From the Lion King to Toto's "Africa" to countless episodes of Planet Earth, there's a reason the Serengeti draws so much attention – it's one of the most epic destinations in the world. Here, you can set out across the endless grasslands on an unforgettable safari to spot the sought-after Big Five and other iconic African greats like giraffes, cheetahs and hippos. Serengeti safari highlights

A glowing orange sunset over grasslands dotted with umbrella trees in the Serengeti

Marvel at never-ending plains

The wide-open plains of the Serengeti are one of the most recognizable African landscapes. Think endless grasslands dotted with umbrella trees and set beneath a backdrop of the towering Mount Kilimanjaro. The name Serengeti is thought to have come from the Maasai word "siringit", which means the place where the land moves on forever. It's impossible to get it...until you do. Watching the sun set over grasslands that appear to stretch to the edges of the earth is an experience you won't soon forget.

An adult elephant and two babies cross the plains of the Serengeti

Wave ''hi'' to the Big Five

Serengeti National Park is renowned for its wildlife, and clocking in at over 5,500 sq. miles, there are plenty of predators in residence. From the safety of your vehicle, keep your eyes peeled for Africa's iconic Big Five: lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards and buffalo. Some animals, like the endangered black rhino, can be elusive, and many are active at different times of day, so both early morning and late afternoon game drives are on the itinerary, giving you the best chance of spotting as many species as possible.

Zebra and wildebeest kick up dust as they thunder across the plains

Witness the Great Migration

The Great Migration is one of the world's most spectacular displays of wildlife. Between April and May, over two million wildebeest, plus herds of zebras and antelope, travel across the Serengeti in search of water and greener pastures as the dry season sets in. The animals thunder across the panoramic plains and through rivers — an impressive sight you won't witness elsewhere in Africa.

A welcome sign one of the entrances of Serengeti National Park is adorned with an animal skull

Be a good neighbor

Many of the campsites within the Serengeti are fenceless, meaning you'll have no separation between yourself and the animals. After sundown, you may experience buffalo and hyenas sniffing curiously around your tent, which is quite the experience. Don't worry, though; our experienced local leaders will give a detailed safety briefing, and you'll come to enjoy falling asleep to the ambient sounds of your wildlife neighbors.

When's the best time to go on a safari in the Serengeti?

The Serengeti is located in Tanzania and has fairly consistent, moderate temperatures year-round, with cool mornings and evenings and not-too-hot days, making for a fantastic year-round safari destination. While there are technically two rainy seasons, the “short rains” from November to December and the “long rains” from March to May, rains usually consist of a once-daily thunderstorm, and rarely a total washout.

Read more about the best time to go on safari .

Am I guaranteed to see animals?

We can’t guarantee you’ll spot the Big 5, but you’d have to be seriously unlucky to see no animals at all. On our safaris, you’ll explore some of the best game parks and national reserves in the world. These protected areas are filled with a huge variety of species and your expert driver and local leader will be on hand to point you in the right direction (literally).

What are the "Big Five"?

The “Big 5” used to refer to the five big game animals that were the most difficult to hunt. Now that most shooting is done on a camera, the Big 5 are the most exciting animals to spot while on safari: the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo.

What should I pack for a Serengeti safari?

Loose, light layers in neutral colors are the best attire for a safari (dark colors will get hot in the sun and can attract the Tsetse fly). You’ll also want a sun hat, some good walking shoes, a camera, sunscreen and bug spray. For more details, check out our  ultimate Africa packing guide .

What type of food will be served on a Serengeti safari?

It depends on the trip style you've chosen. On our Basix trips, you’ll have a cook traveling with you who'll whip up a variety of local and Western-style dishes. Along your route, your cook will stop to purchase fresh, locally sourced food for your meals. You can expect a variety of things for breakfast like fruit, eggs, toast and cereal; lunch is often sandwiches and salads; and dinner is usually a hearty meal like pasta, curry or a BBQ.

On our Original and Comfort trips there'll be more meals at camps and lodges along the way. One thing's for sure: you definitely won't be going hungry on safari!

What are the toilets and showers like on safari?

Most of the permanent tented camps will have private bathrooms with flushing toilets and showers with warm water.

Many of the campsites we stay at have communal facilities with flushing toilets and showers with warm water. However, in some of the more remote areas, there may only be basic facilities (toilets and cold running water).

Will I be able to use my cell phone on safari?

Some of our hotels and campsites will have Wi-Fi, however, internet and phone access may be limited in more remote areas. But you won’t think twice about emails and social media when you’re watching a pride of lions prowl through long grass or enjoying a drink around the campfire with your group.

Are Intrepid's Serengeti safaris accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel accessible to everyone, so we will work with you to assess whether you will be able to complete an existing itinerary, or whether we will be able to make reasonable adjustments to meet your needs before you book. Please see our  accessible travel page  for more information.

The Serengeti is, in our opinion, the finest game reserve in Africa. A vast and stunningly beautiful wilderness with its open and grassy plains occasionally broken up by isolated granite koopjes and areas of acacia woodland.

The parks sheer volume of game is without comparison anywhere – a high predator (lion, cheetah and leopard) population throughout with the annual migration (see below) of over two million wildebeest and half a million zebra moving almost continuously through the park.

With so much to see and enjoy the Serengeti does attract a large number of visitors which can, in certain areas, affect the quality of your encounters with animals. However if a Tanzania safari is well planned it is easy to get away from the crowds and enjoy the highest quality wilderness experience.

There is real mix of lodges and camps within the park and we can help you in making the right choice. One of the most important criteria is to match the right location within the park for the time of year in order to experience the best possible game-viewing.

These are our preferred camps options within the different regions and the best months to visit:

Mobile Tented Camps – All year These wonderful camps follow the movement of the wildebeest migration within the Serengeti throughout the year. We would recommend these camps as the first choice at any time of year. Luxury: Olakira Tented Camp, Nomad Serengeti Camp Mid range: Simuyu Tented Camp

Southern Plains – January to March Luxury: Kusini Tented Camp Mid range: Lake Masek Tented Camp, Ndutu Lodge Basic: Olduvai Tented Camp

Central Serengeti – All year Luxury: Dunia Camp, Kempinski Bilia Lodge Mid range : Mbuzi Mawe Camp Basic: Ronjo Camp

Western Corridor & Grumeti Reserves – May & June Luxury: Grumeti River Camp, Faru Faru Lodge

Northern Serengeti – July to November Luxury: Sayari Mara Camp Basic: Lobo Lodge

When is the best time to see the Great Migration in Serengeti?

On your Serengeti Safaris. “The migration through the Serengeti follows a reasonably predictable annual cycle, but there is also variation from one year to the next, dependent mainly on the rainfall. If you are looking to see a horizonless column of braying wildebeest on the move, aim for the Western Corridor in late May to June, when the migration heads towards the south bank of the Grumeti River before crossing it, usually in early July.

Game Drives in Serengeti

Game Drives in Serengeti

More reliable for river crossings is the far north of the park over August to October when herds of several hundred or a few thousand make the treacherous crossing from one side of the Mara River to the other with logic-defying regularity. Over December to April, the wildebeest disperse into the southeast Serengeti , which is the most accessible part of the park from Arusha, but might still be seen in herds that stretch from one horizon to the other. These southeastern plains are the main wildebeest calving grounds, with peak calving season usually centered on February, a phenomenon that attracts high predator concentrations.”

Serengeti National Park. The National Park, and wildlife refuge on the Serengeti Plain in north-central Tanzania . It is partly adjacent to the Kenya border and is northwest of the adjoining Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

What animals can I expect to see on Serengeti Safari?

“The Serengeti is great when it comes to both variety and volume of wildlife. Over the course of a typical Serengeti safari, you can expect to see lions on a daily basis, and with luck, you will also encounter a host of other carnivores including leopard (most common around Seronera), cheetah, spotted hyena, black-backed jackal, golden jackal, and bat-eared fox. You might also be lucky enough to see secretive nocturnal creatures such as civet, serval, genet, and African wildcat. Also certain to be seen on Serengeti tours are elephant, buffalo, giraffe, hippo, plains zebra, wildebeest, Thomson’s gazelle, Grant’s gazelle, impala, Coke’s hartebeest, and warthog. The localized patas monkey and black-and-white colobus are both residents in the Western Corridor. The black rhino is scarce and more likely to be seen in Ngorongoro Crater . Around 550 bird species have been recorded, among them the endemic grey-throated spurfowl, Fischer’s lovebird, Rufous-tailed Weaver, Usambiro barbet, and grey-crested helmet-shrike. The open plains are good for terrestrial giants such as ostrich, kori bustard, secretary bird, and southern ground hornbill.”

On your Serengeti Safari in Tanzania. “Coming directly from Arusha, it is around 300km to the park headquarters at Seronera .

Seronera - Serengeti

Serengeti National Park Main Gate

The first half of this drive follows the same surfaced road that runs past Lake Manyara to the main eastern entrance of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) . The second follows a rough and dusty corrugated track around the Ngorongoro Crater rim and western plains of the NCA. Allow at least six hours for the full drive, and ideally a full day. Note, however, that most Serengeti tours include overnight stops at Lake Manyara and/or Ngorongoro Crater, which helps to break up the trip.”

“By any sensible international standards, the roads are terrible. It’s not a problem when you are on a relaxed game drive, but it can be tough going on longer drives between lodges and camps. If this sounds daunting, or you have a vulnerable back, think about booking a Serengeti Safari Package that includes flights into the park and between lodges and camps.”

What lodges or camps would you recommend on Serengeti Safaris?

“If your budget runs to it, there are some superb exclusive small lodges and tented camps scattered around the Serengeti Safari Park. I tend to favor places with a more remote crowd-beating location. Sanctuary Kusini Camp, set among massive boulders in the far south, offers superb wildlife-viewing during February and March; the semi-permanent Dunia Camp near Moru Koppies offers excellent wildlife viewing all year, peaking from December to March; the super-stylish &Beyond Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp is easily the pick of the lodges in the western corridor, where wildlife activity peaks from May to July; and there’s not much to separate Lamai Serengeti and Sayari Camp, which are the two most exclusive properties in the far north, and ideally placed to catch wildebeest river crossings from August to October. Of the more mid-range options, Ndutu Safari Lodge, a low-key, family-owned set-up overlooking the eponymous seasonal lake, is great value and offers superb predator viewing from December to April.”

What is Serengeti famous for?

Serengeti Safaris – The Serengeti is famed for its annual wildebeest migration, when some 8 million hooves cross the open plains, as more than 1,500,000 wildebeest, 200,000 zebra, and 300,000 Thomson’s gazelle join the trek for fresh grazing. Predators follow the migration and sightings of big cats hunting is particularly exciting. Serengeti is one of the world’s oldest ecosystems. Serengeti National Park is one of the only fewer places where you can witness the unaltered natural animal migration in the world. Large herds of grazers that move in pursuit of fresh pastures and water for their survival have made tourists describe it as the greatest wildlife sighting on earth. The large mammal grazers with over one million wildebeest, thousands of zebras and gazelles, move through the Serengeti annually in search of food and breeding grounds

A Safari in Serengeti is very safe in our opinion. Crime within Tanzania’s parks and reserves are very rare. You’ll always need to take normal safety precautions (as you would anywhere) in cities and towns as this is where incidents like petty theft can happen.

How many days do you need to Safari Serengeti?

Serengeti Safaris – The Serengeti has wide plains and a vast diversity of wildlife. At least a full four days on a game drive will allow you to watch and observe the animals without the experience being rushed.

Can you see Kilimanjaro from the Serengeti?

For one thing, Kilimanjaro doesn’t rise above the Serengeti. You can’t even see it from the Serengeti unless you get in a hot air balloon and take a telescope: they’re about 300 kilometers from each other. Kilimanjaro rises above the Tsavo (see picture). And Mount Olympus definitely doesn’t rise above the Serengeti.

How much does it cost to go on Serengeti Safari?

Most notably, the National park entry fees for the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater are higher than for other Tanzanian national parks. The Serengeti Park is after all (arguably) Africa’s most legendary safari destination and thus Tanzania’s top tourist destination, whilst Ngorongoro Crater is world-renowned for its abundant wildlife and archaeological significance.

Is Kenya or Tanzania safari better?

So in general, Tanzania is more affordable while Kenya has a better travel infrastructure. … Kenya has the larger tourism infrastructure and has more lodges to accommodate globetrotters heading on an African safari, so the cost of a safari in Kenya will likely be less than one in Tanzania.

Can you self drive Serengeti?

Can I explore the Serengeti on a self drive safari? Yes , you certainly can! The Serengeti is probably the most rewarding game park in the world. However, it’s also a park best enjoyed when you’ve prepared well in advance.

Serengeti vs Masai Mara Safari

Basically, there’s no one better than the other here, both Serengeti and Masai Mara are amazing safari destinations. Masai Mara is probably slightly more concentrated (year-long) from a wildlife point-of-view, but Serengeti has mind-blowing vastness

Serengeti is more of an open terrain and is best for viewing lions, while Kruger is denser and is better for viewing elephants. The Kruger is home to the important black rhino; however, this endangered grazer can also be seen from the Ngorongoro Crater to the Serengeti.

How do I book to a Affordable Serengeti Safari?

Affordable Serengeti Safaris are something that everyone should experience at least once a life time. Serengeti Safari offers the chance to let go of the pressures of everyday life and embrace instead the primal call of the wild.

The Serengeti

The serengeti sets the stage for the great migration – when close to 2 million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle make their way across the endless grasslands in search of greener pastures..

This theatre for the largest terrestrial mammal migration on Earth stretches from the Ngorongoro Highlands in the south, to Kenya’s Masai Mara in the north. Around 30,000km2 in size, the Serengeti National Park is flanked on all sides by special conservation areas, including the Grumeti Game Reserve and Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

The herds are a magnet for large predators from lion and cheetah tp leopard and hyena, so there are many opportunities for intense wildlife sightings. Many safari camps in the north are also situated close to crocodile-filled rivers, which the wildebeest must cross at their own peril.

All of the “Big 5” can also be found on the Serengeti’s sun-baked savanna plains, so even when the wildebeest have left the area, there is plenty of permanent game to see. Most lodges and camps offer game drives in 4WD vehicles, with a select few providing the opportunity to explore on foot or by hot air balloon. Various properties also have excellent fun yet educational programs for children, so mum and dad can completely relax and enjoy their holiday.

The semi-nomadic Maasai tribespeople are often seen living in harmony with the Serengeti’s wildlife, herding their cattle as they have for hundreds of years. We can arrange community visits for an insight into their traditional way of life. There are also various interesting archaeological sites to discover in northern Tanzania, such as Olduvai Gorge where hominid fossils have been found.

  • Intense predator action

When is the best time to visit the Serengeti?

Tanzania is a true year-round safari destination. The wildebeest migration mass on the short grass plains of the southern and eastern Serengeti from November to May, moving towards the western corridor towards June as the rains finish. From July to September, the herds head north into Kenya’s Masai Mara. In October, the skies open once more so the animals return to the short grass plains.

Serengeti Safaris

Situated in Northern Tanzania is the oldest, most popular national park is the world-famous Serengeti . The park itself has the distinction of being a UNESCO world heritage site.  Boasting almost 6000 square miles of grassland plains and savanna, punctuated by the occasional acacia tree or scattered bushes, the Serengeti gives visitors the feeling of having landed in ‘authentic’ Africa.

The name Serengeti means ‘the infinite plains’ in the indigenous Maasai language. The savanna stretches to the north, where rolling grasslands are replaced by acacia woodlands, expands to the shores of Lake Victoria and to the east across the Kenyan border, where it continues by the name of Masai Mara National Reserve , forming the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem.

THE GREAT MIGRATION:

Serengeti Map

The first and most imperative question of all visitors is: ‘when is the great migration?’. Well, this is nature at work and of course such questions are not so easily answered. First of all, the migration is a cycle, repeating itself endlessly year after year. The time of migration depends on the annual seasons, the two rainy and the two dry seasons and is all about finding food and water, whilst at the same time replenishing and fertilizing the grasslands on their trail.

From December to early April, Wildebeests and other herbivores graze in small groups all over the park. Around January or February (but no guarantees!), after the synchronized birthing process of the wildebeest in the southernmost parts of the Serengeti, a feast for predators starts, as suddenly, about half a million rather defenseless wildebeest calves are born and placed at their disposal.

The main stars of the migration are the approximately 1.5 million white bearded wildebeest, mixed up with hundreds of thousands of other ungulates like zebras, Thomson gazelles, and eland antelopes. This huge moving food chain, of course, attracts the predators: mighty lions, exquisite leopards, and elegant cheetahs. In turn, all are surveyed from high in the sky by naked-necked vultures, waiting for the leftovers and to fight for them with the ever-present packs of ungainly and sinister laughing hyenas.

The migration is both brutal and awesome – a feast and a mourning in one.

A few weeks after the birthing season, when the infinite green grass carpet turns into a bright golden-brown, more and more animals gather into vast herds, ready to form an up to 30 miles long trek. Amazingly, the route is engraved into the animals DNA, and at first, the animals wander northwest – towards the rain – in search of fresh green grass. They then continue to the area near the acacia woodlands of Lake Victoria and through the western Serengeti corridor, where sometime between April and June the annual rut takes place. In less than a month hundreds of thousands of Wildebeests are mating, and so goes the pilgrimage.

The migration is not without its obstacles. Along the way are several rivers to cross, the first being the Grumeti River, where gigantic meat hungry Nile crocodiles lie in wait for their share.  Most of the year these rivers are calm, even dry, but when the heavy thunderstorm-like tropical rainfalls start, they turn into deadly traps. Not only because of the crocs, but also due to the raging torrents, which always claim a good number of lives. Dense vegetation by the river banks also provides perfect hiding places for predators of all kind. They are also there, because they can read the signs and, as with the migratory animals, the grand event is engraved in their DNA. Cutting across the border into Kenya, the animals enter the even more dangerous territory.

Maasai Mara has the densest population of predators known, and quite a number will fall prey to them.  Others die from thirst, hunger, and exhaustion, according to nature’s cruel law of the ‘survival for the fittest.’

The last major hurdle is the Mara River, where thousands and thousands of herbivores gather, sometimes for days, until the whole incredible picture is filled with grey bodies and long clownish faces reaching to the horizon. Observing the Wildebeests the visitor will witness procrastination as they smell danger, repeated checking for the best crossing point and what appears to be animals waiting for the whistle to blow as the sheer pressure builds up. Leaping forwards, turning back, another attempt, but no, not yet, the pattern repeats until the first wildebeest hero takes heart and plunges into the troubled river water. This daring plunge initiates a mass stampede – as the Wildebeests push, pull and fight their way through the turbulent waters. Tragedies occur when crocodiles strike and when the river bank is steep and slippery as some animals are unable to find their grip, leading them to be washed away by the seasonal wild waters, finally drowning from fatigue – or having succeeded in a new attempt, and maybe hitting a lioness’s ambush.

While the animals engage in their eternal struggles and victories, several camps and lodges by the river shore allow visitors to catch the spectacle comfortably from their safari chairs with a chilled drink in their hand.

Until sometime in October, the animals take a rest in the Mara, then start their passage back to the Serengeti.

OUTSIDE THE GREAT MIGRATION

Even if the visitor misses the drama of the Great Migration, Serengeti has a lot more on offer and is a perfect all year destination.  All over the wild and wide open spaces, animals are abundant.

Serengeti is home to big game, namely the famous ‘Big Five’ as listed below;

More than 3000 lions are found throughout the Serengeti, whereas the approximately 1000 leopards prefer the Seronera river region where they can be seen basking in flat-topped acacia trees. Herds of elephants populate the northern park areas, while the ruthlessly poached, highly endangered black and white rhinos are found around the kopjes, head shaped rock formations in the park center. Buffalos are still abundant and populate the entire area in herds of differing sizes.

Small game includes cheetahs, particularly in the southeastern plains; all three species of African jackals; beautifully patterned serval cats; hyrax and pythons around the kopjes; uncountable herbivores like giraffes, Grant gazelles, topi, impala, Coke’s hartebeest, Kongoni, oryx, dik-dik pairs and so many others.  And if this is not enough, the visitor can watch baboons, vervet monkeys, porcupines, honey badgers, and mongoose just to mention a few of the hundreds of species populating the plains.

Insectivorous aardvark and aardwolf, bush babies, gorillas, and nocturnal bat-eared foxes, but be aware that these are rarely spotted unless on a night game drive.

Serengeti is a bird lover’s paradise and home to an extensive avian population of over 500 species, from the gigantic ostrich to crested eagles, martial eagles, majestic crowned cranes, colorful kingfishers, different hornbill species, glossy starlings, down to the little vibrant nectar sucking sunbirds.

HISTORY, CONSERVATION, AND PEOPLE

Since time immemorial, the people of the Maasai, one of Africa’s most famous tribes, have herded their essential cattle in the Serengeti plains. The Maasai are a semi-nomadic people of Nilotic ethnicity.  Wearing their trademark red cloths, or ‘shuka,’ the young boys used to wander the endless land with their sacred cow herds, learning survival in the wild and gathering knowledge about herbs and remedies, before their introduction to manhood. The traditional circumcision ceremony, taking place every 15 years or so, serves to initiate the boys into their new status of being Moran, that is, young warriors.

The men’s hair is artfully plaited and twisted, then dyed with a mixture of natural ocher and cow fat, whereas the women are mainly bald, sporting amazing beadwork jewelry and beaded neck rings, which are handed over to the girls as part of their family heritage.

With colonization came the white hunters, who over-exploited the rich fauna of the Serengeti grasslands, shooting countless lions, buffalos, elephants, rhinos and in fact whatever they came across with their rifles.

Seeing the lion population diminishing, the British administration declared part of the area a game reserve in 1921. In 1951 the park we know to date was established; a process in which the famous German zoo director and conservationist Bernhard Grzimek played a significant role. Grzimek succeeded in catching the attention of the world for this ecosystem, after his book and film “Serengeti shall not die,” one of the world’s first environmental documentaries, were published and screened worldwide.

Since the late fifties of the last century, when the Maasai were evicted from the area and re-settled in the likewise leading safari destination, the Ngorongoro crater, and conservation area, human habitation is forbidden inside the park.

Sadly, the area continues to face severe threats up to the present day. The Tanzanian and the Kenyan governments repeatedly plan to build a four-lane highway cutting through Serengeti and Maasai Mara, jeopardizing one of the greatest annual animal spectacles, the Great Migration, one of the “Seven New Wonders of the World.”  Crucially, this migration makes the Serengeti the world’s most famous safari destination. A global outcry amongst environmentalists stopped the ambitious but destructive plans, but even so, the project concept is taken out of government drawers every few years and re-considered.

HOW TO GET THERE

Most visitors arrive with an organized safari tour, by chartered planes or in safari vehicles.  Scheduled flights are available from different Tanzanian airports. When traveling in a private or rental car, it is advisable, to keep track with one of the organized safari cars, because the drivers know their way and they are always in contact, telling each other where the action is.

Prefer the bird’s eye perspective? Upmarket lodges and luxurious camps offer fantastic hot air balloon sunrise safaris, which end with a lavish champagne breakfast in the wilderness. An excellent honeymoon idea and an experience never to be forgotten.

AND LASTLY… WHY YOU SHOULD GO….

The Serengeti is doubtlessly Tanzania’s best park to visit. Apart from the world famous great migration, which is quite unpredictable in route and timing, there is abundant and exclusive fauna and flora to watch. The magical Serengeti is a highly recommended location for top-class wildlife spotting, accessible throughout the year.

Safari Holidays: 7 Days in the Serengeti and the Seychelles

From the bush to the beach, this unique itinerary delivers the best of eastern africa..

There’s something mystical about being in the Serengeti, surrounded by a striking silence that’s interrupted only by the wind whistling through your hair, or the roar of a lion in the distance. A short distance away, another untamed paradise awaits. Leave the vast calm of the Serengeti for an island adventure in the Seychelles, a remote archipelago blessed with pristine beaches and lush jungles—the perfect location to complete your holiday in Africa.

A few days on safari followed by an indulgent stay on the beach is the classic African holiday pairing. Experience these two distinct facets of the continent through the seven-day Safari Unplugged itinerary, set in two of the most picturesque Four Seasons retreats. Follow a stint at the luxurious Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti  in Serengeti National Park with some pampering on the beach at Four Seasons Resort Seychelles : From otherworldly Tanzanian sunrises to kaleidoscopic Indian Ocean sunsets, a Serengeti-and-Seychelles sojourn showcases Eastern Africa at her best.

Day one: Stalking the Big Five in the Serengeti

Serengeti Big Five - Elephants

On African safari, the big five are the must-see animals. Lion, elephant, rhino, leopard and buffalo abound in Serengeti National Park.

The drive from the airstrip to Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti is an adventure in itself: “The 45-minute transfer through the park can sometimes turn into a two-hour game drive. It’s not uncommon to see three or four of the Big Five [lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, rhino] before guests have even reached the lodge,” says Oliver Dreike, manager of the Lodge Discovery Centre. “If migration is under way, it might take even longer—lines and lines of wildebeest cross the road, creating natural roadblocks along the way.”

Once at the Lodge, soothe your weary bones at the Spa , where the signature Kifaa massage incorporates Tanzanian baobab oil to help you re-energise. If there’s still time before your afternoon game drive, go for a dip in the infinity pool overlooking the watering hole—you might even see a few animals from the pool.

Then embark on a thrilling quest to track wildlife in their natural environment. While the famed plains of the Serengeti are aglow in the late-afternoon sun, your skilled guide will point out animals you didn’t even realise were lurking nearby and share personal experiences that will give you a new-found appreciation for the natural realm.

End your evening with a buffet dinner at the Boma Grill , an open-air firepit where you’ll feast on grilled meats and fish or a Zanzibar lobster curry.

Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, Tanzania

Day two: exploration on the savannah.

Watching the first rays of daylight trickle across the African wilderness as you thrash through the bush on a quest for a wildlife sighting is one of the most meditative experiences you’ll ever have. For a comprehensive vantage point, begin the day with a hot-air balloon safari at dawn.

Once back on solid ground, enjoy breakfast on the savannah before returning to the Lodge, where a visit to the Discovery Centre , the place to learn about the Maasai people and the surrounding wildlife and history, is a must. Stretch your legs with an afternoon guided walking safari to get a closer perspective on the animals than you did in the morning, then end the day with a sunset meditation experience at the Spa.

Day three: Follow the migration

Four Seasons Serengeti Bush Dining

Dining in the Serengeti is a first-class affair during the Bush Dining experience.

Get up bright and early the next morning for an all-day game drive that will take you farther afield than you’ve travelled thus far. Staff will pack you a picnic lunch before you set out in your Land Cruiser at first light.

The direction of the drive depends on the migratory patterns of the season—you might head south, to the expansive Serengeti plains where hundreds of thousands of wildebeest gather to give birth each February; or west, to watch them try to cross the crocodile-populated Grumeti River in April or May; or north to the border with Kenya’s Masai Mara region for the legendary Mara River crossings in August and September.

For your final evening in the Serengeti, the Lodge can arrange a romantic bush dinner under the stars.

Day four: Relaxation

Relax by the pool in the morning and enjoy lunch at  Maji Bar and Terrace . Afterwards, embark on a final game drive en route to Seronera Airstrip for a short, scenic flight over the Tanzanian Plains to Arusha, where a relaxed evening amongst the picturesque coffee plantations awaits.

Day five: Paradise bound

Four Seasons Seychelles View from Ocean View suite

Retreat to an island paradise in the Seychelles, where turquoise waters rejuvenate the body after a few days in the bush.

After a few days in the wild, you’ll be ready to explore some of Mother Nature’s other creations: her finest ocean beaches. Catch sight of Africa’s highest mountain as you board a short flight to Nairobi from from Kilimanjaro Airport. Once in Nairobi, a connecting flight will take you to the Seychelles, arriving at Four Seasons Resort Seychelles by late afternoon.

Here, you’ll stay in one of 67 tree house–inspired villas on a hill verdant with mango, jackfruit and coconut trees—picture a dense jungle cascading down towards sugary white sands. Those sands and the azure waters beyond are, of course, the main event in the Seychelles. As delicious as the Resort’s plush villas (each with its own plunge pool), Spa  and restaurants may be, the property’s finest features are the sweeping views that slope to the ocean.

Four Seasons Resort Seychelles

Once you’ve checked in, head straight for the water. Try stand-up paddleboarding or surf lessons, book a diving course, or just go snorkelling. If you’re not ready to get wet just yet, try teeing off instead: At sunset, the Resort’s beach transforms into a driving range where you can sip a cocktail while sending specially designed, biodegradable balls full of fish food flying into the Indian Ocean.

Day six: R&R on the beach in the Seychelles

Relax on the beach in Seychelles

While your time in the bush was hallmarked by exploration, discovery and activity, the sojourn in the Seychelles is calming, reflective and introspective.

Start the morning with yoga on the beach or at the Spa, followed by a languid breakfast buffet at Zez Restaurant , which is perched on a stunning hillside to offer unobstructed vistas.

To ensure you take home a memorable keepsake, book a painting lesson with local artist Nigel Henri well in advance of your stay. Henri will guide you on a 15-minute hike to the top of a granite plateau, where he’ll help you create your own landscape painting of the ocean expanse below. You can save the canvas as a souvenir, and have postcards made to send home.

Options abound for the rest of the day: Loll by the beach or pool, or, if you’re up for a culinary adventure, try your hand at a Creole cooking class , where Chef Sherla Mathurin will show you how to make octopus salad, Creole fish curry and other local dishes.

Take in the sunset with a cocktail and canapés atop the Spa’s roof, and end your night with a romantic dinner on the beach.

Day seven: Memorable excursion to Mahé

Coco de Mer trees in the Jardin du Roi gardens on Mahé

Trade the baobab trees of the Serengeti for coco de mer trees in the Seychelles.

Spend your last full day on an excursion arranged by the Resort: Choose either a day-long tour of Mahé island in a BMW SUV, which includes a driving tour of the charming capital of Victoria, or a tour of St Anne Marine National Park.

End your stay with dinner back at the Resort’s Kannel , where globally inspired options include Thai beef salad, chicken biryani rice and Singapore-style chilli crab.

Serengeti National Park Trips

A wildlife safari to Africa is not complete unless it includes a Serengeti National Park trip. Of the many wonders in this magnificent universe, Serengeti National Park, without a doubt, makes the list of those to kill for. As Highlights of Africa Safaris, we solely exist to make this Tanzanian safari an adventure to remember. Trips to Serengeti are broadly famous for The Great Migration; an 800-kilometer trek of wildebeest across the vast Serengeti grasslands in search for greener pastures, scaling undulating plains and crossing crocodile-infested rivers, before disappearing below the horizon.

safari holidays serengeti

Derived from the Maasai word Siringit, which translates to “a place where land moves forever,” Serengeti National Park truly embodies this poetic adulation with its endless plains. Wouldn’t you want to see these endless plains for yourself? We assure you, Serengeti Safari trips are every bit worth the praise, so what are you waiting for, talk to us, let’s give you the thrill of a lifetime. A Serengeti National Park trip entails sights of the Big Five: lions, leopards, black rhinos, elephants, and the African buffalo, and a variety of wildlife. Serengeti Safari trips take you through savanna plains which hold in their wealth over 2 million hoofed mammals otherwise known as ungulates, 1000 leopards, 400 lions, 550 cheetahs and over 500 species of birds. Who wouldn’t want to see this?

Known as Tanzania’s flagship conservation area, Serengeti National Park spans over 5,700 square miles. Due to the stunning density of wildlife traipsing the vast grasslands, one can be sure to get an experience of their life on a Serengeti National Park trip throughout the year. Within these plains, a tourist is sure to see countless herds of wildebeests on their Serengeti safari trip, and maybe the spellbinding motions of a hunt. Curious about what you’ll see on your trip to Serengeti besides wildlife? Well, within the same plains, this Tanzania safari could lead you to the Maasai villages, a tribe practicing pastoral nomadism in the Ngorongoro Crater Safari Conservation Area.

On a Serengeti trip, a traveler is also likely to hear a hyena cackle, or a lion roar, an elephant trumpet, the chirping and tweeting of flamboyant birds, and the many proud sounds and melodies common to the wildlife orchestra. On a trip to Serengeti, time holds its breath, inviting you into a world so pristine, and virgin of urbanization’s stain. On a Serengeti National Park trip, nature’s heartbeat is even-paced, calm, at peace. More to this, you can add the Rwenzori Mountains Trekking hike to the famous mountains of the moon.

Here, your cloak of stress and anxiety is washed off you like a tranquil shower, ushering you into a new reality of harmony. On this Serengeti Safari trip, time freezes before your eyes, and ahead stretches the warm smile of nature, beckoning you forth to partake of its generosity; the beauty that abounds. Come explore, come experience life wild. You can pick from our packages or contact us and we’ll design an itinerary to your liking.

History of serengeti national park.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, explorers and missionaries described the Serengeti plains and the massive numbers of animals found there. Only minor details are all that were reported before explorations in the late 1920s and early 1930s supply the first references to the great wildebeest migrations, and the first photographs of the region.

An area of 2,286 square kilometers was established in 1930 as a game reserve in what is now southern and eastern Serengeti.

safari holidays serengeti

The original Serengeti National Park, as it was gazetted in 1951, also included what now is the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA). In 1959, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area was split off from the Serengeti National Park and the park boundaries extended to the Kenya border.

The key reason for splitting off the Ngorongoro area was that local Maasai residents realized that they were threatened with eviction and consequently prohibited from grazing their cattle within the national park boundaries. To counter this, protests were staged. A compromise was reached wherein the Ngorongoro Crater Area was split off from the national park: the Maasai may live and graze their cattle in the Ngorongoro Crater area but not within Serengeti National Park boundaries.

In 1961 the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya was established and in 1965 the Lamai Wedge between the Mara River and Kenya border was added to Serengeti National Park, thus creating a permanent corridor allowing the wildebeests to migrate from the Serengeti plains in the south to the Loita Plains in the north. The Maswa Game Reserve was established in 1962 and a small area north of The Grumeti River in the western corridor was added in 1967.

The Serengeti National Park was among the first places to be proposed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO at the 1972 Stockholm conference. It was formally established in 1981.

Top things to do on a Serengeti National Park Safari Trip

Game drives.

One of the most exciting activities to engage in while on a Serengeti National Park trip is game drives. Game drives during Serengeti safari trips are done to track wildlife across the game park. They allow tourists to get close enough to the wild animals but still at a safe distance. Koi Safari Holidays is here to ensure you experience the adventure of a lifetime.

Serengeti National Park trip drives involve driving around the game park tracking the famous Big 5, finding the perfect spots to view the sunset and the park’s many breathtaking sceneries. These drives can last a full day: starting in the morning, having a lunch break, and then continuing in the afternoon.

The most anticipated safari tours activity on your trip to Serengeti should be the Great Migration, this happens around July, with the wildebeests crossing River Grumeti and the Mara River on the western side of the park.

Game drives during Serengeti trips are not only exciting but surreal, especially those moments when you catch the wildlife in action e.g., lions hunting the unsuspecting wildebeests in migration, buffaloes having a mud bath or elephants on an odyssey with their calves. However, driving off tracks in the game park is not allowed, as well as driving at night. Let’s plan your trip to Serengeti today!

The Great Migration

The 800-kilometer trek of the immense wildebeest herd is the largest mammal migration on earth and only experienced on a Serengeti National Park trip. The timing of the migration coincides with greening of nutritious grasses on the short-grass plains during the wet season. These areas are safer because predators can be easily spotted making it an ideal place for calving.

On a Serengeti safari trip, you experience the perfect representation of the circle of life in the world. The journey starts in Southern Serengeti when wildebeest calves are being born. Predators like lions and hyenas are constantly hunting for babies, and thousands of calves are born within only a couple of weeks.

When the drought comes in May, the herd moves north, towards the Masai Mara in Kenya , chomping down the high green grass, quickly followed by the gazelles and zebras. The migration is not without risk: crossing rivers means facing about 3,000 crocodiles, patiently waiting for a kill. All this and more, to be seen on your Serengeti trip.

Then, with the beginning of the short rains in late October, the migration makes its way back into the Serengeti. By December, the herds trek past Seronera to return to their calving grounds again, and the circle is complete. Planning a trip to Serengeti? Contact us today and we’ll ease you the trouble.

Serengeti Balloon Safaris

Serengeti National Park trips are more exciting with the Serenegti balloon safaris. Balloon flights are run daily at 0600 from four launch sites within Serengeti National Park: one throughout the year close to Seronera, and others in the Ndutu area (from 25 December to 15 March), in the Western Corridor (from June to October), and in northern Serengeti (from July to October). Highlights of Africa has got you covered, contact us and let’s plan your Serengeti safari trip.

Although not cheap, a balloon safari is worth the expense. Floating serenely over the treetops as the sun peaks over the horizon permits you to experience the endless Serengeti plains from an unforgettable perspective. As we set departure very early in the morning on your Serengeti trip, you may even spot some nocturnal predators getting ready for the day. Totally worth the experience while on your trip to Serengeti!

Seronera River Valley

The Central Serengeti, lying at the heart of this spectacular national park, is the most popular region in the reserve for its abundant wildlife, large numbers of big cats and quintessential Serengeti landscapes of acacia-studded savanna. Resident wildlife makes the Serengeti National Park trip fantastic all-year-round, but the months of April to June and October to December, when the herds of the Great Migration pass through the area, are when your trip to Serengeti is most exciting. Get in touch, let’s plan your perfect adventure.

The Seronera River Valley, located in the south-central region of the park, is one of the most popular areas in the entire reserve. Known as the Big Cat Capital of Africa, the Seronera is rich in lion, leopard and cheetah, making your Serengeti safari trip all the more exciting. Come ready to see leopards, on your Serengeti safari trip around the Seronera River, home to one of Africa’s densest populations of the big cats.

The Serengeti Plains, as you’ll witness on your Serengeti trip, are prime cheetah territory. Other animals to spot in the area’s varied habitats of rivers, swamps, kopjes and grasslands include elephant, hippos and crocodiles in the rivers, buffaloes, impala, topi, jackals and bat-eared foxes. Is there much you want to see? We can design an itinerary to your liking.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

One of the top sites you’ll be sure to visit on your Serengeti safari trip is Ngorongoro Crater, found in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Known as the world’s largest caldera, Ngorongoro Crater is found in Northern Tanzania, and southeast of Serengeti National Park. This Volcanic Crater sits in Ngorongoro District, 180km west of Arusha city. Besides Serengeti National Park trips, Ngorongoro Crater is the reason for many Tanzania safaris. Our tour packages are designed to ensure that you experience the magnificence of both sites. Talk to us!

Serengeti National Park trips boast breathtaking highlands and grasslands, and a variety of wildlife strut across its vast savanna grasslands. Voted as one of the Seven Natural Wonders in Africa in 2013, Ngorongoro Crater is home to the big five: lion, elephant, African buffalo, rhino and leopard, all to be seen on your Serengeti safari trip.

Famously known as the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ngorongoro Crater is home to the black rhino, one of the globally threatened species. A trip to Serengeti involves witnessing the annual migration of gazelle, wildebeest and zebra, animals which further augment the high density of wildlife inhabiting the area. It is also the heart of Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a protected area that spans lush savanna grasslands, woodlands and forests.

Naabi Hill Gate is one of sites to look forward to on your trip to Serengeti. It is found in the Eastern side of Serengeti National Park near Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Northern Tanzania. It serves as the main entrance to the park. Covered with acacia trees, Naabi hill’s walking trail offers some of the most spectacular views on your Serengeti safari trip.

During the Great Migration, the most anticipated activity on every Serengeti safari trip, Naabi hill harbors millions of wildebeest, hundreds of lions, gazelle, zebra and many more animals as they journey to Eastern Serengeti gate in search for fresh pastures and to breed. For an exceptional experience on your Serengeti trip, it is advisable to visit this hill between July and December, a time around which you can be sure to catch the Great Migration.

Highlights of Africa Safaris will see to it that you get the best Naabi Hill experience, from bookings, to game drives, hot-air balloon experience, nature walks and more. Are you in need of a campsite, lodge, resort, or hotel? Koi Safari Holidays gives you that assurance of indelible adventure.

Lobo Valley

Fed by permanent sources of water, Lobo Valley sits on 90 square miles of land, sustaining an abundance of wildlife. It also offers the best view of the big cats North of Serengeti National Park: lions, leopards and cheetahs in great numbers. A perfect stop for on your Serengeti safari trip.

Lobo, a pristine valley scattered with woodlands, open plains, ranges of hills and studded with spectacular granite kopje, is a remarkable place of great beauty and solitude. It’s no wonder a preference for many tourists on their Serengeti National Park trip. Some of the world’s most ancient rock formations estimated at 2-3 million years old can be seen here.

It has been known to have Open Acacia Woodlands, Granite Kopjes, Small Grass Plain, Hills, Springs, and Riverine Areas. Be sure to find Klipspringer, Elephant, Giraffe, Lion, Leopard, Impala, Baboon, Topi, Buffalo, and Steinbok.

Best known for

  • Large resident lion pride
  • Spectacular ancient rock formations
  • Klipspringer antelopes and old buffalo bulls
  • High concentrations of elephants, all and more on your Serengeti trip.

Moru Kopjes

Southwest of the Central Serengeti lies Moru, home to the black rhino. Moru Kopjes is home to the remaining population of black rhinos in the park, an important stop on your Serengeti National Park trip. The Serengeti Rhino Project has a visitor’s center here where one can learn more about the conservation strategies being employed.

Another highlight at Moru is Gong Rock where a short walk leads to a series of Maasai paintings. Just to the east lies the saline Lake Magadi, a great spot for pink flamingos to gather, attracting tourists on their Serengeti safari trip.

Have you ever seen a black rhino? If not, you’re in luck. Be sure to see one on your trip to Serengeti. Black rhinos inhabit the area year-round, but if you want to increase your chances of seeing other animals like wildebeest and zebras, visit Moru Kopjes between July and November when The Great Migration comes to Central Serengeti.

Moru Kopjes, which is free to visit 24 hours a day, is sandwiched between the Seronera and Ngare Nanyuki rivers on the eastern side of the region. Central Serengeti is easily accessed by car or safari vehicle, and Serengeti Sopa Lodge can be found approximately 18 miles away.

In addition to Moru Kopjes’ rock paintings and plains, travelers on a Serengeti trip can head to the northern part of the area to snap photos of Lake Magadi’s pink flamingos.

The Masaai is one of the most fascinating and well-preserved tribes in Africa that still maintains its cultural practices as was decades ago. Almost all tourists on their Serengeti National Park trip will choose to visit the Maasai village. Known for their semi-nomadic way of life, rearing large herds of cattle and sometimes goats and sheep. The Masaai contribute a great deal to the cultural heritage of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, having been three-time victors over other tribes who sought to settle within the same land.

For years, the Maasai’s cattle and the wildlife have shared the pastures and water in the Crater rim mostly during the dry seasons. They are a friendly and welcoming lot who freely share about their culture and perform some really energetic dances for tourists on a Serengeti safari trip. Arrangements are usually made for tourists interested in learning more about them in their villages and homes, ahead of their Serengeti trip, so they can interact with them in person. Be sure to return with a piece of their craft.

Grumeti River

Among the many places to visit on your Serengeti National Park trip, Grumeti River should make your list. Famously known as one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World, The Great Migration, without a doubt is best watched at Grumeti River. Here, as millions of wildebeest cross the mucky waters while being hunted by crocodiles manifests the survival-for-the-fittest motif.

A spectacle of great magnificence as tourists on their Serengeti safari trip witness over 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras, 350,000 gazelles, 12,000 elands crossing the rivers after the seasonal rains in search for fresh pastures. This migration normally happens between May to July.

Flowing westward into Lake Victoria, Grumeti River trails and traces out the western terrains of Serengeti National Park. The Serengeti trip leads you to the western corridors about 50 km long, shifting from savanna grassland to undulating hills, riverine woodlands to sparse acacia forests.

Bologonja Springs

Bologonja is a lush and idyllic spot hidden away in the remote reaches of the North Serengeti, ideal for every Serengeti National Park trip. Many varieties of colorful birds can be found here including kingfishers, hoopoes and rollers. Bologonja’s flourishing resources support some unusual antelope species including the mountain reedbuck and steenbok.

The nearby Larelemangi Salt Lake is a haven for wildlife and large herds of buffalo and elephants are regular visitors. Tucked away in the northeast corner of the Serengeti near the border of Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve, the verdant Bologonja Springs attracts hundreds of animals with refreshing waters and verdant canopies. A perfect spot for tourists on their Serengeti safari trip to witness wildlife in motion.

The Bologonja River’s headwaters are almost always devoid of tourists, meaning you’ll have a superb view of the region’s monkeys that occupy the leafy surroundings in solitude. The springs also draw larger mammals like elephants and giraffes, as well as a variety of birds and antelope species like the mountain reedbuck and steenbok.

Frequently Asked Questions

What to know before going on a serengeti national park trip / safari.

  • Prepare for mosquitos

Malaria, a mosquito-borne disease that’s endemic in many African countries, is prevalent throughout Tanzania. To protect yourself from mosquitoes while in the park, bring anti-malarial medication (which can be prescribed by your doctor), wear pants and long-sleeved shirts at night (when mosquitoes tend to be more of a nuisance) and bring insect repellent with DEET (a chemical that makes it harder for mosquitos to smell you).

  • Pack accordingly

Although most international flights will permit travelers to bring suitcases that weigh up to 50 pounds, shorter domestic flights typically allow 25 to 30 pounds per person. So, if you plan on traveling by plane from Kilimanjaro International Airport – the closest international airport to the park that sits just east of Arusha – to the Serengeti, keep your luggage to less than 30 pounds.

Ignore the rumble in the jungle

  • Sleep disturbance

Your sleep is bound to be disturbed by the occasional lion roaring, but remember that it probably sounds closer than it is. A lion’s roar can reach 114 decibels and travel as far as 5 miles.

What is the best time to visit Serengeti National Park?

JUNE – OCTOBER

June to October is prime time to visit the park if you want the best chances of viewing wild game and also the best weather conditions.

What You’ll See

This is the dry season so animals will be much easier to spot. With the dry weather, you can expect to find various animals gathering at watering holes, rivers and streams. From June onwards, the Great Migration moves northwards, and in July you can witness the crossing of the Mara River.

The weather is mainly hot and dry, with highs of 30°C and temperature lows of around 14°C. With the temperature dropping at night, it’s important to bring warm and cool clothing.

Where is Serengeti National Park located?

Serengeti National Park, national park and wildlife refuge on the Serengeti Plain in north-central Tanzania. It is partly adjacent to the Kenya border and is northwest of the adjoining Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It is best known for its huge herds of plains animals (especially gnu [wildebeests], gazelles, and zebras), and it is the only place in Africa where vast land-animal migrations still take place. The park, an international tourist attraction, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1981.

The park was established in 1951 and covers 5,700 square miles (14,763 square km) of some of the best grassland range in Africa, as well as extensive acacia woodland savanna. With elevations ranging from 3,020 to 6,070 feet (920 to 1,850 meters), the park extends 100 miles (160 km) southeast from points near the shores of Lake Victoria and, in its eastern portion, 100 miles (160 km) south from the Kenya-Tanzania border. It is along the “western corridor” to Lake Victoria that many of the park’s animals migrate.

How to get to Serengeti National Park?

Most safaris to the Serengeti start from the town of Arusha. The best option to get there is to fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) which is situated about 46km/29mi from Arusha. It is also possible to fly into Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR), just outside of Dar es Salaam, and fly on to Arusha Airport (ARK) or Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) – this offer an opportunity for a one day Mount Kilimanjaro Trek / Hike .

There are regular flights from Arusha to several airstrips inside the park.

It’s also possible to drive; the trip is about 325km/202mi and will take about eight hours. It is a bumpy ride but it’s scenic and you’ll see some wildlife on the way.

As the trip takes you through the Ngorongoro Conservation area, a popular option is to fly one way, and drive the other way taking in an overnight stop to visit the Ngorongoro Crater. Coming from the crater, the distance to the Seronera area in the Serengeti is about 140km/90mi, and the driving time is about three hours.

How much does it cost to visit Serengeti National Park?

Park fees to Serengeti National Park for non-citizens are charged per person, per day. Adults over the age of 16 pay $60 USD; children aged 5-16 pay $30 USD; and children under the age of 5 are free.

Weekly tickets are not available, and while this can certainly add up if travelers plan to stay for a week or longer, tour groups can often offer their travelers slightly discounted rates.

What is the best month to visit Serengeti National Park?

The best times to visit Serengeti National Park are from January to February or from June through September, although you should plan your trip around the movement of The Great Migration. For example, winter is the best time to see the herd in Southern Serengeti, while the Western Corridor and Northern Serengeti are the best places to spend the summer and autumn months.

Most safari operators will have a good idea of where the animals are headed and when, and most will adjust their itineraries based on the herd’s movement. Temperatures remain relatively constant with daytime highs resting in the 80s. You’ll find cooler weather in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area due to its higher elevation. April and May see the most rainfall, and many lodges and camps close for this slower season.

How many days do you need in Serengeti National Park?

Serengeti is a huge national park so we would recommend a minimum of 4 days in order to properly explore it and find the wildlife. Being so large, you do need to spend time driving around looking for the Big Five, which takes time. Plus in four days you’ll experience different weather and a variety of safari experiences.

Is Serengeti better than Kruger?

Serengeti National Park lies in the Mara Region along the northern border of Tanzania with Kenya, while Kruger National Park lies in the north of South Africa across the provinces – Mpumalanga and Limpopo. These 3 factors highlight the strengths of each of the parks.

Both parks deliver when it comes to wildlife: giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and other common safari wildlife. In the southern Serengeti, cheetahs are common, while in central Kruger there are fewer. Kruger is best for greater kudu, sable, nyala and bushbuck, while Serengeti is better for the world’s largest antelope, the Eland. The Kruger is home to a few of the remaining endangered African wild dogs’ population, while in the Serengeti several can be spotted regularly. Kruger offers night drives to see smaller nocturnal wildlife, which could be worth it.

Birdlife Species

There are more than 500 different species of recorded birds. Both parks are spectacular bird destinations. In summer, Kruger can be filled with colorful kingfishers, rollers and bee-eaters on shrubs, a variety of water bird species, as well as soaring raptors. The open terrain of the southern Serengeti doesn’t compare in terms of variety; however the more remote north and west locations are magnificent.

Travelers that are budget-conscious or want to travel independently would prefer Kruger. These travelers could enjoy two weeks exploring the Kruger on their own for the same cost as a three-night Serengeti safari. A Serengeti Safari provides luxury accommodation, five-star cuisine and activities to leave most in awe, all well worth the money spent.

What wildlife would I expect on my trip to Serenegti?

One of the greatest wilderness areas in the world, the Serengeti supports a magnificent diversity and abundance of animals, from the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and black rhino (although these are rarely spotted) – to giraffe, Grant’s gazelle, impala, kongoni, topi and eland.

The Serengeti is famous for its predators: you can expect excellent lion and cheetah sightings (and exciting lion kills), and leopards are also regularly spotted. Other predators include several cats, golden and black-backed jackals, African wild dog and spotted hyenas.

The Great Migration is the stellar highlight of the Serengeti’s wildlife: an annual circular movement of millions of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle northwards into the neighboring Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya and back into the plains of Serengeti. This mass movement of animals is accompanied by predators picking off their kills, while the dangerous crossings of the mighty Mara River make for dramatic scenes of struggle and survival as animals battle strong currents and attacks by huge Nile crocodiles.

For birders, there are more than 500 species in the park, including a few Tanzanian endemic species, such as Fischer’s lovebird, gray-breasted spurfowl and rufous-tailed weaver. Other birding highlights include kori bustard, secretary bird, usambiro barbet, yellow-throated sandgrouse, gray-crested helmet shrike, and Hildebrant’s starling.

Is it possible to do a Serengeti safari trip with another destination?

Yes it is very possible to do a serengeti trip with another destination. Some of these include Ngorongoro Crater and Conservation Area. Highlights of Africa Safaris makes it a point to see that you get the african experience of your life. We arrange tailor-made itineraries according to your preference.

Other destinations you might consider visiting while in Serengeti include Tanzania’s Tarangire highlands, Ngorongoro Crater, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Bolongoja Springs, Grumeti River, Moru Kopjes, Naabi hill, Lobo valley, Seronera River Valley, Kenya, Uganda, etc. Safaris: Guided Group Safari in Tanzania, Year-round Wildebeest Migration Safari Luxury Safari in Serengeti & Nyerere (previously Selous), Good-value Migration & Big 5 Safari, Tanzania’s Serengeti & Zanzibar, Biking, Canoeing & Walking Safari.

What to eat on a Safari trip to Serengeti National park?

Restaurants are few and far between in Serengeti National Park, but if you want to enjoy a sit-down meal, you’re in luck – several of the park’s lodges feature one or more on-site restaurants. Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge, for example, has an eatery that specializes in buffet-style meals with traditional safari and Tanzanian fare, such as locally sourced coffee and tea, nyama choma (grilled meats) and ugali (a maize dish that has a porridge-like consistency).

And at the Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, three dining venues are available, including an outdoor terrace with pizza and African-inspired tapas and an indoor buffet with various African and international dishes. Boma Grill, the property’s third restaurant, seats guests around an open-air fire pit as they savor African dishes and watch the Masai perform a traditional dance. Many Serengeti lodges will also offer bush dining experiences, where diners can enjoy a private meal in the wild.

What is the weather at Serengeti National Park?

JANUARY – FEBRUARY

January and February are a part of the year’s wet season so the vegetation will be lush, and the mornings and evenings can get quite cold.

This is the best time to see the calving in Serengeti’s southern regions. You will have a good chance of spotting most wildlife, including birds.

There’s a high chance of rain and humidity as temperatures remain hot during the day – but please bring warm clothing for the evenings when temperatures are expected to drop.

MARCH – MAY

From March to May, you will experience the back end of the wet season and game viewing opportunities may not be as rich as the other months.

Due to it being the wet season, the scenery will be incredible and you can count on the vegetation being at its most lush and beautiful. This is the low season for game viewing but you should still be able to spot many different species, including migratory birds.

March to May is the peak of the wet season so expect high rainfall and extreme humidity, with average high temperatures at over 26°C.

June to October is prime time to visit the park if you want the best chances of viewing game and also the best weather conditions.

NOVEMBER – DECEMBER

From November onwards, the Serengeti park sees the start of the wet season, so there will be a dramatic change in climate and landscape from September and October.

The wildebeest move back South from the Great Migration and although there are no exact routes, you may be able to spot them on the Eastern side of the park as they rotate back around. You will also have a high chance of spotting migratory birds during these months.

Expect some rainfall and warm to hot temperatures. The rainy spells will be relatively short and are unlikely to interfere with your safari plans.

What are the entry and exit requirements for Serengeti National Park?

To enter Tanzania, U.S. citizens must have a valid passport and visitor’s visa. Passports must include at least one blank visa page and be valid for a minimum of six months past your arrival date. Visas cost $100 and can be obtained either before your trip at a Tanzanian consulate or upon arrival at any point of entry staffed by immigration officials.

Before traveling to the region, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends receiving vaccinations for hepatitis A and B, rabies and typhoid on top of regular vaccines like polio and measles. Due to the prevalence of mosquitoes in the Serengeti, some doctors may also prescribe anti-malarial medication to take before, during and after your trip.

And travelers who do not have direct flights from the U.S. or Europe will need to obtain a yellow fever vaccination and present their proof of vaccination when they arrive. For more information about visas and vaccines, visit the U.S. State Department’s website and the CDC’s website.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
