School visits

School visits are a great way to deliver Curriculum for Excellence through hands-on experiences, encouraging discovery and exploration.

Choosing where to go

Most Trust places lend themselves to cross-curricular activity including art, drama and music as well as social studies, science and technology topics.

If you’re looking for inspiration, we have a list of topics and themes covered at Trust places – each one offers unique opportunities.

Our properties are spread across Scotland, and you don’t have to travel far to begin exploring. Connections with local heritage and landscapes can be among the most valuable experiences for learners.

Booking a visit

Information on school visits, including tours, opening hours and availability, is available from individual properties.

Many of our places are very popular for school visits, so you should book early to avoid disappointment. Please also make sure you book all visits, even if you are not using our staff. We need to know that your young people are at the property for safety reasons. You should also book coach or other transport parking to ensure there is space for you when you arrive.

Travel subsidies

Thanks to generous support from the Scottish Government, we’re able to offer a transport subsidy to schools wishing to visit The Battle of Bannockburn , Culloden or Robert Burns Birthplace Museum . The subsidy covers 75% of transport costs, up to a maximum of £300.

Rebecca, Mark and their team run outstanding adventurous school residential trips, summer camps for young people, and bespoke courses for adults and families. Our Home Your Adventure

school trips scotland

A timeless and truly wild natural environment where mountains rise majestically from the intricate coves and bays of sheltered sea lochs…

Climb in the mountains, sea kayak amongst seals and nesting sea birds, rock climb on ancient crags, survive on uninhabited islands, lift creels from the depths, and far more.

Stay in comfort in a Norwegian-style wooden building where the sea laps just yards from the door and enjoy delicious home-cooked food.

Ridgway Adventure is just two hours’ drive from Inverness in the north of Scotland. Inverness has simple flight connections from major domestic airports, direct flights from Amsterdam, and direct rail travel from London.

Rebecca’s parents first came to Ardmore in 1964 and in 1969 the John Ridgway Adventure School opened its doors to the first course.   It has been the starting point of many ground-breaking expeditions and, during the summer months for the last 50 years, the venue for people of all ages to experience their own adventures with us in the mountains and on the sea.

John Ridgway rows the north Atlantic with Chay Blyth from Cape Cod, Massachusetts to the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland.

John on board English Rose IV crossing the Atlantic as part of the Golden Globe Yacht Race.

John and Marie-Christine construct the John Ridgway Adventure School building at Skerricha, across the water from Ardmore, with the first course arriving in July that year.

John with the ‘Ladies Course’ at Lone before climbing Arkle. The old stone stables at Lone are still used by courses to this day as a base camp for expeditions into the mountains.

Marie-Christine and John cross the Magellan Straits by rubber dingy to make the first crossing of the Gran Campo Nevado ice cap in Chilean Patagonia.

John, Marie-Christine and Rebecca (at the age of 7) sail to Cape Verde and the Spanish Sahara on English Rose V.

An international summer camp course sail onboard English Rose V in Loch Laxford.

Rebecca at the start of a three-week expedition to become the first woman to kayak around Cape Horn.

John, Marie-Christine and Rebecca sail English Rose VI across the Southern Ocean to the Antarctic Peninsula as part of an 18-month voyage from Ardmore.

Fifty years after the first course at Ardmore, Rebecca collects a school team from Survival Island.

The majority of school trips we plan and organise are to the beautiful capital city of Edinburgh, a compact City that is very suitable for school trips. The imposing Edinburgh Castle looks over the city and is home to Scotland’s crown jewels. Great School Trips In Scotland

With more school trips taking place then ever before best value is absolutely crucial and trips abroad are happening less frequently. What’s great is that this forces us to take a look at what’s available closer to home and we often wonder why we were spending so much time and money abroad anyway.

Scotland is a perfect example of great school trips on your doorstep. Easily accessed from any part of the UK, far quicker and cheaper then going abroad and with a magical and diverse array of exciting things to do with school trip children.  Children in your school trip group will find the natural drama of Scotland fascinating, with the mists, deep lakes and leafy forests, crumbling forts and ghosts of Scottish clans, salt breezes and tangy mountain air.

On your school trip to Scotland, explore Scotland’s landscape of lochs and mountains, and its interesting geography. Discover the different historical and culture elements that can be rightly claimed to be unique to this country. From rock to opera, Scottish arts and culture has the power to enthrall, challenge, provoke and inspire And the icing on the cake is that the Scots are warm and friendly to your school trip group, happy to share their passion and knowledge of their wonderful country.

Edinburgh Camera Obscura 2

Camera Obscura

A school trip to Camera Obscura is a fascinating and highly amusing way to see Edinburgh and learn about its  history . From inside this mysterious Victorian rooftop chamber, school groups can see live moving images of the city, projected onto a viewing table through a giant periscope. It's a great way of helping students to learn about Edinburgh’s heritage whilst keeping them engaged.

The floors beneath the Camera Obscura hold the "World of Illusions", which offers interactive exhibits demonstrating aspects of optical illusions, light, and colour. A colourful way to  explore science  with your class.

Edinburgh St Marys Close

Real Mary Kings Close

Mary King's Close is a warren of underground streets and spaces in the Old Town area of Edinburgh, Scotland. It took its name from one Mary King, daughter of advocate Alexander King, who in the 17th century had owned several properties within the close. Back in those days closes were named after the most prominent citizen or the most commonly found business to be on the close.

For years, the hidden Closes of Old Town Edinburgh have been shrouded in myths and mysteries. Today the attraction brings these stories to life with a costumed character tour guide based on a one time resident. Groups will explore the underground site, hearing the fascinating stories.

Not received your email, forgotten password, how to use this learning and assessment resource to improve practice.

This resource supports teachers with a useful toolkit in addition to clear advice on specific details.

  • Are you using the outdoor environment to its full capacity?
  • Do you ‘fear’ leaving the school grounds?
  • Are you unclear as to your responsibility and that of your staff when off site?
  • Do you need answers to some of the ‘urban myths’ that surround off–site learning?

Explore this Learning and assessment resource

Scotland’s outdoor environment offers motivating, exciting, varied, relevant and easily accessible activities from pre-school years through to college and beyond. Through Curriculum for Excellence, the Scottish Government endorses the value of children and young people enjoying positive learning and play experiences in a wide variety of settings from galleries and museums to woodlands, parks and wild, natural spaces, as well as planned adventure and residential experiences. An enjoyable, creative, challenging learning journey helps children and young people learn by experience and grow as confident and responsible citizens who value and appreciate their local area and the wider environment of Scotland, which includes spectacular landscapes, rich natural heritage and a diverse built environment including landmarks of international significance.

There is a need for schools and other groups to make the most of the vast learning potential of the outdoors by ‘going out there’ and employers and those leading groups need to have confidence that the approach they are taking meets legal requirements and helps enable positive experiences for children and young people. While local authorities’ guidance and regulations remain authoritative, it is expected that ‘Going Out There’ should be adopted as a common framework across Scotland by all those managing or organising visits or providing activities and venues. It seeks to increase confidence and co-operation and recognises in particular that the vast majority of outdoor learning involves routine visits to places in the local area. It does not cover work experience.

The framework has been developed in partnership by the Scottish Government, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the Scottish Advisory Panel for Outdoor Education (SAPOE), Education Scotland and the Association of Directors of Education, with input from other partners including voluntary organisations and providers.

This framework refreshes and updates the Health and Safety on Educational Excursions (HASEE) guidance and its supplements which are now withdrawn. It adopts a low bureaucracy, enabling approach to outdoor experience and off-site visits, reflecting the step change in the approach to educational visits detailed in the HSE High Level Statement, ‘School trips and outdoor learning activities: Tackling the health and safety myths’. The HSE statement makes clear that:

The focus should be on how the real risks arising from such visits are managed rather than a focus on paperwork There is a need for a proportionate and sensible approach for planning and organising off-site activities.

Various student allowance and grant support questions: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002

Information requested

1. Whether a minimum national allowance for foster and kinship care has been introduced in Scotland? 2. What steps the Scottish Government has taken to ensure pupils from low-income families can take part in school trips? 3. What work has been conducted to introduce substantial reforms to student support? 4. Whether a special support payment for students on benefits who may lose out because they are entitled to student support has been introduced in Scotland? If not, is there a date for such a payment being introduced? 5. What work has been done to introduce a care experience grant in Scotland?

The answer to your questions are: 1. A minimum national allowance for foster and kinship care has not been introduced in Scotland. The Scottish Government continues to work closely with COSLA to find a way forward on the introduction of a Scottish Recommended Allowance for foster and kinship carers. 2. As part of the 2021 Programme for Government, the Scottish Government committed to ensuring that pupils from lower-income families can take part in school trips, providing support for children to go on curriculum-related trips and activities, and Primary 6/7 residentials, and giving secondary school pupils the right to go on at least one ‘optional’ trip during their time at school. We fully recognise that learning outside the classroom is an essential part of education. Children should not miss out simply because their parents cannot afford the cost. As you may be aware, over the next four years we are increasing investment to tackle the poverty-related attainment gap. Funding will be equitably distributed to schools and local authorities throughout the country as part of the refreshed Schools Attainment Challenge (SAC). There will be a continued distribution of Pupil Equity Funding (PEF) and an equitable allocation to all 32 local authorities, Strategic Equity Fund (SEF), as part of an increased investment of £1 billion over the course of the Parliamentary term - representing a substantial increase on last term’s £750m funding. This approach enables us to best target resources to our most disadvantaged children and young people and schools where it can have the greatest impact. PEF is allocated to schools on the basis of free school meal registrations of pupils in P1-S3, with headteachers and teachers able to make local decisions about which children and young people would benefit most from any particular intervention or approach, e.g. school trips, whilst keeping a clear focus on delivering equity and helping support their attainment through improving outcomes for learners impacted by poverty. The refreshed programme and its associated funding will continue to empower headteachers and enable local authorities to work with them to implement approaches to support children and young people impacted by poverty in their local contexts. The funding should be focused on resources, activities and approaches which will lead to improvements in literacy, numeracy and support health and wellbeing. We are also tackling the cost of the school day which is supported by Attainment Scotland Funding. Many schools now ensure no cost is required for extra-curricular activities, residential trips, theatre experiences or outdoor learning experiences for all learners. This ensures children have access to the same opportunities. 3 & 4 In our Programme for Government, we committed to start work on the introduction of a range of substantial reforms to student support. These include:

  • Expanding our total student support package to reach the equivalent of the living wage over the next three years.
  • Introducing a special support payment so that students who are in receipt of benefits do not lose out because they are in receipt of, or entitled to, student support.
  • Halting the interest on student loans during maternity leave.
  • Undertaking a review into the funding provision for postgraduate students.
  • Improving the support available to estranged students with a package of support equivalent to the Living Wage.
  • Exploring whether a programme of guarantorship for estranged students, who are disproportionately vulnerable to exploitation within the housing market, can be created in partnership with colleges and universities.

So far we have:

  • Commenced a review of the future of summer student support.
  • Recently published the results from a small scale Student Summer Support Survey, which provides baseline evidence for the First 100 Days commitment to review summer support for students.
  • Delivered the first 100 days commitment to provide an additional £20 million in summer hardship support for the 2020/21 Academic Year (AY) via college and university Discretionary Funds. Established a new stakeholder group to inform work being undertaken to deliver the Student Support Programme for Government commitments.
  • In February this year, we announced a £350 loan uplift for 2022/23 AY for higher education students. This means that the most disadvantaged students can access £8,100 per year through bursary and loan and is the first step v in our commitment to provide student support in line with the living wage over the next three years.
  • Began a 2 year programme, giving students in receipt of the Care Experienced Bursary the option to receive their current funding in 12-monthly payments. We will use the findings of this to determine whether it should be extended to the undergraduate package from 2024/25 AY.
  • Recommenced work on the data gathering exercise on estranged students which is due to complete in August 2022. This data gathering exercise will inform any future changes to the support offered to estranged students, including meeting the manifesto commitment to offer a package of support equivalent to the living wage.
  • Commenced work to introduce a special support payment so that students on benefits do not lose out because they are in receipt of, or entitled to, student support. We are committed to delivering this within this parliamentary term.

5. The Promise, published in February 2020, set out the direction that the children’s care system in Scotland needs to take to ensure that all young people with experience of care grow up loved, safe, and respected and with robust scaffolding’ of support in place when it is needed. The 2021 SNP Manifesto included a commitment to invest £10 million to introduce a Care Leaver Grant. There was a subsequent commitment (and a change of name to Care Experience Grant) in the Scottish Government Programme for Government (PfG) 2021-22. The Care Experience Grant will be introduced to provide young people with care experience additional financial support and security as they transition out of care. This is a £200 payment that will be paid on an annual basis for up to 10 years. We have estimated that it will benefit up to 50,000 young people aged 16-25 per year who may not have access to the same family support networks as many of their non-care experienced peers. Officials are working at pace with stakeholders and potential partners to identity feasible delivery options for the payment. In consideration of timescales associated with this commitment, we will balance ambition and pace with the need to deliver the payment effectively and that it meets the needs of individuals with care experience. The Scottish Government will make an announcement in due course on how it intends to progress the delivery of the Care Experience Grant. About FOI

Scotland's first 'tequila' - but it can't use the name

A spirit maker based along the Solway shoreline has become the first creator of tequila in Scotland - only it cannot use that name.

The Dark Art Distillery was set up near Galloway Forest Park - the UK's first dark sky park - by Andrew Clark Hutchison, a Scot who was born in Mexico City.

Having developed award-winning gins, he turned his attention to his birthplace and, discovered there had not been a tequila spirit made in Scotland.

For a year, he has worked with Dark Art's master distiller Gerard Macluskey on the possibility of creating the drink.

Gerard learned his trade with Tanqueray Gordon in Essex, Smirnoff Vodka and various small distilleries.

The pair have now unveiled Vespero to coincide with International Dark Skies Week.

The drink's central ingredient is the blue weber agave plant.

Mr Macluskey said he had to draw on his 40 years of experience in the industry to distil a tequila recipe in Scotland

He said: "This is something different, certainly, and I'm very proud of being at the forefront of doing something that hasn’t been done before in Scotland.

"We've had trials with leading mixologists and the reactions have been great."

The Dark Art Distillery, which is based in Kirkcudbright's old Johnston School, opened in 2021.

Mr Clark Hutchison and his brother were born in Mexico City, where his parents lived from the late 1950s to 1967.

The 57-year-old said: "My father went there with Paisley firm Coats.

"Having Mexico City as my place of birth on my passport, I was always keen to do something from my heritage, and where my parents first lived as a couple.

"It was really exciting to do something with a Mexican inspiration."

He said it was "fantastic" to see the drink come to fruition.

Why it can't be called tequila?

If you're looking for Scotland's first tequila, you won't find it under that name. Just like Scotch whisky has to be produced in Scotland, so tequila can only be distilled in Mexico.

"It smells like tequila, it tastes like tequila and it's made like tequila, but it can't be called tequila because it's 100% distilled in Scotland," said Mr Clark Hutchison.

"That's the beauty of it for me.

"There are other Scottish distilleries that have tequila, but they get it from Mexico, whereas this is 100% distilled in Scotland, here in Kirkcudbright. We're making it from scratch."

The name Vespero relates to venus and the evening star.

Mr Clark Hutchison explains "the inspiration when we opened our distillery was all about the dark skies above the Galloway Forest Park so we were trying to get a link to astronomy, which is a big part of Mexican heritage.

"It fits with the heritage of both."

There's also a personal element for Mr Clark Hutchison.

He added: "For me, it's been a really interesting journey, because as we've gone through the process I've picked up books my dad had from his time in Mexico.

"It made me read those books, and connected me with him, even though he's not here anymore.

"It's been really nice to read the books from Mexico that he had read before me when he was travelling there. That's been a really nice journey for me."
