  • Trivia Bruce Horak , the actor who plays Hemmer, is legally blind, just like his character's species, the Aenar, who are also blind.
  • Goofs There are some rank insignia mistakes. Number One is introduced as "Lieutenant Commander Una Chin-Riley" yet she is wearing the rank insignia of a full commander: two full stripes. A Lieutenant Commander's rank insignia is a full stripe under a thin stripe (in TOS it is a full stripe and a staggered stripe). It is not uncommon for a ship's first officer to be a Lt. Commander if they have not been in the position long. Spock at this point is a Lieutenant but he is wearing Lieutenant Commander's stripes; a Lieutenant just has one stripe. La'an is the ship's chief of security and the ship's second officer. She is also wearing Lt. Commander stripes but is addressed as a Lieutenant, but it would make more sense for her to be a Lieutenant Commander. Either way both of their rank insignia are not matching the rank they are addressed by. Ortegas is addressed as a Lieutenant but is wearing Lieutenant Commander's strips. A Lieutenant Commander may be addressed as a Commander or Lieutenant Commander but never as just a Lieutenant, so either her rank insignia or the manner she is addressed by the rest of the crew is in error.

Captain Pike rides more horses than starships in the first Star Trek: Strange New World trailer

Save a horse (ride a shuttle).

By Chaim Gartenberg

Paramount has debuted the first trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , the latest Star Trek series that’s centered on the USS Enterprise (the first time that a show has returned full-time to the iconic ship since Star Trek: Enterprise ended in 2005.

Strange New Worlds is technically both a spinoff and a prequel, picking up with the crew of the USS Enterprise after their appearance in Star Trek: Discovery ’s second season, making it also a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series (given that the show is set about a decade before Kirk takes over as captain).

As such, the crew of the Enterprise is a mix of familiar and new names for fans. The ship is helmed by Captain Pike (Anson Mount), with Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley, his first officer. Ethan Peck’s Spock is there, but as science officer, as is a Nyota Uhura, who’s still a cadet at this point (played by Celia Rose Gooding).

A more old-fashioned kind of Star Trek show

The trailer seems more set on establishing the overall vibe of the show, which seems pitched at trying to recapture the more episodic, exploratory style of earlier Trek series (as opposed to the more serialized nature of recent shows like Discovery or Picard ). The nostalgia factor runs strong throughout, too, with a voiceover waxing rhapsodic about the wonder of space travel and the stirring sounds of the original Star Trek theme playing in the background.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is just one of many pieces of Paramount’s resurgent Star Trek franchise on its Paramount Plus streaming service, alongside Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Star Trek: Prodigy .

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will debut on Paramount Plus on May 5th.

Both Discovery and the Next Generation sequel series Star Trek: Picard started out strong before running into narrative quicksand in later seasons. ( Discovery has become relentlessly grandiose, with endless speeches about the glories of space travel, and Picard has gotten head-spinningly complicated.) It’s a relief, then, that the latest Trek offering, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds — premiering this Thursday on the streamer; I’ve seen the first five episodes — gets back to basics, closely hewing to classic Trek with an old-school vibe and an episodic alien-of-the-week format. (It even brings back the traditional uniforms and opening narration from the original series.) It’s a throwback, to be sure… and a welcome one.

Celia Rose Gooding in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

We get a few passing mentions of Discovery ‘s Michael Burnham, but Strange New Worlds mostly charts its own course with clear-cut missions and a new planet/alien/mystery each week, while still weaving in a few serialized strands throughout. The weekly format keeps it light and nimble, and it doesn’t get bogged down by impenetrably dense technobabble like Discovery and Picard do, opting instead for light comedy, fist fights and eye-candy special effects like a thrilling chase through an asteroid belt. It’s more personal and physical, less cosmic and cerebral.

Star Trek Strange New Worlds Pike Anson Mount

A warning, though (or a red alert, I suppose): The standalone stories are just OK so far. The early episodes are pretty standard sci-fi fare: the mysterious object with formidable powers; the mysterious virus that infects the whole crew. I’d like to see these new worlds get a bit more strange. (Episode 4, though, is an effectively tense thriller, as the Enterprise faces off against the ruthless Gorn alien race in a stripped-down space battle.) There’s nothing here yet that stacks up against the very best episodes of the original Star Trek or Next Generation … but then again, that may be an unfairly high bar to reach this early on. It’s off to a promising start, with a solid crew brimming with potential. By going back to the past, Strange New Worlds points the way to a brighter future.

THE TVLINE BOTTOM LINE: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds gets back to basics with an old-school, episodic format that reinvigorates the franchise.

Excited for this and am quite tired of 10-episode season arcs that completely lose the plot by Ep 2, meander meaninglessly along and then, as with the current season of Picard, rush madly to tie up all the loose ends in the final hour. .

Some “just okay” episodic Trek sounds fantastic by comparison.

Still watching “Picard”, and it’s hard to watch the former space hero as the main actor in “The old man and the sea of regret”, in a rubber plot that is forcibly stretched over too many episodes. So I am really looking forward to “Strange New Worlds” with the alien-of-the-week approach and hopefully some plots that aren’t trying to teach me how to see the world in the most on-the-nose way possible. I want to be entertained by Star Trek, as it used to do decades ago!

Picard’s seasons really are about 2 episodes too long, aren’t they? It would benefit from being a tight 8. I really enjoyed the first half of this season, but the ‘gala’ episode and the one that followed really bogged down the narrative. . On the other hand Lower Decks never feels like there are *enough* episodes in a season!

True – I would want to see far more episodes in each Lower Decks season! There are no fillers there, just fun and action.

I guess I’m getting to be an old curmudgeon – I couldn’t get through one episode of LD. I found the characters to be dumb and immature. Like I said, curmudgeon.

The thing missing from Trek lately hasn’t been action or goofiness (though at times the goofiness doesn’t appear to be done on purpose). The thing missing has been strong characters and thoughtful, intelligent storytelling that makes you think. Trek has done great episodes that take place in one spot, with two people talking for the whole episode. Every YouTuber can make a grand space battle these days. What we need is intelligence. That is the part that modern Trek can’t do, and what they will have to show here in order to win over the audience that they’ve lost. Don’t give endless speeches about how great you are. Just be great. And I don’t know why, but having Pike on horseback in Montana just rubs me the wrong way. It is a Kirk vibe being given to Pike… but I get that this nitpick is just my own thing.

Pike and horses was one of the things we knew about him from the original The Cage pilot. Yeah, Kirk adopted that trait too, but they’re being true to the character by calling back to it.

Like I said, it’s my own thing. I like the movies, so a lot of Kirk imagery in my head is from camping in the mountains, or on horseback. When I saw the preview of this new Trek, it evoked the wrong character. It reminded me of the Trek I like… but not in a way that made me want to watch this new show. Just in a way that made me want to watch the old stuff movies.

As much as anything, the Kirk trait was more that Bill owns horses and had that written into the storyline.

They literally show Pike feeding his horse sugar cubes in The Cage.

Kirk doesn’t sit on a horse or express any particular fondness for horses until Generations and that was only because Shatner likes horses.

How many times have we been promised “it’s going to be more like the original series”, and have been let down? I’m remaining skeptical.

Just saw the first two episodes at the Paley Center NYC at a special sneak preview. It IS a lot like the original series – fun and thoughtful. Enjoyed it more than Discovery and Picard

I like how you put it fun and thoughtful. People forget there were a lot of messages in those episodes of the original Star Trek. I honestly think a lot of them went over people’s heads. Television has almost always had a messaging and blessings. The difference now is people are so set in their ways they don’t want to hear anything but messages to tie into the Tribal beliefs. I recently saw the picture of the Pike and came to say that Pike was hot!. After reading the article I really wanted to make the point that Star Trek has always been the show with a message and if you don’t see that you probably didn’t get the message

I have hopes (maybe not high) for this newest version of Star Trek and I agree with your comments about the steadily declining “Discovery” and “Picard.” I thought the last season of “Discovery” was dull as the scissors abandoned in my kitchen drawer. “Picard” this current season has had moments of excitement and brilliance but I think it has been padded into a long series of convoluted thinking and exposition.

You lost me at “sexier side” of Spock. Why is that something anyone would need. It’s going to be a pale comparison to Nimoy.

Nimoy breathed life into Spock in a way I don’t think anyone else could have. .

The man knew Spock was going to live beyond him. What’s more, he wanted Spock to. He liked Quinto’s take, I like it, and there are things I like about Peck’s that I want to see more. I want to see how he grows into it. .

And, from Drucilla, to the Khome woman he hypnotized in “The Omega Glory,” to Leila Kilomi in, “This Side of Paradise,” (and I’m talking about the tenderness he showed her after he regained himself at the end) to the Romulan Commander, there’s been plenty of “sexeh Spock.”

“I like it…There’s things I like about Peck, I want to see more…I want to see how he grows…” I know I probably won’t watch it, so could you clip all those scenes and send them to me, please and thank you.

There was poetry in the way that Chapel loved Spock while he was unable to return that love. The thing she loved (who he was) was what made it impossible. They make Spock sexier because they’re lazy. Because exploring logic isn’t always going to be simple, or politically correct. Because it’s what you do when you don’t have anything better to say about a character. Heaven forbid you write a character that doesn’t revolve around sex.

This is a much younger Spock (as far as maturity). He’s half-human and he’s still figuring out who he is. We’ve seen him struggle with who he is later in his life, but he knew who he was. This is the Spock who smiled on Talos V in The Cage, and it fits with what he later tells about his young adult self. And Spock has certainly hit on women in The Original Series. He just didn’t like Chapel.

Doing a younger Spock is a mistake in general. They should have moved on to different characters. Because the excuses don’t really matter. They keep remaking the same characters and making excuses for why they’re just new characters, given the names of old characters. They’ve been doing this for over a decade now and it has never worked. The thing with Chapel was the contrast. Her expression of love contrasted his lack thereof. You could also point to Spock and McCoy, Tuvok and Neelix, Janeway and Seven… the list goes on. If you see Data smile, you feel it because it isn’t normal. Introducing us to nuSpock by showing us how sexy and emotional he is does nothing for contrast. Just take off the ears and make him human.

Because Alex Kurtzman is an absolute hack and creatively bankrupt, so hey, by all means let’s put him in charge of all things Star Trek.

Over and over we hear the same hater song: this is a mistake, that’s a mistake, the writers are lazy, “nu trek” sucks because it’s not a shot for shot remake of what came before, the ship looks wrong, the ears are too big, it’s just an endless procession of joylessness.

Give. It. Up. Already.

The first episode of SNW was brilliant and super fun. The Vulcans in SNW act like Vulcans. Ethan Peck has done a great job as a younger Spock and added a very interesting dimension to him. Give it a chance.

Honestly, if people can’t find something to like between the FIVE current shows then there’s no Star Trek they will ever like ever again.

But they did like a whole lot of trek shows and films before Paramount+. Some people might have had minor problems with each new show or movie here and there but it either dissipated the more they watched or was just a small issue to begin with. Even Enterprise which I loved, and tied with Voyager as my favorite Trek. I think one of the biggest problems people had with it was the theme song; which I thought was cheesy the first time I heard it but it grew on me, and I would sing along when watching a marathon of the show. The NuTreks are just not Star Trek and just bad television in general.

Discovery started with so much promise then quickly decended into self parody by writers taking every possible opportunity to suffocate the viewers with virtue signals and insufferable wokeness. Who can forget Evil Lorca’s line that he wanted to “Make the Galaxy Great Again?” The only thing missing was Jason Isaacs wearing an orange wig while delivering the line. Fortunately, the writer of that episode, who also moonlighted for the Democratic National Committee’s propaganda arm, was let go not long after, presumably for failing to appreciate that allegory works best when not delivered by a shotgun blast.

If Strange New Worlds sticks to fun stories and lightweight sci-fi, it has the potential to right the Star Trek ship. If it descends into Discovery levels of wokeness, well, it should expect the same sub CW tier viewership numbers. And pretty please, no more stunt casting. We don’t want to see Stacy Abrams as President of the Universe any more than the voters of Georgia wanted her to be governor.

Stacy was great! I like “wokeness” in my life and tv shows.

Enough virtue signaling, Mr. Red Hat. We all know who you voted for.

How’s it feel to know you would have been one of the trek fans complaining about the first interracial kiss back in the day, or shouting how they were pushing communism by having a black woman and Japanese man in positions of power. It’s always been progressive

Star Trek has always been progressive, but it was usually cleverer about how it chose to have characters lecture each other. The days of Abraham Lincoln giving history lessons and Wesley wondering why people get high were dispensed with pretty quickly. That’s why it never really angered Conservatives beyond the unwantable racists or homophobes in their ranks.

But Discovery really feels like a lazy depiction of identity politics and feel-good therapy sessions with no substance to it. It’s condescending and rather insufferable. Casting Stacey Abrams, an active politician, to play the president was another lazy move from a show that would rather just pay themselves on the back for casting diverse and LGBT actors and hug and talk about feelings than actually develop real characters for those actors and talk about something truly compelling.

Yeah, it doesn’t have the subtly of the aliens painted half black and half white down the middle. Or the Nazi planet.

When people say this stuff I swear they’ve never actually understood anything about the franchise they claim to love.

Star Trek always had messages but most of them were timeless lessons of the human condition and was done in a subtle and thoughtful context. As far as progressive, it was the future after all; the first show was airing at the time of Civil rights movement, that was being fostered in mostly by Republicans in the government at the, time I’ll remind you, so how better to show the future that pertains to earth then an interracial kiss? There was also space alien kisses, Oh My. The Japanese were our ally in the 60’s; as far as a black person being in power representing communism, the communist party of China tries to scrub every black or gay person they can from American films so I don’t get that. They used to put storytelling and entertainment before any messages. Hollywood has largely forgotten that. Also between all the Star Trek shows a lot of the aliens were more diverse sexually and race wise then anything anyone on earth could claim currently and no one complained. The old shows were done right, good sci-fi, good entertainment; the new shows bad writing, narcissistic and just plain garbage. There’s a difference, otherwise more people that were fans of the several old shows and films would like these too. I mean, ding-dong. Is there anybody in there? Just nod if you can hear me. Is there anybody home?

Precisely. Gregg: You know precisely what this shows about. So, please stop with your wokeness nonsense.

If I attend a CPAC conference, I would never expect the talk about equality, mitigating the effects of anthropogenic climate change, treating everyone with dignity and respect or policy proposals that would actually pro-life. No please get off your high house. We all know Start Trek to be a progressive show as Luke states.

Go watch some Dinesh D’Souza conspiracy theory entertainment.

What part of “make the galaxy great again” an expression derived from Hitler and adapted by donald trump, can possibly be termed woke or virtue signaling? I wish many of you would learn the meaning of words before using them.

Discovery was fine, except for that arc about the cause of the destruction of deuterium. That I find to be really stupid.

Wow, is that you Putin? Are you can invade Ukraine too to kill all those Nazis?

Just amazing that someone would read this article then make this comment.

I couldn’t agree more. I was a die hard Star Trek fan for over 30 years and literally stopped watching because of all of the wokeness in Discovery. I was very hesitant to give Picard a shot, and that is saying a lot. I am glad I did but I have the same concern about this one. If it goes anything like Discovery did I will likely ditch the franchise forever.

These Alex Kurtzman shows don’t exist in my dojo. How has Paramount not kicked this hack to the curb?? He must’ve gotten advice from Kathleen Kennedy on how to fail upward.

I am looking forward to watching this. I remember as a kid watching the re-runs of TOS in the 70’s which set my mind afire with this called computers/technology and wanting to go to work for NASA after college. Then TNG came and was really great, no LONG arcs but some episodes that loosely tied to one another. DS9 was my absolute favorite once the writes hit their stride (gotta thank Babylon 5 for that). Voyager was back to exploring while getting back home. I did like Enterprise and, I admit, mostly because it had Scott Bakula and it wasn’t that bad actually.

Now I have been trying to get thru Picard and it just..doesn’t hit any of the Chords that any of the other series before hit. And Discovery I just could not get past the 3rd Episode (ughh).

Strange New Worlds, to me, looks like it is going back to the classic TOS episodes and not LONG arcs and hopefully really do some fleshing out many of the characters and has given me that feeling like I had watching TOS as a kid… Hope and wonderment.

Giving B5 a little too much credit for DS9’s success I think.

This goes way back. JMS wanted to stir up publicity for B5, so he implied (but never officially accused) the Trek producers of ripping off B5. Truth is, most of the stuff they “stole” wouldn’t have been in the original B5 pitch, because B5 was a mess of cast shakeups and plot reworking, and DS9 was already well underway before B5 would have developed a lot of those elements. DS9 didn’t lift anything from B5. B5 is a fine show, and both have their place in the world. I just think that this whole plagiarism drama has gone on for way too long.

This review is far too kind to Discovery and Picard

91% of Americans are scientifically illiterate. ST isn’t complicated or ‘bogged’ down with technobabble’ – too many viewers just aren’t very bright (and, worse, choose that). Yes, Discovery is overly grandiose, but there isn’t anything complicated about Picard.

Too right, Tom. I realize not everybody may be a diehard sci-fi fan, but what these people need to realize is that it IS science-based fiction.

Yes, there is shame in being stupid, people. If you want a show where you can turn your brain off to enjoy it, something Trek-based definitely should NOT be where you turn to.

As people have commented, hopefully it is better than season 2 of Picard.

Dove verrà trasmesso Star Trek Strange New Worlds?

Can’t wait for this. I was one of the fans hoping for a spin-off announcement back in Discovery season 2 because of how much I loved the characters (especially Pike), and was thrilled they went through with it. And everything we’ve seen from it since then looks very promising.

I’ve actually liked the newer shows to varying degrees (the animated ones being my favorites), but this seems like it will be the the “traditional Trek” cherry on top for me. I’m hoping more of those who’ve been less thrilled about the recent shows will finally find one that suits their tastes more with this one.

I’m loving Picard Season 2, and I’m very glad to see good reviews coming in for this.

A few of the cast members have me skeptical for now. I’ll have to figure it out on Thursday.

Great review, Dave!

Considering what the other paramount+ Star Trek shows were, I would assume this would probably be bait and switch. I don’t think there are any writers or directors who are capable, or at least willing to write a real Star Trek series. Hollywood is too sanitized in current year and that impeads creativity and prevents the building of timeless classics. I think it’s really just over their heads.

Why is s2e9 of “Star Trek strange new worlds” a musical? This is a super BAD idea. I cannot watch it. Stick to Star Trek. Neither animosity or Shatner could sing. What in the world were you thinking? If another WASTED episode appears, I will not watch it again, it will be permanently ruined for me. No one sings, ever. Thank you for your time. R. B. Marietta subscribed via Amazon.

Never never again have a musical Star Trek episode, trailer or movie of any kind I do not like musicals, I do not watch musicals. Please do not mix Star Trek and musicals ever again. Yes, I will unsubscribe if there is another Star Trek

I was unable to enjoy episode nine season two because it was a musical. I was unable to watch this episode because it was a musical.

I was very very very disappointed in episode nine season two of Star Trek strange new worlds. I am unhappy. Never ever do this again please! Thank you in advance

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Release Date

Premiere date prediction: Late 2022, Early 2023

We don’t yet have a release date for the third season of Patrick Stewart’s Star Trek , but it is currently in production (or, you know, hopefully ), so the wait between Season 2 and 3 will likely much shorter than the one between Season 1 and 2.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Announced

Woo! Star Trek: Discovery has been renewed! There’s something special about watching a TV show for which another season is already guaranteed. This is now the case for Star Trek: Discovery Season 4, which we already know will be getting more stories in Season 5.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Announced

You know a media company has a lot of faith in a new series when it gets a Season 2 renewal before it’s even premiered. This is the case with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , which hopefully means Paramount has liked what it has seen of its first season.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 Announced

Star Trek: Lower Decks will be back for a Season 4! The fourth season will consist of 10 episodes, and does not yet have a release date.

Upcoming Star Trek TV Shows: What's Ahead For The Sci-Fi Franchise

Here's what's ahead for Star Trek.

Michael Burnham on Star Trek: Discovery

It’s a golden era for Star Trek tv shows, as the franchise is churning out more content than ever before. Fans with a Paramount+ subscription can stream a plethora of old and new content from one of the greatest sci-fi franchises of all time.

There’s a ton of new Star Trek content coming in the future, including the debut of a new show as well as the return of all the ones fans already know well. For those who need a breakdown of what all to expect, look no further because here’s where and when all the new Trek will arrive in 2023 and beyond. There’s even some information on planned shows that aren’t quite ready yet, but hopefully, we’ll see them soon enough.

Sonequa Martin-Green in Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 - Premiering On April 4th 2024

Captain Michael Burnham and the crew are back, and based on what we've seen and heard about Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 so far, some changes are on the way. Season 5 will see the crew race against others in an attempt to secure an ancient power, and will apparently have a tonal shift that will skew more toward action and adventure. We also learned that this coming season will be the final adventure , as Paramount+ decided to end the series after this coming season. The final season will kick off in April and, fingers crossed, leave an avenue open for more stories with these characters in the 32nd century.

Anson Mount as Christopher Pike in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 - In Production

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is coming back for Season 3, and is currently filming for the upcoming season. It's likely the season will kick off with the second part of the adventure started in the Season 2 finale . Pike must decide whether or not he's going to listen to Starfleet and retreat to avoid further conflict with the Gorn or to stay and try to save the kidnapped crew members. I have a hunch I know what decision he'll make, but I'm also very invested in seeing if Scotty will remain with the crew and what other adventures will come as well.

Hologram Janeway in Star Trek: Prodigy

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 - Coming In 2024

Paramount+ originally renewed Star Trek: Prodigy for Season 2, but announced later that it had been canceled alongside other shows on the platform. While the news was a bummer to many and encouraged responses from stars like Kate Mulgrew , there is a silver lining. After some talk with other companies, Paramount managed to negotiate a deal where the series will transition over to Netflix , and Season 2 will release over there. At this time, it's unknown whether or not this will lead to more seasons of Prodigy , but fans are thankful they'll at least get to see the season that was being worked on coming up in 2024.

Georgiou in Star Trek: Discovery

Section 31 Movie - Production Underway

Section 31 was one of the first Star Trek spinoffs announced after Discovery , and yet it took the longest to get off the ground. The series was supposed to Michelle Yeoh ’s Phillipa Georgiou and her efforts in the secret ops Starfleet faction that does the jobs that others in the organization would rather not know about. Other former Discovery stars, like Shazad Latif, were involved at one point, but some believed the odds of it happening aren't great after Michelle Yeoh's Oscar win .

It turns out Yeoh was interested in making it happen, and Paramount+ decided to alter the idea to a movie . Fans are excited about the project all the same, and ready to see Michelle Yeoh back in her role. Production on the film is officially underway, and it's looking like a premiere sometime in late 2024 to 2025 is likely.

Tilly in Star Trek: Discovery

Starfleet Academy - Production Starting In 2024

Alex Kurtzman revealed not long ago that Star Trek is actively working on another new live-action series , and it’s going to be set at Starfleet Academy. Of course, we don’t know exactly what era this series is set to take place during or who is going to star in it yet. We don’t really know much of anything, though it’s worth noting that Star Trek: Discovery did write off its character Tilly when she took an offer at Starfleet Academy. The episode where that happened seemed like it could be a backdoor pilot for the show, but again, we have no idea. We do know that the writer's room is underway, but details are scant beyond that.

As shown above, there’s still a ton of Star Trek on the way in 2024, and beyond. The only way to watch these shows is with a Paramount+ subscription , which is totally worth picking up with the increasing amount of shows and movies available to watch.

Paramount Plus 'Star Trek' shows all getting new episodes in 2022

‘Star Trek: Discovery,’ ‘Star Trek: Picard’ and ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ are just around the corner.

Star Trek: Discovery

Paramount Plus is going boldly into 2022, announcing new release dates for its group of Star Trek original series — Star Trek: Discovery , Star Trek: Picard , Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy . In addition to release dates, four out of the five shows have also earned 10-episode season renewals from the streaming service.

The Star Trek series have become some of the flagship Paramount Plus original series , tapping into the passionate fan base with shows that focus on new and familiar characters, as well as expand into animation targeted for both adults and kids.

Star Trek: Discovery was one of the first new Star Trek original series, debuting when Paramount Plus was still CBS All Access. Season 4 of Star Trek: Discovery is set to debut on Paramount Plus Feb. 10, but fans can rest assured in knowing that there will definitely be a season 5, as the show was renewed. Star Trek: Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones and Anthony Rapp.

Star Trek: Picard is set to return for its second season on March 3. Sir Patrick Stewart reprises his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in this original series, alongside Alison Pill, Isa Briones and Jeri Ryan. Star Trek: Picard is already in production for its third season.

The latest Star Trek original series on Paramount Plus, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will have its premiere on May 5 and has already been renewed for a second season. A prequel to the original Star Trek series from the 1960s, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds stars Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn and Etha Peck.

On the animated side, Star Trek: Lower Decks is going to return for season 3 with 10 new episodes in summer 2022. The series, featuring the voice work of Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells and Eugene Cordero, has also been renewed for a fourth season.

Star Trek: Prodigy , meanwhile, is currently in the middle of its first season’s first half, with that capping off with episode 10 on Feb. 3. The second half of season 1, featuring another 10 episodes, is expected to debut on Paramount Plus later in 2022. Following a group of teens that stumble upon a derelict Starfleet ship, Star Trek: Prodigy features the voices of Brett Gray, Rylee Alazraqui, Jason Mantzoukas and Kate Mulgrew.

'Star Trek: Discovery' season 5 episode 5 'Mirrors' is a quality installment, but weighed down by another anchor of nostalgia

This entire episode was more than likely written for the sole reason that the sets from "Strange New Worlds" could be utilized.

And this week's throwback to "Discovery"-past to add to the season-long epilogue is to the Mirror Universe

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Star Trek: Discovery" season 5, episode 5

The chase across the galaxy for the Progenitors MacGuffin continues, offering chances to insert stand-alone, episode-length adventures along the way. And this week's installment, entitled "Mirrors" features a brief and very random reminder that the Mirror Universe exists.

And that alone would've made an genuinely enthralling episode, but...Alex Kurtzman et al could not resist the temptation for an utterly pointless and thoroughly unnecessary throwback to the USS Enterprise. Honestly, these people have a serious problem, they should seek help.

To put all of this into context, the crew of the USS Discovery continue their pursuit of Malinne 'Moll' Ravel (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis) and that chase leads them to er...well, you know, a giant, space-time swirly orifice that fills the viewscreen. Apparently, it's some sort of wormhole that's spectacularly unstable because of the constant matter/anti-matter reactions that are taking place at the opening. It's actually more than a little reminiscent of the inside of the V'ger spacecraft from "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" and that's just fine.

a man with pointed ears in a red tunic looks confused at someone off-camera

But it's what they find inside that grinds gears. Since the Discovery is too big to squeeze through the constantly opening and closing orifice, Capt. Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Book (David Ajala) take a shuttle through only to find...the ISS Enterprise. Yes, indeed, last seen (and only seen, actually) in the epic "The Original Series" episode "Mirror, Mirror" (S02, E04).

While beaming back to the USS Enterprise during an ion storm, Kirk, McCoy, Scotty and Uhura materialize aboard a almost-identical Enterprise in a parallel universe. Here, the United Federation of Planets has been replaced by the Terran Empire and its inhabitants are violent and cruel. Their only hope is to artificially reproduce the effects of the storm to facilitate a return to their own universe. (" I mperial S pace S hip replaces the traditional " U nited S pace S hip.")

And while the idea of finding a derelict, 900-year-old starship from the latter half of the 23rd century is a great idea, in the name of the Great Prophet Zarquon, why-oh-why did it have to be the Enterprise? There are — at least — 10 other Constitution Class starships that could've been potentially chosen and thus still allowing the updated sets from "Strange New Worlds" to have been used.

The USS Cayuga (NCC-1557), USS Constellation (NCC-1017), USS Defiant (NCC-1764), USS Excalibur (NCC-1664), USS Exeter (NCC-1672), USS Hood (NCC-1703), USS Intrepid (NCC-1631), USS Lexington (NCC-1709), USS New Jersey (NCC-1975) and the USS Potemkin (NCC-1657). And those are just the ones that are canon. Another new vessel could just as easily have been introduced as it's not unknown for Nu-Trek to bring brand new ships to the line.

And of course Burnham makes reference to the fact that her brother, Spock, served on this ship, which is probably another reason why the Enterprise was forced upon the writers. And according to some extremely rushed exposition, most of the crew escaped the weird wibblywobbly wormhole and went on to lead peaceful and productive lives — we assume somewhere not too far away given how long ago it happened and the current location in deep space — in a somewhat Space Seed scenario. Another interesting throwaway remark from Burnham was, "Crossing between universes has been impossible for centuries now," which shuts down that potential story avenue rather abruptly.

But let's also focus on why this episode could've been near-faultless if only someone could counsel Paramount showrunners on how to ween themselves off of nostalgia addiction. This week we get to see the whole Moll and L'ak backstory...and it's rather good and to add to that, Book and Moll confront the fact that they're distantly related. You know, because that makes things much more absurd orderly. (See how Burnham had to be related to Spock.)

two people in futuristic clothing sit aboard a brightly-colored spaceship interior

The pacing of this episode, and with the exception of using the Enterprise, when any other Constitution Class starship could've worked — and served to expand the Mirror Universe a little bit — this is an enjoyable episode. It's a shame though that this is following the same cookie cutter seasonal storyline template by relying very much on a quest to follow while having standalone episode-long adventures to fill in the gaps, but hey, it can't be much worse than last season. So, there's that.

The fifth and final season of "Star Trek: Discovery" and every other episode of every "Star Trek" show — with the exception of "Star Trek: Prodigy" — currently streams exclusively on Paramount Plus in the US, while "Prodigy" has found a new home on Netflix.

Internationally, the shows are available on  Paramount Plus  in Australia, Latin America, the UK and South Korea, as well as on Pluto TV in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland on the Pluto TV Sci-Fi channel. They also stream on  Paramount Plus  in Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. In Canada, they air on Bell Media's CTV Sci-Fi Channel and stream on Crave.

Star Trek Prodigy

The “ Star Trek ” Universe is making its permanent home on Paramount Plus , including the premiere of the latest “Trek” iteration, the animated kids series “Star Trek: Prodigy,” ViacomCBS announced during its Investors Day presentation on Wednesday.

Originally conceived for Nickelodeon, “Prodigy,” from Kevin and Dan Hageman (Netflix’s “Trollhunters”), will now premiere on the streamer later in 2021. After its 10-episode run has concluded there, the show — about a coterie of alien kids who commander a seemingly abandoned Starfleet vessel — will air again on the linear Nickelodeon channel. The network also released a first look at the bridge crew from the show, highlighting that none of the main characters on “Prodigy” will be human, a first for a “Trek” series.

The move is part of a wider official strategy of placing every current and former “Trek” TV series on Paramount Plus, including new seasons of “Star Trek: Discovery” and “Star Trek: Lower Decks” which are also set to premiere in 2021.

“It does speak to having a franchise that is unique to Paramount Plus, and we’re very excited about that,” Paramount Plus programming chief Julie McNamara tells Variety. “There is a kind of franchise strategy, which is the notion that if you execute new versions of this really strong IP that you have well, you’re going to drive people across the paywall.”

Popular on Variety

Along with “Prodigy,” “Discovery” and “Lower Decks,” Paramount Plus is also in active production on the second season of “Star Trek: Picard,” and the new series “Star Trek: Brave New Worlds.” It’s the largest expansion of the “Trek” franchise since its inception in 1966, but unlike the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and recent plans for the expansion of the “Star Wars” franchise on Disney Plus, don’t expect these “Trek” series to be unfolding within a closely knit storytelling universe.

“We’re aiming to have our shows feel unique and different from each other,” Alex Kurtzman, the overall executive producer for the “Star Trek” Universe, tells Variety. “We want to give everybody a reason to watch each show.”

While fans will see “interconnectedness” within the shows, Kurtzman says, there aren’t plans to tell a single cohesive story. “That’s a lot of fun, but our goal is not to make it so insular that if you haven’t seen the show you’re lost when you watch another show,” he says.

Kurtzman and McNamara say there are still “conversations” about a new “Star Trek” series around Michelle Yeoh’s Philippa Georgiou and the mysterious Section 31, and there are other “Trek” shows in development that haven’t been previously announced. But they emphasized that the current five-series slate will likely not expand further until at least one of the shows runs its course.

“We’re very careful about curating the pacing — the number of shows at any given time — and what those shows are, so that we make sure that it’s always exciting when there’s a new track show coming out,” says McNamara. The rough schedule, she says, is to debut “a new ‘Trek’ a quarter” on Paramount Plus.

“Whether there’s a show that comes up that feels additive and we should add that into the mix, or waiting for attrition of another ‘Trek’ show, we feel good about where we are,” she says. McNamara said that by “attrition,” she means either a “Trek” show “aging out” naturally, or — in an allusion to 80-year-old “Picard” star Patrick Steward, “perhaps an older lead is only committed to a certain number of seasons and and therefore we move on from that.”

Specifically with “Prodigy,” McNamara says another factor that contributed to the decision to move the show to streaming involved data from Paramount Plus’s predecessor, CBS All Access, that showed subscribers who watched “Trek” shows also watched Nickelodeon’s animated series “The Legend of Korra.”

“It seemed very wise for us to access both the ‘Star Trek’ fan base that’s already on the platform and also kids,” she says. “Those are the two groups that you want to reach.”

At the same time, ViacomCBS didn’t want to lose the opportunity to use “Prodigy” to entice a new generation to become “Star Trek” fans, which drove the decision to re-air the show on Nick.

“It’s a great way to expose children to ‘Star Trek,’ who may be on Nickelodeon to watch other franchises,” said McNamara.

Which Star Trek Shows Are on Paramount+

With five new Star Trek series coming within the year, Paramount+ carries almost the entire franchise. Here's a list of the Trek shows on the service.

Paramount+ is all in on Star Trek , as indicated by the five shows premiering or releasing new seasons in the next six months. It's wisely making earlier Trek series widely available – the five live-action shows produced before 2004 can be found on Netflix, Amazon and Hulu among others – as driver for the new content on their pay site. That makes a lot of Star Trek easily accessible, but not all of it, and with at least a dozen series – plus 13 movies – in the franchise, it’s a lot to sort out.

Paramount+ has the entirety of the various TV series on its service -- though the three Kelvinverse movies are still missing -- which simplifies the equation for subscribers. It’s an impressive list, comprising 50-plus years of pop culture in the same fictional universe and all of the vast social changes reflected along with it. A list of them is presented here in chronological order.

Star Trek (The Original Series), 1967-1969

Creator Gene Roddenberry described the concept as “ Wagon Train to the stars;" a ship in the far future, exploring space and coming to the aid of distant planets. It was a new idea in that it endeavored to tell intelligent science fiction stories aimed at adults rather than the derivative children’s fare that comprised sci-fi television in the 1950s.

It took a colossal effort – with an unprecedented two pilots – and it was cancelled after only three seasons and 79 episodes. But the concept came through. The shows were great, bolstered by a cast of characters who felt more like a family than a ship’s crew, and as reruns played in syndication, viewers discovered its quality.

Star Trek: The Animated Series, 1973-1974

The initial burst of fan interest from The Original Series induced NBC and Gene Roddenberry to develop a Saturday morning follow-up: 30-minute animated shorts that continued the adventures of the Enterprise . Most of the original cast came back to voice their roles, as did the writing staff with Original Series stalwart DC Fontana overseeing the scripts.

The series suffered from cheap animation and often silly storylines, but it included a few gems; notably the Fontana-penned Season 1, Episode 2, “Yesteryear” which established a great deal of the canon surrounding Spock’s childhood.

Star Trek: The Next Generation, 1987-1994

A second Star Trek live-action series, tentatively titled Star Trek: Phase II , had been in the works since the late 1970s. The live-action Star Trek films of the 1980s necessitated changes which eventually resulted in Star Trek: The Next Generation. It featured an entirely new crew and was set 100 years after the events of The Original Series and the movies.

In the process, it firmly established that Star Trek was more than just Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock, and though it struggled in its early years, it soon found its footing and today is often ranked above The Original Series  as far as fan favorites go.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, 1993-1999

“The middle child” between The Next Generation and Star Trek: Voyager was poised to take advantage of the Trek Renaissance of the late '80s and early '90s. It made some bold choices and earned its share of controversy from fans who felt it detracted from Roddenberry’s vision.

It was set on a space station rather than a starship, for starters, and its stories often involved moral compromise and realpolitik, as well as an interstellar war against a new enemy. Its darker tone helped distinguish it from the other Trek series it ran concurrently with, and with Avery Brooks’ Captain Sisko and his family, the show broke new ground for representation on television.

Star Trek: Voyager, 1995-2001

Billed as a return to “classic” Trek themes of exploration and alien life, Voyager served to launch a nascent TV network for Paramount: UPN. Its title spaceship was thrown across the galaxy, stranded thousands of light years from the nearest outpost, and forced to rely on a mixed crew of Starfleet officers and Maquis fugitives to get home.

It featured an array of high-concept standalone stories, as well as a host of new villains. It was topped by a series of extended storylines about the Borg, fleshing out Trek’s sinister space zombies in surprising ways as well as introducing fans to the beloved Seven of Nine.

Star Trek: Enterprise, 2001-2005

Enterprise arrived at the end of the Trek Renaissance. It sent the franchise back to the early days before the founding of the Federation, depicting humanity’s early efforts at space travel and first encounters with such species as the Klingons and the Andorians.

From the beginning, it was bested by problems out of its control, including a premiere scant weeks after the events of September 11 and a shake-up in the corporate offices that ultimately killed the series well before its time. It created a long hiatus for Star Trek TV shows, but like the original series, time allowed it to find a place of respect among the fans.

Star Trek: Discovery, 2017-Current

The first new Star Trek series in over a decade began on the CBS All Access streaming service, which was renamed Paramount+ in 2021. Set a decade before the events of The Original Series , it depicts a Federation starship equipped with a unique propulsion system and engaged in threats against the Federation.

It embraced the multi-episode story arcs similar to that of Deep Space Nine , with each new season entailing an overarching threat or complication in need of solving. It’s also the first Trek series to feature a woman of color in the series lead. Three seasons have aired thus far, with a fourth scheduled to premiere later this year.

Star Trek: Short Treks, 2018-2020

Short Treks was a series of vignettes appearing alongside Star Trek: Discovery, intended to help introduce the new era in the Federation’s history and give viewers an idea of how the show would work.

Each episode ran between eight and 18 minutes, and each one was intended as a standalone story, ranging from the funny to the heartbreaking. It provided the universe with some depth and flavor, as well as serving as a bridge between the second season of Discovery and the premiere of Picard.

Star Trek: Picard, 2020-Current

The success of Discovery fueled an increase in streaming subscriptions, which in turn prompted a steady stream of additional Star Trek content. That began with 2020’s Picard , picking up the titular character 20 years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis.

Though he remains the focus of the series and other Next Generation characters have a cameo, it’s not strictly a sequel to The Next Generation , as Picard assembles a new crew outside of Starfleet’s chain of command to address a mystery surrounding the Romulans and artificial intelligence. A second season is slated for release in 2022, featuring the return of John De Lancie’s mischievous deity Q.

Star Trek: Lower Decks, 2020-Current

In its own way, Lower Decks might be the most daring show Star Trek has ever produced; a half-hour animated comedy from the co-creator of Rick and Morty , with adult themes and content. Inspired by a Next Generation episode of the same name, it shifts attention away from the bridge staff and focuses on the lowly underlings of a Federation starship . It pokes fun at some of the sillier and more illogical corners of the Trek universe, though always with the affection of true fans. A second season is slated to begin on Aug. 11.

Here Are The Star Trek Series Coming to Paramount+ in 2023

It is a very good time to be a Star Trek fan. At just about any given time there is new Star Trek being released on Paramount+. Not since the days when there was Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: Voyager all releasing content in what was then a relatively short amount of time, has there been so much to geek about in the world of Trek.

In 2022 Star Trek released new episodes of Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek Lower Decks, and Star Trek: Prodigy. This is more content than ever and may someday be looked back on as the second golden age of Star Trek. The discussion about what defines the previous golden age will be saved for another post. As 2023 starts, there will be much more Star Trek coming to Paramount+.

Throughout most of the year, there will be new episodes of one Trek series or another. Below is a look at what is currently known to be coming in 2023:

new star trek show paramount plus

Star Trek: Picard – Season 3

Premieres: February 16, 2023

The third and final season of Star Trek: Picard will have Sir Patrick Stewart once again returning as Admiral Jean-Luc Picard. This role he originated in 1987. Now in a much different chapter of life than when he was captain of the Enterprise, Picard is facing some new adventures and challenges from a different seat and perspective. This final season will have Stewart joined by LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, Brent Spiner, Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd.

This season will see Admiral Picard pulling his crew back together to face a new villain named Vadic, portrayed by Amanda Plummer. Daniel Davis will also be returning to his role as Moriarty, the sentient hologram based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous literary villain and foil to Sherlock Holmes. LeVar Burton’s daughter, Mica, has been cast as Georgi LaForge’s youngest daughter Alandra. While the main ship of the season will be the U.S.S. Titan, the Enterprise F is also set to make an appearance.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – Season 2

Premieres: 2023

The second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will have Captain Pike back in the center seat of the Enterprise for more adventures in the pre Captain Kirk era Starfleet history. However, James T. Kirk (as played by Paul Wesley) is expected to be showing up in the second season. There is the possibility of Montgomery “Scotty” Scott appearing in the second season after making a brief cameo at the end of the first season.

The second season of Strange New Worlds will also include a couple of characters from Star Trek: Lower Decks. There will be a crossover episode with Beckett Mariner and Brad Boimler appearing alongside the crew of the Enterprise in their live-action form. They will be portrayed by Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid, who also voice the characters.

Star Trek: Discovery – Season 5

Star Trek: Discovery will be returning for a fifth season. The crew of Discovery are now living in a time that is 900 years after the events of The Original Series. This season will be a race as Discovery’s crew and many others all seek an ancient power. This next season is said to have a change in tone that will be more action and adventure.

Previously, Discovery was racing to save the galaxy from an anomaly and help rebuild the Federation. During this, Captain Burnham’s love interest chose the wrong side of the fight and ended up having to serve time because of it. It is unknown how this will play out in the coming season, but it would be no surprise if the next chapter of their relationship is explored.

Star Trek: Lower Decks

Star Trek: Lower Decks – Season 4

Premieres: 2023 (expected)

Star Trek: Lower Decks will continue to share the exploits of the crew found in the lower decks of the U.S.S. Cerritos. The season wrapped up with the Cerritos and other California -class ships showing their worth as second contact ships over the automated Texas -class ships. It also showed some growth and changes for members of the crew that could have some pretty significant impact on the future of the show.

Lower Decks takes place not just in the lower decks of the Cerritos, but also in many ways the lower decks of the Starfleet itself as the mission of the Cerritos and other California -class ships aren’t viewed as quite as important as other missions in the fleet. This series, however, has some amazing cameos and guest stars that have brought characters like Captain Riker, Zeframe Cochrane, Leah Brahms, Hikaru Sulu, and many more!

An exact release date isn’t known for this series but the initial announcement said it was expected to be sometime in 2023.

new star trek show paramount plus

Star Trek: Prodigy – Season 2

The crew of the U.S.S. Protostar will be back for a second season and more adventures. It was announced earlier this year that Star Trek: Prodigy had been picked up for a second season that should be arriving in 2023. Where the crew of the Protostar will be going and what will be happening to them remains a big mystery. This series has already included new speed capabilities for a Starfleet ship, time travel, and some other new story devices that provide a lot of possibilities for this crew’s future adventures. The crew itself is different than any other Star Trek show to date, all of them being misfits working under the tutelage of a holographic Admiral Janeway. However, as the first season wraps up, this unique crew has also made an ally in the real Admiral Janeway.

It is unknown when exactly season 2 of Star Trek: Prodigy will be arriving on Paramount+ other than sometime in 2023. With the current production schedule, it could also be early 2024.

There are also some Star Trek shows that are in development currently as well. First off is Section 31 , Starfleet’s shady spy organization. Michelle Yeoh is set to star in this series whenever it makes its way to the screen. She plays the Mirror Universe’s Terran Empire, Phillipa Georgiou, who has been redeemed a bit but still can be challenging and dangerous. A timeline for this series’ arrival has not been announced. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is also in the works. Not a lot is known about this show other than it will have cadets at the Academy. It isn’t even known what era the series will take place. It is possible that since Tilly took a job at the recently reopened Starfleet Academy during Star Trek: Discovery that it could take place in the 31st century. However, that is pure speculation.

There is a lot of Star Trek to be enjoyed currently and to also look forward to. While no movies appear to be on the horizon at the moment, there is plenty to enjoy on Paramount+. This includes all the previous Star Trek series and Short Treks. A couple of the movies from the Kelvin timeline are also on the streamer.

Behind the Music (Season 2)

Available on: May 1

Executive produced by: Bruce Gillmer and Michael Maniaci

Cast: Bell Biv DeVoe, Trace Adkins and Wolfgang Van Halen

Based on the original VH1 show from 1997, the Paramount+ reboot of Behind the Music returns for Season 2. Each episode of the documentary series follows a musician or musical group as they recount the highs and lows of their success stories. From their underground days to their rise to popularity, the show offers a behind-the-scenes look into the makings of a superstar. Season 2 profiles Bell Biv DeVoe , a subunit formed by three members of New Edition , country music singer Trace Adkins , and rock musician Wolfgang Van Halen , who’s famously known as the son of the late Eddie Van Halen.

In this season, Behind the Music takes a look at the beginnings of Bell Biv DeVoe. After New Edition’s fame began to plummet in the late ‘80s, members Ronnie DeVoe , Ricky Bell , and Michael Bivins , saw this as a chance to create something fresh under the name Bell Biv DeVoe. Despite their constant falling outs with critics and record execs, the trio managed to win the public with their album “Poison”. As for Adkins, a near-fatal shooting didn’t stop the singer from dominating the country music charts, thanks to his album “Dreamin’ Out Loud”. But following his success, Adkins hit an all-time low with his lackluster sophomore album and bouts of alcoholism. As for Wolfgang, growing up with a rockstar father shaped his love for music. However, when Eddie’s passing in 2020 shook Wolfgang’s world, it was uncertain whether he’d maintain his passion for music ever again. It took a couple of years, but Wolfgang is back with his own sound while ensuring his father’s legacy remains.

Star Trek: Discovery (Season 5 New Episodes)

But Burnham and her crew are not alone in their pursuit . Evil adversaries lurk in the cosmic shadows, driven by a hunger to claim this power for themselves.

Previous seasons of the series explored artists like Jennifer Lopez, Bob Marley, Pink, Boyz II Men, George Michael, and Shania Twain. As the show returns with its third season, artists such as Wolfgang Van Halen, Bell Biv DeVoe, 50 Cent, Sinead O’Connor, and Trace Adkins will be featured and discussed. Star Trek’s Paramount Plus Movies Must Keep Canceled TV Shows Alive

  • Paramount+ can revive canceled Star Trek shows through feature-length streaming films.
  • Characters from Discovery, Picard, and Lower Decks can continue their stories in movies.
  • The success of Star Trek legacy characters in films could pave the way for more spin-offs.

Paramount+ can keep canceled Star Trek shows alive by continuing the characters' adventures in feature-length made-for-streaming films. Although the Star Trek franchise began on television, Star Trek 's 13 theatrical movies provided more adventures with characters from Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation . Not only has the Star Trek franchise often moved from television to film, but Paramount+ has also set this precedent. The upcoming Star Trek: Section 31 starring Michelle Yeoh originally began as a concept for a television series.

Star Trek: Discovery comes to an end with season 5, and Paramount recently announced that the upcoming Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 would also be its last. Star Trek: Picard was always meant to be 3 seasons, but after the success of Picard season 3, fans began clamoring for a spin-off. While Star Trek: Picard season 3 ended with the perfect setup for the fan-desired Star Trek: Legacy , it remains little more than a hope. But made-for-streaming, feature-length films on Paramount+ could bring back the characters from these canceled Star Trek shows, allowing their stories to continue.

Every Star Trek Movie Ranked (From Worst To Best)

Star trek’s paramount plus movies can continue canceled tv shows, the characters of canceled star trek could live on in streaming films..

Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, and Star Trek: Lower Decks all introduced compelling new characters to the Star Trek universe, and it would be a shame never to see those characters again. Michelle Yeoh's Emperor Phillipa Georgiou left Discovery in season 3, but will be the lead in Star Trek: Section 31 , which brings back at least one Star Trek legacy character, a younger version of future USS Enterprise-C Captain Rachel Garrett (Kacey Rohl). If Section 31 proves to be successful, hopefully, Paramount+ will continue this trend with other Star Trek shows and characters.

Star Trek: Section 31 has wrapped filming, and there is talk of a sequel if the streaming movie is successful on Paramount+.

The return of the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast helped make Star Trek: Picard season 3 a resounding success, but the season also introduced several storylines that should continue. With the introduction of Picard's son, Ensign Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), and Seven of Nine's (Jeri Ryan) promotion to Captain of the USS Enterprise-G, Star Trek: Legacy already has a compelling premise. If Paramount+ does not have the budget for another Star Trek television show, a streaming film could provide the chance to continue the story that began in Star Trek: Picard season 3.

Terry Matalas, the showrunner of Star Trek: Picard season 3, has expressed an interest in continuing the story, and many of the cast members would also love to return.

Why Star Trek On Paramount Plus Shouldn’t Abandon Discovery, Picard, & Lower Decks

Paramount+ should find a way to incorporate these characters into new stories..

Star Trek: Discovery's premiere in 2017 ushered in a new era of Star Trek on Paramount+. Discovery and the series that followed, such as Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Lower Decks , introduced numerous new characters that fans have embraced. S tar Trek streaming movies on Paramount+ offer an ideal venue to continue the stories from the concluded Star Trek series in a more cost-effective way than an ongoing series, given the changing streaming business model. Audiences will follow characters they've already invested in to streaming movies that continue their stories,

The Strange New Worlds/Star Trek: Lower Decks crossover also proved that characters can jump from one show to another, and Paramount+ will hopefully find new ways to continue this trend. Jack Quaid's Brad Boimler and Tawny Newsome's Beckett Mariner are great characters who should continue to be a part of Star Trek . The fan demand for Star Trek: Picard spin-off Star Trek: Legacy proves that fans want more Star Trek , especially when it connects to past Trek shows and characters. Whether with crossovers or mini-series or made-for-streaming movies, Paramount+ shouldn't abandon beloved characters of their canceled Star Trek shows.

Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, and Star Trek: Lower Decks are available to stream on Paramount+.
