London - Gretna Green - Glasgow

Hotel: Premier Inn / Holiday Express Strathclyde or similar

Meal: B:Excluded L:Excluded D:Included

Today morning join up with your coach and depart towards Gretna Green. The coach will start from Wembley and do various pick-ups along the M1 and M6 Corridor. We will be covering quite a distance today to reach Scotland, so ensure you carry your key essentials and devices for your entertainment for the journey. In the afternoon we stop for lunch at Gretna Green, the UK's most famous place to get married and home of the world-famous Iron Forgeries. Today why not speak to your tour manager who can get you traditional shortbreads at a reasonable cost. The stop will only sell continental/English food, and there will be no fast food restaurants located within the services so make sure you are prepared. We then board back onto the coach and continue making our way North towards Scotland, making our way to the city of Glasgow. We expect to arrive in Glasgow, in the early evening. We make our way straight to Glasgow Cathedral, which is one of Scotland's most magnificent medieval buildings, Glasgow Cathedral is the only one on the Scottish mainland to survive the Reformation of 1560 intact. We enjoy a delicious Indian meal at the restaurant before boarding our coach and making our way to the hotel for our three-night stay. Get a good night's sleep as more wonders await you tomorrow.

Visiting Attractions

Glasgow - loch lomond - fort william - glasgow.

Meal: B:Included L:Excluded D:Included

After our breakfast, we board the coach and make our way towards the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, which is where Loch Lomond is situated. On arrival at Loch Lomond, why not enjoy an optional boat cruise; here appreciate the picturesque views of the highlands, whilst indulging in a warm cup of tea or coffee. The Loch Lomond or "Lake of the Elms" is a freshwater Scottish loch which crosses the Highland Boundary Fault, often considered the boundary between the lowlands of Central Scotland and the Highlands. If you decide to forgo the Loch Lomond cruise you can spend the time admiring the scenic beauty from the shoreline of the Loch, which gives you picturesque views of the national park. We then make our way along the scenic route towards Fort William, to visit the Nevis Range. On arrival, we take a cable car (subject to operation) to Aonach Mòr on the Nevis range. Standing at 1,345 metres above sea level, it is a popular mountain destination. We will also stop today at the Commando Memorial, which is a Category A listed monument in Lochaber, Scotland, dedicated to the men of the original British Commando Forces raised during World War II. Additionally, we visit the Neptune's staircase, which is a flight of eight locks on the Caledonian Canal. This amazing feat of engineering raises the canal by 19m over a quarter of a mile of continuous masonry and takes around 90 minutes for a boat to travel up or down the locks. Built by Thomas Telford between 1803 and 1822, it is the longest staircase lock flight in Scotland. We then make our drive back to the restaurant in the evening, before going back to the hotel.

A Perfect Itinerary for 4 Days in Scotland

A Perfect Itinerary for 4 Days in Scotland

I spent just 4 days in Scotland on my first trip here.

Table of Contents

While this may sound like a short amount of time, it is often the way when you have limited holidays and want to fit in a visit to other countries in the UK and Europe.

The truth is, you can see and experience a lot with just 4 days in Scotland. And it may be comforting to know that your first trip to Scotland will not be your last.

I am living proof of this- after my first 4 day trip to Scotland I moved to Edinburgh two years later!

This 4 day Scotland itinerary is a replica of my first trip here.

I’ve made some amendments [I know Scotland a whole lot better now] but 80% of this itinerary is where I went and what I did. This itinerary includes a little bit of everything: castles, historic buildings, lochs, street art, a whisky distillery, a drive through the highlands and more!

So if you’re looking for inspiration on what to see in Scotland in 4 days read on for my tried, tested and refined 4 day Scotland itinerary!

4 days in Scotland: An Itinerary

Where to stay.

For this itinerary you will spend 2 nights in Edinburgh and 2 nights in Glasgow. Here are a few of my accommodation recommendations:

  • Budget: Castle Rock Hostel
  • Mid-range: The Dunstane Houses
  • Bed and breakfast: JustB
  • Luxury: The Witchery by the Castle

Glasgow:

  • Budget: Glasgow Youth Hostel
  • Mid-range: Ibis Styles George Square
  • Luxury: Kimpton – Blytheswood Square Hotel

Day 1: Explore Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh

  • Edinburgh Castle
  • The Royal Mile
  • National Museum of Scotland

After starting your day with a hearty breakfast [you’ll need it] you’ll first head to Edinburgh Castle to explore Scotland’s most famous castle [grab your skip the line ticket here – it’s quicker and cheaper to buy online]. Inside Edinburgh Castle you’ll see pieces of Scotland’s history such as Mons Meg , St Margaret’s Chapel , the Stone of Destiny and the Scottish Crown Jewels .

Afterwards you’ll walk The Royal Mile , which is actually a Scottish mile. There are plenty of touristy shops to satisfy your needs, as well as pubs and restaurants.

Here’s a tip- shops on The Royal Mile are a lot more expensive, so if you want to buy souvenirs I recommend buying them away from here and Princes Street.

Read more: 10 Must-Sees in Scotland You Can’t Miss

ultimate scotland travel planning bundle

There is so much to see on The Royal Mile and you’ll find yourself diverting from it to explore closes [narrow residential streets with through access] and side streets.

Make sure you check out Victoria Street , a gorgeous winding street that is located a short detour from The Royal Mile.

After lunch I recommend you spend a couple of hours in my favourite museum, the National Museum of Scotland . Here you’ll have the opportunity to see ancient Pictish carvings , the Cramond Lioness [a rare Roman sculpture that was found in Edinburgh] and the Lewis Chess pieces – one of the best archaeological discoveries in Scotland.

If you still have some time before dinner I recommend walking up Calton Hill for magnificent views on the city.

4 days in Scotland edinburgh castle in spring

Edinburgh Castle, in spring!

Where to eat in Edinburgh

For breakfast I recommend The City Cafe.  My favourite lunch spots include Black Medicine  and Black Ivy . There is a fabulous juice bar and cafe on Victoria Street called Hula that I recommend either for lunch or a healthy snack.

For afternoon tea I recommend The Witchery by The Castle or  Mimi’s Bakehouse .

For an atmospheric dinner I recommend The Witchery by The Castle [fine dining- reservations required], the Caley Picture House [a Wetherspoons brand in a huge old picture theatre- cheap food and drinks!] or Howies on Victoria Street.

Day 2: Take a day trip to Falkirk

The Kelpies

  • Callendar House

On the second day of your 4 day trip to Scotland, you’ll ride the train from Edinburgh to Falkirk. From here you’ll catch a bus to The Kelpies , the world’s largest equine sculptures. There is a lovely gift shop and a cafe next to the sculptures.

Afterwards you’ll catch the bus again to Callendar House , a mansion in Falkirk set in beautiful grounds with an incredible history. Entry is free and there is a cafe upstairs.

Part of Antonine’s Wall is also located within the grounds. Antonine’s Wall was built after Hadrian’s Wall as a barrier to raiding Caledonian tribes. Ask the people at the information desk to point you in its direction- the wall isn’t actually a wall anymore, but a ditch.

You’ll then catch the bus back to the Falkirk train station, and ride the train back to Edinburgh.

4 day scotland itinerary

Day 3: Drink whisky and be merry in Glasgow

  • Visit a whisky distillery
  • See Glasgow street art
  • Glasgow Cathedral
  • Experience the colourful nightlife in Glasgow

On day three of my 4 day Scotland itinerary you’ll catch the train from Edinburgh to Glasgow Central or Glasgow Queen Street [whichever is closest to your accommodation].

My first visit to Glasgow didn’t go all that well, you can read my post about why I didn’t like Glasgow but why I love it now. I’ve revised my itinerary for this day to show you some of the best parts of Glasgow that I missed on my first visit.

Read More: 50 Travel Tips for Scotland

After dropping your luggage off you’ll then catch a taxi or an Uber to Auchentoshan Distillery for a tour of the single malt whisky distillery. They have a 60 minute tour for just £12, which includes a tasting, or a 90 minute tour with 4 tastings for £35.

You’ll make your way back to the city centre for lunch, and then explore Glasgow on foot. The walk to Glasgow Cathedral takes under 30 minutes, and there is lots of street art to see along the way on the Glasgow City Mural Trail .

You can find a map of the street art here .

After exploring the beautiful cathedral, be sure to go for a wander through the Glasgow Necropolis , an old Victorian cemetery, located just behind the cathedral.

You’ll wander back into the city centre to experience one of my favourite things about Glasgow: it’s vibrant nightlife. Have some dinner and sample a few of the pubs and fantastic cocktail bars the city has to offer. I love Revolution on Mitchell Street  for a meal and cocktails.

Just don’t get too carried away because you’ve got a big day ahead of you tomorrow!

Day 4: Go on a road trip to Glencoe

  • Loch Lomond
  • Shopping in Luss
  • Drive through Glen Coe
  • Hike Glencoe Lochan
  • Falls of Falloch

On the final day of your 4 days in Scotland you’ll hire a car for a road trip to Glencoe in the Scottish Highlands . Today you’ll get a taste of one of the most dramatic parts of the Scottish Highlands as you drive through Glen Coe !

You’ll pick up your rental car from Glasgow [I recommend hiring a car from Auto Europe ] and drive to Luss , a wee village on the banks of Loch Lomond .

Stretch your legs and take a stroll to admire Scotland’s largest loch; there are also some cute gift shops in Luss where you can pick up unique Scottish gifts.

You’ll continue on, passing The Green Welly Stop in Tyndrum. The Haggis loves pointing out the giant green gumboot painted on the building every time we drive past. It’s a good snack stop!

After you pass through Tyndrum the scenery will begin to open up and you’ll be greeted by mountains and forest.

Before long you’ll spot Buachaille Etive Mòr [commonly called ‘The Buachaille’] which is one of Glen Coe’s most dramatic mountains. Be sure to look out for the iconic ‘ Wee White House ‘ on your left; photographs of this building with the iconic backdrop of Buachaille Etive Mòr grace many biscuit tins and Scotland guidebooks. There is parking so you can pull over to take a snap yourself.

As you continue on you’ll pass The Three Sisters , three beautiful mountain peaks. Pull into the Three Sisters Car Park to take in the three peaks and visualise The Lost Valley nestled between two of the sisters. If you had more time you could hike to the valley, however you’ll continue on to Glencoe village for something to eat.

I recommend having lunch at the Clachaig Inn , one of the best pubs in Scotland , which is nestled in the heart of Glencoe, surrounded by magnificent views of the mountains.

You’ll then have another chance to stretch your legs when you go for a walk around Glencoe Lochan . The lochan is surrounded by peaceful woodland and easy waymarked trails. It was landscaped to look like the Canadian Rockies, and the lochan looks like a miniature Lake Louise!

On your way back to Glasgow I recommend visiting the Falls of Falloch before stopping for dinner at The Drovers Inn , a traditional Scottish hotel with a restaurant and pub that was established in 1705.

With just 4 days in Scotland you can see plenty; my 4 day Scotland itinerary is a busy one, however on my first trip to Scotland I was keen to experience as much as possible and I had zero regrets.

There is so much more in Scotland to see, but hopefully this gives you a taste and leaves you wanting to come back explore more of this amazing country!

A gentle stroll along any part of this historic street will take you in the footsteps of Robert Burns , Sir Walter Scott and a host of colourful Scottish characters.

The highlight is Edinburgh Castle which sits on a crag and provides a striking backdrop to Edinburgh's skyline.

During your visit discover dramatic tales of siege, warfare, dark deeds and intrigue. Visit the Royal Apartments to view the stunning Scottish Crown Jewels  then see Mons Meg (a giant cannon) and St Margaret's Chapel, the oldest building in Edinburgh.

There are also spectacular views of Edinburgh to enjoy from the battlements.

A short stroll from the castle, you'll find the popular Scotch Whisky Experience . It tells the story of Scotland's national drink and the traditions behind whisky making.

Edinburgh has lots of quality restaurants to choose from, with many specialising in Scottish fish and seafood . Look out for popular "pre-theatre" menus to enjoy good food at significant savings if you eat early.

Overnight: Motel One, Edinburgh or similar (2 nights)

Day 2 - Loch Ness and the Highlands Excursion

The Loch Ness Monster - fact or fiction? We'll find out on this superb tour through the glorious Scottish Highlands.

From Edinburgh, our journey northwards starts with a drive to Stirling, with its dramatically sited castle overlooking the surrounding countryside.

The journey continues through Rob Roy Macgregor Country to reach desolate Rannoch Moor, one of the last true wildernesses in Europe.

Haunting Glen Coe is next. Known as the "Glen of Weeping", due to the infamous massacre of 1692. Forty of the resident MacDonald clan were massacred in cold blood by the Campbells for not forswearing the Jacobite cause. They say you can still hear their cries!

We'll spend time at Loch Ness, where you can experience a monster-spotting cruise on the loch or simply enjoy a relaxing break.

Tour through the picturesque Cairngorms National Park  then, after travelling through the Grampian Mountains, make a stop in Pitlochry for refreshments.

We'll return to Edinburgh by early evening after a fantastic day of discovery and maybe, just maybe………..

There are dark tales to be told of executions and two of Edinburgh's most infamous citizens, Burke and Hare, as you tour through the Grassmarket .

Hear the tale of Greyfriar's Bobby and see the statue of the little Skye terrier after touring the new Quartermile area.

At the foot of the Royal Mile sits the iconic Scottish Parliament building and the Palace of Holyroodhouse , HM The King's official residence in Scotland.

Finally, there are beautiful views of Arthurs Seat and Holyrood Park to enjoy as we make our way back to the city centre.

If you fancy some retail therapy, you'll find the designer label shopping aplenty in fashionable George Street whilst grand Princes Street provides shopping with unique views.

Try Friendly Stockbridge or Victoria Street, just off the Royal Mile if you're looking for antiques or a quirky souvenir.

Customer Reviews Overall Rating:

The itinerary was great, I'm amazed at all we SAW! Our guide Paul was almost apologetic about the amount of driving involved, we went to Loch Ness, but it didn't feel long. In fact the 12 hours flew by, as the scenery was breathtaking and we had lots of stops to break up the driving. Paul also kindly added a few extra for our comfort and to be absolutely sure we saw all that we possibly could. And we did!! Prepare to have your jaw drop when you view the stunning highland scenery. Also no stop felt rushed, which on other bus tours we took, was not the case.

Great tour. Great accommodation. Excellent support. Well organised and very clear instructions. I thoroughly recommend this company Scottish Tours.

Really well structured and organised bus tour. Wonderful experience on a class, well presented coach. Joe the guide was both informative and a good laugh. I will definitely do it again in the future.

4-5 days in Scotland: the best itinerary

Let’s start your 4-5 day trip to Scotland with a visit to Edinburgh, the capital.

To visit Edinburgh in 2 days , the best is to devote one day to each part of the city.

  • On your first day , you will visit Old Town , the medieval part of the city
  • On your second day , you will discover New Town , the contemporary part of Edinburgh.

Old Town , the historic center of Edinburgh, stretches mainly around the Royal Mile : this famous streets runs from Edinburgh Castle down to the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

You can start by visiting the city’s iconic landmark, Edinburgh Castle . It stands at the top of an ancient volcano and dominates the town.

As it’s the most touristic monument in Scotland, you should really book your tickets in advance here. It will save you a lot of time!

Let’s face it: during your short 4 or 5 days stay in Scotland, it’s better to spend your time visiting rather than queuing for hours to get an entrance ticket 😅.

During your visit, you will be able to discover both the inside and outside of the castle.

The famous Crown Jewels , the War Museum and the beautiful gardens are a must see. From the castle grounds, you will also be able to enjoy one of the best views of Edinburgh .

Edinburgh Castle

After your visit to the castle, you can head to one of the oldest tourist attractions of Edinburgh: the Camera Obscura and World of Illusions .

This original and unusual museum is a great place to visit if you’re traveling with your family. There, you will discover numerous optical illusions as well as a 360° animated panorama of the city.

You can find more information about the Camera Obscura on the official website. To avoid queuing at the entrance, you should also buy your tickets in advance by clicking here.

On the way out, continue down the Royal Mile, wander in the alleys of the old town and admire the medieval architecture.

Here are the main monuments to see on the Royal Mile of Edinburgh:

  • The Saint Gilles Cathedral , the oldest Gothic religious building in the city
  • Canongate Kirk , a quiet small church
  • The Real Mary King’s Close , to visit the underground streets and houses
  • Dunbar’s Close Garden , a small, quiet and charming garden
  • White Horse Close , a picturesque group of houses
  • Scottish Parliament House , the seat of the Scottish Parliament

If you love history and want to learn more about Edinburgh , you should definitely visit the 2 following museums:

  • The Museum of Edinburgh
  • “The people’s Story” Museum: This interesting museum will allow you to learn more about the working-class people of Edinburgh from the 18th century to the present day.

They are both located near the Royal Mile and are free of charge .

After all these visits, you will deserve a sweet break 😄.

You can for example go to Clarinda’s Tearoom , one of the best tea rooms in the city: British atmosphere guaranteed with flower tablecloths and porcelain dishes! Address : 69 Canongate Street, almost at the end of the Royal Mile.

It’s now time to visit the city’s second most popular tourist attraction: The Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Once the residence of Mary Stuart and now one of the queen’s second home, you will for sure love discovering its art galleries, state apartments, gardens , and the abbey ruins.

Here also, the best way to save time is to buy your tickets for the palace in advance by clicking here.

At the end of your visit, you can climb up Arthur’s Seat hill located nearby . The view over Edinburgh from the top of this ancient volcano is breathtaking!

At nightfall, to end this first day in Edinburgh with a typically Scottish visit, you can go Greyfriars cemetery. It’s reputed to be one of the most haunted in the world!

To get there, the best is to join one of the guided tours organized every evening. It needs to be booked here.

If you want to learn everything about Edinburgh’s Old Town , the best is to opt for a guided tour.

During your tour, you will have the chance to learn more about the city’s historical sites such as the Castle, The Palace of Holyroodhouse and the Parliament.

This guided tour of Edinburgh can be booked directly here:

Arthur's seat

For the second day of your 4-5 day itinerary in Scotland , you will discover New Town , the contemporary part of the city.

This district organized around 3 main streets (Princes Street, Queen Street and Georges Street) is characterized by large squares and typical Georgian architecture .

Here are the best places to see in New Town, Edinburgh:

  • Princes Street Garden: stroll through the alleys and enjoy the beautiful views over the medieval city.
  • Charlotte Square, where the official residence of the Prime Minister is located.
  • Calton Hill: from the hill, you can enjoy a panoramic view over the historic center (Old Town) up to the sea.
  • The Scottish National Portrait Gallery and the Scottish National Gallery , 2 free museums, perfect if you’re an art lover!
  • Dean Village, a former milling village. You can reach it in 15 minutes on foot from the center of Edinburgh.
  • The Royal Botanical Gardens, among the most beautiful in the world.

At the end of the day , if you’re up for more ghost stories and haunted places after visiting Greyfriars Cemetery, you should go on a Ghost Tour . Hop on a black double-decker bus and tour the the creepiest places of the city, where torture and executions took place. It needs to be booked here!

To learn more about the best things to do in Edinburgh, you should read my detailed article: Edinburgh: the definitve guide.

For the second part of your 4 or 5 days trip to Scotland, you will spend 2 days to visit the Highlands.

For this road trip, you will need to rent a car (unless you came to Scotland with your own of course!). Personally, I always use Rentalcars.com website , for several reasons:

  • You can easily compare all the car rental agencies prices at a given location
  • You can get their “full protection” insurance. It’s the best way to be fully refunded in case of an accident or theft. Tested and approved, they have already refunded me more than 1300 euros!
  • You can modify or cancel your booking free of charge.

If you know your travel dates, your should really compare the rates and rent your car as soon as possible. It’s the best way to get the best price (car rental prices only go up with time).

Voyage Tips - Advice If you don’t want to rent a car, the other solution is to opt for day trips from Edinburgh.

The big advantage is that you won’t have to take care of anything! Your guide and driver will take care of everything 😊.

To make it even easier for you, I have selected the best day trips from Edinburgh. Simply click on the orange links below to book them and for more information:

  • From Edinburgh – Loch Ness, Glen Coe and Highlands: spend the day in the countryside to admire the scenery of Loch Ness and the Highlands. A Loch Ness cruise is also included!
  • Edinburgh – Visit Loch Lomond, the Trossachs and Stirling Castle: Visit Stirling, pass by Doune Castle, walk through the Trossachs Park and finish the day with a cruise on Loch Lomond.
  • From Edinburgh – 1 day tour of the Highlands, Stirling Castle and whisky: a day trip by minibus with a visit to Stirling, a tour of the Trossachs Park and a visit to a whisky distillery, including of course a whisky tasting. If you are not a whisky lover, you can choose to visit Doune Castle instead.
  • Highlands tour with the Hogwarts Express train! – The best tour for Harry Potter fans 😉
  • Excursion to discover the lakes and castles of Scotland: visit in small groups (maximum 16 persons) of Doune castle and Argyl castle, stop in front of Stirling and Kilchurn castle. You will also pass by Callander, Loch Luibnaig, Loch Fyne and Loch Lomond.
  • From Edinburgh – St Andrew’s and the fishing village of Fife: visit the historic and picturesque villages of the kingdom of Fife and the medieval town of St Andrews where Scotland’s oldest university is located. Discover Falkland, one of the most beautiful villages in the country.
  • From Edinburgh – Outlander-themed excursion: visit the filming locations of the Outlander TV show, adapted from the novels written by Diana Gabaldon.
  • From Edinburgh: Rosslyn Chapel and Scottish Borders: day trip to discover the Rosslyn Chapel (a filming location of The Da Vinci Code movie) and the remarkable Melrose Abbey founded by the Cistercians.

If you have chosen the road trip option:

Once you have picked up your car, head for Glencoe , about 3 hours drive from Edinburgh .

The village is the starting point for many hikes in the Highlands. There are hikes available for everyone, so you can just choose the one that suits you the best depending on its length and difficulty.

The easiest are the Lochan Trails: these short forest walks take about 1 hour to complete.

If you’re up for a longer hike, the Pap of Glencoe , is clearly the best choice! This 4 hours round trip hike will take you to the top of the mountain of the same name. The view from the summit is just superb!

And if you’re looking for something in between, the Lost valley hike is quite nice too. It takes around 3 hours round trip.

When you will arrive, you should ask at Glencoe Visitor Centre for more information about the various hiking trails available.

Spend the night towards Fort Williams, 25 minutes from Glencoe.

Glencoe Scotland

On the next day, you will go to one of Scotland’s most famous places: the Loch Ness!

The Loch (the second largest in the country) is located between Inverness and Fort Augustus , an hour and a half drive from Fort William.

In the morning, you will thus head to Fort Augustus, the starting point of Loch Ness cruises.

During your cruise, you can try to catch a glimpse of Nessie, the famous monster!

After the boat trip and a good lunch break, head to the village of Drumnadrochit (40 minutes by car). Here, you can visit Urquhart Castle , a medieval castle built on the banks of the Loch.

To combine the 2 best things to do at Loch Ness (the cruise and the visit to Urquhart Castle), you should opt for a combined tour: it’s only €25 per person! It includes a 1 hour boat trip on Loch Ness and the visit to the castle. You need to book it in advance here.

If you’re not too tired and have some time left, you can then go to Inverness , the capital of the Highlands. Its castle is worth a visit.

On your way back, you can make a stop in Dores , a cute village offering a beautiful view of Loch Ness.

Return to Fort William for a second night in the Highlands.

For more information about the Highlands, you should read my detailed article: The 20 best things to do in the Highlands

Here is another option for your second day in the Highlands:

Instead of going to Loch Ness, you can go to Glenfinnan , 30 minutes from Fort William. The place is especially famous for it 21 arch viaduct that has been featured in “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” movie!

Every morning around 10:30 and in the afternoon around 15:00 , you can see the Jacobite Express steam train (Hogwarts Express’s real name) passing by. A great moment for all Harry Potter fans 😄.

  • Fort William Backpackers: Located in the center of Fort William. Bed in a dormitory from 22€. Strong points: the atmosphere, the welcome, the location. The best choice for backpackers!
  • Ben Nevis Hotel & Leisure Club: Located 1.5 km from Fort William. Scottish style double room starting at 100€/night with breakfast included. Strong points: indoor heated swimming pool, the free parking, the breakfast.
  • Nevis Bank Inn: Located on the banks of Nevis river, 10 minutes away from Fort William’s town center. Large double room from 190€, breakfast included. Strong points: pleasant staff, very clean and a good restaurant.
  • Inverlochy Castle Hotel: 5-star hotel located 6 km away from Fort William. The place is actually a small castle that offers double rooms with a view on the gardens and the peak of Glen Nevis. Prices start at 550€ breakfast included. Strong points: the extraordinary setting, the amazing breakfast and the wonderful staff. The best choice for a luxury trip to the Highlands!

Inverlochy Castle Hotel

3) Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park (1 day )

That’s already the fifth day of your 4 or 5 day Scotland tour!

Today you will have to think about getting closer to Edinburgh. The best is thus to go to Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park . Both the national park and the Loch are the largest in the country.

The place is really beautiful, and you will probably see a few sheeps during this day!

On your way through Trossachs Park, you’ll first reach Tarbet (1 hour 40 minutes from Fort William), where you can take a cruise on loch Lomond.

Then continue to Luss (southwards), a village known for its view of the Loch, and pass through Balloch . It is a 15 minute drive between the two.

In the afternoon , you should really hike to the top of Conic Hill (about 3 hours round trip). It offers panoramic views over Loch Lomond and the entire east coast, it’s really superb!

Before heading back to Edinburgh, pass by Doune Castle , and don’t forget to make a stop to visit Stirling Castle , one of the largest in Scotland. You should buy your skip the line tickets here.

From Stirling you will still have to drive for around 1h to reach Edinburgh.

If you’re planning only 4 days in Scotland , you can spend 1 day in the Highlands instead of 2.

Or, if you don’t want to drive so much , you can also spend 2 full days at Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park , and don’t go to the Highlands.

In addition to the cruise and the Conic Hill hike I talked about, there are many others hikes to do there, so you will for sure find something to do! The advantage is that Loch Lomond is only 1h45 from Edinburgh, whereas the Highlands are 3 hours away from the capital.

As I suggested a bit earlier in this guide, you can also stay in Edinburgh for the 4 days and do day trips. The list of the best ones is just here (click here)

Scotland Itinerary: The Perfect Three Day Weekend in Edinburgh

The perfect Scotland Itinerary, by travel blogger What The Fab

During my Eurotrip, Omied, my sister Hanae, and I did a three-day weekend trip from London to Scotland. After doing a bit of research, we decided that as first-timers in Scotland with just a few days to explore, Edinburgh would make the most sense over Glasgow.

We absolutely loved Edinburgh post-London for a different side of Great Britain’s old-world charm, and we packed quite a bit of exploring into a few days. Scotland is so beautiful and completely exceeded our expectations!

If you’re planning a trip to Scotland, here’s our complete three-day Scotland itinerary to inspire you. *cue the Loch Lomond song* ?

Where to stay in Edinburgh:

We stayed at the Sheraton Grand in Edinburgh. We had a view of the castle, the rooms were cute, and it was centrally located.

3 Day Scotland Itinerary

Scotland itinerary: day 1  .

scotland tour from london 4 days

Travel to Edinburgh:

Edinburgh is perfect for a 3 – 4 day trip from London. You can drive there, but it would take about 7 hours.

It’s way easier to book a train . We took Virgin Trains from London to Edinburgh (yes, Virgin has trains!), and it took about 4 hours and 45 minutes (much faster than driving).

But when you compare that with the travel time of flying, getting to and from the airport, security, etc. taking public transport is just so much more relaxing and convenient, so definitely look into a London to Scotland train !

scotland tour from london 4 days

Lunch at Dishoom:

When I was in London I became obsessed with the Indian restaurant Dishoom . I wanted to make sure Omied and my sister got to try it while they were in town, but it was hard to find reservations at the London locations.

So when I saw they had an Edinburgh restaurant I was so excited! They have the most delicious Indian dishes and drinks, and I love that the owners donate a percentage of profit to kids in schools in India who can’t afford lunch.

The perfect Scotland Itinerary, by travel blogger What The Fab

Edinburgh Castle:

It’s pretty incredible to just be walking around Edinburgh and look up and see this old castle up on a hill.

Give yourself a couple of hours to check out the castle, walk around the grounds, and see the notable areas like the Crown Jewels and old prison.

Scotland Itinerary

The Kitchin:

For dinner, we went to Edinburgh’s Michelin star restaurant, The Kitchin . We had a delicious, if not extremely rich and decadent meal there and really enjoyed it.

It was my sister’s first time at a Michelin star restaurant and I think she’s hooked now. If you’re looking for a less expensive meal, Odin was recommended to us as a good seafood restaurant.

Scotland Itinerary: Day 2

Scotland Itinerary

Scotland Highlands Tour:

If you’re visiting Scotland, you HAVE to do a tour of the Highlands ! The landscape is so beautiful and unique.

Since we had a limited amount of time in Scotland, a day trip tour was perfect because we were able to sit back and relax while the guide took us to all the most picturesque spots.

This was a much better idea than a rental car and making our own Scotland road trip plus the road trip itinerary. We did the Loch Ness, Glen Coe & the Highlands tour which included a boat ride on Loch Ness.

While we didn’t spot Nessie, it was really surreal to be out on that famous lake up at Inverness. Along the way, we stopped for photos at some really beautiful places, including Ben Nevis.

And we got to see Hairy Coos!! They’re these adorable hairy cows with big horns that I was really hoping we’d see on our trip. We spotted some and were able to pull over and take pictures with them.

I was so happy. Our tour guide was great, and as he was driving he entertained us with tons of stories about Scotland and its history.

It was a very long day trip (12 hours), but it was awesome to be able to see so much of Scotland and the beautiful Highlands.

Plus it was nice to be able to take a quick power nap in between sights and not have to worry about driving!

Scotland Itinerary

Deacon Brodie’s Tavern:

After our Scottish Highlands tour, we wanted to get some pub food for dinner. We were told that pretty much any of the spots in Old Town would have great pub food.

Deacon Brodie’s was one of many recommendations. We had yummy fish and chips and Scotch eggs (omg, I freaking love Scotch eggs!) and ciders and it hit the spot.

Pub hopping:

After dinner, we went pub hopping. You can find fun spots just by walking around, but Whistle Binkies and The Castle Arms were a couple of memorable spots that we went to.

Whistle Binkies had live music, a local rock band called The New Schmoo. We felt like we really got a fun Scottish experience there—big Scottish dudes wearing kilts moshing to The New Schmoo.

Scotland Itinerary: Day 3

Marks & spencer:.

We stopped here to pick up picnic things for our hike, and we ended up having brunch here as well in their café.

Scotland Itinerary

Arthur’s Seat:

This is a beautiful hike up a small mountain in Edinburgh, and on a clear day, it has beautiful views of the city. It’s fairly steep and it took us about an hour to get to the top because we were stopping to take pictures.

It was crazy windy up at the top, so we found a more sheltered spot on our descent to stop and enjoy our picnic.

Scotland Itinerary

Scotch Whisky Experience:

Omied had been dying to go to the Scotch Whisky Experience ever since two of our friends went there last year and raved about it. I’m not a huge whiskey drinker but it was still really fun.

They start you off in this silly little ride where you get in a “barrel” and learn about how whiskey is made. After that, you get a tour where you learn how to taste whiskey.

The best part was a room that you’re brought into that holds over 3,000 unopened bottles of aged whiskey. At the end of the tour, you end up in their whiskey bar where you can drink more whiskey.

I think I’ve just typed whiskey approximately twenty times. Whiskey.

Scotland Itinerary

We did a little souvenir shopping in New Town (Edinburgh is divided into the Old Town up where the castle is, and the New Town where the central area is).

I got some pretty cashmere scarves…and a tiny little hairy coo that now sits on my desk and makes me smile every day because I’m now obsessed with hairy coos.

So that was our three-day perfect Scotland itinerary! We ended up taking the Caledonian Sleeper Train overnight back to London…not by choice but because we missed our evening train.

It was definitely an experience. If you’re looking to save time on your trip and can sleep on a train (you can book a teeny tiny room with a bunk bed in it), this might be the perfect option for you.

We loved Scotland and we’re already talking about how we’d love to come back someday and visit The Isle of Skye !

Since my trip was only three days, I didn’t get the chance to see some of the other tourist attractions.

If you find yourself in Scotland for more than three days, I would highly recommend these spots: Eilean Donan Castle , Fort William , or the Jacobite Steam Train (otherwise known as the Harry Potter Hogwarts train for all you Harry Potter fans).

If you enjoy the outdoors, I would recommend these spots: Cairngorms National Park , Trossachs National Park , and Loch Lomond  which is located in Trossachs.

A one day itinerary is not enough to tour Scotland, especially if you’re trying to make it out for a few day trips. Plus there are just so many fun things to do in Edinburgh . Three days to one week would be the ideal amount of time to spend in this historic and beautiful place.

If you’re torn between visiting Scotland or Ireland, this post about Scotland vs. Ireland offers some great insight on the two countries.

And check out this guide to Glasgow in winter if you decide to make a stop there while you’re in Scotland.

Definitely tag me on Insta @ wtfab if you decide to do some Scotland travel.

Some of the most beautiful places in Scotland include National Parks like Cairngorms National Park and Trossachs National Park. The Isle of Skye, Eilean Donan Castle, and Fort Williams are also beautiful places in Scotland.

The best way to get around Scotland is by renting a car, taking public transportation via train or bus.

The best time to visit Scotland is during the Summer since it is the warmest time of year, this is between the months of June to August. The fall season is also a nice time to visit which is between the months of September to October.

On arrival in Edinburgh the day begins with a two hour fully guided coach tour.  Discover the adventure and misfortune of Scotland’s tragic queen, Mary Queen of Scots, as we start our tour at Holyrood Palace.  This 900 year old Palace was built on the orders of King David after an encounter with a mythical white Stag, and remains today as the official residence of the British monarchy in Scotland.

After a brief stop at the Palace it’s on to one of Edinburgh’s highest points in Holyrood Park before continuing our tour of the ‘Old Town’. The tour will include some of the cities most famous landmarks including Edinburgh Castle, National Museum of Scotland, Grassmarket, Greyfriars Bobby and the Elephant House coffee house where J.K.Rowling first penned Harry Potter.

We depart the Old Town and continue towards the Georgian New Town, home to some of the world’s most famous writers, scholars and inventors.  The Scots have long been at the forefront of innovation and discovery from Alexander Fleming’s discovery of penicillin to John Logie Baird’s invention of television; James Simpson and chloroform to Alexander Bell and the telephone.  Where would we be today without Scottish scientists and inventors?  In the fictional world many characters would not exist were it not for authors born and raised in Edinburgh’s New town including Harry Potter, Long John Silver, Jekyll & Hyde, Peter Pan and Sherlock Holmes.

After a guided drive through the elegant 18th century squares and terraces of the New Town we transfer you to your nearby accommodation, a chance to have a late lunch and visit some of the attractions or sites your guide will have talked about on the tour.  Your tour manager will remain available to provide local information, help and advice.

Optional Ghosts and Ghouls evening tour – 20.00pm

A spine tingling evening with ghoulish tales of torture and witchcraft as you learn of Edinburgh’s ghostly past!  The guided tour takes place in medieval closes and the haunted Blair Street Underground vaults. Included in the tour is a shot of Dewar’s super Scotch Whisky to keep you warm on this chilling tour!!

Rest of the evening free to enjoy Edinburgh’s atmospheric old inns to sample some local ales and whisky, joined by the tour guide.  A great opportunity for you to get to know some other fellow group members on the tour.

Day 2 - Loch Ness and Inverness

Enjoy a full free day in Edinburgh to visit one of the many amazing attractions on offer.  Time to explore the Royal Mile, visit the Castle, enter Holyrood Palace or one of the many free museums and galleries in the city.

Loch Ness and Scottish Highlands Upgrade – £59.  Prepare to see some amazing scenery on this fully guided day trip, with entry included to the stunning Urquhart Castle on the banks of Loch Ness. Leave city life behind as you head into a land of mountains, lakes (lochs), beauty, mystery and legend!

Depart Edinburgh and travel along the Forth Valley towards Stirling, passing the famous battle site of Bannockburn (1314) and into William Wallace (Braveheart) country.  See Stirling Castle and the National Wallace Monument, where the mighty hero defeated the English forces of King Edward I at Stirling Bridge in 1297.

Entering the Trossachs National Park we make our official entrance into the Highlands and the land of the outlaw Rob Roy.  After crossing The Rannoch Moor, one of Europe’s most sparsely populated areas, we come across the ‘weeping’ Glen Coe.  Brace yourselves for the treacherous tale of Highland rivalries, as the MacDonald clan were betrayed and brutally slaughtered by their bitter enemies, the Campbells.

After a stop for lunch with Scottish specialities Haggis or even Highland Whisky, we enter the Great Glen and follow the Caledonian Canal in the shadow of Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain.  The Great Glen is one of the most picturesque parts of the British Isles, filled with perfectly reflecting waters of Loch Lochy, Loch Oich and the most famous of all, Loch Ness.  We drive along the entire 23 miles (37km) of Loch Ness as your guide tells you tales of sightings and encounters of this elusive beast.

We stop at the widest point of Loch Ness for an hour to explore Urquhart Castle with entry included.  A castle of history and mystery, and the place where the highest numbers of sightings of the Loch Ness Monster have been made.  From here you will have the option of taking a boat cruise on the Loch (entry extra, payable on the day), you will never get a better chance to Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster!

After the Castle we continue to our northernmost point at Inverness, the Capital of the Highlands, before turning south past the site of the Battle of Culloden and journey through the Cairngorms and our return to Edinburgh.

Please note: because of the long distances this particular excursion entails (well over 500km a day), which may not make the best suited day tour for infants younger than 3 years of age.

Day 3 - Calton Hill and Edinburgh Castle

Join your tour manager for a morning walk up Calton Hill for views of the City of Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth.  From here you can see the 171 metre tower in honour of the great Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson and his victories over Napoleon Bonaparte.  Next to the tower is the National Monument of Scotland which commemorates Scottish soldiers and sailors who died during the Napoleonic wars.  From here it is clear to see why many refer to Edinburgh as ‘the Athens of the North.’

From Calton Hill the tour manager will accompany you to Edinburgh Castle (entry extra), an impenetrable fortress which has stood overlooking the city for over 1000 years.  Learn about the Scottish Monarchy, Scottish heroes such as William Wallace or Robert the Bruce and see the Crown jewels of Scotland.

Whisky Tasting upgrade – £22 – ( only adults over 18s).  A transfer and tour of Glenkinchie whisky distillery, the closest to Edinburgh.  After experiencing the detailed and highly skilled process of making a bottle of ‘Scotch’ you will have the chance to sample some of the whiskies made here.  If you select this day trip you will be dropped back in Edinburgh after the tour in time for the coach departure transfer to the train station.

Our departure transfer coach will collect you from the accommodation at 13:30pm for the transfer to Edinburgh Waverley station, train departing at 14:51pm for the return journey to London Kings Cross. Arrival time in London Kings Cross is shortly after 20:30pm.

Where does the trip depart from?

Each UK trip will have a dedicated pick up point in central London.  Shorter duration trips will normally depart from Victoria Coach Station, with longer duration trips leaving from the London Reception Centre, near to Waterloo train station.  Departure points will be confirmed before booking a tour.

Can I get picked up from my hotel?

Pick up from hotels is not possible.  You will need to make your own way to the departure point.  However some tours do have a designated hotel departure, which you can stay in prior to the trip.  Please ask at time of booking for departure points and we can direct you to local hotels.

Are entrance fees included?

Entrance fees are included where specified on the itinerary.

Can I pay in dollars?

All tours are quoted and charged in pounds sterling, but you can pay using your local card and currency.  We will debit the card in pounds sterling and your bank will use their exchange rate at that time to deduct the amount in your local currency.

What time does the trip leave and return?

Departure times will vary depending on the itinerary.  European tours departing from London will usually leave between 05.00am and 07.00am.  Multi day UK tours will leave between 06.00am and 07:30am.  Day trips will depart between 07.00am and 09.00am.  European and worldwide tours that start in an overseas city will have a welcome reception on day one of the tour which is usually around 18.00pm.

A definite departure is guaranteed to operate for that given departure date.  A trip that is not yet designated a definite departure is not yet guaranteed to operate based on current booking numbers.  If a trip and departure date you are interested in is not yet definite, do not let this discourage you from booking.  The more paid passengers received, the odds of the trip operating increase.  In the slim case that the operator withdraw a trip you are booked on due to a lack of numbers, you are entitled to a full refund of any funds already paid towards the tour, or if flexible with your time, we can move you onto another departure.

Who travels on these tours, who else is booked?

Whether you’re looking for bank holiday breaks or you just want a couple extra days to travel, these 4-day tours and excursions will allow you check off some new destinations from your bucket list.

4-Day Trips from London

From the English countryside to the Scottish Highlands, my list of 4-day trips from London covers a diverse range of places. It includes spots in Wales, Northern Ireland, and continental Europe, too.

Whether you’re passionate about city breaks, coastal retreats, bucolic landscapes, or country villages, there’s a 4-day trip from London that will satisfy your wanderlust and suit your travel style.

You can do these as independent trips or as guided tours. I’ve done many of them with Rabbie’s , a company offering small-group tours throughout the UK and Europe.

They provide the driver and you choose what you want to do and where you want to stay. It’s the perfect balance between a guided tour and an independent trip. You can see their tours here .

Worm's Head, Wales

1. Edinburgh

I’ll start my list of 4-day trips from London with Edinburgh. This city in Scotland is hard to beat when it comes to aesthetics and historic charm.

From the castle on the hill to the Royal Mile and the storybook houses in Dean Village, Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities in the UK .

This is the perfect 4-day trip to Scotland from London. It’s enough time to explore the highlights of the city and the best secret places in Edinburgh while you’re visiting. My itinerary for 4 days in Edinburgh can show you more.

Edinburgh View

You’ll also have time to take a day trip from Edinburgh if you want to explore the surrounding area. Places like Rosslyn Chapel, the Scottish Borders , Culross, Falkland , North Berwick , Dunbar , and St Andrews are easy excursions from the city.

You can get to Edinburgh from London by train or flight. It takes around 4.5 hours all-in either way, so it’s up to you how you prefer to travel to the Scottish capital.

If this appeals, you can book a hotel in Edinburgh here . My top pick for a place to stay is The George . It’s in a central location on George Street near St Andrew Square. You can book a room here .

Victoria Street, Edinburgh

2. Cornwall

Next on my list of 4-day trips from London is Cornwall . There are plenty of things to do and see in this part of the UK, from coastal walks to big beaches and historic sites.

Whether you choose to visit St Ives with its beaches and world-class art museums, surf-friendly Newquay, or foodie Padstow, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to 4-day tours of Britain here.

There are also highlights like St Michael’s Mount and unique attractions like the Eden Project. The former is a tidal island with a castle in Mount’s Bay, and the latter is a visitor attraction with huge biomes in a reclaimed clay pit.

Cornwall beach

And that’s to say nothing of Land’s End, the westernmost point in mainland England. There’s plenty of rugged coastal scenery to admire here.

If you want to visit, you can get to Cornwall by train (I took the overnight train once and I loved it), flight, or car. Just don’t underestimate how far it is from London.

If that all appeals, you can book a place to stay in Cornwall here . My favorite town to base myself in is St Ives. You can book accommodation in St Ives here .

Cottages in St Ives, Cornwall

3. Belfast and the Causeway Coastal Route

In Northern Ireland, Belfast and the Causeway Coastal Route make for another of the best 4-day trips from London.

Belfast is known for its lively nightlife, friendly locals, and history, and the coast around it is packed with beautiful views and stunning scenery.

The Causeway Coastal Route starts in Belfast and runs north through the nine Glens of Antrim and along the water.

From medieval castles and hanging rope bridges to famous distilleries and Game of Thrones filming locations, there’s a lot to discover along this driving route.

Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge in Northern Ireland

And that’s to say nothing of the Giant’s Causeway, where interlocking basalt columns result in a stunning natural landscape. It’s worth seeing on a 4-day getaway from London.

You can easily fly to Belfast from the UK capital. There are daily flights on multiple airlines, and fares tend to be reasonable if you book well in advance.

If that all sounds good, you can book accommodation in Northern Ireland here . There are lots of good places to stay.

Sculpture in Belfast, Northern Ireland

4. South Wales

Another of the best 4-day trips from London is South Wales. From Cardiff to the Gower Peninsula , Pembrokeshire, and Brecon Beacons National Park, there are lots of fun places to visit here.

Cardiff is home to a fairy-tale castle, the Gower shows off the best of the Welsh coast, Pembrokeshire has some of the most beautiful beaches in the United Kingdom, and Brecon Beacons has great walking paths and waterfalls.

Worm’s Head and Rhossili Beach are two of my favorite places to get outdoors here, Castell Coch is straight out of a storybook, and hiking Pen-y-Fan is a rewarding experience.

View from Pen y Fan

Which is to say nothing of St Davids. This pint-size city in Pembrokeshire is home to the famous 12th-century St Davids Cathedral. It’s one of the most important religious sites in Wales.

If you want more ideas, you can take a look at my guide to weekend breaks in Wales or my itinerary for this part of Wales .

You can get to South Wales by train or car from London. Once in the area, it’s easiest to travel by car. If you need ideas for places to stay, you can see recommendations and book accommodation here .

Welsh Coastline in Pembrokeshire

5. Edinburgh & the Scottish Highlands

Back in Scotland, Edinburgh and the Scottish Highlands are another of my favorite 4-day trips from London. It’s hard to top this part of the UK when it comes to beauty. The hills and glens, lochs and coos all make for a rugged beauty rarely seen away from Scotland.

Add to that hilltop castles, famous monsters (in Loch Ness, anyway), and tragic history, and Edinburgh and the Scottish Highlands are the stuff of legends.

Whether you want to visit the Hebridean islands , the Cairngorms National Park, Aberdeen , Inverness , the Isle of Skye or Glen Coe, there are a lot of options for places to travel in this part of Scotland.

Pap of Glencoe, Scotland

If you need inspiration, you can take a look at my 4-day Scotland itinerary . It will show you how to see both the capital and the highlights of the Highlands in one trip.

You can travel independently or go on a tour. You can see all the Rabbie’s 4-day Scottish Highlands tours here .

Either way, you can book your accommodation here . There are lots of great places to stay in Edinburgh and the Highlands (including fairy-tale castles!).

Cottage on the Isle of Skye, Scotland

6. North Wales

North Wales is another of the top 4-day trips from London. This part of Britain is renowned for its dramatic landscapes, legendary castles , and beautiful coastline.

There’s no shortage of places to visit in North Wales. If you like the outdoors, Snowdonia is popular for hiking, Llandudno is a seaside resort town, and Anglesey has stunning island scenery.

If history and culture are your passions, Caernarfon is home to a huge castle and Portmeirion feels like an Italian village on the Welsh coast (it’s one of the most magical places to visit in the UK ).

Portmeirion, Wales

If you want more inspiration, take a look at my blog post about a road trip in North Wales . It has additional ideas for places to visit in the region.

You can get to North Wales from London by car or train to somewhere like Chester . Once you arrive, it’s easiest to get around by driving.

If this sounds like your kind of trip, you can book accommodation in North Wales here . There’s a range of accommodation on offer here, from hotels to B&Bs and more.

Caernarfon Castle, Wales

7. Isles of Scilly

Next on my list of the best 4-day trips from London are the Isles of Scilly . This archipelago off the coast of Cornwall is one of the most remote places in England .

The islands are a treasure trove of natural and human-made wonders. From white-sand beaches that look like they could be in the Caribbean to harbors dotted with colorful boats, this is the perfect place to get off the beaten path in Britain.

There are five inhabited islands in the Isles of Scilly. St Mary’s is the largest, but it’s also worth visiting Tresco, St Martin’s, St Agnes, and/or Bryher while you’re in this part of the UK.

Boat on St Mary's in the Isles of Scilly

Tresco Abbey Garden is home to enchanted ruined arches, and Bryher has a lone red phone box redolent of a bygone era. These isles are truly some of the most enchanting islands in the UK .

If you want to visit, there are several ways to get here. When I went, I took a combination of a train, bus, and flight from London (it’s easier than it might seem).

If that all sounds good, you can book a hotel here . I stayed at the St. Mary’s Hall Hotel , a townhouse with classic decor and a sense of history. If you want to follow in my footsteps, you can book a room here .

Red Phone Box on Bryher, Isles of Scilly

When it comes to continental European destinations, Paris is one of my favorite 4-day trips from London. This is one of the most popular places to travel from the UK capital, and a lot of my travel planning clients visit on a twin-city trip with London.

The French capital is one of the prettiest cities in Europe , and 4 days in Paris is enough time to see the sights and take in the major cultural highlights. From Paris landmarks to events and exhibitions, you’ll be spoiled for choice.

You can also do some shopping while you’re in the city. Whether you want to go to the grands magasins or the boutiques in the Marais , there’s no shortage of opportunities for retail therapy in the City of Light.

Paris view from Montmartre

If want to, you can take a day trip while you’re here. From Giverny to Chartres, the Loire Valley, and Versailles, there are lots of great options.

You can get to Paris by train or flight from London. Most people choose to go by rail, as it’s easy to get from the heart of London to the heart of Paris quickly.

If this trip appeals, you can see my top picks for accommodation on my guide to the best area to stay in Paris .

Sacre Coeur, Paris

Next on my list of 4-day trips from London is Rome. The Eternal City is one of the best places to visit in Europe , and there’s a lot to do and see in 4 days in Rome .

This place is famous for its ancient ruins. Several days is enough time to see highlights like the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Pantheon.

Rome also has world-class art. Whether you want to browse the Galleria Borghese or walk through the Vatican Museums, there’s no shortage of things to see. The Baroque squares, fountains, and churches around the city are worth visiting, too.

Rome Street

There’s delicious food in Rome as well. It’s worth taking the time to seek out the famous Italian cuisine (and gelato!) the city has to offer.

From seasonal dishes like artichokes to Roman pizza and the four pastas Rome is known for, there’s no shortage of good things to eat.

If you want to, you can also take a day trip while you’re here. Spending 1 day in Naples , the Amalfi Coast, or somewhere else in the region is a fun thing to do.

If this getaway sounds good to you, you can book a place to stay here . I love staying at The Hoxton . This hip hotel is in a local neighborhood and I like its stylish decor, buzzing lobby bar, and guest rooms. You can book a stay here .

Trevi Fountain

10. Barcelona

In Spain, Bareclona is another fun trip from London. This Spanish city is an easy flight from the UK, and there’s a lot you can do in 4 days in Barcelona .

That’s because the city is packed with historic streets, stunning beaches, beautiful museums, and fun restaurants and nightlife.

Barcelona has a bit of everything, and it’s a great place to explore for several days. From Barri Gotic to the Sagrada Familia and Park Guell, it’s a beautiful city.

Montjuic view in Barcelona

Barcelona’s historic streets are easy to walk around, and the metro is helpful for places like Tibidabo that are further afield.

You have enough time to take a day trip while you’re in town, too. Highlights include the rugged seaside area of Costa Brava, mountain areas like Montserrat, urban centers like Girona, historic places like Tarragona, and beach destinations like Sitges.

If this 4-day getaway sounds good to you, you can book a place to stay here . I’ve stayed at Le Meridien Barcelona and I love its central location. You can book a room here .

Roof of Gaudis Casa Batllo in Barcelona, Spain

11. Santorini

Santorini is next on my list of 4-day trips from London. This island hardly needs an introduction. It’s one of the most famous in the Cyclades, with its unique cliffs rising out of an underwater volcanic crater.

Santorini is one of the best Greek islands for a number of reasons. The views over the caldera are spectacular, the whitewashed buildings with blue trim are classic, and the food is amazing.

I’ve traveled to Santorini a number of times, and I’ve always enjoyed visiting Fira (also called Thera or Thira) and Oia, the main towns. My itinerary for 4 days in Santorini will show you both.

Santorini church

Fira is the primary town, and its shops and narrow streets are bustling. It also has both a cable car and a donkey path that transport visitors up from the port below.

Oia is just as beautiful. It’s full of whitewashed houses and blue-domed churches, and it has great restaurants with sea views. Its main street is full of independent shops selling everything from art to books, too.

If this sounds good, you can book a place to stay in Santorini here . I’ve stayed at the Canaves Sunday and loved it. The unique rooms in the caves, the sunset views, and the amazing pool are hard to beat. You can book a room here .

Santorini sunset

I hope you’ve liked reading about these 4-day trips from London, and that you enjoy visiting the ones that appeal to you most. They’re great places to discover, and they make for fun escapes.
