Experience Wildlife After Dark During Nighttime Zoo at the San Diego Zoo

Guests Are Invited to Stay Late May 26 through Sept. 4 for Spectacular Festivities and Unique Wildlife Encounters

SAN DIEGO (May 19, 2023)  – Bedtime can wait this summer, when the San Diego Zoo brings back its annual after-dark extravaganza—Nighttime Zoo. From May 26 through Sept. 4, guests can explore the Zoo at night and enjoy a host of family friendly entertainment, live toe-tapping music and extraordinary summer treats, while learning more about wildlife from an unusual nighttime perspective.

The festivities begin at 4 p.m. daily, and guests can move through the Zoo accompanied by live music from a variety of performers, including the Rock & Roar band and the ever-changing Chameleons. Keep the fun rolling with family favorites including Zoolamoves and "Dr. Zoolittle's Exploration Station,” where the zany wildlife explorer will delight all ages with his wacky and educational antics. In "Bounce Back to the Outback," a talented group of trampoline acrobats will defy gravity and astound guests; and at Africa Rocks, guests can enjoy more acrobatics, along with traditional African beats.

Before the gates close each evening, two dazzling events will light up the night. "Call of the Night"—a thrilling, 12-minute symphony of live music, lasers, moving lights, rhythmic acrobats, fog and bubbles—will be presented nightly at Hua Mei Plaza; and "Jambo Dunia!," a 15 -minute spectacular celebrating Africa along Front Street, will be led by the Chameleons, including music and festive pageantry with giant, handcrafted puppets.

While attending Nighttime Zoo, explorers of all ages can also enjoy the new Denny Sanford Wildlife Explorers Basecamp. The 3.2-acre environment blends immersive technology with opportunities to check out unique wildlife species, and it's designed to serve as a launch pad for budding conservationists. Wildlife Explorers Basecamp is divided into four habitat zones: Rainforest, Wild Woods, Marsh Meadows and Desert Dunes. Nighttime Zoo visitors will have a chance to see their favorite nocturnal wildlife from each habitat when they're most active, including caimans, an ocelot, a tamandua, a prehensile-tailed porcupine, scorpions, a coconut crab, fennec foxes, and more!

With every visit to Nighttime Zoo this summer, guests become allies for wildlife—because each visit helps support San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance's mission to save wildlife worldwide and help create a world where all life thrives.

Nighttime Zoo runs through Sept. 4, with special activities starting daily at 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. Nighttime Zoo activities and attractions are free with Zoo admission or membership. For more information about Nighttime Zoo, visit  sdzwa.org .

Did you know there are exciting opportunities to visit the zoo at night?

Sunset safaris.

night visit zoo

Experience the zoo while the sun is setting – some animals will be settling down to sleep, while the nocturnal animals will start their nightly activities. Join our guides who will inform you about animals, nature, the environment and ecology: the fantastic hearing abilities of bat-eared foxes, the role jackals play in the ecosystem, the hunting strategy of cheetahs, the intricate social interactions of wild dogs, the conservation crisis that rhinos are currently experiencing and other intriguing facets.

Please meet your guide at the National Zoo’s service entrance in Boom Street, Pretoria, by no later than 18h30. He will accompany you to your venue (see below) and then take you on a one-hour walking safari. On return to your venue, the braai fires will be ready for you to eat and enjoy the rest of the evening. Please vacate the premises by 23h30.

The National Zoo will provide a venue with table-and-bench units (except at the Hippo Lapa), braai stands and charcoal. Please provide your own food, drinks, other refreshments as well as crockery and cutlery.

Sunset Safaris take place on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 1 September to 31 March.

Zoo Camps are similar to the Sunset Safaris listed above with the important difference that you may camp in the zoo for the night.

Please meet your guide at the National Zoo’s service entrance in Boom Street, Pretoria, by no later than 17h30. He will accompany you to your venue (please see below) and allow you to set up your tents and other camping gear. He will then take you on a one-hour walking safari. On safari, the guide will inform you about animals, nature, the environment and ecology: the fantastic hearing abilities of bat-eared foxes, the role jackals play in the ecosystem, the hunting strategy of cheetahs, the intricate social interactions of wild dogs, the conservation crisis that rhinos are currently experiencing and other intriguing facets.

On return to your venue, the braai fires will be ready for you to eat, enjoy the rest of the evening and settle down for the night. Please vacate the premises by 7h30 the next morning.

The National Zoo will provide a venue with table-and-bench units, braai stands and charcoal. A lawn will be available for your tents. Please provide your own food, drinks, other refreshments, crockery and cutlery as well as all camping equipment, such as tents, mattresses, sleeping bags, etc. Do not forget breakfast the next morning. Electricity is available to boil water – please bring your own kettle or urn.

Zoo Camps take place on Fridays and Saturdays from 1 September to 31 March.

We have the following venues available for your consideration:

Farm Yard Lapa

The Farm Yard Lapa is a large thatched roof facility (8.5 m x 15 m) on the zoo’s farm. It is available for groups between 45 and 90 people. It has 10 table-bench units which are movable, allowing a group to arrange the area to their liking. An adjacent roofed area allows for braaing even in the event of rain. A bonfire stand is available – please bring your own wood. The large lawn on the farm makes this an ideal area for larger groups, especially those who would like to camp for the night. Electric lights and plugs are available.

A block of toilets is situated on the western side of the farm, about 150 m from the Farm Yard Lapa. No showers or other washing facilities are available.

The Farm Yard Lapa may be booked for both Sunset Safaris and Zoo Camps.

Farm Yard Barn

This barn (8.5 m x 12 m) is also situated on the zoo’s farm and is available for groups between 15 and 30 people. It has 4 table-bench units as well as a bonfire stand – please supply your own wood. The braai stand is outside, but may be moved into the barn in the event of rain. Electric lights and plugs are available. The lawn is ideal for camping.

A block of toilets is situated on the western side of the farm, about 150 m from the Farm Yard Barn. No showers or other washing facilities are available.

The Farm Yard Barn may be booked for both Sunset Safaris and Zoo Camps.

Anteater Nest

This venue is situated next to the zoo’s giant anteaters from South America. It covers an area of 4.5 m x 11 m, has 3 table-bench units and is available for groups between 15 and 30 people. The braai stand is outside. Electric lights and plugs are available. The lawn is ideal for camping.

A block of toilets is situated close by, about 150 m from the Anteater Nest. No showers or other washing facilities are available.

The Anteater Nest may be booked for both Sunset Safaris and Zoo Camps.

This thatched roof lapa is situated next to the zoo’s hippo enclosure and has a unique atmosphere. It covers an area of 8 m x 14 m and has a table top as well as a braai stand. Please provide your own camping chairs. Electric lights and plugs are available. It is available for groups between 15 and 30 people.

A block of toilets is situated close by, about 50 m from the Hippo Lapa. No showers or other washing facilities are available.

The Hippo Lapa may be booked for Sunset Safaris only.

Apies River Arena

This area is next to the famous Apies River. As this open lawn does not have any shelter, the nearby owl house may be used as protection from rain. It has 3 table-bench units as well as a braai stand and is available for groups between 15 and 30 people. Electric lights and plugs are available.

A block of toilets is situated next to the lawn. No showers or other washing facilities are available.

The Apies River Arena may be booked for Sunset Safaris only.

Booking a night visit

Please note that you need to book the number of people, the type of activity and the venue simultaneously, e.g. “12 adults and 6 children for a Sunset Safari, using the Hippo Lapa” or “9 adults and 8 children for Zoo Camp, using the Anteater Nest”.

Grab yourself a tipple from one of our pop-up watering holes and explore the Zoo at dusk. It’s the best time of the day to see some of our animals, as many of them become more active in the evening. Plus, experience some of the rarest and most unique reptiles and amphibians on Earth in our brand-new exhibit The Secret Life of Reptiles and Amphibians .

Find out what our animals really get up to after dark with a Birds and The Bees guided tour*, then learn more about their bathroom habits with The Origin of the Faeces exhibition!

Why not make the evening extra special with a glass of bubbly overlooking our black and white flippered friends at Penguin Beach?*

Once you’ve worked up an appetite, discover our Wild Bites street food market serving up fantastic flavours from across the globe. Packed with some of London’s finest pop-ups, there’s plenty of choice for herbivores and carnivores.

A hand scatters a crunchy brown topping onto a packed food box filled with vibrant red chillies, green spring onions, rice and a glossy brown sauce.

Chill out on the lawns and enjoy your food, surrounded by relaxing music and our incredible animals. And of course, our Zoo shop will be open late for all those must-have purchases and mementos.

What last year's visitors said

Cannot recommend this night enough! Had such an amazing time seeing all the animals (with no kids around!) and the atmosphere was great.
Food was excellent, atmosphere fun, loads of happy friendly people. Saw loads of animals before their bedtime and it was nice to wander around the zoo when some of the animals were a bit more active than they are in the daytime.
We absolutely loved the evening! It was such a refreshing change to visit a zoo without children. The atmosphere was so calm and peaceful, and everyone could enjoy the zoo, letting out their inner child. Excellent experience!

Great adventure for all ages. We took "giraffe and good night " night tour. It is amazing experience to touch rhino and to watch giraffe so close

Bring your walking shoes, sunscreen, water, and hat! We were there in 95 F degree heat and had a great time. First, take the train to get a general idea of the layout of the zoo, then go back and visit the kangaroos, lions, tigers, hippos, giraffes, penguins, fish....All the animals seemed to be in appropriate habitats and did not look stressed. It's a great zoo...

As you may see from my other reviews, I'm a zoo person. I visit the local zoo whenever I travel. The Biblical Zoo impressed me with its flow; it's a simple loop, but is big enough and varied enough that you don't feel like you're just walking in a circle. Visiting by myself, I was able to see, at a meandering pace, the entire zoo in about 2 hours. The enclosures are nice and the animals were active. On a nice day, this is a great way to soak up some sun and see a variety of animals. Very worth the visit!

My entire family enjoyed our visit to the zoo yesterday. It is shady and very pleasant to walk around. Unlike other zoos, where it is hard to see the animals, all of the animals were clearly visible. There is a big playground in the zoo for kids to take a break from seeing the animals. highly recommended!

The Zoo is accomodating to all people of all ages. All members of the staff go out of the way to help and assist anyone looking like they need help. THe exhibits are friendly to families and there is food should you become hungry. It is an easy cab ride or a challenging walk and worth the effort.

It is amzing and wonderful It is not to say in words place to visit only can enjoy ........wow and many people miles but few people are dislike because of their uninterest

Experience wildlife after dark during Nighttime Zoo at the San Diego Zoo

night visit zoo

By SDCN Editor

San Diego, CA–The San Diego Zoo brings back its annual after-dark extravaganza—Nighttime Zoo this month.

From May 26 through Sept. 4, guests can explore the zoo at night and enjoy a host of family-friendly entertainment, live music, and summer treats, while learning more about wildlife from an unusual nighttime perspective.

The festivities begin at 4 p.m. daily, and guests can move through the zoo accompanied by live music from a variety of performers, including the Rock and Roar band and the ever-changing Chameleons.

Wildlife explorer, The Zoolamoves and “Dr. Zoolittle’s Exploration Station,” will delight all ages with his wacky and educational antics. In “Bounce Back to the Outback,” a talented group of trampoline acrobats will defy gravity and astound guests; and at Africa Rocks, guests can enjoy more acrobatics, along with traditional African beats.

Before the gates close each evening, two dazzling events will light up the night. “Call of the Night”—a thrilling, 12-minute symphony of live music, lasers, moving lights, rhythmic acrobats, fog, and bubbles—will be presented nightly at Hua Mei Plaza; and “Jambo Dunia!,” a 15-minute spectacular celebrating Africa along Front Street, will be led by the Chameleons, including music and festive pageantry with giant, handcrafted puppets.

While attending Nighttime Zoo, explorers of all ages can also enjoy the new Denny Sanford Wildlife Explorers Basecamp. The 3.2-acre environment blends immersive technology with opportunities to check out unique wildlife species, and it’s designed to serve as a launch pad for budding conservationists. Wildlife Explorers Basecamp is divided into four habitat hizones: Rainforest, Wild Woods, Marsh Meadows and Desert Dunes. Visitors will have a chance to see their favorite nocturnal wildlife from each habitat when they’re most active, including caimans, an ocelot, a tamandua, a prehensile-tailed porcupine, scorpions, a coconut crab, fennec foxes, and other animals.

With every visit to Nighttime Zoo this summer, guests become allies for wildlife—because each visit helps support San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance’s mission to save wildlife worldwide and help create a world where all life thrives.

Nighttime Zoo runs through Sept. 4, with special activities starting daily at 4 p.m.   9 p.m. Activities and attractions are free with zoo admission or membership.

Moscow Sky Lights Up With Strange Glow After Explosion at Electrical Substation: Reports

N ew footage has emerged showing bright flashes lighting up the night sky in southern Moscow during the early morning hours of November 22.

Knewz.com has learned that there was an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of Russia's capital city followed by an alleged power outage in "several" homes.

Video snippets, shared on Russian news channels like ASTRA , captured a series of flashes that caused the sky to change color. Smoke could also be seen rising from a building.

Corroborating the video, several Russian Telegram accounts reported an explosion near the south of Moscow and a subsequent fire at the Lyublino electrical substation, southeast of central Moscow, per Newsweek .

The local authorities from the area have since confirmed that an explosion occurred in the village of Molokovo, but they reassured the public that all vital facilities were operating as normal.

Russian outlet MSK1.ru reported the blaze at the substation and noted “several” power outages.

The town of Lytkarino, located to the southeast of Moscow, was one of the affected areas, as reported by the independent outlet, Meduza .

Additional power failures were reported in the southern Domodedovo section of the city. However, electricity was later restored to these areas.

One local resident speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but additional sources are yet to support this theory.

Newsweek reported that messages on the ASTRA Telegram account run by independent Russian journalists showed residents near the substation panicking. One concerned Russian called it a "nightmare."

The incident follows an attack by Russia on a power station in southwestern Ukraine that left 2,000 people without electricity .

Knewz.com reported previously:

“ Russian forces launched a total of 38 Iranian-made Shahed-136/131 drones during the later hours of November 17 and 18.

The Ukrainian Air Force Command reported that 29 of these drones were shot down [...].

One civilian was injured as a result of the attack that targeted energy infrastructure in the southwestern Odesa Oblast.”

The assault came after repeated warnings by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky that Russia would try to cripple its power grid as winter approaches.

Ukraine's leader warned that if Russia resorted to attacking its power utilities, it would respond in kind.

Ukraine has conducted numerous long-range aerial drone strikes on Moscow since May 2023.

Most recently on November 20, it was reported that one such incursion was intercepted close to the city, per Kyiv Post .

Moscow’s Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed this and elaborated that the region's air defense systems intercepted the unmanned craft over the city of Elektrostal to the east of Moscow, as well as another over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow.

The details of the recently surfaced video footage have yet to be independently verified.

When the additional 491 volunteers in other categories are included, including City volunteers, community service, general, research, and specialist volunteers, the total service hours donated at the Zoo were 61,300. The next time you visit the Zoo and see a volunteer, please offer them a heartfelt “thank you” for their valuable service and their positive impact on visitors’ Zoo experiences.

Looking ahead, we hope you will join us for our annual Beastly Ball the evening of June 1. It’s the Zoo’s largest fundraiser and the “wildest” party in Los Angeles! The evening’s program will feature actor, comedian, and host Joel McHale. Mr. McHale will emcee the fund-a-need paddle raise to support the Zoo’s Conservation Grant program, with proceeds going to the Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education Center (GRACE) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Zoo Director and CEO Denise Verret serves on the GRACE board of directors. GLAZA has secured a matching gift that will inspire donors and ensure the success of this initiative.

We hope you will join us and make it a night to remember! Detroit Lions Recorded Massive Sales of New Uniform

New Lions uniform was purchased at a high rate on night one.

  • Author: John Maakaron

In this story:

The Detroit Lions new NFL uniform is a massive hit.

Even after the new uniform was leaked by Fanatics hours before a season-ticket member event at Ford Field, supporters flocked to Detroit's home stadium to witness the reveal of the complete uniform.

After the event, which featured appearances by Sheila Hamp, Dan Campbell, Rod Wood, supporters purchased the new uniform at the event and online.

According to Sports Illustrated , "It’s fair to say, too, that they’ve gone over well. The Lions did more than $1 million in sales between the stadium store and online purchases the night the jerseys were unveiled. And shoutout to Campbell—5,400 black jerseys sold at the team’s pro shop alone on the night of the release."

The majority of the reviews have been quite favorable, with supporters highlighting the modern look on the team's past uniform.

“The main thing is we wanted to honor our colors with a modern twist,” Lions president Rod Wood told Albert Breer . “We’d tired of the gray jerseys. And with the home jerseys, we wanted to go back to the block white numbers. The current ones looked cool, too, but it was hard to see the numbers if you were sitting in the stadium. So this was a way to honor the past and make them better for the fans.”

All weekend, fans shared their purchase of Aidan Hutchinson , Penei Sewell, Jahmyr Gibbs, Jared Goff and Amon-Ra St. Brown jerseys online.

Players even took to social media to wonder how stores could stock more of their own jerseys for friends and family to purchase.

Caught up with Bobby as we were leaving! Like most fans, left happy and enjoyed the evening. He got St. Brown jersey. Sheila said it #Trophy pic.twitter.com/3xUv75mIj8 — DetroitSportsPodcast (@DetroitPodcast) April 19, 2024

Recently arrested Morgan Wallen says he's 'not proud' of behavior

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Country music star  Morgan Wallen , who faces charges stemming in part from accusations that he threw a chair off the rooftop of a six-story bar, says he’s “not proud” of his behavior and accepts responsibility.

The “One Thing at a Time” singer responded publicly Friday night on social media to  his arrest in Nashville two weeks ago.  He faces a May 3 court date after being charged with three felony counts of reckless endangerment and one misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct, court records show.

An arrest affidavit said the chair at Chief’s bar landed about 3 feet (1 meter) from officers, who talked to witnesses and reviewed security footage. Witnesses told officers that they watched Wallen pick up a chair, throw it over the roof and laugh about it. Wallen was booked early April 8 and released.

“I didn’t feel right publicly checking in until I made amends with some folks. I’ve touched base with Nashville law enforcement, my family, and the good people at Chief’s. I’m not proud of my behavior, and I accept responsibility,” Wallen wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Wallen, one of the biggest names in contemporary country, is currently on a stadium tour, including a concert scheduled for Saturday at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Mississippi.

“I have the utmost respect for the officers working every day to keep us all safe. Regarding my tour, there will be no change,” his message said, signed "-MW."

The “One Thing at a Time” album spent 16 weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 in 2023 and was the most-consumed album in the U.S. last year. Top 10 hits from the album included “Last Night,” “You Proof” and “Thinkin’ Bout Me.”

In 2021, the country singer was suspended indefinitely from his label after video surfaced of him shouting a racial slur. In 2020, he was arrested on public intoxication and disorderly conduct charges after being kicked out of Kid Rock’s bar in downtown Nashville.

UK passes bill to send asylum seekers to Rwanda

Lawyers prepare for legal battles on behalf of individual asylum seekers challenging removal to east Africa

  • How the UK government’s Rwanda deportation plan was fought in court

Rishi Sunak’s Rwanda deportation bill will become law after peers eventually backed down on amending it, opening the way for legal battles over the potential removal of dozens of people seeking asylum.

After a marathon battle of “ping pong” over the key legislation between the Commons and the Lords, the bill finally passed when opposition and crossbench peers gave way on Monday night.

The bill is expected to be granted royal assent on Tuesday. Home Office sources said they have already identified a group of asylum seekers with weak legal claims to remain in the UK who will be part of the first tranche to be sent to east Africa in July.

Sunak has put the bill, which would deport asylum seekers who arrive in the UK by irregular means to Kigali, at the centre of his attempts to stop small boats crossing the Channel.

The home secretary, James Cleverly, said it was a “landmark moment in our plan to stop the boats”.

In a video posted to social media, he said: “The safety of Rwanda bill has passed in parliament and it will become law within days.

“The act will prevent people from abusing the law by using false human rights claims to block removals. And it makes clear that the UK parliament is sovereign, giving government the power to reject interim blocking measures imposed by European courts.

“I promised to do what was necessary to clear the path for the first flight. That’s what we have done. Now we’re working day in and day out to get flights off the ground.”

Denisa Delić, director of advocacy at International Rescue Committee UK, said on Monday: “Irrespective of today’s passage of the safety of Rwanda bill, sending refugees to Rwanda is an ineffective, unnecessarily cruel and costly approach.

“Rather than outsourcing its responsibilities under international law, we urge the government to abandon this misguided plan and instead focus on delivering a more humane and orderly immigration system at home.

“This includes scaling up safe routes, such as resettlement and family reunion, and upholding the right to seek asylum.”

The Home Office has whittled the list down to 350 migrants who are deemed to pose the least risk of submitting successful legal challenges blocking their deportation.

Lawyers have told the Guardian that they will prepare legal challenges on behalf of individual asylum seekers. They can challenge their removal on a case-by-case basis, which could lead to their being taken off a flight list.

The bill allows challenges if a detainee faces a “real, imminent and foreseeable risk of serious irreversible harm if removed to Rwanda”.

They must lodge an appeal within eight days of receiving a deportation letter. The Home Office would then be given several days to respond. If their appeal is rejected, the person claiming asylum will then be given seven days to lodge a final appeal to an upper tribunal court, which will decide their claim within a further 23 days.

The deal will cost £1.8m for each of the first 300 deportees, the National Audit Office has confirmed.

Matthew Rycroft, the most senior civil servant in the Home Office who has overseen the scheme for two years, previously told MPs he did not have evidence to show that it had a deterrent effect that would make it value for money.

Home Office staff have privately warned that there is a risk of thousands of asylum seekers disappearing once removals begin, keen to avoid receiving notification that they are being sent to Kigali.

after newsletter promotion

Earlier, MPs stripped out amendments to the bill inserted by the Lords. Crossbench and Labour peers said they would reinsert similar changes in a battle of wills.

The government will not send those who are eligible under the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (Arap) to Rwanda, a Home Office minister told peers during one of the many debates held on Monday evening.

Lord Sharpe said: “Once this review of Arap decisions for those with credible links to Afghan specialist units has concluded, the government will not remove to Rwanda those who received a positive eligibility decision as a result of this review where they are already in the UK as of today.”

Lord Browne, a Labour former defence secretary who had been leading calls for such an assurance, said: “The minister does not believe this to be a concession, it is to him a restatement of what he has been telling us for some time, but in a different form.”

Meanwhile, leading lawyer and independent crossbencher Lord Anderson of Ipswich said of the Rwanda scheme: “Its benefits remain to be seen. Its costs will be measured, not only in money, but in principles debased: disregard for our international commitments, avoiding statutory protections for the vulnerable, and the removal of judicial scrutiny over the core issue of the safety of Rwanda.”

The prime minister also disclosed that the first flights removing asylum seekers to Rwanda were planned to depart in 10 to 12 weeks, missing his original spring target .

At a specially convened press conference on Monday morning, he said the government would “not let a foreign court” block flights to Rwanda and stressed that he would finally end the “legal merry-go-round” associated with deportation flights.

“Enough is enough,” he said. “No more prevarication, no more delay. Parliament will sit there tonight and vote no matter how late it goes. No ifs, no buts. These flights are going to Rwanda.”

Labour said Sunak was wrong to blame the party’s peers for delaying the Rwanda bill.

Yvette Cooper, the shadow home secretary, said: “[The] Tories are the largest party in both Houses of Parliament and they could have scheduled the final stages of the bill a month ago but they voluntarily delayed it because they always want someone else to blame.”
