Boat tour in Santorini.

A Private Catamaran Cruise to the hot springs and around the Santorini caldera is one of my favorite things to do in Greece.

Boat Tours of the Santorini Caldera & Volcano A boat tour of the caldera is among my very favorite things to do in Santorini . Unforgettable and a must-do! Don’t worry too much about which tour you book – they’re all good. Emphasis should be on getting something booked in advance before they sell out for your dates. Day tour or sunset tour? There is not a huge difference between the two types of tours beyond the time of day. A day tour/cruise usually runs from 9 or 10 am to 3 pm, serves lunch, and has lots of swimming. A sunset tour/cruise runs from about 3 pm to 8 or 9 pm, serves dinner, has a little less swimming than the day tour, and typically finishes by sailing beneath the Oia cliffs to watch the sunset. Private boat tour or small group tour? I’ll be honest, I definitely prefer the private. You get more input on where to go, how long to spend at different spots, what music to listen to, and (sometimes) where you get dropped off at the end. Yes, private tours are more expensive but I’d be shocked if anyone regretted the money they spent once they’re on the boat. The description says, “all you can eat and drink”, is that really true? Yes, but with some differences between tours. The private tours bring the drinks out before you’ve left the harbor. The less-expensive tours hold-off for a bit until the boat gets to the first destination and you’ve had a swim, which might be an hour to two, but after that, it’s an open bar. There are no ferries to the volcano. The only way to do a volcano tour is to do a boat tour. You can not access the volcano unless you’re part of an organized (private or group) tour. The Jet Ski Tour To The Volcano is amazing. All boat tours have great views of the caldera cliffs. Cruise options include: hike the volcano; swim in the hot springs (you can always stay on the boat if you wish); visit Thirassia and explore its villages; stop at Red Beach and White Beach to swim and snorkel; eat lunch or dinner on board, and watch the sunset below Oia. GetYourGuide.com is the best way to book tours in Santorini. If you ever need to cancel it’s usually much easier if you’ve booked through Get Your Guide.

The 8 Best Boat Tours in Santorini

All boat tours below provide meals onboard and have hotel pick-up and drop-off (which doesn’t sound like a big deal when you’re booking but makes the day so much easier and hassle-free when the time arrives). Also, all tours enter the caldera, sail to or near the volcano, and have plenty of swimming and snorkeling . Food on the tours ranges from surprisingly good to great. And the boats are very generous with their alcohol – after every tour, I ask myself how they make money when they’re so lavish with the food and drink. 1. Small Group Catamaran Cruise Sunset Cruise (2:45pm departure) or Day Cruise (9:45am departure). Awesome cruise around the volcano, staring up at the cliffs of the caldera. You stop at a few beaches for swimming and snorkeling, then swim in the hot springs near the volcano, eat a huge lunch or dinner, and finally see the sunset from the cliffs below Oia (for the sunset cruise). Lots of fun! If this tour is fully booked then try the Caldera Cruise or Santorini Sunset Cruise . 2. Private Catamaran Cruise Wonderful private cruise of the caldera. Great food and plenty of flexibility on what to see and where to sail. Ideal for a luxury honeymoon cruise, small group, or family. The day tour departs at 10:30am, the sunset-tour departs at 3:30pm. Both tours last 5 hours. Be prepared to be insanely pampered. If the above tour is fully booked – which is common from June to September – then try the Private Sunset Cruise . 3. Santorini Day Cruise Wonderful day tour with great food and friendly staff (10:00am departure). You can’t go more than 5 minutes without someone asking if you want another beer or glass of wine. But it’s far from a drinking cruise – the emphasis is on swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing on the top of the catamaran. You’ll visit a few beaches and the hot springs and have plenty of time to explore the sights of the caldera. (I did this boat tour last summer and it was awesome.) 4. Private Cruise on a Motor Yacht This is an incredible way to see the Santorini cliffs and stare up at the villages perched on the caldera’s edge. The motor yachts allow for much more freedom in getting around the volcanic islands and seeing the caldera from every different angle. On a catamaran, you feel like you’re on vacation. On the motor yachts it feels a little more like you’re on an adventure (though there’s still plenty of swimming, snorkeling, eating, and drinking). 5. Volcano Boat Tour Much less expensive and with a larger boat and group of people but still very fun. This tour is almost the opposite of the Sunset Catamaran Cruise. You get the volcano, hot springs (with swimming), and a visit to Thirassia island – but no beaches or going outside the caldera, and no sunset. This is the cheapest boat tour of the caldera. 6. Santorini Fishing Tour This tour is very well done and lots of fun. Boat around the Santorini waters on a local fishing boat. Fresh seafood lunch or dinner served on board (eat what you catch and empty from the nets). The daytime tour is best for families and serious fishermen. The sunset tour is best for couples. 7. Santorini Jet Ski Tour Not a boat tour, obviously, but super fun. We’ve done a couple of these tours (it’s always a small group of 2 to 4) to the volcano and they rank as some of the most exhilarating activities we’ve ever done. (That’s my son in the photo, 14 years old at the time.) The perspective you get as you ride through the caldera is awe-inspiring. A boat travels with the tour and is there for any emergencies or if the water gets too rough for beginner riders. The South Coast Tour is fun, but to see the volcano and caldera (which I recommend) you need to do the Volcano Tour or Extreme Volcano Tour. I would be shocked if anyone did this tour and at its conclusion didn’t yell, that was awesome!!! 8. Sea Kayaking Excursion A fun and easy-going way to explore the Santorini coastline. The Morning Tour and Evening Tour stick to the south coast of the island. The Round The Lighthouse Tour goes into the caldera and offers incredible views of the caldera cliffs.

Food on the boat tours is surprisingly good – sometimes great. All tours listed here have a sitdown lunch or dinner. So much to see. Awesome! About Santorini Dave

Santorini Dave Author Bio.

Dave: When you go swimming on these boat trips (especially one going to hot springs), where can you keep your valuables, e.g. your camera? It would be terrible to lose your photos. I am a trustworthy person, but wonder what other people do to avoid any problems. You can’t swim with a camera.

' src=

Honestly, it’s never been anything I’ve considered. It’s usually a small group of people and there’s never an issue with leaving your stuff. I suppose you could leave it with one of the staff, but I expect they’d just laugh and say, this is Greece, your stuff is fine, go swim.

' src=

Hi Dave, thanks so much for all your recommendations. How choppy are these boat rides? I am concerned about sea sickness if you have any specific recommendations? Thanks so much!

The boat tours are typically pretty calm. Most time is in the protected caldera waters and if the sea is really rough the tour will be cancelled, in any case. The boat tours are definitely less rough than the worst ferry rides, so if you’re ok on the ferry you’ll be fine on a boat tour.

' src=

Just found this fantastic website – thanks Santorini Dave, have been finding it really useful! One question about the boat tours please, we’d like to do one, will they take 5 year olds? Thank you

Unless otherwise stated, boat tours allow all ages.

' src=

Hi, Dave My friend and I are considering to book the Private Catamaran Cruise. Could you please give us some ideas about the range of the gratuities we should provide? Thanks!

Tipping in the 10% to 20% is appreciated. But the more the better – holiday workers really rely on tips to make a living wage.

' src=

Hi Dave – are there any boat trips available from Santorini that are maybe just 2-3 hours instead of a half or full day? Would like to be able to swim and just see some beautiful scenery, but will have a 4-year-old and husband that might be debatable if he would get sea-sickness so 5 hours feels like a big commitment. We’re staying in Oia – what might you suggest? We’ll only be on Santorini for 2 nights/1.5 days before moving on to Naxos. Thanks for all of your excellent insights!

There are no shorter tours on Santorini. Though if you booked a private boat tour (expensive, obviously) they would return you to port whenever you wanted. I will say the 5 hours goes very quickly. The only other option (as far as getting on a boat) is the ferry to Thirassia or the water taxis along the south coast beaches.

' src=

We are visiting Santorini the first week of November, will the water be too cold for these awesome excursions with swimming in hot springs and volcanoes? And if it is, is it still worth doing?

Yes, it likely will be too cold to swim for most (though not impossible for the bold). And also yes, it’s definitely still worth doing a boat tour even if you don’t swim. Views and perspective from the water are incredible any time of year.

' src=

Hi Santorini Dave

I’m looking to travel next year by myself possibly in May/September, which area of Santorini would you recommend I stay? I’m debating the time I’ll be staying but it will be between 5 or 7 nights.

Also, would you recommend any day trips to another island?

Many thanks, Alison.

I have several posts on this site about where to stay on Santorini and best towns and beaches. Take a look. In general, I do not recommend day trips to other islands. With the ferry schedules, it’s difficult to get more than a few hours on neighboring islands when you do a day trip. It’s much better to pack your bags and move to whatever island you want to see.

' src=

I’m going to Santorini and Mykonos for 8 days. Do you think it’s worth doing a boat tour on each island? I’ll only have 3 days in Mykonos.

Definitely do a boat tour in Santorini. For Mykonos it’s more of a toss-up. (If greek cooking sounds interesting to you, I’d probably do the cooking course instead of a boat tour.)

' src=

Hi Dave, Thanks for all the information on this site. Is there a sailing trip that just goes for a trip around the caldera, with no swimming or snorkeling? Maybe with the option of seeing the volcano close up and also the sunset? Thanks, Tansen.

Pretty much all tours have swimming but you don’t have to do it if you don’t want to. And while others are swimming you can just relax on deck and gaze at the views. The tour carries on even when some are swimming so it’s not as if you just sit there on your own, bored – there’s still plenty of fun on board the boat.

' src=

Do you think boat tours are fine during winter season? Otherwise, do you have any recommendations for winter excursions?

Many thanks in advance.

If by winter, you mean December, January, and February then there will be few (if any) boat tours running and I don’t think I’d recommend them. If, instead, you might be visiting in March and get some good weather then they’ll be fine (though still not many running). A wine tour is a great year-round thing to do in Santorini. And walking the Fira-Oia path.

' src=

For the boat tours, do you need to swim to the beach or is walkable to the shore once they dock as close as they can? We’re not great swimmers and if that’s requirement we’ll have to book another boat tour.

For tours that visit the volcano, the boat will dock and you’ll be able to walk off without getting wet. For tours that visit the hot springs, the boat will anchor about 30 to 50 meters from the hot spring area and you’ll need to swim to the warm water. Otherwise, most tours stop near a beach for swimming and snorkeling but don’t really directly visit the beach. You’re fine staying on the boat and viewing the scenery (which is great) while others swim. On most tours about half the people swim and half remain on the boat, so it’s unlikely you’re the only one left on the boat while everyone else is off playing.

' src=

Will the boat tour to the volcano and hot spring be suitable for those who get sea sick?

Generally, it’s usually pretty calm. Depending on where you depart from most of the tour will be inside the protected caldera. Catamarans are more stable than single-hull boats.

' src=

We are taking our kids to Santorini the last week of March. What private boat tour would you recommend to take for the volcano tour?

It’s not so much what is the best tour but more what is available. As the time grows closer (February or early March) search Getyourguide for Santorini Boat Tours and choose the most appropriate.

' src=

I tried to book the private boat tour and the sunset tour above but both were fully booked for our dates. Do you have another good boat tour that you could recommend? Preferably a private one. Thanks!

There’s another Spiridakos boat tour that is excellent and very similar to the private tour I’ve listed above. It has departures of 10:30 (day tour) and 3:30 (sunset tour).

' src=

Dave, your advice on this site is awesome and very detailed. My fiancee and I are going to be in Santorini in August for our honeymoon and are definitely booking one of the boat tours, but we just can’t decide on whether to do a day or sunset voyage. Anything you can tell us that would help make our decision easier? Not sure if this has an effect on the analysis, but we are staying in Imerovigli which I understand has nice views of the sunset. Thanks!!

There’s not a huge difference: the day tour has more swimming time, the sunset tour has more evening hours. Be sure to take a change of clothes for the sunset tour (it can get chilly at night). The sunset tour has a later starting date which allows you to do something in the morning.

' src=

Hello Dave.

I’ll be staying in santoniri for a day this November. Arrive Friday morning to either Katikies or Kirini hotel, and then leave late Saturday afternoon to Athens. (Though I have to check out from my hotel by 12pm). Would you recommend a boat tour? If yes, which would it be. My issue mainly time and not price.

Both the 5-Hour Caldera Cruise at Sunset (3pm departure) and the 5-Hour Small Group Catamaran Cruise (9:30am and 2:30pm departure) run into late November. Both are great tours.

' src=

I am about to book the semi-private boat tour and we are going the last week of June into July (which, from what I understand, is a very crowded time of year). Do you think that the day of the week that we book the day tour matters much (Friday vs. Saturday vs. Monday)? I assume everyone on board is likely vacationing so I’m not sure if this would be significant, but if it may make a different in terms of the number of people on board, I’d love to know. Thanks!

There’s no difference between days of the week and busyness. Do whatever works best.

' src=

I have 3 full days in Santorini in the beginning of July. I’m looking into a boat tour or sea kayaking. Is it worth it to do both? What would you suggest? Thanks for your amazing resources!!

If you can only do one do the boat tour but if time allows do both, as they each have a very different feel. It’s a more surreal feeling being in a kayak at water-level looking up at the huge cliffs (depending where your tour goes). But you do get to do more when on the boat tour – it’s a more complete introduction to the caldera.

' src=

I am looking to book the sunset catamaran trip this summer. In the check out it asks for passport information. I just wanted to check this was a normal request/it’s safe to provide my information to this company?

Yes, it’s safe and secure. The information is requested by the port authority but it’s never used. You could put in your correct name and then just make up a letter/number combination for the passport number. They’ll never know and never look at it.

' src=

We are going to Santorini for one day in July via fast ferry from Crete. Are there any shorter cruises around Santorini that we can do in that window of time that we will be there?

No, sorry. There’s no boat tour (that I know of) that would get you back in time to get your return ferry to Crete.

' src=

We will be in Santorini for 3 days after ferries from Athens-Mykonos then Mykonos-Santorini. We were thinking of taking the ferry to Milos for a day trip. Is it reasonable to do in a day or will we be ferried out? Thanks for your insight, love reading all of your suggestions.

Not worth it. If you want to visit Milos stay at least 2 nights and 1 full day.

' src=

Hi Dave, I’m planning a honeymoon in Greece this upcoming May and your site has been an amazing resource – thanks! Quick question: Is May too early for the boat tours that have swimming? Thanks.

Yes, they’ll be running in May (usually start in April) and you’ll be able to swim. But water can still be a bit chilly. And note, hot springs are not “hot” just warm.

' src=

Hi there, I love to read and follow all of your posts so thank you for always having the most up to date information! We will be in Santorini in July and I would like to do a catamaran tour of the island and go into caves and see some of the hidden gems of Santorini. Is there a tour or boat that would do that? Also, is there a boat that will take you to Mykonos for a day and back to Santorini? Thank you, Alissa

I don’t know of any boat tours that take in caves. And don’t know of any Santorini to Mykonos tours either. There are much better islands to visit on a day tour from Santorini. Ios for beaches, Naxos for inland sightseeing. (That said, I typically don’t recommend doing a day trip from Santorini as time is much better spent on Santorini than on a boat. If you do want to see another island then stay a night or two to see it best.)

' src=

I am looking for a beach hopping trip in Santorini to visit the Black Beach, Red Beach, White beach etc. tour starts at 4PM or 5PM. How much for 2 people?

For these beaches best to do it yourself with this boat from Akrotiri . It will be 10€ per person round trip. Can also take a different boat back to Kamari (if you were taking the bus, if you’ve got your own car then you’ll need to return to Akrotiri). Last boat is about 6:30pm (but double check) so you won’t have a lot of time.

' src=

Hi Dave – Awesome site. Just became a patron!

Trying to select the right boat tour for my husband and I (going in a few weeks!). They all seem great so it’s hard to select. What are the key differences between these three tours:

Semi-Private Luxury Catamaran Day Cruise 5-Hour Small Group Catamaran Cruise Sunset Catamaran Sailing Cruise in Caldera

In particular, trying to understand if it’s worth paying the premium for the semi-private luxury catamaran day cruise.

Many thanks! Lily

The single biggest difference is whether the tour goes through the day or in the late afternoon (and gets the sunset). The 5-hour small group tour is cheaper than the other two but will have a few more people on the boat and the food served is not quite as robust as for the semi-private and sunset catamaran cruises. More appetizers than the full meal you get on the other two. Fewer drinks are served as well. All 3 are great and you’ll love whatever you choose. My advice is to first decide whether you want the sunset or more sun/swimming.

Would like to do a private boat tour of caldera. It’s our honeymoon and want a super special day out on the water with food, wine, swimming, snorkeling, and the hot springs. Maybe take in the sunset too, but as you say, it’s a choice between more swimming/sunshine and sunset/evening so not sure what we’ll decide. What’s the best tour to book for our needs?

Thanks, Colin

The Private Half-Day Catamaran Cruise of Santorini is simply awesome. It is expensive but I’m sure you’re expecting that already. There’s a morning departure (for lots of swimming and sunshine) and an afternoon departure (for the sunset – but still plenty of time to swim too). Food is top notch. If it’s within your budget this is the one you want. (If you do the sunset tour bring a change of clothes so you can change out of your wet swimming stuff and enjoy the sunset without a chill.)

' src=

We are visiting Santorini in the next few weeks. Is there a ferry that 2 people can take on their own and explore the volcano/hot springs, or is it only by tour? Please let me know! Much appreciated. Gabriel M

There are no ferries to the volcano or hot springs. You have to do a tour or a chartered/private tour. There are small boats that do regular routes to the neighboring island of Thirassia (that forms the western side of the caldera) but this isn’t the volcano.

We are looking for the best sunset tour around Santorini. Our only concern is that we also want lots of swimming. If we do the sunset tour will we have enough time to swim?

Thanks Miller

Not sure what you mean by “enough” but you’ll certainly get a good stretch of time to swim. It won’t be 10 minutes and let’s go. More like 2 to 3 hours.

The black lava rocks are prehistoric creations with unusual and surreal shapes. Τhis area in the south of the island is not reachable by car. The only way to discover the volcanic beauty of the coast is a boat trip.

The eruption of the Thera volcano around 1613 BC buried the prehistoric town of Akrotiri but created next to it a unique landscape. You only need to glance at the precipitous red cliffs and russet shingle, both products of volcanic activity, to understand how the Red Beach got its name.

You can be transported into the exotic embrace of the Red Beach by only a few minute’s walk, or a short ride by catamaran daily cruises.

The area of Ammoudi consists of a small, lovely harbor that is probably the most picturesque location of the island. The Ammoudi bay extends under the impressive caldera reddish cliffs. There is no beach or facilities here, just the crystal-clear waters and a stupendous view of the Oia settlement standing on the top of the reddish cliffs. Ammoudi is highly recommended for its miraculous scenery and offers an alternative swimming experience, nothing like the cosmopolitan beach resort.

Forming a natural continuation of the Red Beach, the smaller White Beach with its crystal clear waters picks out another vivid hue on the natural colour spectrum. The imposing white cliffs contrast starkly with the mix of fine black sand, pumice stones and grey pebbles under foot, and stand out against the russet red of the neighbouring Red Beach.

The White Beach can be reached on foot from the adjacent Kambia beach, which sits between it and the Red Beach.

Prior to the volcanic eruption, the island of Thera had a circular shape and was known as Stroggyli, meaning ‘round’. In the eruption, large quantities of molten materials were forced out of the earth’s core, forming an underground magma chamber. When the roof of the chamber collapsed, a large portion of the island became submerged, leaving in its place the caldera, extending over a surface of 85 square kilometres.

The sea flowed into the caldera, creating large tidal waves, which overwhelmed the surrounding islands within a 50-60 kilometre radius.

One of your stops will be at the village of Oia, located at the northern tip of the island. Oia offers magnificent views of the caldera and the rest of the other islands. Depending on the time of day, the sun paints the cliffs with different shades of color and light like an ever-changing landscape painting. Perhaps this is one of the reasons that Oia attracts so many artists. With its cobblestone streets, beautiful old mansions and houses perched on the cliffside, you can admire the traditional Cycladic architecture for which Santorini is so well known.

From Oia, you will travel across the terraced island, through Pyrgos village and make your way up to the highest peak of Santorini, Mt. Profitis Ilias.(883 feet) Here a monastery of the same name was built in 1712. Although you cannot enter the monastery, you can enjoy its magnificent view of the entire island from the south end of Perissa Beach to the north part of the island were Oia village is situated.

After the photo stop, you will drive to one of the local wineries on the island. Here you can learn about how wines were once produced on the island, as well as learning of the unique way in which grapes are grown and harvested on Santorini. You will be able to sample three of the most famous wines of Santorini.

From the winery, you will make your way back to the town of Fira, the picturesque capital town of the island built on the rim of the caldera wall. Your guide will lead you to the major pedestrian street where they will give you a brief orientation of how to navigate the town before you explore on your own. Wander the endless maze of whitewashed streets looking for jewelry, gifts, or the perfect view of the caldera while you enjoy a coffee or wine. The tour ends in Fira, so you can enjoy the atmosphere of this beautiful place and return to your ship at your leisure.

Please Note: The tour duration does not include the time required to tender ashore from your ship. This tour ends in Fira Town.

How to Explore Oia, Santorini from a Cruise Ship

Village of Oia, Santorini

Santorini is an absolute dream of a summer destination. If you’re visiting the beautiful Greek Island of Santorini by cruise ship, it can be overwhelming to figure out how to see all of the highlights of Oia on your first visit, especially if you only have one day! This was the case for us, as we visited Santorini for the first time on a port day on our NCL Mediterranean Cruise. We only had 8-9 hours and we wanted to maximize our time exploring the gorgeous village of Oia!

This guide to exploring Oia, Santorini from a cruise ship will help you take advantage of your short time on the island by going over the best forms of transportation and logistics to hit Oia during your Santorini day trip.

Know Before You Go to Oia Village, Santorini

Norwegian Gem Cruise Ship at the old port of Santorini

About the Santorini Cruise Port

The cruise port of Santorini also goes by the Old Port, or the port of Skala. The cruise port is located beneath Fira, one of the largest villages of Thira and the capital of the island. It’s important to note that due to the small size of the port, your cruise ship will likely be docking away from Santorini, and you will have to tender to get to the island.

There are also typically several cruise ships docking outside the Old Port below Fira all at once. While we were in Santorini, we counted a total of 5 cruise ships all docked near the port.

Note, this port often has pretty extreme wind. Consequently, your arrival time on the island may be postponed a little bit based on the weather and water conditions. We lost one hour because it was too windy to disembark when we first anchored outside of Santorini.

Tendering Strategy for Santorini

Tendering from a cruise ship in Santorini, Greece

Depending how long you are in the port for, we’d HIGHLY recommend trying to be on one of your ship’s first tenders over to the island. This is going to save you a serious headache fighting crowds on your way up from the tendering area.

Due to Santorini being a famously beautiful destination, there is an absurdly high disembarkation rate on every cruise line for the port of Santorini. Whereas most ports on our NCL Cruise, for example, had about 40-50% people getting off the ship to explore on other Mediterranean ports; in Santorini, it was more like 90-95% of people wanting to explore. If you have priority disembarkation, this will definitely come in handy on this port day to beat the crowds.

How to Get Up to Fira, Santorini from a Cruise Ship

There are two main ways to get from the Old Port of Santorini into the village of Fira, before you can get to Oia.

Option #1: Take the Cable Car to Fira

Views of Santorini from a cruise ship at sunset

The entrance to the Cable Car is a short walk away from where you will tender in from your cruise ship. There really is no need to pre-book these tickets in advance. You can buy them when you walk up using cash or credit card. However, you can only buy one way tickets. So, keep in mind you will have to wait in the ticket line on the way down as well.

We were lucky enough to be on the first tender and only had to wait about 5 minutes in line for the cable car, whereas we met those on the 20th tender and they ended up walking up the hill instead because the lines for the car were ridiculously long and digging into their exploration time.

This is definitely our recommended option if you don’t mind waiting in lines with the crowds. When coming back down on the cable car, if you can beat the shore excursions back, you’ll likely have a much shorter wait. Just make sure to give yourself enough time to wait in line and get back to the cruise ship on time.

Option #2: Hike the Switchbacks

switchbacks at the cruise port in santorini greece

This is not our recommended option for going uphill, however, if the lines are too long for the cable car and you’re looking to maximize time, this option could be for you.

There are a few things to note about this option. If considering this option, make sure you are in fairly good shape and health. If you are visiting in the summer time, Santorini can be incredibly hot. The hike up to the top has little to no shade. Make sure to bring lots of water, wear sunscreen and wear UPF protection to avoid getting sunburned. You will also want to make sure you wear shoes with good tread because the cobblestone can get quite slippery! You will also want to make sure you keep an eye out for the mule poop along the way to avoid stepping in it.

If you are in shape and fairly active, give yourself about 45 minutes to head up the hill and 30 minutes to get down the switchbacks if you decide to go this route. If you want to air on the side of caution allot 1 hour.

Note : Technically, you can also take the mules up and down the switchbacks. However, we do not recommend this option at all. The mules don’t get treated ethically and are subjected to abuse.

How to Get From Fira to Oia

Hire a water taxi.

How to get to Oia from the Fira cruise port

This is going to be your most hassle free option to get to Oia, however, it will cost you a bit more than your other choices. If budget is not an issue for you, then you can definitely maximize your time on land here by taking a water taxi over to Ammoudi Bay from the cruise port.

For this option, you will not need to take the cable car or switchbacks to the top of Fira, rather you will leave Fira from the dock where you get off your tender boat.

You can either hire a completely private water taxi (most expensive option) or there’s a public water taxi for around 30 Euros. The caveat here is that you’ll have to wait until it’s entirely full for it to leave the port. This can take up 20-45 minutes so it can be a gamble on your valuable time. Keep in mind, these water taxis are typically only one way and you will return to the port via another mode of transport.

The water taxi itself will take about 20 minutes to get you from the cruise port over to the bottom of Ammoudi Bay.

Depending on which option of water taxi you book, you will either have a bus waiting for you to take you to the top of Oia village, or you will have to walk up the hill from Ammoudi Bay to the top of Oia Castle if you plan to get into downtown Oia. This also consists of a steep switchback filled walk. Prepare yourself for a 15-20 minute hike upwards at a minimum. It’s not nearly as bad as the switchbacks over by the cruise port, however.

Water Taxi Options

Water Taxi in Oia Village, Santorini stationed outside of Ammoudi Bay

This private speedboat water taxi seems to offer round trip transport from the cruise port of Fira by speedboat to Ammoudi, with a shuttle bus up to Oia Village, and bus transport back to the cable cars above Fira. This option does not include the cost of a cable car on the way down from Fira to the cruise ship tenders. For more information, you can check them out here . You can find another option for a private tour here , although keep in mind it is 220 Euros per way for a private group.

Taking a Bus from Fira to Oia

Oia, Santorini

Once you get to the top of the switchbacks or cable car, you can walk about 10 minutes down the street to the local bus station and hop on a 20-30 minute bus ride over to Oia. The bus will depart from the Imerovigli bus stop, and it runs from Fira to Oia typically between 7am-11pm. The return bus from Oia to Fira runs between 7:20am-11:20pm. This will cost about €1.60 per person per way and you need to have cash, preferably the exact amount. For the full timetable of when buses leave, click here.

Keep in mind, there will likely be lines for the busses as well, so you might have to wait for 2-3 to get on one that has space. We got very lucky and got on the first one there and back when we disembarked, but our friends had to wait for 3-4 buses coming back from Oia.

Taking a Taxi from Fira to Oia

Oia Village in Santorini, Greece

If you don’t want to be limited to the bus schedule, you can hire a taxi or private tour to come and take you around to the village. This is definitely the more expensive option and you will need cash for a taxi as most don’t take credit card. If you don’t have Euros on you, don’t fret, there are ATMs walking distance around the village to withdraw some cash if needed. Expect to spend around €30-40 each way.

If you hire a taxi (or want to have one on call just in case), make sure to get their phone number for a return service as there’s not as many options coming back from Oia as there are going out there from the cruise port and you don’t want to get stranded. You can also pre-book a taxi in advance. Keep in mind, once you get back to Fira, you will still have to either take the cable car or hike down the hill to get back to the cruise ship regardless if you do a tour/excursion or not.

Travel Time from Oia to Fira

Famous blue domes of Oia, Santorini in Greece

It is vital that you give yourself enough time to get back down to the cruise ship ! We repeat – don’t get caught up in the magic of Oia and miss your ship’s all aboard time. The lines for the cable car get pretty crazy, especially if there are multiple cruise ships in port at once. Don’t take the risk of cutting it close and getting left behind! If that is a big concern for you, you may want to book an NCL shore excursion for the additional protection of not getting left behind if your tour runs late.

Although we got lucky and only had to wait for about 15-20 minutes for the cable car, we’ve heard from many people that they waited over an hour to take it down. So, if there’s anything you take away from this blog, it’s to give yourself extra time to get back down to the ship!!! Wear comfy shoes in the event that you need to book it down the switchbacks.

view of Fira Village in Santorini at night from a cruise ship

In total, it took us 20 minutes to bus back from Oia to Fira, 10 minutes to walk back to the cable car, 15 minutes in line for tickets, and an additional 5 minutes to head down to the tender. So, in total, it took us about 40-45 minutes from Oia to Fira. However, we got lucky with the bus schedule and queue for the cable car, so let this be the minimum amount of time you give yourself when planning.

We hope this guide to exploring Oia, Santorini from a cruise ship helps you plan your time adventuring better!

Most Common Questions About Visiting Oia & Santorini from a Cruise Ship:

Adventure couple looking at Fira, Santorini cruise port from balcony stateroom on cruise ship

  • Should I rent a car on Santorini? No, we would not recommend renting a car on Santorini. The public transport system is very good. Additionally, the streets are very crowded and narrow; so, it’s probably best you don’t drive around.
  • Can I watch the sunset in Oia and make it back to the cruise ship? As avid photographers, you know we want to say yes – HOWEVER, we would advise against this, depending on what time sunset and your all aboard time is. Although it’s a bummer, you can still see an incredible sunset on your way back to the ship in Fira. If sunset is earlier in the year and you have a solid amount of time to get back to the port, go for it.
  • Should you tip taxi drivers in Oia, Santorini? Typically, taxi drivers do not expect a tip in Greece. However, they do expect you to round to the nearest Euro, so you often won’t get change back. Rounding up your bill, rather than leaving a percentage based tip, is completely acceptable. If you’ve experienced outstanding service, some people leave an optional tip of 10%, but it’s absolutely not necessary.

Overall, we hope you have the best trip to Santorini. As long as you are prepared, plan your transport in advanced, and pack a lot of patience for the crowds, you will have an amazing time in Oia.

How to get from Santorini Cruise Port to Oia, Greece

If you’re visiting Santorini on a cruise and you’d like to get from Santorini cruise port to Oia then keep reading. In today’s post I’m sharing two of the easiest ways to get from Santorini cruise port to Oia, the top things to do in Oia when you get there and some of the best places to eat in Oia. Oh, and some gorgeous photos because Oia is just a photographer’s dream!

The beautiful village of Oia in Santorini is one of the most famous spots on the island, if not in the whole of Greece.

The dazzling white buildings with blue domed roofs perched on the hillside create the most incredible views. With the blue sea as a backdrop and those famously incredible sunsets, it’s no wonder that Oia Greece is such a popular place.

Oia attracts more than its fair share of photographers, Instagrammers and influencers who are all searching for the most incredible views. Honestly, this place is a photographer’s dream come true. And even if you aren’t a pro behind the lens, you’ll still love snapping a few shots because it’s virtually impossible to take a bad photo in this place (although I’m sure my dad would give it a good go!)

Some people will stay in Oia but many people will be visiting on a day trip, either from a neighbouring town on Santorini, from a nearby island or on a cruise ship.

I was visiting Santorini on a cruise ship so I thought I’d begin by telling you how to get to Oia from Santorini Port via a cruise ship!

It’s actually very easy to visit Oia from a cruise ship. You don’t need to take a tour or an excursion as you can easily do it yourself. In fact, I’d strongly advise against taking a group tour because the streets in Oia are very narrow so it’s easier to explore alone rather than in a big group.

Not only that but cruise excursions are often very expensive and they employ their own staff, meaning local people and small businesses don’t make any money from your visit. Small islands such as Santorini make a huge portion of their income from cruise passengers so I feel it’s important to support them.

Visiting Oia Greece from a cruise ship

This is how you get from Santorini Port to Oia…

1. cruise ship, 2. tender boat to shore, 3. cable car up the hill to fira, 4. taxi from fira to oia, 4. coach from fira to oia, tender boat to the shore – free.

When your ship arrives in Santorini you’ll need to take a tender boat from the ship to the mainland. There isn’t a big port here so large ships will anchor out at sea and it’ll take 10 minutes to travel to the shore on the tender.

You won’t need to pay for this, it’s something your cruise will provide for free.

Travel Hack Tip: If you get seasick then it’s worth taking a seasickness tablet before boarding the tender. This small boat can be rocky in comparison to the ship. Loo for an anti-drowsy seasickness tablet so you don’t feel sleepy once you arrive in Santorini! Alternatively, something sugary like a lollipop or a can of fizzy drink can really help with the queasiness.

Cable car – 6 euros

From the shore you’ll be able to take the cable car to the top of the hill.

The cable car costs six euros (accurate as of 05.10.21) each way and you are able to pay via card so you don’t need to worry about having cash.

You can also walk up and down the steep hill as there are large steps all the way up and down.

There are donkeys available to hire to take you up the hill but this isn’t recommended for adults and there has been a lot of recent backlash against this as it is thought to be cruel to the donkeys.

The town at the top of the hill is Fira and it’s a pretty place so definitely worth a look around if you have plenty of time. If you don’t have much time then I’d skip it and head straight to Oia.

Thera

Taxi from Fira to Oia

The easiest way to get a taxi to Oia is to now take a taxi. There is a coach but the queues were crazy and we didn’t want to waste too much time waiting for a bus!

Our taxi cost 40 euros for four people on the way from Fira to Oia and then on the return journey there were just two of us and it cost 30 euros.

We paid in cash and there are plenty of cash machines available in both Fira and Oia.

If you’re struggling to find a taxi then you can go into a travel agent/excursion shop and ask for one there. There are lots of shops selling excursions and tours. The first shop we went into quoted us something ridiculous for a taxi so it’s worth trying a couple!

In Oia, we got a taxi from the bus station and fees seemed to be set based on the number of people you have.

You could also pre-book a taxi online. Here’s a link to a Santorini transfer service with great reviews!

Visiting Oia Greece

Bus from Fira to Oia – 2.30 euros

You can also take a local bus from Fira to Oia. It departs every 30 minutes and costs just 2.30 euros.

The bus actually departs from Imerovigli which is just one stop from Fira and is a short walk.

The bus from Fira to Oia runs between 7am-11pm.

The return bus from Oia to Fira runs between 7.20am-11.20pm.

But, like I said above, the bus was SO busy and the queue was enormous for the bus to Oia and back from Oia to Fira.

I think it’s better to try and get a taxi full of people and all take a taxi together.

If you plan to watch the sunset in Oia and then go back to the cruise ship

If you’re planning to watch the sunset in Oia and then go back to the cruise ship on the same evening then I highly recommend checking and double checking the times of everything.

The cable car back down to the cruise port finishes between 4pm and 11pm depending on the time of year. Don’t get caught out and miss your cruise departure because you can’t get back down to the cruise! You can of course run down the steps if you miss the last cable car but it’s something you’re going to need to factor in time-wise!

Is car rental in Santorini an option?

If you’re visiting Santorini for a day during a cruise then I wouldn’t recommend hiring a car. By the time you’ve got through all of the paperwork to hire it, found the car, get to where you’re going and parked up…well you might as well just taken a taxi.

What about hiring a quad bike on Santorini?

Hiring a quad bike or a scooter on Santorini is an option. If you’re a confident and competent driver then I think this is a better option than hiring a car because they’re much easier to park. You’ll find scooter and quad bike hire shops around Fira.

OK, so we’ve figured out how to get to Oia from the cruise port. What are you going to do while you’re there!?

Things to do in Oia Greece

So you’ve arrived in Oia! What do you do!?

Oia isn’t the kind of place where you need to rush around ticking sights off your list. Oia is a place to stroll and mooch and stop for a drink, stop for a coffee, have a look in the shops, stop for ice cream or lunch and stop at every beautiful photo location along the way.

If you’re wondering how to find these beautiful photo locations in Oia, don’t worry, you’ll see them!

The photo spots in Oia are often surrounded by a small group of people queueing patiently to get a photo. It isn’t unusual to see whole families using the perfect backdrop for an informal photo shoot so the queues can be slow but at least you have gorgeous views to admire while you wait your turn!

Visiting Oia Greece

Things to do in Oia, Greece

#1. watch the sunset.

Watching the sunset in Oia is definitely the most popular thing to do. BUT be aware that it gets very very busy. So busy I’d say it’s unenjoyable. It’s a bit ridiculous and it can be hard to get around. If you’ve got time then definitely stay for the sunset but don’t imagine it’s as relaxing and peaceful as the photos would lead you to believe!

Travel Hack Tip: If you have time then I’d definitely take a sunset boat trip. Whether it’s a romantic cruise or a party boat, this would be a beautiful way to see the sunset.

santorini boat tour oia

#2. Walking tour with a photographer

Want to see all the hotspots in Oia and get gorgeous photos you’ll treasure for a lifetime? Then this might be the tour for you.

Visiting Oia Greece

OK, my personal favourite and not exactly a detailed travel tip from a seasoned travel blogger but I actually don’t think you need a plan when you visit Oia. Just have a wander, get lost, get found, keep walking, take photos, find a cafe, find a bar and generally have a lovely time!

Travel Hack Tip: If you’re getting off the beaten path then I like to drop a pin in Google Maps to remind myself where I need to get back to. It’s unlikely you’ll get lost in Oia but it gives you a bit of confidence knowing you’re not going to lose your bearings.

Visiting Oia Greece

#4. Walk to the windmills

Make sure you walk over to the windmills – partly because they’re beautiful but they also make a good destination to walk to before turning back.

The windmills are actually luxury suites you can rent. It’s a serious bucket list kind of place if you’re planning a special holiday!

Oia windmills

#5. Visit the castle

The Castle of St Nicholas isn’t really anything to write home about but it’s worth visiting for the panoramic views of Oia Greece!

view from the castle Oia

#6. Shop in the little boutiques

There are so many gorgeous little shops in Oia. You’ll stumble upon lots of boutiques where local crafters are painting, sculpting, cutting, sewing and generally making lovely souvenirs. Shop around to find the really authentic ones.

Oia

#7. Wine tasting + highlights tour

There are lots of tours offering a ‘highlights’ tour as well as wine tasting and sunset in Oia. If you’ve got one full day in Santorini then this would be an incredible way to cram in a lot!

Where to eat in Oia Greece

We found that it is best to have an idea of where you’d like to eat in Oia. There are lots of options and many places were very busy or just didn’t feel quite right for us.

We ate at Karma Greek Restaurant which I can’t recommend enough. It doesn’t have any views but felt like a peaceful sanctuary off the busy streets. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was cosy, relaxed and stylish.

santorini boat tour oia

Pito Gyros Traditional Grill House is a great option for meat eaters. They serve traditional Greek dishes in an informal setting. It’s great value here too.

Fino Cocktail Bar and Restaurant is the one for you if you’d like a modern, stylish bar with delicious cocktails.

Lolita’s Gelato is the place to stop for a quick gelato pick-me-up to keep you refreshed while you’re walking the busy streets!

Armeni Restaurant is the best option if you’d like to eat with a view out to sea!

My cruise: The details!

I’ve travelled on many cruise ships and this cruise with Celebrity Cruises was one my favourites and this stop at Oia was one of my favourite cruise destinations! There was no rushing around or packing a day with activities. Just a lovely, relaxing, gentle stroll in one of the most beautiful locations possible! I also fell in love with Santorini Island so this gave me a lovely taster of what it’s like there and reassured me that I should come back at some point!

My cruise started in Athens and Santorini was our first stop.

We went to:

It was dreamy!

Thursday 4th of April 2024

Thanks for this! Santorini is the first stop on my very first cruise ever. My concern is that I’ll be traveling with my mom who is older and has trouble with stairs. Every excursion listed with Azamara says “not recommended for slow walkers” so I feel we have to do it on our own. But I’m so very nervous of these lines to get back down the cable car. We will be there in August. Do you think she’ll have issues in with steps? I had read you can also take a boat from the port to oía then bus it back to Fira (to avoid long lines possibly in the morning). Anyway, I just don’t want my first port of call ever to be stressful! ?

Monday 8th of April 2024

Hi Joey, I totally understand. I think the first thing to remember is that cruise ships typically have a lot of older guests with mobility issues so you won't be alone. From memory, you won't have trouble with steps when taking the cable car. There may be a queue but you could avoid this by getting off the ship early. I'd recommend taking a taxi from Fira to Oia. It's a little more expensive but stops it being stressful and will make things easier for your mom. I wouldn't worry about queues for the cable car on the way back because everyone queueing for the cable car will be getting on your ship so the ship won't leave if there's a long queue of people at the cable car.

Hi Monica, Thank you for the great information about your Greece trip. I was wondering what taxi service you used there are so many to choose from. I also would like to know when you get off the cable car if you could direct me to where the taxi’s are located. Thank you

Hi Debbie, I don't remember exactly but they weren't difficult to find. Lots of touts for the taxis will come out to find you and there are so many shops. Just follow the crowd and head towards the shops and you'll be bombarded with taxi options, I promise! I know it's hard to research it from home but they have hundreds of tourists every day looking for taxis so you'll be very well catered for.

Some even offer the opportunity to watch the beautiful sunset on board!

-Catamaran Cruises: A Catamaran Cruise is also popular among travelers to Santorini, as apart from the chance to see the Volcano from a close distance and take a dive in the warm waters near it, it takes you to the most picture-perfect beaches on the island, offers meals such as a buffet meal , a full BBQ meal , or even vegetarian options, and provides unlimited local wine, beers, and soft drinks.

-Yacht Cruises: For those who wish to organize a special event on board, like a birthday party or a wedding proposal , a yacht cruise is the best choice. It is a private option for just you and your group or loved one, which ensures that you will have a comfortable and thrilling experience!

Exploring Santorini: How to get from Santorini Cruise Port to Oia

' data-src=

Discover the Elegance and Comfort of MSC Virtuosa Balcony Cabin Tour – With Video

Santorini, with its mesmerizing sunsets, picturesque villages, and crystal-clear waters, is a dream destination for many travellers. One of the island’s most iconic spots is Oia, renowned for its charming white-washed buildings and stunning views. Here’s How to get from Santorini Cruise Port to Oia

While the cable car is a popular choice for reaching Fira, the island’s capital, it can get crowded, especially during peak tourist seasons. But fear not, there’s a delightful alternative; read along for our guide on how to get to Oia from the Fira cruise port by boat.

Table of Contents

Setting sail for oia from fira port.

santorini boat tour oia

Depending on how busy the port is when your cruise is on Santorini, you could face anywhere from a 15-minute to 70-minute wait to take the cable car up to the top of the island to get your iconic Santorini photos at Fira, which is the town where all the cruise ships dock.

Well, did you know there are actually two main towns on Santorini that offer those iconic mountainside views? If you are facing a long wait to get onto the cable car or don’t fancy risking the 660 stairs climb up to Fira, there is an alternative option.

On our second visit to Santorini by cruise, we decided to skip the cable car as it was reportedly a 70-minute wait. We discovered that it was possible to take a leisurely boat to the picturesque port of Ammoudi and then a short coach journey to Oia.

santorini boat tour oia

How to get to Oia from Fira by Boat

There is an office along the waterfront of Fira port, which has a large banner and signage offering local tours and excursions; at first glance, it may not be evident that it offers a boat to Oia as they seem to promote the Volcano and other tours more.

However, stepping inside, you can see a large wall banner offering the trip to Oia. There are multiple stages to this excursion, but for one fee of €30 per person, your ticket includes the boat to Ammoundi, the coach from Ammoundi to Oia, and then the coach from Oia back to Fira. One thing to note: the ticket for the cable car isn’t included for your return descent down the mountain at the end of your trip. In our case, Virgin Voyages included a complimentary ticket for the cable car, both up and down; the cable car costs €8 each way normally.

You can pay cash or via card for the boat ticket, and departure seems to be every 45 minutes, so it’s the luck of your timing whether you may have a wait or you can head straight onto the boat.

santorini boat tour oia

Taking the Boat to Ammoundi

The boat isn’t clearly marked, despite the office stating it would be; however, it is just along the port front, and there aren’t many passenger ships travelling from the port that aren’t part of the ship Tendering process, so look for the one ship that’s not in front of cruise line tent and show your ticket.

The journey is not only swift, taking around 15 minutes, but also provides a refreshing sea breeze and panoramic views of Santorini’s coastline. It’s the perfect way to take in the coastline of Santorini from a perspective you can’t get from the top. As your boat glides through the azure waters and heads towards the small port of Ammoundi, you’ll feel the anticipation of discovering the beauty that awaits in Oia.

santorini boat tour oia

Exploring Oia, Dining and Shopping

Upon arriving in Ammoundi, which is a beautiful port and worth exploring in its own right, with cafes and bars to visit, and considerably less busy than the port of Fira.

To head onwards to Oia, there is a short walk uphill of around 300 meters, leading you to the local bus stop. Using the same ticket we got for the boat, there is also an included bus from this carpark to the heart of Oia, which was a short 10-minute drive.

santorini boat tour oia

You are then free to explore the enchanting town of Oia at your own pace. Wander through the narrow alleys adorned with vibrant bougainvillaea, visit quaint shops offering local crafts, and indulge in delicious Greek cuisine at the charming tavernas.

One of the top things to do is visit the iconic Oia Castle, offering panoramic views of the Caldera and the Aegean Sea; we instead explore the nearby churches and boutiques. Oia feels a little more upmarket than Fira, but they both offer similar styles of cafe, bars, churches and shopping. The main benefit is getting away from the larger number of cruise passengers who will choose to keep to Fira.

santorini boat tour oia

Don’t miss the chance to savour delectable local cuisine at the seaside restaurants; we enjoyed a coffee and the most incredible Baklava at a cafe called Melenio Pastry , which had a rooftop seating area that offered us incredible views looking out to the sea, a picture-perfect dream that everyone craves when heading to Santorini.

santorini boat tour oia

Depending on your ship schedule and the time of the year, you may be lucky enough to be in port to capture the breathtaking sunset from one of the cliffside viewpoints, creating memories that will last a lifetime; we decided to head back to Fira as the sun was starting to make it decent, so the sky was only just starting to turn that gorgeous shade of orange.

Return Journey and Transportation Options

Make sure you make a note of the last bus for your cruise line; when you collect your ticket, they will clearly state what times the included bus back to Fira will be to ensure you have enough time to make your way back down to the port of Fira by either cable car or if you are brave enough, risk the stairs of Fira back down the mountainside to the port of Fira.

Buses run every hour on the hour; however, be aware there are also local buses you can take back to Fira. Your ticket doesn’t work on those, and you will be asked to pay for the local buses.

The bus will conveniently take you back to Fira town, so if you wanted, you could use this time to explore Fira, which also offers a wide range of cafes, bars and landmarks.

santorini boat tour oia

Reasons to take the boat to Oia

Opting to take the scenic boat journey from Fira Port to Oia not only offers a refreshing alternative to the cable car but also enhances your Santorini experience. With the freedom to explore Oia on foot and the ease of transportation back to Fira included, this option caters to both convenience and adventure seekers.

So, the next time you find the cable car queues bustling, consider setting sail for a memorable voyage, making your Santorini holiday truly magical.

What our customers are saying about us

From the mini bus transfer with Bus Leader, picking us up at the local bus stop from our hotel, the scenic drive to the Port of Athinios, the gorgeous Aphrodite sailing ship, the crew and their diligence in looking after all the passengers, their knowledge and skills in giving you the information when participating in the walk to the volcano and the swim in the thermal waters, the Greek dinner on board, finishing up with the traditional Zorba dance and the stunning views of the sunset over Oia. Recommended this particular trip to other guests staying at our hotel, Olympia, in Perivolos. Cannot recommend this trip highly enough. Fantastic experience and the highlight of our trip for mum and I.

This entire experience was absolutely fabulous! The boat, Ulysses, our guide was funny, energetic and knowledgeable. The hot springs, volcano , dinner and sunset were great. Perfect way to see and experience the caldera!!

Spectacular scenery, from the volcano, to the crater, to the sheer cliffs and views from below. Guide was great! We especially enjoyed when the sails were unfurled for the sunset viewing at the end and of course a Greek dance for all at the end!

This was the BEST tour I have ever been on! The tour guide was amazing, knew so much about the history of the Island and surrounding areas and the whole thing was so much fun! The weather was unfortunate for us meaning we had to bring raincoats and jumpers, but when the sun set it was magical. The dinner was also plentiful and yummy! Worth every penny. Please do this!!

Escape the crowds: how to navigate Santorini by superyacht

With whitewashed villages clinging to the cliffs 250-metres above sea level and a world-famous sunset, Santorini tends to be the image that pops into your head when you think of a Greek island. But those who have experienced Santorini will attest – it is vital to formulate a strategy to avoid the crowds. While it may have been on your bucket list for some time, you can assume that millions of other have had the same idea and will flock to the ancient villages in hope of capturing the fabled sunset.

There are, however, strategic ways to visit the best spots in Santorini without finding yourself among hordes of tourists. A fine choice for visiting superyachts, this is how to capture Santorini’s magic in privacy.

Should you wish to spend a night on the island, opt for a property that offers a sanctuary from the overcrowded streets, yet still sits in an optimal location with Santorini’s famous vistas...

Nobu Santorini

Set on the island’s northeast coast and dangling on the clifftops of Imerovigli, Nobu Santorini opened in the summer of 2023. Composed of charming whitewashed monolithic villas arranged around a spectacular infinity pool that seemingly falls away to the ocean 200-metres below, Nobu is a quiet sanctuary of Santorini that exudes the type of elegance you would expect of the illustrious Nobu Brand. The hotel’s restaurant has vowed to serve Nobu classics and, like much of the hotel, resides in a trendy open-air setting with dim glowy lighting and live lo-fi music. Each of the villas are carefully designed to instill a sense of place, with soft curvaceous walls, stone bathrooms and natural textures. nobuhotels.com

Santo Collection

If you have ever stayed in Santorini, the glistening Cycladic Island, famed for its icy-white villas, blue-domed churches, and mesmerising sunsets, you’ll know that seclusion is key. It’s no secret that the beauty of Santorini makes it one of the most popular Greek islands to visit, so hotel selection away from the masses is essential. This year, Santo Collection has helped with this conundrum with the opening of Santo Mine, a luxurious 37-suite hotel and two new villas, which can be combined to accommodate 16 guests. Located an 11-minute walk from Oia, the new adults-only property is in-keeping with the Santorini aesthetic, with whitewashed suites carved into the cliffs, earthy interiors, and direct views over the glittering Aegean Sea. santocollection.gr

Andronis Arcadia

Trickling down the hillside on the edge of the romantic town of Oia, in Santorini , Andronis Arcadia offers sublime sunset views from every one of its 53 sugar-cube suites. While tourists wielding selfie sticks line up on the cobbled streets of the town above for views over the steep slope of the caldera, you can recline by your private pool for uninterrupted sea views as the sun slowly dips beyond the horizon.

Having opened in 2019, its minimalist aesthetic, laid back vibe, vast central infinity pool and endlessly Instagrammable private plunge pools have made it an instant hit with the well-heeled millennials. The suites are simple but luxurious, with neutral tones, low-slung platform beds and locally sourced woods and artefacts. The icing on the cake for the hotel opening is its cavernous Evexia spa, which is one of the largest on the island.

The best anchorages in Santorini

For those who wish to enjoy the sunset without battling millions of others, there are several places to try…

The bay of Órmos Ammoúdi

If you're hoping to catch Santorini's world-famous sunset, this is how to get a front-row seat. The bay sits directly below Oia, and if you look closely, you'll see thousands of people battling to get a spot with cameras at the ready. Turn around, however, and you'll have uninterrupted views of the sunset in complete privacy.

An almost uninhabited island, Nea Kameni lies in Santorini’s archipelago caldera and is made up of a striking black lava rock. It is famously home to just one person, who settled here after painful unrequited love. The bay itself is actually a sulphurous hot spring which you can swim in and there are steep walking paths through Nea Kameni Volcanic Park that take you around active smoking craters.

One of Santorini’s most famous sights, Red Beach is just as spectacular as one would hope with its vivid red pebbles and cliffs, which pop against the blue lagoon. A good snorkelling spot, the beach has interesting rock formations and is awash with marine life. Located in the southern part of the island, Red Beach is near Akrotiri village and the spectacular Akrotiri Lighthouse, which can also be seen from the water.

Palia Kameni

Palia Kameni is another volcanic island within Santorini. The island was formed by a series of volcanic eruptions. One of the best things a couple can opt for is diving into the natural hot springs and taking a mud bath.
