7-Day Caribbean Cruises from Tampa

Spend Christmas or New Year’s Eve on a seven-day Caribbean cruise aboard Norwegian Dawn exploring Maya sites and snorkeling along the Mesoamerican Reef System, the second-largest coral reef system in the world. The Mesoamerican Reef extends from the northern tip of the Yucatan peninsula, off the coast of Cancun down to Honduras. Ports of call on this 2021 cruise from Tampa include the following destinations.

Roatan, Honduras

Roatan is part of the Bay Islands, located about 30 miles from mainland Honduras. The Bay Islands are renowned for their diving and eco-tourism. If you aren't a diver, you can go snorkeling or partake in the numerous other water-related activities you'll find on Roatan. Or, head inland for zip lining, off-road tours, and more.

Harvest Caye, Belize

Next up is Harvest Caye in the southern part of Belize. Spend your day parasailing or snorkeling around the island, or you can rent stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, and pedal boats. You can also explore Belize's mainland on one of Norwegian's cultural excursions. Learn about Maya culture and how cacao becomes chocolate, or explore a Maya archeological site and visit a Belizean spice farm.

Costa Maya, Mexico

Costa Maya sits on the Yucatan peninsula, relatively close to Belize's northern border. Costa Maya is a great jumping-off point to explore some of Mexico's Maya history, including archeological sites like Chacchoben or Dzibanche. Head south to Bacalar where you can relax in the beautiful lagoon that is renowned for its seven shades of blue.

Cozumel, Mexico

Cozumel is another island off Mexico's Yucatan peninsula. While many people come to Cozumel to dive, you can also snorkel, take a boat tour, or just relax on one of the pristine beaches. Take a taco tour, explore more Maya sites back on the mainland, or visit one of the region's eco-tourism parks.

11-Day Caribbean Cruise from Tampa

Set sail from Tampa and visit Key West before heading to some of the most iconic islands in The Caribbean. This 11-Day Caribbean cruise departs earlier in December, so you'll be back in Tampa in time to celebrate the holidays. Some cruise travelers add a few extra days to their trip, spending Christmas at one of Florida's popular theme parks. Ports of call on this Caribbean cruise include the following countries.

Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

Puerto Plata is the ninth-largest city in the Dominican Republic. There are numerous historical sites you can explore here, including Fortaleza San Felipe, which was built in the 16th century and once served as a local prison. There is also the Amber Museum, where you can see an interesting collection of creations made with Dominican amber. For some of the best views in Puerto Plata, take a ride up 2,600 feet to the top of Pico Isabel de Torres Mountain.

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

Explore some of the beautiful beaches around St. Thomas and the stunning harbor of Charlotte Amalie. Book a catamaran sail, island tour, eco hike, and more. Divers flock to St. Thomas for its stunning reefs and numerous wreck sites teeming with marine life. If you're certified, don't miss booking a dive here.

Willemstad, Curaçao

Willemstad is often called the Amsterdam of The Caribbean. Wander around town and you will immediately notice the brightly colored Dutch architecture that the Willemstad is famous for. Take a city tour, or explore Hato Caves, an underground system of passages that extend from Curaçao all the way to Latin America. Don't leave the island without trying a cocktail made with the famous local liqueur, Blue Curaçao.

Oranjestad, Aruba

Aruba is renowned for its white-sand beaches and bright blue waters. There are plenty of water-related activities, including catamaran sailing and multiple snorkeling adventures. Certified divers can book a one-tank dive to the Wreck of Antilla, considered one of the best wreck dive sites in The Caribbean. It's 400 feet long and only 50 feet down, making it ideal for less experienced divers, too. You can head inland and do a half-day Land Rover safari or enjoy a UTV off-road vehicle.

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands

Explore some of Grand Cayman's most famous sights like Seven Mile Beach or Stingray City. You can book shore or reef dives, or enjoy a turtle excursion to learn more about marine turtles and Grand Cayman's conservation efforts. Food travelers will want to book A Taste of Cayman to sample local cuisine and visit the Cayman Islands Brewery, which produces the only locally brewed beer.

Norwegian Jade Itineraries

Norwegian jade review, review of norwegian jade.

The 2006-built Norwegian Jade cruise ship is the 2nd of NCL Jewel-class liners, with sisterships Norwegian Gem , Norwegian Jewel , Norwegian Pearl .

The vessel (IMO number 9304057) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 308416000) and registered in Nassau .

History - construction and ownership

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is a subsidiary company of the shipping corporation Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NCLH). NCL was founded in 1966, headquartered in Miami (Florida USA) and publicly traded (NASDAQ) company listed on NYSE ( NYC ). NCLH's major shareholders are the corporations Apollo Global Management (American), Genting Group (Malaysian) and TPG Capital (American). In 2017, the brand NCL had a worldwide cruise market share 8,7% (passengers) and 8,4% (revenue). NCLH (shipowner) owns the brands NCL , Oceania and RSSC-Regent .

NCL Jade cruise ship

The 2200-passenger ship Norwegian Jade has a similar exterior appearance to the Norwegian Star (operational since 2001) and the Norwegian Dawn (2002). However, the interior design and amenities are quite different and merit Norwegian Jade having a Jewel Class design. All dining and entertainment options are almost the same on all ship owned by NCL. The unique thing on Norwegian Jade is that the vessel is definitely international. There are people from different countries like the United States, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, Mexico, Japan.

Decks and Cabins

Norwegian Jade staterooms (1201 total, in 36 grades) include 181x Suites, 360x Balcony, 243x Oceanview and 417 Inside cabins. Most staterooms are sized 140-160 ft2 (13-15 m2). The largest accommodations are the 3-Bedroom The Haven Garden Villa (2320 ft2 / 216 m2, with terrace sized 1035 ft2 / 96 m2).

The boat has 15 decks , of which 12 are passenger-accessible and 8 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

All meals are open seating and the choice of food is quite unrivaled, including from a steakhouse and Tepannyaki to French, Italian, tapas, sushi, buffets and even a 24-hour cafe, complete with English breakfast. Alizar and Grand Pacific are Norwegian Jade's main dining rooms. Open seating breakfast and lunch are provided in one of the two, both are open for dinner, and walk-ins are welcome in the evening. An electronic system onboard Norwegian Jade cuts down on wait times and lines in the restaurants. Monitors throughout the corridors reveal how busy the eateries are, with a bar ranging from green (come on in) to red (crowded). This screen acts as an electronic hostess and lets guests know how long the wait is for a table for four, for example, and where parties are being accepted.

Itineraries

Norwegian Jade itinerary program is based on Mediterranean cruises from Civitavecchia-Rome and Venice to Turkey, Greece and the Greek Isles, and also to ports on the French and Italian Riviera coasts in the Western Mediterranean.

In 2017, for the first time ever, NCL homeported a ship (Jade) in Hamburg Germany . The itineraries were 6- and 8-night Western Europe, 8- and 9-night Norwegian Fjords, 11-night Norway and North Cape , and one 13-night Norway, Iceland and UK. Alternatively, roundtrip departures were offered from Amsterdam Holland and Southampton England .

In summer 2018, the ship had scheduled Norway, Iceland and North Cape cruises from Southampton and Hamburg. In 2018-2019, the ship offered Southern Caribbean itineraries from homeport Miami (Florida USA) - 11-day and 14-day roundtrip Panama Canal cruises from Tampa and Miami.

Following the Coronavirus crisis, in early-April 2021, NCL announced new schedules for the ships Jade (7-day Mediterranean-Greek Islands from Piraeus-Athens /starting July 25), Joy (7-day Caribbean from Montego Bay Jamaica /starting August 15) and Gem (7-day Caribbean from La Romana Dominican Republic /starting August 15). Previously, the boats were planned to restart as follows - Joy (October 19, 2021/Caribbean from Miami ), Gem (Oct 29, 2021/Bermuda from NYC ), Jade (January 2, 2022/South Africa from Cape Town).

The ship's winter 2021-2022 program (December thru February) was canceled. It featured NCL's first roundtrips from Cape Town South Africa . A 12-day "Extraordinary Journeys" included visits to Namibia ( Luderitz , Walvis Bay ) and Durban , with overnights in Richards Bay and Cape Town. NCL Jade restarted operations on March 3, 2022, in the Mediterranean.

Norwegian Jade Wiki

Between 2006 and 2008, this vessel served in the NCL America company’s fleet under the name "Pride of Hawaii". In NCL America's fleet, it had as a fleet mate the sistership Pride of Aloha (now Norwegian Sky).

The NCL Jade ship was christened on May 22, 2006, in a ceremony at San Pedro Pier in LA, California. The selection of Senator Inouye as "Godfather" of NCL Pride of Hawaii, was an innovative step by Norwegian since this role is traditionally played by women.

JADE is of the Jewel-class Norwegian vessels. Her sisters in the fleet are the NCL ships Gem , Jewel and Pearl . The initial intent was JADE to have a design similar to that of Pride of America but later was decided to be enlarged (NCL Jewel-design).

In 2007 the NCL company announced they will permanently relocate the vessel from Hawaii due to substantial revenue losses. In early 2008 NCLH deployed the ship in Europe. Its last Honolulu departure was on Feb 4, 2008. The vessel went to dry-dock for some changes (new livery, casino, new name) to become "Norwegian Jade". However, she still keeps her Hawaii-themed interior decor (many flowers and landscapes throughout onboard venues and public spaces).

JADE's Inaugural Cruise (Maiden Voyage) was on February 16, 2008 ( Panama Canal from Los Angeles to Miami ). The ship's first Captain was Frank Juliussen.

NCL Jade refurbishment 2017 review

Ship's 2017 drydock (March 7 - April 3) was in Freeport Bahamas and resulted in the following deckplan changes:

Atrium's décor was changed. The old chandelier was replaced with a new one.

Over 2250 new artworks were installed throughout the ship (including in all cabins).

All staterooms were updated and upgraded with new furniture, carpeting, flat TVs, bed headboards (with USB outlets for device charging).

The Haven suite complex' Haven Courtyard was refurbished (new finishes on outdoor deck areas, swimming pool, hot tubs). New deck furniture and cabanas were added.

Main pool deck areas were also updated.

Spinnaker Lounge (deck 13) was upgraded, as well as the Fitness Centre (deck 12, new TechnoGym equipment).

The Haven suites and villas were all renovated with new furniture, finishes, wallpapers, carpeting, drapery, artworks.

2 new restaurants were added - O’Sheehan's Bar and Grill, Sugarcane Mojito Bar, The Cellars (Mondavi Family Wine Bar), Los Lobos Cantina (Mexican restaurant), The Pit Stop (poolside grill, deck 13).

Moderno Churrascaria (Brazilian steakhouse restaurant) was moved from deck 8 to deck 13. The restaurant was redesigned and outfitted with floor-ceiling windows and glass-door entrance.

Bliss Ultra Lounge (nightclub) was added on deck 7.

All other onboard eateries were updated (new carpeting, artworks, upholstery, window treatments), including La Cucina (Italian restaurant, deck 12), Cagney’s Steakhouse (deck 13), Teppanyaki Room (deck 7), Jasmine Garden (deck 7), Garden Cafe (deck 12). Cagney’s Steakhouse now has additional seating and a new virtual fireplace. La Cucina has a new wine wall.

During drydock 2017, NCL Jade was retrofitted with new "scrubbers" (exhaust gas cleaning systems). The new scrubber technology reduces the equivalent of approx 1500 tons of the poisonous gas Sulfur Oxide. NCL was the first cruise company to retrofit with a scrubber hybrid system vessels while in service. The new in-line scrubbers (5 units) are lightweight and able to operate in a dry mode, as well as in open and closed loops.

Drydock 2017 was part of NCL's "Norwegian Edge" program for fleetwide upgrades (2-year project budgeted USD 400 million). Each drydock costs around USD 35-40 million.

NCL Jade refurbishment 2011 review

Why Cruise From Tampa?

Florida offers several embarkation ports for cruises , so you may wonder why choose Tampa over all the others. (Particularly since we no longer have the option to cruise to Cuba .)

First, Tampa offers a variety of attractions and activities that families can enjoy before or after their cruise. For example, you can visit the Busch Gardens theme park or the Florida Aquarium or explore the historic Ybor City district.

Plus, Tampa’s location on the Gulf of Mexico means you can enjoy water-based activities such as swimming, boating, and fishing. So families have many options for extending their vacation and making the most of their time in Tampa. (We list more top Tampa attractions below.)

Second, Tampa has an array of cultural diversity that might surprise you! For instance, many people are unaware of Tampa’s strong Italian heritage . Combined with its rich Spanish and Cuban heritage, Tampa offers quite a melting pot of unique and vibrant cultural experiences that you may not find elsewhere. Families can explore the city’s diverse neighborhoods, sample international cuisine, and attend cultural events such as the Gasparilla Pirate Festival or the Cuban Sandwich Festival.

Finally, Tampa’s convenient location makes it easy for many families to embark on a cruise without having to travel far from home. The port is easily accessible from the airport and major highways, making it a convenient starting point for families who want to drive or fly.

Which Cruise Ships Leave From Tampa?

Port Tampa Bay hosts three cruise terminals, and several cruise lines choose Tampa as an embarkation point for various ships. These include Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Celebrity, and Norwegian. While not all ships will homeport from Tampa year-round, you will always find several options available. Ships leaving from Tampa also sail a variety of itineraries, including the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, and the Panama Canal.

Royal Caribbean Cruises from Tampa

Although Royal Caribbean operates many of the world’s largest cruise ships, ships sailing out of Tampa must pass under the Sunshine Skyway Bridge as they enter the Gulf of Mexico. Thus, Royal Caribbean relies on some of its smaller vessels when sailing cruises from Tampa . These ships also tend to be a little bit older than the rest of the Royal Caribbean fleet .

For the sailings currently scheduled for 2023 and 2024, Royal Caribbean has selected ships from the Radiance Class and Vision Class.

Norwegian Cruise Line's second Prima-class ship Norwegian Viva arrived to Miami on Nov. 28, 2023 as it began its first Caribbean sailing season. (Richard Tribou/Orlando Sentinel)

The parent company to Norwegian Cruise Line announced Monday a major order for eight new ships among its three brands as well as the construction of a pier to allow its cruise ships to dock instead of tender to its private Bahamas island for the first time.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings said it was planning to bring on four new ships for NCL, two new ships for upper premium brand Oceania Cruises and two ships for luxury brand Regent Seven Seas, all to be built at Fincantieri shipyard in Italy and debut during a 10-year run from 2026-2036.

The NCL ships would be the largest ever built for the line at around 200,000 gross tons and capacity of about 5,000 guests. They won’t arrive until after the final delivery of its Prima-Plus class ships expected between 2025-2028, the larger sister ships to the Norwegian Prima and Viva that debuted in the last couple of years. The four ships from the unnamed class of vessel would arrive in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036.

The new class for Oceania Cruises, which in 2023 debuted its first new ship in more than a decade — the Oceania Allura — will also be the largest ever built for the line at 86,000 gross tons and a capacity of 1,450 guests. They’re expected in 2027 and 2029.

And the Regent Seven Seas fleet’s new vessels will also be larger coming in at 77,000 gross tons with a capacity of 850 guests. They’re expected in 2026 and 2029. Regent just debuted the third of its Explorer class ships in December 2023.

“This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” said NCLH president and CEO Harry Sommer in a press release. “It also allows us to significantly leverage our operating scale, strengthen our commitment to innovation and enhance our ability to offer our guests new products and experiences, all while providing opportunities to enhance the efficiency of our fleet.”

No other details about the ships were released. Financing is already in place to fund 80% of the cost for the four ships among the Oceania and Regent orders, but financing for the four NCL ships is not finalized.

The eight ships expects to add 25,000 more to the three cruise lines’ passenger capacity.

In addition, the line is set to construct a multi-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, the popular Bahamas private destination visited by all three brands. The move follows the introduction of a dock that can support two Oasis-class vessels at neighboring Perfect Day at Coco Cay for Royal Caribbean while other private Bahamas destinations including Disney’s Castaway Cay and its new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point feature tenderless docks for easy access.

“We are likewise excited with the addition of a new pier at Great Stirrup Cay to support our increased capacity in the Caribbean and multiple ships to call on the island, enhancing our guest experience and bringing seamless and reliable access to our private island year-round,” Sommer said.

Norwegian cruise passengers stranded on African island after ship left without them

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Passengers are desperately seeking a way to return home after their dream vacation turned into a nightmare after their cruise ship left without them, leaving them stranded on the African island of São Tomé and Príncipe.

According to NBC News , eight passengers — six from the United States and two from Australia— were on the Norwegian Dawn, which departed from Cape Town, South Africa, on March 20 for a 21-day voyage set to end in Barcelona, Spain on April 10.

On March 27, the group was late to return to the ship from a private excursion on the island, and the ship left without them.

South Carolina couple Jay and Jill Campbell were among the passengers who were left behind. In an interview with NBC, they said their tour operator had told the cruise ship captain that they were going to be late to rejoin the ship.

Local Coast Guard crews also tried to get them on the cruise liner but were told they weren’t allowed to board.

As a result, the cruise ship departed, and the eight passengers were left stranded on the island off the coast of Nigeria for days. They have been struggling with currency issues, language barriers, and finding a way to rejoin their cruise.

“The lovely people of São Tomé were very gracious, very hospitable. They had reached out as much as they could to help us find hotels,” Jay Campbell told the “TODAY” show on Tuesday morning.

“We were able to get to a tour agency there to arrange flights to the next port of call … Very difficult process — you’re dealing with multiple languages, language barriers, you’re dealing with different currencies … finding someone that even has dollars … trying to get an agent to understand where we need to get to.

“It’s one of those ‘You can’t get there from here,'” he continued.

According to NBC, a spokesperson for Norwegian called the incident a “very unfortunate situation” but said that “guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time.”

After the passengers failed to return, Norwegian said their passports were delivered to local port agents, per protocol, and said that it was working with local officials to understand “the requirements and visas needed for the guests to reboard the ship at the next available port of call,” NBC reported.

On Monday, the stranded passengers made plans to rejoin the ship in Banjul, Gambia, but the ship couldn’t dock there due to “adverse weather conditions” and “tidal restrictions,” the cruise line told NBC. The guests were given information to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal, on Tuesday.

The Campbell’s said they traveled through seven countries in 48 hours to reach Senegal on Monday night, but now the couple is second-guessing if they want to rejoin the cruise.

“We are considering whether or not we are going to board the ship. It is in dock here in Senegal,” she told NBC. “We believe there was a basic duty of care that they had forgotten about, so it does concern us.”

“After what we witnessed, we truly believe that although there’s a set of rules or policies that the ship may have followed, they followed those rules too rigidly. I believe that they really forgot that they are people working in the hospitality industry and really the safety and wellbeing of the customers should be their first priority,” Jill Campbell said.

Norwegian told NBC that it’s the passenger’s responsibility to make their own travel arrangements to rejoin the cruise, but the company said it will reimburse the travel costs for the eight passengers.

“Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjul, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal,” a representative said. “We remain in communication with the guests and are providing additional information as it becomes available.”

Another passenger, 80-year-old Julia Lenkoff, was left on the island, but for a medical reason, NBC said.

Lenkoff was “medically disembarked” from the cruise on March 27 to seek local treatment.

Norwegian told NBC that its care team attempted to call Lenkoff several times but was unable to reach her. The cruise reportedly worked with its port agent in São Tomé and Príncipe for health updates.

After the Campbells found themselves stranded on the same island, they met Lenkoff and were able to contact the woman’s family in California, and they flew her home. The 80-year-old’s daughter said it was a decision that “saved her life.”

“She’s a world traveler. She travels all the time. So this was going to be one of her bucket list trips because she’s been to 120 countries so far, and she wanted to get to 130,” her daughter, Lana Lenkoff Geis, told “TODAY.”

Lenkoff was escorted on a flight to flight to Lisbon, Portugal, and safely returned to the U.S.

Norwegian cancels more than a dozen cruises on 7 ships in 2025

ncl cruise out of tampa

Norwegian Cruise Line canceled more than a dozen cruises on seven ships.

The sailings were scheduled to take place in 2025. The changes “are a result of varied events including the ongoing situation in the Red Sea and Israel, modified dry dock schedules for ship enhancements, a full ship charter, and lastly, to accommodate the demand for shorter close-to-home voyages to the Bahamas,” according to a spokesperson for the line.

The following itineraries were canceled:

  • Norwegian Spirit: Jan. 21, 2025
  • Norwegian Jade: Feb. 20 through and including March 24, 2025
  • Norwegian Sky: April 19 through and including June 5, 2025
  • Norwegian Star: May 17 through and including June 9, 2025
  • Norwegian Viva: May 18 and 27, and Sep. 20 and 29, 2025
  • Norwegian Pearl: Oct. 15, 2025
  • Norwegian Epic: Nov. 1 and 11, 2025

“We are committed to providing exceptional vacation experiences, both aboard our ships and by taking our guests to some of the most sought-out destinations around the world,” the spokesperson said in an emailed statement. “While we try to maintain original itineraries as much as possible, at times modifications are made to optimize the itinerary, enhance the guest experience or accommodate certain circumstances.”

Your cruise was canceled: Now what?

Guests whose cruises were impacted were given full refunds of their fare and a 10% discount in the form of a future cruise credit. The credit can be used on any of Norwegian’s published itineraries through Dec. 31, 2025.

Norwegian Cruise Line is canceling over a dozen cruises 2025.  The cruise line is nixing multiple voyages throughout next year, Norwegian confirmed to Travel + Leisure on Friday. "The recent 2025 itinerary cancelations are a result of varied events including the ongoing situation in the Red Sea and Israel, modified dry dock schedules for ship enhancements, a full ship charter, and lastly, to accommodate the demand for shorter close-to-home voyages to the Bahamas," a spokesperson for the cruise line told T+L.

The affected itineraries are as follows:

  • Norwegian Epic - , Feb. 20, 2025, Nov. 1, 2025, Nov. 11, 2025
  • Norwegian Jade - Mar. 4, 2025, Mar. 13, 2025, Mar. 24, 2025
  • Norwegian Pearl - Apr. 19, 2025, May 5, 2025, May 16, 2025, Oct. 15, 2025
  • Norwegian Sky - May 27, 2025, Jun. 5, 2025
  • Norwegian Spirit - Jan. 1, 2025, May 17, 2025
  • Norwegian Star - May 18, 2025, May 29, 2025, Jun. 9, 2025,
  • Norwegian Viva - May 27, 2025, Sep. 20, 2025, Sep. 29, 2025

The spokesperson also shared with T+L that guests impacted by the cancellations will receive a full refund and a 10% percent discount in the form of a Future Cruise Credit towards any sailing through Dec. 31, 2025. "In addition, we understand the inconvenience and frustration this disruption may cause affected guests, so we have shared alternative sailings similar to their original booking," the spokesperson added, encouraging impacted guests to head to contact the company at 1-800-327-7030 for more information.

In February 2024, NCL also announced it would no longer dock in Venice, Italy, due to restrictions of the waterways.  “While we have made every effort possible to maintain these calls to Venice, the tender operation and overall experience this provides our guests has fallen short of the standard we aim to deliver,” a spokesperson from NCL told T+L at the time.  Despite the cancellations, the cruise industry continues to rebound since COVID-19 closures. The industry is expected to grow to 130 million global passengers in 2026, which is up from 73 million global passengers in 2022, according to a 2023 report from the Cruise Lines International Association.

Why a major Miami cruise company has canceled over a dozen international trips for 2025

M iami-based Norwegian Cruise Line has canceled at least 14 cruises on 7 ships in 2025 as a booming industry confronts global conflict and other issues.

The cancellations include trips in May and September on Norwegian Viva, the company’s newest ship, and ones in April through June on Norwegian Sky, which frequently sails from PortMiami.

Norwegian said customers who are affected will get a full refund and a 10% discount on future sailings through Dec. 31, 2025.

In a statement, the company said that the cancellations “are a result of varied events, including the ongoing situation in the Red Sea and Israel, modified dry dock schedules for ship enhancements, a full ship charter, and lastly, to accommodate the demand for shorter close-to-home voyages to the Bahamas.”

Suspended trips include the Norwegian Jade from Feb. 20 through March 24, 2025. That ship often departs from Port Canaveral.

Norwegian remains optimistic about cruising. This week, the company ordered eight new ships, its largest ever single purchase, a milestone celebrated at Seatrade Cruise Global, a four-day annual industry conference at the Miami Beach Convention Center. They will be delivered between 2026 and 2036.

Since the terror group Hamas attacked Israel and the Gaza war started in October, cruise companies have been canceling trips to the Middle East.

Next year’s cruise cancellations affect passengers of the Norwegian Epic, Norwegian Sky, and Norwegian Viva.

A March 28 letter to passengers said: “We have been monitoring the situation in Israel, and despite our best hopes that it would de-escalate, we have made the decision to alter published itineraries that transit through and around the region.”

For Epic, the decision was made “in order to reroute her and accommodate the early start to her Caribbean cruise season.”

The Sky will be rerouted around Africa and deployed to Eastern, Western, and Southern Africa, a letter to those passengers said.

Viva is being sent to the Mediterranean, passengers were told in a letter.

Despite any security risks, major airlines including United and Delta have said they will resume flights to Israel. Next week, El Al resumes non-stop service between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Tel Aviv twice a week. The Israeli airline continues to offer five flights a week from Miami International Airport.

Norwegian in its statement said the cruise company remains committed to taking its guests to “some of the most sought-out destinations around the world.” But sometimes, itineraries need to be modified to “accommodate certain circumstances.”

Other reasons for the cruise changes

But security in the Middle East isn’t the only reason for the changes.

The Norwegian Star canceled because of a “full ship charter.” That means a private organization offered to rent out the whole ship for an entire trip.

The Norwegian Spirit underwent a planned renovation in less time than anticipated, and so now wants to use that time for a longer trip. “As the renovation period will be complete prior to schedule, we now have the opportunity to enhance the originally scheduled January 21, 2025 itinerary, and offer a longer and more immersive experience,” it told guests in a letter.

Meanwhile the canceled sailings on the Norwegian Jade from Feb. 20 through March 25 is “part of a fleet redeployment to accommodate strong demand for cruises through the Panama Canal and to the Bahamas,” the company wrote in a letter to passengers.
