PiL unveils new album “End of World” and extensive tour — hear opening track “Penge”

Public Image Ltd. today announced the release this summer of the the band’s 11th album, titled End of World , and an accompanying tour of the U.K. and Europe — news that comes just days after the death of frontman John Lydon’s wife Nora Forster .

The 13-track album is due out Aug. 11 (Pre-order: Amazon.com , Amazon.co.uk , Apple Music ), and opens with the just-released “Penge” — hear that song below — and closes with “Hawaii,” the previously released track that Lydon wrote for his wife as he was losing her to Alzheimer’s disease.

PiL also is plotting a 38-date tour of the U.K. and Europe, which opens Sept. 8 with a pair of shows in Greece, followed by a U.K. run through September and then European dates all through October.

A pre-sale for the new tour begins at 10 a.m. local time Wednesday, April 12, for subscribers to the PiL mailing list . The general on-sale follows at 10 a.m. Friday, April 14.

The new PiL album is the band’s third since reuniting in 2009; the group’s lineup since then has included drummer Bruce Smith, guitarist Lu Edmonds and bassist Scott Firth.

Public Image Ltd. (PiL) will be releasing their 11th studio album and first album in 8 years, End Of World , following the sad passing of frontman John Lydon’s wife of more than 4 decades, Nora Forster, on April 5. End of World will be released on August 11, 2023 on PiL Official via Cargo UK Distribution, followed by a 38-date UK and European Tour.

Earlier this year, PiL released “Hawaii,” the most personal piece of songwriting and accompanying artwork that John Lydon has ever shared . The song is a love letter to John’s wife Nora, who sadly passed away from Alzheimer’s on Wednesday April 5. A pensive, personal yet universal love song that has resonated with many since its release in January, the song sees Lydon reflecting on their lifetime well spent and in particular one of their happiest moments together in Hawaii.

John said, “Nora loved the album, she wouldn’t have wanted us to postpone it or change any of our plans.” Previously he has said of “Hawaii,” “It is dedicated to everyone going through tough times on the journey of life, with the person they care for the most.”

The band began writing and recording End Of World in 2018, during their 40th anniversary tour. After the COVID lockdown, the band regrouped in the studio and, as Lydon now says “there was just this massive explosion of ideas.” The result finds PiL set to release 13 of the best tracks they have ever written. The announcement comes with the release of new single “Penge,” which Lydon has described as, “something of a mediaeval Viking epic.”

Celebrating their 40-year anniversary in 2018, the band is widely regarded as one of the most innovative and influential bands of all time. PiL’s music and vision has earned them 5 UK Top 20 singles and 5 UK Top 20 albums. With a shifting line-up and unique sound – fusing genres ranging from rock, dance, folk, pop and dub – Lydon guided the band from their debut album First Issue in 1978 and 1979’s influential Metal Box through to 1992’s That What Is Not , before a 17 year hiatus.

Lydon reactivated PiL in 2009, touring extensively worldwide and releasing two critically acclaimed albums This is PiL in 2012 followed by their 10th studio album What The World Needs Now… in 2015, which peaked at number 29 in the official UK album charts and picked up fantastic acclaim from both press and public. In 2018 PiL celebrated their 40th anniversary with a career-spanning box set and documentary , both called The Public Image Is Rotten and a 32-date UK/Europe tour, plus dates in Japan.

After massive praise from fans and the media for their previous albums “ Forget the past, Let’s Worry About the Future”  (2016) and “ The World is a Rabbit Hole”  (2021) and sold out concerts all over Norway in 2022,  “Special Agents ” is perhaps their most anticipated album to date.

To record this album Pil & Bue went back into Cederberg Studios in Kristiansand, Norway where they also recorded “ The World is a Rabbit Hole”  and created this emotional and sonic rollercoaster of an album that is a tribute to all the everyday heroes out there.

Pil & Bue comments: We want to acknowledge people that include and take care of people around them. It is a very philosophizing album, that to a certain degree comment on how we all seek detachment to become who we really are. All humans want to feel freedom and happiness, if so, just for a little while. We need more kindness and justice in the world. And those themes will never leave our lyrics. Co-producer and mixer   Christer André Cederberg comments; “This album has it all! Raw energy, pure music joy, anger, sorrow, humor and hope. It is heavy, punk, dynamic,beautiful, melancholic, and experimental! What more can you ask for?”

ABOUT PIL & BUE With one of the best vocalists from Norway,  Petter Carlsen , on vocals and guitar, and  Gøran Johansen  slaying the drums, they are an explosion of hard rock. With subtle, but pronounced references to artists like Placebo, Deftones, Sigur Rós, Anathema and Mars Volta, Pil & Bue delivers “Hard, gloomy & joyful music…”  (Metal Hammer NO)  based on topics like memories, childhood aspirations, use of imagination, video games, and the intriguing online rabbit holes.

The band´s raw and melodic music quickly struck a note with  Hollywood director Tommy Wirkola  who included the Pil & Bue single  “You Win Again”  in his now cult-status movie  “Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead”  which premiered at the  Sundance Film Festival  January 2014.

Also, their single  “Fire”  from their second album  “Forget the Past, Let’s Worry About The Future”  is featured on the end credits of  Hollywood/Netflix  blockbuster “ What Happened To Monday”  (2017).

Public Image Ltd. PiL Announce North American Tour Dates for 40th Anniversary

John Lydon is set to bring his long running post-punk group  Public Image Ltd .  back to North America this fall for an a run of 18-dates celebrating the band’s 40th Anniversary. This is part of what has been  billed as “The Public Image Is Rotten” tour, which is also the name of a  new documentary , and career spanning  box set.

The North American leg of the tour follows dates in Europe and the UK, with the first date beginning Oct. 9th in New Orleans, and the last on November 6th in Mexico city. In between there are dates in Montreal and Toronto, along with two stops in San Francisco, and concerts in Atlanta, New York City, Chicago, Dallas, Seattle and more.

Will Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras Tour’ Setlist Change After ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ Release?

Taylor Swift ’s The Tortured Poets Department has already captivated the world , leaving her fans to wonder whether any of the new songs will pop up on her Eras Tour setlist.

Swift, 34, kicked off her three-hour concert series in March 2023 in Arizona, soon traversing the United States, Central and South America, Asia and Australia. The shows highlight most of her past albums: Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989, Reputation, Folklore, Evermore and Midnights . There also is a section dedicated to “surprise songs,” where Swift adds two new acoustic renditions (most recently, mash-ups) to the show.

Swift has been on hiatus since early March, weeks before The Tortured Poets Department dropped on Friday, April 19. The record, her 11th studio album, features 31 songs including “Fortnight,” “So Long, London,” “Fresh Out the Slammer,” “So High School” and “thanK you aIMee.”

Swift’s fans planning to see Eras later this year — the tour leg kicks off in Paris on Thursday, May 9 — have since taken to social media, curious if they will be able to hear any TTPD live.

Another added, “I am so obsessed with Taylor’s new album idk how to survive the Eras Tour (if I actually go twice I might just drop dead afterwards).”

Since Eras has sections dedicated to Swift’s previous albums , it is possible that TTPD could get its own mini-set in the lineup. Not all of her preexisting cohorts feature the same amount of songs, so Swift could cut some songs in order to add a time for Tortured Poets additions .

Spotify added further fuel to the fire on Friday as Swifties noticed the streaming platform’s official video for “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,” a TTPD track, features footage solely from the Eras Tour.

Swift’s musical director David Cook , who has also been featured on several of her past LPs, also hinted that TTPD songs could make an appearance on the tour lineup.

“Not sure how much I can add to the discourse other than this album is really REALLY good. You FEEL it,” Cook wrote via Instagram on Friday, quoting “Loml” with a mind-blown emoji.

According to eagle-eyed Swifties that captured screenshots, Cook also wrote, “Wait until you hear the live versions.” The addition, however, has since been deleted.

Of course, it is also possible that Swift will drop a TTPD single in her surprise song section.

“How will The Tortured Poets Department affect the Eras Tour ? Hopefully only on surprise songs (in a good way),” an X user theorized.

While Swift has yet to address if TTPD will affect her Eras Tour setlist, she’s given fans insight into how she picks song s for the acoustic section.

Per the Grammy winner, she “invented [her] crazy acoustic section,” to be able to play “as many songs” as she could way over the 44 staples at each show. Adding TTPD tracks there seems like an easy way to do just that, if you ask Us.

The Tortured Poets Department is out now and Swift’s Eras Tour resumes on Thursday, May 9.
