Quick Links

Keeping safari updated, how to update safari in system preferences.

It's a good practice to keep your web browser constantly updated for security reasons , but Apple Safari on Mac doesn't have an update button. Here's how to keep Safari updated.

Every year, Apple releases new features for Safari, and you usually install them without realizing it because they're linked to macOS updates that you get in System Preferences.

But because Safari is a browser, Apple often lets you update to the latest version of Safari without installing the next big OS release. For example, while Safari 14.0 came bundled in macOS Big Sur , macOS Catalina users can still update to it. Apple also provides regular security updates to older versions of Safari, which is the main reason why  we recommend that you keep it updated .

Related: Why You Should Update All Your Software

To update Safari, you'll have to use the Software Update feature in System Preferences. To get there, click the Apple icon in the top-left corner of the screen.

In the menu that appears, choose the "System Preferences" option.

In System Preferences, click "Software Update."

The Software Update panel will show you whether there are any software updates available for your Mac. If there are, you have two choices.

If you want to install the latest operating system along with the latest version of Safari, just click the "Update Now" button and follow the process.

Related: Why You Should Update Your Web Browser

If you only want to install an update to Safari, click "More Info" under the list of available updates to see a detailed list of all updates.

After clicking "More info," a panel will appear listing the updates available for your Mac. Make sure that the "Safari" update is selected, and uncheck "macOS" if you don't want to install a system update along with it. When you're ready, click "Install Now."

After a while, the Safari update will be installed on your Mac.

Once the update process is finished, you can safely quit the System Preferences app using the red Close button in the corner of the window.

Since this process is somewhat confusing and non-obvious, we recommend enabling the auto-update feature to keep Safari and your Mac updated. Good luck!

Make older Macs feel new again by switching web browsers [Pro tip]

Switch browsers to speed up an old Mac

When you have an older computer that’s starting to feel a little sluggish, you might typically consider adding more RAM or swapping its hard disk for a solid-state drive to give it a speed boost.

That’s not so easy with many Macs, which aren’t easily upgradeable — and it might not be necessary, either. In some cases, speeding up your machine is as simple as switching to a different web browser.

Especially if you usually use Google Chrome.

Ditch Google Chrome to speed up your Mac

Chrome is by far the most popular web browser on the planet. It didn’t get that far by being an awful browser. But Chrome is notorious for being a massive resource hog that can slow down your machine.

Chrome eats up a lot of RAM — especially if you regularly have more than one browser tab open — and can send CPU usage through the roof. It will also drain your battery if you’re running it on a MacBook.

This doesn’t just result in slower web browsing and more frequent charges. If you have Chrome running in the background, you’ll notice other Mac apps run slower, too, as Chrome steals precious power.

Google has finally acknowledged all this, and recently began testing changes that hope to improve Chrome’s efficiency. Until those tweaks arrive, you should consider using another browser instead.

Which browser is best?

So, which browser should you switch to? Safari is the obvious choice. It comes installed on your Mac, and it’s optimized specifically for Apple computers, so it tends to be faster and more efficient than others.

Safari makes switching simple, too. You can import all your bookmarks, passwords, and more from Chrome into Safari so that you don’t have to set everything up from scratch. Just follow these steps:

  • Open Safari on your Mac.
  • Click File , then Import From .
  • Select Google Chrome…
  • Select the items you want to import. You can choose bookmarks, history, and passwords.
  • Click Import .

You will be prompted to enter your Mac’s password for authorization. We recommend clicking the Always Allow button, rather than just Allow, so that you don’t have to enter your password several times.

For even easier switching and a more Chrome-like experience, you might want to consider the Microsoft Edge browser for Mac .

Why Edge is an excellent option

Edge is built using the same Chromium foundations as Chrome itself, but with a greater focus on speed, efficiency, and privacy. It looks and feels similar, but it runs a lot faster and has some unique features.

Edge ships with built-in anti-tracking tools, supports 4K streaming in Netflix, and offers support for Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision. It’s also just as easy to import all your Chrome data:

  • Open Edge on your Mac.
  • Click the Settings button.
  • Click Favorites , then Import .
  • Choose Google Chrome .
  • Select the data you want to import, then click Import .

Most importantly, because Edge is built on Chromium, it supports all the Chrome extensions you’re already used to — unlike Safari. You can even download them from the same Chrome Web Store.

By default, Edge will allow only Microsoft-approved extensions. To install from the Chrome Web Store as well, follow these steps:

  • In Edge, click the Settings button.
  • Click Extensions .
  • In the bottom-left corner of the window, click the toggle to Allow extensions from other stores .
  • Click Allow to confirm.
  • Now visit the Chrome Web Store and download what you need.

Ditch Chrome after switching

There are other browsers options, of course. You might also want to consider Firefox , Opera , Brave , or Vivaldi — all of which will allow you to import your data from Chrome, and should run a little better.

Opera, in particular, is another solid choice. It has built-in malware protection and a great feature that compresses web pages for faster loading times. It’s worth a try, especially on older machines.

No matter which one you choose, don’t forget to remove Google Chrome from your Mac after switching. Even when you’re not using it, it has processes that run in the background, slowing down your Mac.

How to switch between the new and old Safari design on iPhone and iPad

In rethinking some of the fundamentals in Safari on iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, Apple has managed to ruffle the feathers of its customers. The same redesign has continued in iOS 16 and iPadOS 16. The good news is you can decide between adopting the redesign complete with the new consolidated tab bar, or stick with Safari’s old version with the familiar tab interface.

In this post, we’ll show you how to reverse the new Safari design back to how things used to be before iOS 15 came along.

Apple’s controversial changes in Safari

After you update the operating system software on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad to iOS 15/iPadOS 15 or newer, you’ll immediately notice the visual changes in Safari. By default, Safari for iPhone will show the URL at the bottom instead of the top. And on iPad, Safari will merge the URL bar and tabs into one consolidated area where each tab doubles as the URL bar.

iPhone screenshot showing bottom address bar in Safari on iOS 15

Another default that some people may dislike causes Safari to color-match browser chrome to the website’s header color, which is called website tinting. But it’s easy to disable those features at will and bring back the old design.

Apple provides specific controls to turn on or off the website tinting feature and move the URL bar from top to bottom and vice versa. Let’s show you the steps for all that.

How to switch between the old and new Safari design on iPhone

To bring back the old Safari interface on iPhone, you must change two new settings.

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone
  • Choose Safari from the root list
  • Choose between tabs on top or bottom underneath the Tabs heading:
  • Tab Bar: The new default, which repositions the address bar to the bottom.
  • Single Tab: Choose this to get the old Safari interface back.

Choose the Single Tab option if you’ve become accustomed to the previous Safari design. And boom, just like that, you have your old Safari interface back!

iPhone screenshot showing Safari options for tabs with top and bottom address bar placement on iOS 15

You can switch between the top and bottom address bars without leaving Safari: Hit Safari’s A A menu and select Show Top Address Bar or Show Bottom Tab Bar  from there.

iPhone screenshot illustrating the bottom address bar with the “aA” menu options in Safari on iOS 15

These menu shortcuts are great time-savers for those times when you’d like to change your preferred URL bar on the fly but don’t necessarily want to switch to the Settings app.

Managing website tinting on iPhone

Another setting worth adjusting is Safari’s new feature that color-matches the toolbar area to the website’s header color. Here’s how to change that:

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone and choose Safari .
  • Slide the switch next to Allow Website Tinting to the OFF position to disable the feature

With it turned off, the Safari toolbars will no longer change their color when switching tabs.

How to switch between the old and new Safari design on iPad

On iPad, the tab bar and the URL area have remained stuck to the top. What’s changed is the new design that consolidates the tabs and the URL bar into a single area. Changing this design, as well as toggling the website tinting option, can be done in the Safari preferences within the Settings app on iPadOS 15 or later.

  • Open the Settings app on your iPad
  • Choose between tabs on top or bottom underneath the Tabs heading

This is what the interface around these preferences looks like.

iPad screenshot illustrating the Safari settings in iPadOS 15 for choosing between separate tab bar and compact tab bar

And here’s a brief description of the two tab layout options available:

  • Separate Tab Bar: This is how Safari on iPad used to be. You get separate URL and tab sections at the top. Select this setting to bring back the old Safari experience.
  • Compact Tab Bar:  The new, optional Safari design that integrates the URL bar and the tab section into one consolidated area. When you click a tab, it expands automatically to make room for the URL field within. Tabs that grow in width as you touch them can be quite confusing, so disable this feature if you find that it doesn’t work for you.

Like with iPhone, you can switch between the top/bottom address bar in Safari’s A A menu.

Managing website tinting on iPad

iPadOS 15 and later has the setting for folks who might prefer to stop the color-matching between the iOS status bar and the website’s accent color, but it’s named differently from the Website Tinting switch on iPhone.

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad
  • Slide the switch next to Show Color in Tab Bar  to the OFF position to disable the feature

And just like that, Safari’s tab bar will switch back to a dull gray design, but at least it won’t adjust itself dynamically to match the accent color of the website you are in.

Is Your Mac Too Old to Update in 2024: Ultimate Guide

Ujjwal Image

If you buy through affiliate links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Full Disclosure Here…

In this article, we will determine if your old Mac can still be updated to newer versions of macOS.

Most Apple devices have an average 5-year support lifespan, which means that they will receive software updates, including bug fixes, patches, and security updates over those years.

Until then, macOS and iOS devices are considered “unsupported” by Apple due to forced obsolescence of hardware.

In other words, Apple stopped supporting all its macOS and iOS devices with continuous software and operating system updates due to hardware limitations.

This is because as hardware ages, it cannot dully support newer programs that might be too advanced for its capability.

Starting with Mojave Apple did not allow older Macs to upgrade to newer macOS versions. With every new macOS release the minimum year of Mac hardware increases. While most pre-2012 officially cannot be upgraded, there are unofficial workarounds for older Macs.

According to Apple, macOS Mojave supports:

  • MacBook (Early 2015 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (Mid 2012 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid 2012 or newer)
  • Mac mini (Late 2012 or newer)
  • iMac (Late 2012 or newer)
  • iMac Pro (2017)
  • Mac Pro (Late 2013; Mid 2010 and Mid 2012 models)

According to Apple, macOS Catalina supports:

  • Mac Pro (Late 2013 or newer)

Lastly, macOS Big Sur supports these devices:

  • MacBook introduced in 2015 or later
  • MacBook Air introduced in 2013 or later
  • MacBook Pro introduced in late 2013 or later
  • Mac mini introduced in 2014 or later
  • iMac introduced in 2014 or later
  • Mac Pro introduced in 2013 or later

If you see that your Mac is older than mentioned above, you definitely can’t expect to update your device to newer macOS versions.

Is my mac too old to update?

It is possible that your Mac is too old to update to the latest version of macOS. To check if your Mac is compatible with the latest version, check the Apple website or go to the App Store and select “Updates.” If there are no updates available, it may mean that your Mac is no longer supported.

Does Apple still support your version of macOS?

old computer

Usually, macOS automatically updates itself once the software is rolled out to its users. But first, know which version of macOS your device is running.

To know which version of macOS you are using, click the Apple icon at the top left corner of your screen and select  About This Mac.

A Window will appear showing the version of macOS running on your device.

Note: If you are using an older device, it will show that your system is called “OS X” (OS X 10.11 El Capitan is the latest) instead of “macOS” (starting from macOS 10.12 Sierra onwards).

Updating your Mac to the newest macOS versions

macos update

If Apple still supports your device, you can directly update your device from the  About This Mac  window by clicking “Software Update.”

This will download the latest version of macOS to your device. Alternatively, you can type “macOS <version>” on the App Store if you wish to install a specific macOS version on your device.

After the download completes, the installer will open automatically. Click Continue and follow the instructions and let it complete the process.

How Long Do MacBooks Last?

Make sure not to use your computer, put it to sleep, or close it slid during the installation process. Doing so may corrupt the installation files and your current system files.

Why Mac Won’t Update to Newer Versions of macOS

Usual installation problems across different versions of macOS could be:

  • Incompatible Mac
  • The update couldn’t be downloaded
  • Insufficient storage space

Problem 1: Incompatible Mac

As stated before, newer versions of macOS do not support really old Mac devices. Always check if your device is supported by Mojave, Catalina, Big Sur, or other macOS versions before updating.

Problem 2: The update couldn’t be downloaded

In downloading the macOS update, you might receive an error message that says, “Installation of macOS could not continue. Installation requires downloading important content. That content can’t be downloaded at this time. Try again later.”

Other users might find that the download progress bar might be stuck.

If you encounter these problems, the culprit might be a network error. Try these fixes:

  • Check your router if you have a stable internet connection and not experiencing a network hiccup.
  • If you are using a wireless internet connection, try switching to an Ethernet cable connection to ensure that the download speed is consistent.
  • Lastly, check Apple’s System Status  and see if The Apple Serve is live.

If the problem persists, there may be several people downloading the update at the same time. This most likely happens at the early release of the update so try downloading the update at non-peak times.

Problem 3: Insufficient storage space

In most cases, download files abruptly stop downloading if there is not enough space left in the computer, causing partial installation files to be stored in your system.

To fix this problem:

  • Look for a file name called “Install macOS <version number of what you are trying to install> “. For example, “Install macOS 10.14” for Mojave, “Install macOS 10.15” for Catalina, and “macOS 11.2” for Big Sur.
  • Delete the file.
  • Reboot and make sure to free up more than the necessary space required for the download file.
  • Download the file again.

Your device should automatically start the installation once it’s done. Otherwise, open the folder where you saved the update file and double-click it to prompt the installation.

Installing Newer Versions of macOS in Safe Mode

safe mode screen

Some applications, startup items, or extensions might interfere with the installation process, causing it to terminate or not run the update at all.

To ensure that no other programs are causing this problem, you can install Mojave, Catalina, or Big Sur in Safe Mode.

To restart your device in Safe Mode:

  • Shut down your Mac.
  • Wait for 15 seconds until the device fully shuts down.
  • Press the power button and press  Shift  as soon as your Mac starts up.
  • Release the  Shift  key when the Apple logo appears.

From there, proceed to install the new version of the macOS you wish to upgrade to.

Do You Need to Update/Upgrade Your Mac?

Short answer: yes.

You need to update your macOS to the newest version mainly because of the security updates and performance fixes that come along with it. This ensures that your device is less vulnerable to hacks and more stable as new features are being released by Apple.

However, if you’re using a Mac that’s older than the Mac devices listed above, you might want to consider not upgrading to newer macOS versions like Mojave or Catalina.

Older devices might suffer compatibility issues with older applications once you decide to upgrade your Mac to newer macOS versions .

Especially in macOS Catalina, where Apple fully transitioned to 64-bit Mac applications , dropping full support for older 32-bit applications.

On the other hand, macOS Mojave (10.14) is the last macOS version that supports 32-bit applications.

For old Mac owners, this could be the closest to the newest macOS version that they can upgrade to while keeping most of their programs working on their device.

Installing New macOS Versions on Unsupported Macs

Even if your Mac is too old to update, it does not mean that it is impossible to install newer macOS versions to your old Mac.

You can actually install Mojave, Catalina, or even Big Sur to older unsupported Mac devices through a workaround patch.

However, keep in mind that you will experience performance issues in doing so. In most cases, you might lose data, so it is strongly recommended to create a full backup before you try these methods.

Once your Mac has crossed the 7-year mark, it is considered “obsolete” by Apple. This means that you will no longer receive security updates and will no longer qualify for support and service.

The oldest Mac that can still receive updates and is still supported are the models from early 2015. The same can be said for MacBook Air models 2012 or later. However, as Apple rolls out newer macOS versions, these devices will soon become obsolete.

MacBooks launched before 2015 can no longer be updated for macOS Monterey. Similarly, MacBook Air models launched before 2018 cannot be updated for macOS Ventura.

Even if you own an old MacBook, you may not need to buy a new one just yet. There are several alternative ways to download the latest version of macOS on your device. Even if you are unable to get macOS Ventura on your Mac system, Monterey is equally good to work with.

Apple tends to stop providing support for their older Macs as they come with the latest macOS versions. Hence, if you are looking to keep yourself updated with the latest apps, settings, etc., you might need to get a new Mac or update using the methods we’ve mentioned in this guide.

I'm always curious about these Safari Tech Preview posts. Are they just a quick way to add another headline? I suspect so, as I don't see many people trusting these builds as their daily driver. I've tried that in the past, but it never stuck.

If you forgot your iPad passcode, use your Mac or PC to reset it

Locked out of your iPad and forgot your iPad passcode? Use a computer to get your iPad into recovery mode so you can erase it and set it up again.

Forgot the passcode on your iPhone?

Forgot the passcode on your iPod touch?

Use your iPad to reset your iPad passcode

Use your old passcode to temporarily access your iPad in iPadOS 17 or later

Learn what to do if you see "[Device] unavailable" or "Security Lockout" on your iPad .

If you enter the wrong passcode on your iPad Lock Screen too many times, an alert lets you know that your iPad is disabled.

If you can't remember your passcode when you try again, you need to use a computer to put your iPad in recovery mode. This process deletes your data and settings, including your passcode, allowing you to set up your iPad again.

After you erase your iPad, you can restore your data and settings from a backup. If you didn't back up your iPad, you can set it up as a new device and then download any data that you have in iCloud.

Old Habits Die Screaming Songs

When Taylor Swift announces an album, the world takes an interest. That’s certainly what happened in the days after she unveiled THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT, as intrepid Swifties began hunting and assembling and pinning clues to digital corkboards, eventually landing on the theory that her 11th studio album is sure to explore the five stages of heartbreak. And when Swifties agree upon a theory, Taylor takes an interest—so, naturally, she’s responded by crafting a series of exclusive playlists, choosing songs of her own that fit each stage. The fourth stage is depression, and sadness is something Taylor’s captured in song as well as anyone ever has. Take the radiant longing of “champagne problems,” for example—written and recorded during the global pandemic, when we needed it most. Or what about “We Were Happy (Taylor’s Version)” and “Forever Winter (Taylor’s Version),” slightly older standbys that are just as comforting and relatable—songs you can fall into, for sure, but songs that can hold you as well.

Earth Day 2024: Where and How to Recycle Your Old Computers and Printers for Free

T his Earth Day, do your part to ease the burden on our landfill. Instead of throwing away your old  laptops ,  desktops  and  printers , choose one of the many ways you can responsibly recycle them for free and sometimes even for store credit.

In some states, including California, throwing them away is actually illegal and can draw large fines. And disposing of such items can be as simple as bringing them to major retailers such as Best Buy, OfficeMax, Office Depot and Staples.

It's a necessary habit to get into, as well. According to a new UN report , consumers around the world are throwing away about five times more gadgets than are being recycled.

Here's what you need to know about recycling your old tech.

Read more:  Why Our Gadgets Aren't Getting Recycled Enough, and How You Can Help

What to do before recycling your computer

Wherever you choose to take or mail in your items to be recycled, you'll want to make sure that you protect your data by removing it as best you can before you do so. One way to do this is to perform a factory reset on your computer. Our guide talks you through the process.

Retailers that recycle computers and printers

Some retail stores will accept computers and printers for recycling, but it's not always a free service. Policies vary by company.

Apple

You can recycle your old Apple computers, monitors and peripherals such as printers for free at an Apple Store, but there's a costly catch. According to the Apple Free Recycling program, in order to receive this service, you must also purchase a qualifying Apple computer or monitor. Need another option? A third-party company called Gazelle buys old MacBooks to recycle them. After accepting Gazelle's offer, you print out a prepaid label or request a prepaid box and ship the machine to them.

Best Buy generally accepts up to three household items per person per day to be recycled for free, and that includes desktop computers and printers, as well as other items, ranging from e-readers to vacuum cleaners . While three is the limit for most items, there's a higher standard for laptops -- Best Buy will take five of those per household per day. Note that rules for dropping off monitors vary by state, and it's not always free to do so.

Best Buy also offers a mail-in recycling service for select items, but that's also not free. A small box that holds up to 6 pounds costs $23, while a large box (up to 15 pounds) costs $30.

Office Depot and OfficeMax

Office Depot and OfficeMax merged in 2013. The retailers offer a tech trade-in program both in-store and online where customers may be able to get a store gift card in exchange for their old computers and printers. If the device has no trade-in value, the company will recycle it for free.

Office Depot also sells its own tech recycling boxes that you can fill up with electronics to be recycled and then drop off at the stores, but they aren't free. The small boxes cost $8.39 and hold up to 20 pounds; the medium ones cost $18.29 and hold up to 40 pounds; and the large cost $28 and hold up to 60 pounds.

You can bring your old desktop computers, laptops, printers and more to the Staples checkout counter to be recycled for free, even if they weren't purchased there. The retailer also has a new free at-home battery recycling box which, according to a rep, has led to customers recycling thousands of batteries per week, up from an earlier average of 50 batteries per week. Here's a list of everything that can be recycled at Staples.

Read more:   How to Factory Reset a MacBook, Windows Laptop or Chromebook

How to find tech recycling centers

If you don't live near a major retailer or would rather take your computers and printers to a recycling center, you can locate places close to you by using search tools provided by Earth911 and the Consumer Technology Association.

Use the recycling center search function on Earth911 to find recycling centers near your ZIP code that accept laptops, desktops and printers. Note that the results may also turn up some places that accept mobile phones and not computers or printers, so you may have to do a little filtering.

CTA's Greener Gadgets

Consult the Consumer Technology Association's Greener Gadgets Recycle Locator to find local recycling centers in your area that will take old items. The search function also allows you to filter the results to separately hunt for places that take computers versus printers.

Computers and other devices sit awaiting recycling.

Threads testing new option to let users automatically archive old posts

Avatar for Filipe Espósito

Meta has been experimenting with a lot of new features for Threads, its microblogging platform. Now Instagram boss Adam Mosseri revealed on Wednesday that the platform has started testing an option that will let users automatically hide old posts from Threads after a certain period of time.

Threads wants to let users easily archive old posts

In a post shared by Mosseri , the executive shows a screenshot of the new feature in action. Users will be able to choose to automatically archive posts older than a certain period of time, so that they disappear from their profile. Mosseri also said that users will always have the option of making these posts public again as they won’t be permanently deleted.

The feature is part of a test and Mosseri and his team are still not sure whether to make it officially available to everyone or not. A few weeks ago, Mosseri ran a poll on his personal profile asking what Threads users would think about automatically archiving old posts by default. The majority of votes were against the idea.

In this beta implementation, users must first opt-in to have their older posts automatically archived. The feature can end up being either scrapped or changed. While some users seem to have liked the idea, others are still skeptical about its usefulness.

A few days ago, Threads began rolling out the option to let users filter search results by the most recent rather than the suggested ones. The feature is also beta and available to a “small number of people.” The platform has also introduced sports scores into its search .

You can  download the Threads app for free on the App Store . Make sure you have the latest version of the app installed to get access to the new features.

(Photo by Ash Donelon/Manchester United via Getty Images)

At the end of last season Manchester United were spoilt for choice when he came to anointing their player of the year.

In the end, it was Marcus Rashford who earned the title and the club’s Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award, after scoring a career-high 30 goals to help United finish third in the Premier League and win the Carabao Cup.

Rashford faced strong competition from a host of other players, including two new signings, Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro, who bolstered United with their calm and composed presence in defence and midfield, as well as Luke Shaw, who enjoyed a another brilliant season at left-back.

In contrast a year later, as we approach the end of this season, the shortlist of candidates to succeed Rashford is looking alarming small.

For several months the consensus was Diogo Dalot had been United’s best player, and though the Portuguese international has been in exceptional form, cementing his position in the side with a succession of impressive performances, it would also be emblematic of this struggling side if the award was to be won by a right-back.

But in recent weeks Dalot’s claims have been overtaken by his international team-mate Bruno Fernandes, who has scored seven goals in his last six Premier League games, and proven himself to be United’s most influential player this season.

Apple iphone 16 unique all new design promised in new report, rudy giuliani and mark meadows indicted in arizona fake electors case.

Amid a disappointing season, which has seen United fall out of the Champions League at the group stage, and throw away their chance to return to the competition next season by sliding down the table, where they are likely to finish sixth or seventh, Fernandes has been a beacon, providing leadership, assists and goals.

The playmaker might spilt opinion, and often attracts the ire of opposition fans, but it is obvious he has stopped United enduring an even worse season, and made it possible that they could even finish with a trophy.

It is difficult to imagine this United side without Fernandes, partly because he has an incredible record and plays in virtually every game, but mainly because he always offers something; a spark of genius, a defence-splitting pass or a crucial goal.

After scoring two goals in United’s 4-2 victory over Sheffield United on Wednesday, Fernandes become the club’s leading scorer with a total of 15 goals this season.

These have included a match-winning penalty against Nottingham Forest, a superbly struck volley to defeat Burnley, a dramatic last minute winner against Fulham, a strike from near the halfway line against Liverpool, and a crucial goal against Coventry City in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley last weekend.

Fernandes also has a healthy amount of assists, 11 in all competitions, to give him a total of 26 goal contributions this season, which is greater than Martin Odegaard (20), Kevin De Bruyne (19), Bernardo Silva (16) and James Maddison (11).

And in contrast to all his competitors Fernandes has done it in a struggling side on course for possibly their worst ever Premier League season.

Fernandes is not without his faults; he can be rash, and petulant, and often tries to do too much, and be everywhere on the pitch, but there is a reason the United manager Erik ten Hag made him his captain this season.

He remains a leader on the pitch, who does not shirk responsibility and refuses to give up, constantly imploring his team-mates to keep going in games.

“He showed his leadership in this game, but also with his energy, his transition both ways is very important and he always tries to encourage the team,” Ten Hag said this week after the win over Sheffield United. “He is doing very well and we are very pleased with his performances and his attitude.”

On Wednesday night at Old Trafford, Fernandes showed these leadership skills when he pulled aside United’s 18-year-old striker Ethan Wheatley, who was making his first team debut as a substitute, and said, “I’ve got nine minutes to get you a goal.” Alas, it didn’t happen, but it showed how Fernandes can be a selfless player and want the best for the team.

It is just one of the many reasons why Fernandes deserves to be United’s Player of the Year for the third time since he arrived at Old Trafford in 2020.

A Guide to the Most Beautiful Green Spaces in Moscow

Izmailovsky park in Moscow

Home to more parks than any other city in Russia , Moscow offers a cornucopia of choice when it comes to green spaces. From innovative wild urbanism to 18th-century royal estates, here are the best places to escape from the city buzz in Russia’s capital.

Spread over a territory of almost 300 acres, Gorky Park is Moscow’s most popular green space. Opened in 1928, it was designed as ‘a city inside a city’ with its own telegraph, police unit and a doctor’s office. Some 90 years later, Gorky Park offers everything from segway rides to an open-air movie theatre, through to illuminating lectures and fantastic dining spots.
