a perfect experience!

This is by far the best hotel experience of my life. I was treated like royalty from the time our driver dropped us off to the time we left. This is truly what I think of when I think 5 star+ should be. The Saigon Restaurant is remarkable. Its Asian fusion delites were once in a lifetime memorable. I wish all hotels could be like this one.

My experience overall has been excellent. The hotel and facilities excellent. One of the best hotel hymns I’ve seen. Room excellent, food very good. My only criticism is some of waiting staff of very poor standard in terms of knowledge about product and service, poor understanding and very slow response times.

The best hotels in Cairo

By Jake Emen

Marriott Mena House Cairo

The sprawl of modern Cairo is juxtaposed with the wondrous antiquities and sites concentrated around the Giza pyramid complex, headlined by the Great Pyramids and Sphinx of Giza . Together, Cairo and Giza are two halves of one whole, the enormous greater Cairo metropolitan area. The Nile slices between the city's two sides, a fitting divide between past and present by a waterway that defined so much of life for the ancient Egyptians. Wherever in Cairo visitors choose to rest their heads, though, there are indulgent accommodations that, some might say, are fit for a pharaoh.

Sofitel Cairo El Gezirah

Sofitel Cairo El Gezirah is located at the bottom tip of Gezira, a sliver of an island surrounded by the Nile. Also known as Zamalek, the island was cut apart from the Nile's west bank in the mid-to-late 19th century and designed as a lush garden oasis. The desert-hued, 27-storey tower of the Sofitel is instantly recognisable across the city, with a cylindrical structure ensuring that all 433 rooms have a prime view of their surroundings.

Address: Sofitel Cairo El Gezirah, 3 El Thawra Council St Zamalek, El Orman, Cairo Governorate 11518, Egypt

Kempinski Nile Cairo Garden City

A large, light-filled atrium serves as the central hub of the Kempinski Nile Cairo Garden City , with corridors decorated with art and stonework that echo ancient Egyptian motifs. There are plenty of ways to kick back and relax, whether in the lobby coffee and dessert lounge, the rooftop pool and bar, the swanky jazz bar or the hotel’s dedicated wellness centre. Rooms offer expansive Nile views from the hotel's vantage point on the Cairo side of the river.

Address: Kempinski Nile Cairo Garden City, 12 Ahmed Ragheb, Qasr El Nil, Cairo Governorate 4272050, Egypt

Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at The First Residence Cairo

Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at The First Residence, Cairo Arrow

There are two Four Seasons in Cairo, with the First Residence property positioned amid the large urban green space of the Orman Garden and Giza Zoo. This hotel is the more opulent of the two and is home to the First Nile Boat, a docked vessel with a handful of restaurants and bars. The hotel’s old world decor is complemented by a large outdoor pool deck and a spa with amenities that include a Turkish hammam.

Address: Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at The First Residence, 35 Giza St, Oula, Giza District, Giza Governorate 12612, Egypt

Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at Nile Plaza

Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at Nile Plaza

The second of the two Four Seasons is on the eastern, Cairo side of the river and is the larger of the two, with 10 dining venues that include a shisha lounge, Italian and Chinese restaurants, and Zitouni, a highly regarded authentic Egyptian restaurant with Nile views. A large, tiered outdoor pool deck is the main attraction, though there's also an indoor, glass-ceilinged pool, along with a large spa and wellness centre. A prominent collection of contemporary Egyptian artwork is peppered across the hotel.

Address: Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at Nile Plaza, 1089 Nile Corniche, El Nil, Cairo Governorate 11519, Egypt

The Royal Suite at St Regis Cairo

The St Regis Cairo

The St. Regis Cairo is housed within a grand 36-storey tower abutting the Nile. The property is more geared towards long-term and business travellers, who can take advantage of St Regis butler service or signature rituals throughout the day – the hotel’s riff on the famed St Regis Bloody Mary, for instance, is the Hibiscus Mary, which pays homage to the hibiscus juice and tea that were reportedly popular with the pharaohs.

Address: St Regis Cairo, 1189 Nile Corniche, Boulaq Num.5, Bulaq, Cairo Governorate 11221, Egypt

Fairmont Nile City hotel Cairo

Fairmont Nile City Hotel Arrow

Of the long line of high-end hotels on the waterfront on the eastern, Cairo side of the Nile, Fairmont Nile City is the northernmost, aligned with the top tip of Zamalek. A collection of 531 rooms is spread across 25 floors, with Art Deco styling mixed in with modern touches. Fairmont Gold guests receive perks such as 24-hour butler service, afternoon tea and access to an evening bar. A lineup of seven dining venues ranges from a champagne bar and lounge to Bab El Nil, a Middle Eastern restaurant that hosts lively belly dance shows.

Address: Fairmont Nile City Hotel, Nile City Towers، 2005 B Corniche, Boulaq 1، El Nil, Cairo Governorate 11311, Egypt

Marriott Mena House Cairo

Marriott Mena House Arrow

Marriott Mena House opened in 1886 and has remained one of the region's top hotels ever since. When it comes to location, arguably nobody has it better than Mena House. The landmark property is directly adjacent to the Giza pyramid complex; guests can stroll out of its rear glass doors and be welcomed with an immediate view of the breathtaking, and startlingly close-by, ancient wonders. Notably name-dropped in Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile , the hotel’s interior celebrates its heritage with vintage photographs dotted across its public spaces.

Address: 6 Pyramids Road Cairo، 12556, Egypt

The Nile RitzCarlton Cairo

The Nile Ritz-Carlton Arrow

The Nile Ritz-Carlton, Cairo has a prime downtown position, with the Nile to one side and The Egyptian Museum to the other. With 331 rooms and 50 suites, as well as the immersive Nile Spa and nine on-site restaurants and bars, it's the type of enormous yet elegant city hotel that rarely gets built any more.

Address: 1113 Nile Corniche, Ismailia, El Nil, Cairo Governorate 11221, Egypt

Royal Suite at The Conrad Cairo

Conrad Cairo Arrow

Conrad Cairo opened in 1998 along the Nile's eastern bank, in a 24-storey tower with 614 rooms in contemporary, colourful style. Accommodations have either total or partial Nile views, with some also fitted with balconies. Half a dozen dining venues are headlined by the Egyptian and Lebanese fare of the Jayda Nile Terrace, the international cuisine of Oak, and Kamala, a pan-Asian restaurant. The property has a large resort pool deck and wellness amenities, including sauna and steam rooms, as well as a large in-house casino.

Alico Egypt fabricated and supplied the majority of the architectural aluminium and glass for the complex buildings.

The two main towers, which were completed in 2001 and 2002, respectively, make full use of the entire range of Schuco systems curtain walling and facade products. The project included FW 50 structural glazed curtain walls, as well as skylights with cladding panels integrated within the curtain walls and skylights, giving the towers a unique shape. Works also included full use of Alico’s systems for doors and windows in addition to heavy duty revolving doors for the podium main entrance.

The basement of the complex contains four floors of parking, with 1,200 car parking places, and technical rooms. The South Tower apartments have a private parking area on basement level -1.

The hotel operators also have a dedicated parking area on this level. Restricted areas of the basement -1 to -3 are designated for hotel use only.

The rest of the available parking area of the basement levels -1 to -3, and the whole of level -4 is shared by the comlex’s offices and shopping mall tenants.

These different parking areas can be physically separated to ensure maximum privacy and safety. Parking for the North Tower offices, hotel and public use is accessible from the Nile Corniche by another ramp with in and out lanes, and from the back by two in and out ramps.

From the parking levels, the ground floor of the complex is accessible by lifts and stairs. Different lifts, or banks of lifts, give access to different parts of the complex.

Historic Palace Hotels of the Nile

View of feluccas sailing from our palace cataract suite balcony, sofitel legend old cataract, aswan - andrew harper editor.

In addition to pioneering riverboat tourism on the Nile, Thomas Cook built two remarkable hotels on its banks around the turn of the 20th century: the Winter Palace in Luxor and the Cataract (now called the Old Cataract) in Aswan . Wealthy Europeans would escape the cold and spend weeks at a time there. As a 1911 travelogue about Egypt put it, “The soft air and golden light of the Egyptian winter make everything seem like a dream.”

The Winter Palace and Old Cataract provide bookends for most Nile cruises. If you plan to sail between Luxor or Aswan, it will likely be necessary to spend at least a night in a hotel before you board your ship. (The two cities are only 115 miles apart by river, but a usual cruise lasts between three and five days.) On this trip, we started our journey in Luxor. The city — known as Thebes in antiquity — and the surrounding area boast some of the most extraordinary ancient sites in the world, not least the massive temples of Luxor and Karnak. We saw the major attractions over the course of two days as part of our cruise, but it would be rewarding to spend a day or two more exploring the region.

Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor

On my last visit to Luxor, I reviewed Al Moudira, a boutique property on the quieter west bank of the Nile, convenient for touring the dazzling tombs in the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens, as well as the dramatic mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut. But though this charming and idiosyncratic hotel has a strong sense of place, it’s not an ideal choice for a first-time visitor to the area. I therefore decided to give the 92-room Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor another try. Near the Temple of Luxor, the historic hotel building stands between the Nile Corniche and palm-filled gardens centerpieced by a large swimming pool. (The modern Pavillon Winter Luxor hotel shares the gardens and pool with the Winter Palace.) Although the building needed freshening when I’d stayed years ago, and I’d heard no reports of a renovation, I hoped for a pleasant surprise.

Khaled Abbas, Chairman and Managing Director of the Administrative Capital Company, witnessed the launching ceremony of Nile Developments – the first specialized Egyptian company in developing skyscrapers – launching “Tycoon Tower”, Africa’s highest hotel, poised to become one of the most recognizable landmarks in Downtown New Administrative Capital.

The ceremony, which took place at the St. Regis Almasa Hotel, New Administrative Capital (NAC), witnessed the attendance of real estate and tourism industries’ leaders alongside art and media public figures, who indulged themselves in a mind-blowing performance of mega star Amr Diab.

Abbas stated that “the Administrative Capital is in constant contact with all the developers to overcome all difficulties, stressing that everyone cooperating to complete the giant national project, which is considered the most prominent feature of the new republic launched by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi”.

Abbas stressed “the importance of attracting foreign investments, stressing on providing all means of support for them to enter the Egyptian real estate market, especially the New Administrative Capital project.”

He ensured that the New Administrative Capital project is not only a real estate project, but also opens new horizons for investment in many other economic sectors and investment in the education, health and infrastructure sectors.

During the event, Mohamed Taher, Chairman of Nile Developments, revealed a new partnership with Millennium Hotels and Resorts, to operate and manage “Tycoon Tower” hotel – a global hotel group with over 150 hotels around the world, and entering Egypt and the Africa for the first time.

Taher stated: “Tycoon Tower is 233 meters high, and it is an exceptional real estate project that will set a new global standard as Africa’s highest hotel. The new hotel – one of Nile Business City towers and the largest project of Nile Developments so far- is deemed as a historical addition to NAC’s Downtown area.”

He also pointed out that Nile Developments is the first Egyptian private real estate developer to specialize in developing skyscrapers, which started its operations in 2021 in NAC’s Downtown area, adding that the company has studied the return on investment (ROI) of such projects and found that buildings of 60 floor height at maximum have a large economic return and is an added value for buyers.

Alongside the ban, the city is hoping to limit hotel stays by tourists to fewer than 20 million a year, The New York Times noted. Prior to the pandemic, Amsterdam experienced 25.2 million hotel stays in 2019, according to city data cited by the newspaper. Last year, that number was even higher—not even including stays in Airbnbs or on cruise ships.

“The effect won’t be very big,” Ko Koens, a professor of new urban tourism in Rotterdam, told the Times . But “without such a stop, Amsterdam’s center would become one big hotel. . .You don’t want that either.”

Koens added that the limited supply may make hotels in the city more expensive in the future, which could in turn deter visitors. Right now, the city has 42,000 hotel rooms that can hold 92,000 people, according to Statistics Netherlands data cited by the newspaper. Twenty-six more hotels have already been approved to open, which will add to that total. But beyond that, new hotels will only be able to open if another property closes, and the newer hotel can’t have more rooms than were previously available.

That deals a blow to property developers who were hoping to cash in on Amsterdam’s tourism boom. But it’s not clear whether it will actually tamp down on the tourism itself.

Amsterdam’s Latest Effort to Fight Excessive Tourism: No New Hotels

The city wants no more than 20 million hotel stays annually. The measure is one of multiple efforts to control the flow of visitors.

By Claire Moses

Amsterdam has been searching for any way to rein in the number of tourists that visit the city every year.

In March of last year, the city launched an ad campaign specifically targeted at British men between 18 and 35, urging them to “stay away.”

In July, the Dutch capital announced it would bar cruise ships from docking in the city center .

The city has also long tried to control the crowds in its red-light district, where rowdy groups of tourists often cause disruptions to local residents. It has added stricter rules about smoking marijuana . It has banned new tourist shops. And still, the people keep coming.

Now, the city — which is as well known for its canals and 17th century art as for its legal sex industry and easy access to marijuana — has taken one more step to further restrict the explosive growth of tourists: It is banning hotels from being built.

“Amsterdam is saying ‘no’ to new hotels,” the City Council said in a statement. “We want to make and keep the city livable for residents and visitors,” it added.

Amsterdam, which added that it was seeking to keep hotel stays by tourists to under 20 million per year, saw its highest number of visitors before the pandemic in 2019, when there were 25.2 million hotel stays, according to the city’s data.

Last year, that number was exceeded by tourists staying over in Amsterdam, not including stays in short-term rentals like Airbnbs and cruise ships. And the measure also does not take into account daily visitors who do not stay the night.

The ban on new hotels, while sending a clear message about the city’s aim to reduce the number of visitors, is also largely symbolic. The city’s policy on hotel construction was already strict, and there had been only three proposals since 2017 that met Amsterdam’s requirements, according to the city. New hotels that had been approved or were in development — 26 in total — would be allowed to proceed for now.

Under the new rules, a new hotel can only open if another one closes. It also isn’t allowed to add more rooms than were available, according to the city.

“The effect won’t be very big,” said Ko Koens, a professor of new urban tourism at Inholland University in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He also said that in the long run, the capping of hotels could make them more expensive to stay at.

While this ban alone would not make a huge dent in the number of visitors to the city, Mr. Koens said, taken together with other initiatives it could make Amsterdam a less appealing place to visit. But, he said, “For now, visitors don’t seem to mind.”

In total, Amsterdam has nearly 42,000 hotel rooms that can accommodate more than 92,000 people, according to Statistics Netherlands, a governmental institution that compiles data about the country. (In total, the Netherlands has more than 150,000 hotel rooms.)

Amsterdam’s initiatives to rein in tourism have been largely focused on its crowded city center. But as long as Amsterdam’s airport, Schiphol, continues to be a major European hub, it won’t be easy to keep visitors away from the city.

“There are no simple solutions,” Mr. Koens said. “It’s super complex.”

Amsterdam also announced this week it would start cutting the number of river cruises allowed to dock in its waters. In 2023, that number was 2,125. In 2028, the city wants it to be halved, with no more than 1,150. The city predicts that effort could reduce the number of visitors that come into town by 271,000. This proposal, the city said, is to improve the quality of life for residents and to reduce emissions and crowds.

“The balance in the city needs to improve,” Hester van Buren, a deputy mayor who focuses on the city’s port, said in a statement.

Amsterdam isn’t the only major European destination that has been struggling to get a grip on the growing number of tourists. Venice announced it would charge day-tripping visitors 5 euros ($5.33) to enter the iconic streets of its city center on weekends and some holidays from April 25 through mid-July, its busiest season.

Amsterdam, currently in a busy touristic time because of its famous blooming tulips, has not announced a similar measure, but it is likely there will be more efforts and experiments designed to limit visitors — like the hotel ban.

“Without such a stop, Amsterdam’s center would become one big hotel,” Mr. Koens said. “You don’t want that either.”

Amsterdam bans new hotels with over 42K rooms already available in fight against mass tourism

A msterdam has banned the construction of new hotels as part of their latest attempt to rein in the number of rowdy tourists visiting the Dutch capital each year.

“We want to make and keep the city livable for residents and visitors,” the City Council said in a statement.

This means no over-tourism, no new hotels, and no more than 20 million hotel overnight stays by tourists per year, the local government added.

Under the new rules, building a new hotel in Amsterdam will only be allowed when another hotel closes, and only if the total number of guestrooms in the city does not increase as a result of the new construction.

The new accommodation will also be required to be more sustainable.

Mayor Femke Halsema said there would be some exceptions to the policy, noting that the rule won’t apply to new hotels — 26 in total — that have already secured a permit.

The new ban is largely symbolic, with only three proposals for new hotels meeting the city’s already strict requirements since 2017, the New York Times reported.

In 2019, there were 25.2 million hotel stays in Amsterdam. That number was far exceeded by visitors last year, not taking into account Airbnbs and daytrippers disembarking from cruise ships, city data revealed.

In total, Amsterdam has nearly 42,000 hotel rooms that can accommodate more than 92,000 guests, according to Statistics Netherlands, representing about 28% of the 150,000 hotel rooms across the country.

But some experts have said the ban won’t have a very big effect.

Ko Koens, a professor of new urban tourism at Inholland University Rotterdam, told the Times it won’t be easy to keep visitors away from the popular tourist hub known for its canals, museums, and decadent nightlife.

“There are no simple solutions. It’s super complex,” Koens said.

In March, the city launched an ad campaign targeting British men aged 18 to 35 urging them to “stay away” from the city. In July Amsterdam announced it would bar cruise ships from docking in the city center.

Stricter rules about smoking marijuana have also been implemented, in addition to a ban on new tourist shops and even a push to discourage sex and drug-related tourism in its world-renowned red light district.

Amsterdam isn’t the only European destination scrambling to reclaim its city from the clutches of mass tourism.

Visitors to the southern Spanish city Seville may soon have to cough up a fee to see the Plaza de España square , which has been falling apart from swarms of tourists and illegal vendors.

Meanwhile, Venice banned large tourist groups in 2024 to “protect” the historic sinking city by curbing congestion in its narrow streets and waterways.

Further south in the Canary Islands, residents have protests and strikes planned this weekend to fight against overtourism.

Closer to home, lawmakers in Hawaii proposed a $25 climate tax on tourists who visit the state to combat what they claim is an assault on the area’s natural resources .

Amsterdam to halt hotel construction in bid to control tourism

Dutch authorities said they want to control a city that is overrun with tourism, in their eyes. The effort would also control annual hotel stays.

People celebrate King's Day in the center of Amsterdam

Dutch authorities say the popular city Amsterdam is overrun with tourism. They want to curb it by halting new hotel construction and reducing annual hotel stay numbers there.

New local council rules in Amsterdam would stop properties from raising the limits on numbers of beds and would only allow new hotels to be built if another property closes,  Euronews reported .

Celebrations in the city like the recent one for King's Day can bring is big tourist numbers, but they can also bring in littering, increased pickpocketing, alcohol consumption in the streets and noise,  Amsterdam's city council said .

Efforts to control tourism numbers are meant to make residents of the city more comfortable.

City authorities have also decided to cut the number of riverboat cruises allowed to enter the capital, from about 2,300 that were docked there in 2023 to about 1,150 by 2028, Euronews reported.

Travel publications like Travel Pulse said certain seasons can bring in an overwhelming influx of visitors to the city, which is known for  liberal drug policies and its Red-Light district .

In 2023 the  World Economic Forum published  a report looking at the problem of over-tourism around the globe. In it, leaders spoke about a spike in excessive tourism after the deep lull brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In cities like Barcelona, an energy of anti-tourism sentiment has permeated among residents. The WEF described the surge of tourism as "rapid" and "unyielding."

Governments have been encouraged to be decisive and firm about how they develop policies to response to issues of high tourist demand, the WEF said in the report.
