New pre-flight health check before you fly AirAsia
Airlines have suffered along with the rest of us during the Covid-19 pandemic. One thing is clear though, many are using this ‘down-time’ to develop and implement innovative technologies to improve their customers’ experience. AirAsia has been very proactive in moving with various digital solutions. Their latest innovation is to introduce a pre-flight health check, helping to make flying more seamless and contactless as well as safe and affordable.
How a pre-flight health check helps
AirAsia has partnered with digital transformation company GrayMatter to launch Scan2Fly . This industry leading technology determines a passenger’s eligibility to fly before they arrive at the airport, including real time verification of relevant health documentation.
AirAsia passengers can now scan and upload their medical certificates during online self check-in. This includes the corresponding processing of any documents required to verify that the passenger is approved to fly by the relevant authorities and possesses a valid COVID-19 Negative Certificate.
Following successful implementation, the system is currently live for selected AirAsia flights from Malaysia’s KLIA2 Airport to/from Singapore and to/from Surabaya. It will be launched soon for flights to and from Jakarta. The cloud-hosted technology is tightly integrated and tailored to AirAsia’s applications with robust information security. This technology will be introduced to other AirAsia destinations, where valid travel documents are required prior to travel.
Scan2Fly delivers numerous efficiencies, including
- reduced staff interaction at the airport
- peace of mind, before travelling to the airport.
Once the documents are uploaded, the approval/rejection status is provided automatically, including the reason for any rejection.
AirAsia has also made other recent enhancements in conjunction with strategic partner Vision-Box.
These include:
- automated bag drop services
- roving technology for temperature checks
- the airline’s contactless facial recognition passenger processing system.
The airline is also working with Vision-Box to further deploy other touchless experience systems including digital identity management, across the airline’s travel and finance ecosystem.
…. Innovation has always been in our DNA. Our digital transformation continues to gain momentum as we work hard to make travel in this new world more secure, hygienic, contactless and seamless than ever before by improving our digital capabilities which reduce costs and further enhance the customer journey. AirAsia FACES: Your face is now your boarding pass
1 November 2021
AirAsia has started rolling out FACES (Fast Airport Clearance Experience System), a facial recognition system that you might be able to experience on your next flight. Essentially, your face is now your boarding pass and it aims to provide a seamless and contactless experience at the airport. FACES will be deployed starting 1st November at KLIA2 (Kuala Lumpur) in Malaysia for selected flights and it will be expanded to more airports in the region in 2022.
AirAsia’s journey to use facial recognition started in 2018 when it deployed the first generation of FACES at Senai International Airport, Johor Bahru. The original system required travellers to register their faces at a kiosk and AirAsia had to install an automated boarding gate system which is a permanent fixture.
For the latest version, AirAsia is now using a portable battery-powered solution that is easier to deploy in various areas throughout the airport. Instead of using a kiosk, passengers can now activate FACES on their smartphones using the AirAsia Super App. To get started, just go to Account, scroll down and select FACES. Passengers are required to take a selfie and snap a picture of their passport or IC.
Before using, passengers are also required to verify their documents at the service desk at the airport. This is a one-time process and passengers will need to verify again if there’s a change of travel document.
At the moment, AirAsia FACES is currently deployed at the boarding gates and the low-cost carrier plans to expand the feature to cover more touchpoints including pre-departure security check and self-baggage-drop. We are told the facial recognition works with passengers aged 12 years old and above.
Before the official rollout, AirAsia has provided us with an early demo of the system. Each passenger takes about 3-5 seconds to recognise and obviously, you’ll have to take off your mask to scan your face. If the system couldn’t recognise you, there will be the option to scan your digital boarding pass below the display. For the boarding process, it doesn’t seem to be significantly faster but it removes a contact point between crew and passenger, which helps to reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection.
AirAsia Group’s Chief Operating Officer (COO) Javed Malik told us that FACES is something they have been working on for about 3 years and it is their program for biometric travel. With FACES, you don’t need to take your passport, ID, or papers out anymore, and you can simply use your face to travel. The airline eventually wants to allow you to check-in, book a ticket, board the flight and even buy products in the future using your face.
When we asked about potential concerns of passengers removing their face masks during the scan, he said even if passengers need to take them off for breathing or eating, they don’t have a problem with that but they need their passengers to be courteous and be aware of others, as well as protecting themselves and their crew.
AirAsia still encourages all passengers to wear a face mask before, during, and after the flight. The COO also added that ultimately, the AirAsia crew will always wear a mask throughout the time they interact with their guests and it is something they believe is the right way to go while complying with the SOPs of each government.
On privacy and security of the system, Javed Malik said the partners they have worked with are world leaders in border control biometrics and they are one of the only companies that have privacy by design built into the software itself. He shared their partner, Vision-Box, has complied with international standards and that makes AirAsia compliant to every data standard in Europe, America, Australia, and Asia.
Take note that interstate travel restrictions have been lifted for fully vaccinated travellers only. AirAsia will only allow fully vaccinated passengers on board their flights and guests are required to submit their vaccination details when they check-in via the app. Take note that additional travel requirements might be applicable when travelling to Sabah and Sarawak. The AirAsia Super App is available on Apple App Store , Google Play Store , and Huawei AppGallery .

AirAsia boosts biometrics, super-app as Malaysia travel resumes
11 October 2021 By Seth Miller 1 Comment
A 70% off sale like the one announced this week is enough to grab plenty of attention. But the bigger news from AirAsia as it resumes interstate operations is a major push to digital processes for travel, effectively eliminating paper documents for its guests.
All passengers are required, effective immediately, to check in using the AirAsia super app. This will reduce interaction between customers and crew at the airports. It also helps the airline to execute on its requirement that all travelers be fully vaccinated. AirAsia integrated its app with the national vaccination records on MySejahtera, allowing for validation of that status.
Barcodes on the app help reduce contact, but the airline is ready to take the next step. The long-touted FACES (Fast Airport Clearance Experience System) facial recognition system will be activated for all travelers in the weeks ahead. As Ria Asmat, CEO of AirAsia Malaysia explains:
Very soon, AirAsia will roll out FACES, our contactless facial recognition system that will make the boarding process even more swift and efficient. We would like to encourage everyone to enrol into FACES now with just a few simple steps on the airasia Super App and when you’re at the airport for your next flight, just approach any service counter to have your FACES verified against your travel documents and you’re good to fly without having to worry about holding any paper documents in hand.
The FACES tool launched for employees several years ago. AirAsia uses it to control access to its headquarters near Kuala Lumpur International Airport, among other things. And the company claimed it was ready to move forward with the effort in 2019. Then COVID happened.
Late last year AirAsia announced a partnership with Vision-Box and its Orchestra Identity Management System, with plans to cover more than 150 airports in the AirAsia network . It now appears that project is ready to go live, at least in part.
Passengers will be required to confirm their travel documents at the airport as part of the enrollment process. Once that completes, however, nearly all interactions, from bag drop to aircraft boarding, can be managed via biometric scans rather than manual document review.
That is also effectively forces passengers into using the super app, a key component of the company’s “digital transformation” strategy and now able to deliver everything from ride hailing to financial services certainly is a nice side effect of the moves.
AirAsia Malaysia’s initial route network for the relaunch covers a flight schedule of 61 daily flights across its 16 domestic destinations. This includes flights from Kuala Lumpur to:
- Langkawi (63x weekly),
- Alor Setar (10x weekly),
- Kota Kinabalu (35x weekly),
- Bintulu (2x weekly),
- Kuching (10x weekly),
- Labuan (14x weekly),
- Miri (4x weekly),
- Penang (21x weekly),
- Sibu (2x weekly),
- Sandakan (21x weekly),
- Johor Bahru (10x weekly),
- Kuala Terengganu (28x weekly),
- Tawau (28x weekly), and
- Kota Bharu (35x weekly).
More routes will be added and frequencies increased as the travel demand grows in tandem with the reopening of more leisure destinations in the near future and subject to approval from the authorities.

AirAsia Introduces Scan2Fly System To Determine Passengers Travel Eligibility
Due to the travel regulations implemented by countries’ governments to break the COVID-19 chain, AirAsia has developed Scan2Fly for the benefit and peace of mind for their guests, as well as the authorities of every country that they fly to.
So far, AirAsia is one of the first airlines in the world that has this capability for the verification of PCR test certificates and other travel-required documents!
Scan2Fly is an AI-based feature that allows you to upload your documents required during self check-in for specific countries due to COVID-19, like a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test certificate or SafeTravel Pass.
This feature takes just a few seconds to analyze your document(s) validity and determine your travel eligibility.
How Scan2Fly Works
Guest scans or uploads the certificate/document during the self check-in process
The AI integrated with AirAsia’s check-in portal analyzes the uploaded document based on several factors required by the destination country:
72-hour validity (or as prescribed) from the date of the sample provided to the clinic or lab
Guest’s name must match the certificate/document
Type of test done and result
The certificate/document’s credibility (whether it is from an accredited clinic or hospital)
3. Within a few seconds, the guest will receive a verification if his/her document details are valid, or a rejection message if the details are invalid.
View more details on the Scan2Fly on AirAsia Official Website .

'Document Check Counter' - AirAsia
By alt December 3, 2019 in Don Mueang Airport Forum
Recommended Posts
I have Googled this, and I think I have the answer, but would love confirmation from those more in the know!
Dec 9, International Flight from DMK - Mandalay.
We are Irish, so need an eVisa for Myanmar (we have this) hence the need for 'Document Check'
No checked-in luggage.
I read online that we should go to the 'Web Check-in Counter' for this.... can anyone confirm?
I also read that even before going to the 'Web Check-in Counter' we also need to go to the Kiosk to print off a receipt, despite the fact that we've just checked-in online? (Seems totally counter-productive if true?)

I can't help you with the eVisa part.
But yes, the quoted part is bizarre. Welcome to LOS, TiT.
We have a boarding pass printed off (with a bar-code). The below image is what it states on the boarding pass.
This is why i'm confused as to whether we still need to go to a kiosk or not... bizarre but i've read the issues caused at DMK because of this confusion, so don't want to be one of those guys!

I can't help you with the Myanmar eVisa bit but gave up checking in online with AirAsia as they still push you towards the automated kiosks which also print out the luggage tags. Other than that AirAsia are the best LCC in LOS IMO.
Thanks. We might just go to the kiosk and see if our boarding pass scans and then go to the web check-in counter

I wouldn't even bother with scanning your pre-printed boarding pass as that doesn't even appear to be an option at the kiosks. Approach the kiosk, plug in your booking number and opt for 'yes' to everything. Out comes your printed boarding passes and luggage tags. The young students are very helpful as well, if they know what they're doing. Have a pleasant and safe journey. TiT.

Going to post against the above on this. Myanmar flights must have a document check (they'll need to see your e-visa) Look for the shortest queue in international check in (online check-in/bag drop) and head there. Not the automated kiosks. Staff milling around will help direct you.
Ah, perfect! So just like the boarding pass said... go straight to 'document check' (ie. shortest international desk / bag drop) and skip the kiosk... great!
Just after weighing our bags and realised that I will need to check in 1 bag.
I guess i'll now need to go to the kiosk to get a bag tag? The boarding pass still states that Step 1 is to go to the Bag Drop Counter, but again, from what i've read on another TV thread was that you had to go to the kiosk.
AirAsia seem to be a nightmare! Can't wait to see how it goes.

If you already checked in online and has a print out, skip the kiosk and go directly to Bag Drop counter. Air Asia staff will do both document check and baggage check-in at the same Bag Drop counter.
