Pro Tennis Returns Again To Forest Hills With UTS Event In August Featuring Nick Kyrgios

March 23, 2024 by Randy Walker Leave a Comment

UTS (Ultimate Tennis Showdown), a new thrilling and innovative tennis tour with a disruptive set of rules, is making its debut in New York City on August 22 – August 23, 2024 at the legendary Forest Hills Stadium, the site of the U.S. Championships, U.S. Open from 1915 until 1977.

Created by Patrick Mouratoglou, the legendary coach of Serena Williams, the concept of UTS revolves around the question “If tennis were created in the 21st century, what would it look like?” and is aimed at Gen Z and attracting new fans to the sport of tennis. UTS boasts a thrillingly innovative format and a disruptive set of rules designed to create short, action-packed matches, played in a noisy, fun atmosphere.

“We created the UTS Tour to bring another level of entertainment to tennis fans and attract a new generation of fans. Tennis has been my world for more than two decades and I want to see the sport prosper for decades to come. The heart behind UTS is to bring fast-paced entertainment, filled with excitement and emotion, and start a renovation of tennis as an entertainment platform, in addition to the traditional sport,” said UTS Founder Patrick Mouratoglou.

The two-day event in New York will feature such tennis superstars as Nick Kyrgios (AUS), Andrey Rublev (RUS), Gael Monfils (FRA), Alex de Minaur (AUS), and Casper Ruud (NOR), competing for a total prize-money of $1 million USD.

New York will be the second time the UTS Tour has headed to the US, following a brilliant weekend in Los Angeles in July 2023. Additional UTS Tour events have taken place in Oslo, Norway (February 2024) and London, UK (December 2023).

● While away from the game for the last few months, Nick “King” Kyrgios will make his UTS debut in New York. ● Andrey “Rublo” Rublev – the champion of the first UTS event of the year in Oslo, will also compete in New York and has already booked his place at the end-of-year UTS Grand Final (6-8 December). ● Alex “The Demon” de Minaur – the Australian was runner-up in Oslo, is second in the UTS race rankings and is closing in on qualifying for the season-ending showdown, and will seek to seal it in New York. ● Other UTS stars scheduled to appear include former World No.2 Casper “The Ice Man” Ruud and legendary French showman Gael “La Monf” Monfils. ● Other major players are due to join the field in the next few weeks.

A field of eight players will compete in a single elimination bracket through quarterfinals (August 22nd), aemifinals and the final (August 23rd). If a player is knocked out in the quarterfinal, he’ll still get to play a second match – a classification match to give him the chance to gain more UTS points to boost his ranking. There’s more than just points on the line at Forest Hills, with total prize money of $1 million.

UTS: A guide to the Ultimate Tennis Showdown

The Ultimate Tennis Showdown, an innovative tennis tour celebrated for its unique format, hits London this week for the very first time. GB’s Jack Draper and World No5 Andrey Rublev are among those who will battle it out in the eight-man field.

Described by its founder, Patrick Mouratoglou, UTS is a “ground-breaking reinvention of tennis, created to meet the needs of today’s generation.”

But how much do you know about this revolutionary competition?

History of UTS

Offering his expertise to one of the greatest tennis players of all time, Serena Williams, wasn’t enough for world renowned coach Mouratoglou. During the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic he decided to launch the UTS league – “the future of tennis” – which aimed to revolutionise the sport.

Mouratoglou recognised that the sport, with the average age of a tennis fan passing 60, is lacking in diversity. To combat this, the enterprising Frenchman, alongside aid from businessman Alex Popyrin, founded the new league with the aim of attracting younger generations to the sport.

The idea aroused criticism from the tennis world since its inception, yet Mouratoglou was adamant that it would be beneficial for tennis as a whole and was determined to make it a success by gathering some of the world’s top players.

UTS was launched in the heart of the pandemic, and this posed fundamental issues regarding fan attendance, but it also provided a very welcome distraction during the ATP tour’s enforced absence.

The first two editions were hosted at Mouratoglou’s academy in its sunny setting on the French Riviera and were won by former World No6 Matteo Berrettini and two-time ATP Finals champion Alexander Zverev.

A two-year absence of the competition between 2021 and 2023 left fans eagerly anticipating its return but, this year, the league is back with a bang and it’s more exciting than ever before.

The fifth and sixth editions were held in Los Angeles and Frankfurt respectively, both leading up to the inaugural Grand Final which will take place between the 15th and 17th of December at the ExCel London.

The unique format, which is inherent in Mouratoglou’s vision of providing a fresh version of tennis, is what makes UTS captivate a younger audience.

Players are selected to feature based on their “level of performance and charisma” and is done on an invitational basis. Mouratoglou feels deeply about the emotions that are built into the sport of tennis. This is the reason why we see players like Gaël Monfils and Benoit Paire in the lineup – not only do they offer an exciting style of play, but they are two players who do not shy away from showing their emotions on the court.

How to qualify for the Grand Final?

The eight-man field that will battle it out in London have qualified in one of three ways:

Title-winners: Winning a UTS tournament during the season. Rublev’s title in Frankfurt automatically granted him entry into the Grand Final.

UTS ranking: The top three players in the UTS Race ranking qualification (excluding title-winners).

Wild cards: World No8 Holger Rune and GB star Draper have been awarded wild cards to the event.

UTS Grand Final Group A

UTS Grand Final Group B

UTS Grand Final Group B

Similarly to the ATP Finals, the field has been split into two groups, and the top two from each group will advance to the semi-finals.

The scoring

Quarters: Each match consists of four eight-minute quarters. After the allotted time is up, the player with the most points wins the quarter. The first player to reach three quarters will win the match.

Sudden death: If a match is tied at two quarters apiece, a sudden death is played. The winner will be the first player to win two consecutive points.

Serving: During the quarter, players will alternate serve every two points. There is a ‘no-let’ rule in place and players are only allowed one serve. A 15-second limit between points ensures the match flows freely.

Level up: At the end of each quarter, a ‘quarter point’ is played. The leader only has to win one point to kill the quarter, whereas the challenger has the chance to win consecutive points to level up and force a decider.

Bonus cards: Once per quarter, each player has the chance to use their ‘next point counts as 3’ bonus card. This card is active for one point and applies only to the person who activated it.

Coaching: Coaching is permitted throughout the match. Players must also take part in on court interviews with the commentators in between quarters, in order to share their emotions with the fans.

All of the above rules intend to speed up the matches to allow for multiple sessions. By allowing more drama to creep into the game, UTS facilitates a more engaging watch for fans.

UTS Grand Final: London

The event will take place at ExCel London between 15-17 December.

Live coverage will be available on TNT Sports, Sky and the Tennis Channel.

Professional tennis is taking an abrupt turn this week, careening from the stately strawberries and cream and reverential hush of Wimbledon to a relatively new event that will encourage fans to make noise, feature mid-match interviews and be contested by a field that includes “The Hot Shot,” “Big Foe” and “Bublik Enemy.”

The Ultimate Tennis Showdown is coming to Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson for three days starting Friday. With matches divided into four eight-minute quarters, loose conduct rules and interaction between players and fans, the series aims to engage audiences that are accustomed to consuming entertainment in quick, action-packed bites.

Creator Patrick Mouratoglou, the Frenchman who coached Serena Williams for a decade, isn’t trying to replace what he calls “classical” tennis, the men’s and women’s pro tours. He wants to shake off stuffy traditions and create “a disruptive tour which really aims to seduce the new generation.” That means turning passive spectators into active participants.

“Tennis is one of the only sports in the world where you pay for a ticket and you’re told to shut up, which is a bit weird,” he said. “Fans are here to enjoy, shout, cry, laugh, make noise if they want to. That’s the case in the NBA, soccer, in most sports, and I think that tennis players just got used to that. And if they get used to this, they’ll be completely fine, and I think they’ll be even more excited to play.”

Wimbledon it’s not, and that’s fine. There’s room for innovation and variety, especially with World Team Tennis dormant for a second straight summer. A spokesman for the U.S. Tennis Assn. said the organization “supports events that help to grow tennis in the U.S.”

Taylor Fritz holds up his trophy after winning the men's singles finals at the BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament in 2022.

The “Hot Shot,” a.ka. Southern California native Taylor Fritz, is all for the series’ strategy of catering to young and possibly first-time fans.

“It’s a great event for people that maybe aren’t tennis fans to come to, because it’s completely new rules. So someone who is not a tennis fan would kind of be in the same boat as someone who is a tennis fan,” said Fritz, the world’s top-ranked American man at No. 9.

“The demographic, the average age of tennis fans is much older and so I think it’s definitely good trying new things to adapt and just make it more exciting.”

That’s the premise behind UTS, which first appeared in 2020 but was stalled by the pandemic. In this, its fifth event, players will perform in front of more than a handful of spectators for the first time.

Round-robin matches will be played Friday and Saturday, with the semifinals and final Sunday. Total prize money is $1.665 million. Each match will have a purse of $111,000, with the winner getting 70% and the loser earning 30%. The final will be winner-take-all.

It’s a men’s competition, though Mouratoglou hopes to stage a women’s series. Players are limited to one serve per point to promote rallies, and players will wear headsets to allow them to speak to their coaches. They’re encouraged to talk to fans and to each other.

The field is strong, in nicknames and rankings.

In addition to Fritz, scheduled participants include Frances Tiafoe (“Big Foe”), who cracked the top 10 for the first time in June at No. 10. Ben Shelton, the 2022 NCAA champion at Florida and No. 39 in the world, is “The Mountain.” Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan, No. 27 in the world, is “Bublik Enemy.” Alas, “King” Nick Kyrgios withdrew because of a wrist injury, but he will coach Tiafoe.

“Bublik Enemy” might not catch on widely, but Bublik appreciates the inspiration behind it.

“These kinds of nicknames and a big show is nice. Biggest people in different sports have nicknames, and we don’t,” he said. “Maybe if we start from there we can slowly develop something bigger and it’s going to be very, very good for the game.”

Alexander Bublik readies for a backhand return.

Bublik, who recently reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon, said he enjoyed playing a 2021 UTS event at Mouratoglou’s academy in the south of France but prefers fans to be quiet during points so players can focus. Still, he finds the UTS format appealing.

“I definitely think we need this type of event,” he said. “I think it’s really too early to talk if it’s going to change something or bring new fans to the circuit, but I think if we are proceeding and going the direction where we are going, I think UTS can be a very, very big asset for professional tennis.”

UTS represents a welcome return of high-level pro tennis here. The L.A. Open has been gone for more than a decade; the Women’s Tennis Assn. event formerly held in Manhattan Beach and Carson was last staged in 2009. The BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells is a marquee event, but it’s played about 120 miles from Los Angeles.

“One of the reasons we chose L.A. is that L.A. doesn’t have a professional event for such a long time and it’s such an incredible city, a huge city with a great tennis culture, and we thought it was missing,” Mouratoglou said. “I think it’s very important for the young generation to watch tennis live. It’s a big inspiration. It’s one thing to watch behind a screen. It’s another to live the experience, the show, live.”

Fritz agreed. “I”m hoping it’s not a one-off for tennis in L.A.,” he said. “I’m excited that hopefully it does really well and gets people excited.”

UTS plans three more events in this year’s series. One will be in Frankfurt, Germany; Mouratoglou said he’s finalizing details for events in Asia and a grand finale in the Middle East. How things unfold in Carson this weekend will influence the rest of the series because this will be the first test of his fan engagement ideas in front of large audiences.

Ticket sales and media exposure won’t be the only factors when Mouratoglou evaluates the format’s success this weekend. In plotting the series’ course, he will consider fans’ reactions and comments from players.

“If the atmosphere is really heated and people are happy, excited, even if it’s too much, I prefer too much over not enough. In the future we’ll be able to manage that,” Mouratoglou said. “I hope players’ feedback will be that they say, ‘That was crazy, and I want to come back.’ ”

Rune Prepares For 'Very Challenging' And 'Super Intense' First Leg Of 2024 UTS Tour

by Nurein Ahmed

09/02/2024 18:00

Holger Rune is readying himself for a "super intense" weekend in Oslo, where the first leg of the 2024 Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) will take place.

The event will be held at the Telenor Arena from February 9th to 11th. Despite an injury scare that forced him to retire in his most recent tournament in Montpellier, Rune has declared himself fit to play the UTS Tour of Oslo.

The Danish star has been in the headlines this week after making a series of changes in his coaching and business team. The decisions have certainly caused a shock within the tennis world.

Rune ended coaching partnerships with both Severin Luthi and Boris Becker less than two months after hiring them. He also signed a deal with IMG, who will take charge of his off-court brand, with mother Aneke stepping down from her role as press manager .

Rune Breaks Silence On Becker Departure And Explains His Frequent Coaching Splits

Rune Breaks Silence On Becker Departure And Explains His Frequent Coaching Splits

However, the 20-year-old is not indulging himself in the outside noise and is currently preparing to play the UTS Tour this weekend. Rune got his first taste of the event at last year's Grand Final in London, where he received a wild card.

Rune scored a pair of wins in the group stage and defeated Andrey Rublev in the semifinal. He met British lefty Jack Draper, who was also a debutant, in the final and lost in four quarters .

Because of its unique scoring format, which has been carefully designed to cut down on stoppages, Rune told Tennis Majors that the UTS Tour is "very challenging" but at the same time "entertaining" for the fans.

"It’s very challenging. It’s super intense. But I think it’s great because it’s always mostly long rallies, and I think it’s very entertaining for the crowd. There’s not so much waiting."

The first batch of matches will take place on Friday. There will be two groups, each containing four ATP players. Rune, dubbed as "The Viking", is in Group A, along with home crowd favorite Casper Ruud, Alexander Bublik and Dominic Thiem.

He opens up against former US Open champion Thiem on Friday, but the most-talked-about match is his duel against Ruud, which is scheduled on the same day. Rune is unlikely to get much crowd support, but he hopes to quieten the crowd with his performance.

"I hope they’re going to be loud. I’m expecting them not to be as loud, but let’s see. You know, we both you know, almost in the top 10, and you know, it’s probably going to be a very exciting match for the public also to watch. So just looking forward for it has to see where my level is at."

  • Author: Madison Williams

At 21 years old, Ben Shelton is already adding another accomplishment to his resume by becoming the highest-ranked American male tennis player at No. 14 in this week's ATP rankings.

This is also the highest ranking of Shelton's young career. He began the 2023 season at No. 96 in the world, but his achievements over the past year helped propel him to the top 15 in the world.

Shelton surpassed Taylor Fritz for the top American ranking, who now sits at No. 15. Fritz held the title for over a year .

Another accomplishment for the World No. 14 👏 pic.twitter.com/rohTGuqY8d — USTA (@usta) April 15, 2024

The Atlanta native most recently played at the ATP Houston tournament, winning the title over fellow American, Frances Tiafoe. This was just the second title won in Shelton's career.

Last year was the breakout season for Shelton , especially after he faced World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the U.S. Open semifinals. He beat Tiafoe and another American Tommy Paul on his run to the semifinals. Before that, he lost to Paul in the Australian Open quarterfinals in Jan. 2023.

2024 Masters prize money, purse: Payouts, winnings for Scottie Scheffler, each golfer from $20 million pool

More than history and a green jacket were on the line at augusta national on sunday.

tennis uts tour

Plenty of green was up for grabs at the 2024 Masters on Sunday -- not only in the form of the famed jacket awarded to the winner of this year's tournament but also in regards to the prize money being paid out from a record-setting pool. Augusta National Golf Club announced that the 2024 Masters would have a total purse of $20 million, marking a new tournament high by $2 million and the largest payout awarded to players at one of the nation's most pristine venues.

Scottie Scheffler was the greatest beneficiary of that increased purse, capturing the $3.6 million winner's share by capturing his second Masters championship in three years . Finishing 11 under with a 4-under 68 capping a tremendous tournament, Scheffler became the fourth-youngest golfer to win two green jackets and the 10th to win two in a three-year span. The $3.6 million prize is $360,000 more than 2023 champion Jon Rahm earned a year ago.

Runner-up Ludvig Åberg achieved quite a payday in his first career major championship. Pressing Scheffler down the stretch, the young Swede scored $2.16 million for second place, a larger sum than either Danny Willett (2016) or Jordan Spieth (2015) earned for winning the green jacket.

Scheffler and Åberg were not the only players set to receive significant green by week's end. In fact, the top three were set to receive seven-figure paydays, except Collin Morikawa struggled down the stretch and entered into a three-way tie with Max Homa and Tommy Fleetwood. Morikawa lost $320,000 by bogeying the last, though he increased the take-home of Homa and Fleetwood with the trio each taking home $1.04 million. This marked the first time that the Masters had five players bring home $1 million or more.

Those among the top 11 were set to see at least $500,000 deposited into their bank accounts, and the handsome payouts trickled down the leaderboard with every golfer inside the top 36 leaving Augusta National with six figures.

Big names on display at UTS Grand Final as Rublev, Draper headline in London

Ahead of the UTS Grand Final in London, we look at the big storylines heading into the year-end event and preview the details you need to know

Players with trophy UTS London - Tennis Majors / UTS

While the ATP and WTA Tours may well be concluded for the year, there’s still plenty of tennis action to come this weekend, as the UTS Grand Final takes place in London from 15-17 December.

Eight of the best players on the UTS Tour this year will be fighting it out for the year-end prize at the ExCel London, with two current and three former top 10 players in the mix this weekend.

In a format that is known for being innovative, fast-paced and engaging, there’s plenty to look forward to at the UTS Grand Final.

Practices has started. The players are in London 👀 See you on Friday at @ExCeLLondon for #UTSGrandFinal 🔥 🎟️ Last tickets: https://t.co/wtfO8zRUL2 🌍 UTS Broadcasters on https://t.co/tPhfpoLTco pic.twitter.com/GJxuqR8V09 — UTS Tour – London (Dec15-17) (@uts_tour_) December 13, 2023

Rublev the man to beat in London

Heading into day one of the UTS Grand Final, it’s undeniable that Andrey “Rublo” Rublev will be the man to beat.

Not only is the Russian the highest ranked player in the field, but he’s also the only man present to have won a title this year, most recently claiming the UTS Frankfurt by Builder.ai trophy in September.

Rublev currently sits at No 5 in the ATP Tour, and has had the best year of his career, winning a maiden Masters 1000 crown in Monte Carlo, picking up an ATP 250 title in Bastad and making another three Grand Slam quarter-finals.

At UTS Frankfurt by Builder.ai, Rublev dropped his opening match to Diego “El Peque” Schwartzman , before navigating the rest of the tournament undefeated to claim the title.

This weekend, Rublev has been drawn alongside Schwartzman in Group A, along with Casper “The Iceman” Ruud and Benoit “The Rebel” Paire , setting a mouth-watering rematch of their Frankfurt clash. Group B, meanwhile, sees Holger “The Viking” Rune , Alexander “The Bublik Enemy” Bublik , Jack “The Power” Draper and Gael “La Monf” Monfils grouped together.

Can Draper live up to hometown expectations?

Jack Draper has had yet another disjointed season, suffering several injury layoffs throughout 2023.

Despite this disappointment, the 21-year-old has an opportunity to close out the year on a high, playing in his debut UTS tournament in front of a home London crowd.

“I’m very grateful to be here, very grateful and thankful to be getting the opportunity to play in London,” Draper said on Thursday. “I think it’s an amazing concept, the event is really fun. To play here and be amongst amazing players and play in front of my home crowd, I’m very, very excited.”

Jack Draper getting in the mood for @uts_tour_ pic.twitter.com/an9K13mtaW — Tennis365 (@tennis365com) December 14, 2023

While Rublev has an obvious target on his back due to his ranking, there are others who will be equally excited to take on Draper in front of his home crowd.

“It’s always exciting to play a home player, a home favourite,” declared Rune ahead of day one of UTS London. “It’s going to be a different kind of atmosphere than normal. But we’re more and more used to it, so it’s hopefully going to be great, a lot of people, a lot of support, so I’m excited for it.”

The clash between Rune and Draper is one that many are looking forward to , with the young stars facing each other at 9pm on Friday night.

Action for all at UTS London

UTS has many selling points–music during the points, crowds free to shout and move around, interviews with players during the matches–but a big draw card for fans is the fact that anyone attending or watching a UTS event will be guaranteed to see their favourite player.

All players will play at least once per day across the first two days, with six matches scheduled for Friday and Saturday, before the semi-finals and final unfold on Sunday.

Here is the full line-up for UTS London (December 15 to 17) 😍 Come to see them play at ExCel London!! 🔥 #uts #utslondon #utstour #tennis #tennislove pic.twitter.com/i6oeJoETYM — UTS Tour – London (Dec15-17) (@uts_tour_) November 27, 2023
