I believe travel is a doorway to extraordinary, life-changing experiences. It offers the chance to see other cultures and connects people, creating memories, which is why clients hire me as a trusted travel advisor to manage, design and create their holidays.

Travel is in my blood… my parents met on one of the very first Contiki Tours around Europe. Later we went as a family to live in the UK for three years, toured around Europe in school holidays and finished with three months in a campervan throughout the USA. At 18 I went on a student exchange to Argentina, attended school, travelled and learnt Spanish. On my return to NZ, I started my travel industry career in a corporate travel agency before moving on to airline work with Ansett New Zealand. Travel Broking was the next step in 2009—returning to the industry I love and building a business, initially working around my young children.

Fast forward 16 years, the kids have grown, as has my business. I love travel and I love to travel. I’ve been lucky to have had the opportunity to visit many countries and bring back all those experiences ready to share with my clients.

With the online booking revolution in full swing, travel consultants may appear as antiquated as the printed map. This, however, can’t be further from the truth. You think that by doing it yourself, you’re cutting out the middleman and must be getting the best value but beware of the ‘cut commission/maximise profit’ promise. Time and time again we’ve seen booking sites suddenly close down, leaving the holidaymaker out of pocket.

I’m here for the long haul! While this recent pandemic threw a huge curveball for the travel industry I continued to work where I could; bringing people home from overseas with Repatriation Travel; pivoted to domestic travel, helped Kiwis see their own country; booked business trips for those who still needed to travel overseas for work, negotiated the MIQ process for returnees and most recently made numerous bookings for travel to the Cook Islands.

Travel has bounced back since NZ ‘opened up’ again and people have been chomping at the bit to get back out and see the world. Airlines are returning to NZ on a regular basis and hopefully will be back to full capacity soon.

With fewer travel agents and agencies in New Zealand now, you can be assured that I’ll remain and am here to help you navigate the new version of overseas travel. I offer great customer service, effectively ‘hand-holding’ through the booking process so you can be assured new country entry requirements are met, and providing support and backup while you’re away. About Steve Lawson

Being part of as large an organisation as Travel Managers Group enables me to service my clients with wide knowledge and experience of flights, packages, accommodation, tours, cruises, insurance and all other facets of travel with all the advantages of a large travel agency.

However, as a self employed broker within Travel Managers Group I also offer a personal and objective view which has been developed over 30 years travel industry experience. I offer to my existing and prospective clientele a 24 hour, 7 day a week professional service. My clients can either visit me at my home office in Lower Hutt, or I will visit them at their own home or work, free of charge, to discuss their travel needs. This provides a relaxed, informal environment in which to explore and evaluate those hard travel decisions, reducing stress and increasing enjoyment of the whole travel experience.

My clients are so happy with my services that they happily refer their friends, colleagues and family to me. As I have no allegiance to any one supplier or airline I have an unbiased view of the industry and can therefore offer my clients anything that is available in the market place, I am able to source and book on my client’s behalf. Browsing and booking the internet for travel has its pitfalls, and having a guiding hand through this minefield, is a major advantage and safeguard.

Over my many years in the travel industry I have travelled extensively, and so am able to bring a wealth of firsthand knowledge about many destinations. Over the last three years I have visited more of the diverse destinations that New Zealanders are now travelling to. These include South America, where I realised a dream to visit Macchu Picchu, Lake Titicaca, Cuzco and the Amazon Basin. Last year I travelled to Cambodia (up to Siem Reap to see Angkor Wat); into Laos (and a cruise up the Mekong River), then to Vietnam (to visit Hanoi, Hoi An and Siagon/Ho Chi Minh).

Two arrested after children sustain 'horrific' injuries in Lower Hutt

Two people have been charged after two Lower Hutt children, four and five-year-old siblings, suffered "horrific" injuries.

A man and woman, both 25, were charged on Wednesday and will face court on Thursday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Rebecca Cotton said the man has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, wilful ill treatment of a dog, attempting to pervert the course of justice, and selling and cultivating cannabis.

The woman is also facing two charges of failing to protect a child, two charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice and failure to carry out obligations in relation to computer search.

The charges follow two search warrants at different addresses in the Hutt Valley.

Police are not ruling out further charges.

The pair were held in custody overnight and will appear in Hutt Valley District Court on Thursday.

"We are elated to be able to share this news and recognise the genuine concern and outrage from the community that has gotten us here," Det Snr Sgt Cotton said.

"This result cannot be attributed to any one thing – a number of enquiries have taken place over the past week culminating in interviews with the two people that have been charged yesterday afternoon.

"Our priorities have been twofold - ensuring those responsible for the harm these two children have suffered are put before the court, and the ongoing welfare of these two siblings."

The siblings, who were hospitalised, are still recovering well. They remain in a safe place and are being cared for.

Police have previously said they believe the children were deliberately hurt "likely over a period of time".

Police ask anyone with information about the crime to contact 105, quoting file number 240308/4647. Information can be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
