Bible Verses to Read When Traveling

A psalm for traveling, scripture prayers for safe travel, short godly travel quotes.

My favorite travel moments happen when I connect what I see with the good news in  Scripture  verses. Scripture references often increase my own understanding of various locations, especially in a foreign country. Bible verses and prayers for safe travel put our hearts and minds at ease.

Here are some of my favorite travel Bible verses organized by category for easy reference. Remember, the Lord keeps you close at all times.

1. God’s Protection

You are never without God’s strong right hand and faithful presence. Such a beautiful truth strengthens a man’s heart and a woman’s steps to be brave!

1) Luke 4:10  – “He will command His angels concerning you to guard you carefully.” 2) Proverbs 3:23-24  – “Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble. When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.” 3) Psalm 121:7-8  – “The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” 4) Psalm 91:2, 4   – “This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; He is my God, and I trust him. He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.   Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day.”

2. Covenant of Peace

If you are traveling to a new place that is unfamiliar to you, your peace of mind may take a hit. You may not even speak the local language. The Apostle Paul certainly understood those challenges.

Again, Bible verses and prayers for safe travel calm anxiety. Let these words of the Lord find a hiding place in your heart.

5) Matthew 11:28-30 (MSG)  – “Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” 6) John 14:27  – “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” 7) Romans 12:18  – “If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” 8) Ephesians 2:14  – “For He himself is our peace.” 9) Philippians 4:7  – “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” 10) Colossians 3:15  – “And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.” 11) 2 Thessalonians 3:16  – “Now may the Lord of  peace  himself give you  peace  at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all.”

Joshua 1:9; Bible verses and prayers for safe travel

3. Good Success

How we define a travel “success” varies. I deem a trip successful when three criteria are met:

  • I saw new destinations in God’s creation;
  • I met new people; and
  • I learned many new things that gave me a greater appreciation of God and His hand over my life.

Regardless of how you define a successful trip, here are a few words to the faith and faithful to keep close.

12) Psalm 23:3  – “He refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for His name’s sake.” 13) Proverbs 16:9  – “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” 14) Proverbs 3:3-5  – “Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart.   So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man.”

joy in the bible

The Psalms in  God’s holy Word  contain extraordinary words of faith to guide believers. I keep Psalm 139 close at hand as I travel. When God is your comfort zone, the whole earth is your oyster. And that is no little thing!

15) Psalm 139:3-10 (NLT)  – “You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do.   You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord.   You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.   Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand!   I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence!   If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there.   If I ride the wings of the dawn, if I dwell by the farthest oceans,   even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me.” 16) Psalm 139:3-10 (ESV)  – “You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways.   Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.   You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.   Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.   Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence?   If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in the depths of the earth, you are there!   If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,   even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.”

Bible verses and prayers for safe travel

Praying daily keeps the  Word of God  and God’s love vibrant as you enjoy God’s creation where you travel. His Holy Spirit inside of you is the voice of the Lord directing you the right way.

17) Heavenly Father, thank you for the opportunity and joy to travel in this season of my life. You have kept me and my loved ones safe, and I am grateful. Allow me to cherish the life of every living thing on my journey and return me home safely. In Jesus’ Name, Amen. 18) Lord, I am traveling where You have opened the door. Erase any second thoughts and let me trust in You. I am safe with you. I do not travel alone for your hand is upon me. Your protection is divine. In front and behind You encircle my life. For I am yours, and you are mine. In Jesus’ Name, Amen. 19) O King of my heart, I travel knowing that the eyes of the Lord are upon me. Words of the faith You have given me are hidden in my heart. I pray that the glory of the Lord goes before me so that I can shine Your light wherever I go. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Reading is a huge part of traveling – especially in planes, cars, and trains. It is helpful to keep the Great Commission in mind all the days of your life as you travel.

Top 12 Bible Verses For Safe Travel

Being able to travel is a blessing, but it can also heighten anxiety and stress. Sometimes traveling might seem scary because of the unknowns, but God knows all, and He will protect you, keep you safe. and watch over you on your journey.

If you or someone you know is preparing to go on a vacation or mission trip, pray to God for guidance and protection.

Studying the following top 12 Bible verses for safe travel is a great way to provide comfort and peace of mind before traveling.

Top 12 Bible Verses for Safe Travels

Enjoy 5 Short Stories from Scripture about Safe Travel

Shadows of death – psalm 23.

When you travel, keep Psalm 23 in mind because God promises that “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4). One thing about shadows of death…they are not the reality. I’d rather get hit by the shadow of a semi than the semi itself.  The point being, we have no need to fear shadows of death.

His Plans, Not Ours – Proverbs 16

When we travel, things may not always go as planned, but we know that “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps” (Proverbs 16:9), meaning that God will establish our steps, walk, or travels, even though we had plans that differed in the beginning.

A Lighted Path – Psalm 119

Cars and trucks have headlights for very good reason, but we also know that God’s “word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105), so whether it’s off to grandmother’s house, a Christmas vacation, or a trip to the store, God’s Word illuminates our path along the way, and we need that in a world full of darkness.

Always With You – Matthew 28

Scripture teaches us that the Lord never forsakes us or leaves us, even when we forsake Him.  His promise to the disciples is the same promise for us, “behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20b), and that means He will be with us all the way into the kingdom.

A Wide Path – Psalm 18

The psalmist knew he could trust God, even in the hard places of life, so he wrote, “You gave a wide place for my steps under me, and my feet did not slip” (Psalm 18:36).  Even though we might slip and fall, He is there to pick us up again, and place us on good footing, providing a wide path for our journeys in life.

God is Always With Us

Even when we don’t realize it or think about it, God is always there. Whenver you travel, think about this…He is traveling with you since He is both with you and in you.  Take that to heart the next time you travel and may God grant you travel mercies.

If you or someone else is going to be traveling, please share these top 12 Bible verses for safe travel with them. It could give them a feeling of safety as they travel, knowing God goes with them.

28.ACTS 1:1–31

1  The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,

2  Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:

3  To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:

4  And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.

5  For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

6  When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?

7  And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.

8  But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

9  And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.

10  And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;

11  Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

12  Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day’s journey.

13  And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.

14  These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

15  And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)

16  Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.

17  For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry.

18  Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.

19  And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.

20  For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take.

21  Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,

22  Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.

23  And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.

24  And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,

25  That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.

26  And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

29  And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God.

32.Matthew 25:40

And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

33.Philippians 4:19

19  But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

34. 1 Peter 4:10

10  As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

35. Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

6  In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

36. Genesis 12:1-2

Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:

2  And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:

37.Proverbs 19:21

There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand.

38. 1 Samuel 12:24

24  Only fear the Lord, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.

Scripture will help us connect and focus on the Lord. It will protect us from many different situations in life and give us daily wisdom. God has given believers the Holy Spirit to help us on our walk of faith. He will guide us in the right direction.

He will show us what to do. He will convict us when we’re going the wrong way. He will show us things in our lives that are holding us back and more.

We can also pray to the Spirit for help, peace, and comfort in times of trouble. We might be in the world, but we are not to follow the worlds desires. Allow your journey to glorify God.

August 21, 2023 by Mary 5 Comments

Before your next trip, save these 28 travel bible verses to grant you traveling mercies and keep you calm. These Scriptures are perfect to meditate on as you board, whether you’re traveling by plane, boat, train, bus, or car!

safe journey bible verse

An Adventure to Remember

Last month we embarked on a trip we’ve been planning since before we got married over 16 years ago: New Zealand ! Richard was born there and has family there, and we’ve been wanting to go for years. But it seemed like every time we tried to make the trek, something always prevented us from going, whether it was work, a new baby, health concerns, or moving.

But this year, despite going through one of our most challenging years (currently in upheaval with our home being damaged from toxic smoke from a landfill fire), we decided to go anyway. We decided, if we wait for a perfect time to travel, we’ll never go anywhere!

And honestly, it was the perfect time to go — our kids are at such a fun age (9 & 11) and old enough to always have this as a core memory. They got to meet their great-grandfather, aunties & uncles, and cousins they’ve never met before. Not to mention all the breathtaking scenery, new foods, and memorable experiences we all had. The boys even got to sit in the cockpit of our first plane as we boarded!

safe journey bible verse

Since we haven’t traveled in a while and this was the longest flight I’ve ever been on (14+ hours!) I needed some tools to help me stay calm. God’s Word is at the top of the list, of course. I thought maybe you could also use some inspiring bible verses to help you stay calm and trust God as you travel!

18 Comforting Bible Verses For Protection when traveling

' src=

Traveling may at times evoke feelings of anxiety, fear, or uncertainty. God in His wisdom knew that we may experience these emotions from time to time and has provided encouragement, counsel, and comfort through the holy scriptures.

The Bible has a number of passages that point to the fact that the Lord is always with us in our going out and in our coming in.

It is the Lord who guides and protects us while we travel. In the King James Version of Matthew 28:20 Jesus made a promise that “lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world”.

The Lord is not slack concerning His promises. All we have to do is trust in Him for protection and He will guide us each step of the way.

In the book of Proverbs, we are told to trust in the Lord and He will direct our path. The English Standard Version puts it this way, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths”. Proverbs 3:5-6

There is great comfort in knowing that we serve an omnipresent God who is not just everywhere but takes a deep interest in our wellbeing. The Heavenly Father carefully guards us, He goes before us, and He is beside us.

With His constant presence, we can be confident that wherever we go we will have a safe journey thanks to the watchful eye of our Lord.

Luke 4:10 NIV : God’s angels will shield you

Luke 4:10 NIV images pictures quotes

“For it is written: He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully;”

In the gospel of Luke, the word of God gives the assurance that the Lord will command His angels to carefully guard and protect you. There is no need to be anxious or fearful because the Lord has assigned spiritual bodyguards to escort you and provide invisible protection.

Bullets, accidents, and other man-made devices have no power over the entourage of angels who are tasked with your protection as you embark on very risky journeys in remote places or volatile areas.

Proverbs 3:23 NIV : You are under The Lord’s protection “Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble.”

This text offers counsel on how to ensure you have a safe journey without being sidetracked by obstacles and barriers. In verse twenty-one, two important things are mentioned wisdom and discretion.

Wisdom and discretion will ensure that you are guided by sound reason as you embark on your journey. In addition, wisdom comes from the Lord which means you should consult God before any undertaking in order to be shielded from unforeseen danger while traveling.

Proverbs 3:26 NIV: God’s hand will shelter you. “for the Lord will be at your side and will keep your foot from being snared.”

This text has a comforting promise that offers protection. Reflecting on this verse will keep you in good spirits as you prepare for long journeys. The Lord will bless you with sunshine, good weather, smooth traffic, a safe flight, and anything else you need while traveling.

This is also a great text if you will be traveling alone. Not having a companion on a trip may make you feel somewhat uncomfortable especially if you don’t know where you are going.

However, there is no need to worry because Jesus Christ will travel with you each step of the way and ensure that you get to your final destination safely.

Deuteronomy 31:8 NIV : You are entrusted to God’s care. “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

This is one of those Bible verses that speaks true peace to the mind and dispel anxiety and fear. Knowing that the Lion of Judah, the Prince of Peace, and the God of Hosts is with you is very comforting.

There is no need to worry about uncertainties. There is no reason to be fearful of the outcome because Jehovah is on the same journey to secure safe travel in your going out and in your coming in.

Psalm 139:9-10 NIV : Jesus will secure and guard you. “If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, ¹⁰ even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.”

There is no place in the world where you may go and not have the assurance that the Lord is watching over you. The psalmist understood this and in return decided to express the words in this passage.

This verse is especially calming for individuals who are uncomfortable with plane rides or traveling by ship. If you travel to the highest point in the sky or take a long expedition by sea the hands of the Lord will guide and uphold you.

God’s word has a number of verses that may be used as prayer requests for safe travel. You may want a verse for safe driving, a text to prayerfully reflect on while flying, or a short verse to prepare you mentally for a camping or hiking trip.

Psalm 91:1-2 NIV : The Lord’s watchful eye will guide and protect you

Psalm 91:1-2 NIV images pictures quotes

“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. ² I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

This text is a beautiful prayer . You may repeat it word for word with conviction or you may use it as a guide to form a prayer like the one below.

Dear Lord, help me to consistently dwell in the secret place of the Most High and abide under the shadow of the Almighty. You are my refuge and I trust in You. Keep me under your wings as I travel today. I humbly ask these mercies in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Psalm 121:7-8 NIV : You are under God’s shield of protection. “The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; ⁸ the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”

This Psalm may be used as a short prayer for your children, family members , or anyone else who will be leaving your company to go on a journey.

You may repeat these words as you hug at the door, you may prayerfully chant them for a goodbye ritual, or you may use them to affirm your departing guests.

You may use this template while adding the person’s name.

O Lord, keep (insert name) from all harm and watch over (his/her) life. Watch over (his/her) going out and coming in both now and forevermore I ask in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Psalm 36:7 NIV : You are held within God’s protective embrace. “How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.”

The Lord is gracious and merciful and you can always depend on Him for His keeping care, tender mercies, and protection. If you are about to start a journey or while traveling you may repeat this verse to acknowledge the blessings of the Lord and request His continued guidance.

O God, your everlasting love is priceless to us. We take refuge under the shadow of your wings as we travel today. Grant us your richest blessings we ask in the name of our Redeemer Jesus Christ. Amen.

I Peter 5:7 NIV : The grace of Christ Jesus will watch over you. “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

Here is a short prayer you may say to quell any anxieties you may be having.

Merciful God, help me not to be anxious about my upcoming trip. I place all my travel plans, concerns, and cares in your steady hands and I will lay all my burdens at your feet. Send your Holy Spirit to comfort me. I humbly ask in Jesus’ name Amen.

Isaiah 41:10 NIV : Jesus’ divine grace will shield you from danger. “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Here is a prayer that you may whisper to the Lord while using Isaiah 41:10 as a guide.

Dear God, I claim the promises in your word. You told me that I should not fear or be dismayed because You are with me and You are my God.

Give me the strength and help I need as I go on this journey and uphold me with your righteous right hand. I ask these journeying mercies in the name of Jesus. Amen

If you are in need of some powerful Psalms that speak about protection and safe travel then the twenty-third Psalm is an excellent choice. Along with this well-known text, you may also find other Psalms that provide great reassurance about God’s protection.

Psalm 23:3-4 NIV : God will shield you from harm.

Psalm 23:3-4 NIV images pictures quotes

“he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. ⁴ Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

This Psalm is timeless, well-known, and powerful because of the promises found in it. You can plan any trip or go on any journey knowing the Lord will guide you in the path of righteousness.

There is no need to fear evil when you travel through a dark valley or if you have to drive on dangerous roads. David was confident that even in the valley of the shadow of death evil would not harm him.

You too can have this confidence as you depend on the Lord of Lords to bless you with a safe trip.

Psalm 32:7 NIV : He will keep you out of harm’s way. “You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.”

This Psalm speaks about the protection that is found in Jesus Christ. You can embark on any journey knowing that your safety is guaranteed.

There are instances where you may face obstacles but the word of God says that you will be protected from trouble and surrounded with deliverance.

Psalm 18:2 NIV : He will ensure your safety and security. “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”

It’s a breath of fresh air knowing that when you take God with you on a journey you can be relaxed and calm. He is your rock, a fortress of protection, a refuge, a shield, and a hiding place.

If a family trip or business trip doesn’t go the way you plan you can always lean on the Lord for a source of strength and guidance.

Psalm 119:105 NIV : The Lord will lead you on a safe road “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”

It is important to take the word of God with you wherever you may go. This Psalm is a reminder that it will be a lamp unto your feet and a light unto your path.

Reflect on God’s word, repeat your favorite Bible verse, or prayerfully whisper a text for protection and the Lord will enlighten you as you travel.

A vacation may bring mixed emotions. You are excited to go and enjoy yourself as you relax but you may also get anxious as you plan and put your itinerary together.

These verses will help you to have a tranquil and peaceful mindset.

Colossians 3:15 NIV : Be at peace because God is with you

Colossians 3:15 NIV images pictures quotes

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.”

This verse is a great text to reflect on while vacationing. Don’t worry about work, unchecked emails, and the thousand other things that usually preoccupy your time.

Unwind, relax, rest, and let the peace of Christ surround you. Your trip is a call to peace so keep it that way.

Psalm 32:8 NIV : The Lord is always with you “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.”

This verse may provide direction while you plan your vacation or allow you to follow that still-small voice while on your trip. Either way, there is no better thing than following God’s will and allowing Him to guide and direct you even while you enjoy yourself on a vacation.

Joshua 1:5 NIV : He will always be beside you, watching and protecting you “No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Moses witnessed firsthand the protective and nurturing power of God. He was tremendously rescued from the River Nile as a baby. He saw the Lord destroy the pharaoh’s army at the Red Sea.

In a scorching wilderness, the Lord appeared as water that poured from a rock. He saw the constant presence of God as a shade by day and a flame by night.

Exodus 13:21 NIV :  God is with you day and night “By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night.”

The many experiences of Moses display the interest that the Lord places in our protection and guidance as we travel physically and spiritually on our Christian journey . You too can be at peace knowing you serve the God of Moses.

Philippians 4:7 NIV :  Jesus will work things out “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

As you put your travel itinerary together for your vacation you may get anxious wondering if everything will work out. You may start to think about how the weather may affect your plans or other little glitches that may come up.

As you think about these glitches and come up with contingency plans just allow the peace of the Lord to saturate you. Bask in the thought that you serve an all-knowing God who will work things out for you.

There are many verses in the Bible that look at protection while traveling. Some of them provide comfort, others may be used as prayers, and some outline the protection and guidance that the Lord provides while you travel or enjoy a vacation.

Grant me the wisdom to navigate my journey with care, and the discernment to avoid the paths of harm. Shield me from the perils that lurk on the roads and in the skies.

May Your angels travel with me and stand guard, keeping me safe from accidents, and guiding every driver, pilot, and fellow traveler I encounter.

Bless my going out and my coming in. Let Your presence be a comforting whisper in my heart, reminding me that I am never alone. Keep me in the joy and peace of Your love, as I undertake this day’s journey.

In the confidence of Your unfailing love, I entrust my safety to You. Thank You for Your promise of protection. I step forward in faith, knowing You are with me.

John 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.

Prayer For Calm Seas

My Father, who art in Heaven, hear my humble plea as I embark upon this vast and restless sea. Your Word, in Psalm 107:29, tells of how You stilled the storm to a whisper and hushed the waves of the sea. In Your mighty power, You have commanded the raging waters, and they have obeyed.

Lord of all creation, I implore You now, grant us calm seas on our journey. Let Your peace reign over the deep, as You calmed the storm on the Sea of Galilee. Be our steadfast Captain and Navigator, guiding us safely through the paths You have set before us.

In every surge and swell, may Your calming presence be felt aboard our vessel. I trust in Your sovereignty over all nature, that You would speak “Peace, be still,” and grant us a tranquil passage.

Protect us, O God, from the perils that lurk beneath the waves. Keep our hearts anchored in faith, not in fear, knowing that You are with us through every crest and trough. Let Your Spirit be the wind in our sails and Your wisdom the compass by which we steer.

As we journey, may we reflect on the journey of life and the path You have charted for us. May this voyage be a testament to Your enduring love and power, a reminder that with You, we will reach our destination safely.

In the name of Jesus, our Savior and the calmer of storms, I pray. Amen.

Grant me safe passage through valleys and hills, over waters deep and vast. Let Your angels encamp around me, their celestial vigil a fortress of peace.

Genesis 12:1.

The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.”

This verse marks the beginning of Abram’s journey of faith when God called him to leave everything behind and go to a land that He would reveal to him. It highlights the importance of obedience and trust in God’s guidance, even when the destination is unknown. The journey of faith often requires us to step out of our comfort zones and embrace the unknown, trusting that God will lead us to where He wants us to be.

Exodus 13:21

By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night.

During the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land, God provided them with His presence through a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. This verse illustrates God’s constant guidance and provision for His people on their journey. It reminds us that God is not only with us in our journey but also goes before us, leading the way and illuminating our path.

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

This well-known verse from Psalm 23 serves as a reminder that God is with us even in the most challenging and difficult times of our journey. It reassures us that we need not fear because His presence and His guidance bring comfort and assurance. Proverbs 16:9

In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.

This verse emphasizes the sovereignty of God in guiding our journeys. While we may make plans and set our own course, it is ultimately the Lord who directs our steps. It teaches us to trust in God’s wisdom and guidance, allowing Him to lead us on the right path. Our journeys may not always go according to our plans, but we can have confidence that God’s plan is better and His steps will ultimately lead us to where He wants us to be.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

This verse reminds us that on our journey, our strength does not come from our own efforts but from our hope in the Lord. When we place our trust in Him, He renews our strength and empowers us to persevere. It encourages us to continue walking, running, and soaring in faith, knowing that with God’s help, we will not grow weary or faint.

Matthew 28:19-20

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

Known as the Great Commission, these verses highlight the mission and journey that Jesus has entrusted to His followers. He commands them to go and make disciples, baptizing them and teaching them to follow His teachings. The assurance of His presence accompanies this command, assuring that He will be with them every step of the way. These verses remind us of the important role we have in spreading the Gospel and the certainty of Christ’s continual presence with us on this journey.

Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”

These words of Jesus express the high cost and commitment of following Him. It calls for a daily surrender of our own desires and self-centeredness, taking up our cross and faithfully following Him. This verse challenges us to examine our motives and priorities in our journey of discipleship, prompting us to assess whether we are truly willing to deny ourselves and walk in obedience to Christ’s teachings.

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

This powerful statement by Jesus reminds us that He is not only our guide on this journey but also the means by which we can reach the destination – eternal life with the Father. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. He is the source of salvation and the path we must follow. This verse underscores the exclusivity of Jesus as the only path to God and challenges us to place our faith in Him alone as we navigate our journey of faith.

Romans 8:28

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

This verse offers encouragement and assurance that even in the midst of our journey’s challenges and trials, God is working for our good. Our journey of faith requires us to step out in trust and rely on the unseen, knowing that our faith in God’s goodness and faithfulness will sustain us along the way.

Galatians 5:22-23

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

These verses highlight the qualities that should be evident in our lives as we journey with the Holy Spirit. The fruit of the Spirit serves as a roadmap, guiding us towards a life marked by love, joy, peace, and other virtues. It reminds us that our journey of faith should result in a transformation of character, as we yield to the work of the Spirit within us.

Ephesians 2:10

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

This verse emphasizes the purpose and intention behind our journey of faith. We are not aimlessly wandering, but rather God’s handiwork, created with a specific purpose. Our journey is not only about personal transformation but also about participating in the good works that God has prepared for us. It reminds us that our lives have significance and that God has uniquely equipped us to make a positive impact in the world.

Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

This verse reassures us that our journey of faith is not a one-time event but a lifelong process. God, who initiated the work of transformation within us, will continue to work in and through us until the day of Christ’s return. It offers hope and encouragement, knowing that God’s work in us is not dependent on our own strength or capabilities but on His faithfulness and power.

Colossians 3:2-3

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.

These verses remind us of the proper focus and mindset we should have on our journey of faith. Our minds should be set on heavenly things, not consumed by earthly concerns. They invite us to live with an eternal perspective, recognizing that our true life is found in Christ and our identity is hidden with Him. It challenges us to detach ourselves from the temporary and fix our gaze on the eternal, seeking to align our desires and priorities with God’s kingdom purposes.

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

It describes faith as having confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we cannot see. Our journey with God is a journey of faith, requiring trust and belief in His promises and unseen realities. It challenges us to cultivate and strengthen our faith as we continue to walk with Him, knowing that our faith has the power to move mountains and bring about God’s purposes in our lives.

While our natural inclination may be to avoid difficulties, this passage teaches us that the testing of our faith produces perseverance, which leads to maturity and completeness. It reminds us that our journey will have its share of trials, but by embracing them with joy and endurance, we allow God to refine us and make us more like Christ.

1 Peter 2:21

To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.

This verse calls us to follow in the footsteps of Christ, our ultimate example, who suffered for us. It reminds us that our journey of faith may entail suffering and hardships, but they are an essential part of our calling. Just as Christ’s suffering had a purpose, so too can our suffering bring about God’s redemptive work in and through us. It challenges us to embrace the example set by Christ and to faithfully walk in His footsteps, even when the path is difficult.

2 Peter 1:5-7

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.

These verses outline a progression of virtues that should characterize our journey of faith. It begins with faith as the foundation and calls us to supplement it with goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection, and love. This passage challenges us to cultivate and develop these qualities in our lives as we continue to walk with God, ultimately leading to a life that reflects the image of Christ.

It serves as a reminder to persevere, knowing that the trials and struggles of our present journey are temporary in light of the eternal joy that awaits us.

What Does the Bible Say About Journey?

In the Bible, the concept of journey is often used to symbolize the Christian life. Our journey begins when we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, and it continues as we walk with Him daily.

One of the most famous journeys in the Bible is the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. This journey is a powerful illustration of how God leads and provides for His people as they walk in obedience to Him. Their journey was not always easy, but God was faithful to them every step of the way.

In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul frequently speaks of the Christian life as a journey. He encourages us to “walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called” (Ephesians 4:1) and to “run with endurance the race that is set before us” (Hebrews 12:1). This reminds us that the Christian life is not a sprint but a marathon, and we are to persevere and remain steadfast in our faith.

Jesus Himself also spoke about the journey of following Him. He said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6), emphasizing that He is the one who leads us on this journey. As we follow Him, He promises to be with us always, even to the end of the age (Matthew 28:20).

Our journey as Christians is a process of growth and transformation. We are called to continually press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:14). Through the Holy Spirit, we are being sanctified and refined as we journey closer to God and become more like His Son, Jesus Christ.

As we journey through life, we are also called to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19) and to share the good news of Jesus Christ with others along the way. Our journey is not just for our own benefit, but also for the glory of God and the advancement of His kingdom.

In conclusion, the Bible portrays the Christian life as a journey filled with purpose, challenges, and blessings. We are called to walk in faith, obedience, and perseverance, knowing that God is with us every step of the way. Our ultimate goal is to reach our heavenly home, where we will dwell with the Lord forever.

4 Prayers for Safe Travels and Journeys

As we have the ability to move from place to place easily by car, plane or train for business or pleasure, we may think traveling is a modern-day phenomenon. However, a closer look at Scripture shows us that travel and journeys are major themes in the Bible. Throughout both the Old and News Testaments, individuals such as Abram, Jesus and Paul, for example, regularly traveled.

We can learn much from Scripture for our journeying, whether for pleasure or purpose. In particular, the theme of travel and journeys can be applied to our spiritual lives as the Bible has much to say about our spiritual journeying.

Preparation for the Journey

Road in the mountains that says start

The Hebrew verb nasa can mean to set out on the beginning of a journey. The verb is used primarily in this way in the Pentateuch , the first five books of the Bible. It refers to the journey of the Israelites — the start of their journey from Egypt, and the different stages of the journey when the pillar of cloud or fire indicated they should move on.

Most of us have time to prepare before we set out on a journey. But the picture of the Israelites waiting in Egypt for Pharaoh to let them go is of suddenly leaving with no preparation. Exodus 12:39 says: “...they had been driven out of Egypt and did not have time to prepare food for themselves.”

Numbers 33 outlines the stages of the Israelites journey and the 42 times they packed up camp and set out again. It may be hard to imagine what it was like to pack up all one’s belongings — deciding what to take or leave behind, organize children, round up animals, pack food and water, and not be too exhausted to leave at the allotted time. They even had an alarm to get them going ( Numbers 10:2-6 )! We often find packing a suitcase for a few days to be tiring, and need to set an alarm when our journeys begin early.

Maybe you have never had to leave on a journey without any preparation, although perhaps at short notice. Or perhaps the only time you have had to pack up everything is to move house. Many people in our world have to set out with no preparation and leave everything behind. In particular, we think about those who flee because of war.

In all these situations, whether you are preparing for a pleasant journey, or have to suddenly leave because of dire circumstances, you can be reminded that God is watching over you as with the Israelites ( Exodus 12:42 ). This prayer is for you.

I thank You for watching over me as I prepare for all my journeys whether it is to take a vacation, travel for business, move house, or one which is thrust upon me unexpectedly. Thank You for Your constant vigil while I sleep, when I awake, and as I pack my suitcases. Give me the strength to prepare well for my journeys. When I feel fraught and tired, help me to stay calm knowing that You care for me.

Heavenly Father, I ask You to watch over men, women, and children who have to flee their homes with no preparation — those who are running away from harsh situations and from war, just like the Israelites had to run away from Egypt. I thank You that I can choose what to put in my suitcase, but I pray for those who have to put their whole lives in a suitcase, choosing what to take and what to leave behind. I ask You to care for these people who are destitute.

The Route for the Journey

Happy senior couple navigating with a map

The word for “road” or “way” in both the Old Testament ( derek ) and New Testament ( hodos ) can refer to a physical road ( Numbers 21:4 , Matthew 21:8 ) but also figuratively to the actions of a person and the direction they are taking.

In Deuteronomy, the Israelites were instructed to walk in the ways ( derek ) of the Lord ( Deuteronomy 10:12 ; 11:22; 19:9). Jesus used the word hodos in the following verse “I am the way ( hodos ) and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” ( John 14:6 ).

We usually do not set out on a journey without knowing the way we are going — having directions, planning the route, purchasing tickets, or other details. Even though we are careful in planning our journeys, they often come with obstacles. Delayed flights, inclement weather, and unwanted detours can present challenges and frustrations. It was the same in biblical times. The Israelites became impatient because they had to go around Edom ( Numbers 21:4 ). Jesus “had to go through Samaria” ( John 4:4 ), an unwanted route for most Jews who tried to avoid contact with Samaritans.

However, Jesus’ journey through Samaria gave Him the opportunity to share the truth of who he was with the woman at the well , and through her witness many more came to have faith in Jesus.

Use the prayer below as you plan your way for any physical journey you are taking and for opportunities to show the goodness of God. Pray over your spiritual journey as well. The prayer below is based on Psalm 119:26-32 . I have paraphrased it for you:

Heavenly Father,

As I plan the route of my next journey, whether for business or pleasure, I ask that each stage of the trip will go smoothly so I can get to my destination easily. When it does not, help me not to get frustrated and annoyed, but to see the opportunities you have given me to show Your goodness and kindness, just as Jesus did.

Lord God, just as I carefully plan the physical routes for any journey I am taking, teach me the importance of being intentional with Your ways for my life. Help me to understand Your instructions so I can meditate on and follow Your wonderful teachings. Keep me from going the wrong way, or making wrong decisions. In Your goodness, gently guide me. Today, I choose to be obedient and faithfully follow You.

The Journey

Little girl looking out an airplane window while travelling

Journeys such as road trips, flights, train rides, and more often give the opportunity to talk and share with those with whom we are traveling, and with strangers. They also provide teaching moments, especially for children. Deuteronomy 11:19 says we are to teach God’s words to our children “when you walk along the road...” Our trips provide a chance to focus on and speak about spiritual things, but not just with children.

Jesus took the occasions of journeys to instruct his disciples and others during his ministry and after his resurrection . In particular, we are reminded of Jesus walking with the two disciples on the road to Emmaus as He “explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself” ( Luke 24:13-32 ). There are many other occasions, too, when Jesus used His travels for instruction — not limited to Mark 2:23-28 , Mark 9:30-34 , Luke 19:1-6 .

Journeys also present the opportunity to show compassion and love to others, as with the parable of the Good Samaritan ( Luke 10:25-37 ).

Use this prayer for your upcoming journey, to look for chances to show kindness to others, to share the Gospel and your faith with family or friends traveling with you, and even with strangers you meet.

Help me to see the journeys I take as opportunities to show kindness, compassion, and Your mercy, just as Jesus did. I want to bring glory to You by sharing, encouraging, and teaching about Your love and goodness. Give me the chance to talk about what You have done for me and in my life. Help me to share my testimony and my faith with those I am in the car with, sit next to on the plane, and walk with on the road.

I thank You for the example of Jesus, who did so much of His teaching and healing while He was on journeys. Thank you that it is not just about the destination, but all that we can experience on the way. Just as You have walked with those through history who placed their trust in You, be with me and those I am traveling with today.

When we travel and arrive at our destinations we are, in a sense, sojourners. We make a temporary stay in places that are foreign to us, whether they are other countries or different areas of our own country.

To sojourn is a familiar theme throughout the Bible from the Old Testament to the New Testament. Abraham, for example, was a sojourner when he lived in Canaan. He sojourned in other places too: Egypt due to the famine ( Genesis 12:10 ), Gerar ( Genesis 20:1 ), and the land of the Philistines ( Genesis 21:34 ).

All of God’s people were sojourners until they arrived in the Promised Land . Then God reminded them to respect the sojourners among them because they were once foreigners ( Exodus 23:9 , Deuteronomy 10:19 , Leviticus 19:33 ).

Jesus, too, lived like a sojourner when on this earth. He said: “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head” ( Matthew 8:20 ). He also relied on the hospitality of others to provide a bed and food for him.

The Bible tells us we are foreigners when we don’t know Christ, but as Christians, we have become members of God’s household ( Ephesians 2:11-19 ). Even though we are considered strangers in this world ( Hebrews 11:13 , 1 Peter 2:11 ), we are to treat non-Christians well.

As you travel and take up temporary residence in different places, pray that you will be given good treatment and that, likewise, you can show God’s love and goodness to those who are strangers in your own communities and homes.

As I think about temporarily staying in another country, area, or someone’s home, not only do I hope to be treated well, but help me to be respectful to those around me who have different customs and behaviors than myself. I want to be a good witness for You in the way I behave, the actions I take, and the words I say. I also ask for Your continued protection and safety, remembering that Your concern for sojourners was not just for biblical times, but it extends to me today. Keep me and my traveling companions safe. May we be shown the hospitality that we want to extend to those who come into our homes or into our communities and country.
