Why Adelaide Gaol Closed its Doors in 1988

The closure of the Adelaide Gaol was a pivotal moment in the evolution of South Australia’s correctional system, marking a change to ensure the dignity and welfare of prisoners. In 1988, the decision was made to close the Adelaide Gaol primarily due to the lack of adequate conditions inside the facility.

Outdated Facilities

One of the prime reasons for the closure of Adelaide Gaol was that over the years it was never adequately updated and the cells lacked essential amenities, such as heating, cooling, running water, and proper toilet facilities. These conditions fell significantly below modern standards for humane incarceration.

Cost Prohibitive Upgrades

The need for comprehensive upgrades to bring the Gaol up to contemporary correctional standards was apparent. However, the cost of implementing these upgrades was deemed exorbitant and could not be economically justified.

Relocation for Improved Conditions

In the pursuit of ensuring the wellbeing of imprisoned individuals and complying with evolving correctional standards, prisoners were transferred to more suitable facilities at Yatala and Mobilong. Both of which were far better equipped to provide safe and humane living conditions.

Preserving History

While the Adelaide Gaol’s role in incarceration has come to an end, its historical significance lives on. Today, the Adelaide Gaol stands as a preserved relic, offering visitors a window into the past and a chance to reflect on the evolution of our justice system.

In March 1994, Adelaide experienced a devastating act of domestic terrorism when the National Crime Authority (NCA) building was bombed. A powerful explosion destroyed the building and killed Detective Sergeant Geoffrey Bowen, an NCA officer. Several other people were injured in the blast.

The investigation into the bombing revealed that it was a targeted attack against law enforcement. The case remained unsolved for many years, but in 2012, a man named Domenic Perre was arrested and charged in connection with the bombing. He was convicted in 2013, marking a significant development in the case.

It was a sunny Australia Day, and the children were seen at the beach by several witnesses.

However, the children never returned home, and an extensive search was launched. Despite a massive police investigation and widespread media coverage, no trace of the Beaumont children was ever found. Their disappearance shocked the nation and led to significant changes in child safety practices in Australia.

Can you accommodate for dietary requirements?

Absolutely! We can cater for most dietary needs for no additional charge, including gluten free, vegan, and vegetarian diets. Customers can also outline any allergies we should be aware of at the time of booking. We also do our best to cater for pregnancy when requested, we recommend pescatarians book as vegetarians.

Do I need to pay for food on the day?

All food, wine and tastings will be covered in the cost of your experience, including picnic supplied for your perfect picnic spot.

When will I get my clues?

You’ll get your clues via email a day or two before your picnic, after which you'll have all your clues, games and puzzles ready to go! Please note, you'll need a mobile phone with internet access the day of your experience.

What is the difference between a picnic date and a picnic with friends?

Our Mystery Picnic Dates are designed to be a unique couples day out. While the experiences are similar, for groups of two or more teens or adults, we recommend booking a Mystery Picnic with Friends.

What does the premium option include?

Our premium mystery picnics include everything in our All Inclusive experience, along with some added extras. These include a bonus stop along the way, a hot drink, and a delicious specialty snack. Please note that a bottle of wine is not included as standard unless a wine add on has been selected.

What will the day look like?

You can decide your specific start time and the pace for the day! We recommend getting started around 11am to give yourself enough time without feeling like you have to rush through the day. Please note some routes may have a slightly different recommendation specific to that route and the vendor opening hours. All you need to do is follow your clues which will lead the way!

How long does the experience go for?

We’ve designed it to be roughly a 3-4 hour round trip, including enjoying your picnic. But you can definitely take longer than this if you want to go on a few detours to explore the region a bit more!

What is your rescheduling and cancellation policy?

As we pre-plan and book you in for your stops along the way, we need 3 business days notice if you wish to reschedule or cancel your experience.

What is your wet weather policy?

Some of our destinations can cater for an indoor picnic spot, just ask one of our friendly concierges. But if you'd prefer to reschedule your picnic due to rain we'll need 3 business days notice, so we encourage you to keep an eye on the forecast in rainier seasons.

Is parking included?

Please note any parking costs are not included in the price of the experience.

Is Transport Included?

Transport throughout the experience is not included, so be sure to check whether your experience is designed for walking or driving.

Do I need to know the area well to solve the clues?

No local knowledge is required to solve the clues on the day. Whether you know the region well, or it's your first visit, the experience is designed to guide you discover new things during your visit!

Where do I eat my picnic?

We will always have a picnic spot planned for you; be that a picnic area, a park or even a winery. Please note that picnic set up is not included so you are welcome to find a spot and settle in to eat. We also recommend bringing along a picnic blanket if you have one, in case you decide to settle on the grass.
