Vaccination and visa requirements for African countries

Some popular safari destinations may require you to have received certain vaccinations in order to enter the country as a tourist. Inoculation requirements can include vaccination against COVID-19 and yellow fever, and you'll need to get these vaccines before departing on your trip. Be sure to bring proof of vaccinations with you. If you are transiting through another country en route to your safari tour, you must check that you also meet immunization requirements for the stopover location.

Note that, outside of what's required, there are a number of other vaccinations that are recommended, so ensure you're up to date and fully protected before you travel. In addition, many safari locations are prone to malaria; you should consult with your doctor to see if you need to bring anti-malaria medication on your trip.

Safari countries have varying visa requirements for travelers from the U.S. – these are detailed below. Depending on your itinerary, you may need a single- or multiple-entry visa, and some visas require you to apply in advance of traveling and/or have a certain number of blank pages in your passport. Regardless of your destination, your passport should be valid for at least six months before you leave for your trip.

Here are the vaccine and visa requirements for major safari destinations as of November 2022:

Botswana: If you have recently visited a country where yellow fever is common, you will need to be vaccinated against this illness. This does not include the U.S. but does include a number of countries in Africa, Central and South America. Consult the World Health Organization's website for a list of countries with risk of yellow fever transmission, including Kenya and Uganda.

U.S. citizens and nationals can stay in Botswana for 90 days without a visa.

Kenya: Travelers to Kenya must have been vaccinated against COVID-19 with the last shot administered more than 14 days before arrival in the country. Unvaccinated visitors can enter with a negative PCR test, conducted no more than 72 hours before departure. Proof of COVID-19 tests or vaccines must be uploaded to an online system called Panabios. Kenya is a country where you'll be at risk of yellow fever transmission; it also requires those traveling from other places with yellow fever or cholera outbreaks to be vaccinated against these illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that you protect yourself against yellow fever before your trip here.

Americans need an e-visa to enter Kenya. You should apply online at the eVisa government website no more than eight weeks before your trip, as visas are not available upon arrival in Kenya. See more on the U.S. Department of State's website .

Namibia: Those traveling from a country where yellow fever is common need to be vaccinated against it. No visa is required as long as you're staying for 90 days or less.

Rwanda: If you're coming from a country where yellow fever is endemic, a yellow fever vaccination is required before departure.

U.S. citizens and nationals can be issued a 30-day visitor visa on arrival in Rwanda or through the Rwandan Embassy in Washington, D.C. A single-entry visa costs $50, and it's recommended you bring sufficient cash in U.S. dollars to pay for this (although credit card payment may be accepted at Kigali International Airport). Consult the State Department website for more information.

South Africa: A yellow fever vaccination is required if you're traveling from a country with a risk of transmission. No visa is required for stays of 90 days or less.

Tanzania: Travelers must be able to present proof of COVID-19 vaccination with a QR code to enter Tanzania. Unvaccinated travelers must take a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure, and the test results should be accessible by QR code. Yellow fever vaccines are mandatory if you're traveling from a location where yellow fever is present – including if you spend more than 12 hours in transit in such a country.

Visas are required for tourism in Tanzania. You can apply for a single-entry, 90-day visa online for $50 – and be sure to print a copy of the approval to bring with you. The processing period takes up to 10 days. You can also obtain a visa on arrival for a $100 fee; it's recommended you bring cash to cover this. Find more Tanzanian visa information on the State Department website .

Uganda: To enter Uganda, you must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or present a negative test taken no more than 72 hours before departure. Like Kenya, Uganda is a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. All visitors must show proof of vaccination against yellow fever to enter Uganda, regardless of where you're traveling from.

American visitors to Uganda must apply online for an electronic visa before departure; arriving in Uganda without completing this process could result in your detainment. Visit the State Department website to learn more.

Zambia: Visitors who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 must show proof of vaccination but do not need a test to enter Zambia; unvaccinated travelers must undergo a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure. Yellow fever vaccines are only required if you're coming from an area considered at risk.

Visas are required to visit Zambia, but these can be obtained online before your departure or at a port of entry. Check the State Department website for more details.

Zimbabwe: To enter Zimbabwe, travelers must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or must take a negative PCR test no more than 48 hours before your departure. As with other countries on this list, visitors from countries with yellow fever outbreaks also require a vaccine against this illness.

U.S. visitors can obtain a 30-day, single-entry visa upon arrival in Zimbabwe for $30. If you're taking a tour that requires you to leave and reenter Zimbabwe, be sure to get a double-entry visa for $45. You can learn more from the State Department website .

Royle Safari Reviews

  • Wildlife Holidays

Mammal Watching

Eco tourism, conservation.

Over the last 11 years Royle Safaris has excelled in providing innovative, quality safaris, wildlife holidays  and  wildlife tours to some of the most amazing destinations in the world. Often focusing on some of the world’s rarest and most elusive species. With a great selection of wildlife tours tailored to view some of the most charismatic and endangered animals on the planet we are sure you will find a wildlife watching tour which will take your fancy. We specialize in wildlife holidays  to countries which are often difficult to get to and navigate around; however it is often these countries which provide some of the greatest wildlife spectacles.

All of our safari holidays are unique because they have been designed by zoologists, conservationists and biologists and this gives anyone on our trips having the best chances to see wildlife and the largest list of animals sightings on our trips. Our trips are guided by the best local guides and where possible professional zoologists, biologists and conservationists as well; we make the most of the latest sightings in areas and remain flexible to make sure we can place ourselves in the best places for the best sightings. We also use the latest wildlife watching technology, such as thermal imagers, high performance spotting scopes, night vision etc. All of these reasons make our wildlife watching holidays among the very best in the world.

All of our trips are run with small groups and we also pride ourselves on being able to run private tailored tours for anyone from solo travellers and couples to larger private groups.

We also make sure that we maximise our time spent wildlife watching in the field ona all of our safaris  visit countries and regions not available with other  safari holiday  providers, makes our  wildlife tours and  wildlife holidays  the best for the wildlife enthusiasts.

Royle Safaris specialises in Mammal Watching Holidays with a special emphasis on some of the rarest mammal species in the world. We have pioneered mammalwatching trips for some of animals which were previously deemed impossible. We started with snow leopard tours to India and that has spread to us offering snow leopard watching holidays to Russia, Nepal and China in addition to India. We have also established sustainable eco-tourism in the Russian Far East where we have an incredible success record in seeing Amur leopards and Siberian tigers whilst helping out the local community and in particular with our reforestation project in the Russian Far East ( Trees For Tigers ).

It is not just big cats we have developed trips for, we have also pioneered the first successful trips for Javan Rhinos , Giant Pandas , Mandrills , Sand Cats and many more, we even have a whole category of wildlife tours which focus on Rare Mammal Watching Holidays .

Many of the mammals we aim to find are very elusive, and so it takes a very dedicated trip, with long hours of staking out waterholes or silently cruising down a river scanning the banks; some trips require all night long spotlighting sessions as the mammals are nocturnal.

We have a range of very specialist tours which focus on nocturnal spotlighting and some which are specialist for marine mammals , whale watching , dolphin watching , bat watching , snow leopards tours , wild dog watching , lynx watching , tiger safaris , big cat safaris , orca watching , bear watching , ape tours , small cat tours , primate holidays , orangutan watching , jaguar safaris , gorilla tracking , wolf watching , red panda watching and marsupial tours .

Whether you are a casual wildlife lovers who want to see a polar bear or elephant in the wild or a hardcore mammalwatcher we have the perfect mammalwatching holiday for you.

Eco-tourism is not just a word to us, it is our guiding principle and foundation of all of our trips and safaris. Everywhere we run trips to we carefully choose accommodation, suppliers and transportation that either minimises its effect on the environment or helps to contribute to its sustainable development. By choosing small, privately owned accommodation where possible we also look to only stay in truly eco-lodges that abide by basic and also pioneering methods of ecological sustainability. Where possible, we make sure that the lodges, hotels, guesthouses, camps and ranches that we use support local projects for the protection of the wildlife and local communities which rely on tourism as the principal source of income.

We are a guiding light for many small independent accommodation providers when it comes to educating the use of solar power and water recycling pumps etc as well as making sure that all the food consumed is produced locally. We also contribute and participate in as many studies that the local researchers are conducting as possible.

Some of the destinations we visit have strong environmental problems which we are also keen to address and educate further. These range from poaching and illegal logging to mining and habitat encroachment. We believe that with the increase in sustainable eco-tourism we can show a would-be or former logger or poacher that there is a better long term financial benefit of having the environment intact and thriving instead the short-term gain from exploitation.

Much of this work is done through our very own non-profit organisation Trees for Tigers which helps to reforest areas of the Russian Far East as well as education local schools about living sustainably with the forests and wildlife within it. But we also contribute to a myriad of other conservation, research, educational and eco-tourism projects around the world.

At the forefront of all of our trips is a conservation of the animals, areas and habitats we visit. Only through the sustained conservation will there be areas of wilderness and animals around to explore and watch in the wild. Our director and founder is a zoologist and nearly all of our guides have history or education in conservation, research, biology or another environmental science. It is this ethos and ethic that gives Royle Safaris’ wildlife watching the edge on other tour operators.

We plan our trips around the best current data, wildlife movements, seasonal trends and conservation models. Being based around the science of wildlife watching and not hospitality we are able to be more flexible and change and move trips around to make the most of new sightings, new hotspots and other quick changes which will drastically increase our chances of seeing wildlife.

We also remain up to date with the latest conservation projects and research and do our best to educate our clients on the importance of conservation and sustainable eco-tourism for the world’s wildlife and wilderness to thrive into the future. Whether that is highlighting the hugely important role of bats in ecosystems as we go looking for bat colonies in caves or if we are showcasing the move from poaching to guiding that many people throughout Africa and Asia have undertaken over the last 10-20 years.

Whether big or small the conservation measures that we see being done around the world are all very important. We are part of and contribute to many projects from small scale habitat restoration in the gardens of eco lodges to international level reintroduction programs for the rarest species in the world.

There has never been a more important period in history for conservation and we go out of our way to highlight and support sustainable conservation projects globally on all of our trips. For anyone who is interested in wildlife conservation and research we encourage you to contact us and we can help to provide as much information and answer questions you may have.

Why go with Royle Safaris

Making the world of wildlife watching easier.

It’s a fair assumption to make that most people have an innate love of the natural world and that safari holidays are becoming more and more popular. Unlike many other tour operators we specialise in organising tours which focus on some of the rarest and most elusive species around the world. This ideology has allowed us to pioneer wildlife watching tours to the Russian Far East as well as for species as rare as Javan Rhinos and Giant Pandas .

By always looking at new itineraries and new ways to observe animals we are kept at the cutting edge of wildlife watching which is why Royle Safaris has some of the most innovative and exciting wildlife watching holidays in the world.

Combining local experts and trained zoologists with the latest technology and very competitive prices, we make sure that we have exquisite tours to suit all budgets and interests.

Offering our guests the chance to get ‘hands on’ whilst on our tours we always try to incorporate hiking, tracking, snorkelling or diving to get you closer to the wildlife as well as on some of our trips getting involved in the research and conservation of various species around the world. All our tours are designed with a researcher or wildlife film maker in mind; this is to ensure that when we go into the field to search out rare wildlife we put ourselves in the best positions at the best time of year to get the best interactions.

A quick look at our tours and we are confident you’ll soon recognise how different and exciting our tours are. With over 100 different safari tours to look through, it’s fair to say that we’ve got all the best wildlife watching destinations covered. From classic big five tours if East and Southern Africa , to breakthrough destinations in Bangladesh , Western Australia , Sichuan , Gabon , Ethiopia and Russian Far East , we leave no stone un-turned in our quest to bring you to the most unique, rare and beautiful wildlife in the world.

FOR EXPERIENCED WILDLIFE WATCHERS & NOVICES ALIKE

Being wildlife enthusiasts ourselves we understand that there are some destinations in the world which are head and shoulders above others. Great national parks such as Serengeti , Masai Mara , Kruger , Yellowstone , Great Barrier Reef and Bandhavgarh are all well known and millions of people travel here each year for the brilliant wildlife; but there are many hidden gems in the world which we specialist in bringing people to.

Royal African Safaris

Richard Coke

Q&A with Richard Coke

With 24 years of guiding across the continent I feel incredibly privileged and honored to share Africa’s wilderness, and it’s diverse wildlife and cultures with my guests. There is so much to see and experience; the first safari is just the tip of the iceberg – let’s plan your next adventure…

What drew you to Royal African Safaris?

What is your greatest accomplishment?

I had the opportunity to be connected to nature during my childhood, be it on family trips to the bush, galloping around our farm on my horse in South Africa or exploring the woods on the family estate in England. I always wanted to learn more about Africa’s wilderness areas, its wildlife and to pursue a career where I was somehow connected to it. So, I’d have to say that becoming a safari guide is my greatest accomplishment. For the past twenty years, I have been sharing my passion with my guests and am still as excited about it now as I was on my first day of guiding.

What drives you? or What are you passionate about?

There are three things that drive me: 1) Staying healthy and fit; I love getting out in nature either on my mountain bike or on foot. It is essential for both my mind and body, along with a balanced diet. 2) Designing and choreographing safaris for my guests and sharing with them the many different experiences and emotions along the way. 3) My son Oliver; exposing him to as much of the world we live in as possible. I would like to help him realize how important it is to be respectful, compassionate and sensitive to the natural world and the people with whom we share this beautiful planet.

If you had one last safari where would you go and why?

It would have to be a safari to Namibia and Botswana. I’d have to start off in the Namib desert where I began my guiding career. This special place teaches you to appreciate the smaller things. It is also the perfect location to get a better understanding of our planet’s geology. I’m drawn to its harsh yet stunning and fascinating landscapes and am humbled by the surprisingly abundant and unique life forms which have etched out an existence in this unforgiving environment. Time spent in the world’s oldest desert makes me feel alive and free. I would then head east to neighboring Botswana, and in particular, the Okavango Delta and Linyanti swamps. It’s a place I dreamed of visiting from my childhood and I made this dream come true in the mid 90’s and eventually spent seven years living and guiding there. My time there nurtured me into the guide and in many ways the person I am today. It has the perfect balance of exceptional wildlife, raw bush and the softness of its beautiful wetlands. The quality of wildlife sightings whilst being in vast wilderness with very few other people is hard to match. Last but not least; being able to spend time with the San bushmen, the oldest linguistic group on earth, is like a step back in time, when the human species lived as one with nature 20,000 years ago, just like the rest of the species continue today.

How did you start out in guiding?

Have you ever been really scared on safari?

I wouldn’t necessarily say scared but I’ve had some very tense moments out in the bush which had my heart racing. One moment in particular was with a male leopard in the Okavango Delta. Come on safari and I’ll tell you the story…

What three books do you recommend your guests read before going on safari?

If I had to pick a few books to recommend they would be:

  • The Cry of The Kalahari by Mark and Delia Owens
  • Africa: A Biography of the Continent by John Reader
  • Elephantoms: Tracking the Elephant by Lyall Watson

What are the three most important pieces of kit for guests to bring along?

  • Good pair of binoculars
  • Sense of adventure (I needed a 4th!)

What is your motto in life?

Which rules have you made, which ones do you follow and which rules do you break?

Rules I follow:

  • Never leave guests unattended in a vehicle or anywhere in the bush for that matter for an extended period of time.
  • Patience, Patience, Patience…and once the bush presents you with an opportunity to experience something special, take it and make the most of it!
  • Most importantly, be sensitive to the wildlife we have the privilege of seeing.

Rules I break:

  • What goes on safari stays on safari

What's your most embarrassing or comical moments ever on safari?

It was the first mobile safari I lead in Botswana and we were on an afternoon game drive in the Savuti marsh when I noticed another game drive vehicle moving at high speed. In the national parks where you don’t have radio contact and not much experience under the belt you feel the pressure to show your guests all you can. This typically means that spotting a vehicle driving at high speed one assumes there must be something really good to see. I decided to follow him out of the marsh through the Savuti channel and towards one of the very few hills which occur in the area. I thought maybe a leopard or even lion with cubs as the lions in the area are known to keep their young cubs secluded in amongst these hills. We had about 30 minutes left of light as he reached the base of the hill. I continued following him until the very top where he had stopped. As I neared the top I noticed the guide jumping out of his vehicle and it was at that moment the penny dropped, he had wanted to beat the sunset so he could have a sundowner on top of the hill. Oh dear, you can’t imagine how I felt, and to add to the embarrassment I missed the sunset with my guests as it would have been a “no-no” to gate crash his sundowner.
