Anita Baker Announces First Full Tour Since 1995 to Celebrate 40th Anniversary of 'The Songstress'
"Looking forward to some crazy, lovely, hang time with my fans. Gonna bring some new music & special guests, too," the "Caught Up in the Rapture" performer reportedly wrote in a press release
Some dreams come true — Anita Baker is returning to the road!
On Thursday, the eight-time Grammy winner announced she'll be embarking on a concert tour of North American arena venues next year to celebrate the 40th anniversary of her debut album, The Songstress .
"2023 Coming Straight to YOU [...] This time...With *My Own* catalog," wrote Baker, 64, on Twitter alongside the tour announcement — which arrives just over two months after she finally gained control of her master recordings following a period of time when she did not have ownership of them.
The R&B icon won't be alone on the road, as she said in a press release, per Rolling Stone , "Looking forward to some crazy, lovely, hang time with my fans. Gonna bring some new music & special guests, too."
Kicking off Feb. 11, 2023 at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida, the tour will see Baker perform a total of 15 shows in cities including Atlanta, New Orleans, Chicago, Detroit, Dallas and Los Angeles before wrapping the leg at the Oakland Arena in Oakland, California on Dec. 23 — just in time for her to hopefully perform tracks from her 2005 album Christmas Fantasy .
Tickets for the tour go on sale starting Thursday, Nov. 17 at 10 a.m. local time, and more information can be found at Baker's Ticketmaster page.
Originally released in 1983, The Songstress launched Baker's career and spawned four singles — "Angel," "You're the Best Thing Yet," "No More Tears" and "Feel the Need" — and reached widespread success once it was reissued via Elektra Records in 1991.
Earlier this year, Baker documented how she was attempting to take back control of her music, as she asked fans to not stream or purchase her songs until she could do so.
"Miraculously... i have out-lived *ALL, of my Artists Contracts They no longer 'Own,' My Name & Likeness. And, by Law...30 yr old, Mstrs are 2B Returned, 2 Me Unfortunately, They're gonna make me Fight 4 it. I'm Prepared, 2 do that. Please Dont advertise/buy them," she wrote in a March tweet .
Weeks later, Baker then discussed her predicament once more in a tweet, where she referenced Taylor Swift's own battle to gain control of her masters. "Her creations bought & sold Again & Again, wouldnt even let her do *A Buy Out*... Taylor Swift *re-recording, her Catalog/Taylor's Version. The GoodFight Go... Gurrrrl," she tweeted at the time.
On Sept. 5, Baker announced she'd regained control of her masters by tweeting a photograph of some of her various albums released over the years alongside the text, "All My Children Are Coming Home [...] Impossible Things Happen ... Every. Single. Day. Gratefully."
The following day, Swift, 31, quote-tweeted the "Sweet Love" singer's post, writing , "What a beautiful moment, CONGRATULATIONS ANITA!!"
The upcoming anniversary concerts will mark Baker's first full tour since 1995, as she's only played one-off shows, residencies and a small series of farewell concerts in the interim.

What actually happened at Anita Baker's viral Houston concert?
M aybe concert-goers have been spoiled by the flawless choreography of Beyoncé's latest tour or the four-hour deep dive into the different Eras of Taylor Swift's career this year, but when you're paying hundreds per ticket, at the very least you should expect a cogent and ultimately enjoyable evening out. Last week, R&B legend Anita Baker didn't seem to live up to those expectations as she took the stage at Toyota Center in Downtown Houston, with many in attendance posting videos of her confronting fans from the stage and calling for "security" to have people removed throughout the show.
Let's take it from the top: Baker, 65, is a soulful singer-songwriter who helped to define the radio format popularly known as "quiet storm," specializing in melodic, lush ballads with romantic themes and, typically, keyboard-heavy arrangements. Between her debut album The Songstress in 1983 and Rhythm of Love in 1994, Baker scored twelve top-10 R&B hits; five of those records were top-40 pop hits, too, including "Sweet Love," "Caught Up in the Rapture," "Same Ole Love (365 Days a Year)," "Giving You the Best That I Got" and "Just Because."
Baker's last major studio album was 2004's My Everything , and she hadn't traveled on a full tour since 1995. However, despite a lack of new hits, the singer's stock has been rising over the past several years. Like fellow legendary singer Dionne Warwick , Baker has gained a following on social media for being a no-nonsense but warm-hearted elder figure, lovingly given the title "auntie" by fans. Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and Houston native Jalen Hurts expressed so much affection for Baker's music that his team invited her to sing "The Star-Spangled Banner" ahead of its 2023 NFC Championship Game victory at Lincoln Financial Field.
So this year, Baker went back out on tour, stopping everywhere from New Orleans and Memphis to Detroit and Chicago before headlining two nights in Texas. Given that a scheduled 2019 performance in Sugar Land was ultimately canceled, many Bayou City fans were hungry to see and hear Baker perform live for the first time years, and afterwards many on X thanked Baker for coming to Houston and praised her for putting on a good show .
Then the backlash began. Most prominently, TikTok user @icemamiiii had some harsh words regarding Baker's time on stage, claiming Baker only performed four songs and never belted out "Sweet Love," the R&B legend's biggest hit, which reached No. 8 on the U.S. charts in 1987. That TikTok has since been deleted, but the same user produced video of Baker asking fans to turn off their cameras during the outro of "Same Ole Love." Due to the angle and the lighting, and yes—because Baker doesn't seem to care how she gets her message across—the video comes off as chaotic.
"Turn off the camera, baby! I don't know who you are, move back!" she seems to almost sing in the video.
TikTok user @thevalenciagilford posted her own video of Baker calling for "security" between the beats of her performing "Giving You the Best That I Got." This seemed to happen all night . As for "Sweet Love," Baker did perform it, according to multiple videos from TikTok users posted from the Toyota Center crowd. One fan seemingly proud of Baker's show came to her defense on the social platform X, reading off Baker's set list from her Houston show to rebuff some of the criticism and prove she performed about a dozen songs that night.
Still, the negative reviews dominated the conversation, as some on social media claimed there was "a mass exodus" of fans after just a few songs. One X user says much of their row cleared out halfway through the concert simply because Baker didn't deliver, including not remembering words from her songs and acting erratically. These critical reviews seem to be in line with frustrations of fans in other cities , including reports Baker has shown up more than two hours late to multiple shows. And earlier this year, she dropped opener Babyface after his fans allegedly "cyberbullied" her.
Yes, ticket prices are far too high —starting at $70 and chasing upwards of $200 to see Baker in Houston—and the simple act of securing concert seats has become so cannibalistic, that as a result fans are likely holding performers to even higher expectations. On top of that, some fans seem to think as if they have the power to impact the show , resulting in greater tension between performer and concert-goer. Add it up, and factor in a singer who hasn't been on a tour in three decades and maybe shouldn't be headlining right out of the gate, and you have situations like last week at Toyota Center.
If there's a silver lining out of this, it's that Baker made nice two nights later in Dallas . Maybe we should all just buy a copy of Baker's 1987 album Rapture and spend an evening indulging in the songstress' talents from the comforts of our own homes.

Anita baker accused of getting testy with houston crowd during live show, anita baker accused of bickering w/ houston crowd ... during live tour stop.
Anita Baker 's latest live performance is catching a little heat after she apparently got testy with the audience out in Texas -- parts of which were captured on video.
The legendary crooner was doing a show in Houston's Toyota Center Friday night and playing to a pretty solid-sized audience ... but at certain points during the gig, AB appears to have gotten into it a bit with some folks down in the front row.
There are 2 videos, in particular, that are circulating online right now -- one shows Anita telling some people right below her near the stage to stop recording ... in the middle of a song.
I was there so imma speak. People kept rushing the stage and interrupting her and security was just letting it happen. I would’ve done the same thing bc they were messing up other people’s experience who paid money too. It was a sold out arena she can’t just let everyone run up — André Marcel Harris, MSW (@andreharris89) December 17, 2023 @andreharris89
There's another moment where Anita could be seen/heard asking for security to boot folks.
Overall, this seems to have left a bad taste in people's mouths -- with some online complaining that Anita was more concerned with arguing with a select few ticket-buyers than doing the best job she could onstage. Others claimed she seemed to miss some lyrics ... and alleged her performance, overall, was relatively short-lived and somewhat sloppy.
Now, there's a good handful of people defending Anita ... saying the folks in the front row were, in fact, acting up and testing AB. Others said the performance, at large, was great.
Of course, the larger backdrop to this is the Babyface feud she was in earlier this year while on the road -- during which she got into it with both him and his fans in the Twitter-sphere.
Anita's got another show tonight in Dallas, then she comes to Cali next for her final two. Here's hoping she can go out with a bang -- sounds like the tour's been a little bumpy.
