Soon Valley

Soon Valley is like a cup surrounded by rolling unsymmetrical green hills presenting a breathtaking vista. Known for its natural beauty, the valley provides a unique sanctuary to a host of migratory birds in winter. It is a valley of lakes and springs, lush green fertile fields, versatile mountains, amazing landscape, dense mixed forests, sanctuaries of wildlife, brave peoples of high traditions, rich archaeology, pre-historic sites and ancient history.

It’s situated in the north west of District Khushab, Punjab.  The Valley starts from Padhrar village and ends at Sakesar which is the highest peak of Salt Range. The length of Soon Valley is 35 miles (56 km) and average width is 9 miles (14 km).

The temperature is mild to pleasant in the summer and cold in winters. Soon Valley is heavenly in all seasons, especially when the monsoon clouds engulfs the valley and a chill breeze races down Sakesar to welcome wandering tourists. Located at a height of 5,010 feet (1,530 m) above sea level, Sakesar, the highest mountain in the Salt Range looms over Uchali lake. It was once the summer headquarters for the Deputy Commissioners of three districts – Campbelpur (now Attock), Mianwali and Shahpur (now Sargodha).

It is the only mountain in this part of Punjab which receives snow fall in winters. In view of Sakesar’s ideal location and height, PAF selected it in the late-50s as the site for a high powered radar which would provide air defence cover for the northeastern part of the western wing. Pakistan Television’s re-broadcasting center has been installed to provide terrestrial transmissions coverage to adjoining areas.

Situated in the heart of Soon Valley , Naushera is the only town of the valley, surrounded by high hills, beautiful lakes, jungles, natural pools and ponds. Naushera is also blessed with ancient civilization, natural resources, and fertile farms. The major settlement of the valley ‘Nausehra’ lies almost in the geographical centre of the valley and is located at 72″ II’ 29″ north latitude and 32″ 34′ 58″ west longitude. The general height of surrounding hills is around 2500 feet above sea level, with several peaks reaching over 3000 feet. Tourists can use ATMs and internet cafes too in Naushera.

Islamabad to Soon Valley:

While coming from Islamabad/Rawalpindi, enter on M2 motorway towards Lahore, move out of motorway from Balkasar Interchange and travel towards Talagang. After crossing Talagang drive on Khushab road (Katha road) up to Jaba mor (a road turning right towards Jaba, the first village of Soon Valley on that side). Naushera is 25km from Jaba village. Total distance from Islamabad to Naushahra is 240 km. At about 2 km from Jaba Mor towards Khushab, there is another road that is called Sultan Mehdi – Sodhi Road and this road also leads to Naushera.

Lahore to Soon Valley:

While coming from Lahore, enter on M2 motorway towards Islamabad and move out of Motorway from Kalar Kahar interchange, then travelling from Kalar Kahar to Padhrar and Pail villages that are the eastern most villages of Soon Valley, take a turn from Pail Chowk to Jaba Mor (a road turning right towards Jaba Mor). The road condition from Kalarkahar to Soon Valley is good. Total distance from Lahore to Naushahra is 309 km. At about 2 km before Jaba Mor you can turn left on Sultan Mehdi – Sodhi road.

• Uchali Lake

Uchali Lake is the most popular tourist attraction in the valley. This lake is formed due to the absence of drainage in the range. Sakaser, the highest mountain in the Salt Range at 1,522 meters (4,993 ft), looms over the lake. Due to its saline water the lake is lifeless, but offers picturesque scenery. • Khabeki Lake

If you are going to visit Uchali Lake and coming from Kalarkahar or Talagang side, then most probably you will pass this lake on your way (unless you take the Sodhi road route). The lake and the green area around provide a good scenery. Both Uchali and Khabeki lakes attract hundreds of migratory birds each year and are ideal haven for the bird watchers.   Khabeki Lake Map

• Jahlar Lake

One can experience the peace and natural beauty on visiting Jahlar lake and it creates a feeling of deep calm. It is one of the least visited lakes of the valley mainly because of it’s location. The lake is situated near the village Jahlar. Its area under water is approximately 148 acres. In winter, birds from distant places migrate to this lake and in summer they make their return back to the native countries. The water is strongly acidic and one can wash clothes with its water without any soup. This lake does not contain any facilities like boating or fishing unlike Uchali or Khabeki lake. There are two routes to this lake; one is from Kathwayi to Jahlar (if you are coming from Sargodha side) and the other is from Naushera to Surakki and then from there to Jahlar.  Jahlar Lake Map

• Kanhatti Garden

It is a beautiful place where one can not only enjoy the spiritual peace but also the gorgeous scenic beauty because of a small waterfall, ponds and water springs. The way to Dep Shareef goes from Kufri village or from the main road. Road almost goes near to the water springs from where one has to travel 1 kilometre by foot in order to reach the ponds. It is a mountainous ziaarat gaah . Water springs flow here in abundance. Water is absolutely clean, pure and sweet. People from all over the valley come here to pay theirr homage to this sacred place because of a saint Siraaj Ud Din Naqshbandi. Daip Shareef Map

• Anmb Shareef

The fort and temples of Anmb Shareef are located in tehsil Quaidabad. Most of the people consider these temples as a part of the area of Soon Valley because of its contiguity to the dhoks of Mahoriyaan but officially, it is designated in tehsil Quaidabad rather than tehsil Khushab.

These buildings hold a special interest for the archaeologists. Originally, the whole of this area was a fort in which there was one palace and two temples. Nowadays, only the palace and one temple exist. There used to be different statues in this fort but nothing is left of them now. The architecture of the temple is of Kashmiri style. The palace comprises of three floors but one can only approach the ground and the first floor. Each floor has a central hall.

This temple and palace is in ruins now. Government should endeavour to renovate and revive it just like they did with the temples of Katas Raj. This place holds immense archaeological importance and can be even termed as world heritage site by UN. Excavations have been going on here since many years and many precious and priceless artefacts and statues have been taken away by the smugglers and local people. This place still possesses invaluable treasure underneath it in the form of artefacts, statues and coins etc. If robust efforts have not been made by the archaeological department officials, it will be devoid of its treasure by the smugglers and people with selfish minds.   Amb Shareef Map

Nurshing Phuwar

Nurshingh Phowaar (Often mispronounced as nursing phowaar) is a place where one can find beautiful temples and lovely water springs. The temples still retain their original shape although rapidly deteriorating.

Regarding its history, there was a Hindu Nurshingh Daas who came to this place to pray. The drops of the water spring falls on the adjoining mountains and that is why how this place got the name of nurshingh phowaar. In the past, in the month of beesakh, a besaakhi mela used to be celebrated at this place where Yaatrees came from distant towns and villages. There is a beautiful waterfall, greenery at its best, mind blowing water springs and amazing archaeological as well as historical temples at this place. These days, this temple is under the department of Oqaaf. It is a pity and we repeat, it is a pity and sheer callousness of our government that this temples has been turning into ruins since the last so many years. No care has been given to this place, no funds are allocated and we people are going to lose this precious historical site located in our own valley. Answer: We add the transport / vehicle rents in the trip. If you choose to travel in a small family group of 8 – 12 passengers, we will arrange a Hiace grand cabin for your ease and comfort and similarly the prices will include all the costs of this vehicle i.e. fuel for return journey, road tolls, professionally trained driver for tourist destinations and his expenses as well. Furthermore, we offer some snacks for the journey. Optional items are travel insurance and tour guide.

8. Shall we book a tour guide for this trip?

Answer: The tour guide is an additional optional service that ZED Tours provide. The tour guide will offer you the additional support during the trip. We recommend taking the guide to areas / destinations that are historically rich and need some related info.

9. How to book this trip and do we need to book in advance?

Answer: Bookings in advance are recommended. You can contact our Tour Manager at 0336-8466646 to book this trip. The booking advance will be 50% . you will share the passenger details, pick up point and our tour manager will be happy to share the details travel plan with you or the lead passengers. This will include pick up time, vehicle type & number, the contact details of tour guide / driver. The remainder 50% payment shall be paid at the completion of the journey.

10. What if we cancel the trip?

Answer: If you book a trip and cancel it after the payment of 50% advance, this shall be non- refundable. However, we can adjust the same trip to another date with same advance fee deposit in most of the cases.

A Guide To Soon Valley

Located in the district of Khushab, an hour’s drive from Kallar Kahar, Punjab’s Soon Valley is an undiscovered wonderland with a diverse landscape comprising mountains, forests, lakes, waterfalls and orchards. The Tourism Development Corporation of Punjab (TDCP) has recently begun to develop a sustainable, eco-tourism project in the valley to put it athe migratory birds that flock here every winter. Team Destinations recently went on an exclusive three-day trip to the valley in collaboration with TDCP to see for themselves the many wonders encapsulated within the region, and came away captivated.

With scenic lakes, lush orchards, majestic mountains and pre-historic sites, Soon Valley provides the perfect escape for nature lovers, or just anyone looking to get away from the drudgery of urban living. While its riveting and diverse landscape is one of its most alluring qualities, what really gives the valley an edge is its status as a sanctuary for migratory birds, some of which fly in from as far as Siberia. Come winter, birds such as flamingos flock to Soon’s many lakes, and the valley is rife with dazzling photo-ops no matter which way you turn.

How To Get There

There are two ways to enter the Soon Valley on the M2 motorway. One is via the Kallar Kahar interchange and the other from the Lilla interchange. For a complete tour of the valley, it would be best to enter from Kallar Kahar and exit from Lilla. Travelling to and in this area is generally safe, but it is advisable to limit your movements after sunset.

When To Visit

The perfect time to visit is from autumn to spring. However, it’s a beautiful place all year round.

DID YOU KNOW…

Present since the Palaeolithic age, the culture of Soon Valley is considered one of the oldest in the world.

Excavations around Soon Valley have uncovered evidence that the area was home to the earliest human inhabitants of the region. The discoveries include 500,000 year old relics of the Stone Age man. 

Tools dating back 2 million years have been recovered from the Soon terrace. Many fossil-bearing rocks are exposed at the surface in the Soon River gorges. Fossils of gazelles, rhinoceros, crocodiles, giraffes and rodents dating back 14 million years have also been found here. A sample of these fossils is displayed at the Pakistan Museum of Natural History in Islamabad.

TDCP Resorts

For a trip to Soon Valley, you can set up base at the TDCP resorts in either Kallar Kahar or Khabeki. Using Khabeki as the base for your trip is a better option as it is closer to most tourist destinations in and around the valley. 

In order to reach the TDCP resort in Kallar Kahar or Khabeki, you will need to take the exit at the Kallar Kahar interchange on the motorway. TDCP Kallar Kahar is a 5-minute drive while Khabeki is 2 hours further down.

Government Rest Houses

There are three colonial-era rest houses in the valley where you can stay as long as you get prior permission from the authorities, Naushera Rest House, Sodhi Rest House and Phulwari Rest House

Village Inn Hotel

Located in Naushera, the closest city to Soon Valley, Punjab Village Inn is located between Uchali and Khabeki Lakes. It’s at a distance of 10 kms from Khabeki and 14 kms from Uchali. Its convenient location makes it a good base for day tours.

PLACES TO SEE

Khabeki Lake & TDCP Resort

Khabeki Lake is located at a distance of 290 kilometres from Lahore and it takes between 5 to 6 hours to reach it by car. The resort provides an ideal home base for you to visit places nearby. There are bikes available for rent for both adults and kids to explore the surroundings. You can take a walk on the boardwalk or enjoy the spectacular sunsets that the valley is famous for with a steaming cup of tea on the Khabeki Lake viewing platform. The resort has a decent variety of dishes on their menu and the rooms are very affordable and clean. If you want to bring your own camping gear, there is space to set it up, and the staff will go out of their way to assist you. It is advisable to book rooms at least a week in advance because of limited space. 

Kanhatti Garden

Kanhatti Garden was built by Major Whet Burn, the district engineer of the area under the British Raj, in 1933. The garden is a picturesque place planted with hundreds of trees, including almond, apricot, pineapple, orange, olive and fig trees. There is a waterfall and a natural spring close to the garden. A fenced-in camping area provides a safe spot for those wishing to set up camp, and it comes equipped with basic kitchen facilities. 

Sultan Mehdi Shrine/Springs

The shrine of Baba Sultan Mehdi is located 26 kilometres from Khabeki Lake. A shaded path leads down to the prayer area of the Sufi saint. The hike takes about 15 to 20 minutes and is in the midst of mountains. The springs next to prayer area have crystal clear water and you can see tiny fish swimming inside. Secluded and quiet, Sultan Mehdi Springs is a zen place. The hike itself is a very humbling and spiritual experience. Definitely worth a visit.

Sakesar is the highest mountain in the valley and is home to a Pakistan Army airbase. The road up to the top of the mountain where the base is located is half an hour’s drive through dense forest. With panoramic picnic spots and a stunning walkway/hike that goes around the mountain, Sakesar is a nature lover’s dream. The walkway provides several viewing points of the entire valley, especially Uchali, from a height of 2,500 feet. If you plan on staying at Sakesar, bring your jackets and sweaters as it can get very cold.

Note: Civilians cannot visit Sakesar without permission. You need a reference of an active member of PAF to enter the base, preferably someone stationed at Sakesar.

Uchali Lake

Nestled in the shadow of the Sakesar Mountain, Uchali Lake is a popular tourist destination not only for its views but also because it attracts hundreds of migratory birds each year. Sunset or sunrise is the ideal time to visit the lake and soak in its natural beauty. If you can wake up in time, do catch the sunrise, a time when there are no tourists and the sky turns various spectacular shades of orange.

Don’t worry if you’re not an early riser – the sunset is even more breathtaking. The sun sets right in the middle of Sakesar Mountain, with the pristine waters of the lake mirroring its reflection. For those of you who want to up their selfie game, you can rent a boat to capture the view from the middle of the lake.

Tip: When visiting Uchali, take bird food with you. 

Daep Sharif Springs

Daep Sharif is located 10 kms from Uchali Lake and a 20-minute easy hike after you park the car. Hiking without a guide won’t be easy. Like Sultan Mehdi, Daep Sharif is also a secluded and serene place. It consists of a series of ponds that fall into the next one, making it a very dramatic landscape. If you continue up the trail you enter a grazing ground. After a dip at Daep Sharif, you can meditate in the ground as pastoral sounds of soothing cowbells echo in the valley around you.

Jahlar Lake

Jahlar Lake is the least visited lake of Soon Valley. Since there are no boating or fishing facilities at the lake, there are almost no tourists around, which makes it a place where you can experience a calm and naturally beautiful atmosphere. The water is acidic and it is said that you can wash your clothes in it without any detergent here, hence it’s not suitable for swimming.

Khewra Salt Mines

If you are exiting or entering the motorway from the Lilla interchange, the Khewra salt mines are just 29 kilometres away and definitely worth the detour. The world’s second largest salt mines provide a unique and surreal sightseeing experience through tunnels built into the massive structure that emit a warm glow radiating from the salt carvings. You can buy Himalyan pink salt and various items made of salt as souvenirs.

Bird Watching

Soon Valley is home to various native birds, while hundreds of migratory species also make it their refuge in the winter. October onwards is a good time for bird watchers to visit the area, especially the lakes, where they can view many varieties, including flamingos and wild ducks.

Cycling  

Soon Valley has a very easy terrain (not to mention some great views) with short inclines and declines, which is why you can plan cycling trips to various locations around the valley. 

Stay hydrated; carry a water bottle with you.

There are many ponds and springs in Soon Valley where you can take a refreshing plunge, such as: Daep Sharif, Neeli Dhann and Sultan Mehdi Springs.

Sunset/Sunrise Sights

Soon Valley is known for its spectacular sunsets and sunrises and the best place to catch these is around the many lakes.

Uchali Lake provides the best views.

The waterfall at Kanhatti has an easy hill that you can climb to watch the sunset. 

Khabeki Lake has a viewing platform and boardwalk that is ideal for families.

Khabeki Lake and Uchali Lake both provide boating facilities. 

Camping 

While the TDCP resorts in Soon Valley allow camping on their premises, Kanhatti Garden has a well-designated camping area with basic facilities. But come prepared, as you will not be able to get your hands on everyday supplies or emergency essentials in the area.

Proposed 3-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Exit from Lilla interchange, visit the Khewra mines and set up base at Khabeki. Watch the sunset.

Day 2: Breakfast at TDCP, drive and then hike down to Sultan Mehdi Springs for a picnic. Leave the springs by afternoon and drive to Kanhatti Garden, hike to the Kanhatti waterfall for a swim. Enjoy the sunset from the hilltop at the waterfall.

Day 3: Wake up and have breakfast at TDCP and then leave for Daep Sharif by the afternoon. Have a picnic and a swim or hike further at Daep Sharif. Then leave for Uchali to catch the sunset.

Soon  Sakesar  Valley Location

The entire way which leads towards Soon valley is full of amusing natural scenes. Soon Valley is located in the Northwest of Khushab District of Punjab. The valley lies between the Padhar village of dusty view of Thal desert to Sakesar which is the highest peak of Salt Range.

It’s the identity of the town Naushehra which is also its largest settlement. Naushehra is about 48 kilometers (30 mi) from Khushab District and 68 kilometers from Kallar Kahar town.

Uchali Lake

Having boating facility, Uchali lake is among the top tourist attractions in the valley of Soon. The highest mountain in the salt range, Sakasar ends at this lake. Its scenic beauty and the -calming effect of water make it an ideal place to spend time.

Jahlar Lake

One can experience the peace and natural beauty on visiting Jahlar lake and it creates a feeling of deep calm. It is one of the least visited lakes of the valley mainly kinda hidden because of its location. The lake is situated near the village Jahlar. Its area under water is approximately 148 acres. In winter, birds from distant places migrate to this lake and in summer they make their return back to the native countries. The water is strongly acidic and one can wash clothes with its water without any soup. This lake does not contain any facilities like boating or fishing.

Khabeki Lake

If you are going to visit Uchali Lake and coming from Kalar Kahar or Talagang side, then most probably you will pass this lake on your way (unless you take the Sodhi road route). The lake and the green area around provide a good scenery. Both Uchali and Khabeki lakes attract hundreds of migratory birds each year and are ideal haven for the bird watchers.

Daip Shareef

Beautiful springs, small pools, and ponds make this place additionally a great spiritual and calming point to visit. Dep Shareef is a sacred place for people across the village because of its association with  Sufi saint Hazrat Siraaj Ud Din Naqshbandi (R.A.). Kufri village is the way that leads to Dep Shareef. On arriving here, people get amused with sweet, clean and fresh water of springs.

Anmb Shareef

The fort and temples of Anmb Shareef are located in tehsil Quaidabad. These buildings hold a special interest for the archaeologists. Originally, the whole of this area was a fort in which there were one palace and two temples. Nowadays, only the palace and one temple exist. There used to be different statues in this fort but nothing is left of them now. The architecture of the temple is of Kashmiri style. The palace comprises of three floors but one can only approach the ground and the first floor.

Nurshingh Phowar

Nurshingh Phowaar is a place where one can find beautiful temples and lovely water springs. The temples still retain their original shape although rapidly deteriorating.

There is a beautiful waterfall, greenery, mind-blowing springs, and amazing archaeological sites including temples at this place. These days, this temple is under the department of Oqaaf. No care has been given to this place of Soon Valley, no funds are allocated and if it would remain unattended for long so chances are high, we would lose this precious historical site.

Tulhath Fort

A rocky track leads to the Tulhath fort which is located near Her Do Sodhi Baala on Kathwayi-Jahlar road. One has to travel by foot for about 1 and a half kilometers. According to Baba Sarwar Awan, this was a palace and there were canals for water in it. It looked more like a fort to us just like the Tulhath fort and Akrand fort. The reason is that it has not only a defensive wall but also built on a high mountain or cliff. A defensive wall built to protect the palace is still present along with the rock used as the gate.

Akrand fort is covered with thick and dense forest and only one way leads to the fort which is along the way to Kanhatti garden. That fort was built by the men of Raja Tataar Khan in order to defend the areas of Soon and Pakhar. The fort had stables for horses, houses and weapon stores which have now turned into ruins.

Kanhatti Gardens

Another attraction of Soon Valley, Kanhatti garden is home to stunningly beautiful waterfalls and marvelous views. There is a camping site too with a fireplace for the tourists. There are several nature trails for tourists for hiking or just to take in the beauty by foot.

PHOENIX — Carin León is bringing his ‘Boca Chueca Tour’ to the Valley!   “Embarking on this tour is an exhilarating opportunity to share my new music with fans throughout North America and Europe alike. Taking my songs and the vibrant essence of Música Mexicana to a global stage is truly an honor,” said Carin León in a news release sent to ABC15.

Some of the biggest hits of the Regional Mexican artist include:  La boda del Huitlacoche, Primera Cita, Según Quién, No Es Por Acá, El Tóxico and more.

León previously performed in the Valley back in September as part of his “Colmillo de Leche” tour.

The artist will be in the Valley soon for another performance, he’ll be opening for the Rolling Stones at State Farm Stadium on May 7.

León has created a new milestone in his career with the artistic Country & Regional Mexican crossover in the music industry that include the song ‘The One’ with Kane Brown and even singing with Walker Hayes .

• Concert date: Thursday, September 12.
