Review: At the Hella Mega Tour it was all about the cult of Green Day

Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Weezer packed Petco Park’s East Village stadium, and the three rock acts doted on their loyal followings

“Do the kids still like rock music?” Fall Out Boy’s bassist Pete Wentz asked the Petco Park crowd, halfway through its set at the Hella Mega Tour. Judging from the screams that echoed throughout downtown San Diego, it’s safe to say the kids — and the genre — are alright.

Hordes of fans swarmed East Village on Sunday night to see three big names: Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Weezer (The Interrupters, a ska-punk band from Los Angeles, opened the event). Though the stacked lineup straddles the pop-punk genre, the rock ‘n’ roll vibe permeated the stadium. And ticketholders dressed the part, clad in a standard uniform of ripped jeans and band tees.

The crowd during the Hella Mega Tour at Petco Park in downtown San Diego on August 29, 2021.

Though elder millennials and young Gen Xers dominated the crowd, the all-ages show didn’t discriminate. Nearly every generation was represented in the stands, from young kids out late on a school night to Boomers with “Cool Mom” tank tops. Though similarly dressed, the fanbase spanned all walks of life — filled with self-identified outsiders and misfits who leaned on the music of all three bands to get through hard times.

Mere hours before the show, a light sprinkle threatened to re- re- schedule Hella Mega Tour’s San Diego date, originally slated for July 24. Luckily, the weather pulled through to deliver clear skies and dry chairs by the 5:30 p.m. start time. But that famous San Diego climate came at a price, with a bright ball of sunlight blinding the crowd — and possibly questioning their outfit choices — as the sea of Vans, Converse and Dr. Martens-wearers searched for their seats.

Perhaps the daytime element served as the biggest disadvantage for Weezer, who took to the stage a full hour before the sun set. To the rock band’s credit, the seats were far more packed than a typical “opener” would draw. (Admittedly, the triple Grammy-award winning band would likely scoff at being referred to as anyone’s opening act.)

Singer Rivers Cuomo and drummer Patrick Wilson of Weezer

Be it the daytime backdrop or a concerted effort to save energy, the audience reacted casually to Weezer’s performance; aside from those donning “Weezer” t-shirts, listeners mostly stayed seated, approvingly nodding or swaying in their seats. Hits like “Buddy Holly” and “Pork and Beans” picked up steam, and try-hardfront man Rivers Cuomo’s audience pandering — such as changing a lyric in “Beverly Hills” to “livin’ in San Diego” — were received well.

Weezer’s ego may have taken a bit of a blow when the audience participation soared to a song that wasn’t even its own, but its radio-friendly cover of “Africa” by Toto. The crowd also went wild to a single line in “El Scorcho.”After Cuomo belted the lyrics, “I asked you to go to the Green Day concert,” the band took a dramatic pause, followed by the Jumbotron zooming in on a fan’s Green Day shirt before panning to the rest of the now-standing crowd.

The sun finally dipped under the stands just as Weezer wrapped the last song of its one-hour set. A half hour later, Fall Out Boy was greeted by the excitement of nightfall paired with flames blasting from the stage. Dressed casually — aside from the shirtless, tattoo-clad drummer Andy Hurley, the band donned black t-shirts and hoodies — the four-piece proved looks can be deceiving, delivering a solid performance that was far from sloppy.

As expected, fangirls swooned for Wentz, who received more name chants and crowd asides than lead singer Patrick Stump. But if the other band members took offense, they didn’t let it show. The crowd returned the energy Fall Out Boy delivered; dedicated fans stayed standing throughout the set, while those sitting sang along to the set list that spanned more than a decade, rarely missing a beat.

Singer Patrick Stump and Bassist Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy

Post Fall Out Boy, the surprisingly-patient audience was rewarded with a two-song crowd energizer. Speakers started blaring Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and the Jumbotron plastered faces of screaming, singing and smiling faces. Then came the most bizarre appearance of the night — an unknown person dressed in a bunny costume, who chugged a beer before leading the crowd in “Blitzkrieg Bop” by the Ramones.

A pink bunny on stage before Green Day plays

Any speculation about which act the sold-out crowd was there to see washed away once Green Day stepped onto the stage. In unison, the entire audience rose to its feet and stayed standing for the nearly two-hour set.

Yet it didn’t seem like the crowd’s energy was enough for 49-year-old frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, who performed like he was still in his 20s. Acting almost as a cult leader, he made constant demands on the crowd, which obeyed without question. Per his orders, the crowd agreed to “go crazy,” from jumping to “Know Your Enemy” to putting their “f—ing hands up in the air” during “American Idiot.” Armstrong even convinced everyone to shine their phone lights during “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” — illuminating Petco Park enough to turn off all the stadium lights.

Singer Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day in concert

Despite his demands, Armstrong’s orders carried no animosity. The band’s intense feelings of appreciation permeated the performance, giving the audience star treatment and delivering 110 percent for every song in the iron-clad set. From the sweat dripping off the band members’ hands during “Wake Me Up When September Ends” to Armstrong shining a physical spotlight on the crowd during “Holiday,” it was clear that for Green Day, the fans come first. (One fan was even invited on stage to perform a guitar solo for “Knowledge,” a song by Operation Ivy, and was then allowed to keep the guitar.)

“It’s been a long year but we’re still alive,” Armstrong told the audience, his voice bleeding with sincerity, before easing into the band’s 2016 hit “Still Breathing.”

A large burst of confetti, fireworks display and a fittingly titled encore, “Time Of Your Life” closed the six-hour evening. After the COVID-19 shutdown starved these rock fans of live music for over a year, Green Day, Weezer and Fall Out Boy delivered on their promise for a Hella Mega, time of their lives.

Los Angeles ska punks The Interrupters opened the Texas show with an 8-song setlist. They performed a cover of Billie Eilish's "Bad Guy," as well as their popular singles "A Friend Like Me," "Take the Power Back" and their last song of the set "She's Kerosene."

Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day performs during the Hella Mega tour.

Hella Mega tour review – pop-punk’s middle-aged legends still have spunk

London Stadium Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Weezer combine for a pleasingly heavy romp through their hits, though there are spells when they lapse into cliche and gimmickry

B etter late than never. It’s been almost three years since pop-punk idols Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Weezer announced their Hella Mega tour and, thanks to Covid-19, only now are the triumvirate hitting the UK. A crowd of 75,000 congregate under a pale grey sky to see the royal family of their genre in one spot, preceded by the Aussie pub rockers Amyl and the Sniffers.

Amy Taylor’s rabble aren’t used to the glitz of stadiums and are more suited to venues where their in-your-face rock’n’roll ragers can bounce off the walls until they boot you in the chest. Tonight’s immensity sadly swallows up much of that force, and the quartet’s gravelly melodies are nowhere near gigantic enough to compensate. At least their singer is as vivacious a leader as ever, exploring every inch of the enormous stage.

Amy Taylor of Amyl and the Sniffers

Promoting the ode to vintage hard rock that is 2021 album Van Weezer , Rivers Cuomo and company are unrecognisable. The frontman’s traded his geek chic for a Metallica T-shirt and dad-rock locks – appropriate given the drastically upped oomph Weezer are bringing this evening. A cover of Enter Sandman epitomises this newfound power, although the live environs also make classics like Say It Ain’t So and Beverly Hills hit harder and heavier than they ever have on record.

Rivers Cuomo of Weezer performs at London Stadium

Fall Out Boy need to decide what their brand is. The Chicagoans have peddled gleefully tongue-in-cheek pop-punk (with increasing emphasis on the “pop” as their career’s progressed) since 2003. Yet, they seize their stage in front of an all-black backdrop, and the emergence of a haunted house drum riser for Dance, Dance implies an affinity for horror. Thnks fr th Mmrs, This Ain’t a Scene and My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark all reliably set the stadium aflutter, even if the numbers played in between can’t lift themselves above pop-punk archetypes.

Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy.

American Idiot, Holiday, Know Your Enemy, Boulevard of Broken Dreams: Green Day commence with a tetralogy of their biggest hits, and an onslaught of pyrotechnics and crowd repartee only accentuates the excitement. As much as it’s a euphoric opening salvo, it also means that the Californians peak early. Their remaining 90 minutes are all diminishing returns and repeated tricks.

When Billie Joe Armstrong hauls a fan onstage to play guitar, barely an hour after doing the same for another to let them sing, there’s an inescapable sense of Groundhog Day tedium. It takes nothing less than Wake Me Up When September Ends, Jesus of Suburbia and Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) in sequence – the latter two endowed with enough fireworks to overstimulate a pyromaniac – to recapture the high of when this set first started. Nonetheless, Billie informs his rabid crowd: “It took us 1,000 days to get here, but we made it!” and the roars in return telegraph that many found this worth the wait.

Hella Mega Tour featuring Green Day, Weezer a rockin' good time at Historic Crew Stadium

mega tour

It took only a moment for Billie Joe Armstrong to remind those at Historic Crew Stadium what they were there for.

The rain had held off, the sun was down and the Green Day frontman was just getting the closing set of the Hella Mega Tour underway Tuesday night when he yelled out a command to a crowd that had just watched the Interrupters, Weezer and Fall Out Boy play their styles of rock music for the better part of three hours.

“Put your phones away!” Armstrong yelled before emphasizing the fact that, after nearly two years of waiting, this tour had finally arrived. And for the next 90 minutes, Green Day’s frenetic frontman did his part to make up for lost time with a set heavy on the hits that opened with “American Idiot,” ended with “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” and closed with red, white, blue and finally green fireworks.

Announced in September 2019, this tour was initially slated to take place last summer and did not include a Columbus date. Once the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the live music industry, the participants punted their hopes to 2021 and eventually announced rescheduled dates — as well as new ones — in late May.

Fall Out Boy, Weezer pay homage to Columbus Crew, Historic Crew Stadium

The show was a celebration of rock 'n' roll, something Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz made sure to point out during his band’s set that featured a massive dance-along to “Dance Dance”, phones held aloft like lighters and even a flaming piano during another song. By the end, Stump closed out the band’s set in a Columbus Crew jersey. If rock music was indeed dead, Wentz said, why was the stadium packed?

It came after Weezer tore through a litany of hits led by singer, songwriter and frontman Rivers Cuomo, who came out dressed in a leather jacket and sporting a mustache and long hair. It was a fitting homage to the band’s latest effort, “Van Weezer,” a guitar-heavy album that was represented by three songs during the show as Cuomo rocked a Flying V electric guitar. The band played four songs from its classic eponymous debut, known as the “Blue Album,” and closed with “Buddy Holly.”

Cuomo also paid homage to the stadium where the United States men’s national soccer team famously defeated Mexico 2-0 in freezing temperatures on Feb. 28, 2001. Cuomo told fans that he was in attendance for the game, pointing out its significance in soccer history, and later shouted out Crew Circle of Honor member — and United States national team member — Brian McBride. Not to be outdone, drummer Patrick Wilson performed the band’s entire set while wearing a T-shirt reading “Ohio Against The World”.

That, plus a string of crowd-pleasers from “Island in the Sun” (complete with pink and purple beach balls) to “El Scorcho” and “Say It Ain’t So” had some in the crowd wondering why the band has gotten third billing on the tour.

Green Day headlines Hella Mega Tour rocking 21 songs

Green Day, though, deserved every bit of the headlining spot and somehow packed 21 songs into a tight window. Armstrong was all smiles throughout, constantly mixing in yells of “O-H!” with his customary “Hey-ooo!” call-and-answer bit. During “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” as the stadium switched off its lights and fans held their cellphones aloft, a low-flying airplane on eastward approach to the John Glenn International Airport passed noiselessly overhead, completely drowned out by the sounds of Armstrong’s crunching guitar, Tre Cool’s drumming and Mike Dirnt’s bass playing.

If there was a fault to be had with Green Day’s set, it was the complete omission of the band’s most recent album, “Father of All…”, released in February 2020. Of the band’s 21 songs, six came from breakthrough album “American Idiot” and four from “Dookie”, relegating the band’s rich history to compete for only nine spots on the setlist when factoring in two covers the band played. Otherwise, the classics lived up to their stature and the back half of the set provided a touching moment with single “Still Breathing” from 2016’s “Revolution Radio” album and its message of simply still being alive after enduring tragedy and loss.

The specter of the delta variant was still felt, if only briefly. No bands took the stage for jam sessions with others, and when Armstrong brought a kid onstage named Frank who appeared to be no more than 8 or 9 years old and was wearing a mask, the singer donned one himself while teaching him the chords to Operation Ivy’s “Knowledge.”

Otherwise, there was plenty of joy to be found, even if overwhelmed staffers handing out wrist bands for floor access caused lengthy delays for fans trying to get to floor seats, and lines for merchandise and food stretched throughout the concourses as all three food trucks brought in for the event quickly ran out of food.

On this night, it was a slice of normalcy again soundtracked by some of the best-known rock songs of the past 25 years.

As Armstrong yelled at one point: “That’s how we do it in Ohio, baby!”

He wasn’t wrong.

By Katrina Nattress

May 17, 2021

When Rivers Cuomo said he was still optimistic about the Hella Mega Tour happening this summer at the beginning of the year, it seemed like a lofty statement, but it looks like the Weezer frontman was right!

The Hella Mega Tour was a worldwide concert tour by the band Green Day , lasting from July 24, 2021 to July 2, 2022. The tour was also co-headlined by both Weezer and Fall Out Boy, who all three would play either their greatest hits or their newest work released around the tour's time. The purpose of the tour was to help show support for all of their newly released work, but for Green Day is called Father of All Motherfuckers , across 29 shows from two legs in North America and Europe.

Background [ ]

All three bands would announce the tour along with new material on September 10, 2019. Green Day that day would release their single called Father of All... along with announcing their new album called Father of All Motherfuckers. The tour was originally supposed to start around the beginning of 2020, but various legs and shows were postponed or cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On February 28, 2020, Green Day announced a number of shows from the now cancelled Oceania leg to be post-poned, before later being cancelled. As the end of May of 2020 followed, all shows were either pushed back to 2021 or were cancelled due to the pandemic. The Hella Mega Tour would officially begin on August 24th, 2021, with a sold out show in Arlington, Texas.

The tour was also supported by only two opening acts by different artists during the tour's two legs, with the exception of KennyHoopla taking the place of The Interrupters during the Summerfest 2022 Milwaukee concert. Amyl and The Sniffers would be the opening act of every show during the European leg of the tour.

Set List [ ]

During the tour, Green Day played a total of 27 songs, with 18 being apart of the setlist during every show. An average would have around 20 preformed songs, featuring no encores and almost none being from their most recent work. The following is a complete list of fully-played songs during the tour.

Tour Dates [ ]

Promotional performances [ ], reshuffles & cancellations [ ].

The tour was originally supposed to take place from March 2020 to August 2020 when the tour was first announced. However, due to the growing COVID-19 pandemic at the time, all shows were rescheduled to the summer of 2021, with the European leg being pushed further back to 2022. The Oceania leg would later cancelled around the summer of 2020, along with one show in Finland and Canada.

Rescheduled Legs [ ]

Both the North America and European leg were supposed to take place during the summer of 2020, when both were initially post-poned to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the Europe leg was then pushed further back to 2022 due to rising cases during the following year. During the schedule reshuffle, the Oceania leg would also be pushed back through to early 2021, before being ultimately cancelled. Out of the two remaining legs, only two concerts were cancelled due to the pandemic.

Cancelled Oceania Leg [ ]

The Oceania leg was made up of both concerts in Asia and Oceania, originally meant to kick off the tour starting in Singapore on March 8, 2020, before going through both current legs to end the tour at Auckland, New Zealand. However on February 28, 2020, all Asia tour dates were announced to be pushed back to early 2021. On July 15th, it was announced all Asia and Oceania tour dates would be cancelled and have their tickets refunded. Prior to the cancellation, the original tour dates for the Oceania leg were unchanged.

Special Cases [ ]

During the reshuffling of the European and North American tour legs, a show from Helsinki, Finland and one show from Toronto, Canada were ultimately cancelled due to the pandemic. During the first rescheduling, no shows from either leg were expected to be cancelled, but both concerts would not be considered for the second rescheduling.

Prior to the rescheduled European leg of the tour, Green Day would announce a solo concert in Moscow, Russia, originally expected to take place on May 24, 2020, before being pushed post-poned twice to May 29, 2022 due to the pandemic. However on February 27, the band would call off and cancel the concert due to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Reception [ ]

From the entirety of the Hella Mega Tour, the co-headlining band with Weezer and Fall Out Boy have estimated to gross well over $75 million between the three of them, with much of the profit coming from the North American leg alone, grossing over $65 million along with selling over 650,000 tickets. With the support for the new album, Green Day's Father of All Motherfuckers would sell over 240,000 copies both physically and digitally as of 2022. Despite the worldwide success of the tour, the album overall became the band's lowest selling work of their career. As for the singles releasing throughout the tour, they were widely received fairly decent from both fans and critics.

Live review: Hella Mega Tour, London Stadium

Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Weezer bring good times and greatest hits to the capital…

Live review: Hella Mega Tour, London Stadium

“I guess when they ask if rock music is back…” ponders Pete Wentz onstage, surveying the sold-out crowd during Fall Out Boy ’s hit-filled set this evening, “75,000 fucking people in London are saying, ‘Fuck yes!’”

Indeed, not only has our beloved genre made quite the comeback in the three years since FOB announced their plans to hit the road with Green Day and Weezer in stadiums, but given everything that’s happened between now and then, it’s just nice to have music back, full-stop. That’s evident from every single inch of the London Stadium, with those both on and offstage tonight clearly here to do one thing, and one thing only: have a hella (mega) good time.

mega tour

Fresh off a rough and rowdy opener from Amyl And The Sniffers , perennial summer favourites Weezer step things up a gear with a bangers-only set. Flanked by huge lightning bolts and pastel coloured production, this is stadium rock on their terms, with loveable frontman Rivers Cuomo in peak ’80s metalhead mode (replete with long hair, Metallica tee and a lot of denim). Backed by a wall of amps, the added bombast fills every corner of the venue, splitting the thickening clouds in two, and drenching the 75,000-strong crowd in sunlight for Pork And Beans, My Name Is Jonas and Hash Pipe. There is nothing better than Weezer in the sunshine and this hour-long greatest hits session only serves to underline this long-known fact. Even two guitar malfunctions during Island In The Sun can’t derail the fun, with Rivers conducting the London Stadium to hum the riff instead – a deed then rewarded by a joyous rendition of Africa by Toto (the second of two covers, following a belting Enter Sandman earlier in the set). The closing one-two of slacker anthem Say It Ain’t So and a confetti-covered Buddy Holly send the already-heaving stadium into raptures, almost making up for the years-long wait. Truly one of the greatest live bands on the planet.

mega tour

There’s nothing else for Fall Out Boy to do but take it up a notch – and they surely do. Pete wastes no time in showing off his spectacular, Rammstein -esque flamethrower bass during commanding opener The Phoenix, while vocalist Patrick Stump (who already possesses one of the most impressive voices in rock) has genuinely rarely sounded better. Sugar, We’re Goin Down gets an enormous sing-along early on, while the dance-tastic Uma Thurman and emo-pop-punk throwback of Grand Theft Autumn / Where Is Your Boy? showcases just how much of a musical force the Chicago quartet have become since their scrappy early days.

Yes, this is a massive night in east London – but across town Elton John is saying farewell in Hyde Park. The London Stadium still gets its share of the Rocket Man, though, courtesy of Save Rock And Roll, and Patrick’s genuinely jaw-dropping impression of the iconic English crooner from his piano. Speaking of music icons, Metallica’s Lars Ulrich gets a namedrop during FOB’s set too, with Pete joking before a rowdy This Ain’t A Scene, It’s An Arms Race that, “I feel like if we can get, like, six mosh-pits going, maybe he would pick up my calls…” The crowd duly oblige and continue the party into a deliriously fun closing run of I Don’t Care, Thnks Fr Th Mmrs and Saturday. We’re sure you’ll be hearing from Lars any minute now, Pete.

mega tour

Bohemian Rhapsody. Blitzkrieg Bop. Drunk Bunny larking around onstage. Yes, it’s time – Green Day are finally here. Given the news coming from their home country today, there’s really only one song that should get things started. With his fist in the air, standing on a speaker, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong triumphantly strides out and launches straight into the American Idiot riff, sending the crowd wild. A genuinely unreal run of singles follows (seriously, what other bands can then play Holiday, Know Your Enemy, Boulevard Of Broken Dreams, Longview and Welcome To Paradise all in a row?!), with plenty of crowd interaction, a few ‘weeeeey-ohhhhh’s and thousands of phone lights in the air rounding out the full stadium show experience – something that Green Day have been pros at for literal decades now, and a skill that’s clearly not been lost in their time away.

mega tour

A cover of KISS ’ Rock And Roll All Nite brings something new (well… sort of) to their setlist – even if it’s not entirely necessary given just how many worthy songs they have themselves. Meanwhile, their legendary rendition of Operation Ivy ’s Knowledge and the aforementioned Know Your Enemy give two lucky fans the chance to join the band onstage – with the former keeping Billie Joe’s guitar afterwards. The one-two of King For A Day into The Isley Brothers’ Shout adds even more entertainment to proceedings – even if following it with a stunningly emotional Wake Me Up When September Ends feels a tiny bit jarring. With a particular focus on everything from 1994 breakthrough album Dookie through to 2009’s epic 21st Century Breakdown (while Weezer and Fall Out Boy do opt for entirely career-spanning sets), there’s simply no let-up tonight. And yet, somehow, Green Day still have the energy for a formidable Jesus Of Suburbia, with explosive pyro and fireworks erupting before the encore.

mega tour

Customary closer – or, at least, what we think will finish the show – Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) plays out as Billie Joe goes it alone. “There are 75,000 people here,” he gasps mid-song, taking a moment to try to absorb it all. “How the hell did this happen?!” Finally, a moving live debut of All The Young Dudes brings things to a glorious end, and we’re left safe in the knowledge that, if they had to, these 75,000 fans would happily wait another three years just for another night like this.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

Madonna Closes Out Celebration Tour in Front of Record-Setting 1.6 Million Fans in Brazil

By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

Madonna closed out her career-spanning Celebration Tour Saturday with a free concert at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s Copacabana Beach in front of 1.6 million fans, setting the record for the largest audience ever for a stand-alone concert by any artist in history.

The performance marked Madonna’s first time performing in Brazil since 2012, and was heralded as “a thank you to her fans for celebrating more than four decades of her music over the course of the epic global run of the tour,” Live Nation previously said of the event.

Copacabana Beach has long been a magnet for epic, well-populated shows, notably a Rolling Stones gig in 2006 that drew an estimated (and then record-setting) 1.5 million fans. Madonna’s show Saturday night toppled the record, with Live Nation putting the attendance at 1.6 million people who turned Copacabana Beach into “the world’s largest dancefloor.”
