The Best Argentina Ski Resorts in 2024

We spent the entire winter of 2023 in Patagonia and I have to say, it converted me, a previous winter hater, into a snow bunny.

I’m now writing this guide in the midst of a Buenos Aires heat wave, wishing for the snow and dreaming of a hopeful winter Argentina ski holiday.

After failing at skiing multiple times I gave up and took a weekend of private snowboard lessons in Bariloche and absolutely loved it.

But while an unwelcome bout of pneumonia soured my snowboarding plans, I did still visit every ski resort I could as a pedestrian while my husband actually enjoyed the slopes.

This post is a comprehensive guide to the best Argentina ski resorts to make your Argentina ski holiday happen this year, including private ski resorts and backcountry skiing.

With the seasons “swapped” in the southern hemisphere, Argentina ski season starts in June in the deep south and in July further north, so if you’re excited to “ski in the summertime”, let’s get to planning.

The Best Argentina Ski Resorts

Cerro Catedral in Bariloche is the end all be all of Argentina skiing. It is one of the largest South American ski resorts and is in one of the biggest cities inn Patagonia with many activities beyond skiing.

Ask locals where they love to ski in Argentina and you’ll typically hear Cerro Castor in Ushuaia and Chapelco in San Martin de los Andes.

I fell in love with the boutique Cerro Bayo in the quaint village Villa La Angostura .

Adventure lovers will feel right at home cat skiing in Baguales.

Let’s dive into it, here are the best ski resorts in Argentina.

Las Leñas, Mendoza

Las Leñas is the only Argentina ski resort on this list not in Patagonia but is actually one of the top places to ski in South America.

The closest city is Malargüe at 80 kilometers, so you’ll likely be basing yourself right here in Las Leñas, check their many world class hotels or cabins and apartments.

Las Leñas At A Glance:

  • The valley offers a long ski season from June through September (inclusive).
  • Only South America resort to offer night skiing (on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays weather permitting).
  • 30 runs over 7,500 hectares of total ski area
  • 3430 meters/11,253 feet above sea level at summit
  • Best for steep skiing with 1200 meters vertical drop
  • Map of the resort and tracks

Cerro Catedral, Bariloche

Argentina’s largest and most important ski resort is without a doubt Cerro Catedral in Bariloche.

It has the most ski runs and a large resort that would allow you to never even set foot in Bariloche proper if you didn’t want to.

Literally everyone goes to Bariloche in winter from avid international skiers to local families on holiday. It is even THE destination for high school senior graduation trips and you will inevitably see large groups of students in matching rental outerwear, these egresados are iconic in the Bariloche ski landscape.

Because of this, I recommend going in mid-season or low-season if you can. This will give you a lot more time ON the slopes rather than in line for the lifts.

Advanced skiers can take advantage of excellent backcountry skiing in Bariloche with guided hut to hut excursions. When on a snow shoe hike to Refugio Frey I saw a group of these skiers (at age 70+) come through and I (being more novice than should be possible) was jaw dropping impressed by them.

If your main purpose of this trip is to ski or snowboard, then I highly recommend basing yourself IN Villa Cerro Catedral. Traffic in and out each day can be dense so staying here saves you quite a bit of time (and money on taxis).

Check Bariloche on booking.com and open the map to find a hotel or apartment in Villa Catedral. Anything here will be walkable to the slopes.

Cerro Catedral At A Glance:

  • Catedral has 29 ski lifts and 60 runs down the mountain
  • The village itself has two shopping centers, hotels, rental shops, restaurants and bars. Après ski is fantastic with local breweries and chocolate shops serving the region’s best hot chocolates.
  • Click here for a map of the runs and the resort
  • 7834 feet above sea level at summit
  • Crowds in peak weeks can be a hindrance, consider alternative resorts for peak July season.

Chapelco, San Martin de los Andes

When my husband quizzed locals in the region of where they preferred to ski, Chapelco was nearly always their answer due to the variety of the slopes and great weather.

It’s one of the few Argentina ski resorts on this list I have yet to visit but as a city to use as a base, San Martin de los Andes is very hard to beat.

Bariloche has grown into a big city and with it comes the negatives of any big city. San Martin de los Andes has the benefits of a city yet retains the feeling of a smaller village.

It’s beautiful and abounds with dining, accommodation and shopping options. Lying at the northern edge of the scenic 7 lakes route , there is plenty to see in the region for both skiers non-skiers alike.

Chapelco At A Glance:

  • 28 runs over 1500 hectares of skiable area
  • The majority of the runs pass through old growth lenga forests which offer protection from the infamous Patagonia wind
  • This is the only ski resort in Argentina run entirely on renewable energy
  • Chapelco is inclusive and the leader in adaptive skiing, offering classes to people of all abilities, read more here.
  • Great all around resort for avid skiers and families alike, visit official resort page .

Cerro Bayo, Villa La Angostura

We spent an entire month of winter in Villa La Angostura and I fell hard for Cerro Bayo.

Due to illness and doctor’s orders I wasn’t able to snowboard but I did spend a lot of time up here for après ski with my husband who couldn’t stop raving about Cerro Bayo.

They accurately market themselves as a boutique ski experience and after a month of navigating massive Cerro Catedral, I have to say I preferred the quaint yet stylish Cerry Bayo.

There was only one bar open at the base (compared to the small city of Catedral) and it was enough. It had a cozy log cabin, non-commercial feel.

The highlight, for me, was taking a day with a pedestrian pass to head to the summit and the lunch party I did not expect to find.

Music blared over the speaker while a full bar was set up in the snow. A professional asador cooked stews in a disc and grilled chorizos in the open air. That experience alone would be worth the flight if I’m allowed to exaggerate.

Beyond the dining and apres ski options (sorry, you can tell where I spent my time), logistics plays heavily in your favor here as well.

The turn off to Cerro Bayo is just 6 kilometers from downtown and from here a short 10 minute drive up the weaving road to the mountain. No other resort we visited was this close to town (Chapelco is a close second).

This lets you stay anywhere in Villa La Angostura and be only a short drive to the mountain. Las Balsas is the best luxury resort but budget accommodation exists as well. To be as close as possible, stay at ONA Apart hotel .

Cerro Bayo At A Glance:

  • 11 ski lifts with 14 km of runs over 126 hectares of skiable area
  • 4 routes for off-piste skiing
  • Like Chapelco, Bayo offers adaptive skiing for all abilities, click here for options
  • Click here for map of Cerro Bayo
  • Views of Lago Nahuel Haupi from the summit are incredible
  • As a smaller boutique resort it may not offer the variety a seasoned skier may be wanting but for a beginner or intermediate (or family or group of friends) Cerro Bayo has a lot to offer. For a seasoned skier you could easily add on a couple of days here to your time at Catedral, Villa La Angostura is only an hour north of Bariloche.

ski trip to argentina

Cerro Castor, Ushuaia

Let’s jump to the end of the world for a minute, Cerro Castor in Ushuaia is many a local’s favorite Argentina ski resort.

Being so far south, Ushuaia in winter is a true snow paradise and has the longest and most trustworthy ski season in Argentina. You can see sled dogs, go snowshoeing, ride snowmobiles, snowboard and ski.

There is a complex of cabins in Cerro Castor otherwise you’ll be comfortable staying in Ushuaia itself. Arakur , for example, is one of the best luxury properties here.

Cerro Castor At A Glance:

  • The summit is at 3467 feet above sea level.
  • Cerro Castor has 28 runs and 10 ski lifts
  • Click here for a map of the resort

Backcountry Skiing in Argentina at Baguales

For people looking for a once in a lifetime adventure book a backcountry Argentina ski holiday at Baguales Mountain Reserve .

Just one hour from Bariloche on Ruta 40.

On 25,000 acres of skiable land they offer cross country skiing and cat skiing for a true backcountry experience.

Other Argentina Ski Resorts

The above are the best Argentina ski resorts but there are more to choose from if you’ll be traveling across Patagonia.

If you want to get away from the crowds or ski on a budget, they might be a great alternative as well.

  • Cerro Perito Moreno, El Bolson – Perito Moreno is outside of El Bolson and it is a trek to get there if you stay in town. If you go purely to ski, try to find a place to stay nearby in Mallin Alto or prepare for a longer drive. As a resort, it felt a bit vintage and frozen in time but had epic views.
  • La Hoya, Esquel – Esquel is a few hours south of El Bolson and its ski resort is a short drive from downtown.
  • Lago Hermoso – This is a new boutique ski resort just to the south of San Martin de los Andes, an easy add on to your time at Chapelco.
  • Caviahue, Neuquen – Close-ish to the city of Neuquen and further from the other resorts on this list this is a bit off the beaten path, at least for international tourism. Caviahue has a respectable 13 lifts and 22 runs

Skiing Argentina: What to Expect

Argentina ski resorts abound in Patagonia from huge Cerro Catedral in Bariloche to boutique resorts and rugged backcountry skiing.

Snow enthusiasts from the north will be thrilled to be able to ski year round by heading south in July for the southern hemisphere’s winter.

Best Time to Ski Argentina

Argentina ski season begins in July and ends at the end of September but can vary.

July is the busiest month. The best time to ski Argentina is August, the crowds dissipate but you still have a lot of winter and snow left.

September is also a great time to go for great prices and low crowds but depending on the year it might be an early spring.

With the climate changing things can be unpredictable.

Winter arrived a bit late in 2023 and the season unexpectedly extended into mid-October.

Lift Ticket Prices for Skiing Argentina

How much does it cost to ski in Argentina?

This depends on the currency fluctuations and also heavily on which Argentina ski resort you choose.

In 2023 Cerro Catedral, Argentina’s biggest ski resort in Bariloche, cost the equivalent of around $55 US.

Heading just an hour or two in either direction to Cerro Bayo or Cerro Perito Moreno could cost as low as half of that.

Prices haven’t been released yet for the 2024 season and with the current rate of inflation, I imagine prices won’t be released until much closer to the season.

With the spread between the official and blue dollars diminishing ( what is that? read here ), I’d expect the price in dollars for skiing Argentina in 2024 to be more expensive than the past few years.

Ski and Snowboard Rentals in Argentina

All of the ski resorts in Argentina have equipment rentals available on site.

Cerro Catedral, for example, has multiple options.

Depending on where you go and how you can get around with the gear you rent, it can sometimes be more affordable to rent in town.

In Villa La Angostura renting in town at Bayo Abajo for half the price of the same gear on the mountain.

That said, sometimes it can be easier to rent at the resort so you have a place to store your gear. At Cerro Catedral, we rented from Aurelio.

It was convenient to leave the gear there each night and they also let us park our car in their lot during the day.

Bariloche ski trip.

Located in Argentina's northern Patagonia region, Bariloche is a small city that serves as the gateway to the country’s renowned ski area, Cerro Catedral. Cerro Catedral is named for the Gothic cathedral-looking granite spirals that sit atop the mountain. As a South American heavy-hitter and the largest lift-accessed ski area in that part of the world, Cerro Catedral will meet, and exceed, every modern ski resort standard. The resort recently underwent a several million dollar facelift, on both chairlifts and infrastructure. Cerro Catedral is distinguished as one of the only South American ski resorts with a true base village. The base village provides about 5,000 beds that are namely ski in, ski out, or slopeside hotels. Plus, it offers a respectable variety of restaurants, shops and bars to suite any après-ski interests.

The city of Bariloche can accommodate 20,000 guests with ranging from budget lodges five-star hotels. Located just eight miles from Cerro Catedral, Bariloche’s proximity, and its own airport, is part of what makes it a convenient and hassle-free South American ski vacation. Plus, it provides vacations with the opportunity to ski and to explore the city, and even Lake Nahuel Huapi, all in one day. No other Argentinean ski area can match Bariloche in nightlife, dining, cinemas, theater, or its eight discos and a casino.

Bariloche is an attractive small city with a little more than 100,000 people. The Swiss influences are apparent in its chalet-style buildings and chocolate shops. The city offers contrasting—and stunning—views of the gorgeous Lake Nahuel Huapi and the Andes. Bariloche serves as the epicenter to several other Argentina ski resorts, including Cerro Bayo, Cerro Chapelco and Perito Moreno ski area.

Cerro Catedral - Bariloche Skiing

Skiers who crave powder fields and spectacular scenery, must ski from atop Cerro Catedral ski resort’s dramatic Piedra del Condor, or Stone of the Condor, peak. Here there are wide-open snow fields and long gullies, all above the timberline, making it a prime locale for the best snow conditions.

Bariloche skiing offers terrain for all levels of ability, but experts and adventure-seekers will be pleased to know that half of Cerro Catedral’s 3,000 acres is off-piste/backcountry terrain, accessed from the new La Laguna chairlift. Renowned for tree-skiing and aforementioned backcountry chutes and bowls, Cerro Catedral is best suited to intermediate and expert skiers and snowboarders, but offers beginner skiers plenty of options. Freestyle skiers and snowboarders will be happy with the terrain park offerings on a Bariloche ski vacation, too.

Pire Hue & Cerro Catedral Are Wonderful We had a really amazing experience and recommend very highly both the lodge and ski area .
Weather bad / Cerro Catedral customer service worse If I could leave a ZERO star rating I would. The weather which is out of everyone's control was really bad even though we were in the middle of ski season. Snow coverage was poor throughout the mountain and probably should have been closed on one or more days of our ski pass which ran from 7/12 to 7/14. Cerro Catedral would not offer an exchange (for a later date), a credit, or a refund. Their attitude was "if one trail is open", the mountain is open and too bad. Customer service like this would last one minute in the United States and the mountain would close in one season! Feel bad for people who have little or no other choices to ski - thankfully, we have so many great choices in the US and I will NOT travel to South America to ski again. Only reason I was there was to visit my daughter who was studying abroad in Buenos Aires and feel blessed and fortunate that I got to spend quality time with her. The town of Bariloche is quite nice, especially the town centre and the scenery throughout this area is spectacular. Too bad the ski experience did not match the great rest of the trip!

Argentina is one of the best ski destinations in the world. Whether you’re a novice or a pro, want a full-service lodge by an urban center or prefer remote backcountry huts, Argentina's ski resorts cater to all abilities and preferences. The terrain is diverse and the landscapes unbeatable. Active volcanoes, monkey puzzle tree forests, giant pinnacles of snow, and shimmering lakes are just a few of the sights along runs here. Many of the best places for winter sports will be in the Patagonia region, where the snow will be drier than on the Chilean side of the Andes. The season runs from mid-June to the end of October, though the sweet spot is mid-July through mid-September

Cerro Catedral Alta Patagonia

Brainsil / Getty Images

The largest ski resort in the southern hemisphere, Catedral contains powdery spires shaped like a Gothic cathedral, from whence it took is name. Skiers can glide down 53 well-signaled runs or opt to utilize the surrounding area’s refugio (hut) system for lodging on multi-day backcountry trips. Patrons can rent or buy equipment at the resort, and book classes at the ski school. Varieties of skiing available include: alpine, Nordic, randonée, and off-piste. Snowboarding, sledding, and paragliding are also offered. Though open year-round, the high season is around mid-June to mid-October. Located just 5 miles outside of Bariloche , the resort can be easily reached by car or bus.

Carlos Mir / Getty Images

Famed for having one of the longest ski seasons in Argentina and some of its best powder (thanks to its southward facing orientation and subsequent lack of sunshine), this family-friendly ski resort is located in the province of Chubut. Come here May through October for alpine, Nordic, randoneé, and off-piste skiing, as well as snowboarding and snowshoeing. All of the 24 trails lead back to a single base, and lift tickets are fairly inexpensive. Fly from Buenos Aires Jorge Newbery Airport to the nearby town of Esquel to get there. The lack of crowds, wide beginner tracks, and ski and snowboard school make this a great option for novice skiers, but it’s not only for beginners. More advanced skiers will come for the chutes, bowels, and dry powder of the Fly Park, a terrain park of three sections for different experience levels of off-piste skiing.

Daniel Wolkomirski / Getty Images

Big mountain lines, easy access to backcountry skiing, and a strong nightlife scene make Las Leñas one of the most famous ski resorts in Argentina. This is the place for a cat skiing tour and spying pro ski and snowboarding athletes. While mostly suited to intermediate and advanced skiers, it also has routes for beginners. The season runs early June through late September, and the quality of snow, especially in the upper sections, is said to be some of the best in all of South America. Spend all day on the slopes, then head into the village of Las Leñas for clubbing until 4 a.m. To get there, fly from Buenos Aires to Malargüe, then take a bus or drive about an hour to Las Leñas.

Cerro Castor

Gustavo Buyan / Getty Images

The world’s southernmost ski resort, Castor has one of the longest ski seasons in Argentina, from mid-June to mid-October, and kicks off with the Longest Night in the World Festival. Castor’s 33 well-marked trails cater to all skill levels from beginner to pro, though 60 percent of the runs are graded as beginner or intermediate. Alpine and off-piste skiers, bi-skiers, outrigger skiers, split boarders, and snowboarders all come to ride Castor’s high-quality powder. The resort houses several ski and snowboard rental facilities, medical services, a ski and snowboard school, and multiple coffee shops. Reach it by flying into Ushuaia’s international airport, a mere 15 miles away from the resort.

Cerro Chapelco

Eric_Schroeder / Getty Images

Chapelco has the comforts and modern amenities of a large ski resort, yet it’s mid-sized. Adrenaline junkies will want to cat ski some of its great off-piste terrain, and those sticking to alpine skiing can still enjoy the forested scenery and good-quality powder. The resort offers 22 trails of varying difficulty (with some of the best terrain for intermediate skiers in the country) and 2,360 feet of vertical drop. Located in Lanín National Park, the town of San Martin de los Andes is only 12 miles away and offers plenty of dining and entertainment options. The season runs from late June to mid-October. Medical services, a ski school, and equipment rentals are all onsite. Also, it’s the only Argentine ski resort powered by renewable energy.

Cerro Caviahue

Cavan Images / Getty Images

Come here for skiing, snowboarding, dog sledding, or soaking in hot springs. Located in Neuquén Province, the resort sits on the side of Copahue Volcano which can be heard rumbling during evening soaks in the nearby town of Copahue’s mud hot springs. The terrain is ideal for beginners and types of skiing offered include alpine, Nordic, and randonée. The season runs from mid-June to the end of September and, other than the month of July, has very few crowds. It's also much cheaper than the larger the resorts. Fly from Buenos Aires to the city of Neuquén, then rent a car, get a bus, or hire a transfer service to go the 224 miles to Caviahue. There’s a ski school and equipment rentals on site. Check out the Torchlight Parade on Fridays, in which skiers carry torches down the slopes, symbolic of both of greeting new visitors and saying farewell to those leaving.

Mallin Alto

A backcountry paradise, go here if you want to ski virgin powder in the middle of the Patagonian wilderness. Though it’s only around 14 miles from Bariloche, the journey there involves fording a river multiple times, then snowmobiling or quad track biking to the base. Patrons can stay in stylish geodesic domes and enjoy unlimited wine and jacuzzi when not backcountry skiing. There are no lifts, and it's definitely for the intermediate to advanced skier or snowboarder. The season runs June through November. The closest airport is in Bariloche.

Baguales Mountain Reserve

Baguales offers prime backcountry skiing and snowboarding for advanced riders. A typical day here consists of cat skiing 14 to 20 runs with descents of 3,500 to 4,000 meters (11,482 to 13,120 feet). Costs include avalanche safety gear, UIAGM certified guides, return transfers from Bariloche, located about an hour north of Baguales. Equipment can be provided for additional costs, but patrons can bring their own, too. Bagueles has a refugio system of six huts, complete with WIFI and meal service, making only carrying equipment necessary from hut to hut. The season runs from June to October, and the closest airport is in Bariloche.

Ronaldo Jos Melo Da Silva / EyeEm / Getty Images

A small, but fairly modern resort, Bayo totes itself as “boutique”, meaning it’s not cheap, but it’s less crowded than Cathedral or some of the other big resorts. Ski through forests and see beautiful views of the surrounding lakes on its 22 marked runs. The closest town is Villa La Angostura, just over 50 miles from the airport in Bariloche. From June to October, winter sports enthusiasts can go alpine and off-piste skiing, as well as snowboarding. The resort also offers a ski and snowboard school and has instructors who can teach adaptive skiing for those with physical, mental, or sensory handicaps.

Batea Mahuida Snow Park

Mono Andes / Getty Images

Come to this snow park to ski on a volcano and support indigenous people. Managed by the Mapuche Puel community, Batea Mahuida slopes are wind free and have large amounts of snow, making it suited for learning alpine or cross-country skiing. The season runs from June to October. Due to its smallness, multitude of easy runs, and low price tag, Batea Mahuida is super family friendly, albeit remote. Fly to the city of Neuquén from Buenos Aires and rent a car to go the 230 miles to Batea Mahuida. From the top of the snow park, skiers and snowboarders can enjoy magnificent scenery, including: Aluminé and Moquehue lakes, the domes of several volcanoes, and part of Chile. There’s no accommodation on Batea Mahuida itself, but nearby Villa Pehuenia offers several options, as well as winter excursions like ice diving .

Are you thinking about a skiing trip to Argentina ? Well, slap on your boots, wax your boards, and get a fresh pair of snow goggles because Argentina’s ski resorts are a great reason to visit the country! The best time to visit Argentina when booking a ski trip is from June to September. This is when Argentina experiences iceberg cold weather (especially the further south you are), which creates fantastic skiing and snowboarding conditions.

Argentina also features some of the world’s tallest mountains and the mighty Andes provide the perfect backdrop for some of the best skiing in South America . If you haven’t thought about adding Argentina to your snow-sport travel repertoire, you should strongly reconsider. Read below for The Best Ski Resorts in Argentina!

Where are the best ski resorts in Argentina?

First things first, check out where the Argentina ski resorts are on this map below.

ski trip to argentina

1. Las Lenas Ski Resort (Mendoza, Argentina)

ski trip to argentina

Las Lenas Ski Resort is one of the largest Andean ski resorts in South America. It is located at the base of the Andes Mountains in Mendoza, the area that is normally known for its wine tours. People obsess over the incredible ski and snowboard terrain that Las Lenas provides. Some even go as far as saying that there is more skiable terrain here than at Whistler. This internationally favored ski resort offers a snowy playground for both beginners and experts. As you would expect with these kinds of credentials, Las Leñas, with South America’s most modern lift system, is one of the more exclusive resorts in Argentina.

Enjoy 13 ski lifts, hundreds of chutes and bowls, and a vast amount of out of bounds space to shred. There is even a basic snow park located in the center of the resort where the advanced can practice their tricks! What’s the greatest attribute of Las Lenas? It’s the best lift-accessed terrain in the Andes. Many of the lifts take you right back to the resort. There are many other winter activities here besides skiing. Snowshoe for a different perspective of the mountain, or go cross-country skiing. Las Leñas is also open during the summer months (October to June) when you can take part in a wide variety of mountain activities; for example, mountain biking, hiking, climbing, and horse riding.

Après-ski at Las Leñas Resort

Plus, in your downtime or on a night out after intense outdoor, physical activity, tourists can explore the Centro Commercial La Piramide – where casinos, restaurants, shops, hotels, and a lively nightlife present themselves. Whether you unwind over a dinner of classic fondue or Argentine steak, or you want to let your hair down in one of the nightly discos, Las Leñas Argentina ski resort has it all.

International and Argentine cuisine can be found at Cuatro Estaciones (four corners), one of the restaurants in the excellent Piscis hotel. If it’s the Argentine steak you’re after, Restaurant Club de la Nieve is your best bet, not to mention that the restaurant also serves the best fondue in the valley! Our pick, however, is Bar Edelweiss, where culinary students at the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo prepare international dishes to the highest standard. Night owls looking to continue the après-ski into the early hours have the choice of two discos in town.

2. Los Penitentes Ski Resort (Mendoza, Argentina)

Advanced, intermediate and beginner skiers and snowboarders are all welcome at Los Penitentes Ski Resort . This medium-sized ski resort is equipped with 8 ski lifts and 25 runs of various lengths and drops. Though Penitentes is a small center, there is an abundance of hotels in the area where guests can stay.

There are also plenty of services such as ski schools, a snow garden, a shopping center, restaurants, and more. Consider combining an Argentina food and wine tour with a snowboarding vacation! There’s nothing better than experiencing both the excellent wines and mountain ranges that Argentina has to offer!

3. Cerro Caviahue Ski Resort (Neuquén Province, Argentina)

Caviahue Ski Resort is smokin’ and we mean literally – Caviahue is located on the very active Copahue Volcano. The ski resort’s unique terrain is ideal for beginner skiers and snowboarders and is considered family-friendly. You can enjoy views of the horseshoe-shaped blue lake while you glide down the mountain.

Après-ski, head to the town of Caviahue, which rests at the base of the Copahue Volcano along the shores of Lake Caviahue. The town continues to evolve with new restaurants and shops, while still preserving its original charm. If you avoid the peak holiday period in July, lift tickets are inexpensive and Caviahue accommodation is reasonably priced compared to other Argentina ski areas.

4. Chapelco Ski Resort (Neuquén Province, Argentina)

ski trip to argentina

The Chapelco Ski Resort’s name comes from the Chapelco Mountain itself and is located near Bariloche, Argentina. Tourists often choose this ski resort due to its proximity to the vacation-resort town of San Martin de los Andes , one of Argentina’s most charming Lake District villages. The region has not gone through any severe deforestation, which means tree skiing is bountiful and at its peak.

Chapelco offers 11 lifts for skiers and snowboarders, including a brand-new, high-speed quad and a gondola. Beginner, intermediate and advanced runs are available across the mountain. Patagonia Argentina ski resorts are very popular amongst tourists, so book fast before all the space fills up!

5. Cerro Bayo Ski Boutique Resort (Neuquén Province, Argentina)

ski trip to argentina

Cerro Bayo Ski Boutique  overlooks Nahuel Huapi Lake and offers some of the best winter skiing and snowboarding in Argentina. This ski resort designed several exclusive sectors for each type of skier and/or snowboarder. There are runs specifically for beginners and intermediate riders, as well as off-piste tracks for experts looking for a thrill. Riders can get their freestyle on at the improved terrain park, which includes drawers, rails, and even a big air. In the summertime, come to Cerro Bay for some excellent hiking!

6. Cerro Catedral Ski Resort (San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina)

ski trip to argentina

Cerro Catedral Ski Resort prides itself as the largest and most developed ski resort in South America. Located in San Carlos de Bariloche, Cerro Catedral has the largest lift-accessed ski terrain on the continent. Best suited for intermediate and advanced riders, this mega ski resort has 1,150 meters of vertical drop and 120 km of slopes.

There is an abundance of hotels and hostels for visitors to stay, as well as ski schools for all ages, levels, and styles. At night, explore Bariloche which has a little bit of everything: bars, cybercafes, snacks, pubs, traditional and international restaurants.Make sure to plan ahead if you would like to stay here because Cerro Catedral is an extremely popular ski resort in Argentina!

7. La Hoya Ski Resort (Chubut, Argentina)

ski trip to argentina

La Hoya Ski Resort is in southern Argentina and offers riders some of the most powdery snow! The snow conditions stay fresh all year round due to the fact that the slopes do not receive much sun. Alpine and Nordic skiing and snowboarding are popular here. The terrain also offers a special area for randonnée skiing, a circuit for snowmobiles and exciting off-piste areas with deep pow. Families frequent La Hoya Ski Resort often. 10 lifts and 24 runs are available. Pack a bag and head on over to La Hoya!

8. Cerro Castor (Ushuaia, Argentina)

Cerro Castor slopes

Cerro Castor Ski Resort sits on the slopes of Mount Krund in Ushuaia, Cerro Castor Ski Resort offers 15 small cabins for an intimate ski experience at the end of the world. And that isn’t a marketing ploy, it is actually the most Southern Ski Resort in the world. With views of the Beagle Channel and a modern lift system, it’s a great choice for anyone hoping to visit a medium-sized resort. It’s got 33 trails and 8 chair lifts and plenty of room to roam around with 1600 acres of skiable terrain. The trip to Ushuaia is quite charming too, with its port, quality restaurants, and cute shops.

Ski Resorts in Argentina: Party Hearty And Ski Spectacular Snowfields

From the wine regions of Mendoza to the southernmost tip of South America, Argentina’s ski and snowboard areas offer some spectacular skiing and riding. Argentineans like to party in style and, like their neighbours in Chile , think nothing of stepping out for dinner at 11 p.m. and the disco after midnight. Most resorts have ski in, ski out accommodations so there’s not far to walk to the lift in the morning.

Las Lenas is the most extreme of the Argentinean mountain resorts and known for its lift-accessed back country with steep pitches, deep powder snow and some seriously white knuckle runs. The vertical drop at Las Lenas is 1200 meters, or 1.2 kilometers and the resort has 230 hectares of inbound skiable terrain.

There are 27 official runs, but a host of out of bounds backcountry skiing that requires a knowledge of avalanches and extreme conditions. The resort does offer some excellent intermediate skiing, but it really comes into its own for those at the advanced end. The resort base is basic, the emphasis here is on skiing, but there is a variety of accommodation options from luxe to budget and, where there is snow, you will find bars and people willing to party.

The resort town of Bariloche further south is an alpine tourist Mecca on the shores of a lake with the Andres thrusting skyward. It’s a modern town akin to Aspen, but with a European influence and feel. There’s an airport making Bariloche easily accessible from Buenos Aires. Some of the country’s finest lodge and hotel resorts are found in Bariloche and from there, it’s possible to ski a number of resorts including Cerro Catedral .

Cerro Catedral is named after the peaks that form a cathedral formation with breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding Andes from the piste. Cerro Catedral has 600 hectares of skiable terrain inside the Nahuel Huapi national park and the resort offers 29 lifts and a 25, 45 and 30 percent split between beginner, intermediate and advanced terrain. It’s possible to stay in Catedral at the base of the mountain in the local village with a variety of hotels and lodges or at Bariloche, 19 kilometers away.

The alpine region of Villa La Angostura is home to the Cerro Bayo ski and snowboard area, which offers 200 hectares of terrain complete with tree runs. You won’t find the lift queues of Catedral at Bayo. The mountain has a 700-metre vertical drop, 23 runs and 12 lifts. Around 40 percent of the resort is intermediate and 35 percent advanced.

Further south again is Chapelco ski area sits in the country’s southwest region near San Martin de Los Andes. With 140 hectares of terrain, it’s a boutique-style resort, smaller and more intimate with a good blend of gentle slopes ideal for families and some backcountry adrenaline runs for those willing to hike. There’s plenty of tree skiing on offer as the resort is set within a forest and the base town is picture postcard cute.

Cerro Castor is the southernmost ski field in the world. It’s elevation is low from 195 meters to 1,057 meters and it’s close to the sea so the snow, while plentiful, is not as dry as up north. The novelty of skiing this far south and this close to the ocean is an attraction unto itself. The majority of the terrain is intermediate across 600 hectares and 23 runs.

Getting between resorts in Argentina is not always an easy task. Las Lenas to Bariloche takes 16 hours in two different buses so if you’re planning a snow safari allow for travel times. There are however enough resorts to cater for all sorts of skiers or boarders and if there is some travel time it will be well rewarded with Argentina’s unique approach to skiing and snowboarding where style and a love of life combine.

You won’t believe it. But we actually found heaven, right here on earth. Well, for skiers and snowboarders. On the tip of South America’s spear sits Argentina, a paradise for powder junkies, backcountry enthusiasts, adventurers, freeskiers and freestylers… heck, even for the conservative family. Argentina is a mecca for mountains, with the highest mountain range in the world, the Andes, calling this stunning Latin country home. And if beauty is what you seek, it’s beauty you’ll find in the breathtaking landscape of Patagonia. Our Head of Sales travel is a true board rider. From starting out skating as a kid back home in the UK, to snowboarding in the European Alps and Canada, to chasing waves all across the globe, Mister Jenner has done it all. Now spending his time flipping between the mountains and the ocean, Martin is your go-to guy for Snow Travel and Maldives Surf Trips.

So, you decide to book an Argentina trip on your own. Proud for doing it solo and without the help of an experienced travel company, you arrive in a Spanish-speaking country to an unreliable airport pickup (who didn’t arrive) and an ugly taxi-ride to an even uglier hotel. Argentina is a beautiful part of the world, but it can be difficult to navigate and to have the assurance that your booking is accurate without the proper guidance. Let us take away the stress of a “trip gone wrong” and book with us. Give LUEX a call to look at options for an ideal experience in Argentina.

"Combining Argentina trip with some awesome powder was the best thing ever!"

"Chile has much to offer. Snow was great, so we really enjoyed our days!"

"These were great holidays! I enjoyed every single minute! And I will be back for sure."

"I didn't know that Argentina had so much Snow to offer! It was incredible."

Reviews of LUEX

Four reasons to experience argentina, the patagonian dream.

Patagonia holds a place in many riders’ hearts. Even if they’ve only seen Argentina’s unmistakable mountain range on a screen. Covering over one million square kilometers of South American soil and hitting elevations of up to 3,400 meters, Patagonia is a playground begging to be enjoyed. The terrain is sensational, with natural features everywhere to be found and deep powder plentiful. Patagonia is home to the southern section of the Andes mountain range, which is globally ranked second in height only to the Himalayas.

The terrain may be harsh and undulating for some, but a perfect challenge for many. Its conditions are ripe for fluffy powder between July and late September, and you’ll be pressed to find another soul on the slopes if you book your trip right. With a visit to Argentina, you can realise your lifelong (or newfound) winter dream. Head to Patagonia for a trip of a lifetime

Beauty beyond belief

Impressive summits and steep verticals are out there to be explored. But if Argentina’s incredible riding won’t excite you, its breathtaking beauty will. You’ll sight rare wildlife, witness the most awesome mountains standing shoulder to shoulder and see a glistening sun and blue skies hang above them, in one of the most weather-consistent regions on the globe. The glaciers are magnificent here. A shelf of pre-mountain ranges exist in the winter months, and viewing points, hikes and guided tours are plentiful in the region. Take advantage of all Argentina has to offer by witnessing its incredible beautye

A backcountry experience like no other

It’s rugged, it’s raw and it’s all yours to explore. And when in Argentina, why not do so with expert guides by your side. Taking a heliski tour out to these parts is almost too good to be true, as the terrain is close to perfection, the powder seems bottomless and the options for features, lines and trails are endless.

Backcountry in Argentina is as good as it gets, and it’s not just for the pros or the prosperous. Our operators have budgets for a range of travelers, especially with snowcat tours. Snowcats are a modest way to adventure out of bounds, but what comes with a smaller price tag comes with unmatched benefits. Experiencing the mountain face to face like this, as you scale its body in the comfort of a heated snowcat, is a connection most miss on a heliski tour. But whichever way you choose to tackle it, backcountry in Argentina is an experience unlike any other.

Adventure into culture

If you want a taste of true Latin culture, Argentina has it. Your taste buds will surrender to the treats and delicacies brought on by the locals and what better way to do it than with a traditional South American barbecue. An asado is a local social tradition, where a spread of fresh meats are cooked on a grill (or parrilla) and shared in good spirits among great company. Complement these flavoursome meats with some local Argentinian wine and it’s safe to say your palate will be in a very good mood after your first asado.

The country of over 44 million inhabitants has a politeness embedded in its personality, which makes visitors feel right at home. Because Argentina is a relationship-driven culture, connecting and interacting between visitors and locals is not only encouraged but anticipated. Beyond memories of mountains and landscape, you’ll take home a heartwarming impression of Argentina that will make certain your first trip here isn’t your last.

Skiing in Chile is like at the edge of the world.
