not only were the prices amazing due to great value quality ratio, but they also sported an attractive beefy look that left me more than satisfied!

After four years and 50,000 miles, these tires have shown that they are extraordinary. Not only do they offer a quiet and comfortable ride but also reliable traction on all types of terrain; from snow to wet pavement! My wife’s FWD Traverse has been able to maneuver in panic situations with no signs of deterioration due to their excellent adhesion.

After purchasing my Audi Q5, I was surprised to discover that the rear tires had a significantly lower tread-depth than the front. This caused an unpleasant roar from underneath me when driving – something which is common for those who don’t rotate their SUV’s wheels often. Although I’m pleased with how quiet and smooth it runs after replacing them, only time will tell if this effectively solved the issue or not!

How Good is Courser HSX on Road

The Courser HSX tire is a touring highway tire with the aim to provide you a comfortable ride on your SUV. At the same time, it gives a dependable performance on highway and street roads. It has a nice and balanced feel on the road and doesn’t wobble at high speed. It has good straight-line traction and grips the road well when cornering. Braking in dry is also good with stopping distance from 70 mph almost comparable to other competitor brands.

R-tech technology in sidewalls make the tires more responsive to driver’s input so there is weighty steering feel to it. This helps in making any emergency maneuvers and the driver can change lanes with more confidence.

When taken off-road, the Courser HSX can handle dirt and gravel roads without a problem, but you could be in trouble with rougher and more uneven roads like sand and mud. Don’t forget that the HSX is a highway tire.

HSX Wet Conditions Review

Given that the tires are designed for wet and dry conditions, they perform at an above average level for wet conditions. The Courser HSX has wide grooves for evacuating water. This gives it good traction in wet conditions and helps avoid hydroplaning. Starting and stopping HSX tire on a wet road is not a problem, it won’t slip or skid when driven at an average speed.

Courser HSX is not a performance tire and doesn’t have that feeling of ultimate wet grip. It’s possible to oversteer when taking a corner at a high speed on a wet road. You have to be careful when driving in heavy rain and avoid pushing the tire to its traction limit.

HSX Snow and Ice Review

Although HSX is rated as M+S, it doesn’t come with the  three – peak  mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol. The 3PMSF symbol indicates the tires can perform in severe snow and icy conditions. The tire tread and rubber aren’t designed to perform great on the ice and heavy snow. But you can drive these tires in winter and light snow conditions with some precaution. The 3D sipes built into the tire improve traction in very light snow, getting you where you need to be in light winter weather. They won’t slip and skid when stopped and started at slow speed but slippage could be an issue at high speed on snow.

In short, If you are caught out in winter with these tires, you can be confident that you’ll be just fine, but you should be sure to drive more carefully and reduce your speed. If you live somewhere that gets heavy winters then we’d have to recommend getting dedicated winter tires.

Comfort and Tire Noise Review

Mastercraft touring tires are generally comfortable on the highway and streets. They big sidewalls of HSX absorb the impacts from potholes and bumps. If the tires are balanced and the wheel alignment is done well they won’t vibrate or wobble at high speed on a highway. If you experience vibration issues with brand new HSX tires, get them checked for balance. Also, the problem could be caused by wheel bearing or the tire assembly so get those inspected as well.

Courser HSX is a bit noisy and you could hear the road noise coming into the car cabin. Although the noise level is not that bad and could be overcome by the car stereo. But you need to keep in mind that the HSX get noisier as it ages like any other tire. But if you keep the tires rotated regularly and get them balanced, they would wear evenly and won’t product unbearable sounds. Because if the tire wear is irregular it develops lumps and the hum of the tire gets louder.

Is HSX the right Tire for me?

I have these on a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I wouldn't recommend these tires if you live in the northeast they arent very good in the snow and slide around a lot in the rain... I will be replacing these as soon as my new Pirelli verdi all season plus show up... They do wear a long time

Replaced a set of factory installed toyo tires on my 2017 nissan pathfinder and couldn't be happier!! These tires are more aggressive but some how are quieter and smoother riding than the toyo's! I can't comment on winter traction because I run mastercraft MSR studded in the winter mouths.

I have only had these tires for about 8 months and cords are showing. I drive and average of 20 miles a day total for work. With the covid 19 I have not went to work for the past 4 months so thats less miles driven. I am being forced to purchase a new tire now. So I am not a very satisfied customer of this brand.
