Think of overlanding, the latest craze in the adventure vehicle world, as backpacking, but with your car.  Overland Journal (the go-to source on the subject) defines the sport as “self-reliant adventure travel to remote destinations where the journey is the primary goal.” It comes down to traveling long distances on rough roads to a remote destination in an off-highway-capable vehicle (bikes included).

While a tricked out adventure vehicle like a 70 Series Land Cruiser or a Land Rover Defender is highly encouraged, your Subaru can probably get you farther than you think (provided you pack accordingly). The big draw is covering lots of distance off the beaten path with everything you need to survive. So, once you find that Syncro or CJ5 you’ve been scouring Craigslist for, here’s a list of trails that should be on your overland bucket list:

The Trans-America Trail

overland outdoor adventure trips

Tennessee to Oregon

Motorcycle enthusiast Sam Correro developed the Trans-America Trail (TAT) in an attempt to create a coast-to-coast off-pavement motorcycle route. The TAT winds nearly 5,000 miles on a connection of dirt, forest service, gravel, and jeep roads from Southeastern Tennessee to Southwestern Oregon.  On his website , Correro says the TAT is not for everyone and requires a “special ‘love’ for a motorcycle.” In 2013 a group of Land Rover LR4’s  completed the route , proving that it can be done in a larger vehicle.

The Alpine Loop Scenic Byway

overland outdoor adventure trips

Silverton, Colorado

The Alpine Loop starts in Silverton, Colorado , and winds 63 miles through the heart of the San Juan Mountains. Nestled between highways 550 and State Road 149, the route is closed during the winter, and the high alpine environments of Engineer and Cinnamon Passes (both over 12,000 feet) require a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle. The entire loop takes around four to six hours, and you’ll pass seven abandoned mining towns along the way, along with plenty of opportunities for hiking and camping. There are more challenging routes in the area, like the Black Bear Pass Road route, but if you’re looking for a mid-length overland route with spectacular mountain views in the Rockies, this is your trail.

The Rubicon Trail

overland outdoor adventure trips

Georgetown, California

There’s a reason Jeep named their most off-road worthy model of the Wrangler the Rubicon. The Rubicon Trail runs 22 miles from Georgetown to Tahoma, just west of Lake Tahoe, over slick granite and through classic Sierra Nevada scenery. This isn’t a trip for those worried about scratching their vehicle, and the Rubicon Trail Foundation  recommends several vehicle modifications like larger tires and a lift kit to prevent damage. The reward for all that preparation is a few days of camping along one of the most famous overland routes in the world.

Cape Lookout National Seashore

overland outdoor adventure trips

North Carolina’s Outer Banks

North Carolina’s barrier islands provide an incredible outdoor playground, including some fantastic overland routes if you know where to go. Our favorite: the islands that make up the 56 mile long Cape Lookout National Seashore —North Core and South Core Banks. South Core is the more remote of the two—you’ll have to ferry your vehicle from the mainland. There are no paved roads, and you can camp anywhere you’d like along the beach so long as you don’t drive through the sand dunes.

The Dalton Highway

overland outdoor adventure trips

If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve already heard of the Dalton Highway . The mostly gravel road in Northern Alaska stretches 414 miles from Livengood to Deadhorse. It was originally built as a service road for the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and is still considered one of the most dangerous roads  in the U.S., mainly because of the lack of services and cell phone reception along the entire route. The payoff for braving the Dalton? You get to see some of the most spectacular wilderness in the country, traversing the Brooks Range and crossing the Yukon River en route to the Arctic Ocean.

The Mojave Road

overland outdoor adventure trips

Mojave National Preserve, California

The 140-mile Mojave Road  is a classic U.S. desert route that usually takes two to four days to traverse and requires four-wheel drive. Originally a Native American trade route and later a wagon trail, the rough and sandy track runs east to west through the Mojave National Preserve in California, crossing several mountain ranges before terminating near Barstow, California.

Overlanding vs. Camping: What's the Differences, and Which is Better?

Overlanding and camping are both immersive outdoor experiences, but they have distinct characteristics that set them apart. Camping typically involves setting up a base at a designated campground and exploring the surrounding areas on day hikes or short excursions.

On the other hand, overlanding revolves around the journey itself, where the travel becomes an integral part of the adventure.

Sure, manufacturers do a relatively good job of producing vehicles that can go off-road. However, there are certainly many improvements to be made. When a vehicle is designed, factory engineers try to strike the balance between off-road abilities and on-road performance.

In this post we discuss what we consider the Top 10 most important upgrades when building your off-roader.

Overlanding Safety Tips: Exploring the Great Outdoors with Confidence

While overlanding can be an exhilarating experience, it also comes with potential risks, especially when venturing into remote and uncharted areas. Prioritizing safety is essential for a successful overlanding trip.

Before embarking on your adventure, thoroughly research the destinations you plan to visit, assess potential hazards, and plan alternative routes in case of unexpected challenges.

Overlanding: Solar Power Setups

As outdoor enthusiasts, we all want to enjoy the great outdoors without sacrificing our comfort. That's why solar power is the perfect solution for camping and overlanding adventures! Not only is it a convenient source of energy, but it's also eco-friendly and cost-effective.

What is the best GPS for Overlanding?

Navigation is a vital aspect of overlanding, as many adventures take you through remote regions with limited cell service and no internet access. Choosing the best GPS device will help you stay on track and navigate with confidence.

Handheld GPS devices are popular among overlanders for their ruggedness and long battery life, making them reliable companions on extended trips.

Onboard Air Compressor Setups

Are you an avid overlander?

Upgrading to an onboard air system is a must for any serious off-roader! Not only does it provide you with the flexibility to adjust tire pressure on the go, but it also opens up a world of possibilities with other air-powered accessories.

Adequate clothing for various weather conditions is a must, including waterproof and insulated layers, as well as hats and sunglasses for sun protection. Additionally, make sure to bring ample food supplies and drinking water, especially when traveling to remote areas with limited access to resources.

Why Overland Expo Should Go on Every Outdoor Adventurer's Bucket List

"It was like a home and garden show for those without homes or gardens"

overland outdoor adventure trips

Jon Ratliff

Overland Expo West

After settling into my room at the Cliffrose Lodge in Springdale, Utah, I pulled the curtains back to my magnificent view of Zion National Park . This was quite the contrast from my first experience attending the Overland Expo in 2018.

Nearly four years ago, I had no idea what I was getting into. Still, the temptation was enough for me to hop on my BMW GS1200 motorbike and ride the 950 miles each way from my then-home in Fort Worth, Texas, to Coconino Fairgrounds in Flagstaff, Arizona, to check it out. It didn't disappoint.

Overland Expo is the country's premier event for overland travel. Held annually in May, the event serves to promote traditional overlanding—a unique combination of off-roading and camping, often through remote or hard-to-access places—through numerous classes, activities, and programs led by the world's top vehicle and motorcycle driving instructors and overlanding experts. There are also exhibitors of vehicles, motorcycles, outdoor gear and services, and on-site camping. Think a Burning Man for outdoor-adventure types meets a home and garden show for those without homes or gardens.

From the moment I rolled up, I felt something different going on here that I wasn't experiencing in my "regular" life. It was a hot May afternoon in Flagstaff when I set up my tent under the shade of the pine trees along with many other moto-campers and decided to soak it all in for the next couple of days. These people were outside, smiling, laughing, sharing stories, food, drink, and anything else you might want or need.

Fast forward to summer 2021, and I received a request to attend the Overland Expo West again, only this time it would be quite a bit more comfortable but just as adventurous.

In 2021, my overland trail tour started from the Cliffrose, where we received some off-road driving instruction from Jim West and Chris Walker from 7P Overland —and then we met our lineup of vehicles.

From the "tricked out" Ultimate Overland Toyota 4Runner to a Honda Ridgeline HPD, a Subaru Outback Wilderness, Swarovski Optik Land Rover Defender, Mercedes 4x4 Sprinter Field Van, and a Jeep Gladiator, we had it covered when it came to off-road adventure travel.

After leaving the entrance of Zion National Park, we traversed some of the most beautiful desert landscapes imaginable. We even enjoyed a delicious mid-day trail lunch prepared by our chefs, Jason Schaub of Overland Cookery and Danny Nally from The Basin .

Finally, after a long, dusty day of driving and exploring, we set up camp at Grand Staircase Escalante, where we each laid claim to our sleeping arrangements for the next two nights. I decided that the Eezi-Awn rooftop tent mounted atop the Swarovski Land Rover Defender courtesy of Ben Lizdos would suit me just fine!

After sundown, Ben set up a spotting scope, and we viewed the desert sky as I'd never seen before. We enjoyed a warm campfire, cocktails, dinner, and laughter late into the night.

I awoke the following day and crawled down from my rooftop Land Rover Defender-sized bed to a beautiful desert sunrise and the smell of fresh coffee brewing and a hearty breakfast again being prepared by our chef duo.

Finally, we broke camp and continued our trek heading south, slowly making our way towards Flagstaff and the Overland Expo West 2021.

But there was still loads of fun to be had on the trail.

I spent one day driving the Subaru Outback Wilderness and the Honda Ridgeline before hopping in the Overland Expo's Ultimate Toyota 4Runner build, which was on another level. Whether it was the Mercedes Sprinter 4x4 Field Van, Land Rover Defender, or Jeep Gladiator, each vehicle was impressive and unique and a true reminder of what overlanding is and can be.

Up early again to a Grand Canyon rim sunrise and coffee brewing, we knew our trip would soon end. We all enjoyed our final breakfast together, packed up camp, and made our final push toward Flagstaff.

After arriving at 2021's Expo and walking around a bit, I was immediately reminded of what drew me to this kind of event in the first place. It was smiling faces and happy people. Many of the people I met years ago as strangers are now friends.

In May 2018, while riding back home from my first Overland Expo, I had a lot of time to think. I had a crazy idea that I thought I'd "pitch' to my wife, inspired by overlanding and some of the people I had met: "Let's quit our jobs, sell the house, everything we own, buy an RV, and hit the road and see what happens?"

Believe it or not, she said, "yes." While your overlanding story might not end the same way, whether you're looking for a life-changing adventure or just want to check out the best in overland and outdoor gear, Overland Expo is a must for every adventurer's bucket list.

Tips for Attending Overland Expo

  • This year's Expo will be held May 20-22, 2022, at Ft. Tuthill County Park, in Flagstaff, Arizona. The event will feature more than 400 exhibitors and more than 150 different classes and educational sessions.
  • Book early and camp on-site. There are many ticket options available for camping. Weekend vehicle, weekend moto-camping, and daily general admission tickets.
  • Enjoy the outdoor food pavilion, which relies on local vendors—no over-processed frozen food here.
  • To avoid lines entering the expo, arrive early. You'll want to spend the whole day there anyway.
  • While simply walking around can be tempting, schedule some time to attend a few of the many workshops and demonstrations. They cover everything from motorcycle skills to back-country safety, so there's truly something for everyone.
  • Make a weekend of it, and remember that Grand Canyon National Park is only an hour and a half away.

TOP 10 GREATEST OVERLAND TRIPS IN NORTH AMERICA

Overlanding is one of the most incredible adventure activities of our times. This is especially true when you can embark on these overland camping adventures without ever setting off on an airplane or sea transport. Technology’s greatest gift is automobiles, and ever since man invented them, we have sought to traverse the extremes everywhere. This is where travel trailer manufacturers come in to help.

These automobiles have given man the flexibility to roam around the world and make tracks where there were none before. The 4x4 vehicles of our times are more powerful than ever, enabling us to venture deeper into continents. Here, we list the best overland routes for the perfect overland adventure in North America.

The Best Overland Routes for Adventure and Exploration

Overland trips require plenty of planning; some trips can be months long, while others are weekend escapades into the wilderness. We have got you the perfect mix of overland trip routes to consider for your next camping and off-road adventure.

1. Holmul, Guatemala

The first overland route on our list takes you on an 'Indiana Jones-style adventure. Deep into the jungle with muddy tracks and plenty of natural wildlife at your disposal, it is one for the truest overland adventure lovers. It is dotted with Mayan archaeological sites of Nakum and Tikai, under the shadow of which you can camp.

2. Mexican Hat to Moab, Utah

If you’re looking for an overland trip in North America, then choose the Mexican Hat to Moab, Utah circuit, for the best off-roading camping trails. Its scenery reminds one of the great outbacks. This overland route starts from the Mexican Hat on the San Juan River and ends in the Beef Basin and Elephant Hill with a maximum altitude of 3000.

3. Baja, Mexico

Baja, Mexico, is one of the most rugged and serene overland trips on this list. It offers two overland routes, with one slightly more remote and wild, starting on the MEX1 and winding towards San Evaristo. Both trails offer scenic views of canyons and deep gorges, culminating in pristine beaches perfect for overland camping.

4. Canyon De Chelly

Canyon de Chelly offers one of the most extraordinary overland adventures in North America. Located in the northeast of Arizona, this overland route has two trails. One follows the bottom of the canyon, and the other skirts the top, offering majestic vistas. The trails are easily accessible in the summer months, whereas spring can be treacherous.

5. The Dempster Highway

Wilderness and isolated places have always filled the adventurer with anticipation. The Dempster Highway in the winters offers just that, a ride full of adrenaline-filled adventure. This overland trip goes up to the last accessible human settlement of Canada, Tuktoyaktuk. The 3000-mile long overland trip follows the McKenzie River for some scenic winter wonderlands.

overland outdoor adventure trips

6. The Trans-America Trail

For all motorcycle enthusiasts, the Trans-America trail is the best off-road camping trail. This east-west connects the two coastal areas of the United States through dirt roads and off-road tracks. It is the perfect overland route for the diversity of vistas, magnificent sceneries, and a challenging ride spanning almost 5000 miles.

7. The Mojave Road

The Mojave Road is an overland trip that offers a staunch history lesson. Venue to one of the deadliest standstills involving a lot of death, the route is dotted with the barren Mojave vistas. The 160km off-road track is one of the longest continuous stretched of off raid trails. It also offers highs such as the 6000 ft. tall Pinyon Pines and lows of the dry lakes.

8. The Grand Arizona Traverse

The Grand Arizona Traverse is a must-visit route if you’re an adventure seeker. This overland route offers a challenge like no other that must be traversed by an experienced driver with a fine set of tires. A 4WD vehicle with plenty of road clearance will get you to the edge of the Grand Canyon, with views aplenty.

9. The McKenzie Trail

The McKenzie Trail is one of the most arduous overland trips one can find. This off-road is often traversed on foot due to its demanding nature. It goes through boggy mud swamps, hilly terrains, and full-blown forests, making it an adventure of a lifetime. It is suggested to keep a company of three well-stocked vehicles, a winch and a Sat phone on hand.

10. Punta Mariato, Panama

Are you interested in going to the southernmost tip of North America? Punta Mariato in Panama is a point hundred kilometers inroad from the main highways and just as beautiful. The mud roads leading to it are tricky, but the magnificent ocean-side offers some exotic sceneries for an excellent overland adventure.

Comparing Outward Bound, Moondance Adventures, Wilderness Adventures, Apogee Adventures, and other summer camps for teens

NOLS and Outward Bound are great wilderness educational experiences, and we highly recommend them for adults, college students, people who are seeking education for an outdoor career, or anyone seeking a specific skill focus. There are other summer programs for teens that also offer outdoor adventure travel, but there are many differences, which we’ve outlined below.

Adventure Treks is designed exclusively for teenagers and is best suited for young people who desire a fun yet challenging, community-minded outdoor summer adventure .

An Adventure Treks trip is often our new students’ first big outdoor experience, and it’s our priority to make the outdoors fun, inclusive, and accessible. All teenagers need challenge and appropriate risk in order to grow, but we think it’s crucial that they also have a blast while outside! Our goal is that students arrive home after Adventure Treks feeling much more confident, accomplished, proud, capable, and independent—and wanting to do it all over again the following summer! This is why our student return rate tends to be higher than other companies.

Enjoying the outdoors and physical challenges with a team of kids your own age is a great way to get your teen ready for the independence of college life. *Proprietary information was not publicly shared. **At minimum, Adventure Treks requires our instructors to be certified as wilderness first responders, which is an intensive 80-hour course that also includes CPR. Other companies only require wilderness first aid (16–20 hours) and CPR and first aid (4–6 hours).

It was an amazing trip filled with incredible instructors, students, and activities. Adventure Treks was very organized from the moment that I first called with questions through to the end of the trip. Landon thoroughly enjoyed the trip and can’t wait to go on another one next summer. I think it was valuable that Landon was part of a community and worked together as a team with other students and instructors to make all of the activities possible. It was great that he was able to strengthen life and social skills. Communication with the AT office was excellent. Before signing my son up for the trip, I had many questions and Amanda always made time to answer all of my questions. When his Yellowstone trip was canceled, AT was transparent and quickly helped us to find another trip. Kurt called before the trip and it was comforting to hear directly from a instructor who would be on the trip. I found the webinar before the trip to be very informative and helpful. Thank you! – Christine Tamaddon, parent from Stevenson, MD

At Adventure Treks, our students develop lifelong friends, find their best selves, and have an amazing, out-of-the-box adventures. There are other excellent outdoor-based programs and traditional summer camps, but we believe Adventure Treks stands out out for many reasons:

Most typical summer teen programs have two staff with 12–13 (or more) students; our programs have up to five to six staff with up to 20 to 24 students. Our larger staff teams are hugely beneficial to our students: More instructors mean:

  • More personalities for students to learn from and become close to;
  • A larger range and depth of knowledge, skills, personality dynamics, and experience;
  • More flexibility in optimizing student experiences;
  • And students will get the personal attention, guidance, teaching, and role modeling they deserve.

They are the backbone of our trips. Read more about our rigorous interview process for new instructors.

We don’t hire inexperienced college students looking for a summer job, like many other teen summer camps do. Our instructors are professional educators, and they return to our program because they fall in love with the community and are passionate about working with teenagers in the outdoors. Both new and returning staff go through at least two weeks of training every year (senior staff receive three weeks), and spend the weeks before their trips scouting, planning, learning about their specific trips, and getting to know their students.

More important, our instructors are able to create the safe, nurturing environment we’re known for, while also maximizing the FUN and WOW aspects of the trip!

Lastly, you’ll notice we are one of few programs who showcases our instructors’ biographies online for all prospective and enrolled families to read.

Most other programs cap their student groups at 12 to 18. However, since Adventure Treks’ inception, we’ve successfully run larger student groups of 20 to 24. There are myriad benefits:

  • There are more students from a wider variety of backgrounds to befriend.
  • We spend time in both the big group and in smaller groups of eight to 12 throughout the trip, depending on the activity. Smaller groups are beneficial in activities like backpacking, where students get more personal time with each other and instructors. They’ll get to cycle through different small activity, cooking, and tent groups throughout the trip.
  • Social dynamics are easier to manage. When you’ve got only 12 teenagers, your student spends the entire trip with that one group. With a larger group, instructors can fluidly manage social groups; if two students don’t mesh well together, we can create groups so that doesn’t negatively affect theirs or the group’s overall experience.

We include more in our tuition—like all outdoor equipment—with no hidden or extra costs. Other adventure summer camps not only require parents to pay for gear, but also for laundry, photos, and even showers. At Adventure Treks, we understand that a summer program is already a significant investment in your child’s life; we won’t nickel and dime you for gear.

Many other programs have large groups of students from one particular area, like Washington, DC, New York and New Jersey, or south Florida. We’re proud to attract students from all four corners of the United States, and from around the world. In 2022, Adventure Treks has the pleasure of welcoming students from 44 states and 16 countries!

We understand that our students are trusting us with their summer, and we make sure they don’t regret it. In fact, teenagers have such a great time that 50–60 percent of our students return to us for multiple summers (the highest student return rate in the industry). We focus not only on fun, but also on building a safe, judgment-free zone where students feel free to be their true selves. Our students are able to learn about themselves while making great friends in a respectful, positive group.

Students learn leadership, community-building, and outdoor skills in large and small groups—never alone.

In the last decade, many outdoor-centric companies have shifted to a model of including service on many of their adventures. We could make a lot of money if we chose to do this. However, we would feel guilty making money on something we believe rarely accomplishes most of its intended goals. Volunteerism on the local level has a powerful effect, even for middle and high schoolers. It costs nothing but time, and you can see the direct result of your actions. We do not see these same long-term benefits with international community service trips, also known as “voluntourism.” We’ve declined to follow the market on offering service trips. And here is why: All of the research and literature demonstrates that community service trips are rarely impactful on anyone but the individual taking the trip.

We do our best through our parent questionnaires, student questionnaires, character and school references, health forms, and follow-up conversations and interviews to make sure that our students are capable of the physical as well as the social and emotional aspects of our trips. Everyone deserves to have a great time—we want it to be easy to make new best friends!

AT went beyond our expectations in the areas of safety/expertise of the instructors, organization, experiences, and friendships our child had. Overall, it was a huge growth and learning challenge for our daughter. She says that her group are all still close and open with one another. Everyone helped, lead, and remained supportive throughout the trip. Amanda was very responsive and caring. Kyle was incredible—he is warm, caring, reliable, and I felt he had the kids’ best interest and safety in mind at all times. – Marney Whitney, parent from Chapel Hill, NC

12 Essential Idaho Road Trip Experiences

This is a sponsored post..

With such wide diversity in landscapes and outdoor recreation opportunities, Idaho is one of the most underrated states in the West. From the high desert plains to jagged mountain peaks to pristine rivers and streams, no matter what part of the state you find yourself in, we guarantee there’s someplace beautiful to explore nearby.

mountains with field in foreground

One of the best ways to get the full Idaho experience is to road trip through the state. With so many gorgeous scenic byways and charming rural towns to stop in along the way, the journey can be as much of a draw as the destinations themselves.

We compiled a road trip itinerary that features some of the best outdoor recreation activities the state has to offer. Whether you’re into kayaking, rafting, horseback riding, biking, hiking, or fly fishing, we’ve got something for you.

Located along the dramatic cliffs of the Snake River Canyon, the city of Twin Falls has a high desert climate but tons of outdoor water recreation.

What to Do: Snake River Canyon Rim Trail

wide shot of snake river with bridge stretching over the water and kayakers below the bridge

Walk, run, or bike along the spectacularly scenic Snake River Canyon Rim Trail. The rim trail can be picked up from the northern terminus of Washington Street, next to the Visitor Center, or in Shoshone Park. Venture out to the famed Evil Knievel jump site, watch BASE jumpers leap from Perrine Bridge, or grab a drink at Elevation 486 and watch the sun set over the canyon.

Perrine-Coulee Falls  – This waterfall drops nearly 200 feet down into the Snake River Canyon, creating a continuous ribbon of water as it falls. Unlike most waterfalls, Perrine-Coulee Falls actually increases in strength during the summer because water used for irrigation spills over into the Coulee River. If you don’t mind getting a little wet, there’s even trail that leads behind the falls.

Where to Stay: Blue Lakes Inn – While the outside looks like an unassuming roadside motel, on the inside the rooms have all had a classy modern makeover. Don’t pass up this hidden gem. (Note: the complimentary breakfast here is legit!)

Where to Eat: The Buffalo Cafe – Light on amenities, heavy on character, this old fashioned hole-in-the-wall diner is where the town’s old guard gathers for breakfast.

KB’s – With five locations throughout Idaho, KB is quickly becoming the premiere burrito stop in the whole state (Recommendation: get the Jordan’s Burrito – It’s loaded with slow cooked pork, black beans, and yams!)

Slice Pizza – Delicious brick oven pizza right in downtown Twin Falls. Grab an order to go or hang out on their front patio.

From Twin Falls to Boise, take Interstate 84 heading west.

As one of the fastest growing urban centers in America, Boise is quickly becoming the new darling city of the West. With a charming downtown, new restaurants and breweries, and an abundance of outdoor recreation opportunities nearby, it’s easy to see why people are flocking to Boise. What to Do:

woman riding bike on greenbelt path

Boise Greenbelt  – Running through the heart of the city, the Greenbelt is a 25-mile pathway that runs along the Boise River. This tree-lined river corridor is both a recreation destination and means of access for pedestrians and cyclists. Take a sunset stroll, rent a bike from one of the many Green Bike stations , or grab an inner tube and float down the Boise River during the warm summer months.

Payette Brewing Tour – Feeling thirsty while pedaling down the Greenbelt? Stop by the Payette Brewery and take a brewery tour. With a brand new building, plenty of outdoor space, and tons of amazing craft brews on tap, Payette Brewing is a great place to spend the afternoon.

small flight of beers from payette brewing

Old Idaho Penitentiary – While today Boise is a very modern city, you can still connect with its western roots at the Old Idaho Penitentiary. Operated as a prison from 1872 to 1973, this historical site is open to the public. While a sobering place to visit, it offers a glimpse into what life behind bars looked like in the old American West.

Raft the Payette River with Cascade Raft & Kayak – While the city of Boise is a great place to visit on its own, its access to outdoor recreation opportunities is what truly makes it incredible. Case in point: only 45 minutes outside of town and you have access to world class whitewater. Sign up with Cascade Raft & Kayak and get an introduction to the class III & IV rapids on the South Fork of the Payette River or check out the all-ages option for the whole family. This is a must do experience!

Where to Stay: Hotel 43 – Sitting on the 43rd parallel in the 43rd state, Hotel 43 is a uniquely styled boutique hotel right in the heart of downtown Boise. (Note: Coffee drinkers rejoice. Each room comes with a Keurig coffee maker!)Where to Eat: Bacon – This breakfast and lunch bistro joint takes its bacon seriously. In addition to the standard menu, there is also a separate bacon menu with five different kinds of bacon. Bacon also makes an incredible bacon Bloody Mary.

High Note – Exceptional breakfast and lunch menu with a slight dive bar feel, the High Note is a favorite locals hangout in the middle of downtown Boise.

Bittercreek Alehouse – Casual, mindful, and often pretty busy, the Bittercreek Alehouse serves a wide range of draft microbrews alongside locally sourced pub fare. (If you like fries, cheese, and gravy, then definitely check out their poutine!)

From Boise to Stanley, take Highway 21 going north.

At the foot of the Sawtooth Mountains, the tiny town of Stanley (population 63) is one of the last remaining holdouts of the Idaho frontier. Scenically located, pristinely untouched, this town feels a little like stepping into the past. With access to nearly any type of outdoor recreation you can possibly imagine, Stanley serves as a gateway to an entire world of Idaho adventures.

What to Do: Hike in the Sawtooths Mountains – While this stunning mountain range rivals the Sierra Nevadas and the Canadian Rockies in beauty, they are very lacking in one department: crowds. Their relatively remote location makes them a haven for those looking for a more intimate connection with the natural environment. There over 700 miles of trails, 300 high mountain lakes, and 40 peaks that rise above 10,000 feet. Out here, there’s plenty of wilderness to explore.

woman hiking on path along aspen trees

Horseback riding with Redfish Lake Corrals –   If you want to experience the Sawtooths like the early settlers, then you’ve got to ride out on horseback. Redfish Lake Corrals can take you on an early morning tour where you can watch the sunrise illuminate the jagged mountain cliffs, or lead you on a day ride out to one of the many gorgeous alpine lakes. It’s an experience that won’t easily be forgotten. (If possible, ask for Kagan to be your guide! An Idaho native, he’s full of fun facts and interesting history about the area.)

people on horseback looking out over stanley area

Land of Yankee Fork State Park – Take a glimpse into Idaho’s rich mining history with a visit to Land of the Yankee Fork State Park. Explore the old mining boom towns of Custer, Bayhorse, and Bonanza or take a guided tour of one of best preserved floating gold dredges in the world. (Not all visitor center movies are worth it, but the one at Yankee Fork definitely is.)

Where to Stay: Sunny Gulch Campground – While there is traditional lodging to be found in Stanley, there is also an abundant amount of camping. Sunny Gulch is located to the south of town, but offers spectacular views of the Sawtooths at dawn. (Try to get campsite #5 and you’ll be rewarded with a fantastic view of sunrise on the Sawtooths with your morning coffee.)

Where to Eat: Stanley Baking Company & Cafe – A charming breakfast and lunch spot with legendary baked goods and a friendly atmosphere. Order coffee and baked goods to go or sit down on the front porch and enjoy a full country breakfast. (Recommendation: their sourdough pancakes!)

From Stanley to Salmon, take State Highway 75 north to US 93 and continue north.

Nestled in the Bitterroot Mountains of central Idaho, Salmon is a small rural community with some serious small town vibes. Located along the Salmon River – otherwise known as “The River of No Return” – this town balloons in size during the annual steelhead run.

What to Do: Fly Fishing the Salmon River

man fly fishing

Idaho has some of the best fly fishing in the entire country and has serious anglers planning their vacations to Salmon during peak times of the year. Whether you’re a seasoned fisherman or just looking to get into the sport, stop by The Flybox – the only full service fly fishing shop in the area. (Note: Try to speak with the owner Steve. He’s a very humble, down to earth guy and an absolute wealth of knowledge.)

Goldbug Hot Springs   – Widely considered to be one of the most “epic” hot springs in the entire country, Goldbug has a combination of attributes that make it a truly incredible experience. Its remote location and steep two miles hike tends to deter some but its terraced pools offer both seclusion and stunning views while the water is crystal clear. The bottom is stony gravel and there’s a hot water waterfall. It pretty much doesn’t get any better than that.

woman sitting in mountain hot pool

Where to stay: Stagecoach Inn – A classic roadside motel right in downtown Salmon. Enjoy views of the Salmon River that runs directly behind the property or take a short walk into town.

Where to Eat: Rise and Shine Espresso – Small funky coffee shop with an eclectic breakfast & lunch menu. Eat in or stop by their drive-thru window for an order to go.

Oddfellows Bakery – A must stop destination for anyone visiting Salmon. Great coffee, nice atmosphere, and out of this world bread!

Junkyard Bistro – A funky small town bistro and bar with a surprising amount of vegetarian and gluten free options.

Get the lowdown on hardcore gear that will transform your outdoor escapades. I'll introduce you to Hardcore lights, the game-changer in portable lighting, and reminisce about the reliability of various truck models and the value of a strong aftermarket. Hear about my journey through different truck modifications, including the trusted second gen Tacoma, and the lessons learned from balancing performance with practicality. Plus, pick up some eco-friendly tips with biodegradable products like Camp Suds - because respecting nature is always in season. Lastly, if you're itching to up your truck's game, don't miss my discussion on setting up a 12-volt power system that won't break the bank. I'm no electrician, but my hands-on experience will guide you through the nuts and bolts of adding that extra juice to your vehicle. All this, topped off with tire recommendations for tackling tough terrain, and an open invitation for community interaction. Fasten your seatbelts and get ready to amp up your overlanding skills – because adventure awaits, and we're here to make sure you're fully charged and ready to roll.

Embracing the Overlanding Lifestyle: Free Campsites, Gear Maintenance, and Rig Customization

Have you ever felt the pull of open roads and the thrill of self-reliant travel? Join me as I recount my personal transformation from a climbing enthusiast to an overlanding aficionado, where the journey is the destination. From my military background to managing a health store and opening a gym, I've woven the spirit of overlanding into the fabric of my life. This episode is a reflection of that evolution, a tale of persistence, and the joy found in the challenge of seeking out the perfect wilderness campsite. On the road and looking for a safe place to rest without reaching for your wallet? I've got the insider scoop on some of the best-kept secrets for free overnight spots that aren't just Walmart parking lots. Discover the hospitality of Cracker Barrel, the outdoor haven of Cabela's, and why gym memberships might be the nomad's best friend. I'll even share my experiences with a throttle controller that's transformed my Tacoma into an off-roading beast, along with a golden nugget about the ARB twin compressor that's made my off-road life a breeze. But it's not just about where to lay your head or what gadgets pump up your ride; it's about community, gear care, and customizing your rig to fit your adventuring style. I dive into the nuances of truck modifications, the finesse of gear maintenance, and the warmth of shared experiences. Whether you're a Jeep Wrangler enthusiast, a Lexus luxury cruiser, or a suburban owner, I promise to keep our content tailored to your interests. Together, let's keep the spirit of overlanding alive and the wheels of adventure turning.

Your 48-hour tour guide of Moscow this winter!

overland outdoor adventure trips

9 am – Visit the Red Square

Christmas market on Red Square

Christmas market on Red Square

The first thing that every tourist should do by default is visit the very heart of Moscow – it’s main and most beautiful (which ‘krasnaya’ actually meant in Old Russian) square!

There are several ways to explore it:

  • Take a selfie with Spasskaya Tower
  • Have a warm drink at the Christmas market (which lasts until mid-January)
  • Visit Lenin’s Mausoleum
  • Shop in the gorgeous adjacent GUM department store
  • Visit St. Basil’s Cathedral (and learn that it’s actually several churches under one roof).

11 am – It’s Kremlin time!

Inside the Moscow Kremlin

Inside the Moscow Kremlin

Entering the Kremlin is, actually, a bit of a quest, as it’s a presidential facility with no general access. You need to buy a ticket or, better still, book a guided tour. Inside the Kremlin’s walls, you will find ancient cathedrals, in which Russian tsars used to be crowned and buried, as well as explore the magnificent architecture of the Kremlin that reflects the rich history of the country. And, finally, you could also make a quick visit to the Moscow Kremlin Museums and admire artifacts from various Russian tsarist eras: carriages, thrones, crowns and the most incredible armory and jewelry.

For more information, visit the official website of the Kremlin . It’s open from 10 am to 5 pm (and it’s closed on Thursdays) in winter.

2 pm – Watch the changing of the Guard

The honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

A very spectacular (and free) thing to do is watch how the honor guard does their ceremonial change at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Eternal Flame, situated in Alexander Garden, right next to the Kremlin wall. Every hour, from 8 am to 8 pm, the 1st Company of the Kremlin (Presidential) Regiment performs this rather old and beautiful tradition. But, be warned, it's often overcrowded.

3 pm – Enjoy a green oasis just in the center

Florarium in Zaryadye

Florarium in Zaryadye

Just a few steps from the Red Square, you will find the fabulous Zaryadye park. Opened in 2017, it is designed by renowned American architect bureau ‘Diller Scofidio + Renfro’. You can walk among the very cozy botanical decorations and explore Russia’s climate zones, as each of them is represented in dedicated areas, complete with flora from those zones.

The floating bridge in Zaryadye Park

The floating bridge in Zaryadye Park

The park also has an underground museum, an “ice cave” and a 3D cinema, where you can take part in a virtual adventure – a flight over Moscow! However, the piece de resistance is a floating boomerang bridge over the Moskva River, one of the best places to take a selfie.

You can also grab a quick lunch or relax with a cup of coffee or tea in the park.

7 pm – Arrange a ballet night

The Bolshoi Theater

The Bolshoi Theater

Of course, the most fancy way to finish your day in Moscow would be to go to the ballet at the Bolshoi Theater (in a perfect world, to see ‘The Nutcracker’!). However, getting tickets to the Bolshoi is not an easy task and should be done well in advance of your visit.

But, don’t be upset if you don’t manage to get tickets to the Bolshoi. Moscow has dozens of other options to see a ballet (or opera). No less brilliant performances can be seen in the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theater or in The State Kremlin Palace (by the way, this is another way to get a quick glimpse inside the Kremlin!).

10:30 pm – Have a late dinner in a fancy restaurant

Dr Zhivago restaurant

Dr Zhivago restaurant

There are not so many other cities with such a big choice of restaurants in a range of tastes and styles. In 2021, the authoritative Michelin guide announced their pick of the best of Moscow’s restaurants. And here’s our guide to all the places with Russian cuisine for any budget. But, if you happen to be in the area of the Bolshoi or Nemirovich-Danchenko Theater, then ‘Dr. Zhivago’ would definitely be a nice option (and it’s open around the clock).

DAY 2

9 am – grab a moscow coffee.

Winter festivities mood in Moscow

Winter festivities mood in Moscow

Moscow is definitely a coffee city! You can find coffee shops on every corner and they all offer a huge range of drinks. Try a ‘raf’ coffee, a sweet, creamy drink that was created in Russia, or dare to pick one of the very unusual offers, like cheese coffee or a Soviet candy style one (check out our coffee guide here ).

10 am – Take a river cruise

Winter boating along the Moskva River

Winter boating along the Moskva River

Another exciting way to explore Moscow is to observe it from the water. Boats cruise along the Moskva River all year round. Most begin their route from the Hotel Ukraine, one of Stalin's ‘Seven Sister’ skyscrapers, and will bring you back to the same spot after passing the medieval Novodevichy Convent, Moscow State University and Luzhniki Stadium, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and giant monument to Peter the Great and many other sightseeings.

It’s always at optimum temperature inside the boat, which also has huge panoramic windows. Select boats also offer a full dining experience, so it is also a nice place to have breakfast or lunch.

If you are not a water person, then discover other, unusual sides of Moscow – pick one of the activities we’ve prepared for you here !

1 pm – Visit ‘Russia’ Expo and taste a bunch of Russian regional cuisines

Russia Expo at VDNKh

Russia Expo at VDNKh

Until April 2024, the Soviet-era VDNKh exhibition park is hosting the huge ‘Russia’ expo, with tons of activities and expositions devoted to Russia, its culture, science and nature. Check out our special guide on what to do there!

An entire ‘House of Russian Cuisine’ has been opened at the expo. You will find 15 food stands with flagship dishes from Kamchatka, Siberia, Karelia and other regions of Russia. Imagine trying a range of cuisines and dishes in one place without even having to travel anywhere, be it Altai pelmeni, Tula kalach or Caucasian pies! A perfect place to grab some lunch.

The VDNKh exhibition park is a great place to visit, in general! Its pavilions are the perfect example of Stalinit Empire style architecture and you can almost feel as if you’ve traveled back in time! You will also find several interesting museums in the park – devoted to space exploration, Russian history and even a ‘Special Purpose Garage’, which showcases the various vehicles used by the country’s leaders.

'Sun of Moscow' wheel

'Sun of Moscow' wheel

And, finally, you can ride Europe's tallest panoramic wheel – ‘Sun of Moscow’ – that will give you panoramic views of the city – from a height of 140 meters!

5 pm – Ice skate with view & mulled wine

Ice skating rink on Red Square (GUM department store on the background)

Ice skating rink on Red Square (GUM department store on the background)

Ice skating is one of the most popular and affordable activities in Moscow. There are several great ice skating rinks in picturesque locations that are open all winter long. One of the biggest rinks in Europe is also at the aforementioned VDNKh or you can visit the one in Gorky Park, another very popular Moscow spot, or the small, but fancy rink – right on Red Square!

All the parks offer ice skate rental, so the only things you need are warm clothes, a charged phone to record your memories and a good mood!  Moscow also gets dark at 4:30 pm in winter and hundreds of lights are switched on, turning the city into a giant fairy tale!

A mulled wine with a view

A mulled wine with a view

And, if you are not a sports person, we’ve picked several other unusual activities that you could do in Moscow instead. For example, did you know that there is an entire district of dacha (countryside) houses, just 10 minutes from the center, surrounded by giant new highrises? How about taking a stroll there and feeling the early Soviet atmosphere?

8 pm – Warm up & laugh out loud

After all these outdoor activities, what could be better than a warm cozy bar with a hot drink and nice company? Moscow is a city full of entertainment for all tastes. So, if you know the Russian language or want to practice it, go to a theater or catch a stand-up comedy show. Moscow even has comedy shows in English, where you can hear both Russians speaking fluent English or foreigners (including Brits and Americans) who live in Russia speaking in broken or heavily-accented Russian (Check their show dates on the ‘ Moscow English Comedy ’ Telegram channel)!

11 pm – Finish by partying the night away!

Propaganda club in Moscow

Propaganda club in Moscow

Moscow never sleeps, as you might have heard. Which means there are plenty of bars and nightclubs where you can have a drink (or two or three; be sure to check out how Russians make Black Russian and White Russian cocktails) and chat with incredibly different people. Have fun and don’t miss your flight (or miss it and stay longer in the best city in the world!)!

That's it! See you soon in Moscow
