Skylum was proudly founded in Ukraine, and our core development center is based in Kyiv. At this harrowing time, unfortunately we cannot guarantee the on-time delivery of updates to Luminar Neo. We strive for excellence in everything we do, and we will make sure to further develop and improve Neo and to keep you updated on any news. 

However, today we ask our community for help and support. Here are some details on what has happened and how you can support Ukraine in this difficult time.

!   At 5 am on February 24, Russia began the full-scale military invasion of Ukraine. They are violently trying to steal our country.

! Right now, there are missile strikes and bombardment of peaceful Ukrainian cities.   We must hide our families in bomb shelters and protect our land with weapons in our hands as part of the territorial defense forces.

! This disastrous and entirely unprovoked Russian war has already taken the lives of 198 civilians. 33 children have been injured, and 3 have been killed.

! The Armed Forces of Ukraine, young and brave heroes, are fighting all over the country not only for Ukraine but for Peace and Clear Skies in Europe. 

As we write to you from a city under attack, we want to be very clear: This war is not just something you see on TV. It is not happening in some distant lands. It is happening right now here in Ukraine, and the Russian forces who are invading our lands and threatening our families may come to your doorstep one day too if we do not stop them.

Sanctions that world governments are currently imposing are not enough. Russia must be completely isolated from all spheres of the civilized world: the financial system, technologies, sports, culture.  

Here is a list of simple actions you can take to help Ukraine. We MUST unite to quite literally save the world before it’s too late:

- Contact your local representatives and pressure them to provide more support for Ukraine and stricter sanctions on Russia. We need military and humanitarian aid and Russia must be cut off from SWIFT.

A creative, expertly written and well-designed travel brochure invites readers to cast themselves into a story that takes place in an exotic locale. In this article, learn how to make an enticing travel brochure that will have your audience fantasizing about-and booking-your travel packages.

Determining the Details of Your Travel Brochure

Step 1 Choose the destination of your potential clients.

  • A professional should already know what destination they are representing, or attempting to advertise for. Use this step to get to know the key features of your location: mountains, lakes, cabins, museums, parks, etc. Write each of these key features down on a piece of paper for use later on.
  • If you are a student, find an exciting place to advertise for. Some great examples are Mexico, Hawaii, Myrtle Beach South Carolina, the beaches of Florida, or Australia, to name just a few. Research the location you choose (using reputable sources such as online search engines, encyclopedias, library books, etc.) and find out key features about the location. Write each of these down on a piece of paper for use later on.
  • The lists for both students and professionals should be extra long at the beginning. It is better to create a long list to start, and then cross off items later on.

Step 2 Explore and locate the amenities of the location.

  • Travel around the website by yourself and write down what and where the particular amenity is.
  • If you are far away from where you are advertising for, look for maps online that might help you locate particular amenities. Sites like Google Maps often point out exactly what and where each of these is.
  • After you have created a detailed list of the amenities, put a star next to the items you think are most important (bathrooms generally are a top priority). Make sure to note whether these amenities provide additional accommodations, such as being handicap accessible. [1] X Research source

Step 3 Find out what the residents are saying, if your destination has residential accommodations.

  • Visit peoples' homes and ask them politely to give their opinion. Remember to bring a pencil and paper to write down exactly what they say. You can also bring a voice recorder if you do not write very fast.
  • If the destination is strictly for vacation (non-residential) try calling people whom have vacationed there in the past. As with the previous step, write down exactly what they have to say about their experience.
  • Students who do not have direct contact with persons whom live, or have vacationed there, should look online. Find internet sites that link you with local hotels, restaurants, etc. in the area of your destination. Step 4 Pick your target audience.

  • Vacation spots with lots of bathrooms, and restaurants available are great for an older demographic audience.
  • Destinations which are primarily vacation spots (non-residential) usually target a younger audience, or newlywed couples going on their honeymoon.
  • Vacation spots which have hotels furnished with WiFi and cable TV are great destinations for families.
  • Destinations which have large rooms are great for business workers, who are looking to conduct work from far away.
  • This is not an all encompassing list, but it will give you an idea about what to look for, and how to pick the right demographic audience. Something you might think is minor (a boardwalk for example) might make all the difference in the world for a particular clientele.

Step 5 Determine the price of your travel package.

  • Take into account the previous four steps, and in particular the target demographic group. Set a standard price to each of the amenities, and add them all up. Set a standard price for all of the key features of the destination and add them all up. Finally, add the price of the amenities and destination hot-spots together.
  • Adjust the vacation cost according to who the audience is. Younger clientele and families will most likely be looking for a cheaper vacation. Writing the Text of Your Travel Brochure

Step 1 Create a preliminary outline.

  • First, you’ll want to create a story. Just like a good novel pulls in a reader, the client wants to feel as if they are going on an adventure. In paragraph form (full sentences), write a convincing argument for why your vacation spot is the best place to visit.
  • After you have written down your argument, go back and proofread. More importantly, cross out extraneous information, keep what is critical, and add in to places that need a more exciting, or convincing argument.
  • This argument can then be split apart into different sections of your brochure. You might have to tailor the sentences to exist as a stand-alone argument in the different sections, but this will give you a good head start. It is important that the writer knows exactly why each of the individual pieces are critical, and how they come together to convince the clientele.

Step 2 Use specialized fonts and lettering.

  • Your heading/title should appear in bold lettering, underlined, and be large enough to read from far away. If someone is sitting in a doctors office, or at a coffee shop, they should be able to see the title clearly, at the top of the brochure.
  • Each of the subheadings/section headings should also be in bold, and underlined. They should be a slightly smaller font size than the title. They should all also all be the same font. If one subtitle is in Times New Roman, keep them all Times New Roman. This creates a nice flow to your brochure, and does not bog down the viewer in trying to comprehend the brochure.

Step 3 Write a captivating title.

  • Write down some adjectives you know that are not typically used, such as adventurous, pulsating, mind-boggling, fanciful, breathtaking, etc. Put these words first in your title, so that the readers eyes, reading left to right, will catch that key word.
  • Then, make sure to include the location in the title. If you advertising for a Hawaiian vacation, do not leave out the word Hawaii. Put the location right after the adjective.
  • Following the name of the place, you can finish the title with simply "vacation" or a synonym. End the title in an exclamation point, so that it appears that the person selling the vacation is just as excited as the potential clientele.
  • Bold the lettering, and underline the title. A good example is: Adventurous Mount Everest Vacation!

Step 4 Hook your audience with the opening sentence.

  • You want to make the argument for this vacation clear right up front. The reader is not going to look around the rest of the brochure if they are not convinced at the very beginning.
  • This would be a great time to simply list off a few of the accommodations/hot spots. For example: “An all-encompassing Hawaiian vacation that includes beautiful scenery, top-of-the-line hotels, and all the food you can eat!”.

Step 5 Write each of your sections.

  • You will want to include, at the bare minimum, the following sections: restaurants, hotels, scenery(appearance of the vacation spot), and shops. These are four of the most basic things people need to know about before they go on the vacation. In total, you should have around six to eight sections.
  • Make sure that what you are saying is necessary, succinct, and convincing. Consider what image you are using and make sure that the words match up. Feel free to highlight, italicize, or bold certain words or phrases.
  • This would also be a great time to add in those accommodations, such as handicap accessible, free continental breakfast, bike/walking trails, etc.

Step 6 Copy and edit testimonials.

  • To include block quotes in your brochure, start by indenting. Then add a quotation mark, and write in your quote. Finish by adding another quotation mark.
  • You will want to include only the most sensitive, valuable information. Do not include bad experiences, as this might turn off the clientele.
  • If you want to take out a sentence in the middle of a paragraph, simply highlight and delete. Then, in between the remaining sentences, add ... (three periods in a row). Step 7 Include a price section.

  • Include some simple terms in your 3-4 sentence price section such as: “Prices as low as $1000 for a family of four!” or, “Prices start at $1500, and include great discounts if you purchase by phone!”
  • Mention the different offers/deals vacationers can get through your particular company. Usually, there are family discounts, senior discounts, children discounts, etc.
  • This section should appear on the inside of the pamphlet, to the far right (at the end). You do not want to start the brochure by introducing price, nor do you want to put the price on the back of the brochure, as the clientele will probably look there first and never look inside.

Step 8 Link the viewer to other sources.

  • This should be done as a series of bulleted points or dashes. Do not write this information in paragraph form, as it will all run together.
  • Check a second and third time that the information is up to date and correct. Look at the bottom of webpages to see when the last time the page was updated. Creating the Visuals for Your Travel Brochure

Step 1 Choose eye-catching photos.

  • Some good examples include: A smiling visitor hugging a dolphin at a sea life attraction, or a woman relaxing with a massage in an open-air spa that overlooks the tropical sunset.
  • Make sure the photos are in color, and have a high-quality resolution. Do not use stock photos which generally look fake, and off-putting. Use real life images, or photos you have taken yourself at the location.
  • People enjoy seeing others having fun, so try to include photos of people enjoying themselves at your destination rather than showing an empty hotel room or deserted beach. This will invite readers to project themselves into the photo. [8] X Research source

Step 2 Consider the color scheme carefully.

  • To convey a relaxed feeling appropriate for a spa, use muted pastel tones. Children's destinations are best marketed with bright, bold colors. Historical site brochures can be given an "antique" feeling with sepia and earth tones.
  • For each panel of the brochure, use the same color. If there are different colors for each panel, it can become distracting and gaudy.

Step 3 Add in borders, asterisks, and designs.

  • Use a thin border to contain each of the panels in your brochure. A thick border can become distracting. The border should be a color that is a slightly darker/lighter shade of the tone that you use for the rest of the brochure.
  • If you want to highlight key points of your story, use bullet points or asterisks. Generally, 3-4 is the range you want to stay in. Try to highlight things that are not written about in the sentences.
  • Designs can also help, such as stars, rainbows, arrows, etc. Add these where and when you see fit. Once more, do not overuse these, and bog down the viewer in the visuals. The clientele should want to read more, not necessarily look more.

Step 4 Organize the brochure so the copy and visuals work together.

  • Tell the printing company that you want the brochures printed on high-quality paper. Cheap, flimsy paper can easily be torn, ripped, or water-damaged. Thick, coated paper provides resistance to accidents, and can be carried around mush easier.
  • If you wind up needing to use your home or business printer, just make sure to use thick, heavy paper. The settings of your printer should be set to the highest pixel quality so that your pictures come out clean and crisp.

Step 6 Provide a final copy proof.

Tour brochures are often a source of pleasure and easy to read–but it is frequently difficult to figure out what their enticing language really means. Each year, more and more brochures are remarkably precise. Many of them, however, still resort to such sleights of hand as describing a hotel as

”scenically located” and, therefore, presumably charming, when it also can mean the hotel is far from the center of town.

Brochures are tour operators` showcases, their prime selling tools, and some companies spend lavishly to produce them. For example, the 1985 American Express brochure for its European tours runs 160 pages and is strikingly illustrated with color photos and maps. Maupintour`s current European brochure is 144 pages long, Caravan`s is 108, and Globus-Gateway`s is 124.

That doesn`t mean that the smart traveler must absorb every word, but that at a minimum you should study thoroughly the descriptions of any trip you may think of taking, plus the overall tour conditions, which are usually found in the back of the brochure.

Most major tour operators sell through travel agents, not directly to the public. If a brochure is unclear on any point that seems important, ask your agent for answers; leave nothing to doubt. The Europe brochure of Trafalgar Tours, for example, does not explain the difference between the ”table d`hote three-course dinners” that are usually included in Britain and the ”three-course dinners” (not specified as table d`hote) that are offered on the Continent.

A phone call to Nigel Osborne, vice president for sales and marketing at Trafalgar`s office in New York, elicited the explanation that table d`hote, as interpreted by his company, means a choice of three or four main courses, while continental dinner menus usually offer one entree, with no choice.

Regardless of how attractive a brochure may seem, two cardinal points should be kept in mind. One is that the higher the price, the more features a tour is likely to embrace and the better the quality is likely to be. That doesn`t necessarily mean that expensive is good and cheap is poor, but it is grossly unrealistic to expect regal treatment at bargain prices.

For example, the Hemphill-Harris Travel Corp. of Encino, Calif., devotes pages 4 and 5 of its Europe brochure to food. All meals are included on every tour, it says, and whenever possible you can choose anything from the menu, except caviar, at no extra cost.

”In major cities,” the brochure says, ”you may eat not only at any of the restaurants in your hotels but also anywhere in the city; when you return to the hotel, simply present the receipt to your tour manager who will immediately reimburse you.”

In contrast, what Trafalgar calls its ”cost saver” tours of Europe include dinner on many but not all evenings and from restricted menus, usually at the hotel where you spend the night. The brochure says lunches are not included ”since in our experience clients prefer to sample local regional dishes and delicacies during the lunch break.” What this also means, of course, is that lunches are at extra cost.

Hemphill-Harris uses luxury hotels, some of international renown, such as the Savoy in London, the Bristol in Vienna and the D`Angleterre in Copenhagen. Trafalgar uses what it calls ”good tourist-class hotels.” However, a 21-day Italian tour of Hemphill-Harris costs $5,280 a person, double occupancy, while a 21-day Trafalgar tour of Europe is priced as low as $770. Both prices are per person in double occupancy and do not include round-trip transportation between the United States and Europe.

The second cardinal point is that unless a brochure specifies that something is included in the tour price, you can usually assume that it is not.

In Europe, for example, dinnertime coffee or tea is rarely included unless the brochure says it is. So if you are accustomed to having one or the other with your meal, be prepared to be billed extra. On page 3 of its Europe brochure, Maupintour states in highlighted type that ”coffee or tea and dessert are always included.” In small type on page 252 of its Europe brochure, American Express lists coffee among items that are ”not included.” Brochure language must sometimes be taken literally. For example, Trafalgar`s description of Day 10 of its scenic Europe tour is headlined

”Venice at leisure.” Then it states: ”Ancient and splendid palaces, once the homes of Venetian noblemen, featured on our canal cruise. Disembark at St. Mark`s to view the Cathedral with its murals and bronze horses; the Doges`

Palace and Bell Tower. Shop for famous Murano glass, fine Venetian lacework or fashionable clothing. Return to St. Mark`s to enjoy the nightlife–perhaps by gondola.”

Key phrases here are ”our canal cruise” and ”perhaps by gondola.”

”Our” means that the canal cruise is included in the tour price.

”Perhaps” means that you can take an evening gondola ride if you wish, but it is not included. Osborne said, however, that Trafalgar tour directors would offer one at extra cost, just as, according to the brochure, ”they`ll tell you the best places to shop.”

Some key questions to keep in mind when studying a tour brochure:

— What type hotels are used and where are they relative to sightseeing, shopping, transportation and entertainment?

If the brochure doesn`t provide satisfactory answers, ask your travel agent. Be aware that the standards by which hotels are rated vary from country to country, and that what may be called first class in Europe may seem third class to many Americans.

Where governments officially grade hotels, ratings are usually based on what physical facilities they offer, such as private baths, room telephones and air conditioning, rather than on quality.

Some brochures use descriptions in the Official Hotel and Resort Guide, a multivolume worldwide directory published by Murdoch Magazines in New York. But some of these can be ambiguous. Wilma Goldenberg, the editor of the guide, defined ”superior tourist class” as ”a little better than straight tourist class,” which she called ”utilitarian,” and ”moderate first class” as

”not fully first class.”

— What meals are included, and will menus offer choices?

The best brochure itineraries will specify what meals are included each day. Most tours include some sort of breakfast daily, but it may be continental, which usually means only rolls and coffee. Some skip lunches and many omit dinners in such major cities as London, Paris and Rome. Brochures typically contend that there are so many good restaurants in those cities that you should have a choice; remember, however, that what you pay for such meals will increase the cost of your tour.

— What is the pace of the tour?

How many nights will you spend at each hotel, or will there be a string of one-night stays, meaning daily packing and unpacking? Will there be enough free time to suit your taste, and will it be genuinely free, or simply an opportunity for the tour manager to try to sell you optional sightseeing or entertainment at extra cost or to nudge you toward favored shops?

Will enough evening entertainment be offered, as part of the tour or optional, to keep you from feeling lonely if you are traveling by yourself? If you are going to Europe, will you have time to relax after your overnight transatlantic flight, and will you have access to your hotel room as soon as you arrive? All of these are appropriate questions when trying to match your tastes with the tour operator`s description.

Finally, it is important to determine the tour operator`s cancellation and refund policies as well as whether the advertised prices are guaranteed.

Winter festivals have become an important part of Tasmania's colder months, drawing thousands of tourists to the state during what had traditionally been its quietest period.

But some of Tasmania's most popular festivals have fallen victim to factors affecting festivals around the country.

Dark Mofo, one of the state's biggest winter drawcards, is taking a year off after more than a decade, citing rising costs and the need for a "period of renewal".

Its Winter Feast, Nude Solstice Swim and a late-night dance party will still go ahead, however.

Dark Mofo last year attracted 45,000 interstate visitors, sold more than 100,000 tickets and brought in more than $5.5 million at the box office, and has been described by the Tasmanian Hospitality Association as a "game changer" for winter tourism.

Accommodation owner Annie McKay said Dark Mofo had a positive impact on her business at Strahan, on Tasmania's west coast, in previous years.

"The event has become so iconic that people are using it as a motivator to travel to Tasmania, and then planning external travel from that event," Ms McKay said.

She said if Dark Mofo were cancelled indefinitely, "it would have a huge impact".

Tourism Tasmania optimistic about winter season

Despite the loss of the full Dark Mofo festival program this year, Tourism Tasmania is hopeful it will be able to attract visitors to the state this winter.

The tourism body has released the fourth iteration of its Off-Season marketing campaign, which encourages Australians to become "a winter person" by immersing themselves in some of the more than 500 "off-season" experiences across the state.

"It's a challenging time for travel, and so that's why we're really investing in this winter campaign this year," Tourism Tasmania chief executive Sarah Clark said.

Ms Clark said while Dark Mofo has hit pause on the full festival, its Winter Feast would still draw international and interstate visitors.

"It's a challenging time for events to operate in this environment.

"There's rising costs, but there's also a change in what people are looking for, so it's good to see some events taking a pause … so that next year we can be bigger and better," she said.

According to Tourism Tasmania figures, 1.26 million tourists visit the state each year. Of those, 500,000 visit during winter — a number the tourism body hopes will be repeated this year despite Dark Mofo's cancellation.

Huon Valley winter festival also on the way out

The organisers of Willie Smith's Midwinter Festival have announced this year's festival will be the last.

Organisers said the festival, in its 11th year, had been running at a loss for the past nine years.

Willie Smith's director, Andrew Smith, said a lack of volunteers, weather risk and economic impacts all contributed to the decision to cancel the festival.

"If you look at festivals all around Tasmania, and, in fact, all around the country, when the pressure is coming on for them to have positive revenue, they're slowly making the decision that the risk to do that is simply too high," Mr Smith said.

Cost-of-living pressures, climate instability and dwindling ticket sales are behind the cancellations of other festivals interstate.

Splendour in the Grass was canned just a fortnight after its line-up was announced, and Groovin' the Moo has also been cancelled.

Tasmanian summer festival MONA FOMA has also been cancelled, with Mona founder David Walsh saying its "spell has worn off".

The New England Patriots made the decision to move on from Bill Belichick shortly after the 2023 regular season came to an end. Since then, the coaching legend hasn't been quiet about making the rounds for other franchises and college programs.

This past week, the eight-time Super Bowl champion coach for the Patriots and New York Giants made his latest trip to Washington for a two-pronged reason. First, Belichick was the key note speaker at a coaches clinic for the Huskies as they began Spring Workouts this week. The plan was for Belichick to join his former assistant Jedd Fisch where he would watch practice and then speak to players.

There's another reason why Belichick would possibly chose to come to Washington in the first place - his son Steve.

The oldest son of Belichick's children, Steve took a position with the Huskies as the defensive coordinator for the Nation runner-ups last season.

"It's cool. I'm glad he got to come out here," Belichick said. "I look up to him in so many different areas but to have him out here to lean on is awesome."

It has been a tumultuous offseason for the Belichick family as a whole. The youngest brother Brian has chosen to remain with the Patriots organization as they turn to Jerod Mayo to lead the franchise in the future. Bill, on the other hand, has had to deal with the fall-out from Apple's "The Dynasty" in which his coaching and overall legacy were called into question by Patriots owner Robert Kraft and several former players.

If he was worried about it, though, the 71-year-old isn't showing it. At the very least, he continues to be active around the football landscape.

What is sustainable tourism in panama, it depends who you ask.

If you ask Rich Cahill to define sustainable tourism, he'll tell you about the wilderness next to the Panama Canal where you can find ocelots, howler monkeys, and three-toed sloths. It's about explaining to visitors that nature is both fragile and resilient — a contradiction that's on full display in these lush Central American rainforests.

"People think they know sustainability," says Cahill, who runs Ancon Expeditions , a Panamanian tour operator. "But they're not thinking big enough."

Sustainable means something different to David Kianni, general manager of the Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo . To him, it's about being a responsible corporate citizen — no single-use plastics, and having an active conservation initiative — and creating a mentorship program that supports native culture.

Just down a cobblestone street in Old Town Panama City, you'll find yet another definition of sustainability at the just-opened Amarla Casco Viejo , a boutique hotel. For general manager MarĂ­a Antonieta RamĂ­rez, it's about following all the best practices of conservation and promoting artists like Phoebe Montague Warr, whose riveting images of Panama's biodiversity are on display in the guest rooms.

Sustainability in tourism is a broad topic that covers environmental protection, supporting local communities and cultural preservation. But what does sustainability really mean?

I'll be asking that question as I travel through the Caribbean, a part of the world that has aggressively pursued a reputation for sustainability in tourism. But how sustainable is the Caribbean when compared to other places? How can you tell if a destination is really sustainable? And ultimately, is sustainability worth it, not just to the visitor and the business, but also to the affected communities?

For a benchmark, I decided to start in Panama, perhaps one of the sustainability pioneers. Guides like Cahill were leading tourists through tropical rainforests decades ago, before ecotourism became a household word. Panama also has a colorful history as an adventure destination, featuring dictators, military invasions and plenty of intrigue. Plus, it's an airline hub that connects to many Caribbean islands, as well as other destinations in the Americas and Europe.

What is sustainable tourism?

Experts will tell you that, on its broadest level, sustainable tourism is about reducing the negative environmental, social, and economic consequences of travel. But it's also about helping local communities and preserving natural and cultural resources for people who live in the affected areas.

Sustainability means that you can keep coming back to the place again and again without worrying about it being depleted or destroyed. And here are three main ways a destination can pursue a sustainability goal:

Reducing environmental damage

Sustainable tourism tries to lower carbon emissions, reduce waste and conserve resources. Hotel recycling programs and carbon neutrality commitments by airlines fall under this category.

Helping local communities

Sustainability is also about empowering local communities through small business mentorship programs and sourcing local products. When your boutique hotel offers a locally made drink or soap product, chances are it's part of a sustainability effort.

Preserving culture

The final aspect of sustainable tourism is about helping people maintain local cultures and traditions. This may include promoting a range of tourist-related activities that allows visitors to appreciate the ways of the indigenous society.

These three core sustainability principles sound simple enough. But when it comes down to it, the definition is like sand in your fingers. It's elusive. It sounds promotional, and at times gimmicky. And ultimately, isn't sustainability something airlines, hotels and tour operators should have been doing all along?

In the Panama Canal, a practical definition of sustainability

The Panama Canal is an unlikely ecotourism destination. Dredging a canal between the Atlantic and Pacific disrupted fragile ecosystems and led to the extinction of several species, notably the golden frog. But the security concerns also preserved fragile rainforest, and after gaining ownership of the canal from the U.S., Panama created Soberania National Park to protect the area surrounding the canal.

Today, the national park is home to some of the most spectacular birdwatching in Central America. You can see everything from crested guans and toucan to heron and antbirds hawks in the forests. These animals have adapted to the canal. It isn't uncommon to see a monkey or jaguar swimming across the canal during a boat tour.

Cahill, an American who grew up in Panama, remembers when the U.S. still administered the canal and the entire area was closed off to most people. Ironically, he says the military bases and travel restrictions saved the area from development and made it one of the leading ecotourism attractions in Latin America.

And then the visitors came.

"Growth is a tough thing without good planning," he says. "It's easy to forget that."

But growth is very much on everyone's mind in Panama. That's because the country has seen an influx in visitors as more cruise ships have come through the Panama Canal. A new cruise terminal has opened just outside Panama City, straining the city's limited tourism infrastructure.

"When you get all these cruise ships coming in, you can see the consequences of poor planning," adds Cahill.

So that's one perspective. Panama wasn't meant to be an ecotourism destination, but it became one despite the serious consequences of a canal being dug through it — maybe even because of it. And now it is struggling with its own success. More people want to see Panama, to transit through the canal, to go birdwatching and to experience the rainforests that maybe would have been decimated if it hadn't been for the canal.

The canal should have destroyed the environment, but the rainforests are resilient and the enormous public works project ended up protecting the environment, in a way. It's a curious contradiction.

Can an airline be sustainable?

Back in Casco Viejo, Panama's old town, there are more people wrestling with the same questions: What, exactly, does it mean to be sustainable?

For example, what if you're an airline? Air carriers are constantly getting themselves into trouble for claiming to be green. In the last six months, several governments have handed out fines to airlines who made bold but ultimately false claims about their carbon offset programs. The smart airlines are keeping a low profile — and making a difference where they can.

Katherine Katsudas, a senior manager at Copa Airlines , is pondering sustainability over lunch at Kaandela, the Amarla Casco Viejo's restaurant. For the Panamanian carrier, sustainability is about giving back to the community by subsidizing its low-key Aeronautical Technicians Academy. The airline quietly opened the training facility in Tocumen, just outside Panama City, a few years ago. It offers young men and women from disadvantaged backgrounds full scholarships to train as aircraft mechanics.

"And they have a guaranteed job waiting for them when they graduate," she says.

The program has benefited everyone by graduating 132 maintenance technicians, she adds. It removed one of the major obstacles to higher learning for the young people enrolled in the program, which is that they can't afford tuition and end up missing classes because of financial or family obligations. The 86 students currently enrolled in the program receive a stipend for living expenses.

It also gives people from an underprivileged community, many of whom live just a stone's throw from the airport, a chance to have a stake in one of Panama's most successful businesses.

Few travelers stop to consider the aircraft mechanic who maintains their plane, or the low-income neighborhood next to the airport when they land in Panama City. But it is all part of an economic ecosystem that must also be sustainable in order for all this to work, according to Katsudas.

Being a good corporate citizen is something Copa was doing long before sustainability was a buzzword. But now that someone has given it a name, the airline has fully embraced it.

A boutique hotel that supports sustainability

Upstairs in the Amarla's guest rooms, you can see sustainability efforts on display. Each room in this meticulously restored 120-year-old boutique property is completely unique, and that extends to the framed photos on the walls, many of which are for sale. The images depict indigenous people in the Panamanian rainforests. The photos are colorful and visually arresting.

Ramírez, the hotel's general manager, explains that the photographer’s works are intended to support the heritage of different indigenous communities.

"The portrait capture the essence and diversity of its people — breathtaking landscapes, nature, fauna and the enduring spirit of its indigenous communities," she explains.

She says 30% of profits go back to indigenous individuals in the picture, the community where the image was shot, or to their chosen charity.

This type of sustainability is becoming more common in Latin American luxury hotels, where guests are looking for more than a written commitment to sustainability. They want something tangible, and maybe even something they can take home with them to remind them of their adventure.

Building sustainability through coconut oil

The Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo has a fascinating backstory. The building was a military club that was almost completely leveled by U.S. forces during the 1989 Panama invasion. According to several people I spoke with, the Americans believed Manuel Noriega was hiding there. He wasn't.

Just before the pandemic, the hotel was rebuilt as a luxury urban resort. Today, visitors can relax at its elegant Mayda bar overlooking the canal and watch the cruise ships float by.

The Sofitel's sustainability program feels like a combination of the approaches taken by Copa and Amarla. It's a mentorship initiative that develops young indigenous entrepreneurs in collaboration with the Forest Stewardship Council Indigenous Foundation , an organization that supports indigenous people worldwide. The Sofitel marketing team is working with the Guna Ogob community to create a sustainable business selling coconut oil.

"We've been guiding the young talent step by step as to how to go from setting up the business to marketing and selling the coconut oil, as well as managing its finances and cash flow," explains Kianni, the hotel's general manager. "Our mentorship Initiative has been developed to help the indigenous community to further develop their business model and gain revenues to be used by the community."

Kianni says Guna Ogob Coconut Oil is about to become an official business, through its mentorship program will be supported by the hotel. But he's gone a step further, and is in contact with Sofitel corporate to use this model for other hotels within the brand, which will support other indigenous communities.

Why bother being sustainable?

I asked Kianni why he was spending valuable resources on developing a coconut oil business at a time when the Panamanian lodging industry is still struggling to recover from the aftereffects of the pandemic. He said people expect more than green certifications and recycling programs.

"They want to make a real difference," he told me.

That may be the biggest takeaway from the Panamanian sustainability experience. Whether you're guiding travelers through the locks of the Panama Canal, training underprivileged people to become aircraft mechanics, or selling photos of indigenous people or marketing coconut oil, people are tired of the talk. They want action — not words.

Simply saying that you are sustainable is no longer enough in the travel industry. You have to think big.

It almost time! Millions of Americans across the country Monday are preparing to witness the once-in-a-lifetime total solar eclipse as it passes over portions of Mexico, the United States and Canada.

It's a sight to behold and people have now long been eagerly awaiting what will be their only chance until 2044 to witness totality, whereby the moon will completely block the sun's disc, ushering in uncharacteristic darkness.

That being said, many are curious on what makes the solar eclipse special and how is it different from a lunar eclipse.

What is an eclipse?

An eclipse occurs when any celestial object like a moon or a planet passes between two other bodies, obscuring the view of objects like the sun, according to NASA .

What is a solar eclipse?

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon comes in between the Earth and the sun, blocking its light from reaching our planet, leading to a period of darkness lasting several minutes. The resulting "totality," whereby observers can see the outermost layer of the sun's atmosphere, known as the corona, presents a spectacular sight for viewers and confuses animals – causing nocturnal creatures to stir and bird and insects to fall silent.

Partial eclipses, when some part of the sun remains visible, are the most common, making total eclipses a rare sight.

What is a lunar eclipse?

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon and the sun are on exact opposite sides of Earth. When this happens, Earth blocks the sunlight that normally reaches the moon. Instead of that sunlight hitting the moon’s surface, Earth's shadow falls on it.

Lunar eclipses are often also referred to the "blood moon" because when the Earth's shadow covers the moon, it often produces a red color. The coloration happens because a bit of reddish sunlight still reaches the moon's surface, even though it's in Earth's shadow.

Difference between lunar eclipse and solar eclipse

The major difference between the two eclipses is in the positioning of the sun, the moon and the Earth and the longevity of the phenomenon, according to NASA.

A lunar eclipse can last for a few hours, while a solar eclipse lasts only a few minutes. Solar eclipses also rarely occur, while lunar eclipses are comparatively more frequent. While at least two partial lunar eclipses happen every year, total lunar eclipses are still rare, says NASA.

Another major difference between the two is that for lunar eclipses, no special glasses or gizmos are needed to view the spectacle and one can directly stare at the moon. However, for solar eclipses, it is pertinent to wear proper viewing glasses and take the necessary safety precautions because the powerful rays of the sun can burn and damage your retinas.

What time the 2024 solar eclipse started, reached peak totality and ended

The 2024 solar eclipse will be visible across North America today. As the moon's position between the Earth and sun casts a shadow on North America, that shadow, or umbra, will travel along the surface from west to east at more than 1,500 miles per hour along the path of totality . 

That means the eclipse will start, peak and end at different times — as will the moments of total darkness along the path of totality — and the best time to view the eclipse depends on where you are located. Some places along the path will have more totality time than others.

In Texas, the south-central region had clouds in the forecast , but it was better to the northeast, according to the National Weather Service. The best eclipse viewing weather was expected in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, as well as in Canada's New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

What time does the 2024 total solar eclipse start?

The total solar eclipse will emerge over the South Pacific Ocean before the shadow falls across North America, beginning in parts of Mexico. The path of totality , where onlookers can witness the moon fully blocking the sun (through eclipse viewing glasses for safety ), is expected to first make landfall near the city of Mazatlán around 9:51 a.m. MT. 

The total solar eclipse will cross over the U.S.-Mexico border into Texas, where it will emerge over Eagle Pass at 12:10 p.m. CT and then peak at about 1:27 p.m. CT.

In Dallas, NASA data shows the partial eclipse will first become visible at 12:23 p.m. CT and peak at 1:40 p.m. CT. The next states in the path of totality are Oklahoma and Arkansas, where the eclipse begins in Little Rock at 12:33 p.m. CT. 

Cleveland will see the beginning of the eclipse at 1:59 p.m. ET. Darkness will start spreading over the sky in Buffalo, New York, at 2:04 p.m. ET. Then, the eclipse will reach northwestern Vermont, including Burlington, at 2:14 p.m. ET. Parts of New Hampshire and Maine will also follow in the path of totality before the eclipse first reaches the Canadian mainland  at 3:13 p.m. ET.

Although the experience won't be exactly the same, viewers in all the contiguous U.S. states outside the path of totality will still be able to see a partial eclipse. Some places will see most of the sun blocked by the moon, including Washington, D.C., where the partial eclipse will start at 2:04 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:20 p.m. ET.

In Chicago, viewers can start viewing the partial eclipse at 12:51 p.m. CT, with the peak arriving at 2:07 p.m. CT.  In Detroit, viewers will be able to enjoy a near-total eclipse beginning at 1:58 p.m. ET and peaking at 3:14 p.m. ET.

New York City will also see a substantial partial eclipse, beginning at 2:10 p.m. ET and peaking around 3:25 p.m. ET.

In Boston it will begin at 2:16 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse reach peak totality?

Millions more people will have the chance to witness the total solar eclipse this year than during the last total solar eclipse , which was visible from the U.S. in 2017. 

The eclipse's peak will mean something different for cities within the path of totality and for those outside. Within the path of totality, darkness will fall for a few minutes. The longest will last more than 4 minutes, but most places will see between 3.5 and 4 minutes of totality. In cities experiencing a partial eclipse, a percentage of the sun will be obscured for more than two hours.

Mazatlán is set to experience totality at 11:07 am PT. Dallas will be able to see the moon fully cover the sun at 1:40 p.m. CT. Little Rock will start to see the full eclipse at 1:51 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 3:13 p.m. ET and Buffalo at 3:18 p.m. ET. Totality will reach Burlington at 3:26 p.m. ET before moving into the remaining states and reaching Canada around 4:25 p.m.

Outside the path of totality, 87.4% of the sun will be eclipsed in Washington, D.C. at 3:20 p.m. ET, and Chicago will have maximum coverage of 93.9% at 2:07 p.m. CT. New York City is much closer to the path of totality this year than it was in 2017; it will see 89.6% coverage at 3:25 p.m. EDT. 

Detroit is another city that will encounter a near-total eclipse, with 99.2% maximum coverage at 3:14 p.m. ET. Boston will see 92.4% coverage at 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse end?

The eclipse will leave continental North America from Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NT, according to NASA.

At the beginning of the path of totality in Mazatlán, the eclipse will be over by 12:32 p.m. PT, and it will leave Dallas at 3:02 p.m. CT. The eclipse will end in Little Rock at 3:11 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 4:29 p.m. CDT and Buffalo at 4:32 p.m. ET. Burlington won't be far behind, with the eclipse concluding at 4:37 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, the viewing will end in Chicago at 3:21 p.m. CT, Washington, D.C. at 4:32 p.m. ET, and New York City at 4:36 p.m. ET. 

In Detroit, the partial eclipse will disappear at 4:27 p.m. ET, and in Boston, it will be over at 4:39 p.m. ET.

How long will the eclipse last in total?

The total solar eclipse will begin in Mexico at 11:07 a.m. PT and leave continental North America at 5:16 p.m. NT. From the time the partial eclipse first appears on Earth to its final glimpses before disappearing thousands of miles away, the celestial show will dazzle viewers for about 5 hours, according to timeanddate.com . 

The length of the total solar eclipse at points along the path depends on the viewing location. The longest will be 4 minutes and 28 seconds, northwest of Torreón, Mexico. Near the center of the path, totality takes place for the longest periods of time, according to NASA.

Spectators will observe totality for much longer today than during the 2017 eclipse , when the longest stretch of totality was 2 minutes and 32 seconds.

The moon's shadow seen on Earth today, called the umbra, travels at more than 1,500 miles per hour, according to NASA. It would move even more quickly if the Earth rotated in the opposite direction.

What is the longest a solar eclipse has ever lasted?

The longest known totality was 7 minutes and 28 seconds in 743 B.C. However, NASA says this record will be broken in 2186 with a 7 minute, 29 second total solar eclipse. The next total solar eclipse visible from parts of the U.S. won't happen until Aug. 23, 2044.
