PGA Tour 2K23 Review - Links To The Future

  • First Released Oct 11, 2022 released

PGA 2K23 vastly improves on an already great foundation with refined golf gameplay, customization, and an expansive suite of modes.

By Steven Petite on October 13, 2022 at 4:10PM PDT

From a pure golfing perspective, PGA Tour 2K23 is the best simulation golf game ever made. With realistic ball physics, precise shot-shaping, and an emphasis on rhythm and swing path, 2K23 delivers on the many idiosyncrasies of the beautiful game that is golf. Combine the refined golfing mechanics with deeper levels of customization, and I can safely say that PGA Tour 2K23 is a meaningful upgrade over its predecessor. And hey, it also marks the return of Tiger Woods to the virtual links, which is a big deal for those who grew up playing Tiger Woods golf games.

PGA Tour 2K23 is the first new entry in the series in two years. That's unusual for sports games, as most have annual entries. After spending more than a dozen hours with 2K23, I'm starting to feel like this release model--where developers have more time to make improvements--would go a long way toward fixing many of the issues that plague long-running sports series. It doesn't offer minor, iterative changes. Instead, PGA 2K23 is a marked improvement on its predecessor–a rarity in the sports sim genre.

The PGA 2K series--previously called The Golf Club before 2K acquired HB Studios--has always done a remarkable job with swing mechanics. Emphasizing timing and rhythm more than popular golf games of yesteryear, the series makes each swing feel critical--just like the real sport. PGA Tour 2K23 follows that tradition and improves on it with a couple of new core features: a revamped swing meter and a three-click swing system.

The swing meter for analog controls has moved from below to next to your golfer. It's shaped like an arc that mimics the swing plane. Though largely a presentational difference at first glance, it's actually pretty clever. By redesigning the meter, it's far easier to observe the path of the club during your backswing and stop it in the sweet spot. In turn, this helped create a smoother swing and allowed me to really get to know the swing path of my created golfer as well as the playable pros in the game. It's also slyly teaching you how to achieve perfect timing without the meter. For dedicated players, the best results come from "feel." Some competitive online tournaments in previous entries have banned the meter altogether, so now it's easier to make that transition to playing from muscle memory instead of the swing aide.

Though the analog stick controls are still the way to go for an authentic experience, HB Studios added an innovative three-click system. This type of shot mechanic has been featured in many golf games, including old EA Sports Tiger Woods titles, Mario Golf, and Everybody's Golf (Hot Shots). Typically seen as more of an "arcade" mechanic, the system here is unconventional but works exceedingly well.

The three-click system utilizes the circle in the bottom-right corner that typically shows shot feedback. You press and hold the action button and watch the fill to determine distance. After releasing the button and (hopefully) stopping it in the white ring, a line spins counter-clockwise toward the top of the circle. There, you have to once again press the button to stop it in the white area. Finally, another line goes down counter-clockwise toward the bottom of the circle, where you have to stop it in the white one more time. These three actions--just two for putts--create the distance, accuracy, and rhythm of each shot.

Many three-click swing systems really only have two meaningful button presses (top and bottom), so the design here is more nuanced, which is fitting considering the analog stick swing system is more complex than your average golf sim.

What's really great about both systems is that they are adaptable to your skill level. Both swing styles have six different difficulty levels to choose from, so beginners can hit awesome shots and turn in low scorecards with either method. The three-click system can get intense on higher difficulty levels, so it can certainly still be used by "serious" players.

The fine-tuned swing system is what makes PGA Tour 2K23 really hum, but it's bolstered by many other smaller features that elevate the overall golfing to a realistic level, including ball alignment for altering trajectory, shot-shaping, and numerous shot styles. You're given full control over your pre-shot setup, which is just about as important as the swing itself. But again, if you just want to play casually and don't want to worry about any of this stuff, the many customization options allow you to tailor the experience to be as straightforward as you like.

The smaller issues I had with 2K21's on-the-course gameplay are gone in 2K23. Putts with proper speed seemed to drop into the hole more often, which is great because there were too many lip-outs that didn't really make sense in the last entry. Hitting out of the rough also feels more realistic this time around. Previously, the penalty for an off-line teeshot was often immense, with short rough and especially "heavy rough" making the ball react like you were hitting it out of weeds up to your knees. Wayward shots can--and will--hurt you at times, but I found that it's more possible to pull off a great recovery shot that has the higher ball flight you'd expect.

MyCareer has a slew of improvements. Here, you work your way up from the Korn Ferry Tour to the PGA, earning points toward your season-long ranking as well as in-game cash, other items, and the attention of sponsors. Up until now, the only way to customize your stats was to purchase and add new clubs to your bag from major brands like TaylorMade, Titleist, Callaway, and Mizuno. Now there are multiple meaningful progression systems, including an overarching Archetype choice, further club customization via Fittings, and skill points.

Archetype drastically alters your strengths and weaknesses. You can choose to be adept at putting, bombing teeshots, shot-shaping, recovery shots, or swing rhythm. You can change your Archetype at any time, and it's beneficial to choose an area to boost that you're weak at. You can even be clever and adjust your Archetype based on the course you're playing.

No Caption Provided

When you buy new clubs in real life, you often get a club "fitting," to see what works for you. In 2K23, fittings are essentially modifications to specific clubs to alter your stats--they can make a big difference. You earn these by defeating your "rivals" in tournaments, but you can also buy them in the in-game marketplace. Yes, this has the potential to mimic NBA 2K's MyPlayer system in which you can pay to get a better player. That said, I've earned plenty of fittings through the solo career mode and feel as if my golfer is gradually getting better. Paying to have the best stats right away doesn't appeal to me, but it could make playing online somewhat annoying down the line. Overall, I see the Fittings as a way to incentivize playing through multiple seasons of MyCareer.

There are also skill trees for each club type. You earn skill points through play that add bonuses to your attributes throughout the round based on performance. These activate/deactivate based on set conditions and offer minor boosts to aspects like timing, lie conditions, flight, and swing path. They can be reset and tinkered with at any time. I didn't notice any big differences from these skill trees, but it combines with Archetypes and Fittings to give you more control over your created golfer outside of just picking their clubs and outfits.

I'm not as sold on the new golf ball features, as they generally feel like something that are designed to get you to spend money. Your golf ball has the name and look of popular real-world golf balls like Titleist Pro V1 or Bridgestone B XS TW, but the stats are tied to consumables. Golf balls have four stats: spin, flight, bounce, and roll. "Ball Types" alter these stats, and these consumables even come with rarities ranging from common to legendary. Sounds like most sports games these days, right? Yes, sadly it is.

Bought in packs of 3, 6, or 12, they aren't yours to keep. You use one up every round. Thankfully, you can purchase these with virtual currency earned simply by playing (even solo mode). You can, however, buy currency with real money to pick up these consumables. I would never do this, but it's worth noting that the stat changes are immense with some of the pricier and "rarer" options. You can alter a stat up to 60 points over the free, no stats-boost ball type.

No Caption Provided

I could envision this becoming an issue for someone who plays a lot of rounds online. Courses can have firm greens, rainy conditions, lengthy layouts, or any number of quirks that set up better for longer carry distances, more spin, more roll, etc. You could theoretically use up all of your stat boosts and consider spending real money if it helps you enough. Unlike fittings, this new feature doesn't feel aligned to gradually making your golfer better--it's just one of the annoyances that plagues modern sports games with online communities. It's still too early to say if these consumables will contribute to a pay-to-win model, but they feel at odds with PGA Tour 2K23's dedication to realism. After all, your golf ball attributes should be connected to the brand and model of ball.

Though PGA 2K21 technically had real pro golfers, they were only your competition; you couldn't play as them, which felt weird. PGA 2K23 remedies that. Led by cover star Tiger Woods, 2K23 has a bunch of well-known PGA golfers, including Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Tony Finau, and Will Zalatoris. It also has LPGA stars like Lexi Thompson and Lydia Ko. And hey, it even has golfers who defected to the controversial LIV Golf League like Open champ Cameron Smith. 2K has already stated that it won't remove any LIV golfers from the game, but it's still a bit funny since they are banned from PGA Tour events. At least those guys can still compete at The Players Championship and in the FedEx Cup… just not in real life.

The addition of playable pros is particularly great for casual rounds of golf. Sometimes you don't want to play as a created golfer; you'd rather step into the shoes of Tiger Woods and swing the club just like him. It's nice to see swings that look ripped from real life from these pros, too.

PGA 2K23's official course list has expanded as well, but not by a whole lot. There are three new courses at launch: Wilmington Country Club (South Course), The Renaissance Club, and St. George's Golf. The latter pair are particularly cool, as they are the first in the series outside of the United States. The Renaissance Club is a links-style course, which offers a welcome change of pace. Several iconic courses will be added at a later date, including Pebble Beach and two Torrey Pines tracks. The returning courses and the new ones don't look much different than 2K21. The graphics in general are quite similar to PGA 2K21. Swing animations are more fluid, but the actual scenery didn't receive a big bump despite the two-year gap between releases. Courses are still rendered in more than enough detail, though, so this isn't really a concern to me. If you were expecting a huge makeover on the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, however, you're not going to find that here. If you own a new-gen console, you will appreciate the faster load times, though.

No Caption Provided

The lack of a more robust course list means that the career mode still utilizes user-created courses for a bunch of the tournaments during the season. Many of the courses made within the in-game course creator are wonderful, though. There are even faithful recreations of other real courses. The only time throughout the season where I wished there were more courses was when I played the Major Championships. PGA 2K23 has the season-long FedEx Cup, the playoffs, and the "fifth major" that is The Players Championship, but it doesn't have the four most important tournaments of the year: The Masters, US Open, PGA Championship, The Open. This may have bothered me more this time around because we now know that EA Sports is bringing back its golf series next year--without Tiger Woods, who is with 2K now, of course--and already showed off a glimpse of Augusta National, the hallowed site of The Masters.

But at the end of the day, the easy-to-use course creator and growing library of user-created courses gives PGA 2K23 a seriously vast library of layouts that outweighs its lack of iconic real-world courses. After spending two years with 2K21, I still regularly found new courses I loved, and I'm sure that will be the case with 2K23 as well.

PGA 2K23 is great for solo mode against the CPU pros in MyCareer, but Online Societies is what will likely keep golfers on the course. It's hard to say much about Online Societies in 2K23 since the game is in its infancy, but 2K already has its official society up and running with active tournaments. You can create your own societies–basically clubs–to play alongside your friends, or join one of the many other societies that cater to all skill levels. Online Societies offers an easy way to compete on the course against other golfers without having to actually go head-to-head at the same time. Playing in tournaments is a good way to earn virtual currency from purse prizes.

No Caption Provided

Everyone should try the Online Societies mode, but you can also play head-to-head against friends online or with local multiplayer. In addition to playing 18 holes, you can also face off in Topgolf. The party game asks you to aim at targets to rack up the most points across ten shots. Topgolf is a lot more fun in real life, unsurprisingly, but it's still a nice little bonus for when you want to play against friends but don't have time for a full round.

It's worth noting that there's also a Clubhouse Pass--the golf equivalent of a battle pass--that'll be available at launch for $8. Owning this pass lets you work toward unlocking premium cosmetics--purely cosmetics. It wasn't live yet so I can't add any insight here, but it's good that it's tied to cosmetics and not stat-changing items. There is a free tier as well, so you'll earn cosmetics with the pass regardless if you pay for the premium version or not.

With retooled swing mechanics, including an inventive three-click system, PGA Tour 2K23's on-the-course golfing is the best yet, not just in the series, but in the history of the simulation golf genre. Mostly smart improvements to MyCareer mode make you feel more in control of your created golfer's trajectory–even if the new consumables have the slight potential to become pay-to-win. Finally being able to play as real pros again is a joy, but the minimal real-life course additions put a slight damper on the fun. Nevertheless, it's not lacking in content in the slightest thanks to the engaging Online Societies mode and the endless possibilities provided by user-created courses, many of which could be mistaken for layouts designed by well-known course architects. PGA Tour 2K23 continues the series tradition of being welcoming to new players while offering an authentic, challenging golfing experience for those who desire it.

  • Leave Blank
  • New swing meter feels more natural
  • Three-click swing system innovates on the standard formula
  • You can finally play as Tiger Woods in a new golf game again
  • More customization options for your created golfer
  • The official course list is very similar to 2K21
  • Golf ball "consumables" don't gel with other progression systems
  • Not much of a visual upgrade on new consoles

PGA TOUR 2K23 review: Bringing a new swagger to the course

By colin mieczkowski | oct 21, 2022.

2K Sports

Title:  PGA TOUR 2K13 Developer: HB Studios Publisher: 2K Platforms: Steam, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 (reviewed on), PlayStation 4, Xbox One Release Date:  October 14, 2022

PGA TOUR 2K23 is upon us, marking the fifth installment in the longtime series formally known as The Golf Club. What was once known as a golf game with a focus on amateur play soon became a PGA TOUR-branded game in a few years. Eventually, the once-independent HB Studios teamed up with 2K to help publish PGA TOUR 2K21 .

Now, PGA TOUR 2K23 is here, featuring Tiger Woods in the game and on its cover after the 15-time major champion agreed to a deal with 2K and HB. The game features several other tour pros aside from Woods such as Rickie Fowler, Tony Finau, and Collin Morikawa.

This also is the first game in the series to include LPGA Tour pros. Major champions Lexi Thompson, Lydia Ko, and Brooke Henderson are the current LPGA superstars included in the game. And yes, you can tee it up with any of these pros in the game which is something you couldn’t do in 2K21.

Topgolf is the newest mode for the game this year while modes such MyCAREER, MyPLAYER (Builder), and the Course Designer return with new features. And of course, the training mode is back so you can polish those stick-swinging skills.

Gameplay is both familiar but different at the same time. It has a nice balance and that is where we will officially begin this review. Gameplay is important for any game but especially sports games like PGA TOUR 2K23 .

PGA Tour 2K23

So, as mentioned, the gameplay is both recognizable and new at the same time. You still have your classic swing meter from 2K21 while you also have another control scheme that is also old school but is new to the series and that would be the 3-Click system.

With the 3-Click, you need to hold down the X button (if you’re on PlayStation) and you’ll see a couple of thin bars that move around the circle like clock hands. You need to get one at the top of the circle and one at the bottom to achieve the perfect swing.

It’s a nice change of pace from the Swing Stick and one that will be familiar to longtime golf gamers. The Swing Stick itself remains essentially the same but it does feel much more satisfying than before when hitting shots from tee to green.

As with essentially all sports games, PGA TOUR 2K23 does offer several difficulty levels. There’s an option for any kind of golfer whether you’re new to golf games or a hardcore player who’s been teeing it up for years.

The difference between the difficulty levels of 2K23 compared to 2K21 is how better balanced things are. If you’re playing on Amateur or lower, for example, things are going to be much easier to handle on the course, allowing you to have some fun without much frustration. The timing window for shots is much bigger and simpler to hit and you can enjoy the luxury of the Putt Preview feature.

Meanwhile, going with Pro or higher will present a uniquely tasty challenge for the long time virtual golfers. You’ll need to be extra accurate with your shots as well as your putts. In particular, hitting those splash shots out of the bunker will provide an extra challenge so make sure to bring a pale and a shovel in case you get trapped. It makes things all the more satisfying when you hit a beautiful shot out of the sand.

The animations are new and improved as well, making each round feel more enjoyable from a visual standpoint. This also makes things look twice as realistic as well. The guys at HB Studios re-did the animations from scratch to accomplish this.

MyCAREER/MyPLAYER

What’s a sports game without a career mode, right? Well, PGA TOUR 2K23 brings back its MyCAREER mode which has been a staple in the NBA 2K series for many years now. MyCAREER brings some familiar features back from 2K21 while also presenting several new cool things as well. One big downer about MyCAREER I’ll say is that you do need to be connected online in order to play which, for a single-player experience is unfortunate.

As for features, there’s a new archetype system that’s available for your MyPLAYER. You can choose what kind of golfer you want to be. More of a heavy hitter off the tee? Then Powerhouse is your archetype. Maybe you want to be a master of putting with the flatstick? Then Greensman is your style.

The good thing is that you can switch up your archetype at any time during your career. You can then alter your attributes by using certain clubs and balls. So essentially, you can do a little mixing and matching between your archetype and the equipment you use to build the ultimate golfer in PGA TOUR 2K23 .

It’s a good way to showcase your style of play. Yes, it would be fun without archetypes as well but at the same time, it’s nice to be able to give your golfer a bit of flair when it comes to your play on the golf course. There’s another new feature called Skills.

Skills, when active, give you boosts on the course when you complete certain goals in PGA TOUR 2K23 . For example, if you get two FIR (Fairways in Regulation) in a row, you’ll get a boost for your driving ability while missing a couple in a row deactivates it. You need Skill Points to unlock each of these skills.

MyCAREER consists of a PGA Tour schedule that features both fictional and real courses (more on courses in the next section). One of the neat things is that you can swap out courses for unofficial tournaments. This is a great way to get a fresh new experience with several events while mixing that with authentic PGA Tour tournaments.

You’ll also be able to earn sponsorships through your play. A cool thing about this is that you can actually lose these sponsors as well if you play poorly. So this adds a bit of pressure when you’re playing on the Korn Ferry or PGA Tours. Don’t worry, though as you can earn these sponsors back by playing well in tourneys.

Each sponsor will offer you certain things. For example; Titleist’s main offerings are clubs and balls while Nike offers mostly apparel. From there, your play will determine your overall standing with that brand. Win tournaments and get some finishes in the top 25 or higher and you’ll keep the brands happy.

Speaking of gear, there are several brands available in the game in the Pro Shop. These include Taylormade, Callaway, Nike, Jordan, Puma, Addidas, and Malbon among others. There will be more brands available later on.

Rivals also return as well, which gives you the opportunity to outplay them on the course during a tournament. If you do so, you’ll net rewards that are related to that golfer. If you defeat Rickie Fowler, for example, you’ll get his Puma “P” hat and his driver, snatching them away from him.

There’s a tier system with the Rivals, with different groups in each tier. Eventually, you’ll be able to take on Tiger Woods to get his driver and his iconic Scotty Cameron putter. The nice new rewards make the Rivals system more intriguing this time around.

Oh, and one last thing about your MyPLAYER real quick; you can change your caddie as well. Yup, that’s right; if there’s a caddie you feel is as cool as you then choose them and have them rocking a bib with your name on it during tournaments.

PGA Tour 2K23 - PGA 2K23

OK, so let’s talk about the golf courses in PGA TOUR 2K23 . There are 20 licensed courses with most of them returning from 2K21. Some of the new tracks include Wilmington Country Club, St. George’s Golf & Country Club, and The Renaissance Club. Iconic courses like Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill, and Torrey Pines will be added at a later date.

Seeing the courses in 60fps is breathtaking. The way each track feels more lively is great. Things like vegetation pop out with grass, trees, and plants looking more realistic than before. Also, hazards truly feel like hazards.

If you’re in heavy rough, make sure to club up multiple times. And in the sand; ditto. Make sure to club up at last once when you make your splash shot. If you feel like you might struggle in these situations then don’t worry; playing at a lower difficulty level will make things a bit easier.

The course designer also returns and is as nice as ever in PGA TOUR 2K23 with a much smoother interface for starters. Plenty of familiarities are there while adding some new things such as the Spline tool that allows you to create bunkers, walls, fences, etc by sort tracing or drawing the shape of the thing you’re trying to create. Trees and plants were also remade from the ground up visually.

So along with the licensed courses, the talented PGA TOUR 2K community will undoubtedly come through again to design several courses going forward (I already played a few of them). It’s always good seeing this feature return and adds more replay value as it always has.

Online/Topgolf

And finally, we come to online play. Many of the same modes from 2K21 return such as Head to Head (9-holes), Quick Match (3-holes), Wagers, High Rollers, and Divot Derby. One thing that was pretty rough about the previous game was the loading times but this time it’s much faster when playing online and everywhere else as well.

Societies also return as well so if you’re new to the series and want to be part of an in-game community, then Societies is the place to be. Just go and look for one and join or request to join and then participate in events that are scheduled. Nothing much changed from 2K21 when it comes to Societies.

Another way to play online is through the new Topgolf mode. Here, you can battle it out with three other players to see who reigns supreme on the range. It plays just like Topgolf in the real world and each player gets 10 balls to achieve the best score. It’s a fun mode but let’s hope they add a nighttime setting as well.

Overall, PGA TOUR 2K23 is an upgrade from 2K21 from a gameplay standpoint. Hitting those perfect shots and sinking those winning putts feels sweeter than ever. The sounds of golf and new animations are pure and add to the immersion of the experience. All in all, it’s probably one of the smoothest playing golf games of ever.

PGA TOUR 2K23 (PlayStation 5) Score: 8.5/10

PGA TOUR 2K23 doesn’t hit you with a shipload of content, but with some of the best gameplay ever in a golf game along with returning features like MyCAREER, Societies, Quick Match, and the course designer as well as the addition of Topgolf and the new MyPLAYER Archetype/Skill system, there’s plenty of replay value at the virtual links.

What it’s like playing the PGA Tour’s new virtual reality golf game

The PGA Tour announced Thursday that it has paired with GOLF+ to create a Tour-sanctioned virtual reality golf game.

I don’t often play video games at work.

Tempting as it may be, I have long believed the line between “gainful employment” and “filing for unemployment” rests somewhere between the first and third games of PGA Tour 2K23 on, say, a Tuesday afternoon. Nobody — no matter how passionate — wants to get caught controller-in-hand while their boss is trying frantically to reach them.

But some rules, as the saying goes, were meant to be broken. And on a recent morning in the GOLF.com offices, that’s precisely what happened.

There I was, in the midst of an early-morning virtual round on the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, when I heard a voice. It was Alan Bastable, GOLF’s executive editor (and my boss), standing just a few feet in front of me.

“…Dude?”

“Oh! Hey!” I stammered, backing away slowly.

“What’s going on here?” Alan asked.

It was abundantly clear what was happening. Alan had caught me in the act, Oculus headset on, floundering joyfully through a virtual reality golf course when I should have been working. Just a few feet to my right, the team responsible for making the video game, GOLF+ , looked on gleefully. Or at least, they sounded gleeful. I was immersed in the virtual world around me, unable to see the room I stood in or the people who shared the space with me.

Tiger Woods 2k23 covers

‘Virtual’ Tiger is back: Woods to grace cover of PGA Tour 2K23 video game

I held a device that resembled a golf club in my hands, the grip giving way to a steel shaft, which attached at its midpoint to a device resembling a Nintendo Wii controller. With the headset over my eyes, I was absorbed — all 360 degrees — in the virtual world around me, a landscape that could have been plucked straight from the copy of 2K22 in my living room. It was time to play my first round of VR golf…in front of my boss.

Inside the golf industry, GOLF+ is enjoying a healthy dose of newfound celebrity. The brainchild of Ryan Engle , an Austin-based tech wunderkind and obsessive golfer, the app owns something of a first-mover advantage in the topsy-turvy world of VR. It is among the only golf-focused apps currently available to users, and it is by far the most well-funded, having raised millions from a glittering list of investors that includes Rory McIlroy, Tom Brady and Ben Crenshaw. In the months since that announcement, GOLF+ has exploded into the golf space, announcing partnerships with TaylorMade, Pinehurst Resort and Pebble Beach. On Thursday morning, the PGA Tour announced that it, too, had partnered with GOLF+ , bringing the complete suite of TPC courses to the app in a move that will make GOLF+ the “official virtual reality golf game” of the Tour. (GOLF.com and GOLF+ have no business affiliation.)

pebble beach in VR

Inside the app, it’s easy to understand the hype. Golfers can simulate the experience of playing actual golf, completing rounds from tee to green in a matter of minutes, minus the walking. To hit a driver, iron or chip shot, users grip the golf club attachment and make a swinging motion as they typically would. While the weighting is different (the controller is considerably lighter than an average club), the ball responds as it does in real golf (my ugly push-slice bears no difference between VR and real life). The putting function — which simulator golf has never quite cracked — is particularly eye-opening; in practice mode, players receive detailed analytics about their stroke, tendencies and potential fixes.

Courses are fully immersive, with true-to-form routings and bunkers — the hard work of what Engle calls a “crack team” of two GOLF+ coders. It takes just two weeks or so for a course to go from laser-mapped to ready for gameplay; the relative speediness of this process has allowed GOLF+ to add a catalog of new courses in just the last two months, with more on the way.

VR golf tools

But back in reality, the picture isn’t quite as rosy. Meta, the parent company to Facebook and godfather of VR, has seen its share value nosedive in 2022 after reporting disastrous earnings related to its $10 billion investment in VR. Competition from within the tech industry, once expected to be a key factor in driving down costs, has slowed in some cases, and stalled all together in others.

Then there’s the technical issues still facing the platform. The Oculus headset, which is required for use, is still quite costly ($399) and uncomfortable when worn for long stretches of time. The operating software is prone to glitches and other hiccups. And while VR visuals are quite impressive on the whole, they’re still a long way from anyone’s definition of “lifelike.”

When I posed this quandary to Engle, he offered a counterargument. Of all tech products, he said, the growth curve of the Oculus most closely resembles the iPhone. Significant advancements in both hardware and software have proven expensive, but they’re not far off, he said. Soon, he predicted, the barrier to entry won’t feel quite as large to average video game consumers, and once consumer demand explodes, the resultant investment will improve the product just as quickly.

Then the possibilities for GOLF+ will be truly limitless: better headsets, better graphics, more realistic swing mechanics. One future advancement that has Engle particularly excited is the platform’s ability to turn architectural drawings into honest-to-goodness digital designs, bringing to life “ghost courses” — courses that were designed but never built.

If it sounds a little far-fetched, that’s because it is. This is, after all, the central thesis of the tech industry: It always seems impossible…until someone else does it.

Just as Engle said that, the two of us were interrupted. To our right, my boss Alan was trying on the headset for the first time. We watched as Alan hit his first putts, marveling at the brave new golfy world in which he had found himself.

“Wow,” Alan said, his jaw slightly agape. “This is wild. “

Ryan turned in my direction and smiled. He had made his point.

Play PGA Tour 2K23 For Free This Weekend On Xbox Game Pass

PGA Tour 2K23 will be free to play this weekend for Xbox Game Pass Core & Ultimate subscribers. The latest PGA Tour 2K game offers playable pros, championship courses, a new mode, and more. If you’ve always wanted to play PGA Tour 2K23, or get into the series, now might be the best chance yet. Therefore, we’ll show you how to play PGA Tour 2K23 for free this weekend. Without further ado, let’s dive right in.

How To Play PGA Tour 2K23 For Free This Weekend – Xbox Free Play Days

From Thursday, April 11th – Sunday, April 14th (11:59 PM PST), Xbox Game Pass Core and Ultimate subscribers can play PGA Tour 2K23 for free. Furthermore, they’ll also be able to play other titles like Classified France ’44, and Fallout 76 (the latter which is free for all Xbox members for a limited time).

How Do You Download PGA Tour 2K23 For Free? – Xbox Free Play Days

On the console, go to your subscriptions tab within the Xbox Store, scroll down to Free Play Days, and download the select title . This will allow you to play PGA Tour 2K23 for free. Furthermore, the Free Play Day Games are also available at discounted prices, should you enjoy your experience with the game.

Once downloaded, feel free to play PGA Tour 2K23 to your heart’s content. The latest entry in the PGA Tour 2K series offers a wide variety of modes to keep you swinging throughout the weekend. Furthermore, the game also offers Crossplay functionality, letting you play with users on other platforms.

Firstly, PGA Tour 2K, like other 2K sports games, allows you to create your own MyPLAYER and experience your own career. While not as detailed or narrative driven as NBA 2K, it still offers a solid single-player career. Upgrade your player throughout their career and make history on the courses you drive on.

That said, it also offers tons of real, playable pros to use across several modes. From Tiger Woods to Nelly Korda, and even Michael Jordan for those who pre-ordered or purchased a special edition), PGA Tour 2K23 contains an impressive roster of golf ers. Of course, feel free to pin any of them against your own MyPLAYER.

However, if you’re not keen on playing golf you can always create your own course in the Course Designer mode. Overall, this mode allows you to design your own course, its environment, the hole placements, and much more. This mode alone feels like its own separate title, and some of the community creations really stand out. We look forward to seeing more creations come to life this weekend.

Along with new controls, PGA Tour 2K23 also offers a new Topgolf mode if you want to take a break from the courses. This fun new mode offers a quick, plug-and-play mode to get you swinging in no time. Whether you play online against friends or foes, or by yourself, PGA Tour 2K23 offers no shortage of content.

Overall, that includes everything you need to know about the Free Play Days event this weekend. We hope you enjoy PGA Tour 2K23, should you decide to purchase it. Of course, feel free to read our own review if you want to think about trying it. Also, check out 2K’s upcoming Tennis title, TopSpin 2K25.

PGA Tour 2K23 local guest options

You can import another profile from the same console as another player. But will this bring over their stats as well? Or does this only bring over their name?

Also id there a way for a guest player to calibrate their swing? I have not found a way to do this.

Hello Robert Thurman,

Thank you for your contribution to the Microsoft community. When importing another profile from the same console as another player in PGA Tour 2K23, it will bring over their name and stats. However, it's important to note that the stats will only be imported if the player has saved their progress to the cloud or to their local console storage.

As for calibrating the swing for a guest player, unfortunately, there is no way to do this. The calibration settings are tied to the individual player's profile and cannot be adjusted for guest players.

Hope I helped! Please do not hesitate to ask if you have further concerns. I will be waiting for you and I would be more than glad to assist you further. YanYannn Microsoft Community Moderator

Play Fallout 76, PGA Tour 2K23 and Classified: France '44 for "free" this weekend

They're perfect to celebrate the arrival of the Fallout show and the start of the Masters.

Subscribe to our newsletter here!

We're sure you know the concept by now, but each weekend, Microsoft offers a selection of usually around three full games that Xbox Game Pass Core and Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can download and play at no extra cost. This offer is called Free Play Days , which has now started and lasts until 8:00 BST / 9:00 CEST on Monday morning, which gives you plenty of time to explore the titles, and maybe even finish them.

As usual, there are also pretty big discounts on the selection available, and this week is no different. Here are the games included:

  • PGA Tour 2K23
  • Classified: France '44

If you haven't played Fallout 76 before, maybe today is the time to do so as the game is really good nowadays, and it's also a great way to get into the Fallout mood as a preparation for the TV series on Amazon Prime Video that premiered today. Likewise, as the Masters starts today for the PGA Tour, there's no better time to check out PGA Tour 2K23.

FIX THE STUTTERING. Once in a while on almost every hole, I get a stutter. It seems like it's every time the game "calculates" it stutters. This can happen when the ball is in the air, landed or in the backswing. When it happens in the backswing, it's unplayable. Tried to uninstall and re-install. Doesn't help. The update patch did nothing either.
