Mozambique Tours & Safari Packages

Mozambique’s main draw are the countless paradisiacal palm-fringed beaches that line its 2,600km/1,616mi Indian Ocean coastline and innumerable offshore islands. Serviced by some first-class luxury resorts, it is the perfect country for a relaxing beach holiday, as well as for more active marine pursuits such as snorkeling, diving and coastal safaris. Inland, Mozambique’s national parks and reserves were once major attractions, but a prolonged civil war that ended in 1992 left them poached out and depleted of wildlife. Despite this, recent rehabilitation efforts mean that some of these little-visited parks are now slowly emerging as worthwhile goals for adventurers seeking an off-the-beaten-track safari experience.

6 Questions About Mozambique Tours

Ariadne van Zandbergen

Answered by

Ariadne van zandbergen.

mozambique tourism packages

Why should I go to Mozambique?

“There are plenty of reasons to go to Mozambique. With its endlessly long, unspoiled Indian Ocean coastline, Mozambique is the ultimate beach destination. The picture-perfect setting of turquoise waters lapping on white sandy beaches fringed by swaying palm trees is like a dream come true. The marine life is phenomenal. You’ll have the opportunity to dive or snorkel with shoals of colorful fish zigzagging around the beautiful coral reefs. Or you can take a boat trip further offshore to get close to dolphins and whales. Real adventure enthusiasts might want to swim with whale sharks. Meeting the local Mozambicans is easy; these laid-back people love to welcome visitors to their piece of paradise. Go back in time with them on a traditional dhow cruise, check out the art deco Portuguese-influenced architecture, or dance the night away in one of Maputo’s edgy nightclubs. Whatever rocks your boat, don’t walk away without tasting the many tantalizing Mozambican dishes, especially the famous LM prawns.”

Where should I go in Mozambique?

“There is no shortage of stunning beaches in Mozambique. The most popular resort towns are in the south of the country. Ponta do Ouro, located at the southernmost extremity of Mozambique, is usually visited from South Africa and is a great place for diving and fishing. Nearby Maputo Special Reserve is a sanctuary for an estimated 450 to 500 coastal elephants. Nature-lovers will enjoy the bush-and-beach combo in a pristine protected environment. Other resort towns further north include Xai-Xai, Bilene, Tofo and Vilankulo. The latter is perhaps the biggest tourist hub in Mozambique. You’ll find lots of activities available here, including boat trips to the nearby Bazaruto Archipelago where you’ll enjoy some of the best snorkeling and diving reefs in the country. While you can visit these reefs from mainland Mozambique, staying on one of the archipelago’s islands is a more exclusive option. With several luxury lodges to choose from, the islands are ideal for a romantic getaway. More remote and less developed is the string of islands in the north, known as Quirimbas Archipelago. As is the case further south, the main attractions are the beaches and the marine wildlife, such as whales, dolphins, turtles, dugongs and a magnificent coral reef with associated fish. Aside from these natural wonders, you’ll get a taste of the country’s turbulent history with historical landmarks, such as the old Portuguese fort on Ibo Island.”

Can I extend my African safari with a trip to Mozambique?

“Although Mozambique has plenty to offer for a stand-alone holiday, it is also the perfect companion to a safari in East or southern Africa. It is very easy to add some days in Mozambique to a South Africa safari, for example. Connections are usually good from Kenya and Tanzania, though you might need an extra flight hop. There are few beaches in East and southern Africa that can really compete with the islands of Mozambique as idyllic destinations. The water is always warm, the reefs protect the shore from big waves, the marine life is incredibly varied and the islands are totally unspoiled. It is no surprise that you’ll find some of the most exquisite lodges here. They cater to families, newlyweds, adventure enthusiasts and people wanting to just get away from it all for a couple of days.”

Which parks should I visit on a Mozambique safari?

“While Mozambique is mostly rated as a beach destination, it has some parks and reserves worth visiting too. None of these parks competes with the top safari destinations in the likes of Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa. However, if you’re looking for a bit of an off-the-beaten-track adventure, they have a lot to offer. Gorongosa National Park, located at the southern end of the Rift Valley, incorporates a great variety of landscapes and habitats, including lakes, savannahs, woodland, mountains and rainforest. You’re likely to see elephants and plenty of antelope species here, and lions are making a strong comeback too. Limpopo, Banhine and Zinave National Parks all form part of Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a vast cross-border conservation initiative that also incorporates Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe and South Africa’s world-famous Kruger National Park. Limpopo NP is the most regularly visited of Mozambique’s inland parks, but most of this traffic is merely in transit between Kruger and the Mozambican coast. And while Limpopo is home to all of the Big Five, wildlife densities are very low, partly due to a lack of permanent water. The recently rehabilitated Zinave NP, by contrast, is an off-the-beaten gem where you stand a good chance of spotting elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippo and white rhino, along with a wide variety of antelope. Predators that prowl Zinave include lion and leopard but densities are low and sightings very rare. Set along the far south coast of Mozambique, Maputo National Park is home to elephant, zebra, hippo and several species of antelope. This scenic park now incorporates several oceanfront lodges that offer a truly special bush-and-beach experience.”

What is the best time of the year for a holiday in Mozambique and/or a Mozambique safari?

“The tropical climate of Mozambique makes it suitable as a beach destination throughout the year. However, the months of December to March can be very wet and torrential rains are not uncommon over this period. Underwater visibility for snorkeling and diving is best from April to June and from September to November, when the sea tends to be calm. The dry months from July to October are best for wildlife viewing. At this time animals congregate around lakes and rivers and the thinning bush makes spotting easier.”

How much will this tour cost?

“There are several variables determining the price of a Mozambique tour. However, as a guideline, you can expect a tour package to cost around US$300 to US$500 per person per day. The level of accommodation is the biggest factor. Most beach resorts fall in the mid-range to luxury span, but there are a few budget options as well. If you’re looking for a tour visiting several places in the country, you might need some internal flights, which will add to the price. When available, a group tour might be more cost-effective than a private tour. Taking all these variables into account makes for a wide range of prices.”

Best time to visit mozambique.

June to August is considered the best period to visit as the weather is cooler and drier. Later in the dry season (in late August and September) the temperatures start to climb, but this is the best time to see big game and enjoy the sunshine on the coast. The best time for bird watching is early in the rainy season, which usually runs from November to December.

Geography and Environment

Located in Southern  Africa , Mozambique shares land borders with  Malawi ,  South Africa ,  Tanzania ,  Zambia ,  Zimbabwe  and  Swaziland . The eastern side of the country runs along the Indian Ocean, giving Mozambique plenty of coast line crucial for recreation, trade, tourism and the fishing industry. Inland, mountainous terrain extends along the western and northern borders with the Limpopo and the Zambezi Rivers running through the country into the sea.

Top 5 Coastal Pursuits in Mozambique

1. scuba diving.

Home to perennially warm waters, pristine coral reefs and a wide variety of marine life, Mozambique is one of Africa's best spots to dive. Explore the archipelago and find exquisite tropical fish, graceful rays, rare dugongs and (if you're lucky), colossal whale sharks.

2. Snorkeling

Travelers not into diving don't have to miss out on the underwater wonders, as snorkeling opens an exhilarating (and often cheaper) window into the colorful creations that live under the waterline.

3. Beach Football

Like most African countries, the locals of Mozambique love a game of football. It won't be hard to find a casual game of beach football on the coast of Mozambique and local kids are usually happy to have a traveler or two join in.

Taking to Mozambique's crystalline seas aboard a traditional dhow is one of the more mellow ways to enjoy the coast. Laze on deck, take in the sun and scenery and watch the islands glide by, just as locals have done for centuries.

5. Sandboarding

Forget the ocean for a while and experience a wild ride on Mozambique's dunes. Sandboarding is comparable to snowboarding and with Mozambique possessing some enormous dunes, this is a top spot for experienced and novice boarders to get some thrills.

andBeyond Benguerra Island

Mozambique nestles in the south-eastern corner of Africa and boasts a gorgeous stretch of pristine coastline and the warm Indian Ocean. Dotted with white sand beaches, coral islands, and protected marine parks; Mozambique is perfect for a tropical beach vacation and is easily combined with a big five safari experience in South Africa.

Travelers can explore the bustling city of Maputo , or the palm-fringed islands of Ponta De Ouro , Bilene , Xai-Xai , Inhambane , Vilanculos , Bazaruto Island , Benguerra Island , Pemba , and the Quirimbas Archipelago . Whichever exotic destination you choose, you can look forward to a vacation full of adventure. Mozambique is the ultimate destination for snorkeling, sunset cruises, horse-riding, dolphin tours, scuba diving, and basking in the sun.

Catering to solo explorers, couples, and families; Mozambique boasts a wide selection of world-class hotels, lodges and resorts that afford gorgeous ocean views, exceptional hospitality, and sumptuous Mozambiquean cuisine.

The question of when to travel to Mozambique depends on many things including your interests, exactly where you want to visit and why you're going.

The country broadly follows South Africa’s weather pattern, with the rains falling largely between December and March .

This does vary a little between the north and south of the country, with the rains lasting a few weeks longer in the north than the south, but the pattern is the same. Humidity can be uncomfortably high during this period.

By around April or May the rains subside, the sun comes out and the humidity drops – better weather spreads gradually from the south to the north.

June to October is the dry season, with often perfect tropical weather: clear skies, plenty of sun and almost no rain. This is the best time for most people to visit Mozambique. Although still tropical, June, July and August are Mozambique's coolest months; you'll need a light duvet at night, even though the temperature reaches over 30°C by day. During September and October it remains dry as daytime temperatures climb, though it cools down a lot at night.

November is a less predictable month of transition. Sometimes the rains start, although many days remain sunny and hot. The rains generally start earlier in the north of the country.

Mozambique has become a favorite beach and island holiday destination. The warm, crystal blue water of the Indian Ocean makes it ideal for big game fishing, safaris, scuba diving and romantic getaways.

Two clusters of islands on the horizon include the Bazaruto Archipelago and the Quirimbas Archipelago – perfect for slowing down and enjoying the easy pace of island life, fresh seafood and sunset cruises aboard a traditional Dhow.

There’s more to Mozambique than laid-back island living, it also offers a plethora of big game, with the game reserves being a popular choice for safari, including the beautiful Gorongosa National Park.

Ponta do Ouro

Ponta do Ouro is a town in the extreme south of Mozambique, lying on the Mozambique Channel south of Maputo and just north of the border with South Africa. It is known for its beach, for its dolphins and for its offshore diving and deep-sea fishing. Must see attractions include a small shop called Ponki which sells authentic hand-woven kikois at affordable prices and the bustling downtown market. Fresh seafood is displayed in colorful cooler boxes and you can buy enormous crayfish, lobsters, prawns, and fish.

Maputo is the fascinating capital city of Mozambique. With its Portuguese colonial heritage, its vibrant residents, bustling markets and its delicious seafood cuisine, there are plenty of tourist attractions for everyone in Maputo. Must see attractions include the Natural History Museum, the Old Portuguese Fort, Inhaca and Portuguese Islands accessible by ferry, the Maputo Elephant Reserve, and the beautiful Maputo Central Railway Station which was designed by Gustave Eiffel.

Vilanculos is a small, vibrant, coastal town 700 kilometers from the Mozambique capital, Maputo. It boasts a new international airport and is the gateway to the idyllic offshore island of Bazaruto Archipelagos. Vilanculos is a piece of paradise with dazzling powder-white beaches, coconut palms, crystal blue waters, superb all-year-round temperate climate and is the perfect hideaway for a holiday that offers a perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. Adventure comes in so many forms – best marlin fishing in the world, snorkeling, boating, diving, kite surfing and just good old swimming. Dhow sailboat trips and motorboat trips are offered by many to fulfill your adrenaline rush or provide the amazing opportunity of swimming with dolphins or sea turtles.Vilanculos is just pure bliss!

Tofo is a coastal town in southeastern Mozambique, near the town of Inhambane. It's known for the curved Tofo Beach and nearby coral reefs which attract sea life. Sea turtles and huge manta rays circle at Manta Reef. Tofo is one of the best destinations for divers to see whale sharks and is a surfers paradise. Discover the small African street market where you can buy fresh produce and small odds and ends. If you are an angler, go fishing for King Mackerel, Dorado, Wahoo, Bonito and Yellowfin Tuna during peak season from June to August. Or hire a horse from the stables and ride along the beach in warm sea breezes. Alternatively laze on the beach all day swimming, tanning and reading long novels.

Bazaruto Archipelago

The Bazaruto Archipelago consists of six idyllic islands lying off the Mozambique coastal town of Vilankulo (Vilanculos): Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina (Paradise Island), Bangue and Pansy Shell Island. Mozambique Holidays to the Archipelago are some of the best on the African continent. Renowned as the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean” the Bazaruto Archipelago offers exclusive accommodation options, relaxation, and incredible sunrises and sunsets. The Bazaruto Archipelago is a protected Marine National Park with unique habitats and species; a paradise for divers who will discover groups of dolphin, humpback whales, whale sharks, sharks, manta rays and turtles.

Bazaruto Island

Bazaruto Island lies in Bazaruto National Park, off the coast of southern Mozambique. Resorts dot the island’s white beaches, and it’s known for marine life like turtles and dugong. The clear waters of Two Mile Reef are filled with colorful fish, reef sharks, and moray eels, while the deeper area in Indigo Bay is home to sailfish and marlin. Traditional dhow boats run to nearby islands Santa Carolina and Benguerra. Bazaruto Island is ideal for honeymooners with only three resorts occupying the island.

Benguerra Island

Benguerra Island in Mozambique is the second largest island in the Bazaruto Archipelago, which broke away from the mainland thousands of years ago. Benguerra Island is approximately 55 square kilometers in extent, ensuring guests ample privacy within this idyllic paradise. The Island declared a National Park in 1971 sustains a diverse population of fauna and flora including forest, savannah and wetland ecosystems. Benguerra Island offers pristine beaches and unspoiled coral reefs teeming with marine life. Benguerra is an underwater wonderland for divers, with a rich variety of tropical fish species complemented by Africa’s only population of the rare dugong. The deep Mozambique Channel, which runs alongside the island, is renowned for its game fish and Benguerra Island offers some of the world’s best catch-and-release deep sea fishing and fly fishing opportunities.

Quirimbas Islands

Stretching more than 100 kilometers along the Indian Ocean, The Quirimbas Archipelago is set just off the northern coast of Mozambique. Many of its islands are part of Quirimbas National Park, which is known for coral reefs and waters inhabited by dolphins, whales and endangered dugongs (sea cows). Secluded Matemo, Medjumbe, and Vamizi islands have long beaches and phenomenal dive sites. Mangrove-covered Ibo Island features colonial-era ruins, including forts.  The Quirimbas Islands offer unique, unspoiled accommodation choices for visitors all year round.

The ultimate Mozambique holiday destination, Ibo Island has a lost world appeal and a rich history - an island that was once a trading post for slaves and ivory. Meet the people of Ibo, a fascinating cultural blend of European, Indian, Arabic and Chinese. They still follow and respect old Mozambique tribal customs and tribal religions on this historical island. On Ibo Island you can experience fully guided, tailor-made, mobile island hopping dhow and kayak safaris. It is the best way to explore the exotic islands, pristine mangroves, and exquisite coral reefs. It is also an ideal location to savor the incredible experience of swimming with wild dolphins in their natural environment or indulge in a private castaway picnic in a deserted tropical paradise known as Mogundula Island.

Matemo Island

Surrounded by white sandy beaches and the deep blue ocean, Matemo Island is located in the beautiful Quirimbas Archipelago in Mozambique. Matemo Island offers the warm Indian Ocean, spectacular sunsets, unspoiled beaches, as well as the incredible world of marine life that inhabits the Quirimbas National Park. The beautiful and protected tropical waters around Matemo Island are known as one of Mozambique's best-kept secrets. Diving is the ideal way to discover the magnificent marine ecosystem. The area is well known to offer some of the most spectacular fishing in the world. Other activities include snorkeling, sailing, waterskiing, windsurfing, and kayaking.

Pemba Island, known as "The Green Island" in Arabic, is an island forming part of the Zanzibar Archipelago, lying within the Swahili Coast in the Indian Ocean. Pemba is a popular tourist destination for water sport and diving enthusiasts. Pemba Bay forms a huge harbor and stunning coral reefs lie close to shore providing wonderful diving and snorkeling adventures. The surrounding landscape of the bay is characterized by forests of Baobab trees growing down to the shoreline. Dhow safaris are also a highlight and popular way to sail around the bay and beyond.

Gorongosa National Park

Gorongosa National Park is a preserved area in the Great Rift Valley of central Mozambique and has been the featured park for several National Geographic documentaries. A successful conservation story - Gorongosa’s forests and savannahs are home to lions, hippos, and elephants. Lake Urema and its surrounding wetlands and rivers attract scores of water birds. The multi-tiered Murombodzi Falls spills over jagged rocks on the slopes of Mount Gorongosa. Limestone gorges and bat-filled caves define Cheringoma Plateau. Garongosa offers open vehicle game drives through a diversity of habitat, wildlife, and outstanding birdlife. You will have the opportunity to look over spectacular floodplains and explore mystical fever tree and palm forests whilst searching for the resident wildlife. A remarkable diversity of antelope, numerous primates, and great birdlife are always encountered. With a bit of luck, you could find lions, large elephant herds, buffalo, hippopotamus and some really enormous crocodiles.

Anja is awesome!
Anja is awesome!! She went above and beyond for me as I had several changes until I locked in my bucket list itinerary and then my friend cancelled. She wasn't mad and just went about cancelling her portion which saved me money in the long run. Anja is a true professional regardless and I have been dealing with her since Sept 2023. Cannot wait until my trip in Sept 2024.

Shann was beyond amazing
Shann was beyond amazing. Listened to our needs, communicated super-efficiently and gave really honest excellent advice. She was so patient, kind and professional. The time difference across the globe made no difference. I am so excited for the itinerary she has put together. I usually cobble my own itinerary together for our holidays and it’s so time consuming and hard work. This was a piece of cake! Thank you Shann.
Great planning and service
Great planning and service, and everything worked like clockwork. We booked an Inyari Lodge safari with air with Safari.com. it wasn't clear if there will be 2 or three of us, so with Candis' help we booked a family chalet for 2 and added the third later when it was confirmed he can come. Candis put us on flights that maximized our game drive time (unlike some of the other guests) so we got all 6 drives in 3 nights. The lodge was great. Especially the game drives. We saw more than we hoped for. Additionally, Safari.com's insurance was very competitive. Highly recommended.

Choosing when to travel to Mozambique, will greatly depend on what you have planned for your dream holiday to this magnificent African safari destination. Mozambique has a tropical climate, with a wet season from November to April and a dry season from May to October.

The average daytime temperatures during the dry season vary depending on the region. In the northern and central coastal areas, it typically ranges from the mid-20s to low 30s Celsius. Inland areas can be hotter, with temperatures ranging from the mid-30s to low-40s Celsius.

The dry season is perfect for beach and water-based activities like snorkeling and diving. It is also the best time to go on safari in Mozambique’s national parks. Off the east coast of Mozambique you will find the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park . Often described as one of the most spectacular destinations on earth because it is paradise for marine life. Pemba lies on the coast and is popular for water sports and diving. Coral reefs are close to the shore so they are perfect to explore. In the center of Pemba you will find an authentic local market. Here talented tradesmen and women sell traditional art, crafts and silverware.

Our  Mozambique Tours offer the best routes for your amazing journey while traveling on a Mozambique Safari.

Quirimbas Archipelago

While some areas are rustic with poor roads, Quirimbas Archipelago in the north of Mozambique is tropical bliss. Either wade in warms waters or hike through mangroves during low tide. Brace yourself for friendly, energetic local children who are dying to meet and play with you!

Bazaruto Island

Bazaruto  is an island situated around 80 kilometers southeast of the Save River mouth. It is the biggest island in the entire Bazaruto Archipelago. While it’s crystal clear waters make it the most popular tourist destination in Mozambique.

As a result, the islands of Bazaruto are a paradise getaway. Furthermore they offer a wide range of private accommodation. Tranquil sunsets and solitude are typical of your time spent on the Bazaruto islands. Travelers can enjoy pristine and uncrowded beaches which are fringed with palm trees swaying in the breeze . In contrast to moments of relaxation, there are a range of exciting activities to enjoy. These include superb bird-watching and fantastic diving and snorkeling. An exhilarating fishing trip is also popular with many visitors.

Tours to Bazaruto Island

Mozambique Dive and Snorkel

The archipelago has earned its reputation as the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’. Boats are the only means of transport between the islands thereby preserving the integrity of the sealife.

The coral reefs and sparkling waters offer some of the finest diving in the world. Dive sites are not crowded and as a result the sea life is diverse and plentiful. Some sites reach up to 30 meters deep with amazing visibility. Diving here you will see sheltered reefs brimming with dolphins, humpback whales, whale sharks, manta rays and turtles.

Also known as ‘Terre de Boa Gente’ meaning Land of Good People, the city of Inhambane is in the south of Mozambique. While 470 kilometers northeast of Maputo, the town is quiet and rich in history. It was the southernmost port which the Arabs used for the slave trading industry. Vasco da Gama visited the area in 1498 and claimed Inhambane Bay for Portugal. This then led to the Portuguese creating a trading post here in 1534. Yet in the 20th century, Maputo became the primary center of Mozambique. As a result Inhambane’s status weakened and the town’s economy suffered.

The city now contains a museum and bustling market. The main market or ‘Mercado Central’ is along the central avenue. At the market you can buy local produce including spices and vegetables along with fresh prawns, fish and cashew nuts. The province is the second largest cashew producer after Nampula and also grows coconut and citrus fruit trees.

Praia do Tofo

Praia do Tofo is commonly known as ‘Tofo’ and is in the south-eastern region of Mozambique. While only a small town, it is also a huge tourist attraction. This coastal town on the Indian Ocean is only 22 kilometers from the city of Inhambane. It is a popular destination with plenty of beach villas and stunning scenery along it’s shoreline. Tofo is also home to diving retreats, drawing travelers to it’s beautiful reefs which are rich with marine life.

The people of Tofo are friendly and hospitable and in addition the town has vibrant night life with great restaurants. On your Mozambique Safari you can go diving and snorkeling with incredible sea life. These include Manta Rays and Sea Turtles. Tofo is also one of the finest destinations for divers to spot Whale Sharks.

Activities on Mozambique Tours

Mozambique has the best fishing of the Eastern Indian Ocean. As a result it has become a top destination for Marlin fishing. The season runs from early October until the end of January. Bazaruto Archipelago also offer saltwater fly-fishing for you to try your hand at catching a prized bonefish.

Professional scuba diving and snorkeling operators offer you the chance to further explore the coast .  Off the shores of Inhambane you will find the world-renowned Manta Reef and Galleria. These diving spots have Giant Manta Rays, Whale Sharks, Turtles and other thriving sealife to discover.

Experience sailing in a traditional dhow around the Archipelago. These islands offer gorgeous azure waters, bronzed beaches lined with palm trees and untouched coral reefs.

Weather in Mozambique

Mozambique has a tropical climate with lovely sunshine throughout the year. Average temperatures are around 28°C to 32°C  which makes it a perfect holiday destination to enjoy outdoor activities. The  rainy season  is from November to April yet it still remains hot and humid especially during  December and February . In contrast inland is slightly cooler with heavier rainfall mostly during January and March .

However the Southern regions of Mozambique are prone to cyclones. So during the months of January and February the region experiences torrential downpours . Hence the Bazaruto Archipelago is best avoided during the cyclone season.

May to November is the Winter season. Travel during this time if you prefer the cooler temperatures of 15 to 21 degrees Celsius. Game viewing in Mozambique  is also ideal during the  dry season particularly from August to September . As the vegetation thins out you will have greater visibility as animals congregate around the rivers and waterholes .

Whether your dream is to search for dugongs off of Vilanculos, or to dive with numerous species of sharks, or to swim with whale sharks and dive with giant manta rays, Travel To Mozambique gives you the option to try it all.

With Travel To Mozambique, you can also be confident that you are supporting a Fair-Trade Certified company. We work hard to support and employ local Mozambicans and local environmental initiatives. As well, we only work with lodges, dive centers, and operators who are ethical in their practices. We believe in fully supporting this wonderful country and keeping our tours as grassroots and local as possible.

TESTIMONIALS

"I travelled to Kruger Park and to Tofo beach with the invaluable help of TAC. The trip was great and we loved the safari as well as the wonderful underwater landscape, but above all, the best thing about the trip was getting to know the people of Mozambique. Both locals and foreigners who worked there were unbelievable."
