Buying Safari Park tickets online is cheaper, faster, and safer. Safari Park encourages you to purchase your Safari Park tickets online and in advance. But it is not required.

How Much Are San Diego Zoo Safari Park Tickets At The Gate?

San Diego Safari Park ticket prices at the entrance are:

• $71 for adults
• $61 for children up to 12 years old
• FREE for toddlers and infants under 3 years old with a paid adult

How Kids Free in October at the Safari Park Works

Kids get San Diego Zoo Safari Park tickets free in October. Children under the age of 12 can get in free. There are some limits:

• They must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
• Only 5 children are permitted per adult. 

Your cheapest option is to buy a discounted adult ticket that allows you to bring in children for free. 

Unfortunately your Southern California CityPASS , and Go San Diego passes are not eligible for special events like this. AAA discounts won’t work either because they cannot be combined with any other discount offers.

Seniors Get in Free During February at San Diego Safari Park

1-Day Passes are free for everyone over 65 all of February. This deal is only available at the entrance. Present a valid photo ID with a birthdate showing that you’re over 65 at a Safari Park ticket window. Only one ticket per senior. You still have to pay for parking.

Which San Diego Zoo Annual Membership Is the Cheapest?

San Diego Zoo Annual Memberships include unlimited Safari Park entrance privileges. If you love animals and walking in beautiful surroundings this is one of the best ways to get cheap tickets for the San Diego Safari Park. You can save up to 99.6% off the standard 1-Day Pass price if you visit the zoo daily for a year with the Resident Adult Premium membership. The cost is 29 cents per daily visit.  But what if you don’t want to come every day?

If you want to visit often on weekends, buy the San Diego Resident Premium Adult membership ($109). If you plan to see the animals during the week, purchase the San Diego Resident Adult Membership ($95). This membership level has all weekends and major holidays blacked out, that’s 123 days. Bob and I are  Wildlife Protector Premium  members. At this level, we get free parking and unlimited entries to both the Safari Park and the San Diego Zoo. We usually visit Safari Park on Saturdays. Our favorites are Tiger Trail , Elephant Valley, Africa Tram, and eating lunch while watching herds of antelope and rhinos from a bench above Kijamii Overlook. If it’s a special occasion, we’ll dine at The Watering Hole restaurant.

Free Guest Admission coupons are one of the major perks of most San Diego Zoo annual memberships. Each of these printed tickets is like a 1-Day Pass – good for a one-time visit for one person. Guests can use these without a member being present.

How to Get and Use Free Guest Passes for Safari Park

You can visit San Diego Safari Park for free if you’ve got Complimentary Guest Passes. But the only way to get them is if you know a member who is willing to give them to you.  

You do NOT have to be with a member to enter the park using a San Diego Zoo Guest Pass.

Longtime members are more likely to have unused Guest Passes. Chances are that they’ve taken their visiting family and friends to the zoo and Safari Park many times. Members love sharing their passion for animals and they feel bad about letting their passes expire without being used. So asking them doesn’t cost you anything and may make them feel better. 

Buying Guest Passes online is risky . San Diego Zoo Global says that the resale of guest coupons is fraud and a violation of the seller’s annual membership agreement. They’re just printed tickets with a barcode. Anyone with a scanner and a printer can fake them. And you will not know that you’ve paid for a fake until you try to present it at the gate. You may be turned away because the scanner says that code has been used. 

How to Get 50% Off Discount Admission Coupons for Safari Park

This half-off San Diego Zoo Safari Park admission deal is legit. But they are also only available from someone who has an annual membership.

But these discounted tickets are MUCH easier to find than the free Guest Passes. Most of the annual membership options include 2 of these per year. Once again, ask the zoo members in your network if they have any unused coupons.

And just like the Guest Passes, buying these discount admission coupons online is not recommended.

Are Safari Park Shoppers Passes Worth It?

A Safari Park Shoppers’ Pass is another free way to enter the park. Actually, it’s a 1-Day Pass that will be refunded if you meet certain conditions.  Those conditions are:

• You’ve purchased a 1-Day Pass at the standard rate
• You’ve returned to the ticket sales window at the entrance within 45 minutes

Start back to the gate when you’ve shopped for 35 minutes because there may be people waiting in line at the ticket booth.

Are There Group Discounts at San Diego Zoo Safari Park?

You get 10% Off 1-Day Passes for groups of 15 or more paying visitors at Safari Park San Diego. This is a wonderful way for large families to get together while maintaining social distancing.  Of course it’s also ideal for businesses and social group outings. 

15% off the 1-Day Pass for groups of 100 or more. Call 619-718-3000 (Reservation Sales Department) well in advance of your trip. They will make sure that your group numbers will be counted in that day’s total. Also, they have meal vouchers for many of the eateries inside Safari Park for an extra fee. This can save your group members some money off of buying entrees à la carte.

What is the San Diego Zoo Tickets Senior Discount?

You can get 15% off a 1-Day Pass for guests over 65 at the gate . You must present a valid photo ID at a zoo ticket sales window to get this discount. They do not offer this deal online or by phone.

Save More Than 10% With Authorized Ticket Seller Deals

San Diego Zoo Global (SDZG) works with a limited group of vendors who have the right to legally sell Safari Park tickets. They are tied into the Safari Park reservation system. They have to maintain strict standards of customer service and abide by the rules set by SDGZ. 

These rules include maintaining their agreed-upon ticket parity so that the non-profit zoological organization can maintain its funding for conservation projects.

Costco San Diego Safari Park Tickets

If you search the internet you’ll see many references to super-cheap San Diego Zoo and Safari Park tickets sold at Costco. There’s just one problem, all of those posts are old and the offers are expired.

I spent hours scouring online forums, coupon code sites and large travel websites and the most recent  example of a Costco zoo ticket deal is from 2010. And in that comment thread they didn’t even give the price for the 1-Day Pass. 

I suspect that the killer Safari Park Costco deals will not be coming back. In the last couple of years San Diego Zoo Global, the Safari Park’s parent organization, has instituted a policy of price parity among authorized ticket sellers. SDZG doesn’t want other companies significantly undercutting their own gate prices. 

They’re not just being greedy. It’s for a good cause. Their mission is to end extinction and promote conservation awareness worldwide. And they aren’t subsidized or run by their local city like many other zoos. The San Diego Zoo and Safari Park are mostly self-funded through ticket sales to people like you.

Go ahead and check Costco’s Ticket Savings page to see if they’ve got Safari Park passes. But if you don’t find any, don’t be surprised. 

Costco San Diego Zoo Safari Park Ticket Bundles – There’s still a PDF for the Go San Diego Card discounts on the Costco website, but it’s an orphan. The Go San Diego Card is not on their ticket page, just links to a few restaurants. San Diego Zoo Safari Park Tickets On Groupon

Up to 70% off a 1-Day Adult Pass – This is misleading clickbait. Groupon’s last significant discount offer was in September 2020. If you go to their website you’ll get the standard 3% off deal that you’d get directly from Safari Park. Granted, 3% off is technically “up to 70% off”, but the wording is sneaky.

Public Service & Trade Associations Ticket Deals

FREE 1-Day Pass to the San Diego Zoo

Active duty US military are entitled to a free 1-Day Safari Park Pass. You’ll need to show your Uniformed Services ID Card or Common Access Card (CAC) at the entry turnstiles. You will not be allowed free access without that ID.

Military Family Discounts at Safari Park

10% Off 1-Day Pass at the Gate – Spouses and immediate family members must show their valid dependent ID cards at any ticket sales booth to get this discount.  

Get a 15-20% Discount at your local base’s Ticket and Travel Office. However you must buy in advance of your trip to Safari Park. You cannot get this deal at the gate. The percentage you will save varies by the service branch, the location of the base and other factors.

Veterans & Retired Military Safari Park Discounts

15% – 20% off 1 Day Pass – MUST BUY ON BASE. Free entry to San Diego Safari Park is only available to active duty military personnel. Retired military must buy their 1-Day Pass from their base’s Ticket and Travel Office. . Veterans and retired military can also get 2-Day San Diego Zoo Admission Passes and annual memberships at a discounted price at the base. Law Enforcement Discounts on San Diego Zoo Safari Park Tickets

18% off 1 Day Pass – MUST BUY THROUGH SDPOA.org. San Diego Safari Park does not offer any discounts for those who serve as San Diego law enforcement and their families. But you can get significantly cheaper tickets if you buy through the San Diego Police Officers Association website. Login, click on the Members tab and you’ll see the Theme Park Tickets category.

On the SDPOA.org members’ page you’ll see these ticket deals:

Firefighters Free in September at Safari Park

Active US firefighters with a valid ID can get a free 1-Day Pass for the San Diego Safari Park during September “Firefighters Appreciation Month” . Safari Park is located in the rural San Pasqual Valley and has sometimes been threatened by wildfires. So everyone who loves the animals here is VERY appreciative of the firefighters efforts to keep it safe. 

To get free entry under this program you must present your active firefighter ID with a photo. It doesn’t matter if it’s a department ID or a Union ID. This complimentary ticket is not available by phone or online.

Firefighters’ Family Discount

10% off 1-Day Passes for Family & Friends of Firefighters.  

During September, San Diego Safari Park offers 10% off each admission for up to 6 people accompanying an active duty US firefighter who has a valid department or union photo ID.

Do AZA Members Get a Discount at San Diego Safari Park?

There is no American Zoological Association (AZA) member discount at Safari Park . San Diego Zoo Global is a member of AZA, but unlike most zoos in the United States, it is self-funding and cannot afford to offer reciprocal AZA benefits and fulfill their primary mission which is to end extinction.

San Diego Zoo and Safari Park are both self-funded by your entry fees, food and concession sales, and extra add-on experiences like tour safaris. Most of the zoos in the AZA discount ticket program receive the majority of their budget from municipal coffers.

Airline and cruise lines employee discounts.

10% off 1-Day Pass at San Diego Safari Park.   Airline and cruise company employees and one guest are eligible for ten percent off one day admission. This deal is not available if you pay online or by phone.  You must present your company-issued photo ID or CLIA card before paying at the zoo ticket window.

San Diego Safari Park Travel Agent Discounts

10% off 1 Day Pass to the Safari Park. If you’re a member of IATAN (International Airlines Travel Agent Network), you and a guest are eligible for a ten percent discount at the gate. If you’re a tour operator, travel agent, or wholesaler you can get this deal. All you need to do is show your up-to-date ITAN card prior to paying at any Zoo ticket window.

Deals for Educators and Students

15% off a 1-Day Pass to Safari Park in San Diego for teachers directing curriculum-focused student trips. For more details, check the Zoo’s education and field trips page. The CTA Member Benefits website is a good resource for discounts and offers that teachers can use on personal trips to San Diego Safari Park.

San Diego Safari Park Student Discount

15% off 1 Adult 1-Day Pass to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park is the standard deal for students . All students 12 years of age and older are eligible. You must present your valid student ID before payment at any ticket sales booth to get this deal.

This offer is good for high school, community college, and university students as well as those working towards graduate degrees.

Is There a Diego Safari Park Residents’ Discount?

There aren’t any discounts for locals on 1-Day Passes for San Diego Safari Park. The best way for residents to save on Safari Park tickets is to buy an annual membership . These memberships offer significant savings for California residents in the 91900-92899 zip codes. The lowest tier costs $115 for a single adult. That means that your Safari Park and Zoo entries are free after just 2 visits.

How to Avoid Safari Park Online Ticket Scams

1) If the price for San Diego Safari Park tickets sounds too good to be true, you’re probably right. That’s the first rule to avoid being the victim of any online swindle. Pay attention to your little voice which says, “So what’s in it for them?” Sometimes it’s not just money, but your identity that’s at stake.

2) The Craigslist About Scams page says that most online fraud can be avoided if you insist on meeting face-to-face with the person selling the tickets. 

3) Guard your identity online by using payment systems like Apple Pay, Google Wallet or Payoneer. If you are asked to make payment via PayPal, add on the Buyer Protection fee. It’s inexpensive, only 3.1% + $0.30 per transaction. Otherwise you are not shielded from having someone take off with your money without giving you a valid ticket in return.

Reselling of San Diego Safari Park Tickets is Prohibited

The sale or transfer of guest coupons, complimentary tickets, or unused memberships is a violation of the legal terms of the San Diego Zoo Global annual membership agreement. Words to that effect can be found on all Safari Park tickets. 

Buying tickets from someone who is not an authorized ticket seller is a chancy proposition. Someone could have purchased a ticket online and printed more than one copy at home. There’s no way for you to tell if that ticket is good until it gets scanned at the gate. 

I understand that sometimes vacations are canceled due to illness or emergencies. But it doesn’t happen very often. Keep in mind that there’s a good chance that an amazing deal on Safari Park passes is a scam.

Never purchase an unused membership to San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Annual pass holders must show a valid photo ID with their Zoo membership card at the gate. You’re out of luck unless your name is the same as the one on the card.

Don’t Buy Safari Park Tickets on Craigslist

Buying cheap San Diego Zoo Safari Park tickets on Craigslist is a gamble with the odds against you. None of the authorized ticket sellers list their inventory on Craigslist. And although you may find the occasional person who had to cancel a trip posting their unused tickets it is rare.

Before you put money down on cheap Safari Park tickets posted on Craigslist read Craigslist’s Avoiding Scams page . PLEASE.

Some people have had success if the Craigslist post says “pay after entry”. That usually means that the person selling the entry pass is a member who is selling their guest passes. The zoo member brings you in through the gate as their guest and you pay them the agreed amount after you’re inside. 

This activity is prohibited by the members’ agreement with San Diego Zoo Global. Thus it’s morally questionable. It’s up to you whether you feel right about not doing the right thing to support endangered species. 

eBay – That incredible Safari Park ticket deal on eBay could be real or could be a steal (with you being the victim). Before you try to purchase them, read the eBay  how to recognize scams section.

Reddit –  I’ve read about a few meetings for transfers of San Diego Zoo or Safari Park tickets arranged in these forums. The ones that were successful were of the “pay after entry” type.

Closing Thoughts on Buying San Diego Safari Park Discount Tickets

EVERYONE can save some money on admission to San Diego Safari Park. There’s no reason to pay the gate price. And I hope that I’ve proved that to you in this article. San Diego 3-for-1 Pass is $199 per adult (age 10 and up) and $189 per child (age 3-9) and includes one admission to each of San Diego Zoo, San Diego Zoo Safari and SeaWorld San Diego. Must be used by the same person within seven consecutive days from the first visit.

San Diego Resident Membership , valid only for those who live in San Diego County, is $99 per adult (age 18-64) and $89.10 per Senior (age 65+). Different clubs have different offers, so it’s worth checking both your own AAA state club and the Southern California AAA club websites. If you haven’t yet set up your online access, you’ll sometimes need to do that to see your local club’s discounts.

Once you get to the club home page, select the “Discounts & Rewards” tab and then select “Theme parks & attractions.” If a particular discount on the Southern California site involves booking online through the club site, you will usually need to be a Southern California member. Discounts that involve showing your card at the gate are available to any AAA member. Costco.com sometimes offers a very good discount on San Diego Zoo tickets and you don’t have to be a Costco member to buy through their site. (Non-members pay a 5% surcharge, however.) There is a shipping charge when ordering from Costco.com.

Seniors (65 and older) get 15% off a 1-Day Pass. Available at the ticket booth only (not in advance).

Airline / Cruise Line Employee Ticket Discounts

Airline and cruise line employees presenting a company-picture identification badge or CLIA at the ticket windows receive a 10% discount off the 1-Day Pass.

Active duty military personnel with valid military ID card receive FREE regular admission. Spouses and dependents receive 10% discount on 1-Day Pass only. Valid military ID required. Available at the ticket booth only (not in advance).

Children ages 3-11 receive FREE regular admission to the Zoo during the entire month of October (must be accompanied by a paying adult). The Zoo’s Guided Bus Tour is not included with Kids’ Free entrance and must be purchased separately at the Zoo.

If you know you want to visit other attractions as well as San Diego Zoo, there are a number of discount pass options available that can save you a lot of money, and eliminate the hassle of buying all of your tickets individually. We’ve scouted out some of the best discounts you can find from reputable companies and describe them here. For more details and pricing, just select the pass name.

Go City San Diego All-Inclusive Pass

Balboa park multi-day explorer pass.

Go City San Diego All-Inclusive Pass allows you to visit as many attractions as you want within a set number of days (usually 3 to 7 days). You pay one discount price for the number of days you choose. These work well if you are visiting at least two major attractions plus some less expensive attractions. The more attractions you visit, the more you save.

Go City San Diego Pass : If you want to fit in as much as you can in 1 to 7-days using one simple pass for one price, consider this all-inclusive pass. This pass includes the San Diego Zoo and the Safari Park , Legoland California ,  SeaWorld San Diego on 3+ day cards,  Knott’s Berry Farm , plus multiple other attractions in the San Diego area. Plus, MouseSavers readers get an extra 5% off total pass purchases!

If you also plan to visit Balboa Park, consider the Balboa Park Multi-Day Explorer Pass , which includes one admission to each of the 17 participating Balboa Park museums (valid for 7 consecutive days) and 1-day admission to the San Diego Zoo.

Looking for a place to stay near the San Diego Zoo ? Choices are plentiful in the San Diego area near the San Diego Zoo, and getting around San Diego is fairly easy by car. If you don’t have a place in mind, we suggest checking out the hotels below. Our recommendations are not the cheapest places you can find– there are plenty of those out there– but we feel they offer a very good value for your dollar. As with our Preferred Hotels for Walt Disney World (Florida) , we suggest accommodations that will enhance your stay while not breaking the bank. That said, if you are used to Orlando area pricing, you will be in for some sticker shock. Low rates for decent but average hotels start at around $80-$120/night, mid-range hotels start at around $120 and can run upwards to $275/night or higher in peak seasons.

If you don’t know where to start, we suggest checking out:

• Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Downtown – 1.2 miles from the Zoo, 15 minute walk to USS Midway Museum; historic hotel with contemporary amenities.
• Hilton Garden Inn Downtown – easy walking distance to the Zoo and one block from the bay, new property with interior courtyards and heated rooftop pool. Note: self parking is not available – valet only.
• Best Western Cabrillo Garden Inn – Good value option if you are on a tight budget. Great location, exterior corridor style hotel, includes free continental breakfast.

Students ages 18 and older: get a 10% discount on membership!

Students who reside in San Diego County receive a 10% discount on the current price of a San Diego Resident, Resident Premium, Wildlife Protector, or Wildlife Protector Premium membership. Students who reside outside San Diego County receive a 10% discount on the current price of a Wildlife Protector or Wildlife Protector Premium membership. To obtain the discount, students must purchase a new membership in person, and present a valid photo ID and proof of current student enrollment upon their first visit to either park to pick up membership card and coupons.

No, you do not need a reservation to visit our parks.

Due to the proximity of wildlife, some tours and safaris require all guests ages 2 and older to wear a facial covering during a portion of the experience. Please check each tour for more information.

For guest and wildlife safety, please stay on public paths at all times during your visit.

Yes! The San Diego Zoo and the Safari Park are open every day of the year, rain or shine, including ALL holidays!

Safari Park Hours

The parking lot in front of the San Diego Zoo is owned and operated by the City of San Diego.  Parking in this lot, as well as the parking lots in and around Balboa Park, is free.  During peak attendance days (holiday periods, summer, and weekends), the parking lot may be full.  We encourage guests to park in overflow parking, located at Inspiration Point on the east side of Park Boulevard, between President’s Way and the Balboa Park Activity Center, and either walk or take the shuttle that services that serves Balboa Park.

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park parking lot is privately owned and has a parking fee. Please click here for current Safari Park parking fees . Payment can be made by credit or debit card or cash (no $100 bills).

No overnight parking is permitted at either park, other than for guests participating in scheduled sleepover programs.

Parking reminders: Lock your vehicle; lock your valuables out of sight; park within marked stalls; Zoo parking violations will be cited by municipal law enforcement.

The parking lot in front of the San Diego Zoo does not have designated RV or bus parking spaces.  We recommend guests with RVs park at the Inspiration Point parking lot (on the east side of Park Boulevard, between Presidents Way and the Balboa Park Activity Center) for easy access to the Zoo and the heart of Balboa Park via the free tram. The parking lot on the south side of Inspiration Point has designated full-size/striped RV and bus parking spaces.

The Safari Park's parking lot is open and available for RV/bus parking during normal business hours. It has spaces dedicated for large vehicles and parking staff will direct you to the appropriate location to park your oversized vehicle. Please click here for current Safari Park parking fees. The Safari Park does not permit overnight parking except for our Roar and Snore sleepover guests.

Yes!  The San Diego Zoo has five solar-to-electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at the southeast part of the parking lot.  The Safari Park has two electric charging stations. Please ask the Safari Park parking lot attendant for directions when you arrive.  There is a nominal fee at each park for use. 

Both the Zoo and the Safari Park  have manual wheelchairs and electric scooters available to rent for a nominal fee. Guests must provide a valid driver's license or San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance membership card.

Both parks have a limited inventory and provide these items on a first-come, first-served basis. No advance reservations are available. We recommend arriving early to secure one.

Outdoor lockers will be available at the Safari Park. At the Zoo, self-service lockers are available at Front Street (please note this does not include luggage check). Guests may carry small backpacks and bags into our parks.

The San Diego Zoo can store luggage for a fee.  Small items are $10 per piece; medium-size items are $12 per piece; large items are $15 per piece.

The Safari Park can store luggage for a fee of $15 for the first five items, plus $15 for each additional item.

This service is available at the main Guest Services building for reasonably sized luggage; same-day storage only.

For guests who have lost something while visiting, please contact us to inquire if your item was turned in to our Guest Services Department. Please include as much information as possible pertaining to your lost item and in which park you believe it is lost. Include complete contact information in case your item is found.

Yes!  The Zoo and Safari Park have strollers available for rent. Please visit the Zoo Guest Services  and  Safari Park Guest Services pages for information on stroller rentals and prices.

The Zoo has a First Aid office, located next to the Reptile house, which is often used by mothers to nurse their infants. There is a privacy curtain to allow mothers complete privacy. We also have a microwave for preparing your child’s meal. Some mothers prefer to sit just outside the First Aid office on one of the benches provided. It is semi-private as the vegetation growth is considerable. Diaper changing stations are also available in most restrooms.

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park has a curtained area in the Health Services office that is often used by mothers to nurse their infants, as well as an area in the women’s restrooms designated for nursing. Diaper changing stations are also available in most restrooms.

Items not permitted include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Cigarettes, e-cigarettes, vapes and marijuana. We are a smoke-free environment
• Alcohol and illegal substances
• Weapons of any kind to include replicas and toys
• Disruptive items such as drones, laser pointers, noise makers and sporting equipment
• Any transportation device not otherwise approved as a mobility device per SDZWA’s ADA guidelines
• Inappropriate or offensive attire. Proper attire, including shoes and shirts must be worn at all times
• Animals other than trained service animals
• Coolers larger than 12” by 12”
• Glass bottles or containers
• Costume masks or costume/clothing deemed by SDZWA management that too closely resembles an employee uniform
• Professional photographers with professional cameras or recording equipment, who are visiting the San Diego Zoo and/or Safari Park with the intent to take photographs or recordings of people, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance properties, or icons for professional purposes. Permission must be requested in advance and prior arrangements must be made with the appropriate San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance representatives. Permission for any recordings or broadcasts on the premises are within the sole discretion of San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.

Ceremonies of any kind or size without a reservation are prohibited.

Groups of over 70 persons , you may book an event with the Event Sales Department, which is the only way you may “reserve” a specific space (for a fee) and have exclusive use of that space for your purposes. The Zoo's Animals in Action Experience and Inside Look Tours get you VERY close to exotic wildlife. The Zoo's Wildlife Presentations give guests an opportunity to learn about our wildlife ambassadors from expert wildlife care specialists, and find out about San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance's conservation work around the world. Additionally, Wildlife Care Specialist Talks at the Zoo provide guests with insights about wildlife and their habitats. 

At the Safari Park , our Journey Into the Wild presentation (daily at 2 p.m.) is how you can join wildlife care specialists at Benbough Amphitheater as they introduce you to wildlife ambassadors representing San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance’s worldwide conservation work. Learn about amazing wildlife—from South America's Amazon and right here in our own backyard, in the Southwest of the United States!

Most of our Safaris at the Safari Park and other Special Experiences at both parks are uniquely designed to get you closer to wildlife!

There really isn't any special time that more wildlife are in view, although many of our animals are early risers and may be a bit more active in the morning. In our concern for the many endangered species that we house at our facilities, we have built habitats that mimic natural environments. Like natural environments, these areas give the animals plenty of room to hide. We have found the ability to hide is important to the well-being of many species. 

Wildlife may be taken off public view for a variety of reasons including environmental conditions, health issues, and behavioral concerns. In addition, many of our habitats are designed to allow animals to remove themselves from visitor view at any time. For these reasons, it is not always possible to predict or note these exceptions before the fact. Refunds or exchanges are not possible in cases of inclement weather or habitat closure.  A daily listing of changes or closures can be found at the main entrance of both parks. Please check upon arrival.

No. Pets, comfort animals, and emotional support animals are not permitted at the Zoo or Safari Park. Because we house significant populations of rare and endangered species, both the Zoo and the Safari Park are considered to be quarantined facilities. State and federal regulations for such facilities do not allow for the access of pets, comfort animals, or emotional support animals accompanying guests to these facilities. 

We do not offer kennel service at either park.  Contact Us so we may provide a list of local kennels.

No. The Safari Park is and always has been a walk-through sanctuary in which members and guests can purchase optional guided Safari tours to enhance their visits and get closer to animals. Please see our Safari Tours tab on the Park's home page for more information about these exciting tours and programs! 

Occasionally, nostalgic visitors confuse the Safari Park with an unaffiliated, drive-through animal attraction bearing a similar name that was once located 77 miles north of the Safari Park in the Irvine/Laguna Hills area. That attraction operated from 1970 to 1984. The site was then repurposed and spent 25 years as a water park before becoming what is now a community of upscale apartment homes.

The Zoo and Safari Park are approximately 35 miles apart from each other. The drive time between the two parks is about 45 minutes to one hour, depending on traffic and other factors. The Zoo is located in Balboa Park, just north of downtown San Diego, at 2920 Zoo Drive, San Diego, CA 92108. The Safari Park is located at 15500 San Pasqual Valley Road, Escondido, California 92027.

San Diego Zoo: The quickest way to the Zoo from the San Diego International Airport is by taxi or ride share, an 11-minute, 5-mile ride. Amtrak railway service (800-872-7245) travels up and down the coast between Los Angeles and downtown San Diego.  The #7 bus stops at the Zoo. Information about public bus transportation can be found on the web at www.sdcommute.com or by calling 619-233-3004. Useful information can be obtained from the San Diego Visitor Center, 619-236-1242.

Safari Park: Amtrak railway service (800-872-7245) travels up and down the coast between Los Angeles and downtown San Diego, stopping in Oceanside. From Oceanside, a light rail service called the Sprinter travels to Escondido, approximately 22 miles. Once you arrive at the downtown Escondido Transit Center via the Sprinter, the quickest way to the Safari Park is by taxi or ride share, an 11-minute, 7-mile ride. You can find more information about the Sprinter on the web or by calling 760-967-2001.

There is one public bus that stops at the Safari Park; however, depending upon your departure point, connecting schedules may mean a travel time of approximately 25 minutes from the Escondido Transit Center and up to 3 hours each way from San Diego. Bus service is very limited on weekends and holidays. Information about public bus transportation can be found on the web at www.sdcommute.com or by calling 619-233-3004. Overall, the easiest way to reach the Safari Park is by car. Useful transportation information can be obtained from the Escondido Visitor Center, (760) 839-4777.

It's possible, but we don't recommend it.  We recommend spending a minimum of four to six hours to see some of the Zoo and a minimum of four to six hours at each park to experience the San Diego Zoo and the Safari Park. The drive time between the two parks is about 45 minutes to one hour, depending on traffic and other factors.

Since there is so much to see and experience at our parks, and to get the most from an unhurried visit, we recommend planning a multi-day visit. Because each park requires a separate admission ticket, there are several multi-day ticket options that allow you to enjoy both parks at a relaxed pace!

Yes!  For same-day re-entry, guests should have their hands stamped at the exit, and re-enter through the main turnstiles, showing their tickets and hand stamps.

Members may show their membership cards and ID to re-enter.

Each ticketed supervising adult (age 18+) may bring up to ten (10) youths (ages 15 and younger) to the Zoo and Safari Park.

Children 15 years old and younger must be accompanied by an adult age 18+ with a valid form of entry. 

Smoking (including e-cigarettes) is not permitted anywhere on Zoo or Safari Park grounds or parking lots. Zoo guests should know smoking is not permitted in Balboa Park. Guests who wish to smoke are welcome to have their hands stamped for same-day re-entry when leaving our grounds to smoke.  Please keep your ticket! Safari Park guests should keep their parking receipts to avoid having to pay twice for same-day parking when leaving the parking lot for and returning from smoke breaks.

We recognize the seriousness of food allergies and although we would like to accommodate all guest requirements, as a not-for-profit organization we are unable to do so. Our kitchens are not equipped to prepare food separately for guests who are sensitive to certain ingredients.  Each restaurant can provide an ingredient list for the items available for purchase; however, we cannot assure that other ingredients may not be in the preparation environment. Guests are welcome to bring personal food items into our parks.  Large food storage containers such as coolers are not permitted on grounds and no facilities are available for food storage.

Yes! Guests are welcome to bring their own single-person food supply, in small containers, into our parks. No facilities are available for food storage other than lockers. For the safety of our guests and the wildlife in our care, no large coolers, glass items, alcohol, party trays, candles, balloons, or decorations are allowed on grounds.

Guests are welcome to bring a backpack into our parks.

With the exception of plants sold in our gift shops, no wildlife, including plant material, may be removed from grounds.

No. Drones are not permitted on or above Zoo or Safari Park grounds at any time.

Getting Involved

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance is a not-for-profit organization that works to conserve endangered species through management plans for our collections and for individual species. We are unable to accept animal or plant donations, because to do so would mean that we would have less room for the species with which we are currently working.

All potential products for every area have to go through San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance's Purchasing Department. Due to the large number of requests we receive, we ask that all inquiries to our buyers’ office be made in writing. You may send a cover letter along with a prospectus or a catalog to: Purchasing Department, San Diego Zoo, P.O. Box 120551, San Diego, CA 92112. Please understand that due to the large volume of inquiries received, this office cannot personally respond to each request.  A representative of this office will respond if an inquiry shows promise.

As you can imagine, we receive hundreds of emails each week from guests requesting an interview with our wildlife care specialists. We are unable to accommodate all such requests as this would take our wildlife care staff away from their primary responsibilities to the animals in their care. We're happy to match speakers with interested groups when possible. As a not-for-profit we charge a speaker fee which helps off-set our costs and funds our mission. The non-profit organization speaker fee starts at $400. The minimum for-profit organization speaker fee starts at $600 and up. Guests who are unable to do so on the initial visit date may bring the ticket along with original receipt to any ticket window at either park within 7 days of initial visit.

No.  Guest Passes are valid through the date printed on the ticket. No extensions or waivers are permitted.

Expired, unused Guest Passes can be exchanged in person only for a 25% discount toward the purchase of a current 1-Day Pass ticket at any ticket window.  Only one discount per ticket.

We do not offer a “family” membership. Adults and children have separate memberships and pricing. Youths ages 3–17 are eligible only for our San Diego Zoo Wildlife Explorer membership. We offer a Shopper’s Pass, which allows you to enter the Zoo or the Safari Park and shop.

At the Zoo, purchase a 1-Day Pass at the regular price and shop for 30 minutes. Once shopping, if you desire more time, you can extend your pass up to 60 minutes total. Just inform any shop employee that more time is needed. Return before your time is up and your 1-Day Pass purchase price will be refunded.

At the Safari Park, purchase a 1-Day Pass at the regular price and shop for 45 minutes. Return before your time is up and your 1-Day Pass purchase price will be refunded.

You have several delivery options when purchasing your tickets online. After completing the Billing screen, the Delivery Information screen allows you to choose the ticket delivery method that best suits your needs. Selecting the Print at Home delivery method allows you to print your tickets using your home or office computer and printer. Your tickets are emailed to you with a pdf attachment. Yes, the credit card used to make your online or telephone purchase and valid form of ID are required when picking up tickets at our windows and kiosks.

A "pending hold" is a banking industry practice of authorizing electronic transactions made with a debit or credit card and holding this balance as unavailable either until the merchant clears the transaction (also called "settlement") or the hold "drops off."

More than one hold can appear on the account when a guest inadvertently charges a card multiple times during the same transaction (usually by repeatedly clicking on "Submit Order"). Basically, each time a debit or credit card number is submitted, it is transmitted as an electronic inquiry to determine if funds are available to cover the potential transaction. The bank automatically places a hold on the amount(s) and retains the funds until the merchant clears or "settles" the transaction, usually at the close of business each day. The issuing bank still has your money (which is why it is "pending"), and these holds usually drop off after one to three business days, depending on the issuing bank's policy.

Whenever possible, no earlier than 24 hours after the initial transaction and at the issuing bank's request on letterhead, we are happy to assist in resolving "pending hold" issues. It's important to note that while a request to release a hold can be made, not all banks will honor one. And even if they do, the release of funds may not be instant. Ultimately, merchants (such as the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park) do not have the ability to release an authorization hold; the only entity that can do so is the issuing card's bank.

If a refund is approved, it may take up to 1–2 weeks to receive your refund, depending upon your bank's refund processing timeline.

Yes! Eligible airline and cruise line employees presenting a company-issued picture identification badge or CLIA card and one accompanying guest will receive a 10% discount off the 1-Day Pass at the Zoo and Safari Park ticket windows. All other accompanying guests pay the full ticket price at any ticket window at the same time the airline/cruise line ticket is processed. Discount cannot be combined with any other coupon or offer.

Yes! Groups of 15 or more paying admission receive a 10% discount off the walk-up and Any Day 1-Day Pass. Groups of 100 or more paying admission receive a 15% discount off the walk-up and Any Day 1-Day Pass. Advance reservations are strongly recommended.

For your convenience, we offer Meal Vouchers, accepted at participating restaurants. Meal vouchers can be redeemed at participating restaurants for an entree combo or child's plate and a non-alcoholic drink. Meal Vouchers eliminate the need for cash at restaurants and may save on the cost of purchasing items à la carte. Meal Vouchers include an informational flyer detailing participating restaurants and items offered at each park. Our restaurants throughout both parks are committed to providing a wide selection of high-quality, delicious all-American or international fare, snacks, and healthful alternatives.

Yes! Military discounts—for United States Active Duty military—are valid every day of the year during our regular scheduled operation, including ALL holidays. Visit as often as you wish! The discount is not valid for special ticketed events or programs.

I’m United States Active Duty military. What do I need to visit?

United States Active Duty military personnel, with a valid ID, do not require a ticket for admission to the Zoo or the Safari Park. Valid military ID must be presented at time of arrival. All guests ages 3 and older who are accompanying U.S. Active Duty military are required to have a ticket or a membership. 

Active duty U.S. Armed Forces personnel * receive all the benefits of our 1-Day Pass admission to the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park upon presenting a Common Access Card (CAC) or Uniformed Services ID Card at our gates. Complimentary admission is reserved exclusively for active duty service members upon presenting valid ID. Special ticketed events or programs are not included.

U.S. Active Duty military who for any reason are unable to present valid active duty ID are not eligible for free entrance and will be required to purchase non-refundable admission to enter our parks. 

U.S. Active Duty military spouses and eligible immediate dependents receive a 10% discount off the 1-Day Pass at both the Zoo and Safari Park and do not need to be accompanied by an active duty member of the Armed Forces. Just show your valid dependent ID card at any ticket window!

Retirees and veterans: We do not offer a discount at our parks; however, we work with MWR Departments on board local military installations to offer discount packages for U.S. military retirees, veterans and others. Please contact your military MWR Ticket Office for discount requirements on ticket purchases.

At the Zoo, the 1-Day Pass includes Zoo admission with unlimited use of the Guided Bus Tour, Kangaroo Bus, Skyfari aerial tram, and viewing of habitats and regularly scheduled presentations (subject to availability). No. San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance is a self-supporting, not-for-profit conservation organization that raises funds to maintain its parks, provide state-of-the-art animal care for endangered species, and pursue conservation efforts around the world. Most of our funds are raised through admission and on-grounds sales at our parks. Unlike most zoos in the US, we are not largely supported by municipal, state, or federal funds. In the interest of supporting our conservation mission, we do not offer complimentary or discount admission to members of other zoos or affiliated organizations.

Yes! Seniors age 65 and over who reside in San Diego County receive a 10% discount off the current price of a San Diego Resident, Resident Premium, Wildlife Protector, and Wildlife Protector Premium memberships. Seniors age 65 and over who reside in outside San Diego County receive a 10% discount off the current price of a Wildlife Protector and Wildlife Protector Premium memberships. No. The Zoo and Safari Park no longer offer a single free admission day (traditionally called Founder's Day). Instead, the entire month of October is now "Kids Free" with free admission (entrance only) offered to children 11 years and younger at both the Zoo and the Safari Park.

Each year, from October 1–31, in honor of our Zoo’s founding, youths 11 years of age and younger are granted free entrance to the Zoo and Safari Park when accompanied during their visit by an adult age 18+ with a vaild form of entry (membership, admission ticket, U.S. military ID, etc.). Youths 2 years of age and younger are always free. Anyone younger than 15 must be accompanied by a paid (admission or member) adult 18+ during their visits to the Zoo and the Safari Park.

Adults may purchase their admission ticket(s) or memberships online, by phone, or day of at any ticket window at the Zoo or Safari Park. Qualifying youths ages 11 and younger entering free do not need a ticket to enter. October Kids Free entrance includes the Africa Tram* at the Safari Park; and the Guided Bus Tour*, Kangaroo Bus*, and Skyfari aerial tram* at the Zoo (*subject to availability). San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance is a nonprofit organization that supports other nonprofit organizations in Southern California by providing charitable contributions in the form of complimentary tickets good for the San Diego Zoo or the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Each eligible organization may receive a maximum of two (2) complimentary 1-Day Pass tickets per organization per calendar year.

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance requires that   these certain criteria   be met in order to be considered for ticket donations.

Due to the volume of requests we receive, we are unable to respond to telephone inquiries and we cannot accept requests sent by email or fax.

Our organization works with local hospitals and wish support organizations to accommodate individuals of all ages and families in need. These organizations fall within the state and federally instituted not-for-profit guidelines we are required to follow. We encourage individuals and families with specific needs to contact one of these organizations for additional information and to arrange a visit.

As a nonprofit organization, which itself raises funds to support our mission, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance is unable to raise funds or provide grants to sponsor other organizations.   We are unable to provide complimentary Special Experiences, Safaris, Tours, or Programs at our parks.

Seasonal Events

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park's Autumn Festival activities are scheduled on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays in October. During Autumn Festival weekends, the Safari Park is open until 7 p.m.

Autumn Festival is included with Safari Park admission and/or membership.

During October, youths ages 11 and younger are free at the Zoo or Safari Park, when accompanied by an adult with a valid form of admission. This includes Autumn Festival, a special event scheduled on October weekends at the Safari Park. For all other months in the year, ages 3–11 pay a Child admission price, while ages 2 and younger are admitted free to the Zoo and Safari Park.

Autumn Festival is scheduled on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays in October at the Safari Park. Activities and entertainment include live music, wildlife insights from Safari Parker, and more. Seasonal foods will be available for purchase at various locations. During Autumn Festival weekends, the Safari Park is open until 7 p.m. 

Spring Safari Featuring Butterfly Jungle at the Safari Park is scheduled March 18–May 14, 2023.

During Spring Safari Featuring Butterfly Jungle at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park—March 18–May 14, 2023—the Butterfly Jungle habitat will be open daily to Butterfly Jungle Safari participants, with check-in for this 20-minute premium experience available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

Butterfly Jungle Safari requires an additional ticket for ages 1 and older. It is purchased separately from and is not included with Safari Park admission or membership. All Butterfly Jungle visitors age 1 and older—including members—must reserve and purchase a timed ticket for Butterfly Jungle.  Safari Park admission or membership is separate and required.

Yes. All guests age 1 and older (including members and nonmembers) will need a date- and time-specific Butterfly Jungle Safari ticket to visit Butterfly Jungle. Park admission or membership is separate and required.

In addition to the 20-minute Butterfly Jungle Safari , selected Roar & Snore Safaris  are also available that include an All Access Pass to Butterfly Jungle.  

Yes. The Zoo and the Safari Park are both open every day, including holidays.

No. To maintain the high-quality care provided to all our wildlife residents, our parks never display fireworks.

The San Diego Zoo's HalGLOWeen activities are scheduled on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays in October. During HalGLOWeen, the Zoo is open until 9 p.m.

HalGLOWeen is included with San Diego Zoo admission and/or membership.

During October, youths ages 11 and younger are free at the Zoo or Safari Park, when accompanied by an adult with a valid form of admission. This includes HalGLOWeen, a special event at the San Diego Zoo on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays in October. For all other months in the year, youths ages 3–11 pay a Child admission price, while those 2 and younger are admitted free to the Zoo and Safari Park.

HalGLOWeen includes a variety of special activities,  entertainment,  costumed characters, live music, and Halloween decor. 

For our younger guests who choose to celebrate the Halloween season, individuals who are 11 years of age and younger may dress in their favorite family friendly Halloween costume—as long as the costumes adhere to our costume guidelines (listed below).

Guests who choose to dress in costume to celebrate the Halloween season must follow these guidelines:

• Costumes should be family friendly and may not be not obstructive, offensive, or violent.
• Children 11 years of age or younger may wear masks. However masks must not obstruct vision, and eyes must always be visible.
• Costumes should not contain sharp objects, pointed objects, or materials that may accidentally strike another guest.
• Lightsabers, water pistols, swords, or any other accessories that could be mistaken for an actual weapon are not permitted.
• Costumes should not drag on the ground. 

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance reserves the right to deny admission to or remove any person wearing attire that is considered inappropriate.

Nighttime Zoo at the San Diego Zoo takes place May 26–September 4, 2023. Nighttime Zoo offers a variety of special activities, entertainment, and extended Zoo hours.

No Nighttime Zoo entertainment is scheduled on Monday, August 21. Zoo hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on that date.

Nighttime Zoo , the San Diego Zoo's summer celebration, is included with San Diego Zoo admission and/or membership.

No, Seniors Free month is only valid for free admission to the Safari Park during the month of February 2024. Senior guests must be age 65+ with valid photo ID to enter free. All members receive Wild Perks discounts on Safaris. Parking not included.

Spring Safari is included with Safari Park admission and/or membership. Butterfly Jungle Safari requires an additional ticket for ages 1 and older. It is purchased separately from and is not included with Safari Park admission or membership. All Butterfly Jungle visitors—including members—of all ages, must reserve and purchase a timed ticket for Butterfly Jungle. Safari Park admission or membership is separate and required.

Spring Safari activities include live music, entertainment, and wildlife encounters. Seasonal food items are available at Park dining venues.   Butterfly Jungle Safari requires an additional ticket for all ages. Wild Holidays is scheduled on selected dates in November and December. The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. during this event, with Wild Holidays festivities beginning at 4 p.m.

The Safari Park's Wild Holidays activities and entertainment are included with Safari Park admission or membership. 

During the Safari Park's Wild Holidays, guests can enjoy a dazzling winter wonderland of seasonal entertainment and special activities. 

Santa Claus makes appearances at both parks during the holiday season, included with membership and admission!
