m25 travel news live

The M25 is the largest ring road (motorway) in the UK. It was originally proposed in the 1958 Buchanan Report on Motorway Development and the first section opened in 1975. It was completed in 1986 and it encircles London, connecting a number of major cities and airports, including London-Heathrow and Gatwick.

Since its opening, the M25 has been plagued by traffic congestion and accidents. In 1997, a section of the M25 was nicknamed "Britain's busiest stretch of road" due to the level of congestion and the number of accidents. As of October 2020, the M25 has seen over 1,860 serious accidents and 47 fatalities in the past five years. Despite these figures, the Department for Transport report that the M25 has seen an overall decrease in fatal and serious collisions since 2005.

Why m25 was not clear from the snow last night, and why there were not enough plow trucks on the road to make it safe for drivers? Who is responsible for it? What are the excuses this year? Please do not blame the snow because we all knew it is coming.

Can you confirm a diversion for M25 on dates 7/10/2021 and 8/10/2021 we have been lead to beleive Fedex drivers had followed a diversion which took them through a redroutes zone. A12 Eastern Avenue & A406.

Traffic at a standstill few miles out of dart Ford tunnel heading north towards M11. Not good.

Again they have the audacity to charge me £2.50 for sitting in ever lengthening queues of traffic at the Dartford CrossingIt should be free if the company making a fortune out of drivers cannot keep the congestion down to a reasonable few minutes

Hi. Can you tell me please how I can find something about the traffic on M25 and M23 on the 28th June 2019? Thank you

M25 closure: Aerial pictures show calm amid weekend gridlock fears with section of motorway shut

A five-mile stretch between junctions 10 and 11 in Surrey is closing from 9pm on Friday until 6am on Monday.

m25 closure

Aerial footage of the M25 showed relative calm on Friday evening, before an "unprecedented" weekend closure of a section of Britain's busiest motorway.

Drivers are being warned of massive delays this weekend, with the M25 shutting in both directions on a five-mile stretch between junctions 10 and 11 in Surrey .

The closure began at 9pm on Friday, with the motorway set to reopen at 6am on Monday 18 March.

This section of the M25 normally carries between 4,000 and 6,000 vehicles in each direction per hour from 10am until 9pm at weekends, so the disruption caused by the works is expected to be significant.

More than 200,000 vehicles are set to be affected, including many travelling in and out of London, and to and from Heathrow and Gatwick airports and Channel ports.

It is the first scheduled daytime all-lanes shutdown on the M25 since it opened in 1986, with National Highways planning to demolish a bridge and install a new gantry.

Jonathan Wade, National Highways project lead, said drivers should "only use the M25 if their journey is absolutely necessary" during the closure.

Read: Everything you need to know about the M25 closure

From junction 10 to 11, a diversion route is in place with cars being told to go northbound A3 to Painshill Junction, on the A245 towards Woking, and then on the A320 to M25 junction 11.

In the other direction, cars are being told to travel on the A320 south towards Woking, on the A245 towards Byfleet and Painshill junction, and then southbound on the A3 to junction 10.

Aerial pictures show the M25 on Friday ahead of this weekend's closure.

Drivers are being urged to ignore satnavs and only follow official diversion routes to prevent causing gridlock during an "unprecedented" closure.

Read more: Map shows diversion route for closure between junction 10 and 11

A map showing the M25 closure and the diversion route

Mr Wade said the amount of disruption will partly depend on whether drivers stick to official diversions.

"How many people are going to take the initiative and try and use satnavs?", he said.

"There's probably a greater risk of congestion by people just doing their own thing and thinking they can perhaps beat the signs and find a shorter or quicker route.

"That will cause further congestion on some of the key junctions so please avoid doing that if at all possible."

m25 travel news live

National Highways senior project manager Daniel Kittredge said: "If people move away from diversion routes that we prescribe, it creates additional issues in different parts of the road network.

"The majority of the time that will be local roads, so that really impacts residents in those particular areas.

"That's why we're trying to encourage people to not follow the satnav.

"Stick on the prescribed diversion route. It's going to be more suitable for your journey."

Sunak suffers disastrous night - the big moments

All the planned m25 closures this may bank holiday weekend.

Drivers using the M25 for UK getaways or seeing family this May Bank Holiday weekend can expect several planned closures.

This weekend's closures affect carriageways, slip-roads and link roads for both clockwise and anti-clockwise directions of the M25, particularly late at night or early in the morning.

Regular updates on roadworks and real-time traffic information can be found on the Traffic England website.

M25 closures - Saturday, May 4

From 10pm on May 4 until 5.30am the following day, the M25 clockwise Jct 26 link road to M11 southbound Jct 6 will be closed.

This is part of a larger closure of the M11 Southbound Jct 6 to Jct 4 carriageway for testing works.

Diversion will be via National Highways and Local Authorities roads.

Similarly, M25 anti-clockwise Jct 27 link road to M11 southbound Jct 6 will also be closed during the same period.

The same diversion plans are in place for this closure as well.

Several sections of the M25 anti-clockwise will be closed from 10pm on May 4 to 5.30am on Sunday, May 5.

This includes the ct 25 to Jct 23 carriageway, Jct 25 entry slip road, Jct 24 exit and entry slip roads, and Jct 23 exit slip road.

All are part of a larger scheme for NEAR enabling works.

Traffic will be diverted via Local Authorities roads.

M25 closures - Sunday, May 5

The closures restart at 10pm on Sunday, May 5 until 5.30am on Bank Holiday Monday, for both the M25 clockwise Jct 26 link road to M11 southbound Jct 6 and M25 anti-clockwise Jct 27 link road to M11 southbound Jct 6.

The same diversion plans are in place as on Saturday.

Several stretches of the M25 in the clockwise direction will also be closed from 10pm on Sunday until 5.30am the following morning.

This includes the entire Jct 23 to Jct 25 carriageway, Jct 23 entry slip road, Jct 24 exit and entry slip roads, and Jct 25 clockwise exit slip road.

All these closures are for NEAR enabling works, with traffic being diverted via Local Authorities roads.

M25 Closures - Bank Holiday Monday, May 6

Just as with Sunday, the closures begin at 10pm on May 6, but this time they will last until 6am on Tuesday, May 7.

The sections of the M25 affected are the same as on Sunday, with the same diversion plans in effect.

This means the closure of the Jct 23 to Jct 25 carriageway, Jct 23 entry slip road, Jct 24 exit and entry slip roads, and Jct 25 exit slip road, all in the clockwise direction.

Motorists who need to use these sections of the M25 during the closure hours are advised to plan their journeys ahead and keep an eye on Traffic England's website for updates on these works.

Telecom boxes are becoming EV charging stations in Britain

STORY: British telecom boxes are being transformed into electric vehicle charging stations. The green cabinets are a common sight on British streets. They store broadband and phone cables for telecom giant BT, but are becoming redundant as the company rolls out fibre. So the idea behind a new pilot project is to make the green boxes, a little greener.(Jess Kyte, Product Director, Etc. at BT Group)“This seemed like a really good opportunity to re-use the points of power, re-use some existing street furniture and help contribute towards that drive towards net zero."Craig Wright is an EV driver who lives in Haddington, Scotland. He knows all too well the worry that can come from searching for a place to charge.“I think that when you're planning a journey, especially a long-distance journey, it helps to have provision. So, that's the main thing. Driving an EV is kind of range anxiety, not knowing if you're going to get a charge to get back home and that sort of thing."He’s not alone.BT says its research shows some British drivers don’t want to go electric because of a shortage of charging stations.Nearly 40% [38%] said they’d have an EV already if charging were less of an issue. There were nearly 54,000 [53,906] charge points across the United Kingdom at the end of last year, according to figures quoted by BT from Zapmap. But the government wants to boost that number to 300,000 by the 2030s.BT’s start-up incubation hub, called Etc., is running the cabinet trial. This is its first charge point… and residents can use it for free until the end of May.Information about pricing, availability and charging speeds is available on an app.“Well, we know we've got to expand EV charging…”Fiona Hyslop is Scotland’s cabinet secretary for transport. She says it will help EV drivers outside of cities.“We know that we can get EV chargers in town centers, actually on the periphery of towns that can be the best place that people can go so they don't have to go somewhere else to charge their car.”BT is planning to expand the project into the English county of West Yorkshire next. It’s eyeing 600 trial sites across the UK.

UK’s rarest cars: 1977 Peugeot 604, one of only eight left

The 604 was associated with senior government officials in its homeland, preferably with the wings be-decked with tricolour flags. In the UK, it was always a rare sight – a car that seemed to regard the Ford Granada Ghia or the Vauxhall Royale with patrician disdain. But now Robert Desmond’s 1977 example is now one of only eight of all types left on British roads.
