Everyone should spend a week paddling in a canoe, if not every year, at least once in their life. There’s no better way to get to know someone than being stuck in the same boat for days on end, and it’s been the boat of choice for hunters and anglers for centuries. There are paddling routes all across the world, and many in your backyard. Some will challenge you as a paddler, while others can help you and your family relax.

After a few trips under your belt you may end up falling in love with canoe tripping. You’ll know it’s too late if you find that your belt has been replaced by an NRS cam strap.

This is not a definitive list. There are too many gorgeous places to paddle and not enough time, but these North American canoe trips are a good place to start.

A paddler drags a canoe through grass to the water in Upstate New York.

The Elements of a Great Canoe Trip

A canoe trip is flexible. You can float lazily down a river, chatting with your friends or you can suffer through a hellish portage in the snow for days on end. It can be whatever you want. I will say that a grueling portage helps to make a trip memorable. The same goes for tricky weather, exciting rapids, and killer fishing conditions. Oh, and bugs.

Tandem paddling and tough portages can bring you closer or make you start whacking each other with your paddle. Make sure your paddling crew works well together. Carry an extra paddle in each boat in case you break or lose your main paddle, and make sure everyone wears a life jacket. Explain the route carefully before you start so everyone knows what to expect.

Always make sure to have a warm, dry change of clothes when you get into camp. No matter how gnarly it gets on the water, a toasty pair of socks waiting for you at the end of the day can help you get through it. A big bag of trail mix (the kind with M&Ms!) in each boat helps too.

If you’re worried about navigating your route, or just want some help on the water, hire a guide or outfitter.

Two paddlers navigate a lake in Upstate New York, on the Northern Forest Canoe Trail.

1. Northern Forest Canoe Trail, New England

A group of friends and I paddled the first two sections of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail (NFCT) a few years back and I’ve been itching to go back to complete the rest. I’ve also paddled section 12, the famous Allagash River, in Maine. The beauty of the NFCT is that I can keep picking these trips off section by section, or choose to paddle all thirteen sections at once to cover the entire 740 mile route like an AT thru-hiker. The trail starts in Old Forge, NY and finishes in Fort Kent, Maine. The NFCT covers 23 rivers and streams, 59 lakes and ponds, and 65 portages (a little more than 70 miles) and is the longest inland water trail in the United States. This is as classic as canoe country paddling gets, with the trail following traditional Native American travel routes.

2. Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Minnesota

More classic canoe country, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness has over 1,200 miles of paddling routes. At 1 million acres in size, you can spend a month in the backcountry of northeastern Minnesota and still barely scratch the surface. There are thousands of lakes and streams and you can spend your nights at one of over 2,000 designated campsites. Bring smores, you’ll want to watch the stars all night long.

3. Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, Georgia

A canoe can be just as at home down in the swamp as in the North Woods. Paddle through the black swamp waters of Georgia’s Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge to watch colorful birds and curious alligators. A photographer friend, Chris Funk, has been telling me to paddle the Okefenokee for years. “It’s a place that is so wild; man tried to tame it and failed,” he says. “The beauty of that place burns deep in the hearts of the folks that visit those black waters.”

4. Buffalo National River, Arkansas

The standout character of my time on the Buffalo National River in the beautiful Ozark region of Arkansas was the smallmouth bass. Even the smallest bass I caught that week were feisty as hell and brilliantly colored. There are many route options for paddlers looking for a multi-day float, with a total of 132 river miles beginning in the town of Ponca. Head there for the fishing, but make sure to enjoy the tall bluffs on this scenic river.

5. Green River, Utah

If north country whitewater or alligator swamps aren’t your speed, paddle one of the best flatwater routes in the country on the Green River in Utah. Start in the town of Green River Utah and paddle 120 miles to the confluence of the Colorado River. Most people can complete the trip in 3-5 days, but make sure to plan time to hike the surrounding country. The giant rock formations of Labyrinth and Stillwater Canyons will keep you awestruck.

6. Tuolumne River, California

Designated a Wild & Scenic river in 1984, California’s Tuolumne River starts in the High Sierra mountains and runs for 62 miles before it enters the Stanislaus National Forest. Besides the gorgeous views, like lush meadows between glacially carved canyons, there is also a chance for serious paddlers to test their skill. Starting From Lumsden Bridge to Wards Ferry a series of tricky rapids run one after another for 18 miles. If you’d rather run it than portage it, this may be the route for you.

7. Noatak River, Alaska

On a list of the best canoe trips in North America, of course you have to include one within the largest undisturbed watershed on the continent: the Noatak River in Alaska. You have almost 400 miles of river to plan your route on, but if you’re going to paddle the whole thing (why not, right?) a good place to put in is Kotzebue. There’s also the option to split it up and come back again year after year. It is after all a clear, arctic river with serious fishing and great wildlife, like bear, sheep, caribou, and musk ox.

8. Wabakimi Provincial Park, Ontario

With over 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) of some of the best wilderness canoeing routes in the world, Wabakimi Provincial Park must be explored over a lifetime. You just have to keep going back. There’s plenty of action for whitewater paddlers, chances to explore the park’s long cultural history of Indigenous communities, and of course the fishing. Fly-in lodges put their clients on giant walleye and northern pike, but spending a week (or more) there in a canoe means you’ll have first dibs at all the best spots.

9. Nahanni River, Northwest Territories

Spend two weeks in the backcountry of Canada’s Northwest Territories on the classic Nahanni River. This river features Virginia Falls, a waterfall nearly twice the height of Niagara Falls. It also takes paddlers through some of Canada’s deepest river canyons, leads them past hot springs and other unique geological features. This river is so legendary that the United Nations declared the Nahanni River first World Heritage Site in 1978.

10. The Bowron Lakes Circuit, British Columbia

Paddle along the western slopes of the Cariboo Mountain Range in Bowron Lake Provincial Park. The Bowron Lake Canoe Circuit is world-renowned among paddlers, connecting 116 kilometers (72 miles) of lakes, waterways, and portages through the wilderness. You can spend 10 days paddling the whole circuit, or just paddle 2 to 4 days on the west side of the circuit.

Remember, sometimes the portages between each lake are the best part, at least they are later when you’re talking about them to your coworkers back in the real world.

The Ultimate Great Lakes Kayaking Adventure Itinerary

LAST UPDATED: 3/2/24 – Great Lakes Kayaking Adventure Itinerary

Summer is upon us in the Northern Hemisphere, and with summer comes my annual national parklands adventure. While I love to travel internationally, there are so many amazing places to visit at home in the United States that I like to take some time to explore these areas each year.

In case you missed it, last year I took an epic national parks road trip out to the western United States to visit some of the country’s most iconic parks. If you are interested in reading about that adventure, I have linked to my trip planning article below for you to read.

This year, I plan on switching things up a bit and taking a trip through the Great Lakes states to do some Great Lakes kayaking at two of the most iconic kayaking locations in North America.

Great Lakes Kayaking

When it comes to tourist destinations in the United States, the large cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas and the big national parks like Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon get most of the attention. However, the Great Lakes region of the United States has some absolutely fantastic destinations for outdoor adventure enthusiasts to explore.

In particular, there are some truly incredible Great Lakes kayaking opportunities to be had if you know the top destinations. A few years back, my wife and I traveled to the Apostle Islands in Northern Wisconsin to do some kayaking on Lake Superior.

Without a doubt, the Apostle Islands is one of the premier kayaking destinations in the Great Lakes region. This summer, I plan on visiting the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Mackinac Island, and Turnip Rock, which are three of the other iconic kayaking destinations in the Great Lakes States.

My Great Lakes Kayaking Trip Itinerary

Great Lakes Kayaking

If you follow my blog closely, you likely know how much I absolutely love outdoor adventure activities. Whether it is hiking, snowshoeing, kayaking, or climbing, I can’t get enough of it. One of my favorite activities to do in the American Great Lakes region is to kayak on the beautiful Great Lakes.

There is a seemingly endless number of beautiful coastlines on Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, and Lake Huron to explore. There are several beautiful spots that I have visited and photographed on land during my travels but have yet to make it back to and get out on the water.

That is why I have decided to take this Great Lakes kayaking trip and share my itinerary with you. Perhaps it will inspire you to get out and visit this amazing part of the United States and check out some of these fantastic kayaking destinations.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Great Lakes Kayaking at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

The first stop on my Great Lakes kayaking adventure will be to the incredible Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Located on the shores of Lake Superior, Pictured Rocks is one of the most incredible pieces of shoreline in the United States.

The breathtakingly beautiful painted cliffs, sea caves, and natural rock formations that are found along this stretch of coastline are unreal. I have visited Pictured Rocks several times during my travels, but I have yet to get out on the water and kayak this stretch of coastline. That will change on this trip, as I plan to spend a full day exploring this incredible national coastline.

There are Great Kayaking Tours Available

For this trip, I decided to book a tour with Pictured Rocks Kayaking as I really like the fact that they take you by boat to the start of the pretty coastline and then launch the kayaks from the boat. Since I will be doing quite a bit of kayaking on this trip, saving my arms by avoiding the kayaking miles to get to the amazing part of the coastline was an attractive option.

However, I was also very intrigued by the kayaking tours offered by Paddling Michigan . They have several sunrise and sunset kayak tours that look incredible, as well as an 8-hour kayaking and hiking tour that looks like it would be a lot of fun.

If you are looking to book a kayaking tour at Pictured Rocks, I would suggest starting with these two well-known tour providers. If you would like an overview of what you can see while kayaking at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, I have included a map of the typical kayaking tour for you to review below.

Great Lakes Kayaking on Mackinac Island

Great Lakes Kayaking - Mackinac Island

The next stop on my Great Lakes kayaking adventure is an area that I have spent quite a bit of time at since I was a child. When I was young, my family would take road trips around Lake Superior and a stop at Mackinaw Island was always on the itinerary.

While I have explored almost every inch of the island itself, I have yet to get out on the water in a kayak while visiting the island. Finally, I hope to do that on this trip and I cannot wait. There are so many incredible sights to explore along the coast of Mackinac Island, including the natural arch, the Little Round Island lighthouse, and many other beautiful spots.

If you are interested in learning more about Mackinac Island, I have included a link to my Ultimate Mackinac Island Visitor Guide for you to review below. For those who are interested in kayaking while there, I would strongly suggest that you check out the incredible tours available with Great Turtle Kayak Tours . They have a wide variety of tours that will meet the needs of kayakers of all experience levels.

Turnip Rock

Great Lakes Kayaking Turnip Rock

The final stop on my Great Lakes kayaking adventure will be to one of the most infamous, yet more difficult to reach, kayaking destinations in the American Great Lakes region. Few landmarks along the shores of any of the Great Lakes are as beautiful or as mystifying as Turnip Rock. Located on the shores of Lake Huron near Port Austin, Michigan, Turnip Rock is an incredible sea stack that sits in the shallow waters, just offshore.

You Can Only Access Turnip Rock from the Water

Unlike many of the incredible sea caves and sea stacks that can be found elsewhere in the Great Lakes, the shoreline near Turnip Rock isn’t located on public lands. Instead, it sits off the coast of a private gated community, which makes seeing and photographing this epic sea stack impossible for most people to do by land.

For most visitors, the only way to get up close to Turnip Rock and photograph it is by getting in the water and kayaking to it. It’s not a difficult paddle when weather conditions are favorable, and shops in Port Austin like Port Austin Kayak rent out single and double kayaks, as well as stand-up paddle boards.

It’s a roughly 7-mile kayak from Port Austin to Turnip Rock and takes most people roughly 4 hours to get there and back. If you are interested in kayaking to Turnip Rock on your own Great Lakes kayak adventure, I would strongly recommend reserving your kayak rental well in advance as it does get busy during the summer months. Believe me, it is an experience you will remember.

7 Enchanting Places to Paddle on Lake Superior

great lakes canoe trip

It’s in the name. Lake Superior. The greatest of the Great Lakes is a paddling destination unlike any other. Superior is the world’s largest lake by area, containing 10 percent of the planet’s surface freshwater. Its Canadian coastline, sprawling some 750 km across Northern Ontario, is also one of the least developed freshwater coasts you’ll find anywhere on Earth. Even better, the Lake Superior region’s experienced outfitters and established paddling routes make it simple for kayakers and canoeists to plan the trip of a lifetime.

We highly recommend booking a guided trip to enjoy these routes safely. Lake Superior remains cold all summer, and wind and waves can develop quickly, making travel impossible. Guided trips are also a great way to make a meaningful connection with the area by learning more about Lake Superior’s fascinating natural and cultural history.

Lake Superior Provincial Park

This easily accessible provincial park offers a spectacular microcosm of Lake Superior’s grandeur, with white-sand beaches, emerald waters, mossy forests, and ancient Indigenous pictographs rewarding adventurous paddlers. Lake Superior Provincial Park offers some of the most varied shoreline geology you’ll find anywhere, ranging from fine-sand beaches to technicolor cobbles and dramatic, pink granite cliffs.

Kayakers and experienced open-water canoeists can enjoy short tours from numerous access points along Trans-Canada Highway, or embark on a multi-day trip exploring the Park’s 105-km coastline end-to-end.

  • Book a Guided Sea Kayak Trip with Naturally Superior Adventures; their all-inclusive Spirit of Superior Weekly Escape offers five days of wilderness camping and paddling.
  • Reserve a Campsite at Lake Superior Provincial Park’s Agawa Bay or Rabbit Blanket Lake campgrounds. Both camping areas accommodate vehicles, tents, and RVs, with beachfront sites available.
  • Don’t Miss taking a hike on one of the park’s 11 trails, ranging from easy one-hour wetland rambles to demanding all-day tours that visit cascading falls and breathtaking lookouts.

Rossport Islands

This scenic archipelago of islands lies just offshore from the quaint community of Rossport and offers kayakers and canoeists a friendly glimpse of Lake Superior’s north shore. Novices can enjoy a day trip among the sheltered passages of the inner islands, while more experienced paddlers can venture on overnight trips to the outer islands. Highlights include nearly guaranteed bald eagle sightings, peaceful backcountry campsites, and the historic lighthouse at Battle Island.

  • Book a Guided Sea Kayak Trip with Such A Nice Day (SAND); they offer beginner-friendly half-day tours and day trips among the islands.
  • Rent Kayaks and Canoes on the waterfront in Rossport at Superior Outfitters .
  • Reserve an Overnight Stay at the bright and spacious Serendipity Gardens Guest House , or stay in a room overlooking the archipelago at The Willows Inn Bed & Breakfast .
  • Enjoy Fine Dining while savoring harbour views and lake breezes from the outdoor patio at Serendipity Gardens Café .
  • Don’t Miss a visit to Nicol Island to browse the Superior-inspired, handmade stoneware at Island Pottery .

Pukaskwa National Park

Stunning scenery and sheer isolation put the wilderness coastline of Pukaskwa National Park at the top of many sea kayakers’ bucket lists. The park’s pristine 90-km coastline offers experienced paddlers an unforgettable string of sublime campsites on sand and cobble beaches overlooking aquamarine waters. Add in cascading rivers with paddle-to waterfalls and the potential to see wildlife such as moose, black bears, and bald eagles, and it’s little wonder this is Superior’s premier sea kayaking destination.

Many paddlers choose to combine this route with the adjoining Superior Highlands Conservation Reserve to make a 190-km, 10- to 14-day sea kayak expedition. Boat transfers are also available to the remote south end of Pukaskwa National Park for paddlers with less time.

  • Book a Guided Sea Kayak Trip with Naturally Superior Adventures; their all-inclusive Pukaskwa Wilderness Coast offers 10 days of wilderness camping and paddling.
  • Reserve an Overnight Stay at Pic River Guest Suite , a cheerful self-catering suite on the edge of Pukaskwa National Park in the First Nation community of Pic River.
  • Rent Canoes & SUPs at Hattie Cove Visitor Centre in Pukaskwa National Park , perfect for an easy half-day exploration of the cove and adjacent Pulpwood Harbour.
  • Book a Glamping Stay in a Parks Canada oTENTik tent cabin at Hattie Cove.

Slate Islands

The Slate Islands archipelago offers paddlers a sheltered oasis in the heart of the mighty lake. Lying more than 10 km offshore from the town of Terrace Bay, this compact cluster of islands is renowned for its bizarre geology, superb lake trout fishing (in June and July) and one of the most southerly populations of woodland caribou found anywhere.

Thought to have formed some 450 million years ago from a massive meteorite impact, the islands’ circular arrangement creates a protected inner harbour with peaceful backcountry camping. When the lake is calm, adventurous paddlers can venture around the exposed south coast of Patterson Island to view fascinating rock formations, remote beaches and a spectacularly situated lighthouse. Boat shuttles make the Slate Islands surprisingly accessible from Terrace Bay.

  • Book a Guided Sea Kayak Trip with Such A Nice Day (SAND) ; their adventurous six-day tour includes a paddle crossing to and from the islands. Novice kayakers can opt for Naturally Superior Adventures’ five-day Slate Islands trip, which includes boat shuttles.
  • Charter a Boat Shuttle to the Slate Islands with Evan’s Fishing Edge , ideal for self-guided groups of up to four paddlers (includes transportation of kayaks or canoes).
  • Reserve an Overnight Stay and settle into a pre- or post-trip meal at Drifters Motel & Restaurant in Terrace Bay. For the ultimate treat, book the Jacuzzi Lighthouse suite.
  • Don’t Miss viewing the spectacular Aguasabon Falls & Gorge and taking a stroll along the Casque Isles Trail in Terrace Bay.

Denison Falls

Few Lake Superior paddling routes can rival the journey to Denison Falls for beauty, solitude, and accessibility. This four- to five-day trip includes a mixture of stunning sand beaches and rocky headlands along a wonderful wilderness coastline, with many landing options making it suitable for open canoeists and novice kayakers alike. The highlight of the trip is standing in a cloud of mist emanating from jaw-dropping Denison Falls, a 100-foot cataract hidden at the end of a two-hour hike inland.

  • Book a Guided Sea Kayak Trip with Naturally Superior Adventures; their all-inclusive Sea Kayak Denison Falls offers five days of wilderness camping and paddling.
  • Rentals and Trip Planning assistance are available from Naturally Superior Adventures .

Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area

The world’s largest freshwater marine park stretches for 125 km between Lake Superior’s iconic Sleeping Giant and the sleepy village of Rossport, containing hundreds of wilderness islands and a lifetime of exploration for intrepid paddlers. This island-to-island route offers challenging open water crossings and a varied coastline of craggy cliffs and inviting cobble beaches. Highlights include visits to historic lighthouses, remote agate beaches and a smattering of rustic saunas tucked in the Boreal forest, a testament to the Finnish heritage of this region.

  • Book a Guided Sea Kayak Trip — Naturally Superior Adventures offers an all-inclusive nine -day trip , or choose an eight-day skills-focused trip with Such A Nice Day.
  • Don’t Miss the guided tour of Porphyry Island Lighthouse , and cap it off with a steamy lakeside sauna and bracing dip. Staying in the restored lighthouse keeper’s residence is a great way to start or finish your paddling trip.

Michipicoten Bay

Many first-time Lake Superior paddlers have dipped their toes in the waters at the mouth of the Michipicoten River, home to the region’s premier paddling centre, Naturally Superior Adventures . When the lake is calm, novice paddlers can enjoy a rewarding day trip to beautiful Driftwood and Sandy beaches, or venture up the Michipicoten River to view thundering waterfalls when Superior is too rough to paddle.

  • Book a Guided Day Tour with Naturally Superior Adventures; canoe and kayak tours include basic instruction and packed lunch.
  • Rent Kayaks, Canoes & SUPs from Naturally Superior Adventures; lessons are also available.
  • Reserve an Overnight Stay at Rock Island Lodge ; choose from cozy lakeside rooms, beachfront glamping in a unique geodesic dome, or peaceful beach camping.

The Great Lakes: A Little Slice of the Sea

Deep in the heart of North America, surrounded by forest and field, there is an ocean. A vast inland sea containing nearly a quarter of the world's fresh water — enough to flood the lower 48 states to a depth of almost ten feet — the Great Lakes contain upwards of 35,000 islands, and their 10,000 miles of shore rival that of the US ocean coastlines.

Tips for Going Canoeing and Kayaking

Plan now which park or location to visit – A successful trip often starts with good planning. Use our list to choose which parks or locations have the activities and amenities that will be the most enjoyable for your family. You may want to make your own bucket list of locations to visit this year and have fun checking them off as you go.

Set realistic expectations with your kids – Water activities are a lot of fun, but they can make kids a bit nervous especially if it’s their first time. Consider discussing what to expect and water safety in advance then reassure them that the experience can be a lot of fun even if things don’t go exactly as planned.

Check the forecast before you go – The weather can change quickly and locations will close activities if the water is potentially unsafe. Be sure to call or check their website before heading out, especially if the weather forecast doesn't look promising.

Protect your kids (and yourself!) from the sun – Lakes and rivers generally offer limited shade, so be sure to load up with sunscreen, reapply after getting very wet, and consider wearing a hat to keep the sun off your face.

Prepare for the weather (and recent weather) – Depending on the time you choose to go and the planned length of your visit, consider wearing layers so everyone is comfortable even in the cooler morning or evening hours. You may even want to bring a change of clothes for the drive home.

Pack your own snacks – Pack plenty of drinks and snacks. It can be part of the fun to pack a lunch or cooler of your favorites. If you'd prefer to purchase food, check to see if the park or location offers a concession stand and consider calling ahead to find out the type of concessions available.

Be sure to bring some cash money – Some locations offer additional activities like paddle boats and mini-golf for a small fee, so be sure to bring some cash money in case they don't accept credit cards.

Remember your camera – Water adventures are often miles of amazing beauty. Make sure your phone is charged and protected with a waterproof case to capture the natural beauty of the lake or river and the beautiful photo opportunities they provide.

I go kayaking and canoeing in Stark Co. at the Bolivar Canoe Rental. Their sign-in area is just across the Tuscarawas Co. border at I-77 but the section of river is in Stark Co. it’s A wilderness part of the river. I’ve never seen a house from the river. Just trees and wildlife (4 legged & winged kind). Fishing is great too.

4 Great Lake kayaking locations for beginners

Published august 15, 2019.

Kayaking across the clear blue waters of the Great Lakes is a remarkable experience. Not only is it a fun and rewarding way to get in some exercise, but it also connects us to the water.

The Great Lakes watershed is bursting with astoundingly beautiful kayak routes, but if you’re a beginner, you might feel a bit overwhelmed by all of the choices. We’ve compiled a list of the 4 best beginner paddles in the region so you can get out and enjoy all that the Great Lakes have to offer!

The Toronto Islands

You don’t have to venture far from Canada’s biggest city to find easy paddling. The Toronto Islands are the perfect location for beginners because of their inland waterways, which are protected from the busy and restless waters of Lake Ontario. Pick up a rental from The Boat House on Centre Island and enjoy a light paddle along the islands’ calm lagoons.

Georgian Bay, near Parry Sound

Georgian Bay has some of the best kayaking in all of Canada. With over 30,000 islands, sheltered bays, and ancient rocks to explore, the area is very popular among paddlers for its stunning and varied scenery. Near Parry Sound, the White Squall Paddling Centre is well-equipped to help you explore the beautiful scenery with guided single and multi-day tours for those with little to no experience!

Bruce Peninsula National Park

Another easy paddling spot on the beautiful Lake Huron is the picturesque Bruce Peninsula National Park . The park is wildly popular for its turquoise blue waters, dramatic cliffs and multitude of activities, including various kayaking routes for all levels of experience. The western point of the park offers idyllic waters for lazy paddling, and rental stores like Thorncrest Outfitters and G+S Watersports where you can pick up equipment and get some guidance on paddling.

The Thousand Islands

The dynamic and historic channels of the St. Lawrence River offer amazing paddling opportunities for beginners around the Thousand Islands National Park and beyond. Cruise by centuries-old mansions, lighthouses, and the ancient Canadian Shield, while observing the abundance of local wildlife including birds of prey, heron, and turtles. Several outfitters can help get you set up with a guided or self-guided tour, such as the 1000 Islands Kayaking Co. , and Misty Isles Lodge .

15 Michigan Kayaking Spots on the Lower Peninsula

By: Author Rob Taylor

Posted on Published: April 20, 2022  - Last updated: March 26, 2024

15 Michigan Kayaking Spots on the Lower Peninsula

Although known for its prime location right in the middle of four Great Lakes, kayaking on Michigan’s Lower Peninsula isn’t just sea kayaking in open water. Some of the best paddling in the state can be found throughout its extensive systems of rivers and inland lakes. You’ll find it’s very different from kayaking Michigan’s Upper Peninsula . I love this area!

Among these spots, Michigan has some of the most unique, interesting and beautiful paddling features to tackle in the country. Float atop the waves and paddle in awe as you make your way past Lake Superior’s super cool geological structures, through the winding canals of Detroit’s cityscape, down the waves of a challenging whitewater park or simply a leisurely float down a calm flowing river (of which there are plenty).

The countless inland lakes and river systems, combined with over 3,200 miles of freshwater coastline provides an incredible supply of paddling opportunities for all experience levels. Here are some of the top launch spots in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula for family-friendly day-trips, extensive multi-day adventures, or exciting whitewater runs.

Kayaking on Michigan's Lower Peninsula is a beautiful way to see the state. From natural areas on Lake Huron to a different way to see Detroit, these kayaking spots and tours are perfect for summer travel.

Best Lower Peninsula Day Trips

Spending time in the Midwest in summer and fall is absolutely beautiful. Very similar to kayaking around Door County and Green Bay, Wisconsin , paddling in Michigan gives you the Great Lakes and hidden inland gems.

Au Sable River (Difficulty: Beginner)

One of Michigan’s calmer and more pristine river paddling experiences can be found on the relaxing Au Sable River. Kayakers can expect a peaceful day on the water immersed in an amazing natural environment complete with towering pine trees and winding river bends. And with lots of camping options available, this tranquil waterway can also be stretched into an easy multi-day trip as well.

Grand River/ Grand Rapids (Difficulty: Beginner)

Running right through the heart of downtown Grand Rapids, the Grand River is an excellent way for paddlers of any experience level to discover the beauty of the city and the surrounding wilderness. While paddling through the longest river in the state, take advantage of the popular fishing scene and bring your rod for the chance to catch salmon, steelhead, walleye, and many more species that call the Grand River home.

Turnip Rock (Difficulty: Beginner)

Considered to be one of America’s most incredible natural rock formations, the vegetable-shaped island has become a popular attraction for kayakers throughout the Lower Peninsula’s Northern tip. Since the natural wonder can only be seen from the water, a easy 4-hour kayak trip along the beautiful Port Austin shoreline is well worth the trip and easily navigable for all experience levels.

Kayaking-at-Turnip-Rock-Lake-Huron-Michigan

Crystal Lake (Difficulty: Beginner)

Known for its crystal clear waters and stunning shades of blue, Crystal Lake is among the best spots for a fun and relaxing day on the water surrounded by beautiful waters and pristine wilderness. Also, the 21-mile sandy beach along the shoreline is an excellent place for picnics and swim breaks throughout the day.

Kayaking-on-Crystal-Lake-Lower-Peninsula-Michigan

Detroit Canals (Difficulty: Beginner)

Sometimes called the “Venice of Detroit”, the dense system of Detroit’s canals take paddlers through some of the best sights the suburban landscape has to offer. Kayakers can look forward to exploring various waterside neighborhoods mixed in with scenes of overgrown flora. And for those looking to explore the area without chance of getting lost, there are some excellent tour operators offering a guided tour throughout the canals that we have listed below.

Kayaking outside of Detroit Michigan

Lower Platte River (Difficulty: Beginner)

This short, beginner-friendly float is perfect for kayakers looking for a fun, simple, and rewarding afternoon on the water. With beautiful sand dunes and a diverse population of blue heron, ducks and deer, the slow moving waters of the Lower Platte will provide non-stop scenery throughout the journey.

Seven Lakes State Park (Difficulty: Beginner)

With six lakes and over 230 acres of water to discover, the kayaking found in Seven Lakes State Park is some of the most tranquil paddling in the state. As the majority of the lakes are often entirely free of boat traffic, you’re likely to have any one of the lakes to yourself as you explore the calm bays and shaded shorelines during a relaxing afternoon adventure. SUP Friendly Paddling

Straits of Mackinac (Difficulty: Intermediate)

Built as a bridge connecting the Lower Peninsula with their northern neighbors, the Mackinac Bridge and the surrounding straits provide an interesting day-trip. Paddling under the bridge offers a unique view of the waterway that splits Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. However, this trip should only be attempted by those with some sea kayaking experience as unpredictable waves and freighter wakes can be challenging for beginners.

Lower Peninsula’s Best Multi-Day Adventures

Like if you’ve been kayaking in the Adirondacks , kayaking Michigan’s Lower Peninsula offers a fair number of paddling trails and multi-day kayak trips you can plan. Whether you choose to camp with your watercraft or just do portions of the Michigan paddling trails, you’ll love the scenery and wildlife.

Chain of Lakes Water Trail- Lower Chain Route (Difficulty: Intermediate- Advanced)

The infamous Chain of Lakes Water Trail consists of over 100 miles of paddling through 12 lakes and various interconnected rivers. However, for those looking to experience the best section of this lengthy paddling trail, we recommend a trip down the 30 mile Lower Chain Route. This intermediate-advanced route runs through five lakes and features fast moving sections of river, an open water crossing, and periods of high waves.

Grand River Heritage Water Trail (Difficulty: Beginner)

Running from Grand Rapids all the way to Lake Michigan, Grand River’s 41-mile water trail reveals some of the best scenery that Michigan’s longest river has to offer. And with an average speed of 3 miles per hour, the river is an ideal route to explore for all experience levels.

Huron River Water Trail (Difficulty: Intermediate- Advanced)

One of the longer excursions on this list, the Huron River Water Trail consists of 104 miles of waterway and runs through Ann Arbor all the way to the open waters of Lake Erie. But this also isn’t your average calm river paddling like most of the Michigan rivers. The entire route features a variety of paddling challenges including alternating stretches of rapids and placid waters.

Inland Waterway (Difficulty: Beginner)

Located in the northern tip of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, the 40-mile long Inland Waterway Trail is a popular route for kayakers looking for a historic trip running through a variety of different rivers, and lakes. From Petoskey to Lake Huron, paddlers will experience the magnificence of seven state parks as well as some unique rivers. Overall, the trail is without rapids, portages, and few motorized vessels making for a calm trip great for beginners looking for a longer adventure.

Sleeping Bear Dunes (Difficulty: Beginner)

With countless inland lakes, rivers, and Lake Michigan paddling opportunities, the area of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore can keep kayakers busy for days. One of the most impressive sights is the 400-foot high bluffs along the stretch of Lake Michigan’s shoreline that will awe and maze paddlers who are used to the flat geography of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula.

Lower Peninsula’s Rapids and Whitewater Runs

Even though everything thus far seems rather mellow, even with the more difficult paddles, the Lower Peninsula of Michigan has some awesome whitewater challenges too. These we recommend you do with a guide, and remember that high spring waters can be intense!

Upper Platte River (Difficulty: Intermediate)

Both longer and more challenging than the Lower Platte River, this 3-4 hour run contains fast moving waters with sharp turns, mild rapids, and various obstacles of fallen branches to maneuver. Although paddlers won’t experience the intensity of whitewater in this run, the fast moving currents still make for a fun and exciting challenge.

Bear River Whitewater Park (Difficulty: Advanced)

This spectacular Class 3 run is guaranteed to excite paddlers joining the many travellers from across the country visiting the Bear River Whitewater Park. The park offers various exciting challenges including roll overs, ledges, and tight squeezes that will make you forget that you’re in the heart of downtown Petoskey.

Sturgeon River (Difficulty: Advanced)

Sturgeon River contains the fastest moving water in the Lower Peninsula and features a wide range of rapids all the way up to Class 3. The run should only be attempted by experienced paddlers as the current is extremely fast and requires strong paddling along with quick decision making. Experienced kayakers will find Sturgeon River to be a fun and exciting trip.

Paddling Tours on Michigan’s Lower Peninsula

I love doing kayaking or paddling tours in general, especially when I’m in a new place. As you look at different Michigan kayaking tours and rentals, keep in mind that things operate seasonally so plan your travel accordingly. If you want to paddle in the winter, come visit us in Florida to do the 10,000 Islands in the Everglades , Tarpon Bay on the Gulf Coast or Silver Springs State Park .

Historic Detroit Canal Tour

For those looking to experience the interesting perspectives of Detroit’s canal system with the supervision and guidance of an experienced guide, this group tour is a great way to explore the city. Knowledgeable guides also inform on all of the area’s fascinating history. The canals are really unique .

Guided Kayak Tours at Sleeping Bear Dunes

Sleeping Bear Dunes from the water should be experienced by everyone, regardless of paddling experience. Offering professional guides, this is a rewarding trip filled with stunning scenery within the National Park System. Your guide will stay with you every step of the way to monitor your paddling on the open Lake Michigan waters and to take lots of amazing pictures of you and the bluffs.

Great Lakes Paddlers

Thinking about making Michigan your new go-to kayaking base? Consider joining the South-Eastern Michigan paddling community of Great Lakes Paddlers. In addition to monthly meetings of like-minded kayaking enthusiasts, the group plans roughly one paddling excursion a month to one of the state’s best paddling spots. Open to all experience levels, Great Lakes Paddlers is full of paddlers looking to promote Michigan kayaking and explore the best regions of the Lower Peninsula.

Weather and When to Visit

Due to cold temperatures, freezing waters, and harsh winters, the summer is usually the best season to venture out into Michigan for paddling trips. For most, the season lasts from April to September. Brave paddlers will continue on some of the unfrozen waterways until the late fall to experience the beauty of the changing colors, but this should not be attempted by inexperienced or unprepared kayakers as cold waters and unpredictable weather patterns create added risk. Even in peak season, kayakers should check an up-to-date weather forecast before every expedition.

The almost overwhelming amount of open water, river, and inland lake kayaking opportunities are waiting for you and your paddle. We’ve got you covered with this list of the best spots in the state, but you’ll quickly realize that the Michigan paddling scene has more to offer than what initially meets the eye. This is just a taste of the buffet.

Kayaking on Michigan's Lower Peninsula is a beautiful way to see the state. From natural areas on Lake Huron to a different way to see Detroit, these kayaking spots and tours are perfect for summer travel.

WiseYatra’s communication prior to and during the trip was great! The overall accommodations were good and centrally located… a big plus! The tours and sightseeing were a good mix of city and nature. The historical information and fun facts were well appreciated!! I would highly recommend adding the Montreal Botanical Garden in the sightseeing schedule. It is one of the most beautiful and interesting this time of the year! Airport pick up could be a little smoother. If it is someone new to travel in Canada, I would highly recommend having the pickup person inside the airport, at the international arrival gate, with their name easily readable on a sign. This will help to put people at ease and off to a good start of a beautiful vacation.

I had many firsts in this trip, first time canoeing, staying in cabin with strangers, first time in Algonquin, seeing the night sky. We had the A-team for sure, Nicolene, Baris and Reese (I hope I did not mess the spellings, my apology)it would not have been a great experience without you. Forever grateful.

8 U.S. Canoe Trips That'll Transport You Into the American Wild

Paddle through these waters for wildlife sightings, stunning scenery, and more.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

great lakes canoe trip

Editor’s Note: Travel might be complicated right now, but use our inspirational trip ideas to plan ahead for your next bucket list adventure.

You don’t have to strap on a giant backpack or hike 10 miles to get out into the wilderness — finding solitude can be as easy as loading up a canoe, pushing off, and dropping a line in the water. On a canoe trip, you need not worry about squeezing past others on a narrow trail or lugging around liters of water — everything you need is right in the boat with you.

These canoe trips take you from above the Alaskan Arctic Circle to the swamps of Georgia and are guaranteed to provide a much-needed reset (with a side of adventure). Plus, they’re all in the U.S., making it easy to find a nearby route that suits your style, whether it be braving rapids and overcoming grueling portages or sitting back with a line in the water and a beer in your hand.

1. Salmon River, Idaho

Also known as The River of No Return, the Salmon River takes boaters through 46 miles of recreational river trail, before reaching the 79-mile section of designated “wild” river. Canoers looking to take on the full 46-mile recreational route can put in at North Fork and take out at Corn Creek — a journey with tall canyon walls and some of the oldest known rocks in the state — or apply for a permit to venture into the “wild” section of the Salmon River.

2. Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Minnesota

For a paddle that’s just as beautiful as it is remote, it’s hard to top the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northeast Minnesota. The wilderness area, which is composed of 1,500 miles of canoe routes over 19,000 acres and 1,100 bodies of water, is accessible primarily by canoe. Here in the deep north, boaters are rewarded with scenery that’s still wild and unparalleled solitude.

3. Northern Forest Canoe Trail, New York to Maine

This 740-mile trail starts in New York and ends in Maine, passing through Vermont, Quebec, and New Hampshire along the way. While there’s nothing like the satisfaction that comes from completing the entire stretch, you can take your pick of the route’s 23 rivers and streams, 59 ponds and lakes, and 65 portages to create your own shortened itinerary — whether it be a day trip or a long weekend excursion .

4. Noatak River, Alaska

If true isolation is at the top of your list, it doesn’t get much more remote than the Noatak River . Located above the Arctic Circle, this river route passes through a glacial valley, alpine tundra, deep canyons, and open plains. As you float this easy to moderate river, you can drop in a line or keep an eye out for Alaskan wildlife , including grizzly bears, caribou, and sheep.

5. Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, Georgia

If the cooler weather up north doesn’t sound appealing, consider a trip to Georgia, home of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge . Heavily forested cypress swamps and “swamp prairies” offer two different takes on watery terrain that lure canoers looking for a multiday excursion in the South’s lush wilderness.

6. Green River, Utah

Utah’s Green River is a great choice if you’re a newbie to the canoeing world, or if you’ll be traveling with small children. The river is wide and mellow, with plenty of wildlife and scenery. You can drop in at Green River State Park and take out at Ruby Ranch two days later, or float all the way to the confluence of the Green and Colorado Rivers.

7. Buffalo National River, Arkansas

The beautiful Buffalo River passes through the Ozark Mountains and traverses alongside giant bluffs as it runs through quiet pools and tumbling rapids on its way to the White River. Once you reach the confluence, make sure to dip a toe to feel the distinction between the typically cooler White River and the warmer Buffalo waters. This trip can be as short as an afternoon paddle or as long as a multiday journey on the Buffalo River’s 153 miles — either way, you’ll want to keep your fishing gear on hand for the river’s renowned smallmouth bass fishing.

8. Tuolumne River, California

Thrill seekers will find their match on the Tuolumne River , which runs through deep gorges and forests on its way from the high Sierra Nevadas to the Central Valley. Along the way, you’ll be treated to wildlife sightings and excellent trout fishing as you navigate your way around Class IV rapids. Although the Tuolumne put-in is near Yosemite, the 149-mile body of water doesn’t have too much boating traffic, thanks to regulations on the number of trips permitted to launch each day.

Where to Sea Kayak on Lake Superior

kayaker on lake superior

Endless water on Superior (photo courtesy of Ryan B.)

7 -minute read

The Great Lakes hold 84% of North America’s fresh surface water and has around 10,000 miles of shoreline (16,000 km). That makes these five lakes a world-class inland sea kayaking destination.

Lake Superior is the largest of all the Great Lakes. In fact, Superior holds half of the water that’s in them. It’s the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area. Other than its size, the lake is well known for its water clarity and gorgeous shoreline. All the Great Lakes deserve our respect, but especially Lake Superior. If you’re new to sea kayaking we highly recommend you go through a licensed outfitter for a guided tour. Their guides will know the lake, have the proper gear and know how to keep you safe out there.

Superior demands extra safety considerations because of its size, rugged shoreline, changeable weather, potential for rough seas and water temperature. Hypothermia is always a potential danger even in the hot summer months.

If you don't have the proper equipment to kayak safely—specifically a sea kayak with spray skirt (NOT a recreational kayak) and wet suit or dry suit— as well as big water experience, you'll have the best and safest experience with a qualified guide from one of the many outfitters we list here.

Outfitters will include all the extra gear items along with your kayak rental like life jackets, bilge pump, a weather radio (and a current marine forecast) and first aid kits. These local guides also know the best places and ways to make open water crossings, the best routes, and where the coolest sea caves, sea stacks and rock formations are. Three US states and one Canadian province border Lake Superior. All of them have several reputable outfitters you can choose from:

Wisconsin Sea Kayak Outfitters

We’ll start in our home state of Wisconsin, where Lake Superior is just a couple of hours north of our headquarters in Osceola. The undisputed attraction here is the Apostle Islands sea caves along Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, as well as historic lighthouses and more than 20 islands to explore.

Superior's south shore is mostly made of softer rock like sandstone. That accounts for the abundance of sea caves carved by the lake's big waves, as well as its numerous sand beaches. Adventure Vacations (LaPointe, WI) operates half-day sea kayak tours from Madeline Island, the largest of the Apostle Islands. The Island has its own sea caves and cliffs to make for a wonderful few hours of paddling. Apostle Islands Kayak Tours (Bayfield, WI) highlights their tours that go to more protected and less popular destinations in the area. They offer a couple of beginner-level tours in areas where small waves are the norm but you still get sea caves and even a 1910 shipwreck.

Lost Creek Adventures (Cornucopia, WI) offers half-day and full day sea kayak tours all around the Apostle Islands, as well as overnight kayak camping trips. One of their unique tours is a kayak/snorkeling combo at a shipwreck site. Trek & Trail (Bayfield, WI) offers Apostle Islands and sea cave tours from half-day to full-day to multi-day trips of 2-7 days. Their most advanced trip is the 6-day Devil’s Island Rendezvous. Whitecap Kayak (Washburn, WI) takes their guests to Wisconsin’s sea caves and Apostle Islands for half-day and day trips. They also offer several multi-day camping expeditions, both Apostle Islands and along Michigan’s Upper Peninsula coast.

Minnesota Sea Kayak Outfitters

The Minnesota stretch of Lake Superior is known to Minnesotans as the North Shore. It has some spectacular features including 300-foot cliffs, the famous Split Rock Lighthouse and several state parks with their waterfalls.

Superior's north shore is mostly hard rock like basalt, so any beaches consist of pebble-to-cobblestone-size rounded rocks. Day Tripper of Duluth (Duluth, MN) offers 2 and 4-hour kayak trips to nearby Splitrock State Park with its famous lighthouse, and in and around the Duluth Harbor. They even offer an iceberg tour when conditions are just right.

Positive Energy Outdoors (Duluth, MN) offers half-day kayak tours to Split Rock State Park and its lighthouse. The Burlington Bay tour takes you through areas of active shipping, where you’ll be able to see the 1,000-foot iron ore ships going in and out.

Sawtooth Outfitters (Tofte, MN) offers kayak tours that explore North Shore features like the Temperance River area and the Palisade Head high cliffs and sea caves. Half-day and full-day trips are available.   Stone Harbor Wilderness Supply (Grand Marais, MN) offers half-day tours in and around the Grand Marais area. They also offer a 6-day trip to Isle Royale State Park that includes hiking, and a full-day trip an hour northeast along some remote Canadian shore (when the international border is open).

Michigan Sea Kayak Outfitters

Most popular with sea kayakers in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore with its breathtaking high cliffs and sea caves. Like Wisconsin's shore, mainland Michigan's coastline is largely sandstone and other soft rock, with some beautiful sandy beaches.

Isle Royale National Park is also part of Michigan even though it's just a handful of miles from the Minnesota/Canada border, and is a popular sea kayaking destination. Keewanaw Adventure Company (Copper Harbor, MI) offers several half and full-day kayak tours along the shoreline of the Keewanaw Peninsula. They also offer 4, 5 and 6-day overnight trips to Isle Royale (2021 trips cancelled due to Covid, unfortunately). Paddling Michigan’s Pictured Rocks Kayaking Tours (Munising, MI) offers several sea kayak tours to Pictured Rocks from 2-8 hours long. These include a kayak/hike combo and a sunset paddle. Pictured Rocks Kayaking (Munising, MI) offers a unique set up: they take you on a 72-passenger boat from which you’ll launch your kayak and paddle to all the main features along Pictured Rocks. This way you see as much of the coastline as possible in one day.

Rock Harbor Lodge (Isle Royale National Park, MI) is on Isle Royale and offers several multi-day kayak trips: each day on the water and each night in the comfort of the lodge. 3-6 day options are available (2021 trips already sold out in May—plan ahead!). Superior Kayaking Company (Munising, MI) is an intimate operation that offers 2 and 5-hour tours to Presque Isle and Grand Island. They also offer an overnight kayak camping tours from 2-5 days to Grand Island with its 200-foot cliffs and sea caves.

Ontario Sea Kayak Outfitters

While Ontario has far more Superior lakeshore than the three US states, it’s a remote part of Ontario with very few towns. So there are just a handful of sea kayak outfitters on the Canadian side of the Big Lake—one on the north side and two on its east end.

If you love big adventure with fewer people, thought, Canada is the place for you. The shoreline is similar to Minnesota's with plenty of cliffs, small islands, pebble beaches. Naturally Superior Adventures (Wawa, ON) offers specific multi-day kayak tours during  specific dates throughout the summer, with trips suitable for beginner through advanced paddlers. If none of their trips and dates work for you, they’ll work with you to design a custom trip. Rock Island Lodge (Wawa, ON) offers full-day tours along with basic instruction for beginners. They also offer a half-day basic sea kayak course with the other half-day free for you to paddle Michipicoten Bay. SAND Adventure Expeditions (Rossport, ON) is on the very north of Lake Superior. SAND (Such a Nice Day) specializes in 5-7 day sea kayak expeditions in their area. They also offers a full-day tour of the Rossport Islands and a 2-day sea kayak Lake Superior Starter Course.

Lake Superior can give you a truly wonderful sea kayaking experience, whether for a few hours or a few days. Make the most of your time on the water by signing on with one of these outfitting businesses for your best overall adventure.

BOOK YOUR ADVENTURE!

Best kayak for the great lakes.

It’s summer in Michigan and everyone wants to enjoy time on the beautiful waters of The Great Lakes State. Michigan boasts 3,288 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, 11,000 inland lakes, and 76,000 miles of rivers and streams . Swimming, fishing, and boating await the residents and visitors of Michigan.

Kayaking and other paddle sports are increasingly becoming a popular way to explore the waterways of Michigan. Kayaks come in many types :

  • River/Recreational Kayaks
  • Touring/Sea Kayaks
  • Hybrid Kayaks
  • Inflatable Kayaks
  • Folding Kayaks
  • Whitewater Kayaks

It’s important to know which kayak is right for your adventure, especially when heading out on any of  The Great Lakes.

Lake Michigan, Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, Lake Huron, and Lake Superior comprise The Great Lakes and surround the state of Michigan. Although they all bear the name “lake,” the Great Lakes are open-bodies of water that act more like a sea or ocean. Wind, waves, and tides occur on The Great Lakes, rendering them suitable of a sea-worthy boat.

Native Americans on The Great Lakes

Evidence exists of the first settlers along The Great Lakes Basin from nearly 10,00 years ago. The Native Americans occupying the area used canoes as a means of transportation and fishing. Birch or elm bark stretched over wooden frames formed the boats, making them lightweight for long portages.

Technology has advanced in boating exponentially, of course, since those early days. New materials and boat designs make any water activity much more efficient and enjoyable. Most kayaks sold today are made of:

  • Polyethylene
  • Thermoformed ABS
  • Composite/Fiberglass/Kevlar/Carbon Fiber

All of these materials can help you navigate rivers, lakes, and whitewater.

Sea Kayaks are Best for Great Lakes Touring

But if you plan to traverse a Great Lake, a sea kayak is the best bet for you. Sea kayaks sit low in the water, making them ideal for stable open water paddling. Their low profile keeps the effects of crosswinds to a minimum. And smaller cockpit openings keep paddlers dryer than other kayak models. Their longer length makes them faster, so it’s easier to get to a beach or cove if the wind increases.

Paddling Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

When you book a kayaking tour with Paddling Michigan , you can feel comfortable that you are on the best boat for sightseeing and accommodating the changing conditions. The majority of kayaks provided by Paddling Michigan are the Necky Looksha T Tandem Kayak . The Looksha T is designed to be steady and comfortable for touring. The smaller cockpit size will keep the cold Lake Superior water out, but you’ll want to make sure you feel comfortable in an area of about 17 inches.

All of the boats used by Paddling Michigan fit two people. The longer tandem size provides faster speed, from both its length and number of paddlers. The Looksha T can also store more gear for longer excursions. If you have an odd number of paddlers in your party, one will be paired with a Paddling Michigan guide or another person in the tour.

It’s not too late to book your summer kayaking trip to visit Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore along Lake Superior. For more information, check out the Paddling Michigan website here .

15 Beautiful Lakes in Alberta Canada

R oad tripping around Alberta is an experience of a lifetime. The majestic Rocky Mountains offer extraordinary views while driving and especially when you hike the trails.

Or while seated in a canoe or kayak visiting jaw dropping gorgeous lakes.

In this post you’ll find 15 beautiful lakes in the Canadian Rockies that you should visit.

You’ll find several of these gorgeous lakes in Alberta's National Parks. Jasper National Park has over 2,000 lakes but only around 100 are named lakes.

Keep reading for travel inspiration for your Alberta road trip vacation.

1. Lake Louise

The stunning turquoise color of Lake Louise makes you wonder if it’s real. To get the best view of Lake Louise you should hike up one of the trails.

Or hop in a canoe or kayak and paddle around Lake Louise, it’s only 2 km in length so it’s an easy paddling trip.

Even if you hike to the back of the lake and up towards the Plain of Six Glaciers trailhead, you’ll enjoy an excellent view of the lake.

Go on a sunny day for the most brilliant turquoise color and you'll see why it's also on our list of famous Canadian landmarks .

LEARN MORE: 12 Best Things to Do in Banff in Winter

2. Lake Minnewanka

When the sun is shining on Lake Minnewanka it’s another of the turquoise gems in Banff. You can take a boat tour around Lake Minnewanka, hike the shoreline, or enjoy a lakeside picnic.

Lake Minnewanka is a large glacial lake at 21 km (13 miles ) in length and 142 m (466 ft) deep.

The Stoney people named the lake Minn-waki which translates to 'Lake of the Spirits'.

3. Vermillion Lakes

A short drive west of Banff brings you to a serene view of Mt Rundle and marshlands abundant with birds.

Vermillion Lakes is the only place I have seen a moose in Banff National Park. He stood in the water while munching on the greens of nature’s buffet.

Will you see a moose at Vermilion Lakes? I don't know but you should let me know if you do.

4. Medicine Lake

On the scenic roadway to Maligne Lake you must stop at Medicine Lake . Hopefully, the sun is shining and a few puffy clouds float overhead, reflecting a mirror image in the water.

You can kayak at Medicine Lake. If you don’t have your own kayak you can rent one in Jasper.

5. Talbot Lake

Another beautiful lake in Jasper National Park, Talbot Lake is 30 km northeast of Jasper town. If you love fishing, then drop a line for lake whitefish and northern pike.

Talbot Lake has amazing views of the Rocky Mountains and it’s a superb place for kayaking in Jasper National Park .

6. Bow Lake

Bow Lake and Bow Glacier are well worth adding a stop on your Icefields Parkway itinerary (highway 93 north) on the way to Jasper from Lake Louise.

In wintertime when the water is frozen you can snowshoe or cross country ski across the lake to Bow Glacier Falls. In summer, there is a trail along the shoreline.

7. Peyto Lake

The famous fox shaped lake of Banff National Park is a joy to see.

While there is a viewing platform (crowded with tour bus tourists) you are much better off hiking up to Bow Summit for a better view of Peyto Lake.

Bow Summit Peyto Lake Overlook is a short easy hike but the tour buses don’t set foot on the trails so you will have more elbow room.

8. Herbert Lake

Along the Icefields Parkway in Banff National Park, Herbert Lake is one of the first lakes on this scenic and world renowned roadway.

Hike to the lake and wander around the lakeshore. Herbert Lake is lovely and serene.

9. Waterfowl Lake
