Why don’t you pay us a visit when you come to Delhi the next time. Or Why don’t you make us a visit when you come to Delhi the next time? What should be used? I am asking someone to visit me when they are in Delhi the next time Thank you .

"Pay us a visit" sounds normal, Abcd. I don't know why or when people began to use "pay" with "visit", but that combination is now customary.

lingobingo

To pay [someone] a visit is a standard phrase. To make someone a visit is not – it does not make sense. The way you’ve used visit (as a verb) in your explanation is fine: Why don’t you visit us?

Pay us a visit was an example in Cambridge dictionary. It was Why don't you pay us a visit next time when you are in town?

I'm not sure I agree with that. I made a visit to Tuscany last year. I think when you use paid it has to be referring to a person or a group of people. "Made" seems suitable for a reference to a geographic area.

“Payed” Or “Paid”: What’s The Difference?

  • When To Use Payed Or Paid
  • Similar Verbs
  • Take The Quiz

If you paid attention during your English classes, you know that the past tense and past participle of the verb pay is paid . Right? Actually, it turns out that payed is, in fact, the correct past tense and past participle form of pay in a few rare cases.

In this article, we’ll cover why and when the verb pay takes different forms, explain how the words paid and payed are typically used, and provide some example sentences that show how paid and payed appear in sentences.

⚡ Quick summary

For most of the multiple meanings of the verb pay —including those involving literal and figurative payment—the past tense and participle form is paid (making it an irregular verb when used in these ways). However, the form payed is used as the past tense and past participle form of pay in rare nautical senses, and sometimes in the past tense form of the phrase pay out when referring to releasing rope (though paid out is also used).

When to use payed or paid

The verb pay has multiple meanings. Its most common meanings relate to giving something as part of a financial transaction or obligation. You can pay when buying something, but you can also pay attention, pay a compliment, pay respects, pay a visit, and the list goes on.

In almost all cases, the past tense and past participle of pay is paid . When used in this way, pay is considered an irregular verb because it doesn’t use the ending -ed like regular verbs do.

However, the word payed is used as the past tense and past participle of pay in two very specific nautical senses.

The first means “to cover parts of a ship with pitch, tar, or similar coating.” The second means “to move a ship toward the direction of the blowing wind.”

In addition to these rarely used nautical senses, the form payed is also sometimes used to form the past tense of the phrasal verb pay out , which means “to gradually let out a rope.”

It should be noted paid out is also often used in this case (and considered acceptable by most grammar sources).

Verbs similar to pay

There are two irregular verbs that follow the same pattern as pay . The verb lay uses laid as its past tense and past participle forms (at one time, the form layed was used, but this is now considered obsolete). The verb say becomes said (never “sayed”) in both the past tense and past participle forms. At one time, the verb stay used the form staid as its past tense and past participle, but in modern usage it is a regular verb that uses stayed for both forms.

In contrast, other verbs that end in -lay are regular verbs, meaning their past tense and past participle forms end in -ed and not -aid . For example, the verbs play , stray , allay , and relay become played , strayed , allayed , and relayed (and never “plaid,” “straid,” “allaid,” or “relaid”).

'That's the Lord's chicken.' Trump visits Atlanta Chick-fil-A before fundraiser

The Chick-fil-A off of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Atlanta is used to dealing with the morning rush as one of the busier franchises in the area. But this morning was a little different.“Get ready for some milkshakes,” former President Donald Trump told Chick-fil-A staff on Wednesday, surprising customers with a drop-in while on the way to a fundraising luncheon in the city.

The interaction, which quickly went viral across social media, showed Trump buying 30 milkshakes and “some chicken” for customers and supporters.

One moment at the fast-food restaurant has caught special attention among conservatives on X , formerly Twitter: Some banter between a Trump and a supporter. Pundits thought the woman, who is Black, was referencing her race as she encouraged the former president, “I don’t care what the media tells you, Mr. Trump, we support you!”

Chick-fil-A visit marks Trump's second in Georgia this year

Today’s visit marks the second time Trump has come to Georgia in a little over a month, showing that the state will once again be an important battleground in the 2024 presidential election.

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution , the fundraiser cost $6,600 to attend, with an additional $25,000 fee per couple for a photo opportunity with the 45th president. Those expected to be in attendance included former U.S. Senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler, as well as prominent figures of the Georgia business sector, including Bernie Marcus of Home Depot and poultry industry billionaire Tommy Bagwell.

In all, the fundraiser was expected to rake in more than $5 million for the embattled candidate, who currently owes nearly $470 million for his various legal troubles , including cases over hush money and election fraud.

But at his stop before the fundraiser, the former president appeared more interested in the chicken he was about to be served. “That’s the Lord’s chicken,” Trump quipped.

John Calipari steps down at Kentucky to become Arkansas head basketball coach

Image: John Calipari

Hall of Fame men’s college basketball coach John Calipari said Tuesday he is stepping down at Kentucky and has been announced as the new head coach for the University of Arkansas.

In his 15 seasons with the University of Kentucky, Calipari's led the Wildcats to seven Elite Eights, four Final Fours and the 2012 national championship.

"This is a dream job. It was my dream job. Anybody in our profession looks at the University of Kentucky in basketball and says it’s the bluest of blue," Calipari said Tuesday on social media. "The last few weeks, we've come to realize that this program probably needs to hear another voice.”

Calipari, 65, is 410-123 in Lexington. He was under contract through the 2028-29 season but will not owe the program a buyout for leaving early. He would have been owed $33 million if he had been fired by the university.

A three-time Naismith College Coach of the Year, Calipari has come under scrutiny in recent years. Kentucky lost to No. 14 seed Oakland in the first round in this year's NCAA Tournament and has failed to reach the postseason’s second weekend since 2019. The Wildcats’ last SEC title was in 2020.

Kentucky athletics director Mitch Barnhart said the program is "appreciative of John Calipari leading our program for the last 15 years, adding to the legacy of championship success at Kentucky. We’re grateful to John for his many contributions to the University, and our state, both on and off the court.

"We are working diligently to hire a proven, highly dedicated coach who embraces the importance of this program to our fans and the state of Kentucky."

Calipari was announced as the new Arkansas head coach on Wednesday, after Eric Musselman left the position for the same role at Southern California last week.

Kentucky boasts the No. 2 recruiting class in the 2024 class, according to 247Sports. It is unclear whether those players will stay with the Wildcats following Calipari’s departure.

With the date set, Packers season will begin in 149 days.

The Packers will get to keep their full complement of nine home games for this season.

“We’re looking forward to being a part of this historic matchup against the Eagles in São Paulo,” Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy said. “We're excited to play in front of our devoted fans in Brazil and help build upon the international popularity of the NFL and the Packers. We had a great experience playing internationally for the first time a couple of years ago and we're proud to be part of the league's continued global growth.”

The Packers and Cleveland Browns were the finalists to play the Eagles in the game. Before the annual Tailgate Tour rolled out of Lambeau Field on Tuesday morning, he seemed to indicate that Green Bay would be the choice.

“We’re either the first- or second-most popular team in Brazil. Apparently, they like green and gold,” Murphy said with a laugh. “I think New England might be ahead of us because of Tom Brady and Gisele but I think that’s a few years [ago]. I think we’re very popular there. As we talked about, we’re kind of the people’s team. People really like the idea of a community-owned team, with our history and tradition.”

The Packers were the last team to play an international game – they lost to the Giants in London in 2022 – but are the first to play in South America.

“This is very important for the league,” Murphy said. “The Packers are very popular in Brazil. If we’re chosen, we’ll gladly go.”

The game will be played at Corinthians Arena, which seated more than 63,000 fans for a World Cup soccer match in 2014.

The game will match Packers quarterback Jordan Love against Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. In a 2022 game in Philadelphia that was won by the Eagles, Love replaced an injured Aaron Rodgers and led the team to 10 points in two possessions. That game helped solidify the decision to trade Rodgers and move forward with Love.

In Philly’s 40-33 win, the Eagles rushed for an appalling 363 yards against the downtrodden Packers. Hurts threw for 153 yards but ran for 157. Love was 6-of-9 for 113 yards and one touchdown off the bench.

Of note: Peacock will exclusively stream the game. The game also will be available via an over-the-air broadcast for fans living in the teams’ local markets as well as NFL+.
