Pro Wakeboard Tour Stop #4 Lenoir City
- By Ben "Benny G" Greenwood
- September 1, 2023
The final stop of the Supra Boats Pro Wake Tour took place in the headline sponsor’s backyard in Lenoir City, TN and saw Tyler Higham win the overall PWT title.
All eyes were on Higham, and Jamie Hauser. Prior to the season kickoff in May very few would have expected the final event to feature PWT Rookie Jamie Hauser and free-ride specialist Tyler Higham to be the two going for the overall title. Higham is no stranger to making the finals in boat contests and has graced the podium plenty of times, but his first pro win had yet to materialize prior to the ’23 season.
Hauser was even more of a surprise contender. “I think you’d have to look back to Darin Shapiro or Parks Bonifay in their first year on tour to find the last time that a rookie was in contention for the overall title,” observed announcer Danny Amir, better known as Dano the Mano, who has likely watched more wakeboard contest runs than anyone else on the planet.
While Higham and Hauser were pre-season longshots for the overall PWT title, it was certainly not due to their inability to compete or their lack of top tier tricks. The last 5 years have been dominated by Nic Rapa and Cory Teunissen for the top spots with the two trading wins back and forth. They each suffered injuries that kept them from competing in all 4 events and without strong placings in every PWT stop, one can kiss their chances of the overall title goodbye. Both Rapa and Teunissen are no strangers to putting in the work necessary to win and stay at the top, but also proved that they can come back from injuries with a strong mindset.
“Seeing how Nic couldn’t even jump the wake in the first stop of the year to watch him come back and win by the end was really impressive,” shared Amir. “Shota Tezuka making the finals and placing 3rd in the event and 3rd overall was really cool, he has been doing this for a long time and can still throw down.”
Read Next: Pro Spotlight – Tyler Higham
An overall title can change the course of a rider’s career. It is something that can be leveraged to prove one’s consistency in a competitive environment. This year’s winner however proved a lot more. Higham is not just the guy that can land contest tricks over and over in any condition, he is what all riders hope to be; the rider who does not sacrifice style for consistency but has built a bag of tricks so deep that he can hang with the most technical riders in the world.

Teenager Miles Russell makes Korn Ferry Tour history in first pro start with top-20 showing
Fifteen-year-old Miles Russell made a hard push up the leaderboard at the Korn Ferry Tour’s LECOM Suncoast Classic, rising to as high as tied for third place.
Russell shot a final-round 66 and was 14-under-par for the week at the event at Lakewood National in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. After a bogey on 18 he was tied for 15th as he walked off the course. He finished in a 10-way tie for 20th place.

Russell, who is 15 years, five months and 19 days old, became the youngest player to make the cut in a Korn Ferry Tour event after shooting first- and second-round scores of 68 and 66, including a front-nine 31 on Thursday.
The left-handed Russell followed that up with a 70 on Saturday, well within his stated goal of a top 25 in his first professional start (he’s playing on a sponsor exemption). He did far better than that, grabbing an early birdie on the par-4 4th, then going birdie-birdie-bogey-birdie-birdie-par-birdie-birdie over the next eight holes. That’s 6 birdies, one par and one bogey against two par 3s, three par 4s and three par 5s.

With a top-25 finish, Russell is automatically eligible for next week’s Veritex Bank Championship in Arlington, Texas.
Russell and Guan Tian Liang are the only players younger than 16 to make a cut in a PGA Tour or Korn Ferry Tour event. Russell drew praise from Phil Mickelson on X , the latter giving a fellow left-handed golfer praise for “playing such incredible golf.”
He broke one of Tiger Woods’ records last year, becoming the youngest player to be named the AJGA Player of the Year. Russell, who is from Jacksonville Beach, Fla., is a high school freshman who has also won the Junior PGA and Junior Players Championship events. He shot a 66 at TPC Sawgrass in the latter. Russell said that he began playing golf at age 2 and broke par by age 6.
Russell told reporters Friday that he has a sponsor exemption into the PGA Tour’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship in November. In the meantime, he expects to continue to play AJGA events as well as elite amateur tournaments.

Nelly Korda Wins Fifth Consecutive Title at The Chevron Championship
Nelly korda cannonballs into lpga history with win at the chevron championship.
- chevron-championship
- Nelly Korda
- Tournament News
THE WOODLANDS, Texas — Nelly Korda collected her fifth straight LPGA Tour victory on Sunday at The Chevron Championship at The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas in dominant fashion, winning by two shots over Maja Stark.
Korda finished the last seven holes of her third round on Sunday morning, parring in to post a 3-under 69 and sit in a tie for second alongside Brooke Henderson, one shot back of 54-hole leader Haeran Ryu.
Starting her final round just a couple of hours later, Korda parred the first two holes while her groupmates faltered, picking up a pair of back-to-back birdies on holes three and four to lead by two shots over 2024 LPGA Tour rookie Jin Hee Im at 12-under. The 25-year-old grabbed another birdie on the par-5 8th hole to get to 13-under overall, parring the ninth hole to turn in 33 with a three-shot advantage.
Korda made another birdie on the par-4 10th hole to move to 14-under overall before making her first bogey of the round on 11 to drop back to 13-under, the first shot Korda had given back to the field since she bogeyed the 7th hole on Friday.
Meanwhile, Lauren Coughlin was charging up the leaderboard, making birdies on holes 10 and 11 ahead of Korda to get within two shots of the lead. But she gave Korda a little breathing room after making bogeys on 16 and 17, and with just a handful of holes to play, Korda held a four-shot lead.
But the 12-time LPGA Tour winner stumbled again with a bogey on the par-5 15th hole, and after Coughlin made a bounce-back birdie on the par-5 18th hole to post at 10-under total, Korda held a two-shot lead with three holes to play at The Club at Carlton Woods.
After parring the 16th hole, Korda nearly dunked her tee shot on the par-3 17th hole for an ace, ultimately two-putting for par to lead by two shots with just 18 standing between her and the Dinah Shore Trophy.
But Stark wasn’t going to go quietly. After sitting at 9-under and pretty much out of the conversation for majority of the back nine, the Swede birdied the 17th hole and nearly pitched in for eagle on the par-5 18th hole, tapping in for birdie to post at 11-under, now just one shot back of Korda with one hole to play.
Korda wasn’t fazed though, piping her drive down the middle of the fairway and then putting her second shot on the back fringe, sitting within 30 feet of the hole for eagle. She ran her eagle try by just a couple of feet, handily making the nervy come backer for birdie to win her second major title and first since the 2021 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship with a four-day total of 13-under.
“It's just been a crazy, crazy, crazy couple of weeks, with some really solid golf. I can finally breathe,” said a shivering Korda in her winning press conference, still damp from her leap into the lake by 18. “I was really nervous on that back nine. I really, really wanted this win. It feels amazing to get it.
“My first-ever major, competing in a major, was at the U.S. Women's Open at Sebonack, and that was when I dreamt of winning major championships. To have two under my belt now is a dream come true.”
With her 13th career victory, Korda is now the 31st different American to earn 13 or more wins on the LPGA Tour and is the 52nd player ever to win two or more major titles, becoming the ninth player in LPGA Tour history to win at least both the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and The Chevron Championship.
She joins Nancy Lopez and Annika Sorenstam as the only other player since 1978 to win five consecutive titles and will have a chance to top that pair next week as Korda is currently scheduled to play in the JM Eagle LA Championship presented by Plastpro.
But that’s a tomorrow Nelly concern. For now, she’s just going to soak in this moment, one for which she’s waited quite some time, and finally take a deep breath as her history is finally made.
“I'm going to enjoy this right now, and then I'll think about that,” smiled Korda. “It's been an amazing time. Hopefully, I’ll keep the streak alive. But I've been so grateful to compete week in and week out and get the five in a row.”

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations
By Claudia Looi 2 Comments
Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.
Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.
Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.
The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean
To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow. Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.
The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:
1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.
2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.
10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.

An excellent read! Thanks for much for sharing the Russian metro system with us. We're heading to Moscow in April and exploring the metro stations were on our list and after reading your post, I'm even more excited to go visit them. Thanks again 🙂

Garbiñe Muguruza, Two-Time Grand Slam Champion, Retires from Professional Tennis
- Author: Tim Capurso
Two-time Grand Slam champion and former WTA world No. 1 Garbine Muguruza announced her retirement from professional tennis at a press conference in Madrid on Saturday.
"I wanted to tell you that the time has come to say goodbye. It has been a long, beautiful career, full of moments and anecdotes, I could tell a thousand. I feel that the time has come to retire, to open a new chapter of my life, a new era," Muguruza said.
Muguruza, 30, last played in the WTA in January 2023 before announcing that she was taking a leave of absence from the sport to spend more time with friends and family last April.
The Venezuelan native played 10 seasons in professional tennis, winning the 2016 French Open and 2017 Wimbledon titles while spending four weeks as the world No. 1 back in '17. She is the only player in the history of women's tennis to defeat both Serena and Venus Williams in Grand Slam finals.
Muguruza retires with 10 WTA singles titles and $24,813,379 in career prize money.
