Enjoy your favorite drink while gazing Chicago’s magnificent architecture and finish your cruise with a fabulous light show, at Navy Pier!

Fireworks, one of the Four Great Inventions of ancient China were invented in the 12th century.

Chicago approved City-Wide Use of Fireworks on the 4th of July 1893. Mayor of Chicago Patrick Eugene Prendergast issued a proclamation approving the use of fireworks to celebrate the World’s Colombian Exposition and to celebrate the nation’s 117th Independence Day.

This fascination with fireworks, noise, and color continues today. The City of Chicago offers a fireworks show at Navy Pier on Wednesdays at 9:30pm and Saturday nights at 10:15pm.

Drinks may be purchased individually with a credit card on the boat. Complimentary Coca-Cola soft drinks, lemonade, and cookies are included. Depending on lock traffic, our fireworks cruise will sail along one of two routes, river only or river and lake.

Join us at 8pm on Wednesday nights and 8:30pm on Saturdays for our narrated Architectural Fireworks 2-hour Cruise. There’s something for everyone on this one of a kind cruise!

* Subject to change, depends on lock traffic and weather conditions

  • Due to heavy Lake traffic, cruises may return to dock 30 minutes later than scheduled.

The best guide on our whole USA trip. We took the Architecture tour where the boat meandered in between all of the incredible buildings of the city with the guide knowing EVERYTHING about each building; its style, age, height, architect, cost, purpose, owner ….. Quite brilliant! DrCumbrian / TripAdvisor

If you only have time for one sight-seeing event while in Chicago, do this. We really have no great interest in architecture, but this tour came highly recommended and we did not regret it. Allice I / Oklahoma
My wife and I very much enjoyed the Chicago Line Cruise jazz cruise... My spouse said this was one of the favorite things she has done in Chicago since moving here in the past year, and I agree. I am a jazz snob, and ... I was very pleased with the music offered by the Geordie Kelly group. He's a fine jazz guitarist, and his band was great. Augie R / Yelp

Where to Watch the Chicago Fourth of July Fireworks 2023

By Nicole Schnitzler

Skyline of Chicago with fireworks.

There’s much to celebrate about summer in Chicago , with its vibrant festival rotation, lively rooftop scene, lakefront gatherings, and of course the Navy Pier’s bi-weekly fireworks show. The pyrotechnics on Saturday, July 1 will ring in the holiday weekend with a brilliant spectacle of color and music you won’t want to miss. Arrive to the shoreline early for a spot, or explore a number of other options across the city—from skyscrapers to cycleboats (and plenty in between). Here are some of the best places to catch the 4th of July fireworks in Chicago.

The skyline of Chicago

Navy Pier's fireworks are a can't-miss summer tradition.

You can enjoy fireworks at Navy Pier every Wednesday at 9 p.m. and Saturday at 10 p.m. throughout the summer. Note that their special Independence Day display on July 1 will begin at 9 p.m., an hour earlier than their typical Saturday showtime.

The pier juts into Lake Michigan for the length of six city blocks and it offers amazing views over the water, but the nearby lakeshore is also a perfect place to catch the action. Arrive early for musical performances happening from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Navy Pier Beer Garden . For an extra special evening, try to time a ride on the pier’s 200-foot Centennial Ferris Wheel to the start of the fireworks show.

If you want some drinks with your pyrotechnics, visit the 52,000-square-foot Offshore Rooftop and look into booking one of their special showtime reservations for some of the best seats in the house. Or consider a stay at Sable at Navy Pier , where a Saturday fireworks package includes Champagne and chocolate upon arrival, a late checkout, and upgrades to a higher floor, pending availability.

River cruises

A summertime cruise on the Chicago River or Lake Michigan is always a good idea, but particularly so beneath a dazzling lights display. No friend with a boat? No problem, thanks to Boatsetter , a boat rental community featuring hundreds of makes and models, from pontoons and wake boats to motor yachts and power cruisers. Book one for July 1 or July 5—the days of the Navy Pier fireworks—and bring your squad: most charters can accommodate up to 12 people.

You’ll feel extra patriotic when booking with Chicago Fireboat Tours , a veteran-owned and -operated business featuring cruises on the Fred A. Busse, a retired fireboat that served the Chicago Fire Department for more than 40 years. They offer a fireworks cruise every Saturday, including on July 1 at 8:15 p.m. (ensuring ample time before the 9 p.m. show).

Chicago Electric Boat Company has self-guided Duffy, retro, donut, and pontoon boats for rent, with the option to hire a captain. Reserve one of their party barges, cycleboats, or yachts—they come with a professional captain and deck hand—if you’re looking to kick back (and look up). And just in time for summer, they launched a lakefront location at Monroe Harbor, offering private cruises with perfect fireworks views.

For a memorable stay, book a weekend at the Four Seasons and some time aboard their 52-foot yacht , where you can enjoy a curated fireworks experience, including a bespoke menu from chef Richie Farina.

NASCAR Chicago Street Race

For NASCAR’s 75th anniversary season, Chicago is hosting the inaugural Chicago Street Race Weekend on July 1 and 2, featuring a 12-turn, 2.2-mile street course that will take drivers by some of the city’s most iconic sites and landmarks. Stick around post-race on July 1, when The Chainsmokers perform at Grant Park—the ultimate accompaniment to that night’s fireworks, accessible exclusively through NASCAR Chicago Experiences by QuintEvents (packages ranging to include prime seating and hotel stays).

Museum Campus

Promontory Point offers all-encompassing views over the distant, illuminated skyline—but for slightly closer views, settle in somewhere on Museum Campus (namely, the coveted stretch between the Adler Planetarium and the Shedd Aquarium ). Keep the celebrations going on July 5, when the Shedd Aquarium hosts “ Jazzin’ at the Shedd ,” a weekly chance to enjoy drinks and music from one of Chicago’s top jazz ensembles, plus excellent lakefront and skyline views. Navy Pier’s regularly programmed Wednesday fireworks kick off at 9 p.m., ensuring a special way to wind down the evening.

Cindy’s and the Chicago Athletic Association

For an exciting viewing experience, gather with friends at any number of hotels with balconies, rooftops, or lake views—and if you’re near Millennium Park, make it the Chicago Athletic Association and its rooftop restaurant Cindy’s , where guests can enjoy bites by chef Kaleena Bliss while taking in exceptional city views. While there, try the Tierra Roja, a newly debuted cocktail featuring mezcal, passionfruit, and green tea-infused rum.

360 CHICAGO and The Signature Room

For some of the best vantage points in the city, get advance tickets to the 360 CHICAGO observation deck at 875 N Chicago (formerly the John Hancock Center). All admission passes include access from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., and you can spring for an all-access ticket to experience TILT, a thrill ride that leans you forward for a staggering 1000-foot-view of the Mag Mile.

Afterwards, check out the recently opened CloudBar, a cocktail space featuring local breweries, Chicago-inspired cocktails, and stunning views for the fireworks. For a full dinner, book a table at The Signature Room one floor up, where you can catch the show with a glass of Champagne in hand.

The Up Room has sweeping views of the city skyline—and any 4th of July fireworks Chicago has to offer.

If you don’t do crowds and are content with neighborhood fireworks, opt for The Robey hotel in Wicker Park. You’ll be far from the lake, but you’ll be able to spot fireworks in every direction, especially from the hotel’s 13th-floor lounge, The Up Room . Afterwards, head to the 6th-floor Cabana Club , where you can dip your toes in the outdoor pool and order frozen drinks and bar bites by chef Michael Elliott. Try the frozen take on their signature drink, the Oaxacan on Broken Glass, with mezcal, chile liqueur, lime juice, and habanero bitters; or their Independence Day special: a boozy lemonade with a red, white, and blue Bomb Pop that ushers in plenty of summer nostalgia.

Most anything hugging the lakeshore to the north and south of Navy Pier will afford prime fireworks views—and fewer crowds. For a lively option, try Shore Club , a summertime-only hotspot at North Avenue Beach , where the red-white-and-blue frozen cocktail is a holiday must-order. The venue hosts its epic Fourth of July beachside brunch all weekend long. Upgrade that experience with a sun bed, daybed, or cabana at the Oasis at Shore Club —complete with bottle service.

Guide to Celebrate Fourth of July 2024 in Chicago | Fireworks, Events & More

Fourth of July – is one of the biggest holidays in Chicago and the best time to experience the summer. Many people are given a three-day holiday weekend. The whole celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm and excitement. And this year the holiday is on Monday which means you have a long weekend to celebrate. Now that the city has been in its full opening with no more covid restrictions, you can make way for a holiday weekend that is more like the ones you remember from the Coronavirus pandemic.

The city is filled with crowded beaches, backyard food, and fireworks . Meet with your family and friends, spend time outdoors, and celebrate American  Independence Day in Chicago  before the Chicago Summer Festival season officially begins. Explore activities such as river and lake cruises, kayaking and boat rentals, and outdoor dining in Chicago on July 4th.

July 4th is filled with the smell of freshly baked hot dogs, sunscreen, and fireworks. The way this holiday is celebrated varies from person to person, but there are some traditions that cannot be changed. July 4th will never change and will respect the old tradition of staying true to the memories of July 4th.

Here is the complete guide on how to celebrate the Fourth of July this year in Chicago-

Fourth of July is incomplete without watching the  epic fireworks . No matter what you do for the rest of day never miss the firework. Many of Chicagoland’s long-running fireworks shows are returning to the skies for the holiday weekend which was restricted because of the pandemic. Many of the neighboring suburbs of Chicago have announced plans to go ahead with their fireworks.

You can go to the lakefront to witness not one but two spectacular fireworks displays. Also, you can head to Navy Pier, an iconic Chicago destination that will host its free annual waterfront fireworks show on both Saturday, July 2, and Monday, July 4. You can watch the 15-minute show from anywhere north or south of Navy Pier along the waterfront, including beaches, rooftop bars, and parks. You can also secure a spot on the pier or take part in one of the many boat trips that offer front-row seats for action. You can also go to Soldier Field and watch Chicago Fireplay Atlanta United in the evening, where you can enjoy both football and fireworks.

Highland Park's July 4th parade will return this year along a new route

By Elyssa Kaufman

April 18, 2024 / 10:18 AM CDT / CBS Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS)--  Highland Park's July 4th parade will return along a new route this year.

Mayor Nancy Rotering said the events will go forward with "respect, compassion and support for everyone whose lives were changed on July 4th, 2022." The city confirmed a "trauma-informed approach" went into the planning of events.

The parade will mark two years since the mass shooting at the July 4th parade.  A mass shooter opened fire, killing seven people and leaving dozens hurt.

The mayor said resuming the parade will start a new chapter for the Highland Park community.

The day's activities will begin with a remembrance ceremony at 10 a.m., followed by the parade at 1 p.m. and "4th Fest" at Sunset Woods Park.

The theme will be "Sweet Home Highland Park."

Highland Park reveals 2024 July 4th plans two years after parade shooting

With summer fast-approaching, the city of Highland Park is unveiling its plans for Independence Day, nearly two years after a gunman opened fire on a crowd of unsuspecting parade-goers.

HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. - With summer fast approaching, the City of Highland Park is unveiling its plans for Independence Day, nearly two years after a gunman opened fire on a crowd of unsuspecting parade-goers.

Like last summer, there will be no fireworks display to commemorate the holiday, and it will once again begin with a remembrance ceremony.

This year, however, a Fourth of July parade is set to return with a new route and a community-focused theme: "Sweet Home Highland Park."

"We're a resilient community, we are here for one another, we are working towards moving forward," Mayor Nancy Rotering told FOX 32 Chicago on Wednesday.

In Highland Park, the Fourth of July will forever mark a difficult milestone.

"We’re still feeling the heartbreak of the loss of seven precious lives," said Rotering.

On July 4, 2022, seven community members were killed and dozens more were injured when a gunman fired upon a busy parade route.

While the community continues to heal, Rotering also hopes to provide a place for new traditions and memories to form this year.

"All of our planning to date has been through trauma-informed deliberation, frankly. It’s a delicate balance that we’re trying to meet," said Rotering.

This year, the Fourth of July will commence with a remembrance ceremony at 10 a.m. to honor the victims. The event will be open to the public, but pre-registration is required. The ceremony will be held indoors, with additional details to be provided here at a later date.

The city is also moving forward with hosting an Independence Day parade, following a community walk in lieu of a parade last year. The parade will kick off at 1 p.m. on an adjusted route.

"We will be moving down to Laurel Avenue, and we will pick up Central Avenue at Green Bay Road," said Rotering.

The day will end with 4th Fest at Sunset Woods Park from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., where carnival games, a petting zoo and food trucks will be part of an array of family-friendly activities.

"We recognize in talking to people, particularly parents of young children, people who grew up here, so many great memories have been made in the decades past around the Fourth of July celebrations," said Rotering. "We wanted to try to recapture that special time, that community magic."

There will be no city-sponsored evening events this Fourth of July.

Last year, the City of Highland Park hosted a drone light show instead of a fireworks display.

Officials are still planning to hold a similar drone show, but it will not be held on Independence Day. Rather, Rotering says a drone show will be centered around another celebration later in the summer, with additional details to be announced at a future date.

Officials say they recognize that community members may benefit from professional support when considering participation in Independence Day activities.

Highland Park’s Resiliency Division provides assistance, including short-term counseling, resources and referrals, case management and needs assessments, and more.

Highland Park to resume Independence Day parade 2 years after mass shooting

Mayor nancy rotering says the ‘sweet home highland park’ parade and a celebration after will restore the community’s spirit and help the city move forward from the 2022 attack that left 7 dead and dozens wounded..

Highland Park denizens wear blue shirts and hold a banner as they take part in a community walk on the one-year anniversary of the Fourth of July parade mass shooting.

Thousands participate in a community walk on July 4, 2023, the one-year anniversary of the Highland Park mass shooting. The year before, authorities say Robert Crimo fired a high-powered rifle from a rooftop onto the crowd attending the Independence Day parade.

Highland Park plans to bring back its Independence Day celebrations two years after a gunman opened fire during the northern suburb’s annual parade, killing seven people and wounding dozens of others.

This year’s parade, themed “Sweet Home Highland Park,” is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. on July 4 along a new route through downtown, said the city and Park District of Highland Park in a news release Wednesday.

“Independence Day has traditionally been a special opportunity for our community to come together with beloved traditions,” Mayor Nancy Rotering said in a statement.

“As we continue our journey as one Highland Park, we do so with respect, compassion and support for all whose lives were forever changed on July 4, 2022, while maintaining the community spirit that has always been a hallmark of Highland Park’s Independence Day events.”

On the one-year anniversary of the attack last year, the Highland Park community came together for a ceremony to honor the victims. Instead of a traditional parade, thousands marched through downtown together to reclaim the route from the tragic memory.

Roberta Dietzen, whose husband was wounded in the attack, thinks it’s a good thing the parade is being held again after the city took a year of reflection in 2023.

“You can’t stop all these wonderful things from happening because of this incident,” she said. “I’m all for it.”

Susan Vanderhorst, who was at the parade two years ago, said the reintroduction of the traditional parade is a step toward the community getting back some sense of normalcy.

“I know there are people that are never going to recover because of their physical injuries, but I think mentally it helps us all to move on,” Vanderhorst said. “Of course no one is going to forget it.”

Just before the parade, a remembrance ceremony will be held indoors at 10 a.m., officials said.

The city and park district are also again holding a Fourth Fest family event after the parade. The festival will feature rides, carnival games, a petting zoo and other family-themed activities at Sunset Woods Park. Fireworks aren’t scheduled.

Family members of Nicolas Toledo, mostly wearing blue T-shirts, take part in the community walk on the one-year anniversary of Highland Park's mass shooting at its Fourth of July parade.

City officials said those who plan to participate in the parade must register in advance. More details can be found on the city’s website.

Organizers took a trauma-informed approach to planning the events with guidance from the Justice Department’s Office of Victims of Crime and community-based mental health clinicians, according to city officials.

Vanderhorst says she still struggles with anxiety around crowds, and wasn’t planning on attending this year’s celebrations in Highland Park. News about mass shootings and fireworks trigger her memories of the massacre.

Though she’s glad the parade is happening again, the heavy police presence will make it hard to not relive the attack, Vanderhorst said. “I know they are going to have to do that, but it’s kind of hard, because the kids are going to have that in their mind seeing that, too.”

Trial delayed

The trial date for Robert Crimo III, the alleged gunman, has been postponed until Feb. 24, 2025. In January, Crimo reappointed his lawyers, who asked to delay the trial.

Crimo has been held at Lake County Jail since he was charged days after the attack. Crimo allegedly opened fire from a rooftop overlooking the parade.

He faces 117 felony counts, including three counts of murder for each person killed. If convicted on two or more of the charges, Crimo faces life in prison.

Ashbey Beasley, who was at the parade with her son during the shooting and has since become a vocal gun violence prevention activist, says the community has worked hard to move forward, and holding the parade again is a step in the healing process.

She said the plan for a new route was a good compromise for those who wanted to take back the holiday and those who weren’t ready to return to the original route. She hopes one day the community can go back to celebrating its Fourth of July traditions like generations before.

“I think it’s time for us to take this day back. I think it’s time to take this holiday back, and to come together and find a new way to celebrate it,” Beasley told the Sun-Times. “It’s a difficult thing when something like this happens, you want to make sure that they don’t get the best of you, that evil does not win.”
