Whether you’re in the early stages of planning your Port Dickson trip, already in Port Dickson or are just planning a Port Dickson day trip, this Port Dickson blog post covers all the Port Dickson attractions you can visit.

But first, where is Port Dickson?

Port Dickson (also called PD) is located an easy 90 kilometre drive from Kuala Lumpur. It’s even closer to KL Airport making this a great alternative to KL if you’re flying in for a quick stopover.

Port Dickson is also great for weekend trips from Kuala Lumpur or as part of a bigger Malaysian adventure if you’re looking for a beach getaway. There are some great resorts here ( read about them here ) and there are some fun places to go in Port Dickson which are worth adding to your Port Dickson itinerary.

Army Museum

Port Dickson Army Museum for port dickson 1 day trip

Port Dickson is home to many army camps, but, more importantly to people visiting, it is also home to an Army Museum which is worth adding to your Port Dickson things to do list.

There are two parts to this attraction in Port Dickson. One part contains galleries which cover the Malay peninsula military history and the other part has old military equipment including helicopters and armoured cars. You can even climb on some of them which are excellent if you’re travelling with kids.

The military history includes exhibits from the time the Europeans first arrived to now. There is a recreation of a tunnel used by Communist guerrillas during the Malay Emergency. Some exhibits are just in Malay, but most are in English too, which is great as you can get a real insight into the history.

There are jeeps, helicopters, a train, armoured cars and planes – making it fun if travelling with kids. While the little ones may not be interested in the history, they’ll no doubt enjoy checking out all the military vehicles.

It’s easy to spend a couple of hours at this PD attraction place and it’s probably my pick of the best place in Port Dickson if you have an interest in military history.

Entry is free. Address: Kem Sirusa, Persiaran Pahlawan, Kampung Baru Sirusa

Click here to read more information about the Army Museum.

PD Ostrich Farm

PD Ostrich Farm at port dickson one day trip

The Port Dickson Ostrich Farm is an interesting Port Dickson place to visit which is lots of fun! Particularly if you are looking for where to go in Port Dickson with kids.

Ostriches are the main attraction here. Some ostriches are quite big – they can grow up to three metres tall and 150 kilograms!  Here you can feed them and pet them and also take a ride on one – although this is not something we’d recommend.

If you tire of the ostriches, there are also other animals to see, feed or play with. Some animals run around outside pens or there are some pens you can enter. This means you can get right up close with many of the animals. Some can be picked up as well.

The range of animals at the Port Dickson tourist attraction includes rabbits, guinea pigs, peacocks, turkeys, chickens, goats, donkeys, camels, snakes, horses and fish.

You can also play in a small playground, ride a horse or try your luck with archery.

If you’re hungry, there is a cafeteria on site.  The cafe has a range of meals including ostrich burgers and satay sticks if you’re so inclined!

This is one of the places to visit Port Dickon offers where you can easily spend a few hours.  There are lots of animals to interact with and it is a popular option for what to do at Port Dickson.

Entry was RM20 for adults and RM15 for kids when we visited with Malaysians paying RM5 less. You pay extra for feed (RM3) or rides.

A ddress: Lot 1419, Jalan Perdana 4

Click here to read more information about the Port Dickson Ostrich Farm.

Sri Anjaneyar Alayam Temple

An interesting place in Port Dickon to visit is the Sri Anjaneyar Alayam Temple.  This is a Hindu temple located by the roadside with a few stalls. It’s a small temple, but well looked after with peaceful sea views.

The temple was started in 1954 by members of the Malaysia Army. At that time, the shrine was in a remote location surrounded by jungle, but today, it is easy to stop by and check it out.

Address: Batu 5, Jalan Pantai, Kampung Baru Sirusa

Yun Loon/Wan Loong Chinese Temple

Port Dickson Malaysia points of interest at Yun Loon/Wan Loong Chinese Temple

Another best place to visit in Port Dickson is the Yun Loon (or Wan Loong) Chinese Temple. This colourful temple isn’t big, but its rich decorations make for a solid Port Dickson tourist spot.

In addition to the temple building itself, there is a small pond and garden complete with turtles and a large tortoise. The turtles are for good luck and it’s considered a good idea to rub their shells! You can also sponsor baby turtles for good fortune.

It is fun to get up close to the turtles and our kids enjoyed patting them. The good luck is a bonus!

Entry is free, donations appreciated.

Address: Kampung Teluk Kemang, 71050 Si Rusa

Alive 3D Art Gallery

Another of the places to visit at Port Dickson is the Alive 3D Art Gallery. If you have ever been to a 3D art gallery then you will know what to expect. If not, it’s basically murals and paintings where you can pose in a certain position and take a photo and it’ll look like you really are part of the action.

For a 3D art gallery, it is pretty good, and there are an impressive 50 3D/isometric murals that you can be a part of. These are arranged into five zones: aquatic, adventure, animation, exotic and dark. It’s lots of fun and a good choice if you are looking for indoor, air conditioned places in Port Dickson.

Make sure you come with other people as this is not a solo attraction – you need someone to take your photo. It’s busy on weekends but can be quiet on weekdays.

When we visited, entry cost RM25 for adults and 20 for kids. Malaysians are RM5 cheaper.

Address: No. 38-40, Jalan DS 2/1, Bandar Dataran Segar, 71010 Lukut

You can buy discounted tickets for this attraction by clicking here.

Wild West Cowboy Indoor Theme Park

The Wild West Cowboy Indoor Theme Park is a small theme park with a few rides for young kids. Otherwise, you will find arcade games, an escape room, 5D cinema with short films, a skunk interactive show and AR shooting games.

Note that apart from the escape room, this attraction is best suited to families with young children who could spend a good half day here. There is only one escape room and lines can be long.  This attraction is probably not the best in Port Dickson for people without children or families with older children.

The Wild West Cowboy Indoor Theme Park is located near the Alive 3D Art Gallery, so these can be good Port Dickson attraction places to visit together.

Address: 59-64, Jalan Ds 2/7, Bandar Dataran Segar

karaoke Port dickson things to do

Karaoke is always lots of fun and there are many places in Port Dickson where you can do this.

A great Port Dickson place to go for a sing along is Bintang Family Karaoke which is near the Grand Lexis.

Many hotels also have their own karaoke rooms. Some Port Dickson hotels that offer this are Lexis Port Dickson , Lexis Hibiscus , Grand Lexis and Avillion .

Bintang Family Karaoke Address:  Batu 2, Jalan Seremban, Tanjung Gemok

Kota Lukut (Lukut Museum and Fort)

Lukut Museum and Fort

Another place you might like to go to during a trip to Port Dickson is Kota Lukut.  This is a historic fort with a museum on top of a hill just north of Port Dickson town.

Built by a Bugis warrior, Raja Jumaat, in 1847, this fort was created so he could watch tin trade in the area. Today, not much remains except for a few ruined walls and stones.

However, the grounds have been transformed into a pretty park area with watchtowers and gazebos. The museum at the bottom of the hill is the main Port Dickson famous place which exhibits historical and cultural artifacts from the mining era of this region. It concentrates on the period from the early 1800s to 1880.

Entry is free.

Address: Lot 730, Jalan Besar, Taman Pd Jaya

Pusat Ikan Hiasan Teluk Kemang

Pusat Ikan Hiasan Teluk Kemang is a marine conservation centre and aquarium. Located by popular Teluk Kemang beach, this centre is easy to visit and is free! The downside is most information is only in Malay, so this is a better option of things to do at Port Dickson if you speak Malay.

There are numerous small aquariums and you can see marine life such as clownfish, sea horses, stonefish, turtles and coral reefs while learning about marine life conservation.

This is a government research centre, and they also help with conservation and releasing turtles into the wild.

Being close to Teluk Kemang Beach this attraction is a great idea when you need a break from your Port Dickson beach activities.

Address:  Batu 7, Jalan Pantai ,  Teluk Kemang

Telok Kemang Observatory

telescope at one of the best places to vist in Port Dickson

When you are thinking about what to see in Port Dickson, you might not consider an observatory; however the Telok Kemang Observatory is well worth checking out.

Located in the Klana Beach Resort  (which is one of our choices for the best hotel in Port Dickson ), non-guests can also visit twice daily for an informative talk and look through telescopes at 3-5 pm and 10:30 pm-12 am making this an option for what to do in Port Dickson at night. But note that shows can be limited in the rain.

In the afternoon, you can view the solar observatory, at night, the night sky. Note that the talks are in Malay, but it can still be an interesting Port Dickson what to do for English speakers.

There are also some astrology artefacts and vintage telescopes. The building itself looks quite futuristic.

However, at the time of publishing this, it is temporarily closed for building maintenance. Click here to see if it’s open again when you are reading this.

Regina Mall

If shopping or some easy family activities are on your list of Port Dickson Malaysia things to do then the Regina Mall is your best bet.

You can buy whatever you need here, including groceries and you can also go bowling or sing karaoke.

Address: Jalan Pantai

Cape Rachado/Tanjuan Tuan

Cape Rachado Lighthouse,

Cape Rachado is home to a historic lighthouse built in 1863 and is worth considering for your things to do in PD list. To reach here, you need to walk for about 15 minutes on a good path but note that it is mostly uphill.

At the top, you will be rewarded with great views of the Straits of Malacca and you can also visit some of the pretty coastline.

This area is also home to a 75 hectare forest reserve with good bird and wildlife spotting. There is a pretty and generally quiet beach as well although it’s not recommended to swim here. You can read more about visiting Tanjung Tuan here .

Entry is RM1.

Address: Rumah Api, Tanjung Tuan, 78200 Alor Gajah

Blue Lagoon

Blue Lagoon Beach Port Dickson, Malaysia

Visiting a beach should definitely be on your what to do in PD list and Blue Lagoon is definitely a great option.

Blue Lagoon, also called Tanjung Biru, is a lovely beach in the Port Dickson area which is popular, but more secluded than most Port Dickson beaches thanks to being about 17 kilometres south of Port Dickson town close to the Tanjung Tuan Forest Reserve (read more about that above).

This means that this is the best place Port Dickson offers to see some wildlife on the beach such as squirrels and monkeys.

While this place to visit in PD is one of the more popular beaches, it doesn’t detract from its beauty thanks to the surrounding forests which also offer some nice shade. There are also great facilities here with toilets, market stalls and a hawker centre. You can hang out for the whole day easily.

The water is calm and shallow, making Blue Lagoon extra good for non-swimmers or families. Water sports are also kept away from the shore and, at low tide, many rock pools are available to explore.

If you’re after a lovely beach, an opportunity to spot some wildlife as well as some Port Dickson beach water activities then Blue Lagoon should definitely be on your list of places to visit.

Click here for more information about Blue Lagoon.

Pantai Saujana (Saujana Beach)

Pantai Saujana, Port DIckson when looking for what to do Port Dickson

Pantai Saujana is one of the best places to visit in Port Dickson if you are looking for a good beach. It’s also a good choice in the evening if you are looking for things to do in Port Dickson at night thanks to the Saturday Night Market across the road. In general, it’s a great place to hang out in the later afternoon and as the sun sets.

The beach itself is about a kilometre long and centrally located. There are changing rooms, toilets, a playground and food and drink sellers. The sand is soft and powdery and it’s kept clean. Water skis and banana boats are available.

More information here.

Pantai Cahaya Negeri And Mangrove Walk

pantai cahaya negeri port dickson to do

For a beach with a twist, visit Pantai Cahaya Negeri which is not only one of the prettiest beaches in Port Dickson with white sand, but there is also a recreational park and a cool bridge (called “Lovers Bridge”) over the water.

pantai cahaya negeri port dickson

The bridge takes you to a mangrove island where there is a boardwalk through the mangroves. It’s especially interesting for kids to be up close to the mangroves and to be walking over the water.

Other Beaches

Other Port Dickson Attractions

There are a couple of other places of interest in Port Dickson that you may want to visit.

We have not visited these personally, so we can’t verify if they are the absolute best things to do in Port Dickson. However, they may be something you would like to add to your things to do Port Dickson list.

  • Extreme Park . Extreme Park advertises activities such as go-karting, paintball target shooting and ATV. Unfortunately, there are many complaints about this online from things not working to height requirements to the fact the activities only last for five minutes. Address: Palm Spring Resort, Jalan Pantai Batu 13 KM 21, Mukim Pasir Panjang Find more information here .
  • Windmill PD Farm . Recently opened this is another Port Dickson interesting place to visit for the animal lovers.  Here you can feed, touch and play with the animals. Address: Lot 3636 Batu, 9, Jalan Pantai Find more information here .

The Lexis Hibiscus is truly a stand out option in Port Dickson. It even holds two Guinness World Records for the resort with the most pools and the resort with the most over-water villas!

There are many room types here, including many over-water villas with their own private pools. These are arranged in a hibiscus shape like shown above. It’s awesome!

Lexis Hibiscus Port Dickson Sea View Panorama Pool Villa Our private pool, sauna and outdoor area

The villas themselves come with two big beds, a glass panel for seeing into the water below, their own sauna, outdoor deck and pool. They also come with all the extras you would expect from a 5-star resort.

There are also many facilities at the Lexis Hibiscus including a pool, many restaurants, indoor play centre/kids club, playground, water sports, karaoke and more. The dining is truly superb at this hotel as well.

The Grand Lexis is also another top choice with its own over-water chalets with private pools.

The rooms are great and spacious with two large beds, a kitchenette, large bathroom and very private pool area with its own outdoor shower.

The resort also has many facilities, including a big swimming pool and a shallow pool with a water playground. There is also an indoor playground, karaoke and many outdoor activities like segways, archery, an inflatable maze and mini electric car.

We have also absolutely loved staying here and hanging out in our own pool.

Avillion Port Dickson

Avillion Port Dickson

The Avillion Port Dickson is located right next to Saujana Beach and is situated within beautiful grounds with much to explore.

There is a range of room types, including beautiful over-water chalets as pictured above. They come complete with awesome day beds where you can watch and hear the ocean as well as king-sized beds and everything you would expect from a top hotel. I also love the outdoor (but very private) bathrooms.

There are also one, two and three bedroom villas and options on land.

The resort itself has many facilities including multiple pools, a water slide, many dining and drinking options, a kids’ area and a petting zoo. We have also loved hanging out here with our kids.

Port Dickson For Kids

Port Dickson is an excellent place to visit with kids – we know as we have been there many times with our three kids.

Kids can enjoy all of the Port Dickson activities above. As with everywhere in Malaysia, kids are made to feel welcome and Port Dickson has an excellent range of family friendly accommodation linked to above.

We have particularly enjoyed staying at the Lexis hotels with their private pools and the Avillion Port Dickson.

If you are looking for what to do in Port Dickson day trip as you are only spending the day in the area, I recommend visiting a beach ( Blue Lagoon is my pick) and then two other Port Dickson places of interest from the list in the Port Dickson day trip blog above.

Some of the best place at Port Dickson options are the Army Museum, Ostrich Farm and Cape Rachado.

If you are visiting on a Saturday, stay for the evening and visit the Saturday Night Market at Saujana Beach.

Guide of things to do in Port Dickson

When it comes to exploring beaches in Malaysia, most of us gravitate towards Langkawi and Terengganu . But there are plenty of pantai s to be found in less-touristy towns too.

Port Dickson is one of them. Just a 2-hour drive from Kuala Lumpur, the coastal town is best known for its laidback beaches that you can check out on a day trip.

To make your trip even more worthwhile, here are 12 activities and attractions in Port Dickson to explore beyond its sandy shores.

A lot of locals and travellers alike visit Port Dickson – colloquially known as PD – for weekend day trips with how close the often-dubbed “resort town” is to KL. This is a recommended way to travel to PD, as there are no direct or express buses or trains to the town.

An option would be to board a bus to neighbouring Seremban and then utilise an e-hailing service like Grab to reach PD by car, which will take about an hour.

Like the rest of Malaysia, it’s typically hot and humid all-year round in Port Dickson.

But it’s best to avoid visiting PD between the months of November and March if you’re planning on heading to its popular beaches. This is because of the Northeast Monsoon season in Malaysia, with frequent rainfall observed during these months.

Things to do in Port Dickson - PD Maze

Port Dickson is popular as a close beach destination for KL folks. But it also happens to have the largest maze in Malaysia that spans over 4,000sqm, PD Maze .

Things to do in Port Dickson - PD Maze

There are 15 sculptures located at different corners of the maze, so it’s not just about figuring your way out of it. You’ll cross paths with trippy metal installations of sculptural human figures “broken” into a series of metal plates.

Things to do in Port Dickson - PD Maze

A full round from entrance to exit takes around 30 minutes, so come wearing comfortable shoes and bring along a bottle of water to stay hydrated. There’s no need to fret about losing your way mid-way, as there are several “emergency” exits in the maze. Umbrellas are also provided to protect you from the heat or when it rains.

Things to do in Port Dickson - Tanjung Tuan Lighthouse

Malaysia is home to a collection of lighthouses that serve up phenomenal views – among them is Tanjung Tuan Lighthouse , formerly Cape Rachado. It’s widely considered to be the oldest lighthouse in the country, as it was built way back in 1528.

It’s also referred to as Broken Cape, symbolising the time when the Portuguese occupied Melaka.

Things to do in Port Dickson - Tanjung Tuan Lighthouse

Visitors can make their way here after a 20-minute climb up Tanjung Tuan, a forest reserve with a small entrance fee of RM1 . During your trek, you can stop by the Bukit Batu Putih peak, which hikers and shutterbugs often head to for breathtaking panoramic views of the Straits of Melaka.

Directions: Make your way to Tanjung Tuan Recreational Forest. Once you’ve paid the entrance fee, it’ll be an easy hike up to the top of the hill where the lighthouse is located.

Things to do in Port Dickson - Sky Ladder Pineapple Farm

If you don’t like pineapples on pizza and prefer to savour them fresh, make a trip to Sky Ladder Pineapple Farm. Not only does this attraction house a whopping 60,000 pineapple trees, visitors can enjoy fresh pineapple juice on a guided tour led by a knowledgeable staff.

Things to do in Port Dickson - Sky Ladder Pineapple Farm

During the tour, you’ll be taken on a lorry ride to explore a section of the 5-acre pineapple field on foot and learn more about the fruit’s cultivation. There will be photo spots such as a blue sky ladder to take pictures at too.

Once you’re done exploring the farm, you’ll receive a complimentary bottle of refreshing pineapple juice. You can expect to spend about 30 minutes here.

Things to do in Port Dickson | A Port Dickson itinerary for 2021

From world-class resorts shaped like a dazzling hibiscus flower to undiscovered beaches, mystical temples and even an ostrich farm, Port Dickson is a town with a surprising amount to do, boxing above its weight class on activities in the surrounding area. So, if you are heading to PD (as the town is affectionately known), what are the best things to do in Port Dickson?

Landmarks in Malaysia - Port Dickson Lexis Hibiscus

About Port Dickson

The town of PD had humble beginnings, first creating charcoal and then becoming a small port used by the British. During the 1820s the town had a bit of a ‘tin rush’ in its Lukut district, ensuring that miners flocked to the town and ensuring that the British started looking more closely at it. The result? The British saw the area’s potential for a large harbour and the area was renamed after the officer in charge of the port’s construction, Dickson.

After some speedy development into a bustling trading post as well as an outpost for the Malaysian army, Port Dickson soon settled into what it is today: a popular tourist destination frequented by locals looking for a break from city life in places like Kuala Lumpur, Melaka and Singapore .

Kota Lukut (Lukut Museum and Fort)

Army museum port dickson, 3d art galleries and upside down houses, wild west cowboy indoor theme park, telok kemang observatory, why go to port dickson.

When we were exploring Malaysia and jotting down the places we really wanted to go, Port Dickson didn’t make it to the top of the list. Off the beaten track for most international travellers, this seaside city doesn’t usually feature on the must-see roster for foreign visitors. But, with locals flocking to holiday in the town each year, there has to be something to it, right?

  • It’s hugely accessible. At only a 90 minute drive out of Kuala Lumpur or Melaka (Malacca), and just 3 hours from neighbouring country, Singapore, it’s an easy place to add to your Malaysia Singapore itinerary .
  • It’s affordable. Malaysia, on the whole, is a pretty budget-friendly place to travel as food, transport and accommodation is all easy on the wallet. But we particularly found Port Dickson to be great value for money.
  • There is a lot to do! Beyond lazing on the beach or zooming around your resort on an e-bike, there are surprisingly a number of great Port Dickson attractions, many of which we’ve outlined below!

port dickson 1 day trip

Tanjung Tuan (the Cape Rachado lighthouse)

It’s probably the largest attraction in Port Dickson – Tanjung Tuan (also known as the Cape Rachado Nature Reserve), an 80-hectare reserve which has beaches, hiking, birdwatching and even a historic lighthouse to enjoy!

The lighthouse is probably the crowning glory of the forest reserve. Built back in the 16 th century by the Portuguese, this fully operational lighthouse helps to guide ships to the Port of Malacca. Great for a photo opportunity, it offers sweeping views of the Straits of Malacca and even as far as the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, across the waters.

The reserve is also acclaimed for all the birds, particularly in the migration period between September and March. Avid birdwatchers can see everything from sparrows and swifts to honey buzzards; or even an eagle or two.

Last, but definitely not least, if you take a wander from the lighthouse down to the beach (through the jungle), you should look out for a small footprint embedded in a rock. Legend has it this is the footprint of Hang Tuah, the famous 15 th century Malay warrior, from when he first landed at the reserve.

Malaysia definitely has a number of exquisite temples (our favourite being the Thean Hou temple in nearby Kuala Lumpur ), and Port Dickson is no different. Here you’ll get your temple fix at Wan Loong Chinese Temple (Yun Loon temple), a Chinese temple that is literally translated as ‘Dragon of the Clouds’.

The temple is located on the coastal road and is definitely worth a visit. Here you can see local residents offering up incense, deep in prayer or just wandering the grounds in this small temple. The property looks almost like a fortress and as you take a stroll around, you’ll find statues dotted around, like the statue of historical monk Xuanzang, Sun Wukong (the Monkey God) or Zhu Bajie (Eight Precepts Pig)

As with all visits to religious sites, please dress appropriately and be mindful of making noise.

PD Ostrich Show Farm

We love ostriches, mainly since they were a big part of Lee’s upbringing in South Africa. So, visiting the Ostrich Farm feels like a little bit of home to us, albeit an even more fun experience!

These fluffy (but slightly smelly) creatures make for a great outing, as the Port Dickson Ostrich Show Farm not only has a large farm full of animals but also activities for kids, as well as a petting zoo and pony rides.

port dickson 1 day trip

The main attraction is the large park which includes the ostriches themselves but also donkeys, guinea fowl, ducks and goats, to name just a few.

If you want to experience a few more activities, the Port Dickson Animal Farm is also paired with a number of other attractions, called the 9 Wonders of PD . Most of these are adjacent to the Ostrich Farm or next to the Aquarium and includes the PD Jungle Park, Ant Planet, Seashell Museum and Dinosaurs in the Jungle.

If the name conjures up visions of beautiful beaches and azure seas, you’ve got it right: Blue Lagoon (also known as Tanjung Biru) is probably the best beach in or near Port Dickson.

Perched about 17 km south of the main Port Dickson town (it’s actually right by the Cape Rachado reserve), this is an exquisite beach which offers you not only great swimming, since the water is quite calm, but also good shady spots considering its buttressed by lush forest vegetation.

It feels like a secluded beach but does have some good amenities, including toilets and food stalls, as well as some great rock pools, so if you’re looking for a top-notch beach experience, Blue Lagoon is definitely your best bet!

Visit the beach

This deserved its only section since Port Dickson is obviously first and foremost a beach resort town, known for its sandy shores. So, it almost goes without saying that the town has a number of top-notch beaches sprinkled across the city and surrounds.

port dickson 1 day trip

Photo Credit: Sham Hardy / Flickr

First up is the Blue Lagoon, which we explored above, but even the neighbouring beach, Pantai Cermin is worth a look. This quieter beach is one of the cleanest in the region and while it’s not white sand (the sand is more a burnt orange colour), it’s a lovely place to chill out for the day, sans all the crowds. It’s also directly adjacent (at the eastern end) to Lexis Hibiscus (read more about that in our accommodation section), so you can visit the resort to make use of the water park or even their hawker street called Hibiscus Walk .

You can also add the beach at Tanjung Tuan to your list and visit that as part of your jaunt in the Cape Rachado park.

Further afield is Moonlight Beach (Pantai Purnama) which, as the name suggests, is supposed to be frequented during the late afternoons, or Pantai Cahaya Negeri, which has white sand and crystal-clear water.

Keen to stay closer to town? Teluk Kemang is the most popular beach with lots of water sports on offer (but lots of crowds too) or take a turn at Saujana Beach – a calm beach which is also just opposite the Saturday Night Market, so great if you can plan those two locations together.

Another two for one deal is Kota Lukut, an area about 7km shy of Port Dickson that boasts both a historic fort and a great museum.

The fort itself was constructed in 1847 by Bugis warrior, Raja Jumaat. Jumaat was keen to establish control over the very lucrative tin industry and saw the fort as a way to keep track. Nowadays the fort doesn’t have much left beyond a few walls and a nearby old palace and burial ground.

That said, the actual grounds have been beautifully landscaped to include manicured gardens and gazebos.

At the bottom of the hill is also the Lukut Museum, built between 1997 and 1999. The museum features important pieces that showcase the tin mining history, as well as some interesting artefacts like pieces from an old sunken Dutch battleship.

Operating hours: 9.00am – 6.00pm daily

This is probably one of the top things to do in Port Dickson, particularly if you have even a passing interest in military matters.

Nestled next to a Malaysian army camp, the museum (also known as Muzium Tentera Darat ) has been constructed inside two repurposed army buildings and has nine galleries plus a smattering of cool exhibits outdoors.

Essentially the museum does what it says on the tin: it documents the army through the ages, including from the 16 th century through colonial occupation by the Portuguese, Dutch and British, before exploring the Malaysian army itself.

The outdoor exhibits are what really makes the museum special in that there are a number of army vehicles on display, some of which you can even clamber on (which is great for kids!). This includes an old steam train, helicopters, tanks and other aircraft. One of the key drawcards is also the CPM (Communist Party of Malaysia) Tunnel which is a recreation of the kinds of underground tunnels used during the Malay Emergency – these reminded us of the Cu Chi Tunnels, one of the notable landmarks in Vietnam .

Location: Kem, Persiaran Pahlawan, Kampung Baru Sirusa, 71050

Operating hours: Wednesday – Sunday 10.00am – 5.00pm (closed Mondays and Tuesdays)

We’re not sure why but 3D art galleries are a huge trend in Malaysia – everywhere we went we found one promoting its wares. And Port Dickson is no different, with a number of these located in the town.

Not sure what a 3D gallery is? Essentially these are interactive galleries with optical illusions, i.e. murals where you pose and seem to be part of a cool theme. They seem to be paired with Upside Down houses which are again photo opportunities where you walk around but photos taken of you make it seem like you are suspended in mid-air, upside down.

The craze is strong in Port Dickson with two leading places to get your silly snaps: Alive 3D Art Gallery and Dream World Upside Down and 3D.

Alive is probably the top-rated with five zones to explore: adventure, animation, aquatic, dark and exotic.

port dickson 1 day trip

Location: 38-40, Jalan DS, Bandar Dataran Segar, Lukut

Cost of entry: 25 MYR for adults (5.75 USD/4.70 GBP) and 20 MYR for children (4.60 USD/3.75 GBP)

Operating hours: 11.00am – 08.00pm daily

Dream is a two-level affair, with the first the Upside Down House and the second with a smaller collection of 3D art.

Location: No 21-G, Medan Remis,, Jalan Remis 2, Batu 5, Si Rusa, 71050

Cost of entry: 25 MYR (5.75 USD/4.70 GBP)

Operating hours: Fridays to Wednesdays 10.30am – 6.30pm (closed Thursdays)

For both, make sure you bring a friend or willing photographer with you since you won’t be able to get those fun photos as a solo visitor.

Rubbing shoulders with the Alive Gallery (it’s actually run by the same company) is the Wild West Cowboy Theme Park. And yes, it’s a theme park dedicated to cowboys (and cowgirls) so an absolutely cracking choice for young kids.

There are rides, 5D (and 7D) motion adventures, heaps of arcade games and even an escape room for those wanting a fun family activity.

The sky is the limit (sorry, terrible pun), at the Telok Kemang Observatory . This modern building is dedicated to astronomy and you can actually peer through one of their telescopes during one of their twice daily guided talks.

Taking places at 3.00pm and 10.30pm, the tours are in Malay but seeing the observatory and also the twinkling night sky is spectacular in any language!

If you’re a fan of astronomy, the observatory also boasts retro telescopes.

More things to do in Port Dickson

We think we’ve covered all the must-do things for the town above but, of course, that’s not the end of Port Dickson activities you could add to your list! Here are a few more ideas that you swap out for your Port Dickson itinerary:

Pusat Ikan Hiasan (Aquarium)

While the name itself translated as ‘Ornamental Fish Centre’, this is an aquarium which is home to a number of small tanks and marine life including anemonefish (known as clown fish), stunning seahorses and even some adorable baby turtles. Speaking of turtles, the property is more than just just an aquarium but is a marine conservation centre which helps to promote turtle conservation.

Fort Kempas

It’s a bit of a trek out of time but you could make your way to Keramat Ujung Pasir, a small town boasting Fort Kempas, a 15 th century tomb for Ulama Sheik Ahmad Makhtum. The best part is probably the legendary ‘ancient lie detector’, the ordeal stone where you put your arm through when answering questions. Apparently when you lie, it starts to tighten!

Location: Jalan Port Dickson, Pengkalan Kempas, 71150 Linggi,

Think you’re an undiscovered star? Well you can grab a microphone at one of the many karaoke complexes in Port Dickson!

The main one is Bintang Family Karaoke . Alternatively, many of the leading resorts like Lexis Hibiscus have their own karaoke options, so you can slink away to your hotel room after belting out those tunes.

Extreme Park Port Dickson

As the name suggests, the Extreme Park is crammed full of extreme activities. You can whizz around in go-karts, zoom past in ATVs (all terrain vehicles), grab a paint ball gun or make like Robin Hood and try your hand at archery.

Location: Batu 13 KM 21, Jalan Pantai, Mukim Pasir Panjang, 71250

Sri Anjaneyar Alayam Temple

It’s not the most exciting Port Dickson temple but this small property does have some great sea views. First constructed in 1954, the temple is still worth a quick visit on your way.

Location: Jalan Pantai, Kampung Baru Sirusa, 71050

Water Parks

Needing more fun activities for the kids (and big kids alike?). There are a number of water parks in the town where you can splash around in the sun on a day out. An easy one to add is probably the Water Park at Lexis Hibiscus, located next to their Hawker Lane and beach.

Where to stay in Port Dickson

There is no doubt that there is really only one place you need to consider when looking for the best Port Dickson hotels: Lexis Hibiscus .

This is more than a resort – it’s practically a national landmark ! The property is unique in that it was constructed in the shape of a hibiscus flower, the national flower of Malaysia.

This sprawling complex also boasts two (count ‘em two) Guinness World Records: one for the most swimming pools in a resort (643) and the other for the most overwater villas in a resort (522).

We loved this resort not only for the amazing overwater villas but also for the amenities: countless bars and restaurants, a free shuttle service to ferry you around, karaoke, a water park, archery, e-bikes for hire and watersports are just some of the top-notch facilities on site.

Not keen on doing an overwater villa? Then Lexis Group also has another property closer to Port Dickson itself, the Grand Lexis , to consider.

How to get to Port Dickson

This of course depends on where you are coming from – we’ve outlined the routes from Kuala Lumpur, Melaka (Malacca) and Singapore below. However, on the whole, it’s best to go to Port Dickson via car – either rental car or taxi.

If you want to find the best rates on car rentals check out the latest deals on RentalCars.com .

Bus routes can be a little sparse and while there is a train station, it’s no longer operational.

From Kuala Lumpur

Most often you’ll be travelling to PD out of KL. This can be done via bus, but you’ll need to split this up into two journeys: a bus from Kuala Lumpur (TBS or Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) to Seremban, and then another from Seremban to Port Dickson.

It’s probably best to travel by car, in which case the distance is 90 km taking about an hour. Just follow the signs towards Johor Bahru / Malacca on the North-South Expressway until you see the Port Dickson Exit.

It is possible to book a taxi – some operators like Grab will do the journey for you.

From Melaka / Malacca

It’s about 80 km which means, by car or taxi, you’re looking at about 90 minutes drive. The route is mainly from Malacca along Route 5, which is a coastal road.

From Singapore

Again, this is best by car and takes about 3.5-4 hours across 315 km.

You can also take a bus directly, with a number of daily busses departing from Singapore, operated by Golden Coach Express and KKKL Coaches.

Frequently Asked Questions – Port Dickson

How long should I stay in Port Dickson?

While there is a lot to do in Port Dickson, you’ll probably want to spend most of your time at your resort. If you ask us, 3 days would be enough and so you could make a weekend (or long weekend) of it.

We’d suggest tagging it onto a trip to Kuala Lumpur or Melaka.

What are the best things to do in Port Dickson at night?

You can sing karaoke or see the stars at the observatory or even go out for a delicious meal. There is also a night market at Tanjung Tuan to check out.

What is the best Port Dickson beach?

That’s up for interpretation but probably the Blue Lagoon is the best beach to visit in Port Dickson.

Port Dickson or Malacca? Which should I choose?

This depends on your travel style. Port Dickson is definitely geared towards those looking for beaches, relaxation and great resorts while Melaka / Malacca is about eating delicious Malaysian cuisine and exploring colonial buildings and sights.

We hope you’ve enjoyed this piece on what to do in Port Dickson, and the best places to visit. Did we miss something? Let us know in the comments or get in touch !

I would like to add that PD boasts beautiful sunsets and one of the best ways to watch this is to join the Dickson cruise. During the 3-hour cruise, enjoy the BBQ dinner and spa in the sea!

Another highlight I would like to add is the annual Raptor Watch, happening from late Feb to late April/early May, when thousands of raptors return from the Southern Hemisphere to their breeding homes in China, Russia, Korea, Japan…

Cape Ricardo or Tanjung Tuan is the best location to watch these majestic birds float in from the closest Indonesian islands over the Straits of Malacca. And if you are lucky, as I have, you can experience watching these birds landing on trees at your eye level! Thanks to the fact that when you are up on the cliff (where the lighthouse is situated), you are standing above trees on the sides of the cliff. Amazing experience not to be missed!

There’s also an interactive Raptor Museum nearby. Bird watching is one of the most interesting Nature things to do in PD.

A 3-day Port Dickson itinerary is enough time to see the city’s top attractions and explore the best museums, plus spend a day shopping for souvenirs. Getting around port dickson.

Getting around Port Dickson is best done by taxi since the city is quite spread out and public buses aren’t always convenient or readily available. Taxis are easiest found on the main road that runs along the coast, but taxis also can be found within the city and near popular tourist attractions. Some travelers opt to hire a driver for a few hours, or alternatively, get the phone number of a driver and schedule rides as needed.

Day 1 Port Dickson Itinerary | Tour Top Museums & Temples

Touring Port Dickson ’s top museums and temples on day one provides an excellent background about Malaysian culture and historical events that took place in the region. A morning tour of Kota Lukut is recommended, as it is about 30 minutes away from other recommended stops.

  • Kota Lukut (Lukut Fort and Museum) – built in 1847, this fort once served as a lookout point for tin traders. Now, visitors can peer over Port Dickson and admire the ruins of this historical site.
  • Army Museum Port Dickson – guests are invited to explore Malaysia’s military through indoor exhibits and outdoor displays of armored vehicles and military units.
  • Sri Anjeneyar Temple Port Dickson – tourists and locals line up daily to get a glimpse of the deity who is rumored to have turned on his own to face the sea.

Day 2 Port Dickson Itinerary | Explore PD’s Beaches & Coastlines

Many travelers visit Port Dickson JUST to lie around on the beach all day. The city maintains several sandy areas along the coast that vary from extremely popular and busy to secluded and quiet. Travelers who haven’t included a beach on their itineraries should consider stopping by at least one of these top beaches in Port Dickson .

  • Cape Rachado (Tanjung Tuan) – travelers who have no interest in watersports or suntanning can use Cape Rachado as their mandatory beach spot in Port Dickson . The area, located inside Tanjung Tuan Recreational Forest , serves more as a birdwatching haven than a draw for beach bums. Travelers have to pass by Blue Lagoon and Cermin Beach (Pantai Cermin), however, to reach Cape Rachado .
  • Blue Lagoon (Tanjung Biru) – just as it is described, this tropical paradise is a popular place to partake in water sports like banana boating and kayaking. Spotting monkeys and migratory birds from the beach also is common.
  • Cermin Beach (Pantai Cermin) – directly adjacent from Blue Lagoon , this nearly deserted gem features “orange” sands and a mangrove forest on the east.

  • Regina Mall – the place to shop in the northern part of Port Dickson is at Regina Mall . The shopping center used to be known as Oceanic Mall due to its location on the coast.
