Reviewed: Carnival Cruise Wi-Fi Service (Speed, Reliability, Cost, and More)

Not that long ago, Internet on a cruise was largely a luxury. While someone might buy access to be able to work remotely from the ship or buy a few minutes to check email, broad access by many people on the ship wasn’t common.

Internet wi-fi-access on a Carnival cruise

What a difference a few years can make. Now, having wi-fi access is nearly a necessity. Not only does it give you a chance to check in back home and keep tabs on your email or the office while you’re away, but it also allows you to post those nice pictures of yourself having fun onto social media, watch movies in the cabin, listen to music, and even check-in for flights when heading home after the trip.

It’s no exaggeration that Internet access has gone from a luxury to a must-have.

The good news is that cruise lines — including Carnival — offer wi-fi access across their fleets. Whether you want to hook up to the Internet with your laptop or post to Facebook from your phone, you can get service anywhere on the ship on any device.

That said, wi-fi access is not free, nor is it as quick as you are used to back on land. It is still a challenge to get access while hundreds of miles in the middle of the water. So what can you expect? We recently put Carnival’s Internet access through the paces to give you all the details on what we experienced with the service.

In This Article...

What Wi-Fi Packages Are Available on Carnival?

Like other cruise lines, Carnival offers different tiers of service, all at different price points. Each tier offers different access, from just being able to login to social media, all the way to full web access at faster speeds. Here’s a run-down of what’s offered:

Social Plan: Gives access to social media sites like Twitter and Facebook, WhatsApp, and Snapchat, along with airline websites. However, it doesn’t include most websites (including email), streaming, or wi-fi calling, FaceTime or iMessage.

Value Plan: Gives email access, what’s included in the social plan, as well as broad access to the rest of the web — all at faster speeds than the Social plan. However, Carnival says it still doesn’t support video/music streaming, FaceTime, or wi-fi calling.

Premium Plan: Carnival’s highest tier of service, it offers everything in the other two tiers, with faster speeds (Carnival says up to three times faster than the value plan). It also allows Netflix, giving you the ability to stream shows. However, the cruise line says it doesn’t support video or music streaming with other services like Hulu. (See below for more details — including our experience — on streaming).

How Much Does Wi-Fi Access Cost on Carnival?

What you pay for access will depend on when you purchase and how long you want access. Typically, Internet access is sold for the length of the entire cruise based on a per-day cost. There is a discount if you buy service before the cruise compared to the onboard price .

The prices below are what’s seen on Carnival’s website as of now:

How Do You Access the Internet Once on the Ship?

The sign-in process is fairly straightforward, but there were some hiccups here and there. Sometimes logging in took a few tries to gain access.

  • Open up your wi-fi connection settings and connect to the ship’s service. In our case, it was named “Carnival Celebration Wi-Fi” or something similar.
  • Open up a browser and go to “CarnivalWiFi.com”
  • Enter your folio number and birthdate, and click “Log In”
  • Click “Confirm” on the next screen to enable access.

At this point you should be connected and can then surf the web as normal.

How Fast Is Carnival’s Wi-Fi Service?

For our cruises, we’ve tested the fastest Premium plan of service. Doing multiple speed tests across cruises, it seems to show speeds between 6-12 Mbps. On this specific test, it returned a ping of 680 ms, a download speed of 9.09 Mbps, and an upload speed of 2.64 Mbps:

Wi-fi speed on Carnival cruise

Those numbers likely mean little to most people, but for a cruise ship, they are pretty good. (Keep in mind, however, that speed will vary. We’ve been on other ships with slower speeds or in locations where speeds are slower.)

In layman’s terms, surfing the web did seem sluggish. There were times when the connection seemed faster than others, but you wouldn’t confuse the speed with broadband you have at home or the office. Sites would load, but took their time.

For instance, visiting YouTube took about 10 seconds before video thumbnails started to load. A visit to CNN.com brought up the text headlines relatively quickly, but images were delayed.

If you had to use the connection every day to surf, it would be slow by modern standards. It definitely took some time to load images onto posts for Cruzely.com when we live-blogged the cruise. Using the wi-fi here and there to check the news or email, however, was just fine.

Do I Have to Buy Access For Every Device? Can I Share Access?

It’s likely you’re traveling with other people that want access to the Internet. In that case you have two options. First, you can buy more than one package, giving access to multiple devices at once. Or, you can simply share access on different devices.

Carnival allows you to login to the wi-fi from separate devices, but you can only use one device at a time. So one person could connect with the wi-fi on a laptop and when finished, another person could login to have access on their phone. If you don’t need access every moment of the day, it’s an easy way to save some money by sharing.

To transfer access between devices, you simply follow the login procedures as normal. It will notify you that the account is already in use and ask if you want to switch devices. Simply confirm the switch and you’re good to go on the second device.

Can I Stream Movies/TV on Carnival’s Wi-Fi?

Streaming while on a cruise

Whether you can stream on your cruise may be hard to say. Here’s the issue: Carnival says that its fastest Premium plan supports Netflix, but not other video/music streaming services.

Our experience, however, is that you can actually stream at least some of those services that are supposedly no supported.

During one cruise aboard Carnival Vista, for instance, we were able to access and watch YouTube videos. We also streamed Amazon Prime videos multiple times with no issues. The picture was nice, and there was minimal buffering. When trying to stream Showtime, however, we encountered an error and weren’t able to watch.

Bottom line is that yes, you can stream in at least some cases. The better option, however, is to go ahead and download any shows you want to watch ahead of time. That way you don’t have to worry about wi-fi service at all. Even if you are able to stream, there might be points where a slow connection makes the show appear choppy or pixelated. Downloading before boarding makes this a non-issue.

Can I Make FaceTime Calls on the Wi-Fi?

Yes. On our trip we tested FaceTime calls from an iPhone with the Premium plan. There were no issues connecting. The call quality itself was so-so. We were able to talk, but there were some times where the image was blurry or froze for a few seconds. Audio had no issues.

Bottom line: FaceTime was able to be used, even though Carnival says on its website that it’s not supported.

Can I Text Message Over Carnival’s Wi-Fi?

For most of us, we message a lot more than we actually make calls on our phone. In this case, during our tests we noticed that texting iPhone to iPhone seemed to work with no problems. We were able to send and receive messages when connected to wi-fi, including messages with pictures.

However, when messaging to an Android phone, our messages had trouble going through. In the end, we ended up just emailing the person we were trying to text as we couldn’t send the text. (This might also have been due to settings on our phone, which is possible.)

In that case, messaging apps like WhatsApp might be a better option. We didn’t test any messaging apps on our cruise, but they are specifically mentioned by Carnival as being supported on its wi-fi service.

Do I Have to Buy Wi-Fi Access to Use Carnival’s HUB App?

If you’re about to sail, you’ve likely seen mention of downloading the HUB app to use on the ship. This app is extremely useful on the cruise, and you can use it to access everything from dinner menus to ship maps to tracking your onboard spending account.

The good news if that you don’t have to purchase wi-fi access to use the app. All the features can be used without buying an Internet plan. You are able to connect and get data from the app at no cost.

Can I Use a VPN?

Some people need to use a virtual private network (VPN) when working or simply use one for more privacy online. While we didn’t specifically test out a VPN while sailing, Carnival says they do not support VPNs on their ships.

According to the FAQ on their website: “VPN connections are not supported. Discuss your VPN limitations with your company’s IT department if you are planning to work while sailing. We are not able to change your settings on board.”

Can I Work or Do School Work With the Wi-Fi?

Of course, one major reason to sign up for Internet is to be able to work from the ship. These days, many people opt to take a “working cruise” and enjoy themselves while also being able to complete work back home. So is that possible on a Carnival cruise?

In our opinion, it depends on the type of work or school work you’re doing. Have something where you need to be live on Zoom with perfect clarity and reception? That might be tough to manage. Need to make an informal video call? That should be fine. Simply need Internet access to access documents, submit an assignment, or send some emails? That’s no issue at all.

In other words, access to work that requires a reliably fast and solid connection could have issues (you are at sea, after all). However, less-intensive tasks should be perfectly feasible.

Is Carnival’s Wi-Fi Worth It?

For a 7-day cruise, you’ll pay about $150 for the Premium plan — or nearly $22 a day. That’s a sharp price to pay for online access. So is it worth it?

In our eyes, it depends on what you need access for. If you simply want to stay connected, check email occasionally and text some friends, then paying that much seems too high to us (that’s where the cheaper Social and Value plans are nice). However, if you have work obligations or things going on back home that you simply can’t miss, then by all means, hop online.

One thing to note is that many ports of calls offer wi-fi service in some shape or form . There may be restaurants that offer wi-fi to customers or ports of call that offer access for a cheaper fee than what’s on the ship. You can also access the Internet with a day-pass so you don’t have to pay for access the entire week.

This way, you can still stay in touch back home without spending as much money.

Would the premium service allow you to play games on your phone?

Yes, that should be no issue.

does wireless travel router work on carnival ?

i was on rcl’s symphony and worked just fine. all my fam were able to connect

Never tried.

My work laptop doesn’t connect directly to cruise wifi but if I don’t through a router or create my own wifi hotspot through phone then it works. Google pixel phones can turn cruise and airplane wifi into hotspot similar to travel wifi. I have shared plane wifi with family member by turning hotspot on and same can be done on cruises.

If you want to share internet with other devices you can either hotspot your phone or bring a travel router

I’ve personally tried the hotspot and it didn’t work.

It works with certain phone. My Google pixel can turn wifi into hotspot but my Motorola can’t. I don’t know about iphone however.r

This response is solely related to internet on Carnival cruise ships…

I suspect Tanner has taken one Carnival cruise and thinks his experience is the norm for all Carnival ships. The article is missing a fleetwide perspective. Some of the information is useful, but some of it is not so good.

Yes, Carnival has invested in improving its internet experience on its newer ships, however the older ships still have the worst in the industry bandwidth. The Carnival Vista is one of their newer ships, so it will have faster internet. I have had decent internet on the Carnival Vista, Horizon, and Mardi Gras. I expect the same on the Celebration when I sail in 2023. These are all newer ships. My experience on 14 other Carnival ships was less than enjoyable. Granted some of my earlier cruises were before smartphones were a thing. And as mentioned, they are making improvements. Those improvements are obviously a work in progress.

That said, I must concur with Jon about the Carnival Paradise. I have been on that ship 4 times in 2022, and internet is dismal. Don’t expect to be able to stream video. Lily didn’t mention which ship she was on, but I suspect it was one of the smaller and older ships.

The most useful advice I can share is about when to purchase an internet plan for an upcoming Carnival cruise. If it is a newer ship, I suggest buying in advance to save 10% or 20% (depending on the current offer). If it is a older ship, wait until you are on the boat. Yes, you will pay full price. If the internet is usable, you will soon forget about the higher cost. However, if internet is unusable, head to the guest services midway through the cruise (or whenever you see short lines). Make your complaint, and it is very likely they will refund a portion of your internet plan, in my experience typically 50%. This is only an option if purchase the plan while on the ship. If you prepaid for the plan, you will need to complain to customer service when back on land. Getting any type of refund from in this case is hit or miss, usually miss.

One final piece of advice on internet. Based on where you are at on the boat can affect the signal you have. The closer you are to a wifi access point, the better the signal. On the smaller boats, the closer you are to the middle of the ship, the better signal strength. Larger boats have more wifi access points. Don’t confused signal strength with bandwidth. I try to book aft view balcony rooms, signal strength is not very good there.

The nice thing about cruise ships is there are lots of places to sit and do your surfing. That is, if there is sufficient bandwidth to do so. Just bring a headset so you don’t annoy others.

“I suspect Tanner has taken one Carnival cruise and thinks his experience is the norm for all Carnival ships.”

Incorrect. In the past few months, I’ve sailed both the oldest (Ecstasy before it was retired) and newest (Celebration) Carnival ships. Celebration did have faster internet ~10-12 Mbps, but Ecstasy was still a solid 5-7 Mbps during my test. Vista, covered in the article was ~9 Mbps. So yes, there seems to be a correlation between faster service on newer ships, but I still found the service on the oldest ship to be solid.

My experience on a recent Falll 2022 Western Caribbean cruise on the Carnival Paradise was vastly different than yours. For most of the cruise, the Internet was not available. Wifi and their internal Mobile App worked and I could check in to restaurants etc; just couldn’t access the Internet. One time while in Port at Roatan I experienced 10MBS Down and 2MB Up for a few hours then Internet disappeared again from their WiFi. A few times while cruising when Internet access did work, I was experiencing 178KBPS Down!! Small Pic uploads to facebook either took 20 minutes or longer or would often time-out. I had the so-called “Premium Plan”. I called Guest services 4 times and hung up after 25 minute wait/hold times. I transferred my WiFi to another device thinking there could have been an issue with one of my devices but I experienced the same sad performance. I used the Post-Cruise Survey to relay my sad WiFi experience. I will never again purchase their expensive WiFi again.

I just got off a Carnival cruise, had “premium” internet – and on the first night, they changed their network configuration and I was suddenly unable to connect to my work. I begged them for five days to please fix their network – it was definitely their network, as I got the same error from three different clients on two machines we had with us – and the error would have been easy for them to correct – but they refused to even discuss it. I was told by guest services “I’ll check into it” but nothing happened. All they would have had to do is look at their server logs and they’d see what they had done. I was unable to do my work for the entire week. I have been cruising Carnival for years and never had this issue (well, once but they fixed it in 3 hours), but this was a nightmare. All they had to do was look at their server logs, and most likely update their digital certificate/time clock, but instead they kept asking me “which URL is not working, we will see if we can connect”. I told them half a dozen times its not a URL, its a *program*. I hope this turns out to be an isolated incident – if it happens again, my cruising days are over.

I feel your pain as I experienced similar sad performance on the Carnival Paradise but it won’t end my cruise days, it will just end my purchase of any of their WiFi plan packages.

With a 680millisecond ping time for the “premium” service, that means there’s such a huge latency (delay/lag), that anyone you’re with on a Teams or Zoom call will already be on the next sentence or paragraph before the video catches up with you. Disgraceful, Carnival to charge so much money for such subpar performance.

Do you have to have the premium to access YouTube? Or will one of the other plans work?

We’d suggest the highest level plan to offer the best experience in streaming anything.

Good idea. The social plan doesnt even allow email access.. 🙁

Carnival Cruise WiFi: Ultimate Guide To Carnival WiFi Plans

Imagine Cruising without the internet. No media uploading and no calling. Sounds weird, right? It’s totally abnormal for me as I strongly believe that “Life without the internet is like paralysis.”

But don’t worry. Carnival Cruises offers onboard Internet packages of different prices and quality. Depending on your preferences, these include social media, value, and premium packages.

But hold on! These packages are expensive and unsuitable for streaming videos or other high-bandwidth activities. So, before purchasing, knowing what you’re getting and what you need is important.

So hang on, my fellow cruisers. I’ve covered all your questions regarding Carnival Cruise WiFi in this article.

Also, at the end, I’ve shared my tips and tricks related to Carnival WiFi that will offer convenience and help you save on your budget.

So, let’s get started.

Table of Contents

How Much Do Carnival Wifi Packages Cost?

Carnival offers different WiFi packages based on your needs and preferences. Each package has its charges and speeds.

The packages range from $12.75 per day to $30 per day. Prices may vary depending on the type of cruise and the duration of the cruise.

But you can also opt for the full vacation WiFi package, which costs less. I highly recommend this option as I’ve personally used it.

Amazingly, there’s also a bonus from Carnival: if you buy any package before boarding, you’ll get a 15% discount as a gift. Remember, you must purchase before getting on board to avail of this offer.

What Are The Available Carnival Wifi Packages?

Carnival WiFi offers three different internet packages depending on your needs. These are social, value, and premium.

1- The Social Plan

social plan

If you’re someone like me and love constantly uploading on social media, there’s a specific plan just for your needs: the “social” plan.

With this option, you’ll have access to various social media platforms, enabling you to stay connected with friends and share your cruise experiences.

Keep in mind that you can’t make video calls on this plan. I faced a major misunderstanding, but now I’m sharing this insight with you so that you can stay informed.

The popular social package also allows access to popular airline sites, enabling you to check in for your flight towards the end of your cruise.

The price of this social plan is $15 per day. But if you purchase it before boarding, it will cost you $12.75 per day.

The entire cruise costs $89.25 (pre-purchase). Most importantly, buying a 24-hour pass for the Social Wi-fi plan is impossible.

  • Allow usage for Snapchat, FaceBook Messenger, WhatsApp, and other platforms

2- The Value Plan

The Value Plan is for people who enjoy browsing their favorite websites while accessing social media during the cruise.

So, if you’re someone needing to check Linkedin, emails, or handle other important stuff on websites, the Value Plan is your go-to. Its cost after boarding is $20, but if purchased beforehand, it’s only $17. For a 7-day cruise, it totals $119.

It’s also available as a 24-hour pass, priced at $22 per day. Unfortunately, video or music streaming is not supported by this plan.

  • Decent Speed
  • Allow surfing
  • Don’t allow video calling and streaming

3- The Premium Plan

The Premium Plan

The Premium Plan is the top tier offering from Carnival Cruise, providing faster and broader service compared to the Social and Value packages.

Its major advantage lies in access to video and music streaming. It also supports video calling on platforms like Skype and Zoom, wherever coverage allows.

This package is available before boarding for $18.70 per person per day. However, if you purchase it after boarding, the price increases to $22 daily. For a seven-day trip, the total cost would amount to $130.90

For the 24-hour pass, the daily costs rise to $30. This could save you money if you only need access on specific days.

  • Support Skype, Zoom, etc, for video calling
  • Allow streaming

Are There Different Speed Options With Carnival WiFi Packages?

Yes. Each Carnival Cruise WiFi package offers different speeds. The Premium plan stands out as the fastest service, providing speeds up to three times faster than the Social and Value plans.

I opted for the Premium plan during my cruise, and its speed was truly impressive. I experienced no connection problems while video and music streaming or conducting video calls. It delivered an excellent performance overall.

While the Value Plan does offer decent speed, it doesn’t come closer to the Premium plan. Also, the Value Plan doesn’t support video calls and streaming due to its lower bandwidth.

How Fast Is The Internet On Carnival Cruise?

The internet speed on Carnival Cruise ships can vary. It depends on where the ship is, how many people are using it, and the internet plan you bought.

You might not get super-fast speeds like at home, but it works okay for basic things like social media or emails.

Newer ships have better Internet, up to 1-2 mbps on older ones and 8-10 mbps on newer ones, especially those with Starlink.

The problem isn’t just speed; it’s also about “latency.” This is around 40-60 milliseconds at home, but on regular ship Wi-Fi, it’s slower at about 700 milliseconds. This causes buffering and frustration.

On Starlink-equipped ships, I tested and found faster speeds of around 35 milliseconds. This made watching Netflix and Amazon Prime smooth without any issues.

If your room is on a lower deck, like Cove Balconies , you might have a slower internet speed compared to upper decks because of better satellite communication. So, consider that when choosing your cabin if you and yours care about internet speed.

Can You Call Home?

If you have the Premium Plan, you can make calls to your love ones and home using apps like FaceTime audio, Skype, or WhatsApp.

If your phone can make calls over WiFi, you can use that feature with the Premium Plan. I use T-Mobile, and I put my phone on airplane mode when I get on the ship.

Then, I turn on the T-Mobile WiFi so my phone works like a normal phone using the ship’s Internet. WiFi calling doesn’t use your cell data, just the Internet. AT&T also has WiFi calling.

Can I Purchase Carnival WiFi Packages Before the Cruise?

wifi speed

Yes. Purchasing a Carnival WiFi package before the cruise is the best time, as you get a 15% discount on every plan.

I also purchased the Premium Plan before boarding, which costs me $18.70 per day instead of $22.

Is There a Carnival WiFi Device Limit?

Carnival Cruise WiFi typically has a restriction on the number of devices connected to a single WiFi package at a time. However, this limit depends on the specific package purchased.

Some packages are to be connected at a time, while others could allow multi-device to be connected concurrently.

The package I purchased only provides Internet to a single device at a time. If someone else was using my package, I could disconnect their access when I logged in. With this feature, I could control the device linked to my WiFi package.

Can You Use a VPN On Carnival Cruise WiFi?

I know many people are concerned about VPN usage, especially on using public Wi-Fi. So that’s something really important to know on cruise ships. But Carnival Cruise line does say that they are safe and secure.

However, most cruise ships do not allow you to use a VPN on cruise ship WiFi.

However, Norwegian Cruise Line allows VPN usage on their WiFi. However, I’m unsure whether it works for all their plans or the only premium one.

Are There Any Free Wifi Access Points Onboard A Carnival Cruise?

Carnival Cruise Line typically offers internet access through their WiFi packages, but there are several tricks you can use to access free WiFi points.

During my cruise, a lot of people were searching for a free WiFi spot, and some of my fellows were asking me to turn on my WiFi hotspot.

From all these experiences, I’ve compiled a list of ways to access free WiFi without purchasing it.

  • Ask your fellow cruiser to share device WiFi (If he has purchased the package)
  • Search for the local restaurant with a free WiFi spot
  • Take help from Crew members
  • Walk up to the open decks to pick up a signal from the local area or port
  • Look for the Bars with Free WiFi in Port

The Alternative Of Carnival Cruise Line Wi-Fi: Carnival Hub App

Back in 2015, Carnival Cruise Line introduced the HUB app. At first, it lets guests do simple stuff like reading a digital Fun Times, checking account balances, and seeing the weather at ports.

Spend $5 for the whole cruise on the Carnival Hub app for chatting with onboard friends and family.

Now, the app does a lot more:

  • Complete cruise check-in
  • Begin the mandatory muster drill
  • Order food for delivery to most spots on the ship
  • Read restaurant menus and make dining reservations
  • View ship maps
  • Chat with cruise companions
  • Purchase things such as shore excursions, drink packages, and wifi packages

You can grab the app from the Google Play Store or iTunes. Getting it before you board to dodge hefty fees from your cell phone provider is a good idea.

You don’t have to buy the Internet to use the app.

How Do You Avoid Mobile Phone Charges At Sea?

The simplest way is to put your phone in “airplane mode.” Then, go to your device settings and turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. This way, your smartphone can still connect with your other devices.

It’s a good idea to tell your friends and family that you’re doing this. Just in case they need to reach you while you’re away.

How To Join Carnival Wi-Fi Packages?

Getting Wi-Fi on the ship is easy.

Just check your laptop or personal device’s Wi-Fi settings. You’ll see a list of available networks. Look for “Carnival Vista Wi-Fi” or “Carnival Guest Wi-Fi.”

Choose that network. Once connected, a window will pop up asking for your folio number and date of birth. Enter those, then click login.

After that, click confirm, and you’re online. If you’re using a laptop and don’t see the prompts, open your browser and go to carnivalwifi.com. If you have trouble connecting, Guest Services can help you out.

Does Carnival Use Starlink, And Why Should I Care?

Carnival is rolling out Starlink Internet across its ships, offering a better onboard Internet experience.

Starlink, Elon Musk’s project, provides faster Internet using satellite technology at lower costs and higher speeds.

Many cruise lines, including Carnival, upgrade their onboard Internet using Starlink. It theoretically offers faster speeds than older cruise ship Internet. However, cruise IT departments manage speeds to ensure stability when many passengers are online.

On my recent cruise, the onboard Internet was upgraded to Starlink. For the first time, I stopped complaining about slow download speeds. It wasn’t lightning-fast, but it was more stable and less frustrating. Upload speed had also improved.

If you’ve had issues with cruise Wi-Fi before, check if your ship has switched to Starlink before purchasing Wi-Fi.

Which Carnival Ships Have Starlink?

  • Carnival Celebration
  • Carnival Elation
  • Carnival Magic
  • Carnival Panorama
  • Carnival Pride
  • Carnival Sunrise
  • Carnival Sunshine
  • Carnival Valor
  • Carnival Venezia
  • Carnival Vista
  • Carnival Jubilee (future ship to be equipped with Starlink)

Can I Upgrade Or Change My Carnival Wi-fi Plan During The Cruise?

You can upgrade or change your Carnival WiFi package during the cruise. Visit the Guest Services desk onboard the ship, and they’ll assist you in switching to a different WiFi package if needed.

Tips For Maximizing The Usage Of Carnival Internet Plan

Here are my tips for making the most of your Carnival WiFi package:

  • Purchase the WiFi Package before boarding
  • Choose package wisely
  • Manage devices
  • Optimize usage
  • Access WiFi during less crowded hours
  • Look for ships with improved internet networks like Starlink

Expert Tips And Hints When Using Carnival Cruise WiFi

Here are some simple tips for using Carnival Cruise WiFi:

  • Plan for Savings: Buy your WiFi plan before your cruise to save around 15% and ensure full coverage.
  • Save Money on Port Days: Consider getting WiFi only on sea days. Use free WiFi in ports to save money.
  • Share Connection Wisely: Share WiFi with friends but agree on times to avoid disconnecting each other.
  • Affordable Chat Service: Spend $5 for the whole cruise on the Carnival Hub app to chat with onboard friends and family.
  • Device Usage Limit: One device at a time on the plan, but multiple devices can use it. You might have to kick someone off if they’re already using it.
  • Streaming Services Use: Some say no, but I used Amazon Music without issues. Download Netflix shows before the cruise for smoother watching.
  • Easy Chat Purchase: Pay $5 onboard for the chat feature, billed directly to your Sail & Sign account.
  • Guest Services Help: If internet issues arise, go to Guest Services. They might refund charges if your device isn’t connecting.

Is Carnival WiFi Worth It?

Simply put, no. But the real answer depends on you! Carnival WiFi is pricier than what we’re used to at home. Whether it’s worth it depends on your needs.

How Fast is the Internet on Carnival Cruise Ships?

Woman on a cruise ship using her phone to take a photo of the sunset

In 2023, Carnival Cruise Line added Starlink internet service across their fleet. Starlink is the internet service offered by SpaceX. The service uses low-earth orbit satellites instead of the previous mid-earth and geosynchronous ones. The service promises lower latency and faster internet speeds.

We put the Carnival Cruise Line’s premium WiFi plan to the test.

During a cruise on Carnival’s Mardi Gras cruise ship , I ran multiple speed tests throughout the 7-night sailing while using the Premium WiFi Plan. I average 83.1Mbps download speeds and 3.28Mbps upload speeds .

In other words, Carnival’s internet is very fast.

Sending emails, checking the news, and basic web browsing is a breeze. I could watch YouTube videos and stream movies on Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney Plus without issues.

How to Access Carnival Cruise Internet Plans

Accessing the internet aboard the Carnival cruise ship is a smooth process. Here’s how you can get online:

  • Start by selecting the WiFi network of the ship on your device. It’s usually named after the ship, like “Carnival Celebration WiFi.”
  • Launch any web browser and navigate to “CarnivalWiFi.com.”
  • You’ll need to enter your folio number and birthdate for verification. Once entered, click on the “Log In” button.
  • A confirmation screen will appear. Click “Confirm” to proceed.

Once these steps are completed, you should be successfully connected to the internet. Enjoy browsing just as you would on a regular land-based connection.

Do I Have to Buy the Internet Package for Every Device? Can I Share My Internet Plan?

Purchasing Carnival’s internet access for the whole family can become costly. However, a cost-effective workaround allows multiple devices to share a single internet plan.

Carnival Cruise Line offers the flexibility of using one internet package across several devices , though only one device can be connected at a time.

Imagine one person using the WiFi on their smartphone. Once done, another person can utilize the same internet access on their laptop. This sharing strategy efficiently reduces expenses. But it only works if you don’t require a constant WiFi connection during your cruise.

The switching process is straightforward. Connect the new device to the ship’s WiFi network. You’ll receive a prompt asking if you want to switch devices . Selecting “confirm,” the new device will be connected to the WiFi.

It’s important to remember that confirming this switch will automatically disconnect the previous device from the internet. This feature can be particularly useful for parents wanting to limit their children’s screen time, helping everyone enjoy the vacation experience more fully.

Is Carnival’s WiFi Worth It?

Carnival’s WiFi is worth it if you need to stay connected on your cruise vacation.

Choose the Social package or Value plan if you want to browse social media and post the occasional vacation photo.

You can save money using free WiFi at the ports of call. But public WiFi is less secure than the cruise ship’s internet service.

The most significant benefit of Carnival Cruise’s internet plans is sharing internet access with your travel buddies. On our last trip, we saved more than $145 by sharing the Carnival WiFi packages between two people.

The internet plan was well worth the price because we could all use and share internet access.

Here are some streamlined tips for using the Internet on a Carnival cruise:

  • Pre-Purchase WiFi Plan for Savings : Buy your WiFi plan before your cruise to enjoy a 15% discount. Prices are higher once you’re on the ship.
  • Shared Access on Multiple Devices : The plan allows internet access on multiple devices, but only one device can be connected at a time. It’s a great way to save money on your Carnival cruise.
  • Switch Users Without Disrupting Others : If you try to log in while the plan is in use, you’ll get a prompt asking if you want to disconnect the current user. This feature ensures you don’t interrupt someone else’s session, like a video call. It’s also useful if you want to manage your kids’ internet usage.
  • Download Entertainment Beforehand : For a better viewing experience, download movies and TV shows before your cruise. Streaming services like Netflix may have slow loading times and reduced video quality on the ship.
  • Assistance with Internet Issues : If you encounter any difficulties with your internet connection, guest services are available to assist in connecting your device.
  • Avoid Roaming Charges : Keep your phone on airplane mode while using WiFi to prevent roaming charges on your cruise vacation .

These tips will help you enjoy a seamless and cost-effective internet experience during your Carnival cruise.

What Is Carnival Cruise WiFi and How It Works?

So, you know how staying connected is pretty essential these days, right? Well, Carnival Cruise gets that and offers WiFi onboard. It’s like having your own little hotspot in the middle of the ocean! They’ve got various plans to fit what you need, whether you’re just itching to update your socials or need full-on streaming capabilities.

carnival cruise wifi speed

Getting hooked up is super easy. You just grab your device, find the ship’s WiFi network, and hop onto a web portal to choose your plan. Voila! You’re set to scroll, stream, or even video chat from the comfort of your cabin or while lounging by the pool. Pretty cool, huh?

Carnival Cruise WiFi isn’t just for checking your emails; it’s versatile enough for all sorts of online activities. For instance, if you’re someone who needs to stay in the loop for work, you can easily handle emails or even attend virtual meetings right from the ship. But it’s not all work and no play. Social media enthusiasts can effortlessly update their feeds with fun vacation pictures and real-time experiences, keeping friends and family in the loop. Want to stay entertained? You can stream your favorite shows or movies without a hitch. If you’re more of a gamer, the high-speed option can even support that. So, whether you’re working or relaxing, Carnival Cruise WiFi has got you covered for pretty much anything you’d want to do online.

Speaking of coverage, it’s important to note that while Carnival Cruise WiFi offers excellent connectivity, it’s not an all-inclusive service , so be sure to check the available packages to meet your specific online needs.

WiFi Packages and Costs in a Carnival Cruise

Get ready to set sail on a digital adventure with Carnival Cruise’s top-notch WiFi packages. From affordable to premium options, stay connected throughout your journey.

A lady using a wifi on a laptop

Types of Internet Plans Available and Cost

So you’re sold on the idea of staying connected while you sail, but what are your options? Carnival Cruise offers a range of Wi-Fi packages to cater to various needs, from the social media enthusiast to the Netflix binger. Let’s dive into these plans:

Social Plan

Priced at $12.75 per day if pre-purchased and $15 per day onboard, this plan is ideal for those who want to stay updated on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and Snapchat. However, this plan restricts access to most websites and doesn’t support video/music streaming or Wi-Fi calling.

Coming in at $17 per day when bought in advance and $20 per day onboard, the Value Plan offers a step-up. Besides social media, you’ll have email access and broader web capabilities. Yet, keep in mind that music and video streaming services aren’t included.

Premium Plan

The crème de la crème of Carnival’s internet plans, the Premium Plan costs $18.70 per day if purchased before your cruise and $22 per day onboard. This offers all the perks of the lower-tier plans but with faster speeds and the addition of Netflix streaming.

Whether you’re on the Carnival Sunrise for leisure or a business cruise , you can find a package that fits your connectivity needs. Love posting real-time updates of your travels? The Social Plan might suffice. Need to manage work emails and other professional tasks? Consider the Value Plan. Want the ultimate web access experience? The Premium Plan is your go-to.

Cost Breakdown and Promotions

cost of wifi on carnival cruise

Prices have gone up significantly in the last year. Before May 2022, Wi-Fi packages started at a mere $6.80 per day. Now, the starting rate has nearly doubled to $12.75 per day . Typically, you’ll pay for the entire duration of the cruise, a change from the past when you could buy Wi-Fi for specific days only.

Special Offer : You can avail of a 15% discount if you pre-purchase your Wi-Fi package, which is certainly worth considering to save some bucks.

Additional Considerations: If you’re sailing to ports with 4G or 5G capabilities, you might want to weigh the pros and cons of purchasing a Wi-Fi package , especially if your mobile data plan covers these areas. Sometimes, Wi-Fi might only be necessary for those sea days when mobile connectivity is limited.

Internet Speed and Reliability

internet speed of wifi on a carnival cruise

Wondering if the Wi-Fi on a Carnival Cruise can keep up with your digital needs? Let’s explore what you can expect when it comes to internet speed and reliability on the ship.

Based on multiple tests, the Premium Plan of Carnival Cruise’s WiFi service has generally exhibited speeds ranging between 6-12 Mbps . In terms of the user experience, these numbers translate to relatively decent download speeds, especially considering that you’re in the middle of the ocean!

During our test run, the speed metrics displayed a ping of 680 ms , a download speed of 9.09 Mbps , and an upload speed of 2.64 Mbps . These figures indicate a high latency rate but acceptable download and upload rates.

It is important to manage your expectations appropriately. While the speeds are fairly good for a cruise ship setting, don’t expect the same kind of blazing-fast service you might have at home or the office. Pages will load, but they might take a moment. For example, visiting YouTube took around 10 seconds for video thumbnails to appear, while text headlines on CNN.com loaded relatively quickly, although images were delayed.

It is important to note that the internet speed may vary throughout the ship and during the cruise. We’ve experienced variations depending on the location and even on different ships within the Carnival fleet. This means you might find the connection to be sluggish at times.

Real-world limitations come into play as well. For instance, if you’re planning on posting high-resolution images or live blogging, be prepared for a bit of a wait. The speed is adequate, but it’s not high-speed broadband. The WiFi service aboard a Carnival Cruise is reliable enough for basic tasks and some moderate digital activity, but it does have its limitations. During your cruise, the service available for staying connected should meet your needs. If you have more demanding internet needs, it would be wise to plan accordingly.

How to Purchase an Internet Plan on a Carnival Cruise?

So, you’ve decided you can’t be completely off the grid while cruising. No worries—Carnival Cruise offers various internet packages to keep you connected. But what is the process for purchasing one?

Before Your Cruise

purchase carnival cruise wifi package before your sail

The most convenient time to secure your WiFi package is before you set sail . Here’s how to do it:

  • Visit the official Carnival Cruise website at `carnival.com`.
  • Go to the ‘Manage’ section located at the top part of the webpage.
  • Click on ‘My Booking’ to access your reservation details.
  • From there, you’ll see options to purchase an internet package.

The window to pre-purchase closes at midnight Eastern Time on the day before your cruise departure. Planning ahead offers you the benefit of securing your digital needs in advance.

Onboard Your Cruise

Missed the pre-booking window? No problem—you can still get connected onboard. Once you’re on the ship:

  • Turn on the WiFi on your device.
  • Open your device’s WiFi settings.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to purchase your desired internet package.

How to Use the Internet Plan on the Carnival Cruise?

So you’re finally on board, settled in, and now you’re itching to connect to the world beyond the waves. But how exactly do you get online? No worries, the process is usually a breeze, albeit with an occasional hiccup or two. Here’s how to navigate the digital sea on your Carnival cruise .

  • Initially, navigate to the Wi-Fi settings on your device and look for the vessel’s network. It will typically be named something related to the ship, like “Carnival Vista Wi-Fi” or “Carnival Celebration Wi-Fi.”
  • Next, open your web browser and head straight to CarnivalWiFi.com .
  • You’ll be prompted to enter your folio number and birthdate. So go ahead, type them in and click “Log In.”
  • A confirmation screen will appear. Click “Confirm,” and voila! You should now be connected and free to surf the web, check your emails, or update your social media.

It might take a couple of attempts sometimes, but don’t let that discourage you. Remember, you’re connecting from the middle of the ocean; a minor hiccup is a small price for such convenience.

And there you have it—your simple guide to getting online with Carnival’s internet plans . So whether you’re on board the Carnival Sunrise or any other ships in the fleet, staying connected has never been easier.

How Many Devices Can Connect to a Single Internet Package on a Carnival Cruise Ship?

number of devices connected to wifi on Carnival Cruise

When it comes to device connectivity on a Carnival Cruise, there’s a one-device rule , but it comes with flexibility. Your internet package allows connectivity for just one device simultaneously. However, the service isn’t locked to that particular device.

What does this mean? Well, suppose you start your day responding to work emails on your laptop in the comfort of your cabin. After sorting that out, you may choose to explore the various areas of the vessel. You can easily switch your WiFi access from your laptop to your smartphone on the carnival website. It’s that simple—just not simultaneous.

This feature can be especially handy if you want to juggle between devices for different activities, like work and leisure, throughout the day. It gives you the freedom to choose which device you’d like to use without being tethered to just one.

Is the Wi-Fi Service on Carnival Cruises Worth the Investment?

Determining whether the WiFi service on a Carnival Cruise is worth the investment can be subjective, as it largely depends on your specific needs and expectations. If you’re someone who needs to be connected for work, or if staying in touch with family and friends is a priority, then the investment is likely a no-brainer.

The flexibility to switch between devices adds a layer of convenience, and the different plans accommodate varying degrees of internet use, from social media browsing to video streaming. Nonetheless, it’s important to be aware that the internet speed and reliability may not match what you’re accustomed to with your home broadband.

For casual users or those who look forward to unplugging during their vacation, investing in a WiFi package might not hold the same value. Also, remember that many ports offer 4G or 5G data plans , which could be a cost-effective alternative to onboard WiFi, at least for the days when the ship is docked.

So, is it worth it? The answer will vary from person to person, but these insights should help you make a more informed decision.

Tips and Tricks for Using the Internet in a Carnival Cruise

If you’re looking to make internet access on a cruise less challenging, there are some helpful tips you can follow.

When to Purchase : To nab the best deals, buy your internet package before you board . Usually, booking ahead could net you a discount of up to 15%.

Using Free WiFi : Always on the hunt for freebies? Most ports have cafes or terminals offering free WiFi. Save your package for when you’re out at sea.

Switch to Airplane Mode : This is a must-do as soon as you board. It prevents your phone from using satellite signals, which can be very costly.

Avoid Mobile Data : Even if you have a roaming plan, the charges can skyrocket on a cruise. Stick to the WiFi package you’ve purchased.

Internet Cafes : Ships usually have internet cafes where you can access the web, often at a lower rate than the WiFi package.

By incorporating these tips, you can stay connected without breaking the bank.

In today’s interconnected world, staying online even while cruising is not just a luxury but often a necessity. Carnival Cruise WiFi offers multiple plans tailored to diverse needs, whether you’re a social media aficionado, a business traveler, or someone who needs full web access. The plans are flexible and cater to different budgets, with options to pre-purchase for added savings. The speed and reliability, while not on par with your home broadband, are commendable for a cruise setting. You even have the flexibility to switch devices. So, whether you want to share vacation snaps in real-time, close a business deal, or simply stay in the loop, Carnival’s WiFi packages make it feasible and convenient. While staying connected is essential, don’t forget to pack your chargers and gadgets to make the most of Carnival’s WiFi services. Remain connected, stay updated, and above all, enjoy a relaxed experience during your ocean journey.

Is Carnival WiFi per person?

Yes, Carnival WiFi packages are designed to accommodate one user at a time, meaning they are essentially per person. You can, however, switch the active device associated with a single WiFi package.

Is WiFi free on Carnival Cruise ships?

No, WiFi is not complimentary on Carnival Cruise ships. To go online while you’re on your cruise, you’ll have to buy one of the offered WiFi plans.

Is there WiFi extra on the Carnival Cruise?

WiFi is not included in your Carnival Cruise ticket price. It is an additional service requiring the purchase of a specialized plan for internet access.

Can I share Carnival Cruise WiFi packages?

While each WiFi package supports only one device at a time, it is possible to switch which device is actively using the service, making it somewhat shareable within that constraint.

Is cruise Wi-Fi expensive?

The expense of cruise Wi-Fi can vary. Carnival Cruise offers different plans at varying price points, ranging from $12.75 to $22 per day, as of 2023. Discounts are available for pre-purchase.

All Carnival Cruise Lines ships provide the Internet via a satellite connection. Onboard access is facilitated through Internet Cafe and shipwide WiFi coverage. Passengers can use (without any restrictions) their personal laptops, iPhones, smartphones and other WiFi-equipped devices on the Fun Ships.

In late-December 2018 was signed a contract with Speedcast (the world's largest global satellite comm provider) to improve fleet connectivity at sea. By this contract, Carnival increased the fleet's bandwidth in order to provide the highest-quality Internet at sea. Utilizing a total of 40 mini-satellites, Carnival now has the world's largest maritime satellite network. Specifically for Carnival, Speedcast developed the TrueBeam system, which constantly looks for weaknesses that would impact the satellite signal and instantly reroutes it to avoid interruptions. Such interruptions could be weather (“rain fade”), overcrowded networks and line-of-sight blockage.

Unlimited Internet package

Since July 2015, Carnival offers “massively popular, faster, cheaper and all-round brilliant Internet packages” that initially cost just US$5 per day. The “Social” Internet plan allows connecting only to social networks - Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Snapchat and other similar websites. Discounted plans are available for the entire voyage.

  • Carnival's unlimited Internet access plans (connected 24/7) are now available fleetwide. These plans can be used on all personal devices (and the ship's Internet Cafe) anytime throughout the voyage - until debarkation. Once purchased there are no refunds.
  • In May 2016, Carnival Australia introduced faster and cheaper Internet and social media Internet packages on the Australia-based ships Legend and Spirit . The improved internet access offers increased bandwidth and speed. The “value package” (cost AUD 30 per day) offers unlimited Internet. The faster “premium package” (cost AUD 50 per day) allows Skype video calls. The new "social media package" (cost AUD 15 per day) offers unlimited access to Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter.
  • Additional discounted plans for Internet access are available for the entire voyage. The new packages follow the company's 2015-launched "Selfies at Sea" phone app. Available for download (free of charge) at Android and Apple stores, the new mobile app collates a series of photos taken on the ship into a mini-movie which can be shared on social media channels.

NEW Carnival cruise ship Wi-Fi plans

In 2017, Carnival updated the cruise ship WiFi service fleetwide, introducing the option to pre-purchase both WiFi and Internet packages online.

Starting April 19, 2017, the company offers pre-purchasing internet plans (first introduced on Carnival Fascination and Carnival Vista , fleetwide rollout by mid-summer 2017). The option is available via "Manage My Booking’ (tab at Carnival.com) where customers can select a package for the itinerary duration.

Carnival's new Wi-Fi plans can be purchased (at discounted rates) by fully booked customers for either the entire itinerary or for a day (24-hour period). Daily packages are also available for shipboard purchasing.

In December 2023, CCL increased the Social Plan's onboard price from US$15 to $18 per person per day. The Value Plan now costs US$23 (up from $20), while the Premium Plan is priced at US$25 (from $22).

With pPre-purchasing Wi-Fi prior to boarding, the Social Plan costs $15.30 (previously $12.75), the Value Plan costs US$19.55 (up from $17), and the Premium Plan costs US$21.25 (up from $18.70).

NOTE : On November 2, 2018, Carnival raised the price of its basic internet plan by 60%. The new price for the "social media package" was US$8 per day ($6,80 per day if pre-purchased prior departure). Day plans for this package are not available - must be purchased cruise-long package. The old price for the social media package was US$5 per day ($4 per day if pre-purchased).

WiFi package cost USD 12 per day, with a discount price of US$10,25 (if pre-purchased prior departure). Premium WiFi package cost USD 17.70 per day ($14,88 if pre-purchased).

For both WiFi plans are available 24-hour / daily rates, respectively, $16 and $25.

  • "Social Package" (cost US$8 per day) offers access to the most popular applications and websites, including Facebook (and Facebook Messenger), Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Linkedin, WhatsApp, plus the most popular airline websites. The Social plan doesn't include Snapchat, Facetime, iMessage, in-app calling or access to any other apps or websites.
  • "Value Package" (cost US$12 per day, or US$10.25 if pre-purchased) offers access to all websites and apps, including e-mail, news, banking, sports, weather, all social media. The Value plan doesn't support music and video streaming or Skype calling (bandwidth-intensive services).
  • "Premium Package (cost US$17.70 per day, or US$14.88 if pre-purchased) offers the fastest possible Internet connection. Depending on the coverage, speeds can be up to 3 times faster compared to the "Value Package". The Premium plan includes all apps and websites, plus streaming services and Skype video calling.

Booked passengers can upgrade from one plan to another and are also allowed to use multiple devices per plan (including the ship's onboard computers), but only on one device at a time. All the new Carnival WiFi plans do not include video streaming (Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime) and don't support WiFi Calling (voice calls via the ship's Wi-Fi network) and Facetime (Apple's video telephony) services. Printing services on the ship are provided at no charge.

Cruise Internet package prices

Note: The above-listed Internet package plans are currently offered not on all ships in the fleet, but only on Dream, Glory, and Magic. The Breeze was excluded from this indeed small list. The line's official excuse is the slow satellite connection speeds at sea.

A $50 deposit will be charged on your S&S card (refunded upon returning the device, optional insurance for $10/day). On all other ships in the fleet, laptops are also available for rent - $10/day, complimentary with Time Plans, $50 deposit, optional insurance $10/day.

Carnival cruise Internet cost-cutting tips

  • before the sailing convert your email settings to basic (less graphic intense)
  • if you're planning to work online while sailing, discuss VPN limitations with your firm's IT specialist (Carnival will not be able to change settings onboard).
  • packing checklist: WiFi-enabled laptop/mobile devices, power supply (for each of your devices), data cables, headphones.
  • You can connect to a free WiFi when the ship is at call ports - ask some from the crew where. There's also free WiFi on the ship, but it's relatively slow (public areas offer much better connection / stronger signals than cabins).
  • phone calls from a Carnival ship cost $2 per minute (the charge through "Cellular at Sea" is $2,50 per minute). And remember:
  • 1 - the satellite Internet is a lot slower than the high-speed connection onshore (your data must be transmitted over a slow signal to a satellite 22000 ml above you, then the satellite bounces your data back down to the exchange). Tip: the onboard Internet speed is much better in the early morning (5 to 8 AM) and also around dinner times (6 to 10 PM).
  • 2 - the onboard Internet access is not guaranteed at all times (satellite communications are subject to disruptions due to weather patterns/location)
  • 3 - (some excerpts from forum reviews) "extremely slow", "slower than dial-up", "minutes are eaten pretty quickly", "because of the connection sometimes not everything is sent".
  • 4 - Verizon text message prices on cruise ships (international messaging): sent ($0,25 text, $0,50 data) and received ($0,20 text & $0,25 data).

Carnival's WiFi Internet technology

The line's owner Carnival Corporation started rolling out the WiFi@Sea Internet across technology not exclusively to Carnival Cruise Lines ships, but to all its brand lines fleets. The new technology features a hybrid connectivity (satellite and land-based data) system. It combines bandwidth with several available for pre-purchasing Internet plans, different levels of pricing and also new Internet packages.

The process of implementing the new system started in 2014. Carnival Corp's largest brand - the Carnival cruise line - was the first that moved from the traditional pay-as-you-go Internet (USD 0,75 per minute, or discounted Internet packages) to pay-per-day packages. The cheapest is the "social" package priced US$5 per-day allowing access to popular websites and apps. Next is the "value" package US$16 per day (with restrictions for some intensive websites). The third "premium" package costs US$25 per day (with full web access and guaranteed fast speeds).

The new Carnival "cruise WiFi" system is first-of-its-kind in the passenger shipping industry It's an enhanced (high-speed) hybrid wireless network service to be rolled out to all ships in the fleets of all 9 Carnival brand lines. The new system is expected to encourage the interest in ship cruising among the new tech-savvy generation. The new plans already show better penetration and higher usage rates. The new system allows a greater number of mobile devices, while the new Internet pricing is easier to understand.

This unique system integrates land-based, strategically located antennas (installed along the cruise itinerary routes), advanced satellites (over 31 satellite systems) and cruise port Wi-Fi connections, forming the Carnival's "smart hybrid" network. The system gives cruise passengers the highest possible strength of signal and bandwidth capacity. The new network provides Internet connectivity speeds 10 times faster than previously offered by Carnival.

All system upgrades, hardware changes, and new Internet equipment installations were done during the ships' dry-dock refurbishments .

In February 2018, Carnival Corporation partnered with SES Networks to provide the industry's biggest bandwidth to a mobile shipboard platform (first introduced on Regal Princess ). The new technology broke all previous myths about connectivity limitations at sea. The fastest cruise ship internet remained affordable (priced at USD 10 per day). The technology combines the SES Networks satellites with the MedallionNet and provides bandwidth of minimum 1,5 gigabits per second to the vessel. The tests were done on February 26, 2018, while Regal Princess was docked at the private island Princess Cays Bahamas . During the tests was reached Internet speed of 2,6 gigabits per second. Regal Princess is one of the "Medallion-class" Carnival Corporation ships linked to the company's MedallionNet.

Carnival cruise ship Internet Cafe

The Internet Cafe is open 24-hours, as a venue, it features private PC terminals (Windows XP) for web browsing, chat, and e-mail services. For guests convenience, there is an Internet Cafe Manager for assistance. Here passengers can browse through the following Carnival's "free of charge websites": Carnival.com, GoCCL.com, JohnHealdsBlog.com, CellularAtSea.com, and BarclayCardus.com (Carnival World MasterCard).

All these websites can be accessed without purchasing an Internet plan. At the PC terminals, you can't edit MS Office documents, but most files can be viewed (in their "read-only" mode).

Carnival WIFI, Fun Hub website and HUB app

The Fun Hub Carnival website can be accessed through Wi-Fi enabled devices. Guests must connect to the Carnival WiFi network and open an Internet browser. Fun Hub is also accessible at the complimentary Internet café locations with 24-hour access. Currently available on Carnival Breeze, Dream, Magic, Sunshine and Vista, the Fun Hub locations allow passengers free access to informative websites updated daily.

The Fun Hub site details ship’s numerous activities, including:

  • daily events, youth programs, entertainment options
  • food and beverage offerings, venue descriptions, sample menus
  • itinerary and weather information
  • latest news, sports scores
  • key shipboard personnel' biographies
  • ship announcements
  • deck plans and maps
  • frequently asked questions.

A filtering option assists in planning guests' day. FunHub is available free of charge on any Internet Café Fun Hub computer or Wi-Fi device. Internet access to sites that are outside the Fun Hub is also available wirelessly and through all Fun Hub locations. Charges will apply.

In August 2015, Carnival announced that the HUB app, offering passengers free access to onboard account balances, daily schedules, deck plans, dining info, and an innovative “chat” feature, had been so well received (following the successful trial period on Carnival Breeze) that it was scheduled to debut on all Carnival vessels by summer of 2016. Next in line, ready to welcome the HUB app, are Carnival Conquest, Carnival Glory, Carnival Pride, and Carnival Sunshine, by the end of 2015.

The new HUB mobile app provides guests with an at-a-glance, convenient view of ship’s features and facilities along with updates on events taking place onboard, all free of charge. The app is available for download at Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Its innovative “chat” feature allows passengers to exchange messages with their companions using their mobile devices. A flat fee of $5 is applied for the entire cruise.

The HUB app also includes precise day-by-day schedules of hundreds of onboard events, info on beverage and food venues, Sail & Sign account balance, itinerary details, searchable deck plans and more. Recently added options provide the ability to pre-purchase Carnival’s Bottomless Bubbles and Cheers! beverage programs and upload photos displayed on the 270-sq.foot Seaside Theatre during the cruise. Additional features are to be added in the future.

Carnival Corporation launched a new WiFi@Sea system on all cruise ships sailing in the Caribbean. The global fleet roll-out continued with Alaska (2015 summer) and in 2016 extended to Europe (Baltic, Mediterranean, Western Europe) and Asia.

Going on a cruise offers a delightful escape from everyday life, yet in our digitally connected world, staying in touch with friends, family, or even work can be crucial.

Whether you’re sharing those stunning ocean views on social media, catching up on emails, or simply browsing the internet to plan what you’re going to do in your next port, having access to WiFi on board a Carnival Cruise can be handy.

Unlike your regular mobile data plan, which may not work in the middle of the ocean and potentially incur hefty roaming fees, onboard WiFi provides a seamless and convenient way to stay connected.

Carnival Cruise’s internet service stands out in the cruising world, offering tailored packages that cater to different needs – from basic social media browsing to more comprehensive web access.

An elderly couple joyfully using a smartphone together on a cruise ship, with the woman laughing and the man smiling broadly, both casually dressed and enjoying their time at sea.

In this article, I’ll go into the specifics of Carnival’s WiFi options, detailing the costs and what each package entails.

Overview of Carnival Cruise WiFi Costs

WiFi plans on Carnival cruises range from $12.75 to $22 per day, depending on the package you choose and whether you pre-book it before you set sail. Purchase your plan before the cruise to enjoy a 15% discount.

Note that you must buy an internet package for the entire duration of your cruise. This means you can’t just purchase WiFi for specific days while onboard.

Breaking Down Carnival’s WiFi Costs

Let’s break down the cost of WiFi on a Carnival cruise. The Social WiFi plan costs $12.75 daily if you purchase it before your cruise. The price increases to $15 if you buy it later. The Value WiFi plan is $17 per day when bought before the cruise and $20 per day when purchased onboard.

The Premium WiFi plan will cost you $18.70 per day if you buy it before your cruise and $22 per day if you purchase it onboard. Therefore, if you’re planning a 7-day cruise, your total cost for a pre-purchased Carnival WiFi package can range from $89.25 to $126.

The Social WiFi Plan

The Social WiFi plan is designed for those mainly using social media apps and websites. With this plan, you can access popular platforms like Facebook, X, Instagram, Linkedin, Messenger, WhatsApp, Pinterest, TikTok, and Snapchat. You can also use major airline websites to check your flight statuses. However, you should know that other sites and apps are blocked under this plan.

The Value WiFi Plan

The Value WiFi plan offers unrestricted access to most websites. You can use the package to check your email, keep up with the news headlines, and do online banking.

This plan won’t let you stream music or videos or make WiFi calls on platforms like Skype or Zoom. So, this plan will not allow you to use streaming apps like Netflix and Spotify or engage in video conferencing on apps like Zoom and Teams.

The Premium WiFi Plan

If you’re looking for the highest tier of internet access on your Carnival Cruise, the Premium WiFi Plan is your best bet. This plan offers high-speed internet access, perfect for video or music streaming. It even supports video call services like Skype, Zoom, and Teams, allowing you to stay connected with loved ones or attend essential meetings from the sea.

It’s important to note that connection speeds and reliability vary across select ships. And remember, there’s no refund for weak connections as long as the service is accessible.

A young person in a vibrant floral shirt leans on the railing of a cruise ship, engrossed in using their smartphone against a dramatic twilight sky.

Deciding on the Most Suitable Internet Plan

Selecting the ideal internet plan for your cruise may appear challenging, but the right information can make this easier. Evaluate your requirements. Do you need a constant connection, or is occasional access okay? Technically, you could buy an internet package for every device, but it can get very expensive quickly.

However, sharing internet access across multiple devices is a way to save money. This way, when one person is done using the internet, another person can log in using their device. This method requires coordination, but it can be a cost-effective way of managing internet usage on your cruise.

Purchasing Carnival Internet Plans

You can purchase your plan before your cruise or once you’re on board. If you buy the package in advance, you can enjoy a 15% discount off the regular price, so consider your internet needs and budget before deciding on the right plan for you.

How to Access the Internet on a Cruise Ship

For seamless internet access during your cruise, consider purchasing a WiFi plan in advance. This can easily be done through Carnival’s website. Simply visit c, navigate to the ‘Manage’ tab, and select ‘My Booking’. Remember to complete your purchase by midnight Eastern Time the day before your departure to ensure you’re all set for your trip.

A person's hands are shown typing on a laptop that displays the Carnival Cruise Line online check-in page, indicating a user engaging with the Carnival VIFP Club's website to manage their booking.

Once on board, connecting is straightforward. Open the WiFi settings on your device, select “Carnival WiFi” or a network name that resembles the ship’s name, and sign in using your folio number and birthdate.

Useful Information About the Carnival Hub App

The Carnival Hub App is a handy tool that provides helpful information for your cruise journey. You can access it via WiFi-enabled devices. Just connect to the Carnival WiFi network and open an Internet browser.

The Hub app details the ship’s numerous activities, food and beverage offerings, entertainment options, and more.

Speed and Reliability of Internet on Carnival Cruises

Manage your expectations when it comes to the speed and reliability of the internet on Carnival Cruises. While the cruise line aims to provide the best possible internet speeds, the ship’s location and the number of users can affect the connection. Despite these factors, many passengers find the internet access adequate for their needs, especially with the Premium WiFi Plan.

A laptop screen displaying a Carnival Cruise premium Wi-Fi plan advertisement. The screen shows a large "PREMIUM" label over a globe graphic with a blue background. On the right side, details of the Wi-Fi plan are visible, stating "Premium Wi-Fi Plan Starting at $21.25/person per day" with options to "Add to cart" and additional information such as "Full Cruise" and "No Minimum Age." There are also buttons for "Share" and "Favorite."

Blocked Websites on Carnival WiFi

On a Carnival Cruise, you must know that not all websites are accessible via their WiFi service. Even with the premium package plans, certain websites are blocked. It’s because of legal and ethical considerations.

For example, adult websites are blocked on all plans. Carnival Cruise is committed to maintaining a family-friendly environment. Blocking such sites ensures that no children accidentally stumble upon inappropriate content. It also helps maintain a comfortable atmosphere for all passengers.

Furthermore, certain gambling sites are also blocked. This is because gambling isn’t legal in all jurisdictions, making navigating international waters tricky. Instead of dealing with these complications, Carnival Cruise has opted to block these sites altogether. Remember these restrictions when planning your online activities aboard the ship.

Sharing Your Internet Plan

You can share your internet plan across devices on a Carnival Cruise. You can only connect one device at a time. If you want to switch devices, you’ll need to disconnect whatever’s connected before connecting the other device. Use that to optimise your internet usage without purchasing additional plans for each device.

A couple takes a selfie on a Carnival cruise ship, with the man playfully raising his hand and the woman posing confidently, both in bright tropical attire against the serene backdrop of the open sea.

Is Carnival WiFi Worth the Cost?

Whether Carnival’s WiFi service is worth the cost depends on your needs and usage. If you plan on spending most of your time exploring the ship or participating in onboard activities, you may not need much internet access. However, if you know you’ll want to stay connected with friends and family back home, then it might be worthwhile.

Also, consider the internet connection’s availability when the ship is docked. Sometimes, you can get a 4G or 5G connection on your phone, but check for roaming charges. Some ports also offer free WiFi, which could offset the cruise’s internet service cost.

Concluding Thoughts

While Carnival’s WiFi may not be as fast as your home internet, it’s reliable enough for basic browsing, using apps like WhatsApp, and even video chatting. Plus, the ability to purchase a plan that suits your needs adds flexibility and convenience.

The cruise industry continues to evolve, and Carnival Cruise Line’s onboard WiFi offerings are a testament to that. So, weigh the costs and benefits, consider these cruise tips, and make an informed decision that best suits your needs.

Do cruise ships have Wi-Fi? A line-by-line guide to internet access at sea

Gwen Pratesi

Do cruise ships have Wi-Fi? Yes, but internet access on cruise ships is both better and worse than you might expect. If you're headed on a cruise vacation and want to stay in touch with family and friends — or stream movies and music on board the ship — it is possible to stay fully connected while at sea. But you'll need to adjust your expectations if you think the connectivity will be similar to a hotel. Connectivity can be slow and spotty, although cruise lines are working to change that.

Ships rely on satellites for their internet connections at sea. The strength of the connection depends on several factors, including where you are in the world and the weather. On many lines, certain locations — such as public spaces near the center of the ship — tend to have better connectivity than other places (like your cabin).

Cruise lines are adopting new technologies to make internet access more reliable — and more affordable. Lines like Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Holland America Line and Royal Caribbean, have installed Starlink in many vessels (fleetwide, in some cases). Starlink technology provides download speeds that range from 40 to over 200 Mbps (megabits per second) and upload speeds that come in at 8 to more than 25 Mbps.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Here is an overview of what to expect from internet offerings on cruise ships and a line-by-line look at the plans and pricing available on your next cruise vacation.

What types of Wi-Fi plans do cruise lines offer?

Larger mainstream cruise lines typically have several plans available for purchase, with the cheaper plans only supporting email and texting and the pricier plans allowing streaming and Wi-Fi calling. Most upscale and luxury cruise lines offer a complimentary basic Wi-Fi plan to upgrade if you need a faster connection.

Before purchasing a plan, consider how much time you'll be online, how many devices you need to connect (a smartphone, tablet and a laptop?) and how much speed you'll need. If all you want to do is check emails or send texts, you may not need to spend additional money on an upgraded plan at all. Most cruise lines, but not all of them, let you use a one-device plan across multiple devices as long as you're only logged in to one at a time.

Note that you do not need a cruise ship Wi-Fi plan to access the free services — such as ordering food or checking the daily schedule — on a cruise line's app.

Pro tips for using cruise ship Wi-Fi

carnival cruise wifi speed

Before booking your cruise, look for promotions and deals that include basic Wi-Fi. If you can't get cruise ship internet included, don't wait to purchase your internet package until you're on board: It's usually less expensive to purchase Wi-Fi packages before sailing. Buying a package for the entire cruise is typically a better deal than the daily rate.

Keep your phone in airplane mode while on the ship to avoid roaming charges and other fees. Satellite roaming fees are much higher than you realize.

Related: Can you use your cellphone on a cruise?

Download apps, movies and music before your cruise. Not only can you access this entertainment on the flight to your home port, but you will be prepared should the onboard internet be slow on a sea day when you'd like to catch up on your must-watch show or listen to your favorite tunes at the gym.

To find the strongest Wi-Fi signal on the ship, download a network analyzer like NetSpot.

If you don't need to stay connected while on board, head into port and find a restaurant, bar or mall with free Wi-Fi. Ask crew members on the ship about the best places for free Wi-Fi in port; they often know. Or, use apps like WiFi Map that show you locations of nearby hotspots when you're in port.

Related: How can I get Wi-Fi on a cruise for free?

If you're struggling to upload photos on a sea day when everyone is on board and online, wait until folks are off the ship in port to try again. Early morning and late at night, when people are sleeping, are also good times to find faster connections.

Line-by-line guide to cruise ship internet access

Want to know what's available at sea before booking your next cruise? Here's a list of the available Wi-Fi plans and pricing for each of the major mainstream and luxury cruise lines. Most prices listed are per person, per day for the length of the cruise, and for one device unless otherwise indicated. Note that cruise lines can update pricing and plans at any time.

Price: Starting at $19.95 per day

Azamara 's internet access is provided by AT&T and Wireless Maritime Service. Guests on board the line's ships can choose to use one of their own devices to access Wi-Fi, such as a laptop or smartphone, or they can log in at one of the onboard Touch workstations.

You can purchase prepaid packages during the first two days of the voyage, and pricing is based on the number of minutes — or days — guests will need access to the internet. The plans are only available for one device at a time, and unused minutes are nonrefundable. Prepaid options are priced at $19.99 for one hour of usage. A one-day pass is available at $29.95 for a full day. The daily sessions will end within 24 hours of purchase.

If guests buy a Full Cruise Unlimited Package, the cost is $19.95 per day. This plan can be purchased at any time during the sailing, but guests will be charged for the full length of the voyage.

Members of the line's loyalty rewards program, Azamara Circle , receive benefits and perks for internet options based on their level. Members who book a Suite or Verandah Plus category can also combine their loyalty and suite Wi-Fi minutes. Perks of membership range from a 5% savings, including 30 free Wi-Fi minutes, or 20% toward a Full Voyage Unlimited Package at the Azamara Circle Adventurer level. For Discoverer Platinum members, there's a 100% savings on Wi-Fi that provides a Full Voyage Unlimited Package, no matter the category of cabin or length of the voyage.

Carnival Cruise Line

Price: starting at $12.75 per day.

Carnival Cruise Line offers guests the option of three plans via the line's satellite providers.

The Social Wi-Fi Plan provides access to the most popular social media apps, including Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and others. Prices start at $12.75 per day (per person) if purchased pre-cruise. The onboard purchase price is $15 per day.

The Value Wi-Fi plan, at $19.55 per day pre-cruise (onboard price is $23 per day), includes the Social plan features and allows guests to browse the internet and send and receive emails.

The fastest connection available (at three times the speed of the Value plan) is with the Premium Wi-Fi plan. At $21.25 (or $25 on board) per day, guests will be able to place video calls and stream music and videos.

You can also purchase a single 24-hour pass for the Value plan at $25 or the Premium plan at $35.

Celebrity Cruises

carnival cruise wifi speed

Price: Starting at $20 per day

Celebrity Cruises uses Starlink as a provider for internet service across its entire fleet, with the exception of its Galapagos-based ships.

For cabins booked as cruise-only fares, ranging from inside cabins to Concierge class, Wi-Fi can be purchased separately on board the ship at $20 per day per device for a Basic plan, which allows guests to browse the web, send and receive emails and text via messaging apps. The Premium plan costs $35 per day per device and adds the capability for live streaming, video chats and more. With either plan, there's a 10% savings when it's booked pre-cruise.

If guests choose the all-inclusive cruise price , fares include a Classic Drinks Package (with nonalcoholic and alcoholic beverages), Basic Wi-Fi access and gratuities. AquaClass cabins always have Basic Wi-Fi included in the fare; suites in The Retreat always come with complimentary Premium Wi-Fi. If you have Basic Wi-Fi included in your cruise fare, you can upgrade to the Premium Package for $9.99 daily.

Benefits of the line's Captain's Club membership include discounts of between 10% off a Wi-Fi package for Classic-level members to a complimentary Premium Package for Zenith-level guests.

Cunard Line

Price: starting at $18 per day.

All Cunard ships are equipped with Starlink technology. You can purchase internet plans in advance of your sailing or once on board by logging onto the ship's Wi-Fi and going to the line's My Voyage app.

The Essential Internet plan is priced at $24 per day when bought on a day-by-day basis or $18 per day for the entire voyage. This option allows you to browse the internet, send and receive emails and stay connected on social media platforms via text and photos.

The Premium Internet plan includes video streaming and a three times faster connection speed than the Essential plan. The cost for this option is $36 per day, or $24 per day for the whole voyage.

The pricing for either plan is for one device at a time, and these plans can be purchased at any time during your sailing. If you want to connect to the internet using two devices at once, you can purchase an additional plan with a 10% discount.

Cunard World Club members may be eligible to receive credit toward internet on the ships: $45 per person for Gold members, $80 per person for Platinum members and $135 per person for Diamond members.

Disney Cruise Line

carnival cruise wifi speed

Price: Starting at $16 per day

Disney Cruise Line previously offered varied internet plans for different ships and cruise destinations but now offers standard packages across its fleet.

Guests can choose among three different packages, starting with the Stay Connected plan at $18 per day when purchased on a day-to-day basis and $16 per day for the entire cruise. This option will provide enough bandwidth to post photos and send texts on social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly called Twitter), Snapchat and Linkedin.

Basic Surf includes the benefits of the lower-priced plan (posting photos on social media) and the ability to surf the internet and send and receive emails. It costs $28 per day when purchased on a day-to-day basis and $24 per day for the entire sailing.

The Premium Surf plan offers the fastest connection speeds and features access to Apple Music and Spotify. It costs $42 daily (on a day-to-day basis) and $34 for the entire cruise. Guests will also be able to make calls on Zoom or FaceTime and view short-form videos on sites like TikTok and YouTube, along with other benefits like access to emails, web surfing and more.

None of the packages support video streaming on platforms like Disney+, Hulu and Netflix. Discounted pricing is available for up to four devices.

Holland America Line

Price: starting at $17.15 per day.

Holland America completed the installation of Starlink across its entire fleet in December 2023, which enhanced connectivity for the line's guests and crew. The line offers three Wi-Fi plans.

The Surf Voyage package is the most popular option at $17.15 per day per device and provides access to most social media websites and applications.

The Premium package, at $34.99 per day, per device, includes audio and messaging apps, and the ability to surf the web and check emails.

The Stream package is $45.99 per day, per device, and includes streaming capability and all the benefits of the Surf Voyage and Premium packages.

If you're considering other onboard expenses, the line's "Have it All" Premium Cruise Package is an economical way to get internet access and a Signature Beverage Package (with nonalcoholic and alcoholic drinks), specialty dining and a credit for shore excursions. The package is available on most sailings for $55 per person, per day.

Holland America's 5-Star Mariner guests receive a $30 credit toward a Wi-Fi package. Early Booking Benefits for Grand Voyages include 5,000 minutes of complimentary internet access in select suite categories.

MSC Cruises

carnival cruise wifi speed

Price: Starting at $17.59 per day

MSC Cruises offers two internet packages with a 20% discount for booking ahead of your sailing.

MSC's Browse Internet Cruise Package includes unlimited data, 24-hour internet access, chat and texts, and the ability to post photos and send and receive emails. Pricing starts at $17.59 per day per device (pre-cruise cost) and $21.99 per day if you buy it on board.

The Browse & Stream Cruise Package comes with the additional capability to video chat, stream music and movies, and post videos and live stream on social media. Pricing for this option is $21.59 per day, per device. The per-device price drops when purchasing either plan for multiple devices. Note that MSC does not let you switch from one device to another on the same plan, so make sure to sign in to your plan for the first time on the device you intend to use it on.

One-day internet packages are $29.99 per day (for Browse) and $34.99 (for Browse & Stream).

Voyagers Club members also receive discounts on internet packages. Guests sailing in MSC Yacht Club cabins receive a complimentary Browse package for two devices. It's possible to upgrade the package for an additional charge.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Price: starting at $29.99 per day.

Norwegian Cruise Line 's most popular internet plan is the Unlimited Wi-Fi Package. It costs $29.99 per day for one device. You can add a second device for an additional $15.99; discounted pricing is available for up to four devices. This package provides web surfing capabilities and access to email and social media apps (but not TikTok).

If you take advantage of the Free at Sea promotional cruise fare, you'll receive a number of free Unlimited Wi-Fi minutes, depending on the length of your sailing.

The Premium Package starts at $39.99 per day per device (add a second device for $25.99 per day). This package features Unlimited Wi-Fi inclusions, as well as streaming on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, TikTok and more. Discounted pricing is available for up to four devices. Guests can purchase an upgraded package before they sail or on board the ship.

Loyal cruisers and members of the Latitudes Rewards Program receive discounts of up to 25% on Wi-Fi packages based on their membership tier level. Benefits begin with a 15% discount at the Platinum level.

It's also possible to rent a laptop on the ship or surf the internet at one of the workstations in the fleet's 24-hour Internet cafe. Any internet package can be used with a laptop rental or at the onboard cafes.

Oceania Cruises

Price: complimentary to $9.99 per day.

Starlink service is currently available on Oceania Cruises ' Vista and Riviera, with a fleetwide expansion of the service to be completed by the end of 2024.

The line provides free, unlimited internet access with all cruise fares. Guests can log on to the internet throughout the ship, including in their cabins or suites or in public spaces and outdoor areas. They can also use the computers at the Oceania@Sea Internet Center on board their ships if they don't have their own device.

Two free logins are provided per cabin or suite for use on one device at a time. Plans that include access for additional devices can be purchased on the ship, and an upgrade to streaming services for movies or music is available at a cost of $9.99 per day.

carnival cruise wifi speed

Price: Starting at $24.99 per day

Princess Cruises claims the "fastest Wi-Fi at sea" with its MedallionNet technology , with download speeds of 12.6 Mbps and upload speeds of 1.9 Mbps. Carnival Corporation and Princess achieve this speed by working with SES Networks, a leading satellite connectivity provider.

With this internet access, you can check email, chat, surf the internet, FaceTime with your kids and pets, post photos and stream shows and music with speeds similar to what you might have at home.

Guests can choose from one-device to four-device packages starting at $24.99 per day that you can purchase through the MedallionClass app pre-cruise. Discounted pricing is available for up to four devices. Platinum and Elite members of Princess Cruises' loyalty program receive a 50% discount on plans that will appear as an onboard credit on the ship.

Guests can also purchase either a bundled Princess Plus or Princess Premier package, which are priced at about a 50% savings of the overall value when purchased pre-cruise through the MedallionClass app. Princess Plus includes a beverage package (with alcoholic drinks up to $15 each), Wi-Fi for a single device and crew gratuities. The cost for this plan is $60 per person, per day.

With Princess Premier, guests will receive the Premier Beverage Package (with drinks up to $20 each), Wi-Fi for multiple devices, crew appreciation, two evenings of specialty dining, a photo package and a chance to win prizes like a free onboard wine tasting, dinner at the Chef's Table or even a free cruise or cash. This package is priced at $80 per person a day.

With the latter option, you can also share the Wi-Fi availability with other passengers in the cabin who do not have Princess Premier.

Regent Seven Seas

Starlink service is currently available on Regent Seven Seas Cruises' Seven Seas Mariner and Seven Seas Grandeur , with a fleetwide expansion of the service to be completed by the end of 2024.

The line offers complimentary unlimited internet access throughout its fleet. Passengers have wireless access in most of the suites on the ships. However, bandwidth-heavy applications such as Netflix, Skype, YouTube and VPN are not included in the free plans.

One login is provided per suite for use with one device at a time. Gold and higher-level members of the Seven Seas Society and guests in Concierge Suites and higher receive up to four logins/devices per suite.

If guests are interested in streaming, they can pay for a higher-bandwidth plan at the cost of $9.99 per day.

Royal Caribbean touts its Voom internet as the "fastest internet at sea," with speeds six times faster than Wi-Fi plans you'll find on other cruise ships worldwide. However, some ships have been upgraded to Starlink service, with a fleetwide expansion of the technology to be completed by the end of 2024.

Royal Caribbean discontinued its basic Surf package and currently offers one plan — the Surf + Stream package. With it, passengers can surf the internet, send and receive emails, use messenger apps, live stream and post on social media and stream music and movies while on board the ship. The plan (for one device) starts at $25.99, and unlimited voyage packages for one device are $19.99 per day.

Passengers can receive a discount by purchasing packages that bundle a drink package with internet access.

Crown & Anchor Society members receive special discounts on pricing ranging from one day of Wi-Fi free to Diamond level members and two free days for Diamond Plus and Pinnacle members.

Seabourn provides complimentary, unlimited access to the internet to guests during their voyages. The complimentary Surf Wi-Fi Package provides unlimited access on one device per person. This plan includes general web browsing, email access and posting to social media accounts.

Diamond-level members of Seabourn Club and guests booked in Penthouse and Premium suites receive the Stream plan on a complimentary basis. Passengers in other suite categories can upgrade for a charge of $19.95 per day.

Silversea Cruises

Price: Complimentary to $29.99 per day

All Silversea Cruises vessels feature Starlink connectivity on board. Silversea's standard internet access is complimentary in Vista and Verandah Suites, while premium Wi-Fi (the line's fastest Wi-Fi connection) is complimentary for guests booked in Medallion, Silver, Royal, Grand and Owner's Suites.

On the expedition ships, the level of internet access is also determined by the suite category, except for Silver Origin, which has complimentary standard Wi-Fi for all guests. For guests on Silversea's full world cruises or Grand Voyages, all passengers receive complimentary premium internet access for the sailing.

On all voyages — and with both types of internet access — the complimentary Wi-Fi is unlimited for two devices used at the same time.

If guests have standard internet access but want to upgrade to the premium plan, the price is $29.99 per day (covering two devices connected at the same time).

Price: Complimentary

All of Viking 's ocean ships offer complimentary Wi-Fi. Guests can connect to the internet via a personal device such as a smartphone or laptop, or they can use one of the ship's computers in the Business Center, located on Deck 1. The line relies on a VSAT satellite terminal — what Viking says is "one of the best solutions" for internet connection at sea. VSAT can provide wide variances in speed depending on weather and location.

Viking's expedition ships and river ships in Europe, Egypt and the Mississippi also feature free internet access. On Mekong River cruises in Southeast Asia, the line advises that the best option is to use the public computers on the ship to stay connected, but the internet service is limited throughout the region. Viking also asks that guests limit large uploads, downloads and streaming so that Wi-Fi is more accessible for everyone on the sailing.

Cool Cruiser

How is the Wifi on the Horizon.  I am a content creator and plan on documenting the voyage and was wondering what the bandwidth is like.  This will be my first cruise on Carnival in 20+ years.

On my last cruise on the Horizon about 2 1/2 years ago, I thought the WiFi was pretty good for a cruise ship, but my needs were more modest than yours are likely to be (e-mail, random surfing, a few games).  I had the Value plan; you might investigate investing in the Premium plan - it's more expensive, but streaming is allowed with it, and it might be faster overall.

I'm done with the relevant content, but for the other person that's left, I'm trying to think of my Internet access at home back in 2001, 20 years ago.  I think I was a year or two away from DSL, which meant that I was still using a 56k modem to access the Net.  Pretty slow.  I can't imagine anyone outside the bridge having WiFi on a cruise ship then.  I'd say we've come a long way.

I’ve been able to upload videos pretty quick on Horizon’s sister ships, Vista and Panorama, with premium wifi. Those are the only three ships in the fleet I’d attempt it with. They significantly are better wifi than the other carnival ships.

I was very much on-line 20 years ago, I have been working on computers for almost 50 years, but 20 years ago, I would have thought about trying to connect ship to shore.  It will be interesting to see how Starlink impacts cruise internet.

On both Victory and Liberty in 2019, I was able to stream without issues on the value plan, using a VPN. So if you already have a VPN, it may be worth saving a few dollars and getting the cheaper internet plan.

I Work From a Cruise Ship for 3 Months a Year. Here's How I Stay Productive at Sea. Improved WiFi speed and reliability have been game-changers for remote workers who want to work on a cruise.

By Elle Hardy • Apr 24, 2024

Key Takeaways

  • Walter Biscardi runs his travel business remotely from cruise ships for three months each year.
  • He said WiFi reliability has improved, but video calls and finding power outlets can be challenging.
  • Biscardi recommends Virgin Voyages for remote workers because of the spaces to work and the WiFi.

This article originally appeared on Business Insider .

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Walter Biscardi, a 59-year-old travel agent based in Orlando. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

I used to work in film, television, documentary, and marketing, and I ran two creative agencies in Atlanta for 25 years.

A few years ago, my wife and I turned my second passion, travel, into " Where's Walter Travel ." We specialize in travel planning services for cruises , group vacations, theme park tours, and company retreats.

We live in an Orlando rental, but I run the travel-planning business from a cruise ship for three months out of the year.

We started taking advantage of our remote working situation after the pandemic

In a few short years of working on cruise ships, I've noticed that more and more people are starting to do the same thing.

We predominantly cruise the Caribbean. Last year, our three months were spread over six different trips on the Royal Caribbean , Oceania , Virgin Voyages , and Carnival cruise lines. If it were up to me, I'd be at sea for six months a year, but my wife prefers three.

This year, we'll be back on Virgin Voyages in June and on the Sun Princess in October. We're planning a few more, too.

WiFi speed and reliability onboard ships have been game-changers

a laptop sits on a table on a cruise ship

I don't always look for speed but rather consistency and reliability.

Even though the WiFi is reliable on most ships , it's still not perfect, and you need to manage your expectations. The WiFi on ships is satellite-based, so the signal will be slower if there's a lot of cloud cover. Rain may also temporarily cut it out completely.

The WiFi signal in rooms can be weak. When I get on board, I walk around public places, look at the ceiling, and find the repeaters, which amplify the router's signal. I park myself under a repeater to work, so at least I know I'm getting the fastest signal.

Video calls can be dicey, but voice calls over WiFi work well

Most of my work is using emails, social media apps, and a web browser, so I don't tend to have problems. The upload speed is the most difficult thing about working on a cruise ship.

Working from a cruise ship might not be for you if you're required to upload a video to YouTube or be on video for 100% of your Zoom calls. Zoom with video turned off works well. I post TikToks all day, but uploading to YouTube will fail almost every time.

Turn off your cell service on the ship, even if you have unlimited roaming overseas. Phones use satellite maritime cellular, and it's ridiculously expensive. I've heard of people who have come home with $1,000 cellular bills because they didn't turn off their roaming.

I can typically make most of my calls over WiFi, but you won't be able to on some ships. Texting from ship to land usually works well if you're using the same type of phone as the person you're messaging, but when you're texting cross-platform, sometimes it doesn't work.

Finding power outlets can be challenging

a laptop plugged into an outlet

Outlets on the Scarlet Lady. Walter Biscardi via BI

Typically, if you need to put in a full day of work connected to power, you need to stay in your room. One tip to finding power when you're looking around public areas is to see where they plug in the vacuum cleaners.

I strongly recommend bringing a powerboard with multiple USB sockets. I have one with 10 USB connections, so I can charge my phone, GoPro, and other devices simultaneously.

Virgin Voyages ships are the most friendly for remote workers

The galley on a Virgin Voyages ship is set up like a coffee shop, with easily accessible power and USB sockets at the table. There are dozens of outlets, as they're inviting people to bring their laptops and work from the ship.

I usually upgrade to the premium WiFi option, which can cost anywhere from $19 to $39 per day on most lines, but Virgin only charges $10 per day to upgrade.

I work in an office at home, so working on a cruise is a big change

I operate at sea as I do on land, with the same office hours available to my clients other than when I know we're going on an excursion.

Cruise ships are comparable to remote working spaces, but they offer so much more. On a cruise, almost everything is included: breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffee, entertainment, and most amenities.

If I want to take a break from work, I go to the pool. When I finish for the day, I'll go to the theater to see a show.

Meeting places are usually free on a cruise ship. Generally, all you have to do is reserve a conference room. AV facilities are usually included too, although you may have to pay a setup fee.

Remember to be respectful — many people are on board for a vacation. I've been out by the pool and seen people taking business calls on speakerphone, which is ridiculously annoying.

I suggest picking at least one port on every cruise and make it a 'ship day'

About 75% of people will get off the ship at any port, so staying on board feels like you have the whole place to yourself.

Activities like the pools will still be open, and the spas will often discount their services by 20-40% on port days.

Of course, I still recommend getting off and exploring as much as possible — that's what cruises are for.

Today's FCC's net neutrality vote affects your internet speed. We explain

The Federal Communications Commission on Thursday voted to reinstate rules repealed in 2017 that would prevent internet service providers from disrupting your internet speed.

The 3-2 vote along political party lines restores net neutrality – a policy that ensures your internet service provider doesn’t block or slow legal traffic, or charge more to deliver some content more quickly.

The commission voted in October by a vote of 3-2 to advance the proposal that would reinstate net neutrality rules and once again give it regulatory oversight of broadband internet, which had been rescinded under former President Donald Trump.

The FCC said it was also using its new authority to order the U.S. divisions of China Telecom, China Unicom and China Mobile to stop broadband internet access services in the United States, according to Reuters.

The Chinese carriers must discontinue service within 60 days of the effective date of the order, Reuters reported.

FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel noted the commission has taken similar actions against Chinese telecom companies in the past using existing authority, Reuters said.

What did FCC commissioners say before the vote?

The pandemic – and the way consumers used the internet for school, work and health care – made clear that to engage with the world, it had to be done through a broadband connection, Rosenworcel said Thursday during her remarks before the vote.

"It became clear that no matter who you are or where you live, you need broadband to have a fair shot at digital-age success,'' she said. "It went from nice to have, to need to have for everyone, everywhere. Broadband is now an essential service and essential services are ones we count on in every aspect of modern life to have some basic oversight."

Fellow FCC Commissioners Geoffrey Starks and Anna M. Gomez voted with Rosenworcel to approve the rule.

"Some, no doubt, will claim this is all a scheme for the government to control the internet. But let's be real," Starks said in his remarks, "It is about empowering consumers to control how they experience the internet while ensuring the provider is not impeding or prioritizing certain content."

Gomez, who also repeated her remarks in Spanish, said the action would offer protection for all consumers, "but especially for those communities that have historically been left on the wrong side of the digital divide."

FCC Commissioners Brendan Carr and Nathan Simington cast dissenting votes.

In his remarks before the vote, Carr said the internet has thrived in America "in the absence" of regulation by the government.

Carr questioned whether Internet Service Providers (ISP’s) will continue to invest with the new rule, saying broadband investments slowed down after 2015 and picked back up in 2017 after the repeal.

"I am confident that we will right this ship and I'm certain that the courts will overturn this unlawful power grab,"Carr said.

Net neutrality has been priority for Biden

Reinstating the rules has been a focus for President Joe Biden, who signed a July 2021 executive order urging the FCC to restore net neutrality rules put in place under President Barack Obama, according to Reuters.

Democrats were unable to make those changes during the time they lacked a majority on the five-member FCC but that balance changed in October, Reuters said.

During the Trump administration, the commission argued that net neutrality rules dampened innovation and discouraged internet service providers from putting money into the network.

What is net neutrality?

Net neutrality is the belief that an internet service provider, or ISP, should give all consumers fair and equal access to legal content and applications. Providers should not favor some, or block others. They also shouldn't charge content providers for speedier delivery of their content on "fast lanes," and deliberately slow down content from content providers that compete with ISPs.

Years ago, the hot-button issue even made for a  popular segment on John Oliver’s show "Last Week Tonight," where he urged people to visit the FCC’s website to give their opinions on the issue, which generated millions of comments.

When was net neutrality repealed?

Net neutrality was repealed in December 2017.

Then FCC Chair Ajit Pai said the repeal would help more Americans get high-speed internet access, as companies would spend more on building networks "without the overhang of heavy-handed regulation" and that would create jobs.

Net neutrality pros and cons

The FCC argues there are a number of benefits for consumers – the openness establishes basic rules for ISPs so they don’t block legal content, throttle speeds and create “fast lanes” for people who can pay for it.

Reclassifying broadband under Title II allows the FCC to apply cybersecurity standards, and will require ISPsto notify the FCC and consumers of internet outages.

Advocates and experts also say net neutrality is positive for consumers.

AARP Executive Vice President and Chief Advocacy & Engagement Officer Nancy LeaMond lauded Thursday's decision. "The rule will protect consumers online, helping to prevent online fraud and scams while safeguarding privacy and access to content," she said in an emailed statement.

Net neutrality protects consumers from ISPs controlling what you see, Chris Lewis, president and chief executive officer at Public Knowledge, has previously told USA TODAY. “Broadband is an essential communications tool, so we need the rules to be fair.”

Can net neutrality rules affect prices?

Lewis gives the example of streaming services, which create their own websites and apps to access the internet and reach the consumer. While these sites already pay for internet access, broadband providers want to charge an additional user fee that is passed on to consumers, he said.

“With net neutrality, that fee is prohibited. The savings are indirect, but they’re real,” he said.

Is net neutrality important for the internet infrastructure?

Mallory Knodel, chief technology officer of the Center for Democracy and Technology, has told USA TODAY old broadband network wires need replacing and ISPs haven’t done a great job maintaining the infrastructure or building it out in an equitable way.

It has led to a “dirt road effect,” she said, where low-income subscribers end up with deprioritized traffic or a nonfunctional internet.

With broadband infrastructure needing a lot of work, can net neutrality help?

"Only abstractly," Knodel said. “If net neutrality prevents profit-making off of preferential treatment and innovation in traffic shaping, then perhaps it follows that they would put efforts elsewhere, namely into maintenance and building out of the network. In any case, the latter has far greater benefits to consumers.”

The argument against net neutrality

The Computer & Communications Industry Association, whose members include Amazon, Apple, Alphabet and Meta Platforms support net neutrality, previously saying that the policy "must be reinstated to preserve open access to the internet," according to Reuters.

Meanwhile, USTelecom, whose members include AT&T and Verizon, have said restoring net neutrality is "entirely counterproductive, unnecessary, and an anti-consumer regulatory distraction," Reuters said.

In  2018, Verizon was accused of throttling Santa Clara County’s unlimited data during the Mendocino wildfires, disrupting their ability to coordinate until they upgraded to an expensive service plan. It resulted in a lawsuit showing the effects of the FCC’s repeal of net neutrality rules.

When browsing: What is a good internet speed?

At the time, a Verizon spokesperson told USA TODAY that the issue was not related to net neutrality court proceedings, but was due to a customer service error, and that Verizon had a practice for removing data restrictions during emergency situations.

A dozen states have net neutrality laws or regulations in place on their own, despite the 2017 decision to withdraw the requirement at the federal level, Reuters reported. Industry groups dropped legal challenges to those state requirements in May 2022.

Nevada's 'Internet for All' program approved to expand high-speed network

by News 3 Staff

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Federal officials approved Nevada's initial proposal to expand high-speed internet access for households across the valley.

The Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment program (BEAD) is a cornerstone of the Biden-Harris administration's $416.6 million 'Internet for All' initiative.

Officials from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration and the Nevada State Broadband Office shared their next steps during a conference on Thursday.

"It means Nevada can move from planning to action," said Courtney Dozier, Deputy Director of the BEAD program.

"It means they can request to commence the selection of sub-grantees who will build and upgrade reliable, affordable high-speed internet networks across the state. Most importantly, it means they can now request access to more than $416.6 million that NTA has allocated to Nevada."

The funding comes from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which includes a historic $65 billion investment to expand affordable and reliable high-speed internet access in communities across the U.S.
