For those either well versed in the Metric opus or those only acquainted with their most recent hits the Cureapalooza V.3 show was a complete eye opening success. The front band, The Elwins, did a superb job stoking the crowd of nearly 1,000 to a feverish pitch. When Metric hit the stage the audience was overwhelmed with a sound and light plethora that few had ever seen up this close before. Fortunately, I got there prior to the tidal wave of fans and was mere feet away from the stage. At Metric's previous show at the Scotia Bank Arena in April I sat in the VIP section which was nothing compared to last night's 'up close and intimate' affair. The range of songs interspersed with driving tempos and melodic renditions captivated all in attendance. It may be said by some naysayers that all in attendance were die-hard fans, but I went with someone relatively unfamiliar with Metric's work and as she bounced and gyrated to the beat I knew she was hooked! Guitars and percussion were bang on and wildly animated. Emily Haines' voice traversed the gamut of songs in fiery fashion. Her gymnastic gesturing convinced everyone that she was the Queen holding court. I still don't know how Emily can move so gracefully, yet dynamically and still lay out those lilting sounds with ease. All in all, coupled with a multi song encore, Metric demonstrated once again their powerhouse placement in not only Canadian, but International music rankings. Dan Bowyer~~~~~

Do you have a band you love so much you'd suspend your life for a while to follow them on tour, city to city, like a modern-day Deadhead? That's me and Metric. I haven't actually followed them, but I've seen them twice at the Masonic, and also when they opened for another artist last year in Oakland.

Metric put on a tight, focused show last night, with an emphasis on the more familiar hits from their large catalog. The sound mixing and light effects were on point, and overall it was another magnificent show.

I can't want to see them again.

Saw Metric twice! First time in San Diego this was a great concert even with the "interesting" weather! Thankfully it cleared before Metric hit the stage and We thoroughly enjoyed the night! Our second time was in Riverside at the Riverside Municipal Auditorium! A very beautiful venue! The show was full of energy and Metric was great! Sadly the sound was off, several other fans and I discussed this, Emily's vocals were too low and the guitar and bass almost drowned her out :( I have seen other shows here and this was not a problem then so I don't know what was going on. Other than that Metric rocked the house!!! I LOVE Metric!!!!!

The brief outing kicks off June 8th in Pioneertown and extends into July making additional stops in Wichita, Columbus, Niagara Falls, McKees Rocks and New Haven. Noel Gallagher’s High-Flying Birds And Garbage To Embark On Co-Headline North American Tour This Summer

METRIC TO JOIN THE BILL AS SPECIAL GUEST

Today,  Garbage  and  Noel Gallagher’s   High Flying Birds  have announced a co-headlining tour of North America for this summer. The tour, produced by Live Nation, features special guest  Metric  and will kick off in Auburn, Washington on June 2 nd .

This is the first time Noel and his High Flying Birds have hit the road in North America since 2019, when they made stops across the USA and Canada with the Smashing Pumpkins. The first tour date in Washington State coincides with the release day for Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ much anticipated 4th album  Council Skies .

2021 saw Garbage on an extensive tour following the release of their most recent album,  No Gods No Masters ; of the live shows,  Consequence  raved, “Once the curtain dropped, Garbage whipped the fans in the pit to a frenzy…clad in pink and rocking a mic stand adorned with a matching feathered boa, Manson revealed a rock star stage presence that has refined over the past two decades. At the Greek, Garbage proved they are going 20 years strong, and their legacy demands closer observation.”

Garbage and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds will be supported by Metric, who released their most recent album  Formentera  last year. It was their most commercially successful release in a decade and was accompanied by a sold-out tour spanning the US, Canada, the UK and Europe.

Canadian rockers Metric announced 2024 tour dates, billed as the Days Of Oblivion Summer Tour . "Days of Oblivion" is also the name of a song from the group's latest album, 2023's Formentera II .

New shows are scheduled at mid-sized venues from April into July in Virginia, North Carolina, Colorado, Utah, and Indiana. The band also have festival performances at Shaky Knees and Just Like Heaven.

As the Arctic Warms, Its Waters Are Emitting Carbon

Runoff from one of North America’s largest rivers is driving intense carbon dioxide emissions in the Arctic Ocean.

When it comes to influencing climate change, the world’s smallest ocean punches above its weight. It’s been estimated that the cold waters of the Arctic absorb as much as 180 million metric tons of carbon per year – more than three times what New York City emits annually – making it one of Earth’s critical carbon sinks. But recent findings show that thawing permafrost and carbon-rich runoff from Canada’s Mackenzie River trigger part of the Arctic Ocean to release more carbon dioxide (CO2) than it absorbs.

The study , published earlier this year, explores how scientists are using state-of-the-art computer modeling to study rivers such as the Mackenzie, which flows into a region of the Arctic Ocean called the Beaufort Sea. Like many parts of the Arctic, the Mackenzie River and its delta have faced significantly warmer temperatures in recent years across all seasons, leading to more melting and thawing of waterways and landscapes.

In this marshy corner of Canada’s Northwest Territories, the continent’s second largest river system ends a thousand-mile journey that begins near Alberta. Along the way, the river acts as a conveyor belt for mineral nutrients as well as organic and inorganic matter. That material drains into the Beaufort Sea as a soup of dissolved carbon and sediment. Some of the carbon is eventually released, or outgassed, into the atmosphere by natural processes.

Like a conveyer belt of carbon, the Mackenzie River, seen here in 2007 from NASA’s Terra satellite, drains an area of almost 700,000 square miles (1.8 million square kilometers) on its journey north to the Arctic Ocean. Some of the carbon originates from thawing permafrost and peatlands.

Scientists have thought of the southeastern Beaufort Sea as a weak-to-moderate CO2 sink, meaning it absorbs more of the greenhouse gas than it releases. But there has been great uncertainty due to a lack of data from the remote region.

To fill that void, the study team adapted a global ocean biogeochemical model called ECCO-Darwin, which was developed at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. The model assimilates nearly all available ocean observations collected for more than two decades by sea- and satellite-based instruments (sea level observations from the Jason-series altimeters, for example, and ocean-bottom pressure from the GRACE and GRACE Follow-On missions).

The scientists used the model to simulate the discharge of fresh water and the elements and compounds it carries – including carbon, nitrogen, and silica – across nearly 20 years (from 2000 to 2019).

The researchers, from France, the U.S., and Canada, found that the river discharge was triggering such intense outgassing in the southeastern Beaufort Sea that it tipped the carbon balance, leading to a net CO2 release of 0.13 million metric tons per year – roughly equivalent to the annual emissions from 28,000 gasoline-powered cars. The release of CO2 into the atmosphere varied between seasons, being more pronounced in warmer months, when river discharge was high and there was less sea ice to cover and trap the gas.

Ground Zero for Climate Change

Scientists have for decades studied how carbon cycles between the open ocean and atmosphere, a process called air-sea CO2 flux. However, the observational record is sparse along the coastal fringes of the Arctic, where the terrain, sea ice, and long polar nights can make long-term monitoring and experiments challenging.

“With our model, we are trying to explore the real contribution of the coastal peripheries and rivers to the Arctic carbon cycle,” said lead author Clément Bertin, a scientist at Littoral Environnement et Sociétés in France.

Such insights are critical because about half of the area of the Arctic Ocean is composed of coastal waters, where land meets sea in a complex embrace. And while the study focused on a particular corner of the Arctic Ocean, it can help tell a larger story of environmental change unfolding in the region.

Since the 1970s, the Arctic has warmed at least three times faster than anywhere else on Earth, transforming its waters and ecosystems, the scientists said. Some of these changes promote more CO2 outgassing in the region, while others lead to more CO2 being absorbed.

For example, with Arctic lands thawing and more snow and ice melting, rivers are flowing more briskly and flushing more organic matter from permafrost and peatlands into the ocean. On the other hand, microscopic phytoplankton floating near the ocean surface are increasingly taking advantage of shrinking sea ice to bloom in the newfound open water and sunlight. These plantlike marine organisms capture and draw down atmospheric CO2 during photosynthesis. The ECCO-Darwin model is being used to study these blooms and the ties between ice and life in the Arctic.

Scientists are tracking these large and seemingly small changes in the Arctic and beyond because our ocean waters remain a critical buffer against a changing climate, sequestering as much as 48% of the carbon produced by burning fossil fuels.

Princess Anne will jet off on a royal tour just days before Prince Harry is set to return to the UK.

The Princess Royal will travel to Canada from May 3 to 5 on an official visit to the Commonwealth country.

Prince Harry is also expected to return to the UK only a few days after his aunt returns from her tour for an Invictus Games event.

The Invictus Games 10th Anniversary Service was listed on St. Paul’s website for May 8, and on the official running order, the prince is set to speak at the service.

Harry’s wife, Meghan, is “rethinking” the trip as she doesn’t feel safe returning to the UK after Harry lost a court case over his police protection in Britain, according to a source.

Anne last visited Canada in 2023 when she visited the country twice within one month.

Apart from the date and country, the Palace has not released any further details of the princess’s visit.

In May 2023 the princess travelled to Canada to mark the 175th anniversary of the 8th Canadian Hussars.

Only a few weeks later in June 2023, Anne returned to attend a conference in Banff, Alberta in her role as President of The Duke of Edinburgh Commonwealth Study Conferences.

Princess Anne, who is widely regarded as the hardest-working royal, will be undertaking royal engagements two days before her royal tour and will get back to work on May 8.

On her trip to Canada last year, the Princess Royal was greeted by hundreds of people lining the streets hoping for a glimpse of the royal.

The princess has already undertaken an overseas tour to Sri Lanka and Dubai this year.

THE WOODLANDS, Texas — The first major of the LPGA Tour season gets underway on Thursday in The Woodlands, Texas, as 132 players tackle the challenging Club at Carlton Woods for The Chevron Championship. With a field chock full of the world’s top talent, it can be easy to overlook players who may not be making as many headlines as some of their counterparts when deciding who might fare well at a particular event.  

That said, here are a few players worth watching this week at The Chevron Championship:

Ariya Jutanugarn

Even though Ariya Jutanugarn has missed three cuts in her six total starts this year, she’s had some solid finishes thus far in her 10th season on the LPGA Tour, tying for 13th in her home country at the Honda LPGA Thailand and tying for 22nd at the HSBC Women’s World Championship at a challenging Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore. But maybe a better indicator of success at The Chevron Championship than her recent form is Jutanugarn’s past performances at Jack Nicklaus-designed golf courses. The Club at Carlton Woods was created by the Golden Bear, and the 12-time LPGA Tour winner played well in the first edition of The Chevron Championship held at the venue, carding four straight 71s en route to a T14 finish in 2023, which was her best major result last year. And funny enough, the two-time major champion captured her second and most recent major victory on a Jack Nicklaus design, winning the 2018 U.S. Women’s Open at Shoal Creek Golf Club in Shoal Creek, Ala., after defeating Hyo Joo Kim in a four-hole playoff. While that win came during one of the high points of Jutanugarn’s professional golf career, an era that saw her ascend to No. 1 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings for the second time not long after her U.S. Women’s Open victory, it still proves that she definitely knows how to tackle these types of golf courses and indicates that she could be a force to be reckoned with this week at The Chevron Championship.

Megan Khang threatened to become a Rolex First-Time Winner early at the 2023 Chevron Championship, sitting in a tie for second through 36 holes and a tie for third through 54 holes at The Club at Carlton Woods. But she ultimately finished in a tie for ninth, her second-best result in a major championship last season and an early momentum boost that helped her stay the course in search of her first LPGA Tour title later that year. In August 2023, Khang went on to win the CPKC Women’s Open at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver, Canada, outlasting former Rolex Rankings No. 1 Jin Young Ko in a playoff to become a Rolex First-Time Winner. Who’s to definitively say that Khang’s early success at The Chevron in April lifted her to victory in August, but, according to KPMG Performance Insights , Khang was tied for fourth in most strokes gained total in major championships last season, all of which took place before she won in Canada. That success can be attributed to her long game, as the Massachusetts native ranked third in strokes gained ball striking in majors last season (+1.72) and was ranked eighth in both strokes gained off the tee (+0.70) and strokes gained approach (+1.02) in those five events, according to KPMG Performance Insights. She also ended the 2023 LPGA Tour season ranked fourth in strokes gained approach (+1.10), a metric she is currently ranked fifth in through five events so far in 2024 (+1.21).

Atthaya Thitikul

Atthaya Thitikul is making her 2024 debut this week at The Chevron Championship after dealing with a left thumb injury that drastically extended her offseason. And while she’s certainly lacking competitive reps, don’t count the 21-year-old out at The Club at Carlton Woods. She finished in a tie for fourth in this tournament last year, carding four under-par rounds over the four tournament days in The Woodlands, Texas, a rare feat considering how challenging this venue can play depending upon the conditions. Statistically, the Thailand native ended her 2023 LPGA Tour season ranked second in strokes gained total, also ranking in the top 20 in both strokes gained off the tee (17) and strokes gained putting (12). But even though she didn’t win a tournament in 2023, Thitikul still earned a whopping 13 top-10 finishes, seven of which were top-five results and the most notable of which besides her T4 in Houston last year was her runner-up finish at the Maybank Championship in Malaysia, when she ultimately fell to Celine Boutier after a nine-hole playoff. Forecasting how she’ll play this week at The Chevron Championship might be a little unpredictable considering the physical challenges she’s faced in recent months, but with a solid history at The Club at Carlton Woods and that kind of 2023 resume in her back pocket, Thitikul just might be able to pull out a third LPGA Tour victory this week outside of Houston.

Albane Valenzuela

Switzerland native Albane Valenzuela might seem like a little bit of a wild card pick at The Chevron Championship, but the 26-year-old was another player who finished in a tie for fourth at The Club at Carlton Woods last April, firing rounds of 72-67-68-73 to earn her career-best finish in a major championship. This week marks her seventh career start in this event and fourth since she became an LPGA Tour member in 2020. It’s also her seventh tournament of the 2024 LPGA Tour season, and in her six previous events, she’s earned two top-15 results, finishing runner-up to Patty Tavatanakit at the Honda LPGA Thailand and tying for 15th at the Blue Bay LPGA. Statistically, her long game is in great shape heading into the major season, as Valenzuela currently ranks fourth in both strokes gained tee to green (+1.55) and strokes gained approach (+1.28), according to KPMG Performance Insights, strong performances in two metrics that should benefit her this week in The Woodlands, Texas as she works to become the season’s second Rolex First-Time Winner.

Taylor Swift’s ‘Poets’ Arrives With a Promotional Blitz (and a Second LP)

The pop superstar’s latest album was preceded by a satellite radio channel, a word game, a return to TikTok and an actual library. For her fans, more is always welcome.

Taylor Swift was already the most ubiquitous pop star in the galaxy, her presence dominating the music charts, the concert calendar, the Super Bowl, the Grammys.

Then it came time for her to promote a new album.

In the days leading up to the release of “The Tortured Poets Department” on Friday, Swift became all but inescapable, online and seemingly everywhere else. Her lyrics were the basis for an Apple Music word game . A Spotify-sponsored, Swift-branded “ library installation ,” in muted pink and gray, popped up in a shopping complex in Los Angeles. In Chicago, a QR code painted on a brick wall directed fans to another Easter egg on YouTube. Videos on Swift’s social media accounts, showing antique typewriters and globes with pins, were dissected for clues about her music. SiriusXM added a Swift radio station; of course it’s called Channel 13 (Taylor’s Version).

About the only thing Swift didn’t do was an interview with a journalist.

At this stage in Swift’s career, an album release is more than just a moment to sell music; it’s all but a given that “The Tortured Poets Department” will open with gigantic sales numbers, many of them for “ghost white,” “phantom clear” and other collector-ready vinyl variants . More than that, the album’s arrival is a test of the celebrity-industrial complex overall, with tech platforms and media outlets racing to capture whatever piece of the fan frenzy they can get.

Threads, the newish social media platform from Meta, primed Swifties for their idol’s arrival there, and offered fans who shared Swift’s first Threads post a custom badge. Swift stunned the music industry last week by breaking ranks with her record label, Universal, and returning her music to TikTok, which Universal and other industry groups have said pays far too little in royalties. Overnight, TikTok unveiled “The Ultimate Taylor Swift In-App Experience,” offering fans digital goodies like a “Tortured Poets-inspired animation” on their feed.

Before the album’s release on Friday, Swift revealed that a music video — for “Fortnight,” the first single, featuring Post Malone — would arrive on Friday at 8 p.m. Eastern time. At 2 a.m., she had another surprise: 15 more songs. “I’d written so much tortured poetry in the past 2 years and wanted to share it all with you,” she wrote in a social media post , bringing “The Anthology” edition of the album to 31 tracks.

“The Tortured Poets Department,” which Swift, 34, announced in a Grammy acceptance speech in February — she had the Instagram post ready to go — lands as Swift’s profile continues to rise to ever-higher levels of cultural saturation.

Her Eras Tour , begun last year, has been a global phenomenon, crashing Ticketmaster and lifting local economies ; by some estimates, it might bring in as much as $2 billion in ticket sales — by far a new record — before it ends later this year. Swift’s romance with the Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has been breathlessly tracked from its first flirtations last summer to their smooch on the Super Bowl field in February. The mere thought that Swift might endorse a presidential candidate this year sent conspiracy-minded politicos reeling .

“The Tortured Poets Department” — don’t even ask about the missing apostrophe — arrived accompanied by a poem written by Stevie Nicks that begins, “He was in love with her/Or at least she thought so.” That establishes what many fans correctly anticipated as the album’s theme of heartbreak and relationship rot, Swift’s signature topic. “I love you/It’s ruining my life,” she sings on “Fortnight.”

Fans were especially primed for the fifth track, “So Long, London,” given that (1) Swift has said she often sequences her most vulnerable and emotionally intense songs fifth on an LP, and (2) the title suggested it may be about Joe Alwyn, the English actor who was Swift’s boyfriend for about six years, reportedly until early 2023 . Indeed, “So Long” is an epic breakup tune, with lines like “You left me at the house by the heath” and “I’m pissed off you let me give you all that youth for free.” Tracks from the album leaked on Wednesday, and fans have also interpreted some songs as being about Matty Healy , the frontman of the band the 1975, whom Swift was briefly linked to last year.

The album’s title song starts with a classic Swift detail of a memento from a lost love: “You left your typewriter at my apartment/Straight from the tortured poets department.” It also name-drops Dylan Thomas, Patti Smith and, somewhat surprisingly given that company, Charlie Puth, the singer-songwriter who crooned the hook on Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again,” a No. 1 hit in 2015. (Swift has praised Wiz Khalifa and that song in the past.)

Other big moments include “Florida!!!,” featuring Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine, in which Swift declares — after seven big percussive bangs — that the state “is one hell of a drug.” Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner, the producers and songwriters who have been Swift’s primary collaborators in recent years, both worked on “Tortured Poets,” bringing their signature mix of moody, pulsating electronic tracks and delicate acoustic moments, like a bare piano on “Loml” (as in “love of my life”).

As the ninth LP Swift has released in five years, “Tortured Poets” is the latest entry in a remarkable creative streak. That includes five new studio albums and four rerecordings of her old music — each of which sailed to No. 1. When Swift played SoFi Stadium near Los Angeles in August, she spoke from the stage about her recording spurt, saying that the forced break from touring during the Covid-19 pandemic had spurred her to connect with fans by releasing more music.

“And so I decided, in order to keep that connection going,” she said , “if I couldn’t play live shows with you, I was going to make and release as many albums as humanly possible.”

That was two albums ago.
