My trip representative, David, was a patient, positive, helpful person. He help solve my travel issues and sent my the revised travel documents. Although he was from India he spoke clearly and slowly and made sure I understood the situation. David is a asset to the company!

My experience & recommendations

My experience with this company has been average overall. While they provide the service they advertise, it often feels like there's room for improvement in their customer support and efficiency. I encountered some delays and difficulties in resolving issues, which was a bit frustrating. However, if you're looking for a quick solution, they do get the job done eventually. That said, I would recommend considering alternatives. In my search, I found another company whose service and support exceeded my expectations. For a smoother experience, I suggest reaching out to them at +1 866-228-5027.

I can't believe this is legal operation…

I can't believe this is legal operation these guys are running. They made an 'error' on their website booking site, which lead me to book a flight not suitable my needs. The customer support has lead to no reasonable solution and no responsibility taken. I see the other low scores and bad experiences travellers have had and what these third party companies get away with. This is not a service to travellers, always go direct with airlines!

Hello, As you have failed to provide us with a valid booking code in the private section of the review, we are unable to locate your booking in our system and see what truly happened. Best regards, mytrip team

The actual trip booking part is like…

The actual trip booking part is like every other trip booking platform. I STRONGLY SUGGEST that you DO NOT purchase travel visa through them. They charge a very high premium and usually when a you pay for travel visa (in my past experiences) all you do is take a photo of your passport and a selfish and they agent takes care of the rest, in this case however you are sent a link to SimpleVisa website and you're left to do everything on your own. They basically copy the visa off the country's site and have you do it all yourself. I could have done that on my own for 300% less money. Buy the tickets get your own visas and don't pay them more money for no reason

Paid for 20kg hold luggage on first flight but unable to pay for it on the second flight ((both flights booked through mytrip). Called my trip to cancel the hold luggage on first flight because I can't continue journey, they refused to cancel the additional luggage for the first flight!

Hello, We would like to inform you that any cancellation for the additional products purchased can only be processed according to the rules of the airline company. As an agency, we act as an intermediary; we are bound by the airline's rules, and we cannot override them. Best regards, Mytrip team

I requested to please change my ticket according my desire, they replied Thank you for waiting. Upon checking, I will have to forward your request to our internal support team as your request cannot be handled via chat. Very concerned with this company dealing , I had to cancel a passenger from my trip due to medical emergency and understood some costs will arise, however after I agreed the price they called me and changed the cost. They did this three times and changed price three times and blame airline. I asked to escalate the issue and speak to manager they refused and the caller Anushka disconnected the call

Always top notch services

Everytime I have used their services, I have never been disappointed. Always recommend!!

Awful experience! Do not use.

Booked through MyTrip thinking we would save money. The airline changed one our flights by over 24 hours meaning that we would need to change our flights so I requested a refund. Was an absolute nightmare to get back as you can't request straight from the airline due to booking through MyTrip and initially I was told my MyTrip that they couldn't request me a refund. Fast forward 2 months and many phone calls later I received my refund which was under half of what I expected back to be told on the phone that they keep the £93 we paid for luggage, £70 were their cancellation fee's and £63 were the airline fee's. They would not put it down in writing officially by email so who knows where all that money went but it's been an awful experience and I would never book with them again.

Terrible experience - do not recommend

I strongly suggest you DO NOT use this company. A terrible experience. I purchased flights and extra services including baggage. The airline site showed no baggage had been allocated. I have called the help line 4 times to request a refund, as I did not receive the service. Yesterday I spent 1 hour 3 mins on the call and was passed to 3 different teams, none of which could confirm my refund.

Date of experience : April 06, 2024

Money out of pocket and no service delivered, rude support closing chat on me.

Paid 103 EUR for a premium seat, 72h later was told there was an issue, they refunded only part of the cost and told me I should book the seat with the airline, but as then confirmed by their support agent, is not possible since the booking was through them and not the airline. Asked for a full refund since i could not check in online or book the seat in any way, was refused, they offered to rebook the seat but only after paying 103 EUR again while they still owe me money. At my observation i was only willing to pay what was refunded, the agent closed the conversation on me. Terrible service and terrible support.

clear picture of available options

From the moment I expressed what I was looking for, I received a clear list of all the available optionw with clear picture of each one. On the negative side, the time lost to reject the persistance of the so many costly "offers" of additional services

Not possible to get Airline itinerary - unresolved

I booked only recently and I regret it a little already. My flight is soon and I worry about this booking a lot. Never received a booking itinerary of mytrip.com after booking and airline is somehow restricted to email it to me. Emails from Airline blocked and impossible to get booking email confirmation from linked Airline that mytrip is linked to. Airline emailed me 8 times without success telling me only mytrip can fix. One hour or more on phone to mytrip without success and they tell me only Airline can fix email issue. No one can help properly at either customer support -airline nor my trip.com. Agreed on what others said. Luggage is 55 euro one bag with mytrip and maybe 30euro only over Airline. Same with the seat cost. They wanted nearly 30euro one way for one seat. I ignored that request as the flight total cost should have a free seat included. Wish I would have used another way of booking this flight, so far not a pleasant experience. I worry about my trip with mytrip and hope all will go smooth after all this experience..

What is myTrip.com?

Mytrip is an online travel agency owned and run by e-Travel S.A., which is based in Spain. In 2007, the corporation established its headquarters in Athens, Greece, from where it has operated since. Mytrip is a service that allows you to book flights, hotels, and rental vehicles all in one place.

According to the site, more than 1.3 million clients have expressed satisfaction with its services. It also boasts that it deals with low-cost airfares or hotel rates, among other things. But, is it all true? That we shall analyse in the specifics of this article

According to the website, by just specifying the origin, destination, and date, you may quickly find a flight to your desired destination. The results of the search will show you the best possibilities, and you will be able to filter them based on price, airline, and schedule. Travelers can also compare hotels with other websites such as Expedia, Hotels.com, and others.

Travelers can also compare hotels with other websites such as Expedia, Hotels.com, and others. Additionally, travellers can book a car and even an entire vacation in addition to flights and accommodations.

During the booking process, you will have access to information on web check-in, baggage, etc. Payments for flights and hotels can be made through the website using Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and PayPal, among other methods.

In order to view and print your reservation, you must first log into your account. You can also log in to make any necessary edits or modifications to the reservation. Contact the Mytrip customer service team for further information or if you have any questions about payment, refunds, cancellations, or anything else.

Is myTrip.com legit?

What we found:.

myTrip.com claims to be an IATA-accredited travel agency.

However, after further investigation, it appears that the number +44 8447747881 advertised by them is actually a front for a Greek corporation.

According to Sitejabber, with a consumer rating of 1.07 stars based on 700 reviews, it is clear that the vast majority of MyTrip consumers are generally disappointed with their transactions.

Customers who have expressed dissatisfaction with MyTrip most typically highlight customer service, travel agency, and credit card issues.

Let us further discuss the legitimacy of myTrip.com on the following grounds:

Customer Service

A great number of previous users of myTrip.com have complained about the customer service of the company. According to a significant number of users, the customer service is almost unreachable since the company does not respond to grievances either in mail or on calls. Most often, emails go ignored and calls are never responded to.

In fact, most users on Sitejabber have rated myTrip.com’s customer service (and service in general) with 1 star out of 5. This means there were less than even 1.2% positive reviews about the customer service. Thus, it would not be wrong to say that myTrip.com does not have a very responsive customer service, a crucial facet that is the backbone of most travel websites.

According to a victim of the apparent fraud committed by myTrip.com (on Sitejabber), the customer booked a flight with  British Airways which was later cancelled by the airline. The airline then advised the customer to contact myTrip.com, however as per the customer there is no viable way to contact the service.

The customer said, “They don’t have a customer service line as the number for their contact centre will never be answered”. They were also of the view that myTrip.com purposely set up not to answer customer help requests so that once you lose your money over their services, you are never getting it back.

Conclusively, the customer was greatly dissatisfied with the customer service and myTrip.com in general.

On February 9th, 2016, a user of myTrip.com made reservations with them for flights on Iberia Airlines (from Madrid to Lisbon) and Air Nostrum (from Malaga to Madrid). As soon as they booked their flights, Mytrip.com promptly debited their card (travel card).

On the second attempt, two weeks later, the user was unable to connect because of an airline change.

As soon as they learned of the situation, they contacted Mytrip.com and asked that the flights be switched to a more convenient connection.

Although they had sent Mytrip.com numerous emails and spent money calling their “helpline,” Iberian Airways said that Mytrip.com hadn’t requested any changes to the flights.

Because Mytrip.com did not request a change from Iberia Air, the airline says it cannot make any alterations to the scheduled flights.

Iberia Air insisted that they must take the first flight, which no longer existed, or else they will be unable to make it to Madrid in time for the second flight. To put it another way, the tickets the user purchased were not honoured.

No one at Mytrip.com responded to the user’s emails either.

The helpline’s 844 number appears to be a premium number, as the company receives payment from the cost of the call. The price of one phone call alone (on hold) was 50 Euros for the euros. This incident speaks volumes for the values that myTrip.com stands for.

Most common complaints about myTrip.com

They have no record of your booking travel..

Often, during our research, we came across a number of users who complained about how the airline or hotel they booked for using myTrip.com has no record of the user’s reservation. This happened because myTrip, com claimed to have booked the travel for the user in exchange for payment but the reservation was never really done.

One such instance is when a user who booked a flight ticket with myTrip.com reached the airport and was denied boarding because the ticket was not legitimate and the airline found no booking history related to the user on their system.

How to protect yourself: You can help protect yourself by checking out the organisations online before you do business with them.

To begin, only book with well-known, reputable organisations (typically found at the top of Google search results for travel), and even then, do a Google search for the company’s name plus the words “scam” and “review.”

RipOffReport.com and PissedCustomer.com are only two of the many forums where individuals discuss companies.  A company, such as myTrip.com, with several bad ratings should be approached with care. In addition, it is advisable to check out the Better Business Bureau and go with B+ or higher rated companies.

Ask your friends for recommendations of online travel agencies, but be sure to type in the URL they gave you correctly, as some scammers set up sites that look like real travel agencies but are one letter off in the URL. If the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. So don’t book with that company unless you have vetted them.

Using a credit card instead of a debit card will allow you to challenge charges more easily if the deal turns out to be a rip-off, according to Levin. Debit cards take money directly out of your account, but credit cards allow you to avoid paying for fraudulent charges.

They changed your travel date — and didn’t tell you.

One of the most recurring issues with myTrip.com is that the company changes your travel date without informing you and most often there is nothing that you can do about it. This means that for example, if a customer booked a trip package with the company and the flight was scheduled for Monday, but the flight was later rescheduled by the company or rescheduled due to the airline, the company would fail to inform the customer. This could lead to other elements of the trip getting fouled up as a result.

How to protect yourself: It is recommendable to check with the hotel, airline, or other third-party service provider to ensure that all reservations made through myTrip.com are accurate. Make sure your reservations are correct and ask the company to tell you if there are any adjustments. If you book using a credit card, you may be shielded from this issue because many credit cards provide travel insurance as a feature.

Conclusion – Is myTrip.com legit?

We recommend not booking with myTrip.com. Most often the cheaper fares on flights, hotel bookings, and the other services may look enticing, however, what comes off as cheaper initially may turn into a big headache later (as seen with most critical incidents with myTrip.com).

All in all, we would say myTrip.com came off as shady and not-so-legitious to us on many grounds and we would suggest you book with far better alternatives available online.

If you really wish to book with myTrip.com here are a few tips that can come in handy:

  • You should avoid booking with them unless you have extremely flexible travel arrangements, as it appears that they frequently change their itineraries and schedules.
  • If there is any possibility that you will need to cancel or change your flight, do not book with them at this time.
  • If you do decide to book with them, make sure to use a credit card that has both built-in trip insurance and the ability to deny a charge if the goods are not delivered as promised. This will provide you with some protection.

“So far so good happy with your service”

“Flight Fiasco: MyTrip's Last-Minute Ticket Cancellation Drama”

Absolutely dreadful experience with MyTrip. Booked my flights from Tel Aviv to NYC with them, only to find out last minute that they've canceled both my outbound and return tickets without any notification whatsoever. Dealing with their customer service for a refund has been a nightmare - they're unresponsive, unhelpful, and seem to have no interest in rectifying their mistake. Avoid at all costs!

I used mytrip to book a flight months in advance it turns out they had sent me the wrong information. I ended up missing my flight (as their was no booking under the information they gave me) and after talking with their customer service they told me they wouldn't do anything and to go buy a different flight. Honestly the worst 3rd party travel sight… DONT USE if I could give 0 stars I would

Absolute trash... rebooked tickets of cancelled flight on the summer. The tarif was lower that the original one, so to match The price paid we agreed on the phone to an upgrade, which allowed us to have a suitcase per person... nothing else. I paid a fee and this morning they called me to say it was a mistake, So no suitcase and refund possible. If i take a higher rate i had to pay extra but if lower they keep the money. Real thieves! Never again

Where can i complaint?? Where can i complaint??

Do not bother. They will not help you. They will keep tossing and taking you in circles. Each one comes with a different story.

Hopefully nothing wrong would happen if you don't miss your flight and make a check-in online, but beware of the company you buy in the future- the best is to do it over the airline website as a direct purchase. Cheers!

No, they are not. Hence, the awful reviews! The customer service is non-existant! If you email and have some urgent issues that need to be sorted, you will not get an immediate response. When they respond, they don't even check what you originally asked/requested them!

  • MyTrip doesn’t offer refunds or cancellations for some services that were paid with a credit card. So, if you paid for something and can’t use it, you won’t get your money back from MyTrip.
  • Moreover, customer service from MyTrip has been reported as slow and unhelpful . This is something that needs to be improved.

But, as a savvy traveler, you know that cheaper options sometimes come with hidden costs or risks of losing your hard-earned money.

So before you book your flights through them, let me uncover the truth: Is MyTrip legit and reliable or is it just another scam waiting to happen?

Let’s dive right in!

Is Mytrip Legit?

  • Should You Book Directly or Through Mytrip?

Mytrip is a legit online travel agency as it is owned by Etraveli Group, one of the largest flight-centric online travel agencies in Europe. However, booking through Mytrip carries a higher risk of issues than booking directly with the airline.

Mytrip

Though problems can occur even when you book a flight with an airline directly, the chances are much lower than booking through Mytrip.

Here’s why:

Mytrip basically works as an intermediary between you and the airline.

How Mytrip Works

When you book through Mytrip, they collect your payment and are responsible for your booking, not the airline you booked with since your contract is not directly with them, it is with Mytrip.

Therefore, the airline isn’t liable to help you directly if anything goes wrong.

In case something odd happens and you need any help, you’ll need to contact Mytrip first, who will then reach out to your respective airline on your behalf, and after that Mytrip will communicate the response to you.

How Does Mytrip Work

Due to the involvement of a third party, you’re most probably going to be stuck in a lot of back-and-forths between the airline and Mytrip.

And this makes the whole process of resolving your issues a bit more complicated and your issues take longer to resolve.

But what makes things even more complicated to resolve is the worst customer service of Mytrip .

And because of this, it can be a nightmare for you to resolve your problems when your flights are booked through them (Mytip).

Similarly, making changes to flights booked through Mytrip is a nightmare even if you have a Flexible Ticket .

For those who don’t know, Mytrip’s Flexible Ticket is an additional paid service in which they claim that you can change your flight tickets (changes to date and time only) no matter what the airline’s rules are.

Mytrip Flexible Ticket

But, that is not true.

Mytrip’s Flexible Tickets are not flexible at all.

First of all, it is hard to reach out to Mytrip’s customer support since its customer service is extremely poor.

And even if somehow you manage to get in touch with them, Mytrip still declines customers’ requests (in most cases) for making changes even if he/she has purchased a flexible ticket.

The same is true with cancellations as well.

Mytrip offers Cancellation Guarantee which is also an additional paid service in which they claim that you can cancel your trip up to 4 hours before departure – regardless of the reason.

Mytrip Cancellation Guarantee

But that’s also not true.

When it comes to cancellation and refund, Mytrip typically refuses to cancel your trip even if you have purchased the cancellation guarantee.

So even if you’ve got the Flexible Ticket service and are traveling with a Cancellation Guarantee , still, making changes, cancellations, and getting a refund from Mytrip is a hassle and generally unsuccessful.

To conclude everything, I would say:

While Mytrip may offer cheaper rates than the airlines in certain situations, using Mytrip is satisfactory only if everything goes as planned and you don’t need to make any changes or cancellations to your flight.

In case any problems or unexpected situations happen, your booking will most likely be a failure due to the worst customer service of Mytrip.

Likewise, making changes, cancellations, and getting a refund are generally unsuccessful when your flights are booked through Mytrip.

Despite having many odds and shortcomings, as far as its legitimacy is concerned , Mytrip is a legit company in a sense that it is owned by Etraveli Group which is acquired by Booking Holdings.

Etraveli Group Brands

In case you don’t know, Booking Holdings is one of the world’s leaders in providing online travel and related services.

It has the prestige of owning other world’s top online travel agencies such as Booking.com , Agoda , Priceline , and more.

Booking Holdings Brands

So if Mytrip were a scam, its parent company (Etraveli Group) probably won’t be acquired by Booking Holdings for $1.8 billion .

Moreover, Mytrip has been in business for the last 9 years and it is a fact that scam companies don’t survive this long.

By taking these two major factors into consideration, we simply can’t deny that Mytrip is legit.

However, Mytrip is not reliable at all.

So, Should You Book Directly or Through Mytrip?

I highly recommend you to AVOID BOOKING THROUGH Mytrip even if it offers you cheaper prices than booking directly with the airline.

And you know the reasons why:

First of all, Mytrip has the worst customer support which makes things extremely difficult to resolve in case you’re stuck in a problem and need any help.

Apart from that, making changes or cancellations to flights booked through Mytrip is generally unsuccessful even if you have the Flexible Ticket and Cancellation Guarantee .

Therefore, I strongly recommend you to book your flights directly with the airline to avoid losing your hard-earned money on Mytrip’s unreliable booking service.

That’s it from my side!

Flexible ticket scam. The only thing it covers is a free chat with the agent. The change fees they quoted me were for new one way ticket full purchases. I ended up having to buy a new one way ticket at full price. I can do that by myself.

I thought I was booking a holiday with easyjet, but it turned out to be with my trip, I have paid £745 deposit. I cannot get them to give me a booking reference, the holiday is in Cyprus next year, what are the chances of me getting this holiday? With

I’ve been scammed by them, spent 300 pounds of flight and bought their flexible protection option. then, in order to change the reservation to a different cheaper fare they wanted 600 pounds to change the ticket. When asked for instructions to issue a complain they said that they manage complains only on the phone. Asking for their legal address to write a lawyer letter, they said that they don’t disclose their location and a supervisor would call me.

So basically they don’t have a physical legal address.

my trip is completely unliable my airline changed the flight and i was i asked if i wanted to follow the changed plans or a refund. having asked for a refund i just lost 550,00euros. my trip keeps saying that i will get my money (it has been 10months now). they know it doesnt worth paying a lawyer for this amount so they just keep it…..

Avoid my trip like Covid …My trip is a scam as they do not meet the what they advertise impossible to get changes done or refunds simply to conduct the transaction you require so it my books it’s taking peoples money falsely

  • COVID-19 travel advice

Considering travel during the pandemic? Take precautions to protect yourself from COVID-19.

A coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine can prevent you from getting COVID-19 or from becoming seriously ill due to COVID-19 . But even if you're vaccinated, it's still a good idea to take precautions to protect yourself and others while traveling during the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you've had all recommended COVID-19 vaccine doses, including boosters, you're less likely to become seriously ill or spread COVID-19 . You can then travel more safely within the U.S. and internationally. But international travel can still increase your risk of getting new COVID-19 variants.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that you should avoid travel until you've had all recommended COVID-19 vaccine and booster doses.

Before you travel

As you think about making travel plans, consider these questions:

  • Have you been vaccinated against COVID-19 ? If you haven't, get vaccinated. If the vaccine requires two doses, wait two weeks after getting your second vaccine dose to travel. If the vaccine requires one dose, wait two weeks after getting the vaccine to travel. It takes time for your body to build protection after any vaccination.
  • Have you had any booster doses? Having all recommended COVID-19 vaccine doses, including boosters, increases your protection from serious illness.
  • Are you at increased risk for severe illness? Anyone can get COVID-19 . But older adults and people of any age with certain medical conditions are at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19 .
  • Do you live with someone who's at increased risk for severe illness? If you get infected while traveling, you can spread the COVID-19 virus to the people you live with when you return, even if you don't have symptoms.
  • Does your home or destination have requirements or restrictions for travelers? Even if you've had all recommended vaccine doses, you must follow local, state and federal testing and travel rules.

Check local requirements, restrictions and situations

Some state, local and territorial governments have requirements, such as requiring people to wear masks, get tested, be vaccinated or stay isolated for a period of time after arrival. Before you go, check for requirements at your destination and anywhere you might stop along the way.

Keep in mind these can change often and quickly depending on local conditions. It's also important to understand that the COVID-19 situation, such as the level of spread and presence of variants, varies in each country. Check back for updates as your trip gets closer.

Travel and testing

For vaccinated people.

If you have been fully vaccinated, the CDC states that you don't need to get tested before or after your trip within the U.S. or stay home (quarantine) after you return.

If you're planning to travel internationally outside the U.S., the CDC states you don't need to get tested before your trip unless it's required at your destination. Before arriving to the U.S., you need a negative test within the last day before your arrival or a record of recovery from COVID-19 in the last three months.

After you arrive in the U.S., the CDC recommends getting tested with a viral test 3 to 5 days after your trip. If you're traveling to the U.S. and you aren't a citizen, you need to be fully vaccinated and have proof of vaccination.

You don't need to quarantine when you arrive in the U.S. But check for any symptoms. Stay at home if you develop symptoms.

For unvaccinated people

Testing before and after travel can lower the risk of spreading the virus that causes COVID-19 . If you haven't been vaccinated, the CDC recommends getting a viral test within three days before your trip. Delay travel if you're waiting for test results. Keep a copy of your results with you when you travel.

Repeat the test 3 to 5 days after your trip. Stay home for five days after travel.

If at any point you test positive for the virus that causes COVID-19 , stay home. Stay at home and away from others if you develop symptoms. Follow public health recommendations.

Stay safe when you travel

In the U.S., you must wear a face mask on planes, buses, trains and other forms of public transportation. The mask must fit snugly and cover both your mouth and nose.

Follow these steps to protect yourself and others when you travel:

  • Get vaccinated.
  • Keep distance between yourself and others (within about 6 feet, or 2 meters) when you're in indoor public spaces if you're not fully vaccinated. This is especially important if you have a higher risk of serious illness.
  • Avoid contact with anyone who is sick or has symptoms.
  • Avoid crowds and indoor places that have poor air flow (ventilation).
  • Don't touch frequently touched surfaces, such as handrails, elevator buttons and kiosks. If you must touch these surfaces, use hand sanitizer or wash your hands afterward.
  • Wear a face mask in indoor public spaces. The CDC recommends wearing the most protective mask possible that you'll wear regularly and that fits. If you are in an area with a high number of new COVID-19 cases, wear a mask in indoor public places and outdoors in crowded areas or when you're in close contact with people who aren't vaccinated.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • If soap and water aren't available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub your hands together until they feel dry.
  • Don't eat or drink on public transportation. That way you can keep your mask on the whole time.

Because of the high air flow and air filter efficiency on airplanes, most viruses such as the COVID-19 virus don't spread easily on flights. Wearing masks on planes has likely helped lower the risk of getting the COVID-19 virus on flights too.

However, air travel involves spending time in security lines and airport terminals, which can bring you in close contact with other people. Getting vaccinated and wearing a mask when traveling can help protect you from COVID-19 while traveling.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has increased cleaning and disinfecting of surfaces and equipment, including bins, at screening checkpoints. TSA has also made changes to the screening process:

  • Travelers must wear masks during screening. However, TSA employees may ask travelers to adjust masks for identification purposes.
  • Travelers should keep a distance of 6 feet apart from other travelers when possible.
  • Instead of handing boarding passes to TSA officers, travelers should place passes (paper or electronic) directly on the scanner and then hold them up for inspection.
  • Each traveler may have one container of hand sanitizer up to 12 ounces (about 350 milliliters) in a carry-on bag. These containers will need to be taken out for screening.
  • Personal items such as keys, wallets and phones should be placed in carry-on bags instead of bins. This reduces the handling of these items during screening.
  • Food items should be carried in a plastic bag and placed in a bin for screening. Separating food from carry-on bags lessens the likelihood that screeners will need to open bags for inspection.

Be sure to wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds directly before and after going through screening.

Public transportation

If you travel by bus or train and you aren't vaccinated, be aware that sitting or standing within 6 feet (2 meters) of others for a long period can put you at higher risk of getting or spreading COVID-19 . Follow the precautions described above for protecting yourself during travel.

Even if you fly, you may need transportation once you arrive at your destination. You can search car rental options and their cleaning policies on the internet. If you plan to stay at a hotel, check into shuttle service availability.

If you'll be using public transportation and you aren't vaccinated, continue physical distancing and wearing a mask after reaching your destination.

Hotels and other lodging

The hotel industry knows that travelers are concerned about COVID-19 and safety. Check any major hotel's website for information about how it's protecting guests and staff. Some best practices include:

  • Enhanced cleaning procedures
  • Physical distancing recommendations indoors for people who aren't vaccinated
  • Mask-wearing and regular hand-washing by staff
  • Mask-wearing indoors for guests in public places in areas that have high cases of COVID-19
  • Vaccine recommendations for staff
  • Isolation and testing guidelines for staff who've been exposed to COVID-19
  • Contactless payment
  • Set of rules in case a guest becomes ill, such as closing the room for cleaning and disinfecting
  • Indoor air quality measures, such as regular system and air filter maintenance, and suggestions to add air cleaners that can filter viruses and bacteria from the air

Vacation rentals, too, are enhancing their cleaning procedures. They're committed to following public health guidelines, such as using masks and gloves when cleaning, and building in a waiting period between guests.

Make a packing list

When it's time to pack for your trip, grab any medications you may need on your trip and these essential safe-travel supplies:

  • Alcohol-based hand sanitizer (at least 60% alcohol)
  • Disinfectant wipes (at least 70% alcohol)
  • Thermometer

Considerations for people at increased risk

Anyone can get very ill from the virus that causes COVID-19 . But older adults and people of any age with certain medical conditions are at increased risk for severe illness. This may include people with cancer, serious heart problems and a weakened immune system. Getting the recommended COVID-19 vaccine and booster doses can help lower your risk of being severely ill from COVID-19 .

Travel increases your chance of getting and spreading COVID-19 . If you're unvaccinated, staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others from COVID-19 . If you must travel and aren't vaccinated, talk with your health care provider and ask about any additional precautions you may need to take.

Remember safety first

Even the most detailed and organized plans may need to be set aside when someone gets ill. Stay home if you or any of your travel companions:

  • Have signs or symptoms, are sick or think you have COVID-19
  • Are waiting for results of a COVID-19 test
  • Have been diagnosed with COVID-19
  • Have had close contact with someone with COVID-19 in the past five days and you're not up to date with your COVID-19 vaccines

If you've had close contact with someone with COVID-19 , get tested after at least five days. Wait to travel until you have a negative test. Wear a mask if you travel up to 10 days after you've had close contact with someone with COVID-19 .

  • According to the CDC,  fully vaccinated people can now safely travel in the US .
  • However, there are still risks with flying , renting a car , staying in a hotel , or booking an Airbnb .
  • Here's what medical and industry experts say you should know before booking travel.

Insider Today

Finally, the vaccine in response to the novel coronavirus is here. Reports show that half of all US citizens have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and many are eagerly wondering: is it safe to travel right now?

The CDC says so, as you're fully vaccinated . The agency previously advised against all travel, even for vaccinated people, but the new guidance said that should vaccinated individuals want to travel domestically, they may do so without a quarantine period or testing.

Of course, without herd immunity, resuming travel comes with some level of risk. To answer the question, 'is it safe to travel?', Insider Reviews reached out to experts including infectious disease and ER doctors, cleaning specialists, travel industry professionals, and representatives from major rental cars , hotels , Airbnb , and transportation organizations , to reveal both the risks and best practices associated with various forms of travel during a pandemic.

And if you do book a trip that is ultimately postponed or canceled, it's important to understand your cancellation policies and consider options for the best travel insurance .

Wherever you go, follow guidelines and advice set forth by organizations such as the CDC and WHO, and practice safety measures including wearing a mask, washing your hands, and maintaining social distancing. You should also consider whether you're leaving or traveling to a hotspot, so as not to contribute to infection spikes.

And if you need ideas on socially distant locations, we have inspiration for that below, too.

Is it safe to travel? Read on for expert advice on rental cars, flying, hotels, Airbnbs, and more.

Are rental cars safe.

If you're among the many urban dwellers without a car of your own, you might be wondering if rental cars are safe to drive in a pandemic. For guidance, we talked to several experts, including Dr. Thomas Russo, chief of the division of infectious disease at the University at Buffalo.

"Remember that most of the transmission of the coronavirus is respiratory — it's not through inanimate objects," says Dr. Russo. "When you're in a rental car, the greatest risk is if you happen to be in the car with someone else and they could be infected."

When it comes to the car itself, the risk is reasonably low. "Even if there's an area you touch that wasn't properly wiped down and might have been contaminated, as long as you don't touch your mouth, nose, and face, and have good hand hygiene in between, you should still be protected," Dr. Russo says.

Additionally, rental car companies are taking rigorous new cleaning measures under recommendations from various health authorities to sanitize key high-touch areas.

Are hotels safe.

Many regular travelers are long-time hotel devotees who adore a beautiful property or sprawling resort filled with high-end amenities and services. But even these frequent hotel guests are likely concerned that staying in one risks exposure to the virus.

After all, checking-into a hotel means mingling with other guests and staff in common spaces like the lobby, elevators, pool decks, spas, and golf courses. When it's time to eat, there are busy restaurants to consider, and that's all assuming your own guest room is properly cleaned and sanitized.

Hotel room objects and furnishings are shared and reused by visitors, sometimes with only hours in between. So, is it safe to stay in a hotel right now?

Dr. Russo says the answer is highly individual. "If it's a trip that is important and necessary, I feel relatively safe using the proper protective measures like wearing a mask, distancing, disinfecting, and hand hygiene."

We also asked him about the worst-case scenario, in which an infected person stayed in your room hours before you. If the housekeeping crew cleaned and sanitized according to guidelines, would you escape risk?

"The answer is probably yes," Dr. Russo says. But, "that's not an ideal scenario." You'd be better off specifically requesting a room no one has stayed in for a day or two."

He also adds, "Wear a mask during the check-in process, going in the elevator up to your room, or even the stairwell. I'm a big fan of mask use because this magical six-foot zone is based on probability. The closer you are to someone, and the longer you're close to someone that's infectious, the more likely you are to get infected."

What are hotels' cleaning policies.

Most major hotel chains have announced wide-reaching new cleaning policies made in combination with health experts. These policies also focus on social distancing and contact-free transactions such as virtual check-in and out, digital keys, limited dining, and more.

Dr. Robert Quigley, who serves as the senior vice president and regional medical director of global medical travel risk management company International SOS, spent four days and four nights transforming an Upper East Side hotel into a utilitarian home base for health care workers on the front lines.

"We came in and converted what was a very high end, very luxurious hotel into a laboratory with the objective to protect the health and safety of the employees that were willing to come in and work."

Now, that work is being replicated in hotels for regular guests, placing technology at the forefront. In addition to adhering to strict CDC guidelines on health and safety, some brands including InterContinental Hotel Group (IHG) , Loews , and Best Western are adopting American Hotel & Lodging Association's (AHLA) StaySafe campaign to help facilitate everything from how to conduct a contactless check-in to a new set of cleaning standards and protocols.

Additionally, Marriott Bonvoy hotels rolled out the Marriott Global Cleanliness Council , focusing on treating high-touch surface areas with hospital-grade disinfectants, providing disinfecting wipes in each guest room, and reducing person-to-person contact by removing furniture and installing hand-sanitizing stations. More than 3,200 Marriott hotels will now allow guests to use their phones to check-in, access their rooms, make requests, and order room service without contact.

Similarly, Four Seasons worked with experts at Johns Hopkins Medicine International on its new Lead With Care program for cleanliness and safety. The program promises that restaurants and bars will operate with reduced capacity to allow for social distancing, and the hotel will leverage technology for safety, by way of its Four Seasons app and chat.

Here are the new plans and precautions being taken from major hotel brands around the world .

Is airbnb safe.

Just as some people have always preferred hotels, others choose Airbnb to enjoy more space in residential-style homes that are well-suited for longer vacations, or family and group stays.

These days, they may seem especially attractive given the fact that you are often booking an entire home that is protected from interaction with others. However, everything from kitchen utensils to linens were used by previous guests.

Airbnb has, however, announced rigorous new procedures including a program known as Enhanced Clean , which all hosts are now required to follow. However, not all hosts are required to take extra measures, so read up on specific listings' protocols if you want to ensure additional protocols are being taken.

Dr. Russo says that staying in a private Airbnb is likely to be safer than a hotel, given there is generally less direct person-to-person contact. But he also encourages taking extra preventative measures such as running "utensils and dishware through the dishwasher when you get there" and laundering bed linens and towels "so you have control of what you want to be washed and cleaned." The CDC also has stated in its lodging guidelines that private home rentals like Airbnbs are safer than hotels, but only if your stay only includes those from your own household.

To be extra safe, Dr. Russo also suggests running a disinfecting wipe over all flat surfaces, phones, TV remotes, door handles, bathroom faucets, and toilet handles.

Of course, that also means you're now cleaning the home for which you already paid a lofty cleaning fee.

Hotels vs. vacation rentals: which one is safer.

After breaking down the risks of both hotels and vacation rentals such as Airbnb or Vrbo , no matter the type of lodging you pick, the main factors to consider are the likelihood you'll encounter other people, the number and length of such encounters, and whether the location and region are experiencing high rates of infection.

"When booking any type of lodging, consider how many people you'll be surrounded by, when was the last time someone stayed in that accommodation, and how is the state or city doing in regards to flattening the curve," said Dr. Neil Brown, K Health 's chief diagnosis officer.

With either choice, be aware of high-touch areas and flat surfaces that might facilitate virus transmission. If possible, book accommodations with a significant margin of time since the last guest stayed in the same space.

The doctors we spoke with agreed private vacation rentals, however, are likely safer than hotels because they come with fewer person-to-person interactions. And, as stated above, the CDC agrees on this point.

"While there is no question hotels are working diligently to keep their hotels clean and sanitized, Airbnb has a huge advantage given that the renter is generally the only one occupying the property," said Dr. Brown. "With Airbnb's new Enhanced Cleaning Initiative, the company provides a better option than public hotel spaces … Double-check to see if the host is participating in the program," he said.

Dr. Russo "absolutely agree[s]" that staying in a private Airbnb, especially one that allows no-contact check-in, such as through a lockbox, is the safer option.

But both doctors recommend seriously evaluating the risks versus rewards with either choice, with Dr. Brown noting, "Personally, I would do my best to avoid traveling altogether, but if it is necessary, I would feel more comfortable staying at an Airbnb after doing my own disinfecting upon arrival."

Is flying safe right now.

Entering an airport, waiting in long lines, and sitting next to strangers of unknown backgrounds, for a prolonged period, in a closed setting, all seems about as high-risk as it can get right now.

To determine if flying is safe, we turned to a diverse panel of experts including an infectious disease doctor, an ER doctor, a pilot, a medical advisor for an aviation trade association, and the founders of popular flight deal platforms to discuss the risks of flying during COVID-19, and precautions to mitigate those risks.

First the good news: airports are trying various tactics to minimize contact between people, promote social distancing, and conducting temperature checks. Additionally, airplanes are designed to clean and filter air quickly according to Dr. David Powell, a medical advisor for a trade group that represents most of the world's major passenger airlines and cargo carriers.

"Customers sit facing forward and not toward each other, seat backs provide a barrier, and the limited movement of passengers once seated adds to the onboard protection. Moreover, airflow is less conducive to droplet spread than other indoor environments: flow rates are high, directed in a controlled manner (from ceiling to floor), to limit mixing, and the use of High Efficiency Particulate Air filters ensures that the air supply is pure."

But while these features help reduce risks, they do not eliminate them. Commercial airplane travel still means flying in a confined space with other people. Another passenger's droplet can easily invade your personal space even with no one in the middle seat beside you.

Says Dr. Russo, "Once you're on the flight, you've been dealt a hand. Hopefully, everyone around you isn't infected, but you just don't know for sure. A longer flight is going to be a greater risk even though the air is handled pretty well because it's a close space, exposed to other individuals, and the time of exposure is longer."

If you must fly, wear your best mask, sanitize all surfaces, and try to avoid eating, drinking, or using the lavatory.

Is train travel safe.

Trains offer another way to approach getting from point A to point B, for both regional and long-distance routes. For travelers who prefer to stick closer to the ground and avoid planes, or for those who would rather nap, read, and take in the sights over managing navigation and traffic, trains offer a solid alternate option.

And while you'll have more space to spread out than in an airplane, traveling by train still generally involves interfacing with many people — so, is train travel safe? Like other facets of travel, the answer depends on your set of circumstances. However, there are ways to minimize risk.

Dr. Paz, VP of medical at the digital primary care provider K Health says, "By maintaining social distance from others, using face coverings, and frequent hand washing, you can drastically decrease your chances of contracting COVID."

It also helps to know that Amtrak has rolled out a host of new safety measures meant to facilitate safe travel that includes requiring masks, sanitizing surfaces, and limiting ticket sales on reserved services to allow for social distancing. Individuals traveling alone can now enjoy an empty seat guaranteed next to them.

Amtrak has also enhanced cleaning protocols at the station, with added measures for social distancing, and are repromoting their "private room" seating options on long haul routes. These come in a variety of sizes to accommodate solo travelers, couples, and groups of families or friends. A standard room features two seats that can be converted into beds and come with complimentary Wi-Fi, charging outlets and an expansive window for taking in the views. It's not unlike a moving hotel, both in terms of amenities and also potential risk exposure. It costs about the same as a flight, sometimes more.

But unlike planes, which have advanced airflow and filtration systems, trains are far more basic. Though, they're certainly roomier, and private, if you splurge for such accommodations.

Is skiing safe right now.

With winter and peak ski and snowboard season in full swing, you may also be wondering if skiing is a safe COVID activity. The good news is that it can be a relatively low-risk option as long as you stay diligent and take proper precautions.

Dr. Russo notes that skiing would fall into the lowest risk category if guests physically distance, wear face masks, and avoid enclosed gondolas/trams or going indoors. "I perceive those two venues as the greatest risk," he says. "What makes me nervous about downhill skiing is the temptation to go inside and warm up and eat and drink is going to be high."

Additionally, most ski resorts have implemented a wide range of new policies this season. It's best to check each resort's website for details before you plan a trip, but new procedures to expect this ski season include requiring face coverings, physical distancing (including on chairlifts and in gondolas), advance reservations for lift tickets (often granting priority to pass holders), cashless transactions, limiting class size for lessons, and reducing restaurant seating. Many resorts are also limiting on-mountain capacity, especially for peak dates so it may pay off to plan and book early.

The National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) offers a  state-by-state listing  of links to COVID-related restrictions and rules, and the NSAA's  "Ski Well, Be Well" campaign  outlines best practices for ski areas, skiers, and riders to stay safe and healthy on the slopes this season.

And while outdoor activities, in general, are less risky, consider how you will get to the ski resort. "Getting to the ski lodge, I would suggest renting a car ," Dr. Russo says. "I know in a lot of places you can take the hotel transportation or shuttle buses, but then you're going to see different people in a more fixed air space, so I don't recommend that; you increase your risk if you use shared transportation options."

But the good news is that once you're on the top of the mountain and wearing a mask, the risk of COVID-19 exposure is minimal. "It seems to me that actually on the slopes themselves [the risk has] got to be close to zero," Dr. Russo says.

How travel industry experts advise clients to book travel.

While many travelers previously booked travel independently, some are returning to travel agents. These seasoned professionals have spent years in the business and are well-equipped to help clients identify viable locations with vetted, flexible policies. They may also have better insights into new practices at specific hotels to help determine how clean and safe they will be, and whether facilities and amenities may be impacted.

Their advice is to plan for future travel, book refundable options, travel domestically and take road trips, opt for socially distant places with access to nature, plan longer "workcations" that mix remote work with play, and don't forget about prioritizing your mental health.

Socially distant travel: safe vacations during covid-19.

As noted by various experts, no matter your destination, your risk of infection largely depends on factors such as whether you'll encounter other people, the intensity of such encounters, and if the location is experiencing high rates of infection.

While nothing can be guaranteed safe 100 percent safe, if you heed expert advice, take necessary precautions, and make informed decisions led by CDC and WHO guidance, you may be able to explore the world again soon.

If you find yourself in such a position, consider these locations within the United States that are well-suited to outdoor activities, offer socially-distant-friendly lodging, and remove the need for international travel.

When it comes to Expedia prices

When it comes to expedia travel insurance, when it comes to the expedia cancellation policy, when it comes to the expedia loyalty program, when it comes to maximizing credit card points, the pros and cons of expedia recapped.

Frequent travelers likely know that there’s something better than a dream trip: a dream trip that you booked on a bargain.

The ways to save money on travel are plentiful. You can redeem hotels and airline points, or take advantage of last-minute travel deals, to name a few. And booking through third-party online travel agencies like Expedia can sometimes yield especially big savings.

Beyond just deals, Expedia has robust search filters that make finding your perfect vacation easy. It streamlines purchasing trip insurance , which can be especially important for travel these days. Plus, the Expedia Rewards program earns you points to pay for future bookings.

But booking through an OTA like Expedia is not without its drawbacks. Here's a look at some of those to help you weigh the pros and cons of booking travel through Expedia.

Video preview image

Pro: Expedia has frequent sales, last-minute travel deals and bundle discounts

Expedia deals are aplenty, whether it’s a bundling discount or a sale.

Bundling: A major component of booking travel on Expedia is the practice of bundling, where you can expect additional savings for booking more than one product (e.g., flight and hotel, or hotel and attraction ticket) in one transaction. For example, when we searched for a hotel and rental car in Miami, one five-day booking option included up to three free rental car days while another offered one free night.

A perk of booking travel through Expedia is that you select your hotel, airfare and car rental in separate steps in the process. This makes it easy to bookmark the page and compare the cost of these items on Expedia versus the cost on the company’s direct website.

Expedia payment plans: If you don’t want to pay for your whole trip at the time of booking, Expedia allows you to make smaller payments through Affirm, which is a service that offers short-term loans for online purchases. If approved by Affirm , you’ll be able to pay for your trip in monthly installments.

You can also check Expedia’s Deals page and Expedia’s Last-Minute Deals page . Both tend to offer an eclectic mix of travel deals, ranging from cheap motels in tiny towns to lavish resorts in major tourist destinations. We’ve spotted deals as high as 70% off.

» Learn more: How to find cheaper last-minute flights

Con: Booking direct is sometimes still cheaper than Expedia

Sure, Expedia sales and last-minute deals are nice, but that’s not to say that you can’t find other (sometimes better) deals for booking directly with the travel provider. Many offer their own exclusive deals — and they might save you even more than booking with online travel agencies. Compare prices across both Expedia and the specific company to ensure you’re getting the best price.

And sometimes the savings go beyond just the sticker price. For example, boutique hotel chain Ovolo Hotels offers generous amenities including free laundry, happy hour refreshments and a daily breakfast buffet — but only if you book directly with them.

Pro: You can purchase an Expedia travel insurance policy

Expedia partners with various insurance providers, depending on your individual booking, to offer trip protection.

F or flights: Expedia offers travel insurance protection options that cover flight cancellation, medical emergencies and other covered circumstances.

For hotels: Choose hotel booking protection to reimburse your stay in the case of cancellation.

For car rentals: You can add car rental damage protection for an extra per-day fee.

Coverage varies by plan, but you can typically expect reimbursement for some (or all) trip costs if your trip is impacted by covered reasons. Covered reasons typically include delays, loss, theft or damage to one’s baggage and personal belongings. You’re also typically reimbursed for covered medical expenses, including emergency evacuation if you get sick or injured during your trip.

But there are many limitations and exclusions, so read your policy’s fine print to understand what’s covered.

Expedia 24-hour cancellation

When you book a flight on Expedia, you can cancel for a full refund as long as you do so within 24 hours of booking. The U.S. Department of Transportation requires airlines to allow you to cancel a flight for a full refund if canceled within 24 hours of booking and it was booked seven days before departure.

Con: Outside travel insurance might be more comprehensive or cheaper (and sometimes free)

You can opt out of Expedia’s travel insurance and either be completely uninsured — or simply acquire your insurance elsewhere. And there are better travel insurance policies out there.

After a comprehensive review of dozens of plans that assessed factors including price and COVID-19 coverage, here are the best travel insurance policies .

What’s more, you might not even need to pay for travel insurance at all. Many credit cards offer travel insurance benefits if you paid for your trip with that card.

Pro: Expedia offers some fully refundable options

Because airlines, hotels and other travel services set their own individual policies on Expedia, change and cancellation policies can vary significantly. While it can be tricky to parse the policies for each individual property, use Expedia’s “fully refundable” search filter to limit potential bookings to those with flexible policies.

my trip is it safe

For straightforward requests, use the Expedia service page to make changes and get a refund. If you’re unable to get help through Expedia’s self-service tools, other ways to get in touch with Expedia include live chat, a dedicated Twitter account ( @expediahelp ) and a phone line.

Con: Most cancellation policies are bad, confusing or both

Because airlines are required to give full refunds if you cancel within 24 hours of booking, Expedia lets you change or cancel your flight reservation without fees within the same time period.

For everything else, good luck. Because each travel provider sets its own policies, navigating them can be a headache. In some cases, canceling through Expedia means you’ll have to chase after the hotel or activity provider to recoup the costs.

Additionally, prepare for cancellation fees (both Expedia’s own fees as well as fees from the service provider). That’s if you’re able to cancel at all. Some bookings through Expedia are nonrefundable altogether.

Pro: It’s great for commitment-phobes

The new Expedia Rewards program, One Key Rewards, lets you earn OneKeyCash for every booking you make on the platform (plus on Vrbo and Hotels.com), which can then be used like cash toward future trips. Not only that, but Expedia users can earn status, which includes benefits like exclusive members-only discounts and extra benefits at VIP Access properties (such as free breakfast or late checkout).

For travelers who don’t like to commit to one airline or hotel company, don’t travel that frequently, or who book travel that otherwise doesn’t have its own loyalty program (like a tour or vacation rental), Expedia makes it possible to still get rewarded.

» Learn more: The guide to One Key Rewards

Con: Most hotel and airline loyalty programs are far more rewarding

While the One Key Rewards program is fine, most travel loyalty programs tied to specific hotels or airlines are almost always more rewarding. For individual point values, most other currencies of airline and hotel points are worth far more than OneKeyCash, which nets you 2% back on cruise, hotel, activity and rental car bookings but only .2% on flights. Once it's in your account, you can use it to pay for bookings just like you would cash — though you’ll need enough OneKeyCash in your account to pay for an entire flight, not just part of it.

Additionally, holding specific airline or hotel elite status is typically more lucrative than the value of elite status on One Key Rewards as most perks extend to Expedia VIP Access properties only. That said, some elite members can enjoy up to 20% discounts on hotels and free price drop protection on flights, which is a plus.

As for how to use Expedia points, OneKeyCash can be redeemed on “pay now” bookings for participating purchases priced in U.S. dollars. You can use it to pay for part of a hotel booking, but you’ll have to have enough to pay for the full cost of a flight (including taxes and fees). And while you can’t transfer rewards, you can use your OneKeyCash to book travel for others.

But depending what status you’re able to reach with individual brand loyalty programs, you can likely expect better perks. So if you’re fine committing to one brand, you’re almost always better off striving to earn its status versus with One Key Rewards. But if you only stay for a night here or there or prefer to book based on location or price, it’s a way to earn a few more rewards.

Pro: Expedia counts as a travel purchase

Many travel rewards credit cards give you a higher rewards rate on travel purchases, and booking sites like Expedia typically count as travel spending. For example, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card earns 2 points per dollar on travel spending, compared with 1 point per dollar on most purchases.

Con: Travel credit cards are usually better for earning and redeeming rewards

If you’re loyal to a specific hotel or airline brand — or are open to pledging allegiance — credit cards aligned with those brands typically pay more on purchases directly from the brand partner. For example:

Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card

on American Express' website

Chase United Airlines Mileage Plus Credit Card

on Chase's website

Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card

• 2 miles per $1 spent on Delta purchases.

Terms apply.

• 2 miles per $1 spent on United purchases.

• 12 points per $1 spent on eligible Hilton purchases.

• 6 points per $1 spent at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels.

• 1 mile per $1 spent.

• 3 points per $1 spent.

• 2 points per $1 spent.

Even general-purpose travel rewards cards that aren't tied to a specific airline or hotel chain will often reward you more handsomely for booking through their own portals than they would for going through a site like Expedia. Going back to the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card : As mentioned, it earns 2 points per dollar on most travel purchases — but 5 points per dollar on travel booked through the Chase portal . Among general-purpose travel cards:

Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

• 5 miles per $1 on hotels and car rentals booked through Capital One Travel.

• 2 miles per $1 on other purchases.

• 5 points per $1 spent on travel booked through Chase.

• 10 points per $1 spent on hotels and rental cars booked through Chase.

• 5 points per $1 on air travel booked through Chase.

• 5 points per $1 spent on flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel, on up to $500,000 spent per year.

• 5 points per $1 on prepaid hotels booked with American Express Travel.

• 2 miles per $1 spent.

• 1 point per $1 spent.

If you're considering booking with other online travel agencies like Priceline or Hotels.com, here are the best credit cards for online travel booking websites .

With the right deal, booking travel — including flights, hotels, cruises or car rentals — on Expedia could be worth it. It makes searching for travel relatively easy given the massive array of available listings, coupled with thoughtful search functionality to actually help you create your ideal itinerary.

But don’t automatically assume it’s a cheap way to book travel. Especially given the complicated cancellation policies, it might become among the most expensive, should an uninsured trip need to be canceled.

The customer support has lead to no reasonable solution and no responsibility taken.

They will get back to you via your email as soon as possible, they saying this since 4 hours and no help. one time they are saying we will change but asking 128 GBP altough the ticket were cheaper than the price i paid for the one i had, please please dont buy from this company because they dont help when you need :(. you will lose your time, energy, and money in return only frustration

Very concerned with this company…

Very concerned with this company dealing , I had to cancel a passenger from my trip due to medical emergency and understood some costs will arise, however after I agreed the price they called me and changed the cost. They did this three times and changed price three times and blame airline. I asked to escalate the issue and speak to manager they refused and the caller Anushka disconnected the call

This company had helped me deal with an…

This company had helped me deal with an issue my airline couldn’t seem to be bothered too. Really pleased with the customer service, how fast they answer a query or telephone is phenomenal.

Date of experience : 06 April 2024

I worry about my trip with mytrip and hope all will go smooth after all this experience..

is trip.com legit?

Is trip.com legit? Why you should never use them in 2023 (or ever)

If you’re searching for flights through popular flight search sites such as Skyscanner, you’ll have probably come across trip.com.  Flights listed on their site are often significantly cheaper, sometimes even 50% cheaper than those listed in other places. The temptation to grab these tantalisingly cheap deals is understandable, but, if Internet searches are anything to go by, many budget travellers are asking themselves whether trip.com is legit, trustworthy, reliable or safe to book with . Having had an absolutely terrible experience with this company in July 2022, I’m here to answer your questions with some hard truths, and hopefully save you a lot of hassle, money and heartache.

TLDR: Never book anything with trip.com. They are absolutely the worst travel company I’ve ever dealt with.

Here’s a little bit about what happened to me. If you’re asking yourself is trip.com legit or safe and just looking for straight answers to your questions, feel free to skip my horror story and just read the rest, though I assure you that you will be thinking twice about booking with them once you hear what happened to me (and others!).

I booked a return flight on trip.com, as I was due to go to an important family event in California. The day before my flight was due to leave the UK, I received an email from trip.com saying my flight was cancelled by the airline . When trying to rebook travel through their website, I was told there were no available flights, although there were plenty of flights still going (including on their own site). UK / EU law states that if your flight is cancelled by the airline you have a right of being rerouted to your destination by any means necessary, or alternatively receive a refund. As I was supposed to go to a specific event, I wished to be rerouted.

I then found out that trip.com, even though they have a UK phone number, are actually a Chinese company . Dealing with their Chinese call centre was terrible – agents with poor English repeatedly giving me contradictory information about whether or not I was being booked on a flight, then insisting there were no flights available. They didn’t care at all that I  was going to an important event . When I asked to speak to a manager, they always said one wasn’t available, and if I insisted and refused to get off the phone, they’d get another agent, which I’m pretty sure was only pretending to be the manager, seeing as they had no additional authority or knowledge (but hey, at least they didn’t just change their voice and pretend to be the manager, like what happened to this lady when she tried to speak to one!). I was told I was being put on another flight, then when I woke up at 4am to go to the airport, had an email saying the airline rejected the request.

After spending several days trying to sort this out, I was eventually told there were no flights and forced to take a refund or lose my money . This refund would apparently come in “up to 14 working days” because of the airline. To cut a long (and horrible) story short, I missed out on the event I’d been looking forward to for many months, because they would not put me on another flight. I was left with no ticket and a vague promise of a refund that may or may not come.

Having left them one star reviews everywhere I could ( here and here , for example)  they offered to “expedite” my refund request so that it takes up to 7 working days (how? I thought the airline made that impossible? Hmm) and offered me $50 in site credit as compensation, which is absolutely insulting considering they ruined my trip with their incredibly poor customer service . They keep insisting it’s not their responsibility to reroute me if the flight is cancelled and seem to think I should be grateful that I am even getting a refund.

As of today, I am not even sure the refund is really coming, as I only have their word that it’s on its way.

As far as I am concerned, booking through them does not negate my legal rights, which, since the flight was due to leave from a UK airport, mean I have the right to be rerouted by any means necessary to get to my destination in time. Having booked through them, I couldn’t go directly through the airline, so it’s up to them to ensure my legal rights are upheld. I believe they broke the law by refusing to reroute me when I repeatedly and clearly stated that was what I wanted.

But regardless of whether they broke the law when they refused to reroute me or were unable to do so because of constraints placed on them by the airline (which is what they are claiming), the bottom line is that I booked through them and was therefore denied my legal rights . Reading the many many bad reviews they have on sites like Trustpilot  , Sitejabber , and others, it seems like I am far from alone. At least I wasn’t stranded abroad because of their screw up like this person , or had my flight changed to another country without my consent like this one ! Still, my summer plans have been absolutely ruined because of their awful customer service .

I should also note that Trip.com have also repeatedly ignored a subject access request from me. This is a legal requirement in the UK that states they have to provide me with the personal information they have on me if I request it. This includes recordings of any calls made to the customer service centre, including the one where I repeatedly said I did not want to cancel my flight and wanted to be rerouted.

( UPDATE: 8 days, several calls and dozens of emails later, I was finally provided with the details on how to get my information out of them as per my subject access request. This happened after I emailed Skyscanner’s CEO , which got this handled by Skyscanner’s customer service manager. After emailing their data compliance people I was told I’d get an answer within one working day . It’s now been almost two weeks and I’ve heard nothing back . Meanwhile I was being offered more compensation, but still not what I asked for, which is the equivalent of a flight to my original destination. trip.com then basically disappeared and stopped answering my emails , even though I’ve asked for an official response if the insufficient offer of compensation they’d made is their final offer.)

Eventually, after chasing Skyscanner again, I got a reply and some compensation. It basically took me over a month of constant hassling and going on a bad PR rampage to get it, and it was still less than what I thought was fair.

After my terrible experience and the resulting research I did, I am now able to answer some of the most common questions about trip.com,  including things like “Is trip.com legit?”, “Is trip.com safe to book with?” and all those other questions that show people are not quick to trust this company. So…

Is trip.com legit?

The answer to this depends on what you mean by “legit”. trip.com is a real company, though in practice they may as well be a scam . The experience myself and many others have had with them often ends up being out of pocket, with no flights , wasting whole days trying to get anywhere with their agents, having to spend hundreds and even thousands of dollars or pounds to get to your destination, being stranded or having to give up on your holiday.

Is trip.com legit for flights?

Absolutely not. If your flight gets delayed, cancelled or is otherwise affected by the sort of issues that are now happening all the time you may well lose your money and not have a ticket . Trip.com may refuse to refund you the money or hold onto it for months or even years.

Is trip.com legit for hotels?

I’ve never booked a hotel through them (and never will), but reading people’s reviews, it seems they are just as bad for hotels as they are for flights . They often forget to notify the hotel of reservations , leaving people stranded and their site doesn’t update when hotels are closed down or are full, meaning people can turn up in the middle of the night with nowhere to stay. If you book with trip.com you are gambling away your money and potentially also your safety .

Is trip.com trustworthy?

In my opinion: absolutely not . Trip.com is based in China. Nothing inherently bad about that, but they do seem to have very poor customer service standards and don’t always understand or uphold the law in the countries they serve.

Paying trip.com and getting a confirmation from them   doesn’t mean you will fly . Sometimes they fail to pass your payment to the airline , meaning you don’t actually have a ticket. Check out this review for one of many examples .

If anything goes wrong with your booking (which is likely in this climate of delays, cancellations, strikes and other travel disasters), you will not be looked after by trip.com . They plaster their website full of “guarantees” and talk about “peace of mind”, but these are just for show.

For example, the first time I tried to book a flight through them, they sold me a “price freeze” for £9 to lock the price of the flight for 12 hours . After just two hours I got an email saying there were “no more flights at that price” . So what did I just pay for? Thankfully I got a refund for the fake price freeze, but in hindsight that should have been a red flag not to believe anything they say. Here’s another person this happened to , making me think this is not a freak incident!

Others have been less fortunate. Take this guy , for example, who paid for a refund guarantee , only to discover he’s wasted his money when he actually needed the refund. This is just one of many bad reviews people in similar situations have left trip.com

Trip.com agents are trained to get you off the phone no matter what . I was repeatedly told things were going to happen and I would get an email about it, but then either an email never came, or I got one saying the exact opposite.

Is trip.com safe?

It is absolutely not safe to book with trip.com. They are not members of any trade associations (at least in western countries like UK, USA, CA and EU countries), they are not ATOL protected . If anything goes wrong, you have nothing to protect you from the consequences. And things do go wrong all the time. Their agents make a lot of mistakes and won’t rectify them , or at least not in time for you to catch your flight. They hold onto your refund from the airline for weeks or even months if you are issued one . They make changes to flights without telling you and won’t refund the money if you can no longer travel as a result. And worst of all, sometimes they tell you they’ve issued your tickets, but don’t confirm with the airline , so you never get to travel at all!

Who are trip.com?

Trip.com, formerly Ctrip, are a big Chinese travel company . Trip.com group now own a lot of travel websites, including budgetair, cheaptickets and others , some of these are owned through a company called Travix, which trip.com also owns. Most importantly, they also own Skyscanner , which in my opinion is one of the reasons why it’s no longer a trustworthy site. Skyscanner pushes trip.com and their properties all the time, giving them prominent placement and creating a false sense of security for visitors. I only booked with trip.com because I found them on Skyscanner and thought they were a trustworthy company. Don’t make the same mistake I (and many others) did. Avoid booking with trip.com.

How can you contact trip.com?

If you’re trying to contact trip.com then perhaps you are already having a problem with them, in which case, I’m sorry. If you google “trip.com contact number” followed by your country, you should be able to find their contact number. However, in my experience, going through to an agent on the phone is no better than using their online chat. In fact, the online chat might give their agent the opportunity to cut and paste stuff into their translation software so they might understand you better. In my experience, there is no advantage to trying to use your voice to elicit any kind of response from them. Save yourself the hassle and use the chat service. You’ll get nowhere, but at least you can say you tried before getting to the next stage I will detail below.

How can you get through to a real person on trip.com’s annoying chat feature?

Trip.com’s chat (you can access it through their customer support page ) is designed to get rid of you rather than help you . As such, it will keep throwing crappy, useless answers at you rather than giving you the option to speak to an agent. To get to an agent, pick the relevant topic from their list, which should give you a bunch of questions and answers. Pick a random question to get the answer. If there’s no option to “consult an agent” at the end of that, click the “give feedback” at the bottom left. Make sure you click the “terrible” option to let trip.com know what you think of their crappy chatbot. As part of their automatic apology for their failure to provide a decent service, they’ll provide you with the option to speak to an agent. Click that and you will (eventually) be connected to someone in their Chinese call centre. Don’t expect any actual help, though!

How can you get through to a manager on trip.com?

To get someone actually dealing with you as a person, you’ll need to think outside of the box. Once you’ve tried dealing with their incompetent agents and gotten nowhere (and only then, sadly, because you have to give them a chance to do their job, even though they will ultimately fail), you can start making some noise on social media. The easiest way to get their attention is to give them a one star review on sites like Trustpilot or Sitejabber .  If you’ve downloaded their crappy app, you can also give them a one star review in the Apple or Android store, though the character limit is annoying and it’s harder for them to get in touch with you on there (still fun, though). Now sit back and watch the fake caring reply appear in all its poor Google Translated glory. Do not be fooled. Trip.com doesn’t care. But if you’ve provided your booking reference, you will hopefully get an email from (supposedly) a “customer success manager” you can deal with. Make sure you give them details of your booking or they won’t be able to contact you.

If you have a Twitter account, you can also tweet trip.com on there with your complaint. They will ask you to message them your details for them to contact you.

Personally, I prefer Trustpilot and Sitejabber, because they will let you edit your review as many times as you want. I edited my review repeatedly to keep up with the developing situation and to refute their various lies.

Sadly, none of this helped me fly to my destination in time or receive adequate compensation, but it seems to have worked for some people looking for refunds, as some reviewers have changed their one star reviews to reflect the fact that trip.com have provided a refund / compensation. Maybe it will work for you.

In my experience, these are the things they respond to. For myself, I googled “trip.com reviews” and have been going through and adding mine everywhere, including on reddit threads. It might not make a difference to what happens in my case, but it sure as hell might save others from going through the same shit I did.

What other things can you try if you’re getting nowhere with trip.com?

If you’re not getting anywhere with them, you might also want to leave some bad reviews for Skyscanner (that is, if you found the trip.com flight through them). Their customer service agents are marginally better, plus the company itself is based in the UK. They will contact trip.com for you to ask them to look into issues, though there’s no guarantee anything will come out of it .

Many people seem to have had good results with doing a chargeback through the credit card . If you booked the flight on your credit card and trip.com won’t give you a refund you’re entitled to, you can ask your bank or credit company to do a chargeback in many cases.

Other people seem to have had some luck contacting airlines directly when trip.com wouldn’t help them, but your mileage may vary with this one. The airline may well refuse to deal with you, because you have booked through a third party.

Trip.com are an awful company and no one should book with them ever . They should really go out of business for being this bad, and if there was justice in this world, they would. My advice to you is to always book directly with the airline if you can afford it. If you can’t afford it (which nowadays with crazy flight prices may well be the case), book with a company that’s based in your own country and is a member of reputable local trade associations you can turn to if anything goes wrong and the company misbehaves.

Have you had a bad experience with trip.com?

Feel free to comment below and tell your story. If you want to link to your reviews elsewhere, you are more than welcome to do that as well.

You are also more than welcome to let me know if you were considering booking with them and have changed your mind as a result of reading this post.

If you’ve had the misfortune of dealing with trip.com, you have my sympathies. I hope this page helps in some way for you to get the refund and compensation you deserve from these outright scammers.

Who are you really booking for when you book flights with Booking.com?

25 thoughts to “Is trip.com legit? Why you should never use them in 2023 (or ever)”

I was just about to book a flight to Spain through them but then I saw your initial post about how terrible they were. Thanks for saving me!

I was about to pay them for my flight but my payment failed since they were not accepting my card for some reason. As you mentioned in your article, the customer person was useless as usual. Thankfully, when I opened twitter and searched for TRIP, i came accross this article. All I could do is thank you for writing this piece. I’m getting rid of this application straightaway. Will pay extra bucks but will get the tickets booked for elsewhere. Thanks again.

Thank you for letting me know! I’m so happy to have helped protect you from this awful company.

Looks like I just dodged a bullet. Thanks for sharing your experience, I’ve not travelled in a while and it can be so hard to figure out who are reliable travel companies and who are not. I won’t be using Trip.com and I’m sorry you had such an atrocious experience with them.

I have a similar experience. I had to purchase 4 different flights to Barcelona, all cancelled at the last min in the same week. The last booking I made i didn’t get a cancel notification but when i got to check in they said i was not listed and never was issued a ticket. I was at the airport for hours, the flight departed and I got an email saying to book the same flight for the next day but it was sold out. I did get the refund and they told me since there were no longer any non stop flights JFK to BCN and the price went up significantly that it would be fine to book any flight with another airline. I made sure to call 5 different agents to make sure that this was ok, ALWAYS GET AN EMAIL. They assured me that they had spoken to their manager and that there were notes on my account saying i was good to buy this expensive flight. The next day I was happy and positive I was getting on my flight so I called back to make sure that everything was ready only for them to tell me that they can no longer pay me the difference of my flight and that I am not eligible to cancel. This flight was 1,613.80 economy flight leaving from the same airport JFK, the only difference was that it had a stop in Frankfurt. Her solution was to buy ANOTHER flight from LGA…..a diff airport, I would have been tricked again due to it departing from another location. I have been trying to get this taken care of since June and all the agents keep telling me is that they will issue a ticket with their dispute team but I am stuck with a charge for a flight I was told to buy and never used after I realized I had been scammed. I had to buy a whole new flight the next day for $900 to get to Spain and Chase has not done anything to help me even though this is a fraudulent site. I have called back recently and the agents keep telling me to drop my disputes with the bank and they will refund me but when i tell them i want it typed out in an email they say that it is not possible. I have recordings of these misleading agents but banks cannot legaly use them. I thought it was a safe site because it is linked to sky scanner and PayPal but they know what they are doing and get away with it. Do NOT book on this site I am still dealing with this 4 months later and it will ruin your trip.

Wow. The more I read about these shysters, the more disgusted I am. Seems I got off lightly compared to so many others.

I was about to book a hotel on there, which is $200 cheaper than anything else I could find on any other platform. But, I am always wary of booking anything through new or unknown websites to me, so I did some research and found tons of bad reviews and no good reviews. This wasn’t the first bad review of them I found, but yours and everyone else’s reviews do help. They saved me from potentially losing over $800, so keep it up, please!

I just had in the last 3 days a most unhelpful , frustrating horrible experience with trip. com . I will certainly NEVER ever book with them again . It cost me 3 days of vacation and precious time , that I would rather have wanted to spend with my friends

I visited my daughter in Mexico and she vooked our flights through Trip.

We flew from Ottawa to Cancun and then had a connecting flight in Cancun to Mexico. Our first flight was late by almost 2 hours so we were unable to make the second flight from Cancun to Mexico. We had to stay a night in Cancun at a hotel and rebook with another airline the next day. That added up to 850.00 $ along with the cost of the original flight.

I have been arguing with them for weeks to get the refund for the second flight, which will not make up for the cost of rebooking but it is something at least. They kept telling us that the airline said there was not a 2 hour delay in the flight. We sent them screenshots of the arrival time of our flight at the airport and other additional information supporting the delay but they kept saying that the airline had not updated their system with thise times. They told us not to contact the airline about it, which of course means I did.

After I did contact the airline and sent them the proof we had of our arrival time in Cancun with a request that they update their information my daughter was partially refunded for the flight we missed. I say partially because the have not refunded us for our baggage as of yet. They are telling me that they do not refund baggage expenses. We requested they refund our baggage as well. We would have not payed for baggage without booking a flight. They are connected. Right now we are working on a method of refund. They are telling us because they have to do this manually they need our banking information. I told my daughter to refuse to do this and insist.on a refund through her.credit card, which is where all her other refunds have gone.

My return trip from Ottawa to Cancun was cancelled by the airline. I did not bother booking another one through trip. I vooked it through an airline directly. It took a while to get the money back from trip for this flight as well.

This has been the worst travel experience that I have had. I will never use Trip again. I would have rather paid more instead of being faced with additional costs at the last minute. There also would have been less frustration and time waisted contacting them and the airlines. It was not a good start to a vacation 😕

We booked a trip to NZ from Dublin via USA as it was far cheaper to take the route. We had to change our flights due to vaccination status for USA and we’re on attempt 4 of trying to do this. I wish we had never booked with trip.com every ‘travel consultant’ you ring and speak to will book the flight you request however you’ll get an email a few hours later saying that request has been cancelled due to no flights being available. It’s extremely frustrating and the time delays on trying to book a holiday is ridiculous.

Can absolutely confirm @Trip is a scam. Upon payment for an RT flight (second leg from India) I received an email confirmation saying “Your tickets are on the way to you”. None came. I started on Twitter and 2 days ago by emailing them demanding full refund. I received a canned reply telling me I can pick up my E-tickets at the airline counter. That was the first time I was informed that it is an E-ticket. Told them they did not answer my email upon which they (of course another person) pointed me to an email I had received after I changed the date of the return flight. “In your email you will find your ticket”. There is none in the email. Still working on it …. and will shortly contact consumer protection my country. Some details I found: Skyscammer (they use the name Skyscanner) is owned by Trip and Trip is in joint venture with TripAdvisor. Go figure.

BTW, an E-ticket would be an absolute no go for me because of the validity of 72 hours of a PCR test.

Here is a follow-up. It gets even better. I have been communicating by now with three girls of the Trip Customer Bullshitting Department. More entertainment from scam house @Trip Flight was on Jan. 30, 7:10 am local time. Trip sends email ‘Booking confirmation’ on Jan. 30, 10:01 am local time. Time diff. btw. two countries 4 h 30 min. !! Distance btw two countries 4,200 miles! That makes it 2:31 pm at the place of the fight departure.

Nuthouse @Trip doubles down.

Email from Jan. 30, attached PDF states Return flight February 5! Email from Jan. 18, Flight change confirmation for Return flight March 5!!! Of course they charged money for the change.

I requested the confirmation of the company address and name of Managing Dir. and his/her email address. 3 times! This is when they finally responded to that request. Before they continued sending me the flight details and would be happy to help… yadayada.

“Ihre Tickets sind auf dem Weg zu Ihnen Liebe(r) xxx, Vielen Dank, dass Sie sich für Trip.com entschieden haben. Die Zahlung für Ihren Flug ist eingegangen.”

Ich erhielt nie Flugtickets zugesandt.

Hier ein Artikel “Is trip.com legit? Why you should never use them in 2023 (or ever)”.

I think I found out your post pretty. Actually, I am having the very same issue you have, right now. I booked the ticket on trip.com about a month ago for the flight which I will be taking in next few weeks and just last week, I am informed that the flight is cancelled by the airline. When I desperately reached out to them, they replied that there are no more flights flying in the entire week and next week. I told them I am ok with different airline to connect since I cannot miss my flight for urgent meetings. Even so, they keep saying they cannot arrange it as they are just ticket selling agents and can do nothing more. I mean why the heck I am booking through them if they cant take any responsibilities at all. I talked to several agents through customer service but no one makes effort to help. They said they cannot do a thing to help me, even if I apply for refund, it is not sure for that is decided by airline. When I asked them to check with airline for me to arrange a replacement (ultimately the airline cancelled the flight based on what trip.com said), they replied airline say cannot and they dont give me the contact or not even the name of the office the airline when I said that I will reach out to the airline myself. Now, I am trying my very best to reach out the airline directly and seek help. Some of my friends from the industry said the responsibility lies with the ticketing agent but trip.com does not even bother to have consideration for the customers. So, fo fellow travelers, make no mistake. Dont ever use trip.com and please let your society know about it. Fraud like this company should not exist in our society and I sincerely do not want any more person to face this shitty experience.

I just gave a 1-star review on TrustPilot UK about Trip.com and the Hong Kong Regal Airport Hotel. I had to change my travel plans and need to go back to London earlier. i made a request to cancel one night of hotel reservation at the hotel booked through Trip.com. I called the hotel which said I had to t go through Trip.com. The advisor at Trip.com did not ask me for any reasons and replied “We tried very hard but hotel has strict policy…”. I then emailed my reasons and produced a new flight electronic ticket. Same reply. Total waste of time and space! Didnt know Trip.com was the successor to CTrip. Avoid at all costs!!

Hi there I have very similiar horrible experiences with trip.com. I had to book ticket to HK last year July and due to issues at the airports my flight got cancelled by trip.com. Subsequently I immediately cancelled my hotel in HK (quarantine hotel) in order to receive my refund on time and also requested for a refund at trip.com. But then a couple of days later, they booked me on another flight without my confirmation and I sent them emails/called telling them that I did not confirm and that I want my refund back because the time would have been conflicting with my quarantine hotel dates and anyways I cancelled my hotel! They refused to send me refund and customer services is absolutely useless and ignoring me even though at one time they even admitted that they made a mistake! So I got my lawyer to contact them, its now been nearly 9 months and they are refusing to give me a compensation or refund! My ticket cost me 1760EUR! From what I am reading I think i have no hope to get my money back 🙁 Unfortunately it is difficult to sue them because they have no office here in Germany (only postal address and they are not responding to my lawyers official letter) My lawyer cant help me either besides using the same stupid customer service email address.

but I will try skyscanner, this is a helpful tipp. Cheers

Anybody who would ever think of booking via trip.com DON’T. You will lose your money if things dont go as planned!

Wow! What a terrible company. I don’t know how it works in Germany, but in the UK you can take a company to the small claims court and if they don’t show up, then you win by default. Maybe it’s the same in Germany? Though I guess if it were, your lawyer would know about it and tell you. In the UK they would get the official letter with the court summons and then the court date happens with or without them. You win the money and costs if they don’t bother replying, which I’m guessing is what would happen in this case.

Having an absolute nightmare with trip.com. Booked flights for a wedding costing £3045 to find out by chance my flights were non existent. I received a call at 6am from trip which made me suspicious so I called the airline directly who said there was a booking for me however it had since been cancelled. Qatar airways would not give anymore information due to booking with a 3rd party. Trip denied all knowledge. “No ma’am everything is fine, I don’t know why they would give that information”. Currently 2 months down the line with zero help from trip and my credit card now maxed from adding more flights. I have a charge back ongoing with my credit card provider but I am now receiving very threatening emails from trip. Upon look through any correspondence from them. My flights weren’t “paid” till 5 days after my transaction, no word of a cancelled flight and I have 5 different reference numbers. I would strongly recommend no one books with them. This experience has truly knocked me ill.

What a nightmare! Good thing you can do a chargeback. Let them work it out with the credit card company. I guarantee you it’s not the first time they’ve had a chargeback. And the more they get those, the more at risk they are of not being able to work with the credit card companies!

wished that I have read your post earlier. My flight got cancelled due to weather and it affected all my subsequent flights. I decided to follow their prompt to rebook my flight, and was charged ~$700 for that. After that, it turned out that the other part of the flight couldn’t get rescheduled. As a result, I had to cancel the already rescheduled flight, which cost me another ~$700. In total, I lost $1400 rescheduling fee to Trip.com for nothing.

All their customer service cared about was to say “policies say so” that they couldn’t even explain what those policies are.

Worst travel company that I’ve dealt with.

We have had the worst experience ever in our lives with trip.com. Our business class airfare has essentially doubled because we had to change dates. Now we are stuck in France because of flight cancellations affecting planes using Heathrow due to a fault with the air traffic control system and trip.com again want to charge us thousands of dollars to change our booking dates which we have to do because we can’t get from France to Heathrow to connect with our flight back to Sydney.

Thank you for your information here. I will be writing on social media warning people never to book through trip.com. EVER!!!

Trip.com is really big scam bullshit I have a terrible experienced first time entire in my life we booked round trip from Sydney to Manila we booked September 17-23,2023 then we paid it I received an email my booked it was September12–18,2023 so I panic I cancelled straight away this is really bullshit I chat how many hours from the bullshit agents and their always repetitive and same explanations and words I said I want to talk from who’s asshole manager are in charge I have my contact number agent always telling their expedite my refund I said I want my money back that’s the only savings that I have no conscience no shame no fear from God their trained wisely their fucking asshole employee how to deal with the customer when I research about their reviews and complaints mostly are really bad their big scammer I’m asking all the time my money back they said had a time frame processing for this and their always sending about my refund application number I’m really frustrated until now I don’t have a job and that asshole trip.com that I encounter it’s really bad

I am a travel agent and wanted to test Trip.com however what I found out is very interesting

1) not bonded 2) They use fake photos to sell hotel rooms 3) there Chatbot over takes live Chat with agents 4) the are not booking directly with airlines they have to use 3rd parties 5) when you catch them cheating and over charging. Including not paying for baggage you pay them for they lie and lie and lie. 6) they have even cancelled a used airline ticket.

I have all the proof including the emails and chat records. Showing their issues and they dont care. Why should they as people have paid them. And when you go to your bank and do a charge back they get upset and start crying to you about the interest.

As for the Hotel industry ask most of them they dont like dealing with them. I can give you a list of them too

They just completely ruined two of my flights- always book through the airline, do not trust this company

Is it safe to travel to France? The latest advice

T he French government has raised its terror alert to the highest possible level, “emergency”, following the terror attack in Moscow that left more than 135 people dead.

French prime minister Gabriel Attal said the decision was taken “in light of the Islamic State’s claiming responsibility for the [Moscow] attack and the threats weighing on our country”.

France’s terror threat system has three levels. The highest level is announced if there is a terrorist attack in France or overseas, or if an attack on French soil is considered to be imminent.

France was already on high alert for potential terrorist attacks, with the Paris Olympics and Paralympics due to take place in the capital this summer.

The updated terror alert comes just days before the UK Easter school holidays, when thousands of British holidaymakers will travel across the Channel for a getaway.

What is the Foreign Office advice for France?

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) France advice, which was last updated on February 20, reads: “There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. You should remain vigilant at all times.”

“Methods of attack have included knife attacks, shootings, bombings and vehicle attacks. Be vigilant in public places and follow the advice of local French authorities,” the FCDO adds.

The FCDO lists shopping centres, entertainment establishments, cultural events, public transport and places of worship as settings where “indiscriminate” terrorism attacks could take place.

Check the France FCDO page for the latest advice.

What happened in the Moscow terror attack?

On Friday, terrorists carried out an attack at the Crocus City Hall on the outskirts of Moscow, killing at least 137 and injuring 140.

Four men, all of whom are citizens of Tajikistan, have been formally charged with committing a group terrorist attack. The attack has been claimed by the Afghanistan-based Islamic State Khorasan Province (IS-K) group.

On March 7, the United States warned its citizens in Russia that extremists had “imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow” and specifically mentioned concert venues. It advised Americans to avoid large gatherings.

What should I do if I get caught up in a terrorist attack?

Britain’s counter-terrorism police gives advice on what to do in the event of an emergency . This includes to run to a place of safety: “This is better than trying to surrender or negotiate.” To hide: “It is better to hide than confront. Barricade yourself in, turn your phone to silent and use only when it is safe to do so.” And to tell: “Make sure you know the local emergency numbers in the country you are travelling to. For all EU countries call 112.”

Have there been recent terrorist attacks in France?

There have been a number of terrorist attacks in France over the past decade. In January 2015, eight cartoonists, two guests and two police officers were murdered at the offices of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo . The gunmen identified as belonging to al-Qaeda.

In November that year, in the deadliest terrorist attack in French history, 131 people were killed and 413 were injured in a series of shooting and grenade attacks at the Bataclan music venue, near the Stade de France and at several restaurants and bars across Paris. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks.

In July 2016, 86 people were killed and 434 injured in Nice after a 19-tonne cargo truck was driven into crowds during Bastille Day celebrations on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice. Again Islamic State claimed responsibility.

What if I want to cancel my trip to France?

If you have booked a package holiday to France and want to cancel your trip for any reason, contact your tour operator and they might offer flexibility with alternative dates.

But bear in mind that, because the Foreign Office has not issued any advice against travel to France, there is no guarantee that you will receive a refund, nor will you be able to claim money back with your travel insurance company.

If you have booked flights and accommodation independently, and wish to cancel your holiday, contact your travel providers as soon as possible to see if you can rearrange your plans. Note, however, that given the circumstances, it is unlikely you will receive a full refund.

You know that old saying? If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is? It applies. Heavily.

Just book with the airline and save yourself some stress.

Yes - read on;

Mytrip claims to be an IATA accredited online travel agency.

They advertise an English helpline number +44 8447747881 but it now appears to us that this is only a front for a Greek company,

Two weeks later the airline changed the first flight making it impossible to make the connection to the second.

When we were notified we immediately requested that Mytrip.com change the flights to a practicable connection.

Despite repeated emails and expensive overseas calls to the Mytrip.com ‘help line’ Iberian Airways tells us that Mytrip.com has not made any request to change the flights .

Iberia Air says that they can not change the flights because Mytrip.com has not requested the change from them.

Iberia Air says that we cannot miss the first flight which now does not exist and just get to Madrid some other way in order to get on the second flight . In other words there is no way we can use the tickets we have paid for.

Mytrip.com does not respond to any of our emails.

And furthermore, apparently an UK 844 number, which their helpline is, is a premium number which returns payment from the cost of the call to the company. (just one phone call cost us 50 euros on hold)

We are now having to find alternative means of transport, of course at greater cost due to the last minute booking.

So much for me thinking IATA accreditation signified anything. If anyone knows of any way we can seek help or contact this company the information would be greatly appreciated.?

Americans who have traveled internationally stand out in their views and knowledge of foreign affairs

Travelers line up for TSA screening at Orlando International Airport in Florida in December 2022. (Paul Hennessy/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)

Do people who travel think differently about the world? A new Pew Research Center survey suggests they do.

Americans who have traveled internationally are more interested in and knowledgeable about foreign affairs, feel closer to others around the world, and favor a more active foreign policy, according to the survey of 3,576 U.S. adults conducted in spring 2023. We also surveyed people in 23 other countries about their international travel habits.

This analysis examines international travel with a focus on Americans’ travel, including which Americans travel abroad and how their interest in the world and views of international affairs differ from others.

For this analysis, we surveyed 3,576 U.S. adults from March 20 to March 26, 2023; 3,581 U.S. adults from March 21 to March 27, 2022; and 10,606 U.S. adults from June 14 to June 27, 2021. Everyone who took part in these surveys is a member of the Center’s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the ATP’s methodology .

For non-U.S. data, this report draws on nationally representative surveys of 27,285 adults conducted from Feb. 20 to May 22, 2023. All surveys were conducted over the phone with adults in Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Surveys were conducted face-to-face in Hungary, Poland, India, Indonesia, Israel, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. In Australia, we used a mixed-mode probability-based online panel.

Here are the June 2021 survey questions and responses used in this analysis. Those for the March 2022 survey may be found here , as well as those for the March 2023 survey .

How many Americans have traveled internationally?

Roughly three-quarters of Americans (76%) have visited at least one other country, including 26% who have been to five or more. About a quarter (23%) have not traveled internationally, though most in this group say they would if they had the opportunity.

Related:  How experience with international travel varies across 24 countries

To analyze how Americans’ travel experiences relate to their attitudes on other questions, we placed people into three categories:

  • Globe-trotters have traveled to at least five other countries. About a quarter of the U.S. public (26%) falls into this category.
  • Casual travelers have traveled to between one and four other countries. Half of Americans fall into this category.
  • Nontravelers have never left the United States. This category includes 23% of Americans.

Compared with Americans, people in many European nations are more likely to have traveled to five or more other countries. For instance, 88% of Swedes have done so.

A map showing that Americans are less likely than Europeans to have visited 5 or more countries.

However, international travel is much less common in many middle-income nations. It is strongly correlated with a nation’s gross domestic product per capita. (For more on international travel and views about global engagement, read “Attitudes on an Interconnected World.” )

Who travels internationally?

A horizontal stacked bar chart showing that U.S. ‘globe-trotters’ are more likely to be older, have higher incomes and more education.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, older people are more likely than younger people to have traveled internationally. Americans ages 65 and older are more than twice as likely as adults under 30 to fall into our globe-trotter category (37% vs. 17%).

Income is even more strongly related to travel than age. Two-thirds of upper-income Americans have traveled to at least five countries, compared with 9% of Americans with lower incomes.

Similarly, Americans with a postgraduate degree are far more likely to be globe-trotters than those with a high school education or less (59% vs. 10%).

Residents of suburban and urban areas generally have more international travel experience than people who live in rural areas.

There are no significant partisan differences when it comes to international travel: 26% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents qualify as globe-trotters, as do 28% of Republicans and GOP leaners.

Do travelers know more about the world?

A bar chart showing that Americans who’ve traveled widely abroad have greater interest in foreign affairs.

Globe-trotters are especially likely to say they are interested in foreign affairs and follow international news. Casual travelers, in turn, are more likely than nontravelers to do so.

Globe-trotters are also the most knowledgeable about international affairs. In 2022, we conducted an international affairs quiz , asking Americans 12 questions related to international news. On average, globe-trotters got 8.2 of the 12 questions correct, compared with 6.4 for casual travelers and 4.2 for nontravelers.

Is international travel related to views of global engagement?

A bar chart showing that ‘globe-trotters’ prioritize U.S. engagement in world affairs and value compromise with other countries.

International travel experience is also linked to Americans’ views about international affairs and their feelings of connection to other people around the world.

When asked which comes closest to their view, 57% of globe-trotters say the U.S. should be active in world affairs, while 43% say the U.S. should pay less attention to problems in other countries and concentrate on problems at home. In contrast, most casual travelers and nontravelers say the U.S. should focus on problems at home.

In all three groups, at least half of respondents say that when the U.S. is making foreign policy, it should take other countries’ interests into account – even if that means making compromises. But globe-trotters are especially likely to hold that view.

Globe-trotters are also particularly likely to say they feel close to people around the world, with 42% saying so. By comparison, 34% of casual travelers and 30% of nontravelers say this.

my trip is it safe

My family is looking for beginner surf areas and will be traveling July/August. What are the best areas for this in these months? Also, safety is a concern, we've been to Jamaica and Bermuda and preferred the safety that we felt in Bermuda over Jamaica, where does Barbados fit? We've also rented a vrbo/airbnb in Bermuda and were safe during our stay and using public transport to travel the island, is Barbados similar? Lastly, I saw reports of Dengue fever and was concerned, is this truly an issue?

Thanks all for your help!

Hi. I can answer some of your questions.

There are many vrbos and AirBnB in Barbados, you should be able to find something for your family.

As far as ‘safe’, that can mean different things to people. We have been travelling to Barbados for many years, and initially with our son who was 10 at the time. We rented a vehicle sometimes and other times used the local buses, with no problems at all.

Our son is a lover of the sea and there were many times he stayed at the beach by himself for a few hours without any problems.

As with any place we have visited we didn’t wear expensive jewellery or flash a lot of money around.

Barbadians are extremely friendly people and will treat anyone with respect as long as they are treated accordingly.

As far as surfing, there are a few surfing schools that have an excellent reputation with beginners.

The south coast beaches would be more appropriate such as Accra/Rockley Beach and Dover Beach .

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

I first started traveling solo internationally long before my career as a professional travel writer began, back in college when protecting my belongings involved keeping a death grip on my airline tickets (remember cardstock tickets?) and cashier’s checks. I remember nervously walking around London — wearing my backpack in front, of course — and assuming everyone on the Tube was trying to figure out where I had stashed my cash. I learned from that trip that traveling in fear is no fun as a solo traveler (or as any sort of traveler, for that matter), and it’s definitely not necessary. What is necessary is being aware of your surroundings and making smart decisions, like not walking alone through dimly lit passageways and not letting others know you’re traveling alone.   More than eight dozen countries later — and hundreds of stories filed from hotel rooms and cafes around the world — and I can now attribute much of my safety success while on the road to being smart, being aware, and being prepared with gear that protects my personal info (like these data blocking charging cables ).  You’ll still often see me traveling with my backpack on my front while riding on crowded Metros around Europe where I live … only now that backpack is equipped with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-blocking technology. Digital theft is a growing problem around the world, and not just in crowded cities, where a simple skim (i.e., scan) of your bag could give thieves access to your name, address, credit card numbers, and expiration dates. For that reason, I always use an RFID-blocking wallet or bag to keep my credit cards and IDs un-skimmable and recommend travelers do the same. From bags that are meant to be worn on the front to bags that are both slice- and skim-resistant, these are my favorite RFID-blocking bags for anyone looking to protect themselves while traveling.

Travelon Anti-Theft Classic Essential Messenger Bag

This roomy messenger is lightweight but durable, and by durable I mean slash-proof, cut-proof, and equipped with locking hardware to strap it down while at a restaurant or café. Travelon makes one of the top anti-theft bags out there, and this bag doubles as a wallet with built-in card holders and zipper pockets, all RFID-blocking, of course.

Daitet Money Belt Bag

Travelers love this RFID-blocking money belt for “ peace of mind ” and that it’s easy to conceal when they’re on the go, saying it’s “ almost unnoticeable under a T-shirt ” and is “super light, durable, and works great.” Coming in at just $10 thanks to a 50 percent off sale, it’s also a steal. And Amazon shoppers have taken note, with more than 2,000 selling in the past month alone.

Falanko Laptop Backpack

The RFID-blocking pocket is large enough to protect a wallet, a phone, and a passport all at once. I also love that this backpack is waterproof, so it can also protect a laptop against spills or unexpected weather. The built-in charging port and luggage strap come in handy, too.

Baggallini Essential Crossbody Bag

Amazon reviewers love this crossbody’s multiple zipper pocket options, but I love how easy it is to keep clean. The entire bag is machine washable, which does not hinder the RFID-blocking capabilities in any way.

Sherpani Geo, Anti-Theft Tote Bag

Although this anti-theft bag is smaller than the average tote, it’s great for storing a 10-inch tablet and perfect for protecting your digital identity with a spacious RFID-blocking pocket built right in. Even better, you can wear it as a tote, a crossbody, or a shoulder bag.

Kroser Laptop Backpack

There are no less than 13 pockets in this TSA-friendly backpack. Some are mesh, some are zippered, but the most important ones are RFID-blocking. Reviewers obviously love its functionality, but many also mention how comfy it is to wear.

Nautica RFID-Blocking Mini Crossbody

The RFID-blocking pocket in this crossbody is almost as big as the entire bag itself. This also comes with an interior zipper coin pocket as well as an exterior zippered pocket, but I love that it can be worn as a wristlet or a crossbody depending on which strap you use.

Travelon Anti-Theft Metro Convertible Small Crossbody

Don’t let the size deceive you — this durable bag is surprisingly spacious. It comes with Travelon’s signature 5-point anti-theft security system (i.e., slash-resistant strap, lock down straps, locking compartments, an RFID-blocking organizer, slash-resistant mesh), and it can be worn as either a waist pack or a crossbody.

Wrangler RFID-Blocking Crossbody Purse

Simply thread your belt through the belt loop for a hands-free RFID-blocking bag that’s great for travel. Designed to resemble an old-school camera bag, this petite purse is perfect for stashing the essentials, and keeping those essentials safe no matter where you go.

Travelon Anti-theft Classic Sling Bag

Amazon has this popular travel sling on sale for up to half off right now in select colors. It’s an organized traveler’s dream bag, with multiple pockets and specific RFID-blocking card slots and passport pockets. I love that it has the versatility of a sling with the functionality of a backpack.

S-Zone Duffel Bag

Even without the RFID-blocking zippered pocket — which is huge, by the way, at 12.6 inches long — this bag is one of my favorites to recommend for travel due to its smart design. This anti-theft duffel can hold way more than you’d expect and opens like a suitcase to keep things organized.

Bagsmart Laptop Bag

Leave it to Bagsmart to come up with one of the smartest laptop bags on the market. This TSA-friendly briefcase is fully padded for laptop protection and comes with a secret anti-theft RFID-blocking pocket for digital protection. It’s also water-resistant and big enough for a 15.6-inch laptop.

AM Sea Blue Laptop Tote Bag

This unassuming floral tote is surprisingly techy, with an external USB charging port and earphone jack on one side and an RFID-blocking zippered pocket on the other. The bag is great for toting a laptop, but it’s also a perfect carry-on, with a full zipper closure for added security between gates and in flight.

Vera Bradley Mini Hipster Crossbody Purse

I view this bag as more of a wearable wallet, with built-in RFID-blocking card slips and an ID window taking away the need for packing a bulky wallet. It has multiple zippered pockets and pouches for extra organization, and the small size makes it easy to stash in a larger carry-on or tote.

Vankean Expandable Waterproof Laptop Briefcase

This bag had me at “expandable.” It’s small, but mighty, with anti-theft features that include multiple RFID pockets. Aside from being expandable, I like that it’s waterproof, TSA-compliant, and holds up to a 17-inch laptop.

Samsonite Classic 2.0 RFID Crossbody Bag

Samsonite loyalists will love this classic crossbody, especially because it has a solid RFID-blocking lining that protects against skimming. Multiple pockets and a sturdy shoulder strap keep it ideal for travel, and the main compartment is roomy enough to even hold up to a 10.1-inch tablet.  Love a great deal? Things to know before visiting the Gili Islands

Apr 21, 2024 • 6 min read

Boat at Sunset in Gili Islands, Indonesia

Whichever island you're on, head to the west coast for the best sunset views © Marcos Welsh / Getty Images

As far as tiny, picturesque islands go, the Gili Islands have it all and then some. Glassy waters full of colorful marine life, local tradition and culture, a rowdy nightlife scene, and also plenty of places to completely relax under the sun – it's the real deal.

These three islands – Gili Trawangan , Meno and Air – are generally safe and fairly easy to navigate. As a first-time visitor though, you'll want a quick travel guide on a few specifics regarding trip planning, respectful etiquette, and safety before you arrive.

Take note of these 11 tips for a smooth journey around the Gili Islands.

people waiting for a horse drawn cart on Gili Islands indonesia

1. Pack light, or at least skip the giant suitcase

We've been there and witnessed it: giant suitcases piled into the back of the Gili boats, later being lugged around on dusty laneways by sweaty, regretful travelers under the hot sun. Trust us on this one: packing light is the way to go for the Gili Islands. Either leave your suitcase at accommodations in Bali or use a service such as Bali Store Luggage to take care of it while you're island hopping. Between the logistics of getting on and off the Gili boats, plus the fact that the Gili Islands don't have any motorized vehicles – you're much better off bringing only what's comfortable to carry on your back.

2. Decide how to split your time between the three islands (or just wing it)

Whether you enjoy a quick weekend getaway or slowly move through all three islands over the course of a week, deciding how to split your time in advance is advantageous. Each island brings a different personality, with Gili Trawangan being notorious for parties and nightlife. Gili Meno, in the middle, draws a more laidback crowd – those seeking tranquility (and a decent number of honeymooners). To the east, Gili Air falls somewhere in the middle of the chill scale, where it's easy to bliss out in silence or get social at one of the island's many cheerful beach bars.

Even though the islands are small, you can have a completely different experience depending on where you go and what you do. Plan accordingly.

3. Team up with other travelers to share boats between islands

It's possible to take public boats between all three Gili Islands, but they don't run very frequently – usually just a couple times per day – and plans are subject to change. If you're looking to travel on the fly, or completely on your own schedule, the best way to move between the Gili Islands is to team up with other travelers and share a private boat transfer. Walk down to the port and chat up some of the friendly boatmen waiting for your business, preferably with a friend or two to split the cost. Expect to pay around 300,000Rp for the entire boat for a one-way, depending on your negotiation abilities.

4. Dress and behave respectfully

While you explore the Gili Islands, you might encounter a few signs that say "no swimwear in the village" – or simply a picture of a bikini with a big red no symbol on top of it. Most residents of the Gili Islands are Muslim, and dressing modestly is important for traveling respectfully. There's no issue rocking swim trunks or a bikini when you're actually at the beach – but cover up when you're heading inland, especially when passing through residential areas. Keep a big t-shirt and sarong in your bag, and you'll be good to go.

5. Check the calendar for any holidays

There are two holidays to be aware of, both bring different experiences in the Gili Islands: Ramadan, a Muslim holiday, and Nyepi, a Balinese holiday. Ramadan is usually around March or April where people fast from sunrise to sunset each day for a month. You can still travel to the Gili Islands, but be advised that some businesses will close earlier and parties are limited during this time. During Nyepi, Bali's day of silence which typically falls the first or second week of March, the entire island shuts down – leading many travelers to head to the Gili Islands where businesses remain open. This can make things pretty busy for two or three days over Nyepi.

6. Lock up your bicycle when you're not using it

You won't find any motorized vehicles on the Gili Islands, where the best method of transportation is either via foot or bicycle. Petty theft isn't all that common – but locking your bike whenever you're not using it is a best practice just in case. Insurance for bike theft isn't really a thing here, so if someone were to roam off with it, you'd be on the hook for covering the cost. Most folks simply put the lock around their tire rather than fastening it to a stationary object.

7. Always drink purified water

Tap water is not safe for consumption across Indonesia so always only drink water you’ve either purified yourself; you have purchased in a sealed bottle; or have refilled your reusable from a clean water source to stay hydrated. A lot of people brush their teeth with the tap water without experiencing any issues, but if you're really concerned, use bottled water for that too.

8. Watch out for mosquitos

Catching dengue fever is the biggest risk from mosquito bites here – not to mention uncomfortable itchiness. Mosquitos are a year-round experience in the Gili Islands, slightly less so during the dry season from roughly June until October. The best way to prevent bites or mosquito-induced illness is by preparing yourself with bug spray, especially around dusk.

9. Drugs are illegal in Indonesia

You might've heard stories of magic mushrooms in the Gilis from other travelers – and it's true, several beachside cafes openly advertise the sale of magic mushrooms despite the fact that Indonesia has strong anti-drug laws. It's not uncommon to get offers for "magic shakes" or mushrooms while walking on the street, either. Do beware: Indonesia has extremely strict laws against illicit substances, including mushrooms.

Intoxication or possession is punishable by lengthy imprisonment (or worse!). According to Indonesia's tourism board , "Possession is punishable by 4 to 12 years of imprisonment. There is also IDR 800 million to 8 billion (US$89,600 to US$896,000) worth of fines."

Beer at sunset on Pulau Island Gili Meno

10. Stick to beer and wine if you want to drink

Throughout the years, there have been countless reports of travelers in Indonesia becoming ill due to methanol poisoning from alcoholic spirits. The consumption of this illegal tainted alcohol – which has occurred even in fancy, upscale resorts – can cause severe illness, blindness, or even death. Methanol-tainted alcohol is typically the result of cost cutting, oftentimes far earlier in the supply chain before bars and restaurants have any say in the matter. The safest way to get a buzz is by drinking beer or wine, so load up on the Bintang beers or get champagne tipsy all day long.

11. Head west for sunset

When the fiery sun begins to descend closer to the horizon, make your way west. Regardless of whether you're on Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, or Gili Air – the best sunset views are on the west coast, accompanied by views of Bali's towering Gunung Agung volcano off in the distance. It's the best way to slip into the evening, typically accompanied by sherbet-colored hues in the sky and good vibes.

Date of experience : 06 April 2024
