How to Plan a Perfect Day Trip to Santa Barbara, California

Santa Barbara is one of the west coast’s most beautiful and lively coastal cities, and as a California native, it’s a place I never get sick of visiting. The downtown area boasts gorgeous architecture (including many historical buildings) in a stunning location, and is known for having great entertainment, restaurants, and bars.

As you continue to explore beyond downtown, you’ll find picturesque natural scenery, as well as many top-tier wineries. If you’re planning on taking a day trip to Santa Barbara, this guide includes a full Santa Barbara itinerary and everything you need to know for your visit!

That being said, we would absolutely never recommend something to you that we don’t stand behind 100%.

Is a Day in Santa Barbara Enough?

You can absolutely see a lot of Santa Barbara in a day.

Since so many of the most notable sights are within the downtown area, it’s easy to check off a lot of must-see spots during a day trip, including Stearns Wharf , The Funk Zone , the historic Santa Barbara Courthouse , the Botanic Garden , and Old Mission Santa Barbara .

One thing to note is that you won’t have much time to spend at the beach if you’re only doing a day trip to the city.

You can definitely check out East Beach and West Beach (on either side of Stearns Wharf), but you won’t have the time to stop by some of the more peaceful beaches away from the Downtown Santa Barbara area.

There are also a lot of excellent hikes around Santa Barbara, and unfortunately, you won’t be able to do one of these hikes and see all that the downtown area has to offer in just one day.

If you’re able to extend your stay in Santa Barbara, I’d highly recommend adding a hike or two to your Santa Barbara itinerary (you’ll find recommendations below).

P.S. if you have a couple of days, we have an entire other guide to spending 2 days in Santa Barbara , which you’ll probably want to read.

How to Spend One Day in Santa Barbara: A Complete Guide

You’ll start your day in the Downtown Santa Barbara area, grabbing something to eat and checking out some of the most iconic sights in Santa Barbara.

After lunch, you’ll make your way a little bit outside of downtown to a botanic garden, and then return to The Funk Zone for dinner and drinks.

Breakfast in Santa Barbara

First things first: kick off your Santa Barbara day trip with some breakfast! Here are a few breakfast options in Santa Barbara:

  • Jeannine’s at the Shore : There are a few locations around the Santa Barbara area, but head to the location at one State Street, which is right across the street from the beach. The menu offers a variety of classic breakfast options, including benedicts, egg dishes, French toasts, and more. For those taking the train, this spot is also just a couple blocks away from the Amtrak station!
  • Chad’s : This is another excellent beachside option that offers breakfast sandwiches, burritos, pancakes, omelets, benedicts, and plenty more. If you’re up for it, try their mimosa flight!
  • Santa Barbara Roasting Company : If you’re looking for more of a grab-and-go situation, check out this coffee shop. They offer a variety of baked goods and coffee and tea drinks, as well as some more quick breakfast options (like bagel sandwiches and avocado toast).

Walk Down Stearns Wharf & Stop by the Beach

santa barbara trip

A visit to Stearns Wharf is one of the more touristy things to do in Santa Barbara, but the views of the coast can’t be beat!

This wharf was built in 1872, and at the time was the longest deep-water wharf located on the California coast between San Pedro and San Francisco. You can skip the shops and restaurants, but go for a stroll, snap some photos, and enjoy the surroundings!

After Stearns Wharf, head on down to West Beach for a quick stroll along the water. If you’d prefer to stay off the sand, there is also a walking path that parallels West Cabrillo Boulevard. Turn around once you get to the parking lot on the western side of the beach, and make your way to the next stop!

Santa Barbara County Courthouse

santa barbara trip

After Stearns Wharf, you’ll make your way to the Santa Barbara County Courthouse , which is about a mile and a half away.

If you traveled to Santa Barbara by car, I’d recommend driving to the courthouse, as you’ll need your car to get to the next couple of stops after lunch. Don’t worry – you’ll have more opportunities to explore by foot later!

If you don’t have a car, you can either call a rideshare, walk, or bike. If you choose to walk or bike, I’d recommend following State Street all the way down.

This palm tree-lined street is the central hub of Downtown Santa Barbara. It’s home to many popular restaurants and shops, and the architecture is absolutely beautiful.

The historic Santa Barbara County Courthouse is a must-see if you’re doing Santa Barbara in one day. This Spanish-Colonial style landmark was built in 1929, and features large murals and gorgeous tilework.

At the time of writing this article, the interior of the courthouse is closed to the public, and the free docent-led tours are paused – check the website for the most up-to-date information.

If the interior is open when you visit, be sure to climb up the Clock Tower for incredible panoramic views of Santa Barbara.

If you’re unable to access the interior when you visit, it’s still very much worth a stop.

Do a self-guided tour of the gardens and courthouse exterior. This interactive map will give you a bit of insight into some of the must-see spots around the property. Some particularly cool spots to check out include the Garden Arch , the Anacapa Arch , and the Jail Entrance .

Walk Over to State Street for Lunch

santa barbara trip

Once you’re done at the courthouse, stop for a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants in the area. If you’d like, you can grab your food to-go, and then take it over to the mission (the next stop on the itinerary) and enjoy your meal on the beautiful lawns.

Here are a few great options to check out on (and around) State Street that are near the courthouse:

  • State & Fig : State & Fig is a rustic Californian-style brunch and lunch eatery. The menu features a variety of burgers, fried chicken sandwiches, salads, paninis, and more.
  • The Blue Owl : This casual Asian fusion restaurant has an eclectic menu with sandwiches, fried rice, salads, pastries, coffee and tea, and more. It’s also very vegan/vegetarian-friendly.
  • Pickles & Swiss : Pickles & Swiss is a popular local sandwich shop. You can build your own sandwich, or choose from their menu of cold, hot, or panini sandwiches. They also offer soups, salads, and sides.
  • Taqueria Cuernavaca : If you’re craving authentic Mexican food, stop by this casual taqueria, which is just a couple blocks west of State Street. The menu has tacos, burritos, quesadillas, soups, and other special plates.

Do a Self-Guided Tour at Old Mission Santa Barbara

santa barbara trip

Next, it’s time to head about a mile inland to Old Mission Santa Barbara . If you drive, you can park at the free parking lot in front of the mission. If you don’t have a car, I highly recommend taking a rideshare at this point.

The walk from the courthouse to the Mission isn’t too exciting, and you’ll want to save some travel time to make the most of your short time in Santa Barbara.

Beginning in 1769, Spain built 21 missions in California over the span of about 50 years in an effort to expand its territory and convert Native Americans to Catholicism. While the mission era ended in the 1830s, the missions have been preserved and are open to the public. Many still hold religious services, as well.

Old Mission Santa Barbara (founded in 1786) was the 10th to be built, and is the only California mission that has continued under the guidance of the Franciscan Friars since its founding.

The Spanish Old Mission Santa Barbara was founded in 1786, and is the only California mission that has continued under the guidance of the Franciscan Friars since its founding.

The property is 15 acres, and features the mission church, a historic cemetery, a mausoleum, a museum of artwork and artifacts, and a variety of well-kept gardens.

Adult tickets are $15 (they can be purchased on-site), but you can also enjoy the exterior grounds for free. , and you can buy tickets on-site.

Visit the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden

santa barbara trip

The next stop during your day trip to Santa Barbara is the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden , which is about a 5-minute drive from the mission. There isn’t a safe walk or bike path, so if you don’t have a car, a rideshare is essential.

This garden expands over 78 acres, and offers gorgeous views of the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean.

There are 5.5 miles of paths through the property, and you can explore the Japanese teahouse and tea garden, a grove of redwood trees, the desert garden section, and much more. If you’re visiting during the spring, you may be lucky and catch the California Poppies blooming in the meadow section.

Adult tickets are $16, and you can buy them on-site. More information here .

Take a Coffee & Snack Break Downtown

santa barbara trip

Now it’s time to make your way back to Downtown Santa Barbara for a quick coffee break or bite to eat.

You’ll be exploring The Funk Zone next, so if you want to grab a cup of coffee or a sweet treat, check out these eateries in the area:

  • Dart Coffee Co . : This local coffee shop is located in the center of The Funk Zone, and has a beautiful garden space right across the street where you can soak in the sun and enjoy your coffee. Dart offers classic coffee and tea drinks, as well as specialty drinks like a churro cortado, lavender latte, and more.
  • Cajé Coffee Roasters ( E Haley Street Location ): Cajé is known for offering super unique (and very photo-worthy) specialty coffee and tea beverages. The cafe also has a small food menu, as well as more traditional coffee and tea drinks.
  • Chocolate Maya : If you have a sweet tooth, this local fine chocolate shop is for you! You’ll find delicious bonbons, chocolate bars, drinking chocolates, and more at Chocolate Maya.

Explore The Funk Zone and Sample Local Wines

The Funk Zone is Santa Barbara’s arts and culture district. This trendy industrial area is home to galleries of local artists, cool independent boutiques, restaurants, bars, and wine tasting rooms.

You can check out the map here , and be sure to also look at the directory of all the galleries and businesses to see if there are any specific spots you want to stop by.

Some cool galleries that are open to the public include GraySpace Art , Lancaster Wood Prints , and Silo118 .

After stopping by a few galleries, take a moment to relax and try some amazing wine from vineyards in Santa Barbara County and beyond. The Urban Wine Trail maps out some great tasting rooms in the area, and includes quite a few options in The Funk Zone.

santa barbara trip

Here are three spots to check out:

  • Santa Barbara Wine Collective : This tasting room offers a diverse selection of wines from vineyards located in Santa Barbara County and the surrounding area.
  • Pali Wine Co . : Lompoc-based Pali Wine has three brands, and produces its own wine from grapes sourced from its vineyards in Santa Rita Hills and Sonoma County.
  • The Valley Project : This local winery makes wine from the five diverse viticulture areas of Santa Barbara County – it’s a great spot to get a real taste of local wine!

Keep in mind that many of the wine tasting rooms close up shop on the earlier side (generally around 7pm to 9pm), so if you’re in the mood for wine, you’ll want to do that prior to dinner.

Where to Go for Dinner and Drinks

Once you’ve explored The Funk Zone, it’s time to grab something to eat! Here are a few great restaurants in the area:

  • Loquita : Loquita is an authentic Spanish restaurant offering hot and cold tapas, seasonal paella, wood-fired grilled seafood and meats, craft cocktails, and more. It is located in The Funk Zone, right on State Street.
  • The Lark : The Lark is situated in the middle of The Funk Zone inside a former fish market. The American restaurant offers a variety of seafood and meat dishes, as well as shareable appetizers.
  • Modern Times : Fun and eclectic Modern Times Brewery (which is located on State Street a few blocks north of The Funk Zone) has an amazing 100% plant-based menu featuring burgers, burritos, sandwiches, brussels sprouts, and more. Of course, the brewery also has an extensive selection of beers on tap.

santa barbara trip

If you’d like to grab drinks after dinner, here are two great spots in the area to check out:

  • Test Pilot : Test Pilot is a fun and festive tiki bar in The Funk Zone that specializes in delicious and unique craft cocktails.
  • Pearl Social : Right across the street from Test Pilot is Pearl Social, an intimate cocktail and music bar specializing in creative drinks.

What to Do with More Than a Day in Santa Barbara

If you’re able to spend more than 24 hours in Santa Barbara, here are a few additional activities to consider adding to your visit.

We have a guide for planning a weekend trip to Santa Barbara . If you have two days or more, you should read that!

Check Out the Local Museums

santa barbara trip

Santa Barbara is full of fascinating museums. Here are just a few that you can check out during your visit:

  • Santa Barbara Museum of Art : This downtown museum has approximately 25,000 works of art, which span over 5,000 years. Adult tickets cost $10.
  • Santa Barbara Maritime Museum : This family-friendly museum is less than a mile up the coast from Stearns Wharf, and educates visitors on over 13,000 years of history in the Santa Barbara Channel. Adult tickets cost $8.
  • Casa Del Herrero : This museum and historical Spanish revival architecture home was built in 1925. Tours of the estate (which is located in Montecito) can be booked online. Adult tickets cost $25.

Go Wine Tasting in the Greater Santa Barbara County

santa barbara trip

If you’re willing to go for a drive to the outer edges of Santa Barbara County, consider visiting some of the vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley and/or Los Olivos.

These towns are about a 45-minute drive from Downtown Santa Barbara, and the drive itself is incredibly scenic.

Some great wineries in the area include Koehler Winery (Los Olivos), Andrew Murray Vineyards (Los Olivos), Sunstone Winery (Santa Ynez), and Vincent Vineyards (Santa Ynez). The latter three take reservations (although they aren’t required), and Koehler only takes reservations for larger groups.

While you’re in the area, be sure to stop by the charming town of Los Olivos. It’s a great place to stop for lunch – check out Wine Merchant Cafe , Panino , or Nella Kitchen and Bar .

Visit the Local Beaches

santa barbara trip

If you’re visiting during the warmer months – or just want to spend some more time by the water – head to some of the amazing beaches in the county.

One great option that I highly recommend is Arroyo Burro Beach , which is about a 10-minute drive north of Downtown Santa Barbara. This picturesque beach (which is also known as Hendry’s Beach) is surrounded by gorgeous bluffs, and is also dog-friendly.

On top of the bluffs (at Douglas Family Preserve) there’s also an easy trail loop (just over a mile long) that offers beautiful views of the coast.

santa barbara trip

If you have more time during your stay, two other great beaches to check out are Leadbetter Beach (which is just about a 5-minute drive north of Downtown SB) and Butterfly Beach in Montecito (about a 10-minute drive south).

Go for a Hike

santa barbara trip

Santa Barbara boasts a ton of amazing hiking trails. If you have some extra time to spend in the area, consider checking out one of these hikes.

Keep in mind that all of the options below (excluding the Carpinteria Bluffs Loop) are located in Los Padres National Forest, and you must display an Adventure Pass in your car.

  • Carpinteria Bluffs Loop (2.7 miles, 104 feet elevation gain): This easy trail is a great option if you want to hike along the coast. It’s located in Carpinteria (about a 10-minute drive south of Downtown SB), and takes you right on the bluffs above the coast. You’ll also pass by the Carpinteria Seal Sanctuary! Note that there is a $10 parking fee.
  • Seven Falls Trail (3.2 miles, 803 feet elevation gain): The trailhead for this hike is just about a 15-minute drive from the middle of Downtown Santa Barbara. This trail leads to a series of waterfalls, which do require a bit of scrambling over rocks to access.
  • Inspiration Point (3.4 miles, 935 feet elevation gain): As the name suggests, this out-and-back trail leads you to Inspiration Point, where you get panoramic views of Santa Barbara. At the beginning, this trail follows the same path as the Seven Falls Trail, but then veers off before you get to Seven Falls. For a longer hike, you can combine these trails so that you can see both Seven Falls and Inspiration Point!
  • Romero Canyon Trail (6 miles, 1499 feet elevation gain): The Romero Canyon Trailhead is located closer to Montecito, and is about a 25-minute drive from Downtown Santa Barbara. The loop trail offers beautiful views of the ocean, and also goes along a creek.
  • Red Rocks to Gibraltar Dam Trail (6.5 miles, 830 feet elevation gain): This trail is located deeper in the Los Padres National Forest, and is about an hour drive from Downtown Santa Barbara. The loop trail passes by several natural pools, and you’ll get beautiful views of the surrounding mountains.

Where to Stay for a Night in Santa Barbara

If you plan on spending the night in Santa Barbara, here are a few great hotels to consider for your stay:

  • Palihouse Santa Barbara : This upscale boutique hotel in Downtown Santa Barbara is located just a few blocks off of State Street. It offers both rooms and suites (many with a patio or garden), and there is a pool, cocktail bar, and café on-site.
  • Hotel Santa Barbara : This hotel is conveniently located on State Street, and is super close to The Funk Zone and the beach. There are both rooms and suites available.
  • Kimpton Canary Hotel : This luxury hotel is located a block off State Street in the downtown area, and is within walking distance of a variety of eateries and bars. There is a rooftop pool and a restaurant on-site, and there are rooms and suites with balconies available.
  • Hotel Californian : Upscale Hotel Californian is right on the edge of The Funk Zone, and is a block away from the beach and Stearns Wharf. There are rooms and suites available, including some with ocean views. On-site, there is a café, restaurant, rooftop pool, and spa.
  • The Waterman : The Waterman is located in The Funk Zone, and is just a short walk away from the beach. There are queen and king bed rooms available, and there is also an outdoor pool on-site.

Getting Around Santa Barbara

We’ve talked a bit about getting around Santa Barbara above, but here are more details about the different transportation options in the city.

Downtown Santa Barbara and the surrounding area is very accessible on foot. Streets in the area have sidewalks, and the town is very flat – no need to worry about brutal hills!

However, once you start exploring the greater Santa Barbara area, you’ll need to find other transportation options. If you’re planning on following the above itinerary, as mentioned, you’ll need to either drive or call a rideshare to get to the Botanic Garden.

If you have more than a day in Santa Barbara, many of the additional activities recommended above (except for the museums) are not accessible on foot.

By Public Transit

Santa Barbara has a bus system called the Santa Barbara MTD that has a pretty good reach around Santa Barbara County – you can find the map and schedule here .

Taking the bus will add some extra time to your travel time, so it’s not the absolute best option if you only have a day in the city. I’d recommend walking, biking, or driving/taking a rideshare when possible, and only taking the bus if absolutely necessary.

If you do choose to take the bus, a day pass costs $6, and a one-way fare costs $1.75.

Keep in mind that, while the bus does cover a wide area, there aren’t any bus stops near the Botanic Garden or many of the hikes mentioned above (although there is a stop by the Carpinteria Bluffs Loop).

Biking is another great option to get around the greater downtown area, as the city is very bike-friendly. There are also plenty of bike trails in the area – this guide goes over options for all skill levels.

If you want to rent a bike, two highly-rated companies to check out are Wheel Fun Rentals and Santa Barbara Bikes To Go . The city also has an electric bike share system called BCycle .

By Car (Personal Vehicle or Rideshare)

If you’re planning on fully following the itinerary above and/or exploring the greater Santa Barbara area, I highly recommend traveling by car (either rideshare or your own vehicle) since some spots simply aren’t accessible by any other mode of transportation.

It’s easy to get a rideshare in Downtown Santa Barbara and the immediate surrounding area, so this is a great option if you don’t have your own car.

While parking in the downtown area can get a bit more hectic in the summer and on weekends, there are plenty of parking lots available (this real-time parking lot availability map is helpful), as well as street parking.

You’ll still be able to get around on foot quite a lot, so you won’t need to re-park too many times during your visit.

Getting to Santa Barbara from Los Angeles

From Los Angeles , there are two primary ways to get to Santa Barbara – here’s what you need to know about each option.

For most people driving to Santa Barbara from Los Angeles, the quickest and most straightforward route is via the 101 – it takes you right into Downtown Santa Barbara.

If you’re coming from Downtown LA , hop right on the 101 North, and the drive should be about an hour and 45 minutes (depending on traffic, of course!).

If you’re coming from the Westside (Santa Monica, Culver City, Beverly Hills, etc.), take the 405 North and connect to the 101 North and you’ll be on your way. The drive should take around an hour and 40 minutes.

Alternatively, you can take the train up to Santa Barbara via Amtrak. There are a variety of stations in LA county, primarily in The Valley.

Union Station (in Downtown LA) is the furthest south in the county, and there are also stations in Glendale, Burbank, Van Nuys, Chatsworth, Simi Valley, and Moorpark.

The Santa Barbara Amtrak Station is conveniently located in Downtown Santa Barbara.

From Union Station, the ride will take about two and a half hours.

You can find the most up-to-date schedule and buy tickets on the Amtrak website . One-way tickets fall in the $20 to $40 range, depending on the station you’re departing from and the seat you select.

Of course, you’ll need to be mindful of the last departure of the day .

Currently, the final train departs from Santa Barbara at 7:04 pm (but Amtrak schedules change – check the website for the most current information!). With that in mind, if you’re planning on staying later, the train might not be the best option for you.

Keep in mind that, if you don’t have a car, you’ll need to rely on other modes of transportation (besides walking or biking) to get to some of the spots in the itinerary below. We’ll go into more detail about how to get around Santa Barbara at the end of this guide.

When to Visit Santa Barbara

Short answer: whenever! There really isn’t a bad time to visit Santa Barbara.

Even in the winter, the temperature rarely drops below the 60s during the daytime, and the average temperature in the summer is warm but not uncomfortably hot (mid to high 70s).

If you want to hit that sweet spot when the weather is warmer but the city is less crowded, try visiting Santa Barbara between September and November or March through May.

Day trip to santa barbara – the only itinerary you need.

Santa Barbara is my all time favorite beach town in California! I am not sure if it’s the palm tree lined coast, beautiful golden beaches, sailboat-dotted horizon, or the fact that I got ENGAGED there.. but trust me friends, this place is amazing!

If you are doing a PCH road trip and are planning to just do a day trip to Santa Barbara, I got you covered with a jam-packed itinerary to see majority of what Santa Barbara has to offer! Not only that, but I also give tons of bonus ideas at the bottom of this guide incase you want to extend your trip to more than just a day.

Okay, lets dive in!

There is a chance this free guide on a Santa Barbara Day Trip contains affiliate links. This means, that if you make a purchase through these links I may make a small commission (at no extra cost to you) that goes towards little Rosie’s dog treats!

Where is Santa Barbara & How Do I Get There?

Santa Barbara is a beautiful, coastal town just 95 miles north of Los Angeles. There are loads of activities in the area like wine tasting, sailing, bike riding, surfing, and so much more!

To get there, you can either fly into the small airport in Santa Barbara (which usually only has connecting flights, unless you are flying from major airports like SFO or LAX), or you can fly into LAX and take the extremely scenic drive up PCH! The drive between LAX and downtown Santa Barbara can be anywhere from 1.5 hours to 3 hours, depending on how bad that LA traffic is 😉

If you plan on doing a PCH road trip where you visit a few different California towns, my 7 Day California Itinerary covers everything from San Francisco to Los Angeles!

Another option if you don’t want to rent a car is to take the AMTRAK train from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara! The duration is only around 2.5 hours and is extremely affordable (around $20 each way). And the best part…. no traffic!! 🙂

TIP: If you plan to fly to Los Angeles and drive to Santa Barbara, try your hardest to not land during rush hour traffic! It will drastically impact the length of your drive!!

Must Pack Items for Santa Barbara

I never want to bore you with a long packing list, because you came here to read about the perfect Santa Barbara day trip! BUT I always list a few items that I think are absolute must-haves for this specific trip:

  • My go-to Travel Shoe: Rothy’s white tennis shoes are seriously the only shoes I bring on vacations because they are so comfortable, don’t need to break them in, I can throw them in the wash if they get dirty, and they go with casual outfits like jeans or cute sundresses!
  • Cute flat brim hat: This is my favorite hat that looks sooo flattering on! I’m not kidding when I say I have this hat in every single color that they offer, ha! It’s very sturdy too so it never gets squished in my suitcase.
  • Sunblock Packets: These things are the best!! It’s sunblock that comes in a little ketchup-size packet so you can easily re-apply on the go!
  • Cute and Affordable Pair of Sunglasses: If you like the Cateye shape, you MUST get these!! They come in both black and brown and guys… they are truly adorable. You would never believe how inexpensive they are either!

Day Trip to Santa Barbara Itinerary

Santa Barbara is one of my favorite coastal towns in California and you has so much to do to fill up your day trip to Santa Barbara! I traveled here for the first time in October 2020 and I already know I will be going back time and time again. 🙂

Here is my recommended day trip to Santa Barbara itinerary that has a little bit of everything that Santa Barbara has to offer!!

Grab Coffee in the Funk Zone

If you get their early enough, grab coffee and a light breakfast in the “funk zone,” which is Santa Barbara’s quirky downtown area. There are tons of unique restaurants, wine bars, trendy boutiques, and murals everywhere!

When I traveled to Santa Barbara, I was confused on what part of downtown is technically the “funk zone” since the downtown area is quite big! According to the locals, it is the area between the ocean and Highway 1 (only 3-4 blocks).

Plug in Helena Avenue Bakery into your maps to grab a coffee and a delicious, homemade pastry and that will put you right in the center of the funk zone. 🙂

Rent Beach Cruisers and Cruise Along the Boardwalk

Santa Barbara’s coast is incredibly scenic with tons of palm trees, sail boats dotting the horizon, and a beautiful beach. The best way to experience Santa Barbara is renting some beach cruisers to explore the coastline!

Beach Cruisers can be rented by the hour or by the day, and are extremely affordable – roughly $10/hour per bike. Click here to check out a local Santa Barbara company!

Girls trip to San Diego - Renting Beach bikes on the board walk

Test Out Some Wine Bars Along the Urban Wine Trail

The Urban Wine Trail is a bundle of wine bars across the different neighborhoods in Santa Barbara! This trail originally only had 8 wine bars when it started in 2007, but now has over 30 to try out!

The largest bundle that are within walking distance are in the “funk zone,” and where is I would recommend going since you are already in that area! Here is a list of all the wineries on the Urban Wine Trail.

TIP: Skip lunch and grab appetizers at a few of the wine bars!

Rent a Sailboat at Sunset with SB Sail

And for the best part of your Santa Barbara day trip… charter your own private sail boat (with a captain) and cruise the Santa Barbara coast with SB Sail !

My (now) Fiancé and I did this and it was the ultimate bucket list experience! This is actually how he proposed to me 🙂

We rented a private, chartered sailboat for a 2 hour sunset sail and it was truly magical. You are able to bring your own wine and food on board and just enjoy the gorgeous views. We even saw a huge pod of dolphins playing in front of the boat!

Even though this is more of a splurge, it is not as much as you would think it would cost for a private sailboat charter! ESPECIALLY if you are traveling with a group (6 people can fit on the boats). Click here to check out pricing and the different boats they offer!

Just imagine sailing the California coastline during sunset, wine in hand, watching dolphins frolicking in front of the boat… you can thank me later!

TIP: Grab a bottle (or two) of your favorite wine from the Urban Wine Trail to bring with you on the boat!

Head to dinner either in Funk Town or Stonehouse

So if you are traveling solo or with some friends, I would just grab dinner anywhere in the Funk Zone! There are tons of really amazing restaurants to choose from, depending on what type of food your craving.

If you are traveling to Santa Barbara for a special occasion or a romantic getaway, you MUST go to the Stonehouse at San Ysidro Ranch ! It was truly the most magical dinner we have ever had.. with a string lit patio, unique architecture, 5* service, and the food… OH MY THE FOOD!

This restaurant is in a local area of town, so you will definitely need to take an Uber / Lyft or drive around 15 minutes.

Bonus Ideas to Extend your Santa Barbara Day Trip

If you want to spend more than just a day in Santa Barbara, lucky for you there are tons of other ideas! When I traveled to Santa Barbara, I actually only spent one day there, and then road tripped to Solvang for some wine tasting. Here are some ideas if you want to make a weekend out of it:

Day trip to Solvang

Solvang is a Danish-inspired town only 45 minutes from Santa Barbara! The entire town is absolutely adorable with Danish bakeries, Danish architecture, windmills, and surrounded by the Santa Ynez wine region. Make sure you stop at Paula’s Pancake House in downtown Solvang for an authentic Danish breakfast. 🙂

   Wine tasting near Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara is surrounded by delicious wine to try out! You could definitely drive to the wine regions since they are so close, but would not be wise to drive if you plan on doing any of the wine tastings. There are tons of tours that will pick you up from your hotel in Santa Barbara and drive you to a few wineries to try out. Click here to check them out!

Psst.. like wine tasting? Be sure to check out my guides on wine tasting in other California wine regions like Napa , Temecula , and Paso Robles !

Boat Tour to Channel Islands National Park

Channel Islands is a national park off the coast of Santa Barbara! There are tons of boat tours that will take you out to the island and allow you to hike, kayak, or snorkel for the day before bringing you back. This is really an entire day excursion, so you can’t fit this into your day trip to Santa Barbara unless you want this to be the only thing on the itinerary, ha! Click here to check out some tours.

Hiking Along the Coastline

Santa Barbara has  mountain ranges surrounding the area, making it the perfect place to go for a hike! There are hiking trails along the coast, inland on the mountains, or some waterfalls to check out. Click here for a list of best hikes in Santa Barbara!

Psst.. Like adventurous travel with tons of hiking? Yosemite National Park is in California and is amazing!! Click here to read my 2 Days in Yosemite Itinerary!

Okay, that’s a wrap! Santa Barbara is (biasedly because of my engagement) my favorite California beach town and I hope it’s yours too! The unique Spanish architecture, fun downtown, beautiful beach, and sailboats everywhere make this the perfect day trip.

The Perfect Three-Day Weekend in Santa Barbara

Travel + Leisure is exploring America one three-day weekend at a time. Here's what to do on a short trip to Santa Barbara, California.

Megan Barber is a writer, editor, and executive leader who tackles content in the health, outdoor, travel, and food space. Her work appears in publications like Travel + Leisure , Curbed , Condé Nast Traveler , Ski , Powder , and 5280 magazines.

There's a reason Santa Barbara's been called the American Riviera. Pleasant temperatures year-round, sunny beaches, and gorgeous Spanish architecture make this sophisticated stopover a dream. Not sure how to spend three days exploring all the city has to offer? Here's an ideal itinerary, highlighting some of the best Santa Barbara attractions .

You'll need a car to best appreciate Santa Barbara, so grab a rental from the Santa Barbara airport. Hop onto the 101 and head to the Spanish Garden Inn , a boutique hotel with a great pool and lush gardens. Before dinner, stop by the 200-year-old Santa Barbara Mission , where you can take a short, self-guided tour and enjoy a rose garden.

Once you've had your fill of flowers, drive down State Street, the town's main drag. Feel free to walk around if something strikes your fancy, or head straight to Toma , a trendy, waterfront Italian spot serving up delicious tuna cones, gnocchi, and scallops.

After dinner, stretch your legs by walking Stearns Wharf , the town's pier. It's a bit touristy, but provides great views. If you want to go out afterward, head to the Good Lion for on-point cocktails or to Intermezzo for wine; both spots are walking distance from your hotel.

Beat the crowds and get up early for breakfast at Renaud's , a French bakery that serves top-notch chocolate croissants and eggs. Then get ready for a day at the beach. While Butterfly Beach is a top pick for sunbathing, head to Leadbetter for water sports.

Rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard from the Paddle Sports Center and feel free to use Leadbetter's grassy areas, picnic tables, restrooms, and open-air showers. Take a quick sun break and drive five minutes for lunch at Lilly's Taqueria , an under-the-radar taco joint. Try the carne asada or the cachete (beef cheek). If you have to keep your toes in the sand, the Shoreline Café works for a cold margarita and palatable food.

Head back to the hotel to clean up, then drive 10 minutes to Montecito. Walk the shops on Coast Village Road. Don't miss K Frank , an upscale, family-run boutique.

Drive up the hill for a splurge dinner at the San Ysidro Ranch . Surrounded by twinkling lights and flowers, the Stonehouse serves guests year-round on the deck, which has ocean views, a wood-burning fireplace, and heated stone flooring. Linger over a perfectly cooked pork chop, flambéed tableside crepes, and an extensive dessert wine list.

Your last day in Santa Barbara is all about wine. If you feel like driving, make the trek to the cute wine town of Los Olivos and catch a tri-tip sandwich at Cold Springs Tavern on your way back.

Back in Santa Barbara, a once-industrial area called the "Funk Zone" has transformed into a walkable neighborhood full of art galleries and nearly 20 boutique wine tasting rooms. Try Corks & Crowns (on Sundays there's a sparkling wine and cupcake flight), Kunin Wines (try the 'Paper Star' Rhone Blend), and the alien-themed tasting room Area 5.1 (drink the Conspiracy Red).

Finish the day with a two-hour sunset cruise aboard the Double Dolphin sailboat. You'll get views of the Santa Barbara coastline and have a chance to see dolphins and maybe even whales. Disembark and walk over to Brophy Brothers for a late dinner at the harbor. Order the clam chowder, oyster shooters, and the cold combo.

19 Best Things To Do in Santa Barbara

Updated April 15, 2024

Most visitors come to Santa Barbara to relax along the beach . But when they don't have their feet in the sand, you'll find them trying on the latest fashions on State Street , gazing at watercolors in the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and

East Beach East Beach free

There are four major beaches in Santa Barbara: Leadbetter, Arroyo Burro, West and East. While Leadbetter has the harbor, Arroyo Burro is best for travelers with dogs and West Beach is home to the fireworks on the Fourth of July, East Beach is the best stretch to catch some rays without being mobbed by crowds. What's more, it's considered one of the best California beaches  home to some of the best Santa Barbara hotels .

The shoreline may still fill up more on the weekends, but East Beach is a bit more removed from State Street and the downtown area than the other beaches, offering more space to stretch out or take a walk along the sandy shores. You may have to protect yourself from the occasional rogue volleyball though, as there are more than a dozen sandy courts here.

In the northwest part of town just four blocks from State Street , the Santa Barbara Mission offers visitors a glimpse at the city's early origins.

Founded in 1786, this Californian mission was Spain's 10th attempt to colonize the region and convert the native inhabitants to Roman Catholicism. Still a functioning house of worship, the Santa Barbara Mission boasts a museum filled with colonial artifacts and early photographs of the area.

Neighboring the Andree Clark Bird Refuge in the east part of downtown, the Santa Barbara Zoo gives visitors a taste of the exotic just a block from the sandy shore. Recent visitors said the small zoo packs a lot of entertaining creatures into a clean, well-designed property. The zoo also features attractions like a 26-foot rock climbing wall and the animal kitchen where visitors can observe animal food preparation.

Permanent residents of the zoo include anteaters, leopards, gorillas and penguins. But the biggest celebrities here are the native California condors and endangered Amur leopards. Despite the zoo's small size, many visitors praise the diversity of the animals. Many also reported visiting for more than just the creatures and praised the animal encounters, the play area and the barnyard. Others were pleased with the facility's manageable size, saying it was perfect for small children.

Try to stop by when you can also take a peek into the clock tower in the Bisno Schall Clock Gallery to see the impressive clock, which still works. It is only open to the public Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., and on Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Surrounding the clock is an impressive 60-foot mural depicting the history of timekeeping. Santa Barbara Botanic Garden Santa Barbara Botanic Garden

North of downtown, the 78-acre Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is a refuge for bored beachgoers and nature enthusiasts alike. Visitors walk on unpaved paths through what, at times, looks like unremarkable brush. However, what you see here is carefully designed. According to the official website , the garden is committed to protecting plants unique to central California's coastal region – indifferent to their individual beauty. And it's this diversity (along with Santa Barbara's stunning mountain views) that differentiates this botanical park from others.

Highlights of the garden include the historic Mission Dam and aqueduct built in 1807, an authentic Japanese teahouse and tea garden and a redwood grove. In all, there are almost 6 miles of paths to explore and more than 1,000 types of plants. Recent visitors praised the peace and quiet found at the garden, calling it a great place to recharge. Others recommended the attraction if you enjoy walking trails and warned that this is not your typical, landscaped botanic garden.

The gardens are home to more than 3,000 plants from all over the world, including its namesake lotus flowers.

Because the garden is located in a residential neighborhood of Santa Barbara, the only way to visit is via a docent-led tour. On the two-hour tour, you'll see bromeliad and fern gardens, cactus and succulent gardens, a Japanese garden, an aloe garden and whimsical statuary. You'll also spot a 25-foot round horticultural clock featuring the signs of the zodiac and a collection of rare cycads, an unusual plant genus that has been around since the Jurassic period.

Depending when you visit, you may get the chance to watch a jazz concert, an opera, a ballet performance or even a magic show. Originally built in 1923 and remodeled in 2013, the theater is considered an architectural gem and a city landmark thanks to its distinct Spanish Colonial Revival style. Inside, the Lobero Theatre features classic elements like red velvet seats and columns, as well as an intricately designed ceiling. It can seat about 600 audience members, and past visitors said they especially enjoyed its intimate atmosphere.

The theater is located in downtown Santa Barbara, so many visitors like to grab a bite to eat before the show at one of the surrounding restaurants. Ticket prices vary based on performances and seats. The box office is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Saturday from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase on the theater website  as well.

Shoreline Park Shoreline Park free

Whether you're traveling to Santa Barbara with kids or just looking for a bit of exercise, Shoreline Park is the place to stop. This nearly 15-acre park sits on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean and offers plenty of amenities for park-goers, including barbeque areas, picnic tables, benches and a playground. Pets are also welcome at the park, and there are walking paths for leisurely strolls. The park is also a prime place to view marine life as there are often dolphins visible in the water below (and whales if you look through the binoculars). There are also stairs for easy access to the beach below, where kids may enjoy searching for critters in the tide pools.

The park is frequented by locals and tourists alike and is sure to be crowded on nice weekend days, but past visitors said the views make the park worth a stop no matter the crowds. The park is located about 2 miles from downtown, and there are two parking lots on-site. Access is free.

Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History

Santa Barbara visitors highly recommend the city's Museum of Natural History for its educational exhibits and knowledgeable staff. Some museum highlights include Mammal Hall – where visitors can learn about the region's mammals through intricate dioramas and even touch bones – as well as the Space Sciences center – which offers a 3D star map and exciting lessons on gravity – and the Gladwin Planetarium. Visitors were especially impressed with the Chumash Life exhibit, which details the lives of the region's native people. There is also a Curiosity Lab perfect for young children interested in learning about regional animals and natural features in a hands-on manner.

The museum is located just about a mile from downtown on Stearns Wharf. Admission costs $18 for adults, $16 for teens and seniors and $12 for children ages 2 to 12. The museum is open Wednesday through Monday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. You can purchase tickets in advance on the museum's website .

Inspiration Point Inspiration Point

A trek to Inspiration Point via the Tunnel and Jesusita trails brings hikers through scenic Mission Canyon and rewards visitors with stunning vistas throughout the journey. Past visitors especially enjoyed seeing colorful wildflowers along the way. Upon reaching the summit, hikers are greeted by panoramic views of the ocean and the surrounding Santa Ynez Mountains.

This nearly 4-mile out-and-back trail is rated as moderate and takes about two hours to complete. The hike starts as a paved road before turning into a trail on which there are a few switchbacks; past hikers said the trail has a steady incline all the way to the summit. The trail is open to dogs, so hikers can bring their furry friends as long as they are leashed. There are parking spaces available at the trailhead, which is located about 4 miles north of downtown, or visitors can opt for street parking along Tunnel Road.

The 6 best day trips from Santa Barbara: vinyards, heritage, and incredible coastal scenery

Apr 5, 2022 • 7 min read

Traveller resting at breathtaking landscape on Anacapa Island. Anacapa Island is one of the five islands which form the Channel Islands National Park, near Los Angeles, California, USA

From the Channel Islands to LA, explore beyond Santa Barbara with these fun day trip ideas © benedek / Getty Images

It's hard to tire of Santa Barbara 's historic architecture and easy-to-stroll downtown, but the adorable towns, vineyard-filled valleys, and impressive state and national parks that literally surround the city shouldn't be missed.

Leave plenty of time in your itinerary to explore Santa Barbara and its immediate surrounds, but also save some time for a couple of day trips in the region. There is a lot here, from deserted beaches to extraordinary vineyards , the renowned paradise of Ojai and off-shore islands that seem a world away. You can even go on an adventure by train to LA.

Enjoy the rich landscapes and varied nature of Channel Islands National Park

Why go?:  Raw nature on nearby islands.

Just visible on the horizon off Santa Barbara, this seemingly remote national park is part of an eight-island chain of offshore islands that stretch along a swath of the Southern California coast. Imagine hiking, kayaking, scuba diving, camping, whale-watching or even just lounging on a deserted beach, and doing it all amid a raw, edge-of-the-world landscape. Rich in unique flora and fauna, tide pools and kelp forests, the islands are home to over 150 plant and animal species found nowhere else in the world, earning them the nickname "California’s Galapagos." Daytrips to two of the five islands in the national park run almost daily.

How to get to Channel Islands National Park: Anacapa and Santa Cruz , the park’s most popular islands, are an hour’s boat ride from Ventura Harbor, about 30 miles by car southeast of Santa Barbara. Round-trip excursions, with plenty of time on shore to explore an island, cost under $70 for an adult.

Three people ride bikes down a road through beautiful vineyards that stretch into the distance

Admire the beauty of Santa Barbara Wine Country

Why go?: Some of Southern California’s best wineries, set amidst lovely rural scenery.

Amber-colored hills striated with grapevines and shaded by oaks, two-lane roads wending through endless beauty, and wineries aplenty offering tastings , it’s easy to pile on the praise about Santa Barbara's wine country. More than 100 local wineries make choices seem daunting, so simplify life and focus on the Santa Ynez Valley ’s small towns, which include Los Olivos, Buellton, Santa Ynez, and Ballard. All are clustered within 10 miles of one another, making it easy to stop, taste, shop, and eat.

The wine country northwest of Santa Barbara is made for do-it-yourself exploring. Vintners include longtime landowners and farmers who are enjoying the optimal climate, as well as recent vineyard owners who are following their passion. They will all happily share their knowledge and intriguing personal histories.

A half-day trip will allow you to see one winery or tasting room, have lunch and return to Santa Barbara. Otherwise, make it a full day and plan to have lunch and make a few stops before returning to the city. Full-day wine-tasting tours from Santa Barbara average $100 to $200 per person. For inspiration, watch  Sideways (2004), a film about misadventures while wine-tasting in this region.

How to get to Santa Barbara Wine Country: From Santa Barbara, you can drive to Wine Country in less than an hour via rural Hwy 154.

Train traveling over a railroad track bridge that rises high above a beach

Gaviota is a wild stretch of the Pacific coast

Why go?: Raw Pacific beauty, a great beach, and an awesome landmark.

Leave the upscale hubbub of Santa Barbara behind and in barely half an hour, you can enjoy a wild stretch of the Pacific coast, including an excellent beach and a soaring landmark of California history. Successor to the Central Pacific Railroad, which built the first transcontinental railroad east from the state, the Southern Pacific Railroad developed the state from north to south for decades in the 19th and 20th centuries.

One of the company’s greatest achievements was the coastline between San Francisco and Los Angeles. And the railroad trestle at Gaviota was a crowning achievement when it was completed in 1900. Over 800ft long and 75ft tall, the bridge soars over Gaviota State Park, which has a wide beach isolated from the rest of the coast. Spend a few hours here lazing the day away, swimming, hiking, and surfing. The action stops as everybody watches trains thunder over the trestle.

How to get to Gaviota: The state beach and trestle are a straight-shot 33 miles by car due west of Santa Barbara on Hwy 101.

Pink sky view from the hills of Ojai, California

Ojai is the best day trip for foodies

Why go?: A paradisical place with a fab vibe and great eats.

Hollywood director Frank Capra chose the Ojai Valley to represent the mythical Shangri-La in his 1937 film Lost Horizon . Today Ojai (pronounced "OH-hi," from the Chumash word for "moon") remains a bit of SoCal paradise, especially if you’re into fine organic food, new age beliefs, art, BoHo chic, or just ready to luxe out at a day spa. Ojai Avenue (the town’s main drag), is lined with galleries, boutiques – many selling the region’s extraordinary food and wine – and vegetarian bistros. The year-round farmers' market (Sunday mornings) is a utopia for foodies.

Vestiges of Ojai’s hippie roots can be found in whole-grain bakeries, organic old oil producers, and the like. If you’re up for more than a stroll around town, enormous Los Padres National Forest is immediately north and has hiking trails of every kind.

How to get to Ojai: Ojai is a 34-mile drive from Santa Barbara by car. Give yourself about an hour for the journey as the section on meandering Hwy 150 is slow and scenic. There are good bike rides once there.

Two women walk across a road lined with buildings with Danish-style architecture

Explore Danish heritage in Solvang

Why go?: Fudge and kitsch.

Lovers of kitsch can OD at Solvang, a fantasyland dedicated to a mythical version of Denmark that may baffle actual Danes. Statues of the Little Mermaid and Hans Christian Andersen are possibly the most reality-based attractions in this village, which entertains throngs of day-trippers lured in off Hwy 101.

But if you’ve got a hankering for fudge, taffy, pastries, snow-globe tableaus, bubble-gum-flavored ice cream, out-of-season Christmas ornaments and much, much more, then you’ll love wandering the gingerbready streets. Keep the whole family happy by combining a stop in Solvang with visits to the nearby Santa Ynes Valley’s wineries.

How to get to Solvang: Solvang is 35 miles from Santa Barbara, and the drive time is around 45 minutes.

Downtown Los Angeles is the best day trip by train

Why go?: See the heart of LA without getting lost in traffic.

Take an early morning train to one of LA’s top sights, LA Union Station , and then spend a few hours exploring Downtown LA , which is all easily reached by foot from the station. Start in El Pueblo de Los Angeles , where LA’s first colonists settled in 1781. The namesake state park offers info on the preserved and restored buildings. Nearby, the 1928 City Hall is the phallic-shaped landmark made famous by the old Dragnet TV shows and myriad other productions. A modern landmark is the Walt Disney Concert Hall with its wild and soaring stainless-steel exterior by architect Frank Gehry. Broad is the enormous modern art museum with thousands of works by big names. For lunch, choose between the old-time Mexican places on Olvera St; Grand Central Market , the buzzing bazaar with some of LA’s top vendors; or the famous French dip sandwiches at decades-old Phillippe’s .

How to get to Downtown LA: Don’t drive – the journey might be quicker, but the traffic will end any vacation good-vibes you were feeling. Instead take Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner , which offers commuter-style service on comfortable trains. Enjoy glimpses of coast, fertile fields, weird rock formations near Simi Valley and the endless fascinating sprawl that is LA from the big train windows. A morning departure from Santa Barbara will get you into LA’s lovely and historic Union Station in under 3 hours, just in time for lunch. Make the most of your tour of DTLA  and catch an evening train back for some late-night cocktails in Santa Barbara.

The Perfect Santa Barbara Day Trip Itinerary

Santa Barbara has long been one of my favorite destinations in the Golden State. While I’d recommend staying for a bit longer if you can, you can see a lot of the area with just one day. If you’re doing a California road trip or just looking for a fun day trip from a nearby city, it definitely can’t be missed!

In this guide, I’ll walk you through the ultimate Santa Barbara day trip itinerary. I’ve included some of the city’s most popular attractions, as well as my favorite eateries to enjoy along the way!

View of the Santa Barbara Courthouse from the Clock Tower

The Ultimate Santa Barbara Day Trip

Here’s a breakdown of how to spend one day in Santa Barbara. You’ll start with breakfast and coffee in town before taking a short drive over to a nearby easy hike. After that, you’ll spend the rest of the day exploring all that Santa Barbara has to offer!

If you’re thinking of planning a longer vacation, be sure to check out my guide on how to plan the perfect Santa Barbara weekend getaway !

Get Breakfast and Coffee in Town

Start with getting breakfast and a caffeine boost in town. There are a ton of great eateries and coffee shops all throughout Santa Barbara, but here are a few of my favorites:

  • Cajé Coffee (Multiple Locations): Cajé (pictured below) is a coffee shop that also offers simple breakfast items, such as bagels and avocado toast. Full disclosure: the coffee drinks are pricey (and that’s coming from someone who has to deal with LA coffee prices!), but it’s worth the splurge for a one-time treat – I highly recommend The Burnout. If the weather is nice, I recommend going to the location at 1316 State Street, where they have a really beautiful outdoor patio.
  • Jeannine’s Restaurant & Bakery (Multiple Locations): If you want more of a sit down, table service type of experience, head over to Jeannine’s. This popular restaurant cooks up classic breakfast dishes, including benedicts, pancakes, waffles, and more. If you happen to be taking the train for your day trip, there is a location within walking distance of the Santa Barbara train station.
  • Green Table (Downtown Santa Barbara): Green Table is an organic vegetarian restaurant with lots of great options for both vegans and vegetarians. The health-conscious menu includes a breakfast sandwich, avocado toast, muffins, smoothies, and more. They also have great matcha lattes.

Do an Easy Hike at Arroyo Burro Beach

After breakfast, you’ll drive about 10 minutes outside of Downtown Santa Barbara to hike near Arroyo Burro Beach. The Arroyo Burro Beach Loop is a 1.3 mile trail on top of a coastal bluff. It overlooks Arroyo Burro Beach, and you get stunning views of the coastline.

This trail is super easy – there’s no elevation gain, and the path is clear and wide. I’d call it more of a walk than a hike! That said, you will be walking on bark chips and dirt, so closed-toed shoes are a good idea.

Street parking is available on and around Medcliff Road. The Arroyo Burro Beach Loop trailhead is located at the corner of Medcliff and Selrose Lane.

Winding street near Arroyo Burro Beach

Visit Old Mission Santa Barbara

Once you’ve finished your hike, it’s time to head back into town, where you’ll hang out for the rest of the day. First, stop by Old Mission Santa Barbara , which was the 10th mission to be built in the state. The historic landmark is open for self-guided tours, and adult tickets currently cost $15. During the tour, you can explore the interior of the mission church, as well as the mausoleum, cemetery, gardens, and museum.

Those that aren’t interested in the tour can still check out the exterior of the building and the surrounding property. I also highly recommend checking out the Mission Rose Garden , a small garden that has an abundance of rose varieties. It’s located right across the street, and is free to visit.

There is a large parking lot in front of the property. You can also park on one of the surrounding neighborhood streets.

The mission sometimes closes for weddings and other events, so it’s a good idea to check the website before visiting. If you’re visiting on Saturday, also note that tours aren’t available from 12:00pm to 2:30pm.

Grab Lunch in Downtown Santa Barbara

Next, you’ll want to drive to the heart of Downtown Santa Barbara and grab lunch around State Street – the main shopping district in town. There are a ton of great lunch spots, but here are two of my top recommendations (both of which are near the next destination on the itinerary:

  • Santa Barbara Public Market : This food hall is home to a varied selection of food vendors. I absolutely love Fala Bar , a vegan restaurant that serves falafel burgers, salads, sandwiches, and more. Corazon Cocina is also the perfect option for anyone craving Mexican food.
  • The Daisy : The Daisy (pictured below) is one of my favorite places to grab lunch in Santa Barbara. I love the falafel plate, and their fries are perfect. The menu also features sandwiches, salads, bowls, and more, and there are great options for vegans and vegetarians.

If you’re down to walk the rest of the day (which I recommend!), I suggest parking your car on a neighborhood street or at a public lot near Downtown SB and leaving it there for the day. There are lots of public lots, including City Lot #3 . If you street park, be sure to pay close attention to the street signs to make sure you’re able to park there for the day. For reference, the walk from Downtown Santa Barbara to Stearns Wharf is about a mile long.

Explore the Santa Barbara County Courthouse

One spot that you absolutely can’t miss during your day trip to Santa Barbara is the Santa Barbara County Courthouse . While it might seem weird to visit a courthouse, this is one of the most popular attractions in the area – and personally one of my favorite spots to explore!

This 1929 Spanish-Colonial style courthouse is fully operational, but visitors are welcome to check out the building (for free!). While you are visiting, be sure to go up the Clock Tower for amazing, 360-degree views of the city and beyond. You can either climb the stairs or take the elevator. You’ll also want to check out the elaborate murals in the Mural Room, and explore the Sunken Gardens. If you’re visiting on a weekend, you can also join the free docent-led tour, which starts at 2:00 pm and lasts one hour.

The main tourist entrance to the courthouse is located under the Great Arch off Anacapa Street. Note that you will need to go through a security screening during court business hours.

Sunken Gardens at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse

Shop at State Street

After checking out the courthouse, walk over to State Street. This palm-tree lined street runs right through the heart of downtown, eventually leading to the wharf. As you walk, you’ll see plenty of beautiful Spanish and Mediterranean-inspired architecture. There are also tons of antique stores, local shops, and other hidden gems, as well as more recognizable brand-name stores.

While you’re there, I recommend stopping by Urban Flea Market , which has a ton of fun and funky vintage clothes, home decor, vinyl, and other goods. I also love exploring Italian Pottery Outlet , which sells kitchenware, ceramics, and other creative gifts and home goods.

If you need a caffeine boost or a sweet treat, I also highly recommend stopping by LOKUM , which is located on State Street just a block from the courthouse. They sell authentic Turkish coffee, as well as amazing baklava and Turkish delights (I love the orange and hazelnut delight!). The space is also beautifully decorated!

Interior of Lokum Coffee and Dessert Shop

Stroll Down Stearns Wharf

Continue walking down State Street to make your way to Stearns Wharf, which dates back to 1872. This 2300-foot wharf is California’s oldest wharf. As you walk down, you’ll get beautiful views of the ocean, as well as the Santa Barbara coast.

Grab Drinks at the Funk Zone

You can’t spend a day in Santa Barbara without stopping by the Funk Zone, which is the center of Santa Barbara’s arts, food, and wine scene. It’s worth spending some time strolling through the area to check out some of the local stores and galleries – I suggest stopping by Mason Street Gallery and The Shopkeepers (a clothing and home goods store).

Many of the tasting rooms on Santa Barbara’s Urban Wine Trail are also located in the Funk Zone. This trail serves as a map for wineries and tasting rooms in the area, many of which source grapes locally from wine regions like the Santa Ynez Valley (and the greater Santa Barbara County area) and Paso Robles.

Within the Funk Zone, one of my favorites is the family-operated Pali Wine Company , which has a really nice outdoor patio area. This winery specializes in Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays, with grapes sourced primarily from Santa Barbara County.

Another great spot is The Valley Project , which produces wine with grapes from the five distinct viticulture areas in the county. Both wineries give you a great taste of the local wine scene (without having to make the trek up to wineries in Santa Ynez Valley – although I do recommend that for another day!).

Mural of a Tiger outside of Tyger Tyger in the Funk Zone

End Your Day Trip with Dinner

Finally, finish off your mini Santa Barbara trip with dinner at one of the city’s amazing restaurants. I have two recommendations: one in the Funk Zone, and another in Montecito (which you’d need to drive or take a rideshare to – it’s about 10 minutes away):

  • Loquita (The Funk Zone): Loquita is a well-loved Spanish restaurant offering paellas (including a vegetarian option), seafood entrees, classic tapas dishes, and so much more – all in a beautifully designed space! They also have amazing cocktails, including a varied selection of gin and tonics.
  • Oliver’s (Montecito): Oliver’s (pictured below) is a fully vegan restaurant, and one of my favorite dinner spots in the area. Enjoy amazing food and drinks under the string lights at their beautiful patio, or in the sleek dining room. I highly recommend the braised mushroom ravioli and the artichoke crab cakes, as well as the Billy Billy or Oaxacan Old Fashioned to drink.

For a year, I called Santa Barbara home. It was honestly one of the best years of my life and one I look back on so fondly. My partner and I could walk on the Santa Barbara beaches multiple times a week, watch dolphins and seals flourish in the ocean, and soak in some incredible sunsets.

All in all, it was a magical time. As you plan your trip to Santa Barbara, I hope this guide to the best beaches in Santa Barbara brings you joy and wonder as you sit under the sunny skies on the California coast.

These beaches in Santa Barbara are not in any particular order, so don’t view this as a ranking system.

<p>It is one of my favorite beaches in Santa Barbara, though I think I only went into the water here once or twice. I really like it because of the views. My girlfriend did a Valentine’s dinner here, and the flowers along the bike path are simply exquisite. Taking photos with them in the foreground and the beach in the background is picture-perfect! </p><p>I highly recommend everyone who goes to <a href="https://explorewithalec.com/santa-barbara-beaches/">Santa Barbara</a> to spend time at Butterfly Beach. </p><p>One thing to note is there is not a lot of beach space, so there could be zero dry sand when it’s a high tide. But during low tide, you’ll have tons of space to lounge around. </p>

1. Butterfly Beach

It is one of my favorite beaches in Santa Barbara, though I think I only went into the water here once or twice. I really like it because of the views. My girlfriend did a Valentine’s dinner here, and the flowers along the bike path are simply exquisite. Taking photos with them in the foreground and the beach in the background is picture-perfect!

I highly recommend everyone who goes to Santa Barbara to spend time at Butterfly Beach.

One thing to note is there is not a lot of beach space, so there could be zero dry sand when it’s a high tide. But during low tide, you’ll have tons of space to lounge around.

<p>It is the most popular beach in the area simply due to its location. </p><p>Most locals visit East Beach as there’s a lot of parking – both in a parking lot and along the road. Plus, it’s close to many hotels that line the beach. Furthermore, there’s a TON of beach space, so you won’t need to crowd others (unless it’s a holiday weekend). For the active folks, there are volleyball courts to play on. </p><p>PS: The famous McConnells Ice Cream is just up the street from Stearns Wharf. It’s fantastic and a must-have when visiting <a href="https://explorewithalec.com/santa-barbara-whale-watching-california/">Santa Barbara</a> beaches. </p>

2. East Beach

It is the most popular beach in the area simply due to its location.

Most locals visit East Beach as there’s a lot of parking – both in a parking lot and along the road. Plus, it’s close to many hotels that line the beach. Furthermore, there’s a TON of beach space, so you won’t need to crowd others (unless it’s a holiday weekend). For the active folks, there are volleyball courts to play on.

PS: The famous McConnells Ice Cream is just up the street from Stearns Wharf. It’s fantastic and a must-have when visiting Santa Barbara beaches.

<p>It’s another one of my favorites, but this time because it’s super chill and relaxed. Furthermore, it’s also in a nice cove, so there’s not a lot of waves, which makes it great for families with little kids. It’s located right in front of the Miramar Hotel. So, if you’re looking for a luxury place to stay, this is it!</p><p>This is also one of the best beaches in Santa Barbara to run if you want to work out before cooling off in the water. </p>

1000 Steps Beach isn’t one that’s usually lounged on, but it’s highly worth it. I actually witnessed the most epic sunset here. But this one’s great for walking alongside the water and doesn’t have too many people on it.

I still have found it’s one of my favorite of the Santa Barbara Beaches.

<p>This is near One Thousand Steps Beach. But I’ll be honest, I’m not sure if I ever made it here. 18 Things to Do in Santa Barbara

By: Author Susan Moore

Posted on Last updated: November 7, 2023

One of the most beautiful cities in the United States is Santa Barbara, on the California coast. The city is popular with tourists and as a retirement location due to the year round comfortable climate. The area features wineries and enjoys excellent agricultural land, fresh fruit and vegetables are abundant.

Santa Barbara is only 95 miles from Los Angeles but it’s a relaxed vibe compared to LA.

While you’ll find a lot of tourists in both cities, Santa Barbara is less crowded and easy to get around on a bicycle or walking from downtown to the beach.

In this post I’m sharing 18 fun things to do in Santa Barbara , including day trips from Santa Barbara.

If you’re looking for a beautiful hotel with a great location close to the beach in Santa Barbara La Playa Inn is a great option –  read reviews and see photos now .

18 Fun Things to do in Santa Barbara California

1.   Shoreline Park

Shoreline Park is a beautiful oceanside park close to downtown Santa Barbara and next to Leadbetter Beach . The park features palm trees, a large grassy area, and paved walking pathways.

With picnic tables and BBQ pits this is a lovely place for a picnic. Kids can enjoy the playground, and everyone will enjoy beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean.

Dogs are allowed at Shoreline Park provided they are on leash at all times.

2.   Leadbetter Beach

In between Shoreline Park and the harbor, you will find Leadbetter Beach, a popular beach for locals and tourists to Santa Barbara.

Leadbetter Beach is popular for windsurfing, kayaking, and paddle boarding.

There are outdoor showers and restrooms, along with BBQ pits and picnic tables. There is a group picnic site available for advance reservations.

No dogs allowed on Leadbetter Beach.

3.   Stearns Wharf

If you walk down State Street from downtown, you will run into Stearns Wharf at the harbor. The pier was built in 1872 and is named after John P Stearns, who was a local lumberman.

Take photos at the dolphin fountain and buy souvenirs at the gift shops and enjoy fishing from the pier.

Eat at Santa Barbara Shellfish Company for excellent seafood. There is probably a long lineup, but you should wait rather than go to the other not so busy restaurants. It’s worth the wait.

5.   State Street

Stroll down State Street for the shopping, cafes, restaurants, unique boutiques, and beautiful architecture in the Spanish Colonial style.

The State Street Promenade is a 10 block pedestrian walkway in between Sola and Gutierrez Streets.

On Tuesdays shop the Farmers Market from 2:45 to 6:30 pm at the 600 and 700 blocks of State Street.

6.   Santa Barbara County Courthouse

I wouldn’t normally suggest you go visit a courthouse, but the Santa Barbara Courthouse is definitely worth a visit.

Completed in 1929, the Spanish Colonial Revival style building was designed by William Mooser III.

Take a self-guided tour of the courthouse and be sure to walk up the steps (or take the elevator) to the top of the courthouse watchtower for 360 degree views of Santa Barbara and bunches of red tile rooftops.

The architecture at the courthouse is beautiful, from hand-painted murals, tiles, and arches you will find lots of photo ops.

santa barbara trip

When it comes to finding the quintessential day or weekend trip from Los Angeles, you cannot go wrong with a Santa Barbara day trip.

Perched on the cusp of Southern California and the Central Coast region, this beach town has long been a haven for couples looking for a romantic city break or young people looking to have a great party in a beautiful setting.

While this bustling university town might seem sleepy on the surface, there is enough to do here to occupy any personality type — whether you are embarking on a day trip to Santa Barbara from Los Angeles, are including it as a stop on a PCH road trip , or are visiting for a relaxing weekend getaway.

Table of Contents

When to Visit Santa Barbara

One of the wonderful things that Santa Barbara has going for it is the fact that the weather is close to perfect year-round.

Therefore, there really isn’t a bad time to visit Santa Barbara, especially if you’re only interested in taking advantage of the world-class shopping or fantastic wine tasting opportunities this city has to offer.

Blessed with perennial mild temperatures and plenty of sunshine, the weather varies little between seasons. However, depending on the activities you’re interested in doing during your one day in Santa Barbara, then some seasons are better for you.

Summer is the most popular season to visit and while the majority of the university students have gone home for the season, the city comes alive with eager day-trippers and city breakers. Daily high temperatures will range from 72°F (22°C) in June to 77°F (25°C) in August with very little chance of rain.

Summer is the ideal season if you’re interested in taking advantage of the myriad watersports available in the area. Water temperatures are about the warmest they will be making it the ideal time for surfing, kayaking, or paddleboarding.

If you want to go on a Santa Barbara day trip when all of the students are in town, the tourist crowds have depleted somewhat, but the temperatures (both air and water!) are as warm as they will be all year, then you can’t go wrong with visiting in September to November. High temperatures average from 70-76°F (21-26°C) with very little chance of rain.

Santa Barbara promenade

However, we are talking about a lovely seaside area in Southern California so you really cannot go wrong with visiting Santa Barbara in winter or spring. If you’re not interested in many watersports (or don’t mind chilly water!), then this is arguably the best time to visit this beautiful city as long as you pack appropriately .

Temperatures aren’t as high in spring and winter as they are in summer or autumn, however, don’t expect to have to brave some frigid sub-zero climate either. Daily highs in spring and winter average about 65-70°F (18-21°C) with plenty of sunshine to make sure you won’t have to deal with a rainy day.

One Day in Santa Barbara Itinerary

While visitors could easily spend more than one day and not get bored (particularly if you make some stops along the drive from LA to Santa Barbara ), it is also a fantastic place to take a day trip or overnight stop on a Highway 1 road trip.

Though the city is somewhat easy to get around on foot, you will likely find it easier to have your own vehicle while you’re visiting Santa Barbara.

If you need to hire a car while in Santa Barbara, we recommend browsing Rentalcars.com to compare prices for car rentals.

Morning – Explore the Funk Zone & Get on the Water

If you arrive the night before or get an early start to get to Santa Barbara, there are a few great activities that you can occupy your morning with.

Take the edge off of your day and begin with at one of Santa Barbara’s many coffee shops. There are numerous hip and cool cafes in the downtown area known as the Funk Zone where you can get a killer espresso drink along with a regular cup of drip coffee.

After coffee, take the time to go from a leisurely stroll along Santa Barbara’s main beach. Start from the harbour and lazily stroll along the lovely palm tree-lined path, past the iconic Stearns Wharf (Santa Barbara’s pier) and enjoy the beautiful expanse of soft, white sand.

If you’re not keen to walk around the city, it can be a great idea to rent a bicycle. There are multiple bike-hire places scattered throughout the downtown and beach areas and the city itself is flat and very cycle-friendly.

Late morning is the perfect time to get started in an active sport. Whether that be a surf lesson, a kayak trip, renting a stand-up paddleboard or going for a hike, there are numerous opportunities to get active in the great outdoors!

The lovely Santa Barbara waterfront

Afternoon – Lunch, State Street & the Santa Barbara Mission

After you’ve worked up an appetite being active during your morning, it’s time to take it a little bit easy in your afternoon in Santa Barbara.

Take the time to enjoy some lunch at one of Santa Barbara’s world-renowned eateries. You can get food from virtually any cuisine in this Californian city, however, the Mexican food is really something special.

La Super Rica Taqueria  is an unassuming taco shop and an excellent choice for a quick lunch. They serve a range of tacos and other Mexican favourites and it is sure to satisfy.

After lunch, take the time to stroll down State Street in the Funk Zone area of downtown. This is the main drag in Santa Barbara and is filled with many interesting shops, bars, restaurants and cafes.

If shopping doesn’t particularly interest you and you would prefer to learn more about Santa Barbara’s history and culture during your day trip, then why not visit some of the city’s numerous historic sites.

The Santa Barbara Mission is located in the downtown area and easy to reach from State Street. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful missions in all of California and is open daily for self-guided tours.

Another attraction in the downtown area is the historic Santa Barbara County Courthouse. Still in operation today, this building is open for tours and is an excellent example of Spanish-Moorish architecture.

There are also several museums to visit to suit different interests including the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum.

State Street is the main drag in Santa Barbara

Evening – Santa Barbara’s Food & Wine Scene

Santa Barbara is surrounded by some of the best wine country in California and is filled with tasting rooms scattered throughout the city.

The Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trails consists of 28 wineries located in different neighbourhoods throughout the city — the highest concentration of which are located in the trendy Funk Zone.

An excellent way to spend an evening is hopping between wineries and trying all of the fantastic wines produced in the region.

Most of the tasting rooms are within easy walking distance from each other and it doesn’t matter where you start, however, we would recommend trying to hit the Deep Sea tasting room , which has an excellent location on Stearns Wharf, at sunset.

A glass of wine with a view in Santa Barbara

They have a beautiful rooftop terrace and a wonderful tasting flight making it a perfect place to start an evening.

Though there are close to 30 wineries to choose from in Santa Barbara and it is impossible to hit all of them during a day, another we would recommend visiting is the quirky Area 5.1 tasting room . This place has several blended wines on offer and basic tasting flightd with very generous pours.

If you want to hit as many wineries as possible but don’t want to get drunk, most wineries will allow you to share one tasting flight between two people. This will not only allow you to try more wines but will also save you money.

If you’re more interested in having a guide and learning about Santa Barbara’s great gastronomic scene along with sampling some local wines and spirits, then this guided Funk Zone food & photo tour is a great choice for you! It includes several stops at local eateries and tasting rooms and has food and drink included in the price.

Round off your evening in Santa Barbara again by enjoying some of the city’s gastronomic delights. Finney’s Crafthouse & Kitchen is perfect if you’re craving a great beer and a fantastic burger.

Alternatively, Stella Mare’s Bistro  is a great choice if you want something a little more high-end. It’s a French bistro that has a wide menu using the freshest fish and local meats.

Have More Time in Santa Barbara?

If you’re keen to spend a weekend in Santa Barbara County rather than just a day trip to the city, there are multiple ways you could occupy your time.

For instance, if you have more time and want to experience more of the thriving gastronomic scene in Santa Barbara, then it can be very worth going on a food tour to find the best spots.

If you’ve exhausted all of the wineries in the Urban Wine Trails during your first day in the city, you can spend one of your two days in Santa Barbara taking a day trip to all of the vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley.

You could either self-drive here or take an organised tour — like this full day tour . The latter might be a better option as then you won’t have to worry about drinking and getting back behind the wheel.

Alternatively, if you know which wineries you’d like to visit and don’t need a guide, this wine shuttle is an excellent option.

If wine isn’t specifically your thing, or you’ve spent days one and two drinking wine and are spending three days in Santa Barbara, then you might be happy to know that the city also has a hopping (pun intended!) craft beer scene.

If you’d rather set your sites on Santa Barbara’s fantastic food scene, then there are also a number of great food tours of the city that will suit your fancy. This downtown food tour includes all food and beverage tastings plus an additional tasting of local beer or wine all with a knowledgeable local guide.

If you want to get more active during your time in Santa Barbara, you can spend one day on the water and another in the mountains.

The glory of this beautiful city is that you can go surfing in the morning and hiking in the afternoon and still have time to go wine tasting in the evening, making it truly a paradise for sun seekers and outdoor lovers.

You can also use Santa Barbara as a base to go on day trips to nearby towns such as the Danish-inspired town of Solvang or to explore Channel Islands National Park.

Where to Stay in Santa Barbara

The Presidio Hotel – This boutique hotel in downtown Santa Barbara is the perfect place to rest your head for a weekend away. They have a range of clean and comfortable rooms available, a friendly staff, and an excellent location to ensure you have the best stay possible.

Cheshire Cat Inn   — This quaint bed and breakfast in a great location is the perfect place to stay for a romantic weekend away. They have a wonderful staff, a range of cosy and clean rooms available, and a fantastic breakfast is included in the room rate.

Private Rental — If you want to have the privacy of your own apartment, then a private rental is an excellent option for you. There are numerous properties available in Santa Barbara that can suit any taste or budget such as this modern condo in the centre of the city .

The sunset from Stearns Wharf

Visiting Santa Barbara as a day trip from Los Angeles or as part of a California road trip is one of the best decisions you could make. Though there is certainly enough to keep you occupied and give you a taste of the city in one day, you could easily spend a few days in this coastal town and not get bored.

Bournemouth have confirmed they will spend pre-season in the United States this summer.

The Premier League club have announced they will head to Los Angeles, California with the playing squad, including USMNT captain Tyler Adams , to be based at the training facilities of MLS team LA Galaxy.

They also toured the U.S. back in 2016.

The two-week trip will see the club play their first two friendlies of pre-season and will also take in a visit to Santa Barbara.

Wrexham AFC co-chairmen Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney announced that their side will face Bournemouth at Harder Stadium in Santa Barbara, on July 20.

Bournemouth Chief executive, Neill Blake, said: “I’m delighted that we’re able to confirm this exciting news, and that we will be providing the best possible preparation for the playing squad to continue their great work of this season.

“We’ve secured an incredible facility for Andoni (Iraola) and his staff to operate in, for the start of what will be an historic season for AFC Bournemouth as we prepare to move into a state-of-the-art training ground of our own.”

President of business, Jim Frevola, added: “It’s great that we’re able to take the team back to the US for the first time in nearly ten years. I’m so excited to head out there to see and grow our fanbase in the area, and to continue to develop the club off the field.

“We were thrilled by the recent Premier League event in Nashville, and now we can’t wait to meet with more Cherries fans out on the west coast.”

The club also confirmed they will host two friendlies at Vitality Stadium ahead of the first round of the 2024-25 Premier League season on the weekend of August 17.

Choose between stability and ‘downward spiral’ China’s foreign minister tells Blinken during Beijing trip

santa barbara trip

By Jennifer Hansler and Simone McCarthy, CNN

Beijing (CNN) — China and the US face a choice between stability and a “downward spiral,” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told counterpart Antony Blinken on Friday in Beijing, as the American diplomat kicked off a day of meetings with top Chinese officials.

Blinken’s trip to China – his second in the space of a year – comes as the two global powers seek to expand communication and stabilize rocky ties , while also navigating a host of thorny issues from China’s support for Russia to its aggression in the South China Sea and toward Taiwan.

“Should China and the United States keep to the right direction of moving forward with stability or return to a downward spiral? This is a major question before our two countries, and tests our sincerity and ability,” Wang told Blinken during a meeting at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, after saying US-China ties were “beginning to stabilize.”

“Should our two sides lead international cooperation against global issues and achieve win-win for all? Or engage in rivalry and confrontation – or even slide into conflict, which would be a lose-lose for all?” he said, speaking through an interpreter.

Wang’s comments come as Chinese officials bristle at actions Washington has taken in the name of national security, which Beijing sees as meant to suppress its development. Those have included US controls on the export to China of high-tech goods that could have military uses, as well as curbs on US investment in certain high-tech sectors in China.

On Wednesday, US President Joe Biden signed a bill that could lead to a nationwide ban on the social media platform TikTok if the company’s Chinese parent ByteDance doesn’t sell it – legislation Beijing has previously decried.

In his comments to Wang, Blinken pointed to a “shared responsibility” between the two countries to “make sure that we’re as clear as possible about the areas where we have differences, at the very least, to avoid misunderstandings, to avoid miscalculations.”

“I hope we can make some progress on the issues that our presidents agreed we should cooperate on, but also clarify our differences, our intents, and make very clear to each other where we stand,” Blinken said.

The trip is the latest in a string of high-level engagements that included a summit meeting between President Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in California in November, following a period of immense tension.

Officials from both nations suggested ahead of the trip that the visit would be focused on managing the relationship and communicating concerns.

The two sides are also expected to discuss areas of contention.

Blinken is expected to raise the issue of China’s industrial and economic support for Russia, which the White House says has allowed Moscow to continue its war against Ukraine, and press China to use its relationship with Iran to push it to be less provocative in the Middle East.

In a briefing with reporters earlier this week ahead of the meeting, a Chinese Foreign Ministry official said Beijing has been “playing a constructive role as a responsible major country” on issues related to the Middle East, Ukraine, the Korean Peninsula and “expects the US side to do the same.”

In addition to concern about US technology curbs, Wang will likely continue to stress China’s so-called “red lines” in the relationship, the foremost of which being how the US maintains its unofficial relationship with Taiwan.

China’s ruling Communist Party claims Taiwan as part of its territory, despite having never controlled it, and has ramped up its military intimidation of the democratic island in recent years.

“We always call for respecting each other’s core interests and urge the United States not to interfere in China’s internal affairs, not to hold China’s development back, not to step on China’s red lines on China’s sovereignty, security and development interests,” Wang told Blinken ahead of the meeting.
