Cyclists, cycling fans, and family and friends of the riders have all been eagerly awaiting the 2023 edition of the Cape Town Cycle Tour, and itâs finally arrived!
The 45th race promises to be better than ever because the organisers have added an extra race to the schedule. Keep reading to learn more about this exciting addition and any other information you need to stay in the loop about the Cape Town Cycle Tour. Remember to book a cleaning service with South Africaâs #1 home services company around that time instead of having to worry about chores before or after the big race.
First Time Hearing About The Cycle Tour?
If youâve never attended, or even heard of this prestigious event, hereâs a quick breakdown. Formerly known as the âCape Argusâ, the well-known race was renamed the âCape Town Cycle Tourâ in 2014. Going back to the very beginning, 1977 was the year of inception when it was first thought up. Although, at that time it wasnât a race, but rather a way to bring attention to the need for cycling paths for Cape Townâs many cyclists.
Bill Mylrea and John Stegmann are the two brilliant minds that came together to set in motion what would one day become one of South Africaâs favourite cycling races. Over 500 cyclists took to the roads in 1978 to compete in âThe Big Ride In.â Fast-forward 45 years later, and the Cape Town Cycle Tour is now a name that echoes throughout the streets of Cape Town and the rest of the country with much pride and excitement. Strap yourselves in and get ready for the latest installment of this epic race, taking place on Sunday, 12 March 2023.
Giving Back
While the action-packed racing and results are the main topics of discussion on the day, the Cycle Tour is about more than the road to the finish line. Thanks to the Pedal Power Association and the Rotary Club of Claremont, almost R50 000 000 has been given back to the Mother City in the last 5 years alone! This money is used to improve lives and living conditions for so many who need it, all across the Cape Peninsula.
Riders are encouraged to join charity groups or start their own charitable drives to further help the cause and change lives on a daily basis.
Cape Town Cycle Tour Expo
Health and fitness are some of the core pillars of the Cycle Tour, and thatâs what the expo aims to encourage. Every year competitors make their way to the expo to register, as it is the only registration venue for the race, but they stay longer than needed to browse through the many exhibitorsâ stands offering great products and services.
Family, friends, and the general public from all over are invited to join in on the fun at the expo and soak up the information provided about various health, financial, and communications products. Click here to get more information on the expo.Â
Race Routes
As mentioned above, the organisers of the Cycle Tour are proud to be adding an extra race to the schedule. This is being done in the hopes of encouraging younger and newer cyclists to experience the thrill of racing around one of the most beautiful cities in the world, before plunging into the longer route. Click on the links below for respective race routes:
- 42km Race Route
- 109km Race Route
Road Closures
Due to the nature of the event, road closures will be taking place all around Cape Town on Saturday, the 12th, and Sunday, the 13th of March. If you plan on being on the roads that weekend, click here for a full downloadable list of road closures to help you on your way.Â
Conclusion
If you arenât much of a cyclist, there are many other ways to spend your time outside in the beautiful city of Cape Town. Although the days of summer are coming to an end, the autumn weather is still inviting enough to try these outdoor workouts . If you are participating in the Cape Town Cycle Tour, good luck and stay safe! We believe in you just as much as we believe in the excellent SweepStars providing unmatched cleaning services in record time.

It is now one of the worldâs leading cycle events, but when Bill Mylrea, John Stegmann and Louis de Waal first proposed t he Argus Tour, it was meant to be a protest ride to âencourageâ the city council to think about bicycles as part of its urban planning , and look after cyclists on the (by 1978 standards) busy roads.
As such, the event failed spectacularly for decades, but what a wonderful deviation from those goals it has become as the biggest timed bike race in the world.
The irony is that cycling has become so big in South Africa, thanks to the Cape Town Cycle Tour, that those dreamy objectives are now being realised across the city in the form of bike lanes, and cycle safety projects within and beyond the city limits . Read More about Cycle Tour’s history here.

Cape Town Cycle Tour 2023 results: Every winner of every category
Chris Jooste claimed Sunday’s Cape Town Cycle Tour title while Kim Le Court De Billot completed a hat-trick of women’s wins.
TufoBMC rider Chris Jooste showed his class to outsprint Andries Nigrini (TEG) and Jaedon Terlouw (Honeycomb) to claim Sunday’s Cape Town Cycle Tour title in a time of 2:36:14.

âThis is the pinnacle of the sport in South Africa,â Jooste commented after the finish.
âIâm thrilled with the win.â
According to Jooste, he knew there was a rare chance for the breakaway to stay away when they managed to open the gap into a headwind.
TRAGEDY | RIP: Rider dies in Cape Town Cycle Tour tragedy
âWith such strong riders in the break, things fell into place. I knew that if we kept up the speed and our confidence, victory would be ours.â
The menâs elite racing category over the iconic 109km coastal route around the Cape Peninsula produced some intense and exciting moments.
The weather on the day was ideal for racing, with sunny conditions and a light southeasterly breeze.
The conditions made for a few characteristic early attacks, but all the big teams worked to bring it all back together.
Up the deceptively tough Smitswinkel climb, five riders got off the front and forged the break.
The five stayed together until Hout Bay when Nick James (DMS) dropped back.
âThatâs when the realisation kicked that we were going to go to the finish, and a podium was a potential,â said Andries Nigrini (TEG), who finished second behind Jooste.Â
The breakaway didnât always seem to work together in consistent fashion, with the youthful Loubser doing the bulk of the work. With no other team-mates in the break, he seemed to forge something of an allegiance with Jooste, whose experience was evident throughout.
Cape Town native and fourth-place finisher Daniel Loubser expressed his elation at completing the race unscathed, stating, âI am overjoyed to have had a smooth ride and crossed the finish line in one piece.â
Loubserâs knowledge of the course proved invaluable to his fellow breakaway riders, as he was able to read the ever-changing conditions and offer crucial insights.
He helped guide the four by sharing vital information about wind patterns and optimal feeding locations to help them maintain their lead. Loubserâs strategic advice undoubtedly played a key role in their success.
The chasing bunch got organised up Chapmanâs Peak, driven by DMS.
They were closely watched by the team of Honeycomb, who were represented by Terlouw up front. In Honeycombâs ranks was defending champion Marc Pritzen (although riding in the colours of his team Team EF Education-NIPPO Development).
Cape Town Cycle Tour one of the worldâs most iconic events
However, the bunch left it too late and couldnât bring back the breakaway.
âI kicked a bit too early,â commented third-placed Terlouw, explaining how he saw the main bunch coming back.
âI got a bit nervous there and went out as hard as I could but couldnât hold out. That was my first time in a breakaway, and I learned a lot,â he said.Â
Speaking after the race, Jooste expressed his delight at what is undoubtedly the biggest win of his career.
âThis is an incredible feeling,â he said.
âIâve won every age category since u/12, so this is amazing.â
The Cape Town Cycle Tour is one of the worldâs most iconic cycling events, attracting thousands of participants and spectators each year.
The menâs elite racing category is just one of the many highlights of the race, which also includes elite and age group categories for women, hand cyclists, and tandem riders.
The event this year also debuted the inclusion of a 42km route.Â
The event organisers expressed their satisfaction with the outcome of a cycling celebration, praising the participants for their skill and endurance.
âThe Cape Town Cycle Tour is a celebration of cycling and the human spirit,â said David Bellairs, Director of the Cape Town Cycle Tour.
âThe womenâs and menâs elite categories were a true testament to the passion and dedication of these athletes, and we are proud to have them as part of our event.âÂ

About the Cape Town Cycle Tour
The Cape Town Cycle Tour is the largest timed cycling event in the world. Attracting in excess of 35 000 cyclists from around the globe each year, this prestigious event is definitely a unique experience for participants and spectators alike.
Based in Cape Town, the Cycle Tour represents 109 km of some of the most scenic spots in the world. Starting in the City Centre the route makes its way down the Blue Route leading into Simonstown then turning at Smitswinkel and heading back along the coastline before the steady climb up Chapmans Peak and finally the short, steep hill of Suikerbossie. The downhill to the finish in Green Point is a welcome respite for the weary cyclist.
There are approximately 16 refreshment stations and 6 medical points along the route (see route map ). A team of at least 2500 volunteer from a variety of organisations ensures that all operations run smoothly and efficiently on the day. A carnival incorporating hospitality tents, entertainment and guaranteed fun awaits the cyclists, their families and friends at Greenpoint Stadium.
As this is a non-profit event, all proceeds go to two charities. Pedal Power Association uses their share to develop cycling in the community by sponsoring development cyclists and hosting fun rides in the Western Cape area. The second charity, the Rotary Club of Claremont invests their share into a variety of fundraising projects.
In addition to the Cape Town Cycle Tour, the Junior Tour (6 to 12 year olds), the Tricycle Tour (2 to 6 year olds), the Mountain Bike Challenge and the Expo all make up the Lifecycle Week, a series of events occurring in the week preceding the Cycle Tour.

Best things to see and do in Moscow
Moscow is the capital of Russia and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Asia. Itâs rich and complex history is a constant reminder of its strategic position between Europe and Asia and makes it one of the cities you should visit once in your life. In terms of the many iconic landmarks, the delicious cuisine, and the characteristic, colorful architecture it has, Moscow is full of surprises for first-timers and seasoned travelers. Apart from the main attractions, it has like the Kremlin or Red Square, Moscow has many hidden gems for you to discover on your free walking tour with your local guide.
On any of the free guided tours we offer in Moscow , you will be able to find a selection of many tours which are available in different languages and at different times of day, like the morning, afternoon, and evening. Since Moscow is such a large metropolis, getting your bearings by doing a guruwalk with a local guide who will show you all Moscowâs hidden gems is a great idea. This way you get to learn as much as possible about the local culture and way of life. A trip to Moscow wouldn't be complete without visiting iconic places like St Basilâs Cathedral, Leninâs Mausoleum, the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, or the State Historical Museum, before getting some fresh air at Gorky Park, the medieval church of Kolomenskoye, or shopping at Izmailovsky Market. Donât miss visiting the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Bolshoi Theater, or checking out the Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve.
Many travelers have left their r eviews and opinions about the local guides , gurus, and the routes they walked. If you have any questions about the routes or what is included in the tour, check out their opinions.
