There’s no surer sign that fall is coming than seeing pumpkins everywhere—whether used in fancy coffee drinks, recipes or just as decorations, pumpkins are the ubiquitous symbol of autumn. Fall fun is the name of the game at Goebbert’s (which boasts locations in South Barrington and Pingree Grove), where you can not only pick up all the pumpkins your heart desires, but also send your kids down the giant pumpkin slide or check out the exotic petting zoo (seriously, there’s a giraffe). Before you head home, get lost in the corn maze and check out the pumpkin-eating dinosaur.
2. County Line Orchard
- price 1 of 4
Driving time from Chicago: 50 minutes
This massive farm is an autumnal wonderland, complete with a pumpkin patch, apple orchard and sprawling corn maze. Check out the bee yurts, where hundreds of bees work and live, or book your own campfire. The little ones will adore the Kids Farm, complete with pygmy goats and piggies. Best of all, you can bring home bags of fresh-baked breads, pies, doughnuts and other fall treats from the orchard's premises.
3. Jonamac Apple Orchard
Driving time from Chicago: 70 minutes
You'll find more than apples at this orchard just south of nearby Malta, Illinois. Cruise the 12-acre pumpkin patch, which opens up in late-September, in search of a perfectly plump squash before hitting up the Cider House, where you can sample apple wines and hard cider. If any teens tagged along, pay $17 to check out the haunted corn maze, which is open Friday and Saturday night (and, being somewhat spooky, recommended for ages 13 and older). Younger kids are welcome to check out the corn crib play barn.
4. Didier Farms
Driving time from Chicago: 45 minutes
There’s a reason this lively farm in Lincolnshire, Illinois calls its fall pumpkin-picking season Pumpkinfest. Of course, there's a huge selection of unique, unusual gourds to choose from—perfect for porch jack-o’-lanterns.

There’s no need to get into the car to make it to Jack’s Pumpkin Pop Up for Chicago residents; instead, just hop on the L train or a bus. The annual pop up doesn’t take place on a farm or an orchard, instead it’s located just outside of Goose Island. 25 Best Pumpkin Patches in the Chicago Area (2023)
Chicagoans love fall for many reasons, but one of the most popular activities during this season is visiting pumpkin patches. Whether you’re looking for the perfect pumpkin to carve, a fun family outing, or just a scenic drive in the countryside, there are plenty of pumpkin patches around Chicago to choose from.
Here are some of the best pumpkin patches in the Chicagoland area and what makes them stand out!
1. Goebbert’s Pumpkin Patch
Website | Pingree Grove and South Barrington
Goebbert’s Pumpkin Patch is definitely one of the biggest pumpkin farms, and they actually have two locations, one in Pingree Grove and one in South Barrington. We’ve been to the Pingree Grove location, and there is so much to do! We actually chose this location because of its proximity to Deicke Park, a truly perfect playground, but the pumpkin patch actually has a fantastic playground!
You could easily spend the whole day there. We are a “get-there-right-when-it opens” family and that was a mistake here.
While we had a great time, a lot of the food vendors weren’t open, and some of the attractions, like the famous pumpkin eating dinosaur, weren’t operating yet. I’d recommend aiming to get here at 11:30 or later, and plan to spend multiple hours here.
They also sell smash burgers, tacos, tamales, pretzels, and they have a variety of adult beverages. It’s truly fun for the whole family, and Goebbert’s will definitely become a family tradition.
*Tip* If you buy tickets in advance, pay attention to which location you purchased the tickets for. They say they won’t offer refunds if you show up at the wrong location, and you won’t be admitted. Also, kids 2 and under are FREE. I didn’t realize this, and they’ve actually been very helpful refunding the ticket for my 1-year-old son.
Here are just SOME of the activities at Goebbert’s:
- camel rides
- train rides
- straw bales in a maze for small kids
- a haunted house
- a giant pumpkin slide

So you’ve got your jack-o-lanterns and other decorative pumpkins taken care of. Now let’s dig into some pumpkin foods! More than 90% of the nation’s canning pumpkins grow in Illinois. In Morton, a town just southeast of Peoria, 82% of the world’s pumpkin is canned – earning it the self-claimed label of “Pumpkin Capital of the World.” Learn from Illinois pumpkin farmer Mikaya Huggins about the different kinds of pumpkins for eating, plus how to pick out the best pumpkins for carving.
It’s safe to say Illinois farmers know a thing or two about pumpkins – including how to eat them! Try this festive recipe for Mini Pumpkin Pie Jack-o-Lanterns.
INGREDIENTS
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup LIBBY’s 100% pure pumpkin
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- ½ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
- 2/3 cup (5 fluid-ounce can) NESTLE CARNATION Evaporated Lowfat 2% milk
- 2 tablespoons COFFEE-MATE natural bliss vanilla flavor all-natural coffee creamer
- ½ cup NESTLE TOLL HOUSE semi-sweet chocolate morsels, divided
- PREHEAT oven to 350° F.
- UNROLL pie crust on a floured surface. Cut out 24 pumpkins from crust using a 3-inch pumpkin-shaped cookie cutter or 3-inch round cookie cutter. You may need to gather scraps into a ball, roll with a rolling pin and cut pumpkins. Gently press pumpkins into mini muffin tins.
- BEAT egg in a large bowl. Stir in pumpkin, sugar and pumpkin pie spice. Gradually stir in evaporated milk and Coffee-mate natural bliss Creamer.
- SPOON about 1 tablespoon filling into each mold.
- BAKE for 16 to 18 minutes or until filling is slightly puffed and set.
- COOL in molds for 1 hour; refrigerate for 2 hours.
- TO DECORATE: Use 2 chocolate morsels for eyes. For the mouth, place remaining morsels in small, heavy-duty resealable plastic bag. Microwave on HIGH (100%) power for 20 seconds; knead until smooth. If needed, warm for a few more seconds. Snip tiny corner from bag and squeeze to drizzle onto mini pies.

(Occasionally misspelled "Bengston" or "Bengston's") A visitor writes on October 25, 2009: "I will agree this place is OVERLY commercialized..I have been here once before, and while it is "nice", it is ridiculously overpriced..I mean to pay $30.00 (could be a little more) just for myself, husband and daughter to walk THRU THE DOOR, not including the prices of pumpkins or other things..it's ridiculous..There are plenty of pumpkin patches in the chicagoland area with nearly the same amentities that don't charge an entrance fee anywhere near to that magnitude, or don't charge an entrance fee at all..Bengtston's Pumpkin Patch is WAY overpriced..save your money for the actual pumpkins or other things you want to buy and not ridiculous profits into their own pockets." A visitor writes on October 06, 2009: "I live behind this farm - it has changed alot in the last 10 years - it is now very commercial and expensive. They haven't had a u-pick section in years, they no longer grow their own pumpkins at all, they are shipped in. The "hay-rides" don't have any hay-its just a tractor pulled people-mover. A visitor writes on February 17, 2009: "I absolutely love this place... They have tons of stuff here like a hayride that takes you out to the pumpkin patch, a haunted barn, a fun barn, a halloween shop, pig races, a corn maze, many animated displays, rides, food, a pumpkin launcher, pony rides, a petting zoo, fake cows you can milk, and more. It is definitely the most popular pumpkin farm in the Cook County area and was even voted the best pumpkin farm in the chicagoland area. I have been going here with my family for close to 20 years now and it is honestly one of my favorite places in the world. There is a wide variety of activities and it is just a wonderful atmosphere(although it does get very crowded at times). I love watching the animated scenes and the pig races are also entertaining. The haunted barn has some really cool scenes as well. The fun barn is great for younger kids." A visitor writes on July 17, 2008: "Bengston's is very commercial. While there may be some u-pick pumpkins mainly there are just big piles of pumpkins that we doubted were grown there. If you are looking for an old fashioned lazy farm atmosphere this is not it. It is just an expensive mechanical mayhem. My family and I were very disappointed with our visit to pick apples. We were each charged a "field fee" of $3 a person PLUS the cost of our apples. We had to pay $12 before we even picked an apple! My husband was so outraged he wanted to leave but we had already promised our 3 and 5 year old children we were picking apples. The only varieties they had were standard "store type" kinds like Braeburn and Delicious. The trip ended up costing us close to $40 for 2 bags of apples. Never go again!"

Although we missed going to the field to pick our own pumpkin we enjoyed finding one from the large variety offered. After that we moved on to the petting zoo area which is $10.50 unlimited except pony rides. The petting zoo was fantastic. My son and I enjoyed most holding the baby chicks. There are so adorable and so many different ones. One side had the really small babies and other side were probably just few weeks older. We each held at least ten. Then we moved on the petting and feeding the friendly goats, sheeps, and lamps. Mama pig and piglets, donkey, birds, chickens, and turkeys were fun to look at-sorry no petting these animals. Overrall the animals and property looked well cared for. There were quite a few rides to choose from for all ages which is unlimited as well. We did the hayride-short circle around ride around the corn field. My son enjoyed bouncy house and inflatable side with the other kids. I like they had 3 slides so no long waits. Unfortunately, we ran out of the time to do the train ride-it was getting cold. Also, we tried few treats such as Apple Cider doughnuts which they kept bringing out fresh. I'm not usually a big fan but these were good. It was nice to samples some of the items they sell like apple and pumpkin pie, pumpkin and banana bread, several different spreads which were all tasty. I was a bit disappointed they different offer a better food selection for the season like kettle or roasted corn. Only hotdogs, nachos, regular popcorn, soda. I highly recommend this pumpkin farm so much to do for the money as they can be quite costly. Great for all ages. Already planning on going again next year:) "

They had a corn pit near the concession stand for the kids to play in, not sure if it's still there but the kids love it A visitor writes on October 12, 2008: "10 Acres of Maze Fun. We are going today-came highly recommended."

We love to go to the farm, see the animals, have a smoked turkey leg, root beer and fresh apple pie. We have been going for 15 years now. Location is great. Parking is free and lots of parking. The staff is so friendly and helpful. We enjoy their produce and the gift store treasures. Our only complaint...it is not open 12 months of the year...but everyone needs downtime. " A visitor writes on August 21, 2012: "This place us Awesome! I brought my Grand kids here last year and they had a blast all day. I love how they have an actually pumpkin field were the kids can learn where pumpkins are actually grown and pick them themselves. They also have so many attractions included in the admission which is great. I hate going somewhere having to pay admission but then have to pay for just about everything else that there. This is our new place to go every year in the fall. " A visitor writes on September 26, 2010: "I visited Siegel's Cottonwood Farm for the first and only time in Fall 2009. I called first to ask about the corn maze. According to the website and a person on the phone they were open until 6:00. We got there at about 4:00 figuring that 2 hours should be plenty of time. After only 30 minutes in the maze an employ came in and asked us to leave as the maze closes an hour before the rest of the farm. The website should have said that...the woman on the phone could have told us...the woman who sold us the tickets should have told us...and the employee who let us into the maze definitely should have told us! One trip to the manager later, we were allowed back into the maze for another 20 minutes. We will go to a different maze from now on."

Field Trips
Fall school classroom field trips for 2023, a day of learning and fun on the farm.
By reservation only: Reserve Online . Part of our mission at Vala’s Pumpkin Patch & Apple Orchard is to provide education through entertainment. The land that is now Vala’s Pumpkin Patch has been a working farm for over 100 years. When school children visit Vala’s Pumpkin Patch, we want them to have fun running through the pumpkin fields and seeing real tractors, but our greatest hope is that they will leave with a greater understanding of agriculture and an appreciation for Nebraska farms.
How It Works
- A classroom field trip is for children ages 3 to 13 (preschool through 6th grade) enrolled in a public school, private school, preschool, or child day care. At least 10 children, ages 3 and up, and one teacher are required for the school group field trip rate. Teachers must accompany the class.
- Rates for classroom field trips are available Monday through Friday from 9am to 3:30pm only, when schools are in session.
- Every field trip option includes a small pumpkin for each child.
- Only teachers and paid staff members are free. We recommend bringing and wearing your school ID badges while at Vala’s Pumpkin Patch.
- Parent/Adult chaperones or volunteers may pay separately for themselves and any siblings on the day of the field trip at the Admissions Barn. This adult admission price will include a train ride and a coupon for $2.50 off a pumpkin.
- Siblings of your student may attend the field trip if they have your permission. If they are age 3 and over they may pay separately with the parent at the Admissions Barn if you prefer not to include them in your count. Ages 2 and under are free. This admission price will include a coupon for $2.50 off a pumpkin.
- Same day re-admission policy: Any child, teacher or adult/parent attending during the day may turn in their “admission stickers” for a free same-day wristband to return in the evening (stickers must be exchanged, no exceptions).
- A child’s season pass may not be used for a classroom field trip, Monday through Friday, 9am to 3:30pm. This is because the cost of the field trip is for lessons and takeaways like pumpkins and apples. A parent accompanying their child on a field trip may choose to use the season pass for their own General Admission by presenting the pass to an admissions cashier.
Use our School Field Trips On-line Reservation Form
Teachers: Read about the 2 types of Field Trips below and decide which one fits your objectives. Select the date and time you wish to book. Some time slots may be sold out. Please have the other teachers and volunteers unload the children and have them wait near the entrance, but out of the parking lot. A Vala’s staff member will be helping to direct the children to a safe area to wait. After checking in have everyone put on the Vala’s Pumpkin Patch sticker. Everyone must be wearing a sticker to pass through the admissions gate and to ride the train. Each child will receive a bag for their pumpkin.
Quick & Easy Advance Check-In
Bypass the event day check-in by picking up the admission stickers and pumpkin bags before you arrive for your scheduled field trip. Call or email at least 48 hours in advance to let us know you are coming to pick up your admission stickers and we will have everything ready for you. Bring your purchase order, cash, credit card, or school check. When you arrive on the day of your field trip, with your stickers on, unload, check in with a greeter at front entrance, and proceed as a group through the admission gates. The stickers serve as your admission ticket and train ticket. If you have some last minute add-ons or late arrivals, such as parents with siblings, they can pay on their own at the Admissions Barn, at the school group rate, and join the group at a designated time or place. If you need a refund for any child or adult who was not able to attend, simply return the unused stickers to the reservation office BEFORE you enter the farm and our staff will change the purchase order or send a refund to the school. All refunds must be processed on the day of your field trip.
