Best Safari Parks and Game Reserves Near Port Elizabeth

Best Safari Parks and Game Reserves Near Port Elizabeth

James is a travel writer and author of many Lonely Planet guides, including senior author of the guide to South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland.

South Africa’s southern city of Port Elizabeth (PE) is well located near the eastern end of the Garden Route and a string of malaria-free wildlife reserves, most famously Addo Elephant National Park. Private wildlife reserves  line the N2 highway and other roads between Addo and Grahamstown. These offer a range of wildlife-watching experiences, scenic backdrops, luxurious lodges and conservation programs.

More are found around the Kariega and Bushman’s Rivers inland of Kenton-on-Sea, with river cruises and canoeing on the menu of outdoor activities. Most of the wildlife reserves close to Port Elizabeth have all of the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo), while Addo adds two ocean giants to make the Big Seven.

Safaris From Port Elizabeth

1. Amakhala Game Reserve

White rhinos at Amakhala Game Reserve

Named after the Xhosa for aloes, Amakhala’s 75km²/29mi² of bushveld and savannah offers sightings from the Big Five to elusive animals such as bat-eared foxes and hyenas. Formed by a group of sheep and cattle farmers, whose families had farmed here since the early 1800s, Amakhala has a conservation mission to reintroduce animals to the land where they once roamed freely. Projects initiated by the Amakhala Foundation include a craft center, which you can visit, and volunteering opportunities and ranger training are available. There’s a range of lodges, offering day safaris (from R1,200 per person) and overnight visits, as well as two- to three-hour horse trails (R850 per person).

  • Directions: 75km/46mi northeast of PE via the N2.

2. Addo Elephant National Park

Elephants at Addo Elephant National Park

With most of South Africa’s major national parks found in the country’s northern bush, Addo is a unique treat for wildlife watchers on the southern Sunshine Coast. The country’s third-largest park at almost 2,000km²/772mi², Addo hosts not just the Big Five but the Big Seven (add great white sharks and southern right whales). Most significant are the 600-plus elephants, remnants of the herds that once roamed the Eastern Cape province, which hunting and farming had reduced to 11 individuals in 1931, when the park was established.

There are over 400 Cape buffaloes, one of South Africa’s largest disease-free herds. And also spotted hyenas, pale-rumped Burchell’s zebras, abundant warthogs and the rare flightless dung beetle – park road signs give this nutrient recycler right of way. Addo has good gravel roads and is the world’s most diverse game park according to some estimations. It encompasses five biomes (specific environments: Karoo, grassland, fynbos, thicket and forest), the southern hemisphere’s largest and best-preserved coastal dune field and the world’s largest African penguin and Cape gannet breeding grounds, the Algoa Bay islands. Elephantine indeed.

  • Directions: Addo main gate is 70km/43mi north of PE via the R335 and R342.

Addo Elephant Tours

3. Shamwari Private Game Reserve

Lions at Shamwari Private Game Reserve

Perhaps the most famous of the private game reserves near Port Elizabeth, Shamwari is a 70km²/27mi² conservation project with the Big Five and, like Addo, five of South Africa’s eight biomes. (Nama Karoo, Succulent Karoo, Fynbos, Forest, Thicket, Savanna, Grassland and Desert) Guests can visit the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre and Born Free Big Cat Sanctuaries and choose between six luxurious lodges and the Explorer Camp. Swapping four wheels for a walking safari, the Explorer Camp comprises three tents, an outdoor bathroom and a plunge pool on a plateau amid basalt and granite extrusions.

  • Directions: 80km/50mi northeast of PE via the N2.

Shamwari Tours

4. Schotia Private Game Reserve

Wildlife at Schotia Private Game Reserve

Another gem among the safari parks near Port Elizabeth, Scho t ia is the Eastern Cape’s oldest private wildlife reserve and one of the densest stocked in Africa, with over 40 mammal species among its 2,000 animals. As you will learn on the Tooth & Claw Safari, Schotia was the area’s first reserve to introduce free-roaming lions, evoking the African bush before mankind ruined everything. It has even had to reduce the big cats’ numbers. It offers fantastic day trips from PE, which pair Schotia with a trip around adjacent Addo or an Algoa Bay sea safari, and accommodation from lodges to a tented camp.

  • Directions: 60km/37mi northeast of PE via the N2 and N10.

5. Pumba Private Game Reserve

White and tawny colored lion at Pumba Private Game Reserve

One of the most exclusive game reserves near Port Elizabeth, Pumba’s animal population includes the Big Five, hippos, hyenas, cheetahs, giraffes, 300-plus bird species – and a famous population of rare white and tawny colored split-gene lions. These lions, one of Southern Africa’s only free-ranging, self-sufficient prides, are a result of Pumba’s environmental care and social responsibility mandate. This has also bolstered the leopard population, leading to frequent sightings. There are two luxurious lodges, one of them on Lake Cariega, and activities from day safaris and wilderness walking trails to night drives and spa treatments.

  • Directions: 110km/68mi northeast of PE via the N2.

Pumba Tours

6. Sibuya Game Reserve

Elephants at Sibuya Game Reserve

Checking into Sibuya is a little different: reception is in the coastal village of Kenton-on-Sea, from where the reserve is reached on a 45-minute boat trip up the Kariega River. There are two solar-powered eco-camps with tent accommodation, one tucked into a riverine forest and the other offering meandering walkways through indigenous bush, and a more luxurious lodge. As well as the Big Five, Sibuya’s uniquely navigable river means water-loving wildlife from elephants to otters can be spotted, as can an unbeatable 400 bird species. Canoeing and fishing also make the most of the Kariega, as do day trips to Sibuya.

  • Directions: Kenton-on-Sea is 130km/81mi northeast of PE via the N2 and R72.

Sibuya Tours

7. Lalibela Game Reserve

Cheetah at Lalibela Game Reserve

Lalibela has one of the highest densities of free-roaming lions among the safari parks close to Port Elizabeth, thanks to the 105km²/41mi² reserve’s vast tracts of savannah grassland, where the big cats can hunt huge herds of plains wildlife. Zebras, impalas, wildebeest, red hartebeest, blesbok and eland nervously flick their tails, watching for predators including leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals and lynx. Recognizing that a trio of ingredients makes memorable safari experiences – wildlife watching, accommodation and food – Lalibela’s five lodges have features such as Kichaka’s hippo-frequented waterhole and island dining area.

  • Directions: 90km/56mi northeast of PE via the N2.

Lalibela Tours

8. Kariega Game Reserve

Tawny Eagle at Kariega Game Reserve

This 100km²/39mi² private reserve in the Kenton-on-Sea hinterland incorporates five biomes and both the Kariega and Bushman’s Rivers, creating good chances of spotting a hippo or African fish eagle on the riverbanks. The diverse environments offer a range of activities, including river cruises, canoeing, fishing, bush walks and wildlife drives, and safari lodges in five dreamy locations, from a remote valley to the Bushman’s River. Conservation projects include the Kariega Foundation, a rhino-adoption program and volunteering opportunities.

  • Directions: 145km/90mi northeast of PE via the N2, R72 and R343.

Kariega Tours

9. Kwantu Private Game Reserve

Hippos at Kwantu Private Game Reserve

Kwantu covers 60km²/23mi² of the Sidbury Plains in the heart of Frontier Country, once farmed by the 1820 Settlers from the UK. Indeed, there’s an actual village here, with an Anglican church, tennis courts and a cricket field (the local cricket club dates to the 1890s). Spotting the Big Five is possible, too – on either a day visit (from R1295 per person), with morning and afternoon drives starting at 9 AM and 2 PM respectively, or an overnight stay. The four accommodation options include Kwantu Lodge, overlooking a hippo dam, and the cuisine ranges from traditional South African to Afro-Asian fusion.

  • Directions: 95km/59mi northeast of PE via the N2.

  • 462appletree 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Missed tour due to bad communication Back in Oct, 2023 we signed up for the tour through Into Tours titled Addo Elephant Park Full-day Safari & Shore Excursion from Harbour. It was scheduled for Feb 16, 2023 with a start time of 9 AM with pick-up on the dock for an 8 hour tour. I received a message confirming that we were scheduled. In December I received another message from the provider Janina from Into Tours just thanking us for booking with them. We too were also looking forward to the tour since it was our first time in South Africa. The next communication I received was on Feb. 14. It was a confirmation of our tour. There was no indication that there was a change from our original confirmation. The next morning we were on the dock at 8:45. The provider was not there. I looked at the “what’sapp” application on my phone and saw messages from Janina from that morning saying she tried calling me and and reminding me of the tour. I received a second message saying that the pickup was adjusted to 8:00. Only than did we realize why we missed the tour and that there had been a change made. I looked at the calls on my phone and there were none listed from her. I tried calling the number associated with the confirmation but there was no answer. I’m not sure when the decision was made by Into Tours to change the start time, but sending out a confirmation and not highlighting the change in time is not enough especially when it is the start time of the tour. I've also written the Into Tours requesting a refund. We have also emailed the tour company but still waiting for a response. Star Read more Written March 18, 2024
  • kikingmiguel 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Private Tour in Cape Town "Cape Peninsula Point and Penguins" The highlight of most cruises in the Indian Ocean or Africa ends up in Cape Town, South Africa. If the cruise stays only for a day or 2, it is imperative that a tour in Cape Town must be from locals that are expert in this area. Like in Port Elizabeth, we were very fortunate to engage Into Tours. Janina from Into Tours booked us for a full day Private Tour «Cape Peninsula Point and Penguins». Despite the fact that our cruise ship Norwegian Dawn docked late for an hour and the chaos thereafter when everyone on board wanted to disembark at the same time, Janina made sure that our driver Christian was there for us. After a delay of almost 2 hours, we did the best day-tour ever in South Africa (Camps Bay, Chapman’s Peak Drive, Cape of Good Hope, Cape Point National Park, Boulders Beach with the African Penguins, Bo-kaap, etc. to name a few). Our driver/guide Christian was like a long lost brother to us. We had a magnificent day and had lunch at the Black Marlin Restaurant, however, the saddest part of the whole day-tour was saying goodbye and farewell after he drove us back to the Port Terminal. Book it in advance to secure a place but not in your cruise ship as the price is exorbitant. My wife and I were so fortunate to book the tour with the company Into Tours. Janina was so amazing in handling the booking and making us feel confident that the van waits for us at the port terminal and bring us back on time. Our driver and guide Lizwe is an amazing guy and went out of his way to make sure that our visit at the park is something we can treasure. Indeed we did and it was overwhelming. The company emailed to say they were aware of the problem and said not to panic and they would wait for us. They did and immediately set off they also sent good directions on where to meet them off the ship. The trip was great but due to the heat we only got to see elephants. Got is back to the ship in plenty of time. If we were doing it again the half day would be the one to choose. Eight hours in a van is a long time. Read more Written February 5, 2024

En route to Addo he gave us an insight to the many points of interest we went past. In Addo, he was fabulous, he knew everything there was to know about the wildlife there. • VenturerSydney 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles More than 5 stars - Addo Elephant Park I feel like giving 5 stars doesn’t do our tour justice. Our visit to Addo Elephant Park was simply amazing, guided by the excellent Emanuel. We were picked up promptly from the port and driven out to the park in an air conditioned minivan. We were lucky enough to get a private tour too! Once in the park we saw so many animals! Hundreds of elephants, a rhino (a rare sighting), zebra, ostriches, a buffalo and all sorts of smaller animals too. Emanuel was excellent - he knew where to look for the animals and was knowledgeable and great to talk to. He was also very observant of all the park rules and respectful of the animals. We didn’t see any lions but we were forewarned that they were an unlikely sighting as the park only has 5 of them now. That didn’t detract from the day though because we were able to see so many other animals up close. Lunch was a simple but excellent picnic overlooking an elephant waterhole. After the tour the company continued to take care of us - my son thought he had lost his AirPods (he hadn’t) and the manager double checked the car for us and had suggested they could be dropped back to the ship. Great service! I could not recommend this company more! Read more Written December 11, 2023

TESTIMONIALS

Just returned from our tour to Addo Elephant Park. The best word I can use to describe the experience is “AMAZING”. Highly, highly recomend using Burton Safari Tours. You will not be disappointed.

This was the highlight of our trip. Our guide was so knowledgeable and informative. We will remember this day forever. Thank you Burton Safari Tours.

Thanks Burton for taking my wife and I in your group along the Garden route to Knysna. Had a great day, very informative and friendly. Wouldn’t hesitate to use or recommend your service.

We highly recommend Burton Safari Tours and Shuttle services. Burton really looked after us,  helped us with a tour itinerary and kept in touch months before our trip making sure we were happy with everything and nothing was too much trouble, reliable and caring service. Big thank you from Lynn and Danny, hope all goes well Burton in your cruise season.

Burton A short note to say many thanks for our tour on Sunday, which we thoroughly enjoyed. You were a genial host and a mine of information. We would have no hesitation in recommending your company for a PE visit.

Hi Burton, Thanks for the good laughs your wife will make a good tour operator with a bit of confidence and speak louder! We did the red bus tour in Cape Town. Cruise does not give enough time to see enough of South Africa. Next time I will fly and spend a few weeks by land. See you next time. Keep in Touch.

What a wonderful day. Burton is such a pro. We enjoyed our tour of Addo and the city tour afterwards. Great value, good guiding, good driver and he went several “extra miles” with our various requests. Burton got us back to the ship in plenty of time. We can’t wait to comeback and do some multi day touring with a larger group of friends. Thanks for everything, especially beating all the cruise ship buses to the reserve. Loved the elephants, kudos, zebras, mongoose, ostriches, bongos, warthogs and all!

Port Elizabeth – Gqeberha

Port Elizabeth - Gqeberha is the closest city to Induna Safaris lodge; we are situated about 120kms from PE. We offer day trips to PE, which encompass a variety of activities, depending on each individual’s preference, there is so much to do and see that we sometimes end up going to PE twice!!!

Here are some links below to give you an idea of what PE has to offer. We will then customise a tour for you, and go to the sites that you wish to see.  –  www.nmbt.co.za

Historical Port Elizabeth – Port Elizabeth has a very diverse population, and has been so since its beginning, thus making the history of Port Elizabeth, a treasure chest of different ethic origins. One of the best ways to experience historical PE is to take the Donkin Heritage trail, where 47 places of interest are linked, some of which are:

  • The Campanile- which is a monument erected to commemorate the arrival of British settlers in 1820.
  • The No 7 Castle Hill Museum- where the Victorian era is elegantly preserved and displayed.
  • The Donkin Reserve
  • The Lighthouse Building
  • The City Hall- which was built between the years 1858 and1862, and which demonstrates some spectacular architecture within the city of Port Elizabeth.

This is just mentioning a few of the interesting spots one will be taken to on the tour.

Port Elizabeth has a number of history – rich museums around the city that offer excellent information on the lives that were lived in the old PE. The South End Museum offers one a close up look at the segregation of the ethnic groups within Port Elizabeth when the Apartheid era came into being.

There is also wonderful socio – cultural tours that you can take that are extremely informative with regards to the ethnic groups of PE.

Arts and Cultural – Port Elizabeth has numerous museums and galleries to offer some one wanting a look at the past and present lives of South Africans. You can experience the Xhosa culture in many different ways in PE, but the best experience is to take one of the township tours on offer.

You will be taken into a historically known township, where you will see many traditional sites, and the tour ends off with everyone having a drink one of shebeens – which is what the bars in the townships were called during Apartheid when it was illegal to sell liquor in the townships.

Around the city of PE there are many different centres that have African arts and crafts on display, these range from within shopping centres to roadside hawkers that are often selling very interesting homemade crafts.

The Beaches and Wildlife of Port Elizabeth – The PE area boasts 40km of magnificent beaches. Most of the beaches are fantastic swimming beaches and are patrolled by lifeguards during summer season. On the Maitland side of PE, there are some very spectacular sand dunes that are often used for sand boarding.

Port Elizabeth is home to the Seaview Lion Park, where one gets a chance to get up close to the big cats. If they have cubs at the time, they allow the public to play with them, which can be quite an exciting experience.

Kragga Kama Game Park is also on the outskirts of Port Elizabeth, and this has a great variety of animals, that roam free, but are easily accessible from ones vehicle, one is almost always guaranteed to see the animals.

Port Elizabeth is proud to have its own Oceanarium, where they have daily dolphin shows, and many other aquatic life on display. Next door to this they also have a reptile park, which has recently been re opened.

Shopping and Entertainment – PE offers her visitors a wide selection of shopping options. There are a few magnificent shopping centres, with a large variety of shops and food malls. You could choose to do your shopping in outdoors in the outside markets, where one can buy fresh produce, and many different kinds of African crafts, all sorts of goodies to have a look at.

At the Boardwalk on the Beach front there is a Casino, which is surrounded by restaurants, bars and a cinema.

Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha)

Port Elizabeth Gqerberha

This Port Elizabeth guide will give you the scoop on the coastal city in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Port Elizabeth is one of the major cities of South Africa and lies 770 km west of Cape Town. It is a sea port city (hence the name) with a busy harbor and stretches along Algoa bay.

PE is a popular vacation location within South Africa, thanks to mean things like the friendly people and being quite likely the cleanest city in South Africa. In South Africa, PE is also called the friendly city, and is known for its laid back vibes and alternative culture.

Table of Contents

Getting To Port Elizabeth

To make it to PE, as a tourist you will likely be flying in from one of the major cities like Johannesburg or Cape Town at Dawid Stuurman International Aiport (Formerly known as PE International Airport). Thankfully, the airport is within a mere 6km or 10 minute drive of the popular traveler destinations in the Summerstrand region and the city centre.

PE is also small enough that if you do not want to drive, it is affordable to Uber around. If you want to drive, you can rent car through a rental company like Avis which are all available at the airport.

Notable Suburbs Of Port Elizabeth

Summerstrand.

PE has a range of suburbs, but the main one that most tourists will go to is Summerstrand. This the main one and it is peppered with exclusive apartments and the gem of Port Elizabeth, Brookes Hill Drive with views of the ocean.

The Garden Court Hotel is also a prominent feature of the Summerstrand/Humewood area. Summerstrand is the crown jewel of Port Elizabeth. It offers the same seaside luxuries as those found in the best cities but is much more affordable compared to Cape Town.

Summerstrand Port Elizabeth

If you want a more inland location to frequent, Walmer is it. In contrast to the beach island feel of coastal suburbs like Summerstrand, Walmer is more homely. So if you are looking to stay in Port Elizabeth over a longer period and under a more “normal” setting, it is a good option. You can get the same level of accommodation as what can be found along marine drive, but a little bit more affordable as you are avoiding the extra cost that comes with ocean views and sea spray.

Note, however, that there are two sides of Walmer – Upper Walmer and Lower Walmer.  The one you are looking for, Upper Walmer, is the affluent part of Walmer which is located North of the M9 highway. Lower Walmer is to the south of the highway and that is where things can get a little dicey.

Lovemore Heights

Lovemore Heights is one of the most sought after suburbs in Port Elizabeth located on the western edge of the city. It is home to an upper middle class population and on certain street, boasts some of the best views over the western suburbs of Gqeberha all the way up to the Indian Ocean.

St George’s Park

Saint George’s Park is another of the popular suburbs. The key place is near the gorge where apartments in the area have a magnificent view over the valley. Saint George’s Park is also near to the Cricket Stadium, where you can catch games on a weekend afternoon.

Where To Stay in Port Elizabeth

Port Elizabeth has a great selection of places where you can stay Whether you are looking for 5 start hotel accommodation or a cosy guest house away from the activity, you can find it there. The most popular location is the Sun International boardwalk Casino and Hotel. Check out our list of best hotels in Port Elizabeth to see our top choices of accommodation.

There are a couple of locations where you can get your retail therapy in Port Elizabeth. If you in the Marine Drive area near Summerstrand and Humewood, there is the Board Walk Casino complex. This is an entertainment complex with run by the Sun International group with a shopping mall, casino, and 5 Star accommodation.

In 2022, the complex was renovated and the new Board Walk mall was built there, and quickly became one of the most popular destinations in the Summerstrand area. And best of all, it is all walking distance from Hobie beach.

Boardwalk Mall Port Elizabeth

There are also other smaller shopping centres in the area of summerstrand and some impressive malls in other suburbs of Port Elizabeth.

Things To Do in Port Elizabeth

Marine Drive is where all the fun is. There are a great selection of restaurants along this street. My personal favourite is the Cubana in Humewood that is set against the ocean backdrop as well as a swimming pool right outside of the tent area. It really gives you that beach bar feel like no other place in PE does. Here are some other nice locations that you can check out:

Port Elizabeth:  City Sightseeing and Guided Safari Tour

Hobie Beach

Hobie Beach is easily the most popular (and really the best) beach in Port Elizabeth. The beach has achieved blue flag status and offers swimming and water sports like surfing and canoeing. The location hosts a multitude of events throughout the year that range from the annual Splash festival, to boating and Ironman championships.

Best of all, the beach is within walking distance of all the best destinations along marine drive and the boardwalk. So if you are staying at the Boardwalk Casino Complex, you can take a leisurely stroll to the beach and back.

Hobie Beach Port Elizabeth Travel Guide

The Roof Bar Garden

The Roof Bar Garden is a roof top bar with the skyline of Port Elizabeth’s bay side as a backdrop. It is the hip and happening place to be in PE. Cocktails and craft beer are served while you enjoy live music and great food. Whether during the day or for an after work drink, it is a nice place to unwind. The bar is located in PE Central at 33 Winston Ntshona Street. The venue is semi-open, with a covered area for events or when it rains. From a jazz event to a poetry evening, it is the perfect hangout spot for an alternative vibe.

Valley Market / Goodnight Market

These markets are hosted once a month at the Tramways building in South End, Port Elizabeth. The Goodnight Market is hosted on select Thursday nights from 5pm to 9pm, and offers goers artisanal food and craft products. Entrance to the event is R20 per person and all proceeds from entrance fee go to charity so you can feel good about helping out while having fun.

Specific info on when the event is held can be found on the Facebook Page . The Valley Market runs on the first Saturday of every month and focuses on fresh produce and family fun. Particulars for the Valley Market can be found on their Twitter page.

Goodnight Market

Sardinia Bay

Sardinia Bay is a very nice beach to visit that is hidden away from the main beaches that can get busy at times. It is not totally secluded and sees a fair amount of visitors. There are also people selling ice creams at concession stands that you can buy from. It is the perfect little hideaway to give a visit.

Splash Waterworld

Splash Waterworld is one of the most popular visitor’s destinations in PE. It is also an iconic landmark on the PE Waterfront, and no video of PE is complete without it. It is the ideal spot for the whole family to have fun. There is a variety of water activities, super tubes and slides for both adults and children. You can bring your own chairs and braai facilities are available. There is also attentive staff on hand to watch over the kids. A tip is to bring an umbrella or a gazebo as it can get quite hot and shade is limited.

Splash Waterworld Port ElizabethTravel Guide

Operating hours are from 10am to 4:30 on school weekdays if the weather permits. The place only operates in the summer so if it is one of your intended locations, you might want to plan your holiday around it and visit during the warmer months. These months run from late September, to the end of April every year.

Hidden Gems in Port Elizabeth

When you are in PE, there is a lot more to see than just Marine Drive and the city centre. In fact, some of the best places to visit as a traveller are away from all of the hustle and bustle.

A prime example of this is the Grass Roof. Located in Lovemore Park nearer the Sardinia area, this is a chic restaurant that blends awesome dining with the outdoors. As the name suggests, it is a rustic-inspired eatery that blends into its countryside environment. The food there is easily one of the best in Port Elizabeth and it is one you should not miss.

The restaurant is quite popular with tons of rave reviews, so we might be stretching the definition of “hidden” gem with this one, but it is definitely one to check out if you are in Gqeberha.

One of the true hidden gems of Port Elizabeth is the seaside village of Seaview. If you like going off the beaten path and away from the hustle and bustle of the city, this is the perfect place to go. The village is located just 30 minutes out of the city in an area known as Clarendon Marine.

Seaview boasts the most beautiful azure waters accompanied by rock formations with small natural pools that make it a perfect place for snorkelling. Many PE locals often come here during the weekend for some fishing or to get away from it all. If you are peckish, there are two restaurants in the area, namely BluVibes, which is a new one right at the entrance of Seaview from the East, and Barnacles, which is a well-established restaurant with some of the best views and is located on the western end of Seaview.

Safaris In Port Elizabeth

There are also some nice wild retreats and popular tourist attractions that are in or close to PE. If you want to excape from the city and get in touch with your wild side, you can visit some of these.

Addo Elephant National Park

Addo Elephant National Park is one of South Africa’s national parks, and the third largest after Kruger National Park and Kgalafadi Tranfrontier Park. The park was initially built as an elephant preservation sanctuary, which it achieved with much successs. It is now home to over 600 elephants and a wide range of other mammals that include over 400 Cape Buffaloes, 48 Black Rhinos, and even lions. There is chalet accommodation with swimming pools and other facilities for visitors to stay in.

Addo Elephant National Park

Kragga Kamma Game Park

Kragga Kamme is a game reserve that is home to a vast herds of African game, including White Rhino, Buffalo, Cheetah, Giraffe, Zebra and many more. You can take a drive in your own vehicle and view the game at your leisure. If you really want to get close to the animals, they have a 2-hour guided tour with a professional ranger who will guide visitors and give wonderful tidbits on information about the animals and the environment.

Port Elizabeth Weather

Port Elizabeth is also often called the Windy City of South Africa, because of the winds that blow along the Algoa Bay. Temperatures during the Summer and Spring are warm but frequently windy, especially near the coast. Winters are cold all around with rain being common. You will also find that some of the popular traveler events and destinations might close during the winter period (such as the Water Park).

Is Port Elizabeth Safe?

Port Elizabeth is relatively safe compared to other popular cities in South Africa like Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. That being said, you should exercise common sense and caution as you would in any other city in the world. There are also places in PE that are not as safe as other, such as low income areas and the city centre. The basic rules for safety, anywhere in the wold is to not walk around streets at night or in isolated places.

When to visit Port Elizabeth?

The best time to visit PE is Summer, hands down. The cold in winter can get quite unbearable and many events choose to close or ramp down during the cold seasons. People tend to stay indoors during winter so you you might miss the friendly spirit that the city is known for.
