Band 7 Success

What Place Do You Most Like To Visit? IELTS Speaking (20 Example Answers)

If your examiner asks you about traveling in part one of your IELTS Speaking test, they might ask, “What place do you most like to visit?”

Let’s look at how you can answer this question for a good band-seven score. Below, you can also read 20 great model answers to this question ( go straight to the answers here ).

What To Say About Your Favorite Destination

For this kind of question, quickly think of one place you like to visit.

Note: when we say ‘visit’ in English, we usually mean a traveling destination.   This might be:

  •   A vacation destination
  •   A destination for business
  •   A foreign country
  •   A place in a foreign country
  •   Another city in your country
  •  Somewhere you liked to visit when younger
  •   Any other place that comes to your mind

But this question could also be about visiting a local place in your city or country, such as:

  • The library
  • A shopping mall
  • Your girlfriend’s house
  • Anywhere else you like to visit

Just say the first place that comes to your mind. Then you should add one or two more sentences. You could talk about:

  •   Why you like it
  •   How often you go there
  •  What you do there
  •  How you feel there
  •  Who you go there with
  •   How many times you’ve been there before or recently
  •   What you did there last time you went
  •   Any good memories from that place
  •   If you plan to go there again soon
  •   Anything else you can think of

Possible Reasons You Like That Place

Maybe you like it because:

  •   You have good memories there
  •   You love the weather there
  •   You love the food there
  •   You have family there
  •   You’ve had a lot of fun there
  •   Good shopping
  •  Fascinating  sights to see
  •   History and culture
  •   Nightlife
  •   Beautiful nature (beaches, mountains, forests…)
  •   Interesting activities
  •   Whatever else comes into your mind

Tip: Picture the Place in Your Mind

The easiest way to quickly think of something to say about a place (or an experience) is to picture it in your mind.

Just imagine the place the last time you went there.   Then describe what you’re seeing.

This ‘picturing’ is a very good habit for IELTS because it helps you to focus on ideas and what to talk about, instead of worrying about vocabulary and grammar.

Grammar Tip: Use Past Tense and Present Perfect

It’s always great to use the present perfect and past tense, just to show the examiner that you can.

This question about a ‘place’ allows you to easily think of:

  •   How many times you’ve been there before
  •   When you last went there
  •   What you did there before

Focus on Fluency

You don’t need to worry too much about grammar in part one. Remember that part one is mainly to warm you up .

You can’t really get a high score in part one. So save your clever vocabulary and grammar for part two, when you have more time to plan your answer.

In part one, just try to answer confidently and fluently .   This means speaking without hesitation.

It’s fine to use simple English to help you do this.

Also, don’t say too much. Use the three-step YES Method to answer your part-one questions. Just say:

  •   Y our answer (the place you like to visit)
  •   E xplain your answer (say why you like that place)
  •   S top talking (wait patiently for the next question)

Now, It’s Your Turn!

Don’t worry if the English in some of these answers seems quite advanced.

For a band-seven score, it’s okay if you make a few mistakes and don’t use super-advanced English, especially in part one.

Now give this question a go yourself.

Set up your voice recorder and ask aloud, “What place do you most like to visit?”

Focus on fluency , and use the three-step YES Method.

When you’ve finished, listen to your answer, and write down what you said.

If you notice any mistakes, try again.

Keep repeating this process and you’ll soon be ready for an excellent band-seven score in IELTS Speaking part one.

Everyone has a distinct favourite location. It is in keeping with their preferences and interests. Similarly, my favourite location reflects my interests, and I love being at my favourite place.

500 Words Essay On My Favourite Place

My grandmother's house in my village has often been one of my favourite places to be. Everyone has always held a special place in their hearts for their grandmother's home. We spent numerous summers with our granny when we were younger. Her home appeared to stand out from the rest in some way that made it special.

Enjoyment time

I enjoy playing outside while picking fresh fruits from the trees and eating freshly prepared vegetables. Frequently, I help my grandmother sow seeds in the garden. There are several reasons why I value this place so highly. There is something incredibly unique about the house. I feel at ease and relaxed here.

Why I Love My Grandmother’s House

First of all, the atmosphere at my grandmother’s house is distinctly different. I am at peace here. There is no noise or pollution because it is in a village. Additionally, there are no traffic jams here. I always wake early so that I can go for a walk and take in some fresh air. My body and mind are both revitalised by the fresh air. My grandmother makes me a delicious breakfast. In the evening, my whole family gathers to share our life stories as our grandfather makes tea.

My grandparents' home also has a small garden with grass that is a vibrant green colour. In the garden, there are swings as well. There, we also like playing entertaining games with our relatives, including water fights. We frequently spend the evenings sitting on the roof, looking up at the stars.

Holidays At Grandmother’s House

Over the holidays, there is always a lot of laughing and playing games at grandma’s house. Uncle's loud, recognisable giggle may be heard for miles. My aunt never misses an opportunity to comment on his laughter. The living room of our grandmother's home is where she regularly can be seen sitting and gazing out the window, close to the front entrance. She sits at this location to read the newspaper daily and sip on her old-fashioned steaming black coffee.

She can lose hours watching the birds fly to the feeder next to the window in her living room. Most birds have names that our grandmother is familiar with and recognises. She never skips a chance to observe the squirrels. Everything blossoms, and there are fresh flowers everywhere throughout the summer. In our town, the natural beauty is at an all-time high, and it's impossible to keep your eyes off the stunning surroundings. A pond is located behind the house. My cousins and I go fishing in the pond.

The village's residents lead simple, healthy lives. People care for one another and are always available. They make a lot of effort to maintain the facility's cleanliness because they care about it. We always look forward to our summer vacation so we may visit Grandma and Grandpa. Anyone who has met them will attest to their humility. All of this adds up to why I love my grandparents house and why it is my favourite place.

Many questions will pop up, such as why "my favorite place in the world essay" or generally a "special place essay." This type of creative writing helps with the visualization process. It also helps the writers to express what they have witnessed. Giving words to experiences contributes to polished writing styles. So, as easy as it might sound, such as "where is your favorite place," essays are crucial for developing writing skills.

my favourite place to visit 10 lines

Here is a list of "my favorite place essay topics." You can take inspiration from these and create your essays.

  • My grandma's house
  • The resort that we visited last summers
  • New Jersey- My favorite place
  • The backyard of my old house
  • Our Farmhouse in Texas
  • Trip to Bali
  • Disney Land
  • My treehouse
  • My uncle's place

How To Start A Favorite Place Essay

You can begin by defining your favorite place. Though this might sound a bit difficult to many of you out there, it isn't. Imagine or visualize the place. Try to remember the elements and the aromas. The people who made it the place that you can never forget. Once you have jogged down the memory lane, start by giving the background and then diverge on the details.

Outline writing

An outline is the most crucial part of an essay. It leads the path for the writer and will save you from all the tumbles and wrong turns. Here is an example of the outline:

  • Introduction
  • Body Paragraphs
  • Paragraph 1
  • Paragraph 2
  • Paragraph 3

Tips concerning writing a favorite place essay introduction

An introduction is a paragraph that determines the success of your essay. Either you succeed in grabbing your reader's attention or lose it entirely for several reasons. Always start your essay with an attention-capturing hook. Do not dive into the experience part. Stick to a hook and the background of the place. The ending line of the introduction paragraph will pave the way for the first body paragraph. Try to check some "my favorite place essay examples" to get a gist of how introductions are written.

When it comes to body paragraphs, please keep all of them of equal length. An essay of 3 to 5 paragraphs other than the introduction and conclusion is ideal. Try to use transition words to skip redundancies and to maintain flow. A body paragraph of 100-150 words, in this case, is enough.

Conclusions are like showstoppers. They are not meant to dull, neither do they deserve the "get it done with" approach. You have to finish strong. Keep it general. It is supposed to be a pal of your introduction paragraph. However, this friend does the opposite. Yes, it is the one who makes excuses and leaves. Do not summarize the entire essay. Just emphasize the points that were the main highlights of your paragraphs.

Hey! Do not make the mistake of turning your work in just yet. Consider making sure that your work goes through all of these processes mentioned below before the final submission:

Essay Revision

Now that your college essay about favorite place is written go back to the start and revise your content where it is required. Here you will be checking your essay for the correctness of focus and whether the audience's needs are adequately met. Other than this, review the way of organization. Does your essay have enough paragraphs to separate every new idea from one another? Does each paragraph make sense with the one to follow? The transitions have to be smooth as well to nail this literary piece. It is quite often for students to lose focus halfway through their essays, and they keep circling the main idea but fail to execute what is precisely asked of them. Recheck for these relevancy issues in your essay about place.

Essay Proofreading

This activity demands the author to go through the "describe your favorite place essay" to identify any possible mistakes that you might have failed to correct in the first attempt. These are usually surface errors like spelling mistakes, typos, grammatical errors. Also, check for punctuation and other formatting issues.

Make Citations

This is one step that many students dread as it can get boring at times. Depending on the format of your essay, you might have to quote the references that you used throughout your "one of my favorite places" essay. These will be placed at the very end. It will ensure the credibility of your work and give it a more professional look. If mentioned in the instructions, skipping this step can lead to a reduction in your overall grade.

Topic: My Grandma's House

Whenever I jog down memory lane, my grandma's house is the one that I happen to miss a lot. It is one of my favorite places from childhood. Located on the outskirts of the city, it was the most peaceful summer spot for us. Just like my grandma's charismatic personality, this house, too, was very special. There was always something about it that set it apart from all of the places that I have been to.

The summers called for an extended stay at Grandma's. It was a family gathering spot for all of us. Whether it was birthdays, graduations, or simple barbeques, Grandma's it was! The entire house was filled with laughter. The sweet aroma of apple pie lurked around the rooms. Aunt Beth always made her famous chicken wings. Uncle Murphy's chilled mint margaritas washed down this dish. However, it was never an evening until we dug into our grandma's signature apple pie.

Our grandma has dedicated a kid's sleepover room. In this way, all of the cousins stayed in one room. She also brought midnight treats. The fun did not end yet. Her bedtime stories were the most awaited part of every single day. We used to form a tent using all of the blankets. She would then cuddle with us and narrate the most intriguing stories. It was a whole experience. The story was not always goody-goody. She took us on an emotional roller coaster. There were a lot of hidden lessons and morals in it.

The house has a huge backyard. Our grandma used to grow all sorts of herbs and veggies. "The real food," she called it. Unlike others, she used to enjoy the food supply that came out of her garden. We used to love her version of the famous "ratatouille." She used to add a little meat and sprinkled it with parmesan cheese. It was an otherworldly dish. The titbits never went to waste. She was a food magician, and that enabled her to make new dishes out of leftovers.

The front porch was her favorite spot. We used to sit there for hours. Our discussions spiraled into different topics. She never missed an opportunity to feed a bird or a squirrel. The entire neighborhood respected her for her charm and kindness. She was indeed the ace of our hearts. Her place was welcoming to all. No one in our family would ever trade it for a weekend on a hill station.

There are countless memories of my grandma's house. Whenever our family gathers around, we always talk about the occasions and the incidents that happened. Though she is not here today, her house still stands to be the best place for us. It is the same summer spot that we will never turn down since it is our favorite place.

My 15 Favorite Travel Experiences Everyone Should Try Once

my favourite place to visit 10 lines

  • Bucket List Trips
  • Types of Travel

Travel opens you up to so many incredible experiences, and while there’s a whole lot more of the world I’d still like to see, and this is certainly not the definitive list of best travel experiences, I’d like to share with you some of my most amazing experiences and those I think deserve a spot on every traveler’s bucket list.

Sunset out on the waters at Mequifi Beach.

1. Watch The Sunrise In A Really Special Place

One of my most memorable sunrises was on Mequfi Beach at the end of a trip through the Quirimbas Archipelago in the Indian Ocean off the north-eastern coast of Mozambique. My husband and I had traveled the 68 miles of the archipelago by plane, sailboat, traditional dhow (wooden boat), and helicopter. We’d spent 2 weeks on the journey and Diamonds Mequfi Beach Resort was the final stop on our itinerary. Keen to savor our last few hours of beach time before flying home, we were up early and down on the beach just as the sun’s first rays of light started to peek over the horizon.

Author, friends and family white water rafting in intense waters.

2. Do Something That Terrifies You

After it takes a 360-foot tumble over Victoria Falls , the Zambezi River squeezes through a narrow gorge where it boils up into the biggest, and arguably best, white water rapids in the world. This is not for the faint-hearted, and an average level of fitness is required, but if you are feeling brave this really can be an adventure of a lifetime. I have done this trip numerous times and it’s definitely something I would recommend.

Pro Tip: The best time to raft the Zambezi is when the water levels are lower and more rapids are accessible, from August to mid-October. Go with a good operator like Bundu Adventures .

3. Laugh When You Get Caught In A Well-Known Tourist Scam!

Rome is an expensive city. Even a double room in a moderately priced hotel can be pricy. Traveling to Rome as a family with small children, we found the best value accommodation was one of the many convents that take in paying guests. Traveling on a budget and trying to economize wherever we could, we caught the train from the airport into the city. With our luggage and two small children in tow (one in a pushchair), we made the classic rookie mistake – we asked a local taxi driver how much he would charge to drive us to the convent. He named an exorbitant price. Some haggling ensued. Beating him down to a price that wasn’t quite so eye-watering, we climbed into the taxi. He drove for minutes, and around the corner pulled up outside our destination! An expensive lesson learned. All we could do was laugh!

Group of hikers ascend the summit at Mount Kilimanjaro.

4. Climb A Mountain

Climbing mountains is something I have been doing for years. I’ve climbed them, guided them, and taken my husband and my children up them. I’ve also taken clients on trips they tell me have been life-changing experiences.

If you are looking for an achievable, yet challenging, mountain to climb, let me steer you towards Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro , where I have been guiding regularly for years. Whether you’ll rate a climb up Africa’s highest mountain a great “travel experience” depends entirely on when you’re asked! Ask a climber making the final push to the summit and they’ll probably say no! At that moment it’s a tough, cold, nauseating, exhausting hell. But ask them 6 hours later, when they’re grinning from ear to ear, standing on the roof of Africa, and their answer will definitely be different.

5. Fly First Class

I’d love to say I have flown in first class, but that wouldn’t quite be true! Years ago, traveling from South Africa to Australia , I got as close to flying first class as I am probably ever going to get. Our travel agent made a mistake with our booking. When the plane touched down in Perth en route to Sydney , my husband and I got off with all the other passengers for a short layover before reboarding. We were surprised to see our boarding passes had us in new seats. In first class! We said nothing, grabbed a glass of champagne from the hostess, and sat down. The hostess, surprised to see us, asked to see our boarding passes. And that’s when the mistake was noticed. We were on the wrong plane; our travel agent had accidentally booked us on a later flight to Sydney! We were allowed to finish our champagne , and then quickly ushered to a pair of empty seats back in economy. Our time in first class was lovely while it lasted!

Nepal flags blow in the wind with mountain scape in the background.

6. Take An Epic Road Trip, On A Road Less Traveled

The 800-mile, 8-day drive from Kathmandu in Nepal to Lhasa in Tibet , along the China-Nepal Friendship Highway is a seriously memorable road trip. It takes you past the highest peaks of the Himalayas, pristine alpine lakes, incredible Buddhist monasteries, and surreal landscapes.

Pro Tip: The China-Nepal Friendship Highway closed after the 2015 Nepal earthquake, and is now only open for goods transport. The route currently being used is along the Pasang Lhamu Highway, a rough route only advised for very intrepid travelers.

Author, Sarah, gives speech at the Malabar River Festival.

7. Spend Time With The Locals

I traveled with Indian friends to Kodenchery in southern India , where they were taking part in a white water kayaking competition. Not knowing the front end of a kayak from the back, I wasn’t actually taking part in the competition but was somehow persuaded to take on the role of commentator. Kodenchery is not on even the most adventurous traveler’s paths, and I was quite a novelty standing on the river bank, microphone in hand, doing my best to describe the action taking place in the river below. I learned a handful of useful phrases from friendly locals and when I was at a total loss for words, one of the local teachers stepped in as my translator. I somehow made it into the local newspaper and onto the local TV news! I’ve never forgotten my weekend of celebrity in the backwaters of south India.

Green tent in the Bale Mountains of Ethiopia.

8. Sleep In A Tent

I’ve slept in many tents in my time, and have many fond memories. My husband, on the other hand, is not a keen camper, only sleeping in a tent when absolutely necessary. Of all the tent experiences I have subjected him to, he tells me the most memorable is waking up one morning in a tiny, ice-covered tent in Ethiopia ’s remote Bale Mountains on a trek through to find the endangered Ethiopian wolf.

Passengers get ready to board boat for overnight stay.

9. Sleep On A Boat

My husband and I were traveling to Tanzania ’s Mahale Mountains National Park, on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, to trek with chimpanzees. Most tourists coming to Mahale fly in by charter flight. We decided to travel by boat up the lake from Zambia , spending 3 nights on the MV Liemba , a WWI German gunboat that was converted into a passenger and cargo ferry. We’d managed to secure a “first-class cabin,” which consisted of a rickety bunk bed, a plastic garden chair, and a broken fan — I wouldn’t recommend the trip to any other than the most stoic of travelers. Most of the passengers didn’t have cabins, instead sleeping on the deck. The shared bathroom facilities left a lot to be desired – my husband caught typhoid on the journey home!

You might not want to choose this boat, but find a boat that suits you, and spend a few nights aboard.

10. Eat Street Food

Street food comes in all shapes, sizes, colors, and flavors. My “sweetest” street food memory is piping hot, fresh jalebis in India. It was a chilly early morning and I was walking, with a friend, through the narrow back streets of a tiny town in the Indian Himalayas, when we came across a guy deep frying these delicious sweets at a makeshift stall on the side of the road. Jalebis are a distant cousin to the donut, with a flour batter, deep fried in circular shapes, and soaked in sugar syrup or honey – they are delicious.

Iconic Sydney Harbor Bridge on a grey day with green trees and city line.

11. Visit An Iconic Site And Appreciate Seeing It In Person

The Eiffel Tower , the leaning tower of Pisa , the Grand Canyon – there are so many iconic sites around the world that deserve a place on your travel list. For me, it’s the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Growing up in Sydney, I never appreciated “the bridge” and must have crossed it a thousand times in my youth, never giving it a second thought. What makes you appreciate it though is climbing to the top! Dressed in a camouflage climbing suit, you, and your trembling knees, climb 1,332 steps to reach the top (burning 504 calories on the way!). At the top, you are rewarded with astounding views over the city. The view is particularly magical at dawn, watching the bustling metropolis come to life far below.

Pro Tip: book your climb with Bridge Climb Sydney the climb will cost you around $128.

12. Sip Cocktails In A Rooftop Bar With A View

There are a million places around the world to sip a cocktail from a rooftop bar with a view. My special place is the chic rooftop bar at Upendo House , in Stone Town, Zanzibar. It overlooks the azure ocean and the historic House of Wonders (built by the second Sultan of Zanzibar in 1883 with a door so wide he could enter the house riding on the back of an elephant!).

13. Swim In Infinity Pool With A View

Everyone loves an infinity pool . My most memorable is the pool at Africa Bush Camps, Bumi Hills , Zimbabwe, which hovers on the edge of a cliff, looking out over the vast and shimmering waters of Lake Kariba, the world’s largest man-made lake, below.

14. Visit Somewhere With A History So Deep You Will Never Truly Understand It

Lalibela in northern Ethiopia is a place where I’ve stood in awe at the history around me. Known for its distinctive subterranean churches, many of which are joined by tunnels carved out of rock during the 12th and 13th centuries, Lalibela is still a pilgrimage site for Coptic Christians today.

15. Take Local Transport

My first encounter with public transport in India was taking a sleeper train from Delhi to Dehradun (the gateway to India’s famous hill stations). I was alone and had never been on an overnight train before, let alone one in a different country. I boarded the train just before midnight. Within minutes, my fellow passengers had taken me under their collective wings, finding my berth, teaching me how to fold down my bunk bed, and introducing me to their families. As the train pulled out of the station, in unison they opened their picnic containers full of home-cooked food and offered me all kinds of delicious treats. I’ve never felt so instantly and completely accepted by a bunch of total strangers.

My All-Time Favorite Places in the World

05/13/2018 by Kristin Addis 12 Comments

What’s the best place that you’ve ever traveled to?

It’s the question that almost every traveler asks another. Where in the world is so amazing that you would call it your favorite?

I find this difficult to answer, as I’m sure you do when you get this question, because each place has its own special meaning and beauty. That said, there are some places that stick out much more than others for me. There are places where I left a piece of my heart, places that are unquestionably on the highlight reel of my life, and memories that I still hold dear, years later.

Which places and experiences, over the past nearly-six years of traveling, have stuck out the most? Though it was incredibly difficult to narrow down, these are my top 10:

Table of Contents

1. Wild Coast, South Africa

best places to travel to

Before, I would struggle to say which country I enjoyed traveling through the most. Now I usually say South Africa without hesitation. It’s not just because it was my first African country, which awakened a brand new love affair with my now-favorite continent, but because of the people and the variety of activities and climates.

When I road-tripped through South Africa in 2015, I was invited to stay with locals all the time, of all backgrounds. I was blown away by the natural beauty and friendliness, though one place stood out in particular – the Wild Coast. It’s where Nelson Mandela was born, and where the most beautiful part of the country is, IMHO. I could stay there forever just walking along the rural bluffs over the ocean while dogs from the backpackers come join for the walk.

2. Torres del Paine, Chile

best places to travel to

Torres del Paine was the final stop on a 2-month journey through Patagonia , where I did my first multi-day backpacking adventures requiring that I carry all of my own gear and food. I’d previously thought I wouldn’t be capable of doing that, and now I’m pretty much obsessed, having done it in Kyrgyzstan , Alaska , and Peru! I can thank my Patagonia experience for waking up that side of me.

I’ll always love Torres del Paine for the challenge, for showing me that I could do it, and for being so beautiful. It’s hard to think of a place with heavier winds, more glaciers, better mountains, or a bigger wealth of adventures.

3. Komodo National Park, Indonesia

best places to travel to

I’ll never forget surfacing in Komodo National Park  after a night dive on the Fourth of July, near the end of my first year of traveling solo. The Milky Way was in full view and my dive buddy and I had just spent the previous hour marveling at tiny little Mandarin fish with their bright orange and electric blue markings.

The previous week had been full of Manta rays, the most impressive corals I’d ever seen, and some of the best diving of my life. It still ranks high on my list of favorite experiences after all these years.

4. The Annapurna Circuit, Nepal

best places to travel to

Reaching the Thorong-La Pass, the Annapurna Circuit ‘s highest point at over 5400 meters on my 27th birthday, was an experience I’ll never forget. The trek took two weeks and was the longest I had ever attempted hiking, which had previously only been for 2 days in China’s Tiger Leaping Gorge.

I did it in running shoes and without a guide while everyone else seemed to be more prepared than I was with their hiking boots and topographical maps. Yet I managed to go for longer each day than I thought I’d be able to, and tacked on the 4-day Annapurna Sanctuary and Poon Hill treks too. After that experience, I truly felt like I could do anything I put my mind to.

5. The Ring Road and northern lights, Iceland

best places to travel to

My Iceland camper van road trip  was in a word: Magical. My friend Maksim and I impulsively bought cheap flights to Iceland for October without realizing how well we’d done with picking our time of year. We got fall foliage, super small crowds, better prices, and the northern lights three times during our trip!

The feeling of seeing the northern lights is indescribable. It seems like it just couldn’t be real, even though there you are, looking at it with your naked eyes. I’m still not over it three years later.

6. Tofo, Mozambique

best places to travel to

Of all the places I’ve traveled to in the world, Mozambique was the biggest question mark. I was supposed to travel there with someone I had been casually dating at the time, and when he pulled out last minute I was left with a choice: Go alone to a place I’d only read scary things about on the internet or cancel my trip. Daring to go made all the difference.

I met the coolest people of all my travels there, whom I’ve met up with again in Switzerland , Bangkok, South Africa, and Indonesia . Mozambique is also where I was when this blog really started to take off, and I’ll always cherish those days where everything seemed to go right and nothing went wrong. It was the place, yes, but it was so much circumstance, too. I think that’s why I can’t return, though I’d love to. Mozambique will always be a cherished memory.

7. Solo camping in Utah, USA

best places to travel to

Though I’ve always loved California and Hawaii , it wasn’t until roughly a year ago today that I really fell in love with my own country and came to value the beauty of it. Utah was the place where I realized I could free camp in some of the most stunning places on the planet, where I’d meet a motley crew of other camper vanners on the journey, and where I could be totally, truly alone in the desert.

I solo rappelled down a canyon wall , drove myself for over 1000 miles through four states in the American Southwest , and saw some of the most beautiful landscapes I’ve ever laid eyes on. America, despite all of your flaws, you are beautiful and I’m grateful to call you home.

8. The sunrise at Kawah Ijen, Indonesia

best places to travel to

I often refer to the moment this photo was taken when I talk about the ‘highlight reel of my life’ because I can still remember it so vividly. I’d had to work for this one. It was almost impossible to figure out how to visit Kawah Ijen volcano without a tour, but I was determined. It almost ended badly when after almost 48 sleepless hours on cargo ferries and buses, getting catcalled, and scammed right away , I’d started to develop a mild hatred for Java.

Then everything turned around when I hiked in with the stars, just me and one other figure 20 paces or so ahead of me, and the workers who carry sulfur up and down the volcano day and night with superhuman strength. I got up close to the bright blue flames , felt the heat while covering my face and eyes for dear life, then hiked to the top for the sunrise. That figure ahead of me ended up being a fellow solo traveler and though we only shared that moment in time I think of him often. Back then we were the only ones up there watching one of the most spectacular sunrises I’ve ever seen, though I understand it’s become more popular since then.

9. Black Rock City, Nevada

best places to travel to

Burning Man is the one place I rarely photograph or write about, despite going to the last five burns and now gearing up to attend my sixth. I keep going back because it’s a part of my life now and it’s hard to imagine not returning to this funky city each year. It’s where I have my most profound realizations and for me, it’s like pressing the reset button each year.

It’s almost impossible to describe, but it’s safe to say, it’s a festival that has changed my life.

10. Inca Trail, Peru

best places to travel to

Hiking the Inca Trail would have been a special experience in and of itself, but it’s of particular importance to me because it was the first tour I’d ever led , and even more importantly, a huge step forward for Be My Travel Muse. I’d always enjoyed spending time with readers but I never got to do so for more than a few hours at a meetup. This allowed me to have two full weeks!

Though it should have been scary to lead my first tour, I was just excited to finally share my passion with an amazing group of people. They blew me away with how fun, smart, and adventurous they were. I could gush all day about it. It’s an experience that meant so much to me, and I can’t wait to do more!

Out of all of these places, what I’ve come to realize is that even if a place is beautiful, famous, or both, it’s the people who make it memorable. Even though I travel alone, I can hardly begin to count all of the amazing souls who have come into my travel experience and enriched it simply by being there.

You never know who you’ll meet or what a place could mean. I never expected, prior to going, that these would be the memories that would stick out the most, but I am grateful for every single one.

What are your favorite places on planet Earth?

I like how you update your favorites as you experience more places. Also, it is personalized, what are the top 10 in your experience, versus what are the top 10, like there is a set answer for everyone. I look forward to seeing my fellow readers’ top ten lists! I can start, although my experiences are very limited (It is US heavy):

1. Mt. Haleakala, Hawaii: Hanging out in a recently active volcano is too cool. 2. Jerusalem, Israel: I also agree with Liz on the Negev desert too (and Eilat), but in terms of the whole package, this city is amazing in terms of beauty and history (and spirituality for me) 3. Scottish Hills (Scotland): Gorgeous, only had a glancing view of them, need to go back and actually fully experienced it! 4. Niagara Falls, NY and Canada: It had a charm when I last visited and the Falls are beautiful. But what makes it on my list is that it got me into traveling the U.S. and make a goal to see all 50 states (we drove as a family through rugged hills in PA and New York State and was enthralled). 5. Oregon Coast: It is really gorgeous and the people on coastal Oregon have a love for the environment that is contagious and clicks with me. 6. Toronto-Montreal, Canada: Have been to only a few areas in Canada, but the cities in Canada seem so clean and interesting to me. Haven’t been to Montreal actually (liked Toronto) but it is on my list of must sees. 7. Minnesota, USA: Friendliest people I have experienced and a great way to start my first real solo trip. Needed to find a store and asked directions in the mall. The person instead took a work break and drove us there! That is how friendly they are there in a nutshell. Plus Minneapolis has cool sky walks that go for miles and you can enjoy the city even in January in comfort and the food choices are many. St. Paul has a bit of history and the capital building is gorgeous. Then there is the black sand beach in the far northeast along Lake Superior with little islets you can cross over to and hang out. 8. Santa Monica or San Diego, CA: Like the character of Santa Monica, and the beach is nice in terms of lots of sand and the hills, although in terms of pure scenery the Sunset Cliffs near San Diego and the beach at La Jolla (or anywhere, I like how in the West, the beach is more than just getting a tan or bathing, it is a place to hang out and do whatever). 9. San Francisco, CA: Lots to see, great arts, culture, vegetarian wonderland, great parks, Golden Gate Bridge (gorgeous strait to the Pacific!), the Pier, etc. Just be prepared for cool weather in July! As a lover a weather I enjoyed the “foggy” side and “sunny” side of the city. 10. Appalachian Trail, Eastern USA: Lots of things to see along this amazing trail. I guess my favorite was in West Virginia such as “Cranberry Glades” and the New River with its many great whitewater areas. Honorable mention: Key West, and the 7 mile bridge.

I’d really like to see the Oregon coast! I love Santa Monica as well.

Oregon coast is absolutely stunning. I recall being near Canon Beach and then Astoria and thinking “holy moly — WHERE AM I?” The photos turned out great, too 😉

Even picking ten is hard! In no particular order: 1. Antarctica 2. Uganda 3. Ushuaia, Argentina – the southernmost city in the world! 4. Stone Town, Zanzibar – and the beaches too! The Rock restaurant is literally a restaurant on a rock in the middle of the ocean. Awesome! I hear they have an underwater hotel now, too. 5. Livinstone, Zambia – looking over the edge of Victoria Falls was incredible! 6. Serengeti National Park, Tanzania – tent camping safari was the best. 7. Saint Petersburg, Russia 8. Anywhere in the western United States, especially Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah 9. Asheville, NC 10. Seattle, WA

I realllllly want to see Antarctica. You naming it #1 definitely reinforces that!

Great list Kristin!! Amazing places but mostly, lots of determination to archive solo travel! I like how you relate these places to your personal experience or personal moments. My favorite would be the sunrise on the Kawah Ijen, Indonesia, I’m a big fan of celestial bodies photos.

I’m looking forward to the next list.

I really like your site, I’m inspired. I’d been thinking of using my savings to try to ‘settle down’ in the city (west LA) but now my gut is telling me to travel. Thanks, Kristin!

My Favourite Place Essay 1: 100 Words

My favourite place is a cozy beachside cafe where time slows down, and relaxation takes center stage. The moment I step onto the sandy shore, a soothing sense of calm engulfs me. The rhythmic sound of the crashing waves, the salty ocean breeze, and seagulls soaring overhead create a serene symphony that rejuvenates my weary soul. As I sit on a wooden deck chair, sipping my favorite coffee, I watch as the sun bids adieu, offering a breathtaking view of the horizon painted in hues of orange and pink. This sanctuary allows me to reflect, unplug, and simply be present in the moment – a haven where my worries melt away and my spirit finds solace.

My Favourite Place Essay 2: 200 Words

Set amidst rolling hills and majestic mountains, my favourite place is an enchanting valley that leaves me spellbound. As I venture deep into the valley, the crisp, fresh air fills my lungs, rejuvenating both my body and mind. The panoramic vistas of cascading waterfalls, meandering rivers, and gentle meadows covered in wildflowers unfold before me like a masterpiece created by Mother Nature herself.

The solitude and peace I find here are unparalleled, allowing me to delve into introspection and reconnect with my inner self. The valley’s rich biodiversity provides a haven for various wildlife species, and occasionally, I am lucky enough to spot a deer trotting gracefully or hear the distant echo of a bird’s song.

At the heart of this ethereal valley lies a sparkling turquoise lake, reflecting the surrounding mountains like a mirror. Its calm and serenity are simply awe-inspiring, leaving me in awe of nature’s unmatched beauty. Sitting by the lake’s edge, I watch as the sun paints the sky in a breathtaking palette of hues during sunset, bidding farewell to another day.

My Favourite Place Essay 3: 250 Words

My favourite place is my childhood home, a charming house nestled in a quaint little village. Surrounded by lush green fields and with a view of the sea in the distance, it exudes warmth and nostalgia. Every corner of the house holds cherished memories, from family gatherings in the cozy living room to lazy afternoons spent playing in the sprawling backyard.

Entering through the handcrafted wooden door, I am greeted by the scent of freshly baked cookies, a testament to my mother’s love and nurturing. The aroma wafts through the air, instantly transporting me back to my carefree childhood days. The creaky staircase, worn with time, echoes the laughter and footsteps of bygone times.

As I walk into my old room, memories unfold before my eyes. The walls adorned with my colorful artwork, the shelves lined with beloved storybooks, and the familiar view of a tree outside my window – all bring a sense of comfort and familiarity. The room is a sanctuary where my dreams were nourished, my creativity flourished, and self-discovery was nurtured.

The lush garden that surrounds my childhood home is a testament to my father’s green thumb. The vibrant blooms that carpet the landscape, the melodious chirping of birds among the trees, and the gentle rustling of leaves in the breeze all create an orchestra of natural serenity. This oasis is where I spent countless hours exploring, reading, and finding solace in the midst of nature’s embrace.

My Favourite Place Essay 4: 500 Words

Nestled in the heart of a bustling city, my favourite place serves as an escape from the chaos that surrounds it. The local botanical garden offers a haven of lush greenery and colorful blossoms that instantly lighten my mood. As I stroll along the winding pathways, my senses are greeted by the intoxicating scents of nature, while the melodious chirping of birds provides a symphony in the background. The garden offers various nooks to unwind, from secluded benches under the shade of towering trees to charming gazebos adorned with climbing vines.

With each visit, my eyes are delighted by the vibrant blooms – an ever-changing canvas of nature’s beauty. In this place, time seems to stand still, allowing me to appreciate the simple wonders of life. It is here where my worries dissipate, and my mind finds clarity. This sanctuary is not only an escape; it is a reminder to slow down and appreciate the world’s natural splendor.

The botanical garden is not just a visual feast; it is also a hub of activity for various forms of wildlife. Butterflies flutter gracefully from flower to flower, their delicate wings adding a touch of elegance to the surroundings. Bees buzz busily, going about their pollination duties, contributing to the garden’s continuous cycle of growth and renewal. The presence of these creatures reminds me of the interconnectedness of all living beings and the importance of preserving and nurturing our natural environment.

As I continue my exploration, I am captivated by the diverse ecosystems within the garden. A pond teeming with lily pads and koi fish offers a tranquil oasis, while a miniature waterfall provides a soothing soundtrack to my thoughts. The presence of water adds a soothing ambiance to the already calming atmosphere of the garden, and I find myself drawn to its refreshing embrace.

In this haven of serenity, I am able to disconnect from the demands of daily life and reconnect with myself. Whether I am enjoying a quiet moment of solitude or sharing the beauty with loved ones, the botanical garden offers a space to reflect, rejuvenate, and find inspiration. I often bring a book or a sketchpad, finding a peaceful spot to indulge in my favorite pastimes while surrounded by nature’s wonders.

During different seasons, the garden undergoes a metamorphosis, showcasing the cyclical nature of growth and change. In spring, cherry blossoms paint the landscape in delicate shades of pink, while in summer, roses bloom in vibrant hues, filling the air with their intoxicating fragrance. Autumn brings a tapestry of fiery orange and red leaves, and in winter, a sprinkle of frost adds a magical touch to the dormant plants.

Leaving the garden, I am revitalized and ready to face the bustling city once again. The experience has reminded me of the importance of finding balance in life, of taking the time to appreciate and nurture the natural world around us. The botanical garden serves as a constant source of solace and inspiration, and I am grateful for its existence amidst the chaos of the city.
