Bike covers come in two general flavors: “travel” and “stationary.”

Travel covers are made to protect your bike while it's in transit on a bike rack. They feature lots of buckles and straps, allowing them to get a tight, wind-resistant fit around their cargo. This ensures everything stays in place when you’re cruising down the highway.

Covers also help keep your bike clean. Even if you store your bike inside, it may wind up gathering dust if you leave it sitting for too long. If you ride your bike every day, it also protects your indoor spaces from the dust and debris your bike brings in with each ride.

Which type of bike cover is best?

This very much depends on your intended use. If you like the idea of having a cover you can toss on when locking up outside, look for a lighter weight one with lock holes that folds down for easy transport. If you plan to use your cover primarily while hauling your bikes on your vehicle, make sure to purchase one made specifically for that purpose. 

In all instances, only consider covers with waterproof and UV-resistant properties. A cover that merely keeps the dust off won’t do any good in preventing rust and corrosion from developing.

How do I clean my bike cover?

You don’t have to be delicate with your bike cover. Use a hose to rinse it off if you’ve left it outside, or wipe it down with a damp cloth or rag to clean it inside.

I’ve also been known to toss them in the washing machine on a gentle cycle with a very small amount of detergent when they’re excessively dirty. No matter how you wash them, though, let them air-dry. Putting your bike cover in the dryer could damage its waterproof treatment, effectively ruining it.

How long can I leave my bike outside without a cover?

Make sure to cover your bike whenever you plan to leave your bike outside for longer than a day. Parking it outside while going to work day after day is fine, since you’ll shake any standing water off of it when you ride home.

Why Cover Your Bike On A Rack?

A bike is pretty safe on a bike rack when you’re driving along in fine weather.

But what about when the weather turns foul?

Exposing your bike to torrential rain, snow, or ice is not ideal.

Even when the sun is out, dust and UV degradation are undesirable elements.

During inclement weather, a certain amount of debris, grit and spray is thrown up by cars in front of you or passing by.

The drivetrain is always an area of the bike you want to protect.

Grit in the drivetrain wears down the chain , and phenomena such as flash rusting may affect shifting.

Are All Bike Covers The Same?

Bike covers are most definitely not all the same.

The cheaper ones made from less robust materials are designed for stationary storage only.

Bike covers intended for bike racks and road transport will be made from a stronger fabric.

Bike Rack Compatibility

Most bike covers are not meant for use on bike racks.

Those that are will often only be suitable for hitch-mounted bike racks (the ones that attach to the hitch receiver of your vehicle).

A minority can be used on a trunk-mounted bike rack.

A feature common to all trunk-mounted bike racks is their two arms.

The bike hangs from these two arms, but they are an obstacle to most bike covers.

Any cover that is compatible with these arms must include holes or a zip system to accommodate them.

You won’t find any covers designed for use on roof-mounted bike racks .

That’s because they would catch too much air and create a parachute effect that would slow the car down and likely rip the cover.

Features: What Makes A Good Bike Rack Cover?

There are several features for you to focus on when choosing a good bike rack cover.

Bike covers that are intended for transport are made from denser, more heavy-duty materials out of necessity.

This is measured in denier (often written as “D”).

Most bike covers suitable for bike racks are made from at least a 300D polyester .

A bike cover that uses material of less than 300D is likely to be for stationary storage only.

Any material exposed to movement of maybe 70 mph or more needs to be stronger to avoid tearing.

The denier measurement is only directly comparable between products when the material is the same.

For example, nylon may have a lower denier than polyester and still be equal or greater in strength.

(Bike covers are only rarely made from nylon).

Ripstop materials are woven into a square pattern to reinforce their strength.

These might be polyester or nylon.

Waterproofing

At the very least, you should expect a bike cover to be water-resistant or water repellent.

Water in itself does limited damage to a bike and might even lubricate and silence it for a while.

When water is a vehicle for grit and grime it is far more harmful.

Polyester absorbs less water than nylon, so it is naturally water-resistant to a degree.

On top of that natural property, you will often see that bike covers are PU coated .

This makes them robustly resistant to water, or if it doesn’t you have a faulty product.

Taped seams also help make a bike cover waterproof, as the seams are a vulnerable area for water ingress.

Zippers can also be coated and waterproofed, though this is not often a feature of bike covers.

A critical component of most transportable bike covers is the straps and fastening systems that tie them down.

Without this fastening, the movement of the vehicle causes the cover to balloon or billow, which can damage the material and may tangibly slow the vehicle down.

Aside from this undesirable parachuting effect, you should also tie the material down as much as possible to avoid damage to your bike’s finish .

Excessive movement or vibration in the material can wear paint down on your bike.

In rare cases where a bike cover is made from stretchy material (i.e., with significant elastane content), this need for holding down the material vanishes.

The downside of these streamlined covers is less tear-resistance and abrasion resistance.

Rear Light Visibility

Many bike covers are going to block the rear lights of your car, which is hazardous and illegal.

This is a problem you can fix by adding aftermarket trailer lights to your set-up.

Some bike covers come with translucent side panels .

These allow rear sidelights and brake lights to remain visible, so no extra purchase of trailer lights is necessary.

Some bike covers come with built-in eyelets for bike locks.

You can thread a bike lock through these and lock bikes together under the cover.

If you’re using a hitch-mounted rack, you can often lock bikes to the car as well.

Thankyou, that is a good summary and points out the issues, particularly not obscuring the vehicle lights. We have a double bike rack that bolts to the back door of the van ( Nissan NV200), the door is assymetrical so this means that the rack fits to the LH door but the bike rails extend across the RH door. We tried the Oxford Aquatec cover but this is designed to fit symetrically so although well-made does not fit our rack. Also it covers the lights as the van is only small.

We chose the EVOC Travel Bag Pro as the best overall travel case. This case can fit any kind of bike, from a road/triathlon/gravel bike to a big, huge, downhill mountain bike. This versatility really helps the EVOC case stand out from the competition, as most other bags are limited in which bikes they can fit. The Travel Bag Pro has a relatively intuitive and thorough packing process that delivers a reasonably protective hold on your beloved bicycle. EVOC used a three-wheel design with larger, softer wheels; as a result, it has by far the best wheels and rolling ability in this review. As a result, this case blows the competition out of the water when rolling it around on city streets or cracked pavement.

The EVOC was our favorite bike travel case by a solid margin. However, it isn't totally perfect. The positioning of the handlebars when packed up raises concerns. They sit noticeably close to the fork, and Velcro secures them to the top tube pad. It is very easy to imagine the bars slipping or coming loose and damaging the fork stanchions, an expensive piece of damage. That said, we did not experience this issue during our testing. Our bike was totally and completely intact without an ounce of damage. Still, it is important to note it is an area of concern. Another downside is this bag is rather pricey. The Dakine Bike Roller is a clear example of a functional bike travel case at an attractive price point - without all of the bells and whistles. What we are left with is a simple and easy-to-use travel case that is fully capable of hauling your bike around the globe. The load process is exceptionally easy; with no mounting frame on which to bolt your bike, it is quicker and simpler than the competition. This bag is easy to muscle around with plenty of handles, and it also boasts a low weight. This low weight may not seem all that important, but if you are approaching a maximum weight limit set by the airlines, a couple of pounds difference in your travel case could make all the difference. The included fork cover/padding is a fantastic touch and protects your most expensive component very well.

The Dakine case isn't exactly flawless. The loading process is easy and fast, but it is a bit less secure compared to other options we tested. The bike tends to have slightly more movement within the bag than other models where the bike mounts on a frame within the case. While it is a perfectly functional travel case, it might be better suited for the rider whose bike has seen some miles and abuse and those who are not concerned with a small scratch or a scuff.

The Topeak Pak Go X bike travel case worked well with our road and gravel bikes. Road, cyclocross, and gravel bikes tend to remain in more pristine condition than mountain bikes, which take more abuse during regular use. As a result, protection is critical when you're traveling. The Topeak case is far and above the most protective option in our test. The hard plastic shell protects against bumps and bruises when it is being moved around. In addition, this case delivers a nice, secure hold of your bicycle, and there is very little movement.

While this is a great option for road and gravel bikes, mountain bikes do not fit. Repeat, modern mountain bikes do not fit in this case. Modern bikes are too long, and the axles are not compatible with the mounting system in this case. This is an important criticism as it limits the versatility of this case. In addition, the foam packing material included with the case is not sufficient in covering up a larger frame. Our 58cm cyclocross bike still had plenty of uncovered real estate when we ran out of packing material.

Analysis and Test Results

After four weeks of rigorous testing, the dust had settled. We combed through our notes and analyzed everything from the most obvious characteristics of each case to the nittiest and grittiest of details. Alas, we had a winner. The EVOC Travel Bag Pro had the best blend of top-end performance and user-friendliness , and blew the competition out of the water in terms of rolling abilities. The Dakine Bike Roller bag featured rock-solid performance at an attractive price point. Meanwhile, the Topeak Pack Go X earned a nod for transporting road and gravel bikes.

We don't score our test items on price. We are out to find the best-performing bike case without regard for the price tag. That said, everyone wants a good value when they slap down the credit card. The Dakine Bike Roller case is a stellar value. This travel case may not have the fancy features of the more expensive models, but it is functional and easy to use. As a result, this case is a very strong value for the rider who wants a product that is going to get the job done without breaking the bank. The EVOC Travel Bag Pro is on the expensive side of the spectrum. That said, for riders who will be using their bike travel case frequently, it represents a decent value. The quality of the construction and the high levels of performance help justify the price tag. We have no doubt that you will be able to get 10-15 years out of this case, which helps justify the cost.

Packing Process

The packing process is a critical metric. Traveling can be a complicated and stressful process; the last thing you need is to have a bike case that is difficult to load and requires 90 minutes to pack. The goal is a simple and effective loading process that maximizes security. The packing processes of all of our bike cases share many similarities, but some variations make all of the difference.

Most of our cases require you to mount your bike to some sort of frame or stand within the travel case. Mounting to a frame provides a secure hold, and the bike is fixed in a position within the case. This usually includes bolting your fork and frame to the stand that clips or straps into the bottom of the travel case. This is the hardest part of the packing process, as you need to find the correct adapter and make sure the space between the axles is correct.

The Dakine Bike Roller does not use a frame/stand. As a result, it scored at the top of the class in terms of packing process . Start by removing the wheels, handlebars, pedals, and rear derailleur from your bicycle. Use the appropriate padding to cover your top tube and fork. The fork cover is a fantastic touch. Then, stick the derailleur in the derailleur padded envelope and place the rear triangle of your frame onto the foam block that holds it off the ground. Strap the handlebars to the top tube pad, strap the frame into position, and put the wheels in the wheel pockets, and then you're ready to go. The absence of the mounting frame saves significant amounts of time when loading the Dakine bag. It is fair to say this takes about half of the time as some of the more complex options. One could easily argue that the simplicity of this process leads to a less protected bicycle; more on that later.

The EVOC Travel Bag Pro scores exceptionally well in this metric; this is a well-designed case with a highly intuitive packing process. The loading system is quite involved, as you do need to mount the bike to a frame; however, the design and simplicity of the process stand out as impressive. The stand comes out from the case quickly and easily. You prepare the bicycle outside of the case with plenty of room to work. When you're done, simply clip the stand into the bottom of the case, zip it up, and you're good to go. The process isn't dissimilar from the more complicated options, but the directions are clear, the padding is labeled, and EVOC makes it easy on the user.

The Topeak PakGo X was the most complicated case we tested. It was the hardest to load and included the most steps.

Protection is exceptionally important when evaluating a bicycle travel case. It is not uncommon for some bicycle fanatics to have bikes worth many, many, thousands of dollars. These riders can be very protective of their prized bicycle, and rightfully so. Nobody wants to arrive at their dream riding location after a day of planes, trains, and automobiles to find scratches or dents in their frame. A mechanical issue like a snapped derailleur hanger or broken brake lever would be an even less-pleasant surprise.

The most protective bike case in our review is the Topeak Pak Go X case. If you have a high-end road or gravel bike and want maximum protection, this is the travel case for you. It utilizes a hard-shell design, while many other cases are more bag-like, with fabric construction. The Topeak's burly, hard plastic casing protects the bike very well. It can withstand tipping over, getting tossed around a bit, or having other luggage stacked on top of it. The loading process is complex but delivers a solid, protected hold and uses foam materials to cover your frame. So why didn't the Topeak case win best overall case? Because this case does not work with mountain bikes. Due to the longer wheelbase and different axle standards, it only accepts road and gravel bikes and will not work with mountain bikes.

The EVOC Travel Bag Pro delivers a secure hold and protects your bicycle quite well. The frame is partially padded, and a frame/stand holds your bike securely within the case. We only had one concern with this case as the handlebar mount on the top tube padding is a little weak, and the proximity to the fragile fork stanchions is a bit worrisome. There could be a problem if the bars come loose. The Dakine Bike Roller is easy to use but sacrifices a bit in the way of protection, and the lack of a mounting stand means your bicycle is floating around within the case a little bit. When you shake and rock the Dakine case, you can feel your bicycle moving slightly back and forth, which is not ideal. That said, we did not observe any damage to our bike during testing.

Ease of Rolling/Carrying

Ease of rolling is an important metric. Yes, the load process and the protective elements are the most important items to evaluate. That said, after getting your luggage at the airport, you need to find your way to a train or taxi stand. Next, you may need to navigate some city streets with cracked pavement to find your hotel. This isn't the flashiest performance metric, but it's important nonetheless.

The EVOC Travel Bag Pro was a clear winner in this metric. This case has two wheels in the rear, and a third wheel clips onto the front axle. The front wheel is on a swivel while the rear two are fixed in position. The most important aspect is the larger diameter, soft wheels. As they say, big wheels keep on rolling, and the bigger wheels roll smoothly over cracked pavement and rough streets. These are the largest wheels in the review, and they roll the best over imperfect surfaces. In addition, they are constructed of a softer rubber compound, which provides a much more damp and smooth roll compared to smaller, hard, plastic wheels.

The Dakine Bike Roller is a solid performer in this metric. The wheels are smaller than the EVOC Travel Bag Pro and use a much harder compound. That said, the handles and slightly more compact feel work well. It is also quite easy to lift and toss onto luggage check-in stations or load into vehicles. There are plenty of handles to work with, and it has a smaller, less clunky feel. The Pro Bike Travel Case was also a solid finisher in this metric and has an easy-to-use feel and plenty of handles.

Weight isn't a dealbreaker for us, though airlines do have varying weight limits for oversized items and sporting goods. Obviously, the majority of the weight will come from your bicycle and not the case itself. That said, if you are approaching the weight limit and are starting to worry about having to pay additional fees, a couple of pounds difference is certainly noteworthy. Also, a lighter case may allow you to stuff your riding clothes and other soft items in your travel case.

The lightest travel cases in our review were the Pro Bike Travel Case at 17 pounds, 13 ounces, and then the Dakine Bike Roller at 17 pounds, 15 ounces. The heaviest case was the hard-shell Topeak PakGo X coming in at 29 pounds, 11 ounces.

Security is a straightforward metric that evaluates whether or not the case has any security features. Some cases have an integrated lock that can lock it shut. We don't put a huge amount of stock in this metric, as any thief who really wants your bicycle will just steal the entire case rather than opening the case and stealing your bicycle. We still think security is a useful metric and think that a locked case can serve as a deterrent for the opportunistic thief.

The Topeak Pak Go X has a built-in lock; this is a three-number combination lock that secures the zipper. When the lock is engaged, the zippers are tucked into a slot, and you can't get ahold of them. The Topeak case took the win in this metric.

Even cases without locks could be secured with a TSA-approved lock. You can use these locks to bind the zippers together. These locks are affordable, but look like they can be broken with your bare hands.

Ease of Storage

Unless you are tremendously lucky, you aren't traveling with your bike on a monthly basis. In fact, most folks will use their bike travel case less than once a year. As a result, the travel case is going to spend the vast majority of its life packed away in your garage, shed, or closet. Having a case that stows away easily is a significant factor to take into consideration, especially for apartment dwellers who are short on space.

The EVOC Travel Bag Pro was easy to store. The hard shell Topeak PakGo X scored the lowest in this metric, as its design doesn't allow you to collapse the travel case at all. This means the Topeak will occupy a lot of space in your garage.

DO NOT ORDER FROM THIS COMPANY Placed order on February 7th 2024 and today in March 11th 2024, still no covers and also no delivery dates of expected delivery, I have wrote multiple emails to their help desk with still no answer, at this point I have requested a refund and still no answer, it’s funny that if you order from Amazon it says you can get it in a few days but not from the company, even worse that you cannot even contact them by phone, so take my advice don’t order from them, they certainly take your money and don’t even provide you a product….

Perfect fit over 2 e-bikes… use a bungee cargo net over this, to keep it from flapping in the wind.

I ordered (2) bike covers and received (2) camping utensil kit which is not even on their website. Several attempts to reach have gone without reply.

How to choose the best bike cover for you

The best bike covers might seem like a superfluous addition to your list of bike accessories, but a good one can be looked at as an investment in the longevity and protection of your bike. 

Not all of us are blessed with a garage, or even dedicated outdoor storage shed. While some of us are fortunate enough to be able to keep our bikes in the house, some of us need to store them outside, and that's where the best bike covers come in. 

None of the best bike storage solutions involve leaving your bike outside in the rain, but for some, it's an inevitable reality. Unfortunately, this comes with an increase in how quickly your bike will wear, but a good quality, full coverage bike cover can prevent this, and help your bike stay healthier for longer, reducing maintenance costs down the line. 

Some covers are designed to be a permanent feature, others for protection at the office on rainy days where no sheltered bike parking is available. Some are better suited to keeping your investment protected while it’s on a bike rack, and a small minority are even made to help you bring a filthy bike indoors, either into a car or a house, without necessarily having to wash it.

Topeak Bike Cover

Specifications, reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

The Topeak bike cover, available in three options depending on the type of bike you have, is certainly a neat and compact solution when packed away, and out of the bunch it’s definitely the most commuter-friendly. The integrated zippered pouch would easily fit into a backpack without much issue, helping you remain prepared for unexpected rain protection.

It took 1 minute 49 seconds for me to fit this bike cover onto my test bike, which isn't as fast as the similarly pitched Oxford Aquatex, and while it lacks any tensioning besides an elasticated base, the fit was snug enough to avoid any ponding of water during a soaking test. That being said, it was certainly the snuggest fit, even on a 56cm Specialized Allez, and it wouldn’t accommodate my longer wheelbase Fairlight Secan gravel bike, so if you’re running a 58cm frame or larger, I’d suggest this might be too small to reasonably use.

The shape is well thought through to accommodate handlebars, and thanks to the snugness it provided the best fit of the bunch, and the 190T Nylon was plenty waterproof enough to dissuade any water from penetrating. The lack of access holes for a lock does mean the cover will also have to accommodate whatever you’re locking the bike to though, and given it’s already a snug fit this may be problematic.

Re-packing the cover took 1:44, which was on the longer side. Naturally, it didn’t pack away as neatly as it came out, and would need folding to achieve this. I cannot imagine a beleaguered commuter opting to fold a bike cover in high winds, so opted for a haphazard-stuff as a better real-world test - I do worry, too, for the long term service life of the zip, which does strain while packing it away.

Another commuter facing option, the Bike Parka bike cover is constructed from ripstop tarpaulin fabric, with taped seams. I tested the Stash model, which didn’t feature lock access flaps, but Bike Parka also offers an Urban model that does, as well as larger models to accommodate mountain and even cargo bikes. 

The compact size was commuter-friendly, especially considering the stuff sack comes with velcro loops to attach to the frame. While it wasn’t as neat and compact as the Topeak or Oxford offerings, the material itself felt more sturdy, and so for regular commuting rather than occasional use, this might be something that tips the balance for you.

The cinch strap on the spine, as with the Storm Skin, is necessary to avoid ponding, but the material itself is more than waterproof enough to keep the elements at bay. The slightly tacky nature of tarp material made covering a slower affair than most at 1:56, but restuffing was a middle-of-the-road 1:33, though was rather difficult. Again, as with the Topeak and Oxford offerings, folding would likely make it easier, but in the real world, this isn't going to happen.

The Storm Skin is, with the exception of the Nukeproof Horizon, the most bulky bike cover we tested. So much so that I don’t realistically see this as a viable option for a commuter.

While its size may be a drawback for those out and about, it does mean it’s much more accommodating of being placed over bike racks, and so represents a better system for more permanent, at-home protection. Two large slits allow access to locks both at the front and rear, should you wish to be doubly secure, which might be wise as the tropical styling certainly makes this the most aesthetic option too.

The heavy plasticised canvas is rated to 6000mm hydrostatic head, and taped seams throughout keep the water out. Only when spraying a hose directly at the lock openings did I notice any ingress.

An elasticated base, plus eyelets for further bungees help keep the slightly formless shape in check, as does a central elasticated cinch along the spine of the cover - without tightening this, I found ponding of water does occur. Handy arrows point to the front too, which helped when unfurling, but it still took me 2:42 to adequately cover my test bike, the longest time of all. On the flip side, I stowed it away in a minute on the nose, made easy by a roomy stuff sack.

Given the size and the large slits on both sides, I can see this having a use for coverage in transit, but Storm Skin is at pains to point out that it hasn’t been tested for such an application, so do so at your own risk.

Oxford Aquatex

The Oxford Aquatex represents the most ‘no frills’ bike cover in this list. No cinch pulls, no lock loops, just a simply elasticated lower with a belly strap. It wasn’t as tight as the Topeak, though it fulfils much the same function as a lightweight and easily portable bike cover. If you’re looking for something like this and have a larger bike this would be the one to go for, especially if the price of the Topeak isn't for you.

The lack of cinches and larger size did make it a little more flappy, combined with a material that, although waterproof enough to repel even the staunchest battering from the garden hose, felt more flimsy than the similar material used by Topeak. It is however a cheaper offering, and so less durable materials shouldn’t be a surprise.

A 1:39 covering was relatively easy, but the elasticated base isn't the tightest, adding to the flappy feeling. Stowing the cover away took 1:33, though was a little frustrating as the zip on the pouch kept creeping open. As with the Topeak, I worry for the longevity of the zip too.

Nukeproof Horizon

The Nukeproof Horizon bike cover offers something a little different. Much like the Velosock below, it aims to protect the elements from your bike, rather than the other way round. While the Velosock is marketed more as an indoor storage solution for dirty bikes, the nukeproof adds an element of protection to the mix, featuring a padded clamshell design that slips over your bike and covers the majority of it, with the exception of the tyre tread.

The padding is designed to protect the bike in storage or transport, and while there isn’t a huge thickness of foam, it certainly stopped my Fairlight getting dinged in the back of a fully laden Peugeot on an eight-hour drive across the country recently. It won’t stop you from bending a mech hanger, but if you regularly transport a bike inside your car rather than using a bike rack, it represents a good way to keep it safe and stop trail muck from getting all over the upholstery.

The construction is sturdy, but this comes at a cost; the Nukeproof is the most expensive cover we tested by a noticeable margin.

LifeLine Single bike cover

The in-house brand of multisport giant Wiggle-CRC has a tendency to produce well-performing products at an attractive price point. The LifeLine bike cover is no different, and is certainly at the cheaper end of the market.

In form, it is most similar to the Topeak and Oxford offerings, in black and silver, though the material felt thicker than both, and was of course sufficiently waterproof. It was on the larger side though, and rather flappy, so did exhibit some ponding under heavy spray, but not as much as some others.

The Velosock occupies a slightly different role than the other options in this list, that being to protect the inside of your house from the muck on your bike, rather than protecting your bike from the elements. The material is super stretchy, and so can accommodate a wide variety of shapes, though it's a little more involved to install given it goes on from the bottom rather than the top so as to protect flooring - take it from me, black chain grease is very hard to get out of a cream carpet.

If you're not fussy you can get a plain option, but there are pages of design options and the facility to create a completely custom design if that's your thing, and while it doesn't come cheap you could at least try and blend it in with the wallpaper.

Do I need a bike cover?

Bike covers are primarily designed to keep water off your bike, which over time can lead to corrosion. We all ride in the rain, and your bike won't dissolve if it gets wet, but if you are regularly storing your bike outside, either at work or at home, then a bike cover might be a good idea to protect your bike and stop the wear from accelerating.

Which type of bike cover is best?

This very much depends on your use case. If you only need to store the bikes outside at home, and don't need to bring a cover with you out and about then a large, sturdy option like the Storm Skin will likely be the best bet. 

If on the other hand you're commuting and need something lightweight and easily packable then options like the Topeak will be a better bet.

Finally, if you're in need of indoor protection then something like the Velosock will probably be the one to go for, as it can do away with any need for waterproofing.

What should I look for in a bike cover?

All the covers on test here that were designed for outdoor use are sufficiently waterproof to withstand heavy rain. Some are more sturdy, but that won't necessarily keep your bike more dry. The materials will be more durable though, if product longevity is important to you.

For commuters the ability to access a lock is definitely of use; you'll sacrifice absolute waterproofness thanks to having holes in the cover, but they all have flaps and in reality the trade off is worth it.

More expensive options will have some level of adjustable fit, allowing you to tighten the cover around your bike. Without this the material can flap, and even create ponds that will sit until disturbed. While not fatal, this will certainly test the seams of any bike cover over time.

How did we test the best bike covers?

As close to a real-world simulation as was possible was used. Each cover was unfurled without looking a the instructions (it's a bike cover, it shouldn't need instructions) and placed over a size 56cm Specialized Allez. The covering was timed, and then as the British weather wasn't playing ball (it was sunny for a change!), the covers were sprayed for a prolonged period with a hose, particularly at any weak points like seams or lock holes.

The bike covers were then stuffed away into their respective covers, again timed, to give an indication of the ease at which they can be used. While not totally scientific it was certainly enough to differentiate those which were easily stowed from those which were a struggle.

How to select the right traveling bike cover.

There are many different bike covers on the market - and they’re definitely not all made equal.

My point is:  You must be careful about how you spend your money. Here, I’ve covered several factors to look out for to ensure you’re getting the perfect bike cover for your trip.

When searching for the best bike cover you can take a trip or travel with, the first thing you must ensure is quality - as in, that the cover is highly durable and waterproof.

Your bike cover should hold up to the high speeds and the rough weather you might encounter on the road. And a significant factor in this is the material type used to produce the bike cover.

Now, you’re probably aware that several different materials are used to make bike covers, some of which are polyester, nylon, and polyurethane.

Polyester is the best type of material used for bike covers. More often than not, it’s waterproof - and it’s also relatively strong and long-lasting. As such, it’s arguably the best material for bike covers if you’re traveling with your bike: It will help you protect your bike from debris and rain you might encounter on the road.

Polyester will also last much longer than other alternatives.

Nylon is another popular material for making bike covers, primarily because it’s lightweight and boasts waterproof capabilities. Unfortunately, nylon isn’t the most robust material on its own, so it's commonly mixed with other materials to enhance its durability.

 If you’re going on a short ride or need limited protection, nylon might be the best option due to its low cost, though.

Polyurethane is an excellent material due to its waterproofing capability - but it’s not as durable and robust as polyester. 

For any longer trips, you might want to find a bike cover that boasts a mix of polyurethane and some other - more robust - material.

When you’re looking to buy a bike cover, you’ll notice that most bike covers will list the durability and strength of the material with a number followed by the “D” letter. What’s up with that? Well, the “D” refers to the term Denier, which indicates a measure of the strength of a bike cover - or any other kind of fabric - based on the thickness and threads of the cover. The higher the number, the more durable - and thicker - the material is.

Most bike covers have a denier of 120D to 240D. However, you’ll want a cover with a little more durability and thickness if you’re going to travel around with your bike. I generally recommend a bike cover that features thicker nylon and polyester material to provide much-needed waterproofing and durability. For those longer trips, I also suggest a denier rating of up to 600D. That’ll protect your e-bike from the rain and guard it against debris that could bounce up from the road.

The next thing you should keep in mind is the bike cover’s actual size - and, more specifically, if it will fit your bike.

Now, I’ll assume you’ll be buying one online. So, I should probably warn you that it’s generally a bit more challenging to get the sizing right that way.

So, my first advice is: 

Measure the length and height of your e-bike - then compare it to the bike cover’s measurements.

Ideally,  you’ll want a bike cover that can cover your bike fully with some room to breathe. If you're unsure about the exact cover size you need, it’s generally better to go for an oversized cover than a smaller one.

A bike cover that’s too small won’t cover your e-bike entirely and will potentially leave it at risk of damage. However, if you buy an extra-large cover, you can wrap the excess around your bike or use it to cover another one.

Ideally,  you’ll want a bike cover that can cover your bike fully with some room to breathe. If you're unsure about the exact cover size you need, it’s generally better to go for an oversized cover than a smaller one.

As I mentioned before, some bike covers come with extra features that make them easier - and, all in all, better - to use. But again, you won’t typically find these features on bike covers with a lower price tag. However, they make things so much easier in the long run.

One of the most crucial features of a bike cover is the area of reflective material. For example, on most bike covers, the manufacturer often ads several lines of reflective material to the ends, side, or front of the cover. That’s a pretty handy feature because it makes it easier to see when it's on the back of your car.

Try to get a bike cover that has a decent amount of reflective material so you can put your mind at ease regarding someone crashing into your bike by accident.

Furthermore, security is another concern when you’re traveling with your bike: Whether you’re making stops for a bathroom break or to eat, there are times when you’ll have to leave your bike unsupervised. That’s where you need to worry about your bike’s security. You paid a good amount of money for it, after all. The bike cover that you opt for should have a way of accessing the bike so you can secure the bike to your bike rack or post. Most bike covers with security features come with locking loopholes, allowing you to lock the front wheel of your bike to something without having to uncover it. While this can come in handy, it’s not entirely secure. Keep a close eye on your bike, nevertheless - that’s all I’m saying.

Another bike cover feature that’s underrated - or flat-out overlooked - would be the handles. This feature generally comes standard, but some cheaper covers might not include handles.

But are they even that important? Well, the thing is, handles can be helpful in several ways.

First, they make it easy to line the bike cover up with your bike as they provide you with a reference point. 

When it comes to removing or placing the bike cover, handles also make the whole ordeal a lot more manageable. Finally, you can use handles to hang the cover when it’s not in use, whether for drying or storage.

Now, while covers are designed to protect your bike, they, themselves, need some protection, too. When driving, you’ll encounter high wind speeds that can cause your bike cover to flutter in the wind. And if your bike cover isn’t secured correctly, it could fly off, exposing your bike. Obviously, this can pose a massive problem if you’re barreling down a highway or, even worse, if you’re in the middle of a storm. To prevent damaging your bike - or putting other drivers in danger - most models will feature a securing strap to aid in tying them down. The more straps, the better - although most of them only feature one strap.

Color is another thing you should keep in mind when purchasing a new bike cover - and here’s why: For starters, you probably want a bike cover that matches your car - and personal preferences. Plus, you don’t want a cover that might attract too much attention - especially not the unwanted kind. As I already mentioned, you want to keep your bike protected and secured during your trip, so if you call too much attention to your bike cover, there’s a good chance a thief will take notice and try to steal it.

Trust me; they’re aware of how expensive your e-bike might be. Finally, with just about any product you purchase, it’s a good idea to get a warranty if possible. Things aren’t any different when buying bike covers - especially if you want one to hold up on a long journey.

When it comes to purchasing your bike cover, there are a few ways to go about it. Don’t just go to your local Walmart searching for the bike cover - not before exploring other options first. Here are my recommendations regarding where to look for your new bike cover: Online - The most popular way to purchase almost everything these days is by ordering it online. Things aren’t different when it comes to bike covers. Unlike purchasing one at your local department store, ordering a bike cover online allows you to check reviews and feedback regarding the one you plan to buy. That’s really helpful and can save you a lot of time - and, not to mention, money. Local Bike Shop - The second great place to purchase your bike cover is a local bike shop. Bike shops generally keep reputable accessories and parts in stock - and there’s always a sense of trust in the product. In addition, the staff can provide real-time advice - and it’s a good chance they’re already using the bike cover you want to purchase.

There are plenty of choices when it comes to selecting the best bike cover for traveling - no matter the type of bike you have.

How to explore Moscow in 1 day on 2 wheels: 5 cycling routes

Along the moskva river - 29km.

Nagatinskaya Embankment – Red Square – Taynitsky Garden - Kremlin Embankment - Cathedral of Christ the Savior – Luzhniki – The Alley of Fame - Krasnaya Presnya Park - Moscow International Business Center ( Moscow City )

This scenic route along the embankment of the Moskva River will take you away from the city’s infamous traffic. Start at Nagatinskaya Embankment, one of the most beautiful in the capital due to the fascinating architecture dotted along it.

Cycle onto Novospassky Bridge and cross onto the other side of the embankment before riding over to Ustinsky Bridge. Jump off your bike and take the stairs down.

Once on level ground, pedal past two of Moscow’s most iconic landmarks - Red Square and the Cathedral of Christ the Savior - then on to Luzhniki.

Follow signs to the Novodevichya and Savvinskaya Embankments.

Ride in the direction of Smolenskaya and Krasnopresnenskaya Metro stations and you’ll eventually reach the Moscow International Business Center (Moscow City) and its stunning array of skyscrapers.

Soviet grandeur - 13km

VDNKh - Moscow Botanical Garden of Academy of Sciences - Rock Garden - Ostankino Park - Ostankino Palace

If the sights and sounds of the city center are wearing you down, head to VDNKh. It’s a unique park, rich in history and architecture. The complex includes more than 500 permanent structures and 49 of them are objects of cultural heritage. Cycle through the park before arriving at the Moscow Botanical Garden of Academy of Sciences, right next to VDNKh. Then follow signs to the Rock Garden, also referred as the Moscow’s “stone jungle.”

Ostankino Park is the next stop and it’s known for its wide avenues, ponds, and lush greenery. Cycle a little further and you’ll come to some beautiful examples of 17th and 18th century architecture. Ostankino Palace is a unique Russian monument made entirely of wood and amazingly it’s retained its original interiors.

Bright lights, big city - 12km

Moscow International Business Center ( Moscow City ) - Radisson Royal Hotel (Hotel Ukraine) - Square of Europe – Observation deck - Ministry of Foreign Affairs  - Arbat Street – Red Square

Try this route at night and you'll be blown away. The Russian capital is a city of contrasts: Set off from the Taras Shevchenko Embankment and soak up the striking modernity of Moscow City before cruising past the classical, Stalinist magnificence of the Hotel Ukraine.

Pass by both the Berezhkovskaya and Vorobyevskaya Embankments and take a break on the observation deck at Sparrow Hills. From here you can see all of the Seven Sisters skyscrapers. Next, ride on down to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then to Arbat Street, which will lead you to an unforgettable view of the Kremlin and Red Square.

Right in the capital’s heart - 9km

Rozhdestvensky Boulevard - Tsvetnoy Boulevard - Strastnoy Boulevard - Novopushkinskiy square - Tverskaya Street - New Arbat Avenue - Patriarch Ponds - Garden Ring - Moscow Hermitage Garden

This route takes you right through the heart of the city center. Glide past some of Moscow’s most iconic sights. Start at Pushkin Square and bike over to the Government of Moscow building. Then head to New Arbat Avenue and take a rest at Patriarch Ponds. Visit the Bulgakov Museum and take a look at the Moscow Satire Theater and Mossovet Theater. Continue biking towards Sadovo-Trimfalnyy Square and follow the signs to Moscow’s Hermitage Garden. Here you can enjoy a cool beer in the shade.

Chistyye Prudy to Sokolniki Park - 7km

Ustyinsky  Square -  Chistyye  Prudy - Sretensky Boulevard - Sovremennik Theater - Komsomolskaya Square - Sokolniki Park

This route starts off at the Ustinsky Bridge that stretches over Moskva River. After enjoying the beautiful views bike northeast to Yauzsky Boulevard, continue onto Pokrovsky Boulevard, and then cycle to Chistoprudny Boulevard. Your first stop will be Chistyye Prudy – a park in the city center surrounding a charming pond and pavilion. There are a number of sculptures and monuments here that have been glorified countless times in both literary and musical works.

Once you’ve had your fill of Moscow’s “green island,” pedal in the direction of Turgenevskaya Metro - you’ll end up at Academician Sakharov Avenue. Then continue to Komsomolskaya Metro followed by Rusakovskaya Street. Turn left and follow signs to one of the city’s most bike-friendly parks: Sokolniki.

Here’s what’s in the proposed $1.35B Seattle transportation levy

The property tax would pay for road repaving, bridge repair, bike lanes and sidewalks. Advocates say it should do more.

This fall voters will decide on Mayor Bruce Harrell’s proposal to renew Seattle’s $1.35 billion transportation levy.

If approved, the tax would pay for the next eight years of major city transportation projects, including street repaving and lighting, bridge maintenance, sidewalk construction, bike lanes, street tree planting and more.

The proposal, which Harrell called “clearly the biggest levy in our history,” would add $148 per year to a median homeowner’s property tax bill.

In his speech announcing the proposed transportation plan , Harrell emphasized the need for safety for all modes of travel.

“As mayor we wanted to create a city that’s safe for all people. Whether public safety in terms of crime or transportation safety, it is all about making sure we can be who we want to be in a safe environment,” said Harrell on Thursday.

He continued, “This bashing of modes of travel will not happen under a One Seattle approach. We need safe, reliable, connected transportation systems that will recognize that.”

The plan would spend about $423 million on repaving and street improvement projects on 50 of the city’s most heavily used streets. Many of those repaving projects would include multi-modal elements such as protected bike lanes, bus lanes and sidewalk repair.

Another $218 million would go toward bridge maintenance and repair. There are 135 bridges in Seattle and they’re getting up in years, with an average age of 60 years.

Transit riders would get a boost through a $121 million investment in bus-only lanes, priority traffic signals for buses, improvements to sidewalks, and lighting and crosswalks near transit stations and bus stops.

The plan proposes spending $109 million on sidewalk construction and repairs. Seattle has about 11,000 city blocks with no sidewalks. The renewed levy would build an additional 250 blocks of new sidewalks and 10,000 accessible curb cuts. In 2017, Seattle settled a lawsuit for violating the Americans with Disabilities Act with its lack of curb cuts, and agreed to build 25,000 additional curb cuts by 2035.

About $107 million would be dedicated to Vision Zero and school safety projects. The money would be spent to improve streets identified in the city’s “High Injury Network” as having frequent crashes and fatalities, such as Rainier and Aurora avenues.    

The plan would spend another $100 million to modernize the city’s traffic signal systems and wayfinding signage.

Rounding out the $1.35 billion: $94 million for bike infrastructure; $57 million to activate street space for pedestrians through parklets, signage and more; $49 million for climate efforts such as street trees and electrified transportation; $48 million for neighborhood street projects; and $25 million for freight mobility.

The city’s current $930 million transportation levy was passed by voters in 2015 and is set to expire at the end of the year. It costs the median Seattle homeowner $435 a year in property taxes. Renewing the levy at $1.35 billion would add another $148 per year to that median homeowner’s property tax bill.

“This is big ball for what we’re trying to do — reflecting what we need to do and what kinds of investments we need to have to make sure our future is safe,” said Harrell in his speech.  

Though the mayor’s proposal would be historically large, some transportation advocates say it falls short of what the city needs to spend to move the needle on street safety for all modes, along with climate goals.

The Urbanist reported that a coalition of advocates, including Disability Rights Washington, Seattle Neighborhood Greenways, Cascade Bicycle Club, Seattle Subway and others, put the price tag at more than $3 billion to build out sidewalks, transit corridors, bike lanes, crosswalks and signals citywide along with safety improvements on the city’s five deadliest streets.

Harrell emphasized Thursday that the proposal is still in draft form. The city is soliciting public feedback on the proposal until April 26. The mayor promised to incorporate that feedback into a final draft of the plan he will send to the City Council in May.

If approved by the City Council, the levy will appear on this November’s ballot.

Closure Notice: As of late August 2023, a trestle bridge is out along the trail. The Trail is currently closed between the Alpine Animal Hospital and the Jorstad Family Farm (5101 Pullman-Moscow Highway), affectionately known as the "Siggie Dome". Please check local news sources before heading out on the trail.

The Bill Chipman Palouse Trail stretches 7.1 miles through the rolling wheat fields of the Palouse region, offering a convenient, paved connection between Washington State University and the University of Idaho.

The trail follows a piece of corridor from the former Union Pacific Railroad (constructed by the Columbia & Palouse Railroad in 1885), which transported passengers from Colfax to Moscow. The last passenger train ran in 1957. Now, the wide, mostly flat pathway—a respite from the area's many hills and valleys—accommodates non-motorized users of all types, with additional trail connections at either end.

Along the route from Pullman to Moscow, 13 original railroad bridges cross Paradise Creek. Opportunities abound to spot birds and other forms of aquatic wildlife thriving in and near the water. Trail users will also find emergency phones, restrooms accessible for people with disabilities, benches, bike racks, and interpretive signs describing the history, agriculture, and ecology of the region.

The Bill Chipman Palouse Trail overlaps with the Pullman Loop Trail for approximately 1 mile, starting near the Chipman trailhead at Bishop Boulevard. From here, you'll cross Paradise Creek to a cirque of benches and an interpretive station at Birdhouse Depot. Magpies are common; the stream also provides a habitat for hawks, falcons, and more than 100 other bird species.

As you travel farther along the gentle uphill grade, you'll come to the next point of interest, a giant grain elevator. A greenway buffers you from the four-lane highway to Moscow, as do the lovely waysides with interpretive signs and benches along the corridor. Grab some water at Neil Wayside near Pullman. This dry, unsheltered path is often windy heading eastward.

The trail culminates at Farm Road (Perimeter Drive) in Moscow. Continue east on the 2-mile Paradise Path through the north and east edges of the University of Idaho campus and up Paradise Creek to the Moscow city limits. Here, you can connect with the paved, 12-mile Latah Trail to Troy, Idaho.

Parking and Trail Access

There are two spots for designated parking along the trail. At the western terminus in Pullman, there is parking at the gas station across from the trailhead, 1455 SE Bishop Blvd. Halfway between Pullman and Moscow, there is parking at the Sunshine Trailhead. 

Although there is no designated parking at the eastern terminus, the trail ends here in downtown Moscow where there is ample public parking.

Flat, yes, but….

Id rate this trail a C- overall for a couple of reasons. The biggest drawback is the overfilled cracks which have been poorly managed. These bumps are hard to take on a rigid frame road bike and they are frequent—as in every few yards. The continual jarring diminishes the riders experience overall. Secondly, as of late August 2023, the bridge near Pullman is out. Some local kids decided to party there and burned the bridge. There is a detour that takes you onto Highway 8, but that’s never enjoyable to ride a busy highway. I wouldn’t recommend going out of your way to ride the trail, bu rid you happen to be in the area and want to do a short ride it’s okay.

Great trail for biking between Pullman and Moscow

I only bike this trail, when I want to go to Pullman for some reason and prefer to bike there rather than drive. I don't choose this trail to bike on for the scenery, because the Latah Trail between Moscow and Troy is a lot nicer. But I do like this trail a lot. While you are parallel to the highway, which isn't a big highway by any means, it's not as loud and intrusive as you might think.

Easy commuter trail along the creek

This trail is perfect for an evening workout or leisurely ride. It is a slight but noticeable downhill from Moscow to Pullman, the two end points of the trail. Also there can be a strong wind from the SW. So keep these two facts in mind when take off. The trail is well marked, wonderfully maintained, smooth surfaced with great views of the rolling wheat fields of the Palouse. It also connects to the Paradise Trail system in Moscow and through to the Latah Trail to the city of Troy. Good for roller blades too.

Not much traffic noise

"Although the trail does parallel the 4-lane road, we have to say that with the wind blowing, we barely heard any traffic noise. There is a nice buffer of green space between the trail and road on most of the pathway which was visually appealing along with providing a ""comfort-zone"" for riding. The green hills and wildflowers added to the beauty. Overall, we had a great ride on this path. Thank you Rails-to-Trails!"

"The Chipman Trail is an amazing 8-mile trail between Pullman, WA, (WSU) and Moscow, ID (UI), through the rolling Palouse. It is pristinely paved with minimal traffic and winds its way along a stream for a short time, past solo trees and a few horses or cows depending on the season. It has beautiful purple, yellow and white wildflowers along with high wheat fields at the peak of the season. It's a fabulous journey east and can get a bit windy for those heading West, which makes the journey even that more exhilarating. I've left Washington state for Washington, DC now and I must say one of the things I miss is my daily blade on the Chipman Trail. Enjoy and say ""Hi"" to the Palouse for me! :)"
