As a leading producer of cheese, Pennsylvania boasts dozens of artisanal creameries throughout the state offering up uniquely delicious cheddars, Goudas, Gruyeres, Camemberts, and more.
Did you know that Pennsylvania is a leader in cheese production?
According to Statista , only seven other states produced more cheese than Pennsylvania in 2022, with nearly 40 million pounds of cheese coming from the commonwealth.
It’s not just quantity, but quality. Pennsylvania boasts dozens of artisanal cheesemakers throughout the state, many of whom can be found along the Pennsylvania Cheese Guild’s PA Cheese Trail , offering up uniquely delicious cheddars, Goudas, Gruyeres, Camemberts, and more. In fact, two Pennsylvania cheesemakers took home bronze at the 2023 World Cheese Awards , with Pleasant Lane Farms Creamery in Latrobe recognized for its 1976 Reserve Gouda, and Goat Rodeo Farm and Dairy in Allison Park winning for its Wild Rosemary and Hootenanny.
Those two award-winning cheesemakers are among the six Pennsylvania creameries we’re highlighting here:
Birchrun Hills Farm – Chester Springs
Mention Birchrun Blue to any Pennsylvania cheese lover and watch the big smile appear on their face. The award winning semi-soft blue cheese made with raw cow’s milk from Birchrun Hills Farm is a regional favorite. It’s also a favorite of Philadelphia Inquirer food critic Craig LaBan. The family-owned farm is focused on environmental stewardship, the welfare and health of its animals, and crafting the highest quality products.
Birchrun Hills hosts events on the farm including occasional Friday Happy Hours with wines from Le Garage Winery in Chester Springs and participates in farmers markets in Southeastern Pennsylvania throughout the year.
Calkins Creamery – Honesdale
Calkins Creamery specializes in fine, artisan cheese, using fresh milk from their herd of Holstein cattle. Food & Wine named Calkins’ Noble Road one of the 50 best cheeses in America in 2021.
Visitors are welcome on the farm most weekdays and on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., where they can purchase the Noble Road or other quality cheeses from Calkins such as the garlic cheddar Vampire Slayer, Moo Mozz, and Elsa Mae, a version of a washed rind Taleggio.
The Creamery at Pleasant Lane Farms – Latrobe
Crafting artisan farmstead cheese from milk produced by their small herd of dairy cows, the Creamery at Pleasant Lane Farms is known for many of its artisan cheeses, including their popular cheese curds — which one Facebook reviewer exclaims are “a-freaking-mazing” — in a variety of flavors including buffalo ranch and everything bagel, cheddar, and gouda. Pleasant Lane Farms began in 1976 by Marine veteran Ralph Frye, Jr. and his wife Ann. In 2020, their children and business partners were added to the creamery.
They welcome visitors to the farm and offer one-hour tours on Saturdays. In addition to cheese, the Creamery at Pleasant Lane Farms offers other items such as farm fresh eggs and honey.
Goat Rodeo Farm & Dairy – Allison Park
“It started, as most good stories do, with a goat.” That’s the beginning of the story of Goat Rodeo Farm & Dairy in Allison Park near Pittsburgh. The creamery now crafts award winning fresh chèvre and interesting aged cheeses, from goat milk, cow milk, and blends of both. Culture magazine named their Bamboozle a best mixed milk cheese in 2022, saying “the second you sink your teeth into a supple slice of Bamboozle, your palate is pulled through a familiar succession of flavors: cultured butter, salty ham, freshly-baked bread…”
Their cheeses — as well as caramels made from goat milk — are available online and at many locations throughout Pennsylvania and surrounding states.
God’s Country Creamery – Ulysses
The family owned and operated God’s Country Creamery is dedicated to quality, artisan cheese made from all natural, raw milk from grass-fed cows who are given no artificial growth hormones. They craft cheddar, Gouda, Gruyere, Swiss, havarti, and other block cheeses.
At the on-site farm store that’s open Monday through Saturday, customers can purchase their cheese, and raw milk, as well as ice cream, yogurt, bakery items, local meat, eggs, soups, and more. God’s Country has a commercial kitchen on site that makes many of the foods in the farm store.
Goot Essa – Howard
Goot Essa — which means “good food” or “good eating” in Pennsylvania Dutch — is an Amish cooperative that began in 2001. Each family cares for their small farms and their animals with love and respect. The resulting cheese and other products that come from the cooperative are fresh and high quality.
The cheese from Goot Essa comes from cow, goat, and sheep milks and is made from natural ingredients with no preservatives. As one Facebook reviewer commented, they “would be right at home in a posh fromagerie.” In addition to cheese, their selections include jams, fruit butters, spreads, honey, mustards, and more.

Hit the Ice Cream Trail for a local scoop of something sweet in the Poconos
Looking to explore the Commonwealth and pick up a sweet treat along the way?
Just in time for the dog days of summer, The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture along with the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) has released their picks for Scooped: An Ice Cream Trail.
With 31 locations to choose from spanning the entire state, there is no better time to load into the family roadster for a scenic drive.
The eastern portion of the trail meanders from Waymart down Chester Springs with 10 stops to choose from.
"This ice cream trail provides consumers an opportunity to experience Pennsylvania's rich agricultural heritage while learning more about the dairy industry, supporting small businesses, and enjoying a scoop, or several, of PA Preferred ice cream," said Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding.
Local scoops
Creamworks Creamery: Wayne County boasted two stops on the tour, with Creamworks Creamery, 1557 Creek Drive in Waymart, is the northernmost stop on the tour.
The creamery has been bottling milk since July 2010, and "...strives to offer fresh, wholesome dairy products to our consumers." With more than 16 flavors to choose from, there is sure to be something to tickle everyone's taste buds. Learn more by visiting creamworkscreamery.com.
Keating's Ice Cream: The next stop is Keating's Ice Cream, located at 1642 Archbald Mountain Road in Lake Ariel. This shop is located on Keating's Heavens Gate Farm, and offers a wide variety of flavors throughout the summer season.
Manning's Dairy Farm: Lackawanna County is the home of Manning's Dairy Farm in North Abington Township. They have more than 50 flavors, and also offer ice cream pies and ice cream cakes.
The farm is located on Manning Road in Dalton, and retail locations are found in Clarks Summit, Scranton and Dunmore. All locations are cash only. For more information, visit manningfarm.com/.
More to explore
The Scooped: An Ice Cream Trail is divided into three sections: West, south central and east. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture along with the PA Preferred program, DCED's Tourism Office and the Center for Dairy Excellence launched this trail in 2018 as a way to aid the state's "...more than 5,400 dairy farm families and the small businesses that source from them..." while offering a way for people "...to explore the commonwealth by the scoop."
More: Cool it: Check out these Pocono ice cream spots

This year, a record number of stops are part of a cool summer tradition in Pennsylvania.
“Scooped: An Ice Cream Trail” has launched for the 2023 season with 42 participating creameries.
Originally started in 2018, the Pennsylvania ice cream trail is a partnership between the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and its PA Preferred program, The Department of Community and Economic Development’s Tourism Office, and the Center for Dairy Excellence.
The trail isn’t just for ice cream but it is designed to take visitors throughout Pennsylvania and also gives visitors a chance to meet the people behind the ice cream. There are more than 5,200 dairy farm families in Pennsylvania.
This year, those who log onto the ice cream trail website and visit at least six creameries will receive a commemorative Scooped stainless-steel ice cream scooper. Every time you visit one of the participating creameries and make a purchase, you’ll receive a check-in PIN code.
The promotion ends on Sept. 9.

Want a sweet treat to beat the heat? Central Pa. has many great ice cream shops to visit
There are over 5,400 dairy farms located in Pennsylvania, with 99 percent being family owned, and all that dairy leads to one sweet treat - ice cream!
If you are looking to beat the heat this summer and enjoy some local ice cream, here’s the scoop on some of the best ice cream shops central Pa. has to offer.
The Pennsylvania tourism website, VisitPa.com , offers an ice cream vendor guide called "Scooped: An Ice Cream Trail" that divides the state into three regions - West, South Central and East.
The tourism department, along with the PA Department of Agriculture, hosts an Annual Pursue Your Scoops Ice Cream Trail, where ice cream-loving patrons can get a passport stamped for each ice cream shop that they visit listed on any of the trails. Once they complete one full trail, they can then redeem a completed passport for a prize.
This year would have been the third annual event, but the passport redemption piece of the trail will not be provided due to COVID, according to the website. However, ice cream shops on the trails are still open for curbside, delivery or in-person dining, so you can still get a scoop (or several) of fun by taking a creamery tour of central Pa.
The South Central trail is the largest of the three and includes some of these area shops. Information is provided by the VisitPa website. Check the business sites for details, including current hours and menus.

For the full South Central ice cream trail, click here .
Aside from the trail, there are many other great places to stop for ice cream in the region, and one of the most iconic is The Haines Shoe House , which is now open for the 2021 season.
Melanie Schmuck owned the Shoe House with her husband, Jeff. She passed away in February 2019, but the landmark reopened with Jeff taking charge.
The pair bought the home, which can be seen from Route 30, in 2015.
Located at 197 Shoe House Road in Hellam Township, York County, the Haines Shoe House (modeled after a work boot) was built by shoe salesman Mahlon Haines in 1948 as a form of advertisement. The house is 25 feet tall.
Visitors can take a tour of the unusual house and buy Beck's Ice Cream while there.

A Rare Passion for Animals & Cheese
Happy goats.
As a farmstead creamery, we raise our goats on the farm and make cheese from their milk, which allows us to manage every aspect of our cheese production. Our herd of goats graze on three acres of open pasture and oak woodlands and are protected by our dedicated Anatolian Shepherds, Lily and Gus. Our herd consists of all registered LaManchas, the only breed of goats developed in the United States, notable for their tiny ears.
Historic Ranch
Founded in 1870 and evolving through the centuries, Stepladder Ranch transitioned from cattle to a diverse operation under the Russells in the 1980s, introducing avocados and a unique climate that supports over 200 crop varieties. Now managed by their grandson Jack Rudolph and his wife Michelle, the ranch has embraced cheesemaking, producing a wide range of goat and cow cheeses, while preserving its agricultural heritage. The iconic big, red barn, over 110 years old and built by Danish shipbuilders, symbolizes the ranch's history and the enduring legacy of innovation.
Award Winning Creamery
As a farmstead creamery, we raise our goats on the farm and make cheese from their milk, which allows us to manage every aspect of our cheese production.
Our goals are to create world class products and to provide a positive and meaningful workplace for our staff, as well as a healthy, sustainable environment for our animals.

"Aside from cuddling a goat, the highlight was the samples!! All of the different cheese varieties were amazing. And they did not skimp on the samples - you really got to taste all of the flavors of goat and cow cheese."

"Have any doubts about booking a tour? Don't. Just sign up and be happy. Happy petting goats. That's my new mantra when I am stressed...just pretend I am still petting very human-friendly, adorable, very well taken care of goats. Whitney did a great job on our tour- it was informative, fun and interactive. The cheese tasting was great too. "
J. Mo - Trip Advisor 5 Star Rating
"Stepladder is a family favorite of ours! The ranch is beautifully maintained, the staff is unbelievably knowledgeable and friendly, and tours feel intimate and personal. You must go on the goat hike. It was life-changing to share the road with them and get a sense of their behavior and daily life."
Dawn Y. - Trip Advisor 5 Star Rating
"We love visiting. Seeing the goats and how the dairy works is so great! The real star of the show however are the dogs. The big white shepherds that keep the herd safe and the funny border collie that just wants to play.*
