  • calremmel 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amit and Neelam were superlative hosts We spent a wonderful lunch with Amit, Neelam, and their son, eating some of the very best food during our entire visit to India, and getting to see it made by a gifted chef in a well-organized kitchen. Neelam is a brilliant cook, and was very generous in sharing what she knows. We learned to make fried bread from scratch using semolina flour and spices, and were walked through making a dish with potatoes, rich spices, and tomato puree. This description hardly does the meal justice. The three courses were incredibly delicious, from the stuffed rice flour dumplings, to the rich pumpkin curry, to the decadent hawla and other desserts - I personally overindulged, but how could one not? The food aside, Amit and Neelam are good people with a beautiful family and home, and it was a privilege to spend time with them. I cannot recommend the experience enough. How lucky us visitors to India are that they have decided to take part in this. Read more Written 3 February 2020
  • SanjeevV128 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Communal eating par excellence I absolutely love the idea of dining at people's homes. You get authentic, home-cooked food, and discover more about people, traditions, cooking and eating styles. So much better than eating out at a restaurant. The meal with Radhikaa was splendid. It had all the qualities that I described in my opening lines. She talked at length about the Somavanshi Kshatriya Pathare (SKP) community, the aborigines of Bombay city, and their customs and traditions. I knew absolutely nothing about them before I entered Radhikaa's residence. By the end of the evening I attained enlightenment. And the food. Special and lip-smacking. The Mutton Curry cooked in the traditional style was spectacularly good. I couldn't have enough of it. So too the Dal which was so completely different from the dal we (and I am from Lucknow) cook at home. Dal is a staple for me and this Masala Dal, SKP style, tangy and thin, was an absolute treat. Then the Ukkad Roti made of rice flour and the melt-in-the-mouth Keema Cutlet. The piece de resistance was the Carrot Kheer. Just shredded carrot, cashews and milk in a delectable concoction. I wish people would dine out like this. I can't think of a more engaging way to discover a cuisine and get to know people. Cancel your booking at the coffee shop nearby and make a booking instead with Authenticook. No, I haven't been paid by Aneesh and his colleagues to go into raptures like this; I have long been a proponent of communal dining. It is a many-splendoured experience. Thank you, Radhikaa. I will be back. Read more Written 28 January 2020

Farm tourism: A way of life in Kerala

 alt=

Many tourists long to be away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Amid the tranquil surroundings of a farm lies the secret to happiness and peace sought after by visitors. Most foreigners come to Kerala seeking solace in terms of its unique flora and fauna. In addition to this, yoga, Ayurveda, and numerous rejuvenation therapies such as Kalari medicine add to the opportunities that an entrepreneur can make use of to earn a decent income. All these forms can be combined with farm tourism.

Many homestay operators have already added farm tourism to their itinerary even though not on a scientific basis. It is here that the Government of Kerala has to step in to add benchmarks to farm tourism in terms of training and authorization. The government organizations like KITTS with over 30 years of experience in tourism training is ideally poised to address these requirements.

Farm tourism usually involves- accommodation, farm visits, farm shop visits, guided walks, and farm activities. The use of indigenous methods and organic farming is widely accepted and is popular among tourists. Many destinations like Kanthalloor located near Munnar has gone a long way in developing farm tourism. Nelliyampathy, the beautiful hill destination of Palakkad is another shining example where farm tourism has been successfully applied.

Requirements to start a farm tourism endeavour

palakkad farm tourism

An individual or a group wishing to start a farm tourism endeavour should be in possession of at least 10 acres of plantation at or near a tourist centre or along an established tourist circuit or major transport corridor. Another option is to be part of Green Farms Kerala.

The farm also needs a sufficient parking area, well-developed entry area, ticket counter, guardroom, gate, name boards, etc, fully covered compound wall at entry area, stalls or shopping area outside or inside the farm, restaurants/coffee shop/snack bar, walkways, signage, etc. within the farm, toilet facilities inside and outside the farm and brochures.

Packages and tours that can be offered

palakkad farm tourism

Depending on the strengths of the destination, packages can be designed. The following options can be considered depending on the availability of resources- trekking, boating, and fishing. Some homestay owners help visitors cook food using traditional methods. In addition to this, interaction with domestic animals such as cows, goats, and sheep are other ways of experiencing village life. In addition to this, ethnic art forms and cultural shows are arranged by enterprising entrepreneurs. Birding is another major form of tourism activity that is gaining popularity in Kerala.

Marayoor, a scenic village located near Munnar is a classic example where village life experiences have been converted in packages. The traditional recipes made by the local community are a great hit among tourists. Trained by the Kerala Institute of Tourism and Travel Studies (KITTS), Women self-help groups formed after attending the skill development programme conducted by the institute have started making livelihood. This not only sustains their family but a community as a whole in Marayoor. Farm tourism is also linked to these activities in addition to protecting house sparrows through the hugely successful Back to Nest initiative.

Scope of farm tourism in Kerala

palakkad farm tourism

Agriculture is a way of life in Kerala from time immemorial. Even in this cyber age, a large number of youngsters not to speak of the traditional farmers have embraced farming not only for a living but as a passion. In districts like Wayanad, Idukki, Palakkad, Pathanamthitta, and Kottayam, the farming community occupies a unique place in society. Kuttanad, the rice bowl of Kerala in spite of the repeated floods with constant support from the government is a shining example of the farming culture of Kerala.

Many tourism destinations in Kerala are intrinsically linked to the unique crops grown in there. A classic example is Munnar where tea plantations on the slopes of its rolling hills are its Unique Selling Proposition (USP). Similar is the case of Wayanad where spices and the unique produce from the bamboo rule the roost. If the uniqueness of a particular destination is linked to farm tourism without disturbing nature’s balance, this will be beneficial to the local community and the state as a whole in terms of livelihood and income.

Farm Tourism

Kerala, the land of a plethora of natural bounties is ideally poised to become a farm tourism destination. Much needs to be done in terms of setting up standards for this endeavour. Even though many farm tourism entrepreneurs have set up farms in the State, it needs to be standardized. Once a system is in place, the scope is immense for developing farm tourism in other districts other than those mentioned. For example, even though Thiruvananthapuram does not figure among the destinations mentioned in this article it is very much an agriculture-oriented district. In similar lines other destinations can be brought into the farm tourism map for the future. Implementation of farm tourism with a futuristic view keeping in mind its impact on the economy and society will pave way for better tomorrow.

Palakkad

Famously known as the Tipu Fort, Palakkad Fort, is situated right in the centre of Palakkad and is considered one of most well-preserved tourist sites in Kerala. Tucked away in the foothills of the majestic Sahayadri mountain range, the fort is a classical beauty situated among dense green forests and serpentine, cascading rivers cutting among the woods. Having served as a military base in the past, the fort is now under the protection of Archaeological Survey of India. It was built by Hyder Ali of Mysore in 1766 and later taken over and modified by the British in 1790. It is named after Hyder Ali’s son, the infamous Tipu Sultan. The fort holds a special place in the hearts of history aficionados and cultural buffs because of its importance in the history of the subcontinent and the struggle for India’s independence.Spread over a massive 60,702 square meters, the grounds are an awe-inspiring sight to behold. The fort is also famous among architecture students because of its unique amalgamation of French craftsmanship and traditional Indian style. The grounds of the fort served as a stable of horses and elephants of Tipu Sultan’s army in the bygone days and is now known as Kota Maidanam. Nowadays, it hosts public events like cricket matches, exhibitions, and gatherings. The huge grounds are an attractive spot for a picnic and taking strolls in the area. The grounds also host a museum of Archaeology which is a tourist hotbed and attracts hundreds of visitors every year. The museum showcases beautiful photographs of the fort in the before and after fashion. A must visit place for anyone who is interested in architecture, history, and restoration of old buildings. The fort is surrounded by a beautiful moat that adds to the mystical quality of the place. Earlier, a drawbridge connected the fort to main grounds, but it has now been replaced by a permanent bridge. The fort opens at 8:00 AM and closes at 6:00 PM like on the rest of the days of the week. What is the history of Palakkad fort?Palakkad Fort was built in 1766 AD. Very little facts are known about the early few years of the construction process. It is assumed it was constructed by the local king, Paliyath Achchan, who only became an independent monarch late in the 18th century. When he asked Hyder Ali to help him against an invasion, the latter took the opportunity to take possession of the Palakkad fort and the fort stayed under the rule of Mysore Sultans after that until 1790. That was when it was captured by Colonel Stuart, long after several backs and forth battles over the fort between the British and the Sultans. Under the British rule, the fort was renovated and used as an operation base till the mid 19th century. Later, it was converted into a Tehsil. The fort was forgotten until 2004 when the Archaeological Survey of India took it under its wing. The war memorial was a falling, dilapidated, damaged building when the ASI took over. It has undergone quite a mesmerizing journey of renovation under the same, and you can enjoy the history of the fort in the museum located within the grounds. History aficionados will find the rich history and diverse stories a captivating way of spending an afternoon in the museum. What are the main attractions in Palakkad fort?Surrounded by acres of paddy fields, and encircled by majestic mountains – the Palakkad Fort is truly a visual treat in itself for tourists all over. The fort also features Kota Maidanam – a place where cricket matches and public gatherings are held every year that attract locals and tourists alike. The museum housing various photographs of the place during its renovation stages holds a special place in the hearts of history lovers. The captivating French architecture with gracefully designed interiors is another huge selling point among architecture students. There is the Anjaneya temple inside that is also a much-visited site among tourists. Is photography allowed in Palakkad fort?It would be a shame not to capture the exquisite amalgamation of architectural intricacies of the Palakkad fort paired with sheer natural splendour scattered around with a camera. Capture truly dazzling shots with your camera at a small cost of INR 20 per person. Or if you want to make video montages of the picturesque vistas, you can carry a video camera by paying INR 50 only. What are the places to eat near Palakkad fort?Exhausted by walking around all day and want to grab a bite before you continue exploring the gorgeous grounds of the fort? Pristine dense forests, lush paddy fields, gushing waterfalls and rich history come together to make Palakkad, lying at the foot of the Western Ghats in Kerala, a fascinating tourist destination. Popularly known as the granary of Kerala, this fertile stretch of land is where several legendary battles were fought against the British regime and where nature is at its bountiful best. The dense forests of Palakkad shelter gorgeous species of flora and fauna and just cruising through the various reserves, national parks and bird sanctuaries is an experience not easily forgotten.

From the mesmerising Mayiladumpara Peacock Sanctuary, where you are likely to find one or more peacocks dancing in their glorious splendour, to the Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary, where tigers prowling to water holes is a common sight, Palakkad lets you observe nature at close quarters. The place derives its name from the Malayalam words pala (a kind of tree) and kadu (forest), and history says it was once a spectacular forest covered with the sweet-scented flowers of the pala tree.

Palakkad has a rich history. According to William Logan, the author of the Malabar Manual, the Pallava dynasty of Kanchi (275 CE- 897 CE) might have invaded Malabar in the 2nd or 3rd century AD. One of their headquarters was a place called ‘Palakada’, which could be the present-day Palakkad. In 1757, the Zamorin of Calicut invaded Palakkad and the Raja of Palakkad sought the help of Hyder Ali of Mysore. After Hyder Ali helped the raja win, the land of Palakkad passed into the hands of the rulers of Mysore, Ali and his son Tipu Sultan. This history lives on in the Palakkad Fort, which has witnessed several battled between the Mysore kings and the British.

A 40-km break in the mountains, known as the Palakkad Gap, gives access to Palakkad. It is through this pass that many settlers came to the land and the spice trade flourished. This multicultural influence is evident in its temples and palaces. Even today, Palakkad is a potpourri of various cultures, and some of the finest Carnatic musicians hail from this region.

Destinations

About us / who we are.

The 'God's Own Country', Kerala is a destination ideally created for Farm Tourism. Being an agricultural state, Kerala has many opportunities to explore farm tourism. Nothing has to be created here. Naturally they exist and naturally they can be promoted. Some of the places which boast for farm and plantation tourism are:

Farm tourism and spice tourism goes well at Idukki. Said to be an integral part of ecotourism,Farm tourism is seen to be more in Kumily in Idukki. Farm tourism here is helping the farmers to increase their income by promoting tourism activities. They can also market their products through farm tourism.

Usually tourists are more interested on organic farming, where one can get fresh vegetables and other products. Everything will be natural, that means chemicals will not be used at all. Visiting farms and buying products are some other activities, which is common here. That seems to be a pleasant experience.

Idukki is famous for spices like pepper and cardamom. Rubber, coffee and coconut are other important crops. Along with these products, vegetables also play an important role in developing farm tourism in Idukki.

Wayanad is a high altitude district, which is favourable for the cultivation for plantation crops and spices. The major crops at Wayanad are coffee, tea, cardamom and rubber. Interestingly here one can see coffee based farming system. Coconut and ginger cultivations are also common here. As per reports, paddy field is around 22,772 hectares.

Wayanad is famous for organic farming. Wayanad always attracts the tourists to its beautiful farms which is free from all types of chemicals. This is to maintain the untouched nature here. The crops include arecanut, pepper, vegetables, tuber crops, drumstick, papaya etc. Tourists also get a chance to buy organic products from Wayanad. They also have different opportunities like:

  • A stay in a farm
  • To take part in plantations
  • A tour to these plantations
  • Feeding of farm animals

Agriculture is considered to be the main occupation of people in Palakkad. Said to be the 'Granary of Kerala', Paddy, Coconut, Rubber, Pulses, Areca nut, Tapioca, Ginger, Groundnut, Sugarcane, Cotton etc are cultivated here. There are lots of agricultural farms in Palakkad, which are initiating the production of agricultural products in this district. They are:

  • Horticultural Development Farm in Malampuzha
  • Orange and Vegetable farm, Nelliampathy
  • Integrated Seed Development farm, Erthempathy
  • Central Orchard, Pattambi
  • State Seed Farms in Aalathur, Kunathur, Kongad, Ananganadi and Muthalamada

Palakkad is famous for the unique 'Navara grain'. The famous 'Navara Organic Eco Farm' is placed near Chittur. The 18 acres land in Palakkad is a bast spot for farm tourism. Apart from 'Navara grains', one can also find here other crops like mango, pomegranate, medical herbs and bamboo. It is family run farm, more than hundred years of old. Around 8 visitors can visit this farm at a time. Also enjoy tasty dishes from here.

One of the specialty of Kuttanad is that here we can see farming below sea level. The land is cultivated twice in a year. The harvest season of Kuttanad is filled with fun and celebration. It is one of the few places which is still following traditional system for agriculture practices. They still use traditional water wheel and box made of wood.

In order to promote agriculture in 'Kuttanad', the government has initiated an integrated farming system. This includes revival of farming, ecological rehabilitation and enhancement of the livelihood. Keralites should be proud that in 2013, the United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has granted heritage status for the farming system in Kuttanad. Kuttanad also holds a tag on Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System.

This rich agriculture background of 'Kuttanad' is always attracting tourists to this beautiful place. This also directly and indirectly promotes farm tourism here. Government is also taking major steps to promote 'farm tourism' in Kuttanad.

Pathanamthitta

With all these resources available, Pathanamthitta is one of the major farm tourism destination in Kerala. The land here is divided into three – lowland, midland and highland. Coming to the scope of 'farm tourism', Pathanamthitta consist of three seed farms which consist of vegetable seeds, paddy seeds etc. You can also find here a collection of livestock like ducks, buffaloes, cows, sheeps, fowls, pigs and goats.

The two fish breeding centres of Pathanamthitta is also a place promoting farm tourism. The farmers use to buy fingerlings of labeo, catla, mrigal, rohu and cyprimes from here, thus promoting Aqua Tourism too.

Kottayam is one of the well known commercial centre in Kerala state. Kottayam is also famous for its plantation estates based on rubber plantation. This mountainous district of Kerala is abundant with natural rubber, which makes it one of the wanted destinations for Farm Tourism.

Mango Village Resort, Palakkad

Welcome to MANGO VILLAGE - Indulge in a Malayali Family's Hospitality!

Family stay at palakkad

Spread across 45-plus acres, tucked away on the fringes of a tiny hamlet and yet only a few kilometers off the main road, the Mango Village is blessed with richly fertile, alluvial soil and a year-round salubrious climate There is a well-maintained mango orchard with over 15 varieties of the luscious fruit, an organic vegetable garden shaded by tall, swaying betel and coconut palms, medicinal herbs, spice plants, and livestock including the emu, the second-largest living bird by height, complete with a colorfully painted Kalavandi (traditional bullock cart) perfect for joy rides! The environment here is sublime, exuding the quaintness and tranquility of a laid-back village in rural Kerala, far removed from the cacophony of urban living. The towering peaks seem close enough to touch and the magnificence of Mother Nature in all her magical splendor is truly awe-inspiring. The Mango Village is an eco-tourism destination, and is open to walk-in guests who want to experience the ambiance of a real functional farm in all its natural ethnicity in a naturally rural and village setting. Vijeesh, Kavitha and their sons Srihari and Srinath together manage the Mango Village and their guesthouses, serving as the primary hosts. They love sharing their everyday life in tandem with Mother Nature and take immense pride and joy in personally welcoming their guests with warmth and graciousness while going the extra mile to wait on them hand and foot in ensuring their absolute satisfaction at all times unlike large commercial enterprises catering to a touristy clientele.

My father Vijayan and my mother Shantha bought this land in the early 1980s (about 35 years ago) while my younger brother and I were toddlers. We used to live at our ancestral home in Kollengode Village a few kilometers away but our parents used to come here and toil everyday on these 45 acres, which was then almost like a small forest with wild fowl and foxes. We used to join them on weekends and during school holidays and help them in vegetating the land with seasonal cash crops and in systematically planting mango trees, coconut and betel palm, pepper vines, ginger, turmeric and other medicinal herbs. My parents retired and few years back and are now living with my brother, a businessman, at our house in Kollengode. I moved here with my wife and the boys after building the farmhouse, which Kavitha and I built with money earned off the produce of this land. Once we started living here full-time, we were able to employ permanent workers to help us expand our operations here to include livestock, build up our own nursery and plant some of the choicest varieties of mango including the more well-liked varieties such as Alphonso; Sindooram; Banganapilly; Neelam; Himapasand; Thotha Puri; Malgova, Gudhadath; and Kalapadi among others. Mango tree production depends on flowering, which is often the first indicator of the yield for the coming season. Flowering starts in December-January and lasts till February to the beginning of March. It can be distorted by sudden rains or heat waves during this period. Not all trees will flower equally in one orchard especially for varieties like Alphonso. A mango tree can produce from 20 kg up to 200 kilograms per harvest season. Mango yield is thus difficult to forecast, as it also varies a lot across years. Over the years we used to get many visitors to our orchard, especially during the summer months when the mangoes ripen. This prompted us to set up traditional cottages on the property to have guests experience rural village life and see first-hand how a farm is run. We christened it the "Mango Village," as mangoes are our single largest cash crop. The rest as they say is history. We are proud to say that our clientele has grown from just families from the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu to include visitors from the rest of India, Europe and the Americas who stay with us to enjoy unadulterated living close to Mother Nature and to relish our cuisine and way of life as part of our family. Today, Mango Village is more than just another mango orchard for deliciously succulent mangoes nurtured with care and served with love. It is a destination in itself and reflects our inherent family values, which we hope and pray will be imbibed by our boys and the tradition continued over generations to come.
