The best wineries to visit in Saint Emilion – a local’s guide

best wineries in Saint Emilion

Saint Emilion, one of the most prestigious wine regions in the world, is home to more than 800 wineries. Choosing which wineries to visit when traveling to Saint Emilion is not an easy task. So to help you out, I gathered a list of all the wineries I enjoyed visiting the most.

The Saint Emilion wine region consists of nine villages/towns: Saint-Émilion, Saint-Christophe des Bardes, Saint-Sulpice de Faleyrens, Saint-Hippolyte, Saint-Etienne de Lisse, Saint-Laurent des Combes, Saint-Pey d’Armens, Vignonet and parts of Libourne.

Best winerist to visit in Saint Emilion

My criteria when including chateaux in my list where

  • Great wine (obviously)
  • Beautiful properties
  • Welcoming chateaux owners and interesting tours

Other than that, I featured both small family-run properties and bigger châteaux which are labeled as a Grand grand cru classé. I highly recommend combining both types of chateaux on your visit.

Saint Emilion is also one of the most beautiful villages near Bordeaux . If time permits, dedicate a few hours to discovering this medieval little gem. To help you make it a perfect day I wrote a detailed article about the best things to do and eat in Saint Emilion .

If you’re planning to stay in Saint Emilion here’s my recommendation for hotels in and around the village .

If you’re traveling with kids, here’s my article about the most kid-friendly wineries in the Bordeaux region (including Saint Emilion). Also at the end of the article, there’s a great recommendation for discovering Saint Emilion with the little ones.

Important note – you need a car to reach most of the wineries mentioned in this article, here you can find the best offers.  There are a few wineries however which are a walking distance from the center of Saint Emilion. Check out my article about all the wineries you can visit by public transport in the Bordeaux region .

For those of you coming to Bordeaux in September, you should know that it’s the grapes harvest season. To learn more about what to expect during that period go to my article about the harvest season in Bordeaux and Saint Emilion . Also if you’re interested in discovering other regions of the Bordeaux wine area, check out my article about the Medoc wine route . Now let’s dig in!

Best wineries to visit in Saint Emilion

Chateau de pressac.

Best wineries to visit in Saint Emilion - Chateau de Pressac

Château de Pressac was probably one of my favorite winery visits thanks to its welcoming service and stunning view.

The Chateau dates back to the middle ages and over the years has changed many hands and architectural styles. Since 1997 it belongs to the Quenin family who has done extensive work to rebuild the winery.

The chateau has probably one of the most beautiful views in Saint Emilion. Standing there on the top of the cliff with a glass of wine was one of the highlights of my visits to Saint Emilion over these few years.

The winery offers different experiences from wine tasting to a discovery of their property. The wine of Château de Pressac is fantastic, but as it’s Grand cru classé the prices are quite high.

The chateau is open daily but you need to book the visit in advance.

Click here to book a tour online. Where: 66 Château de Pressac, 33330 Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse

Château Bernateau

Château Bernateau - one of the best wineries to visit in Saint Emilion

Château Bernateau is a family-run winery owned by the 11th generation of the Lavau family.

The tour is run by the lovely Karine who is married to one of the sons running the family business. The visit, which lasts around an hour and a half, takes you from the vineyard to the glass.

On the tour, you’ll discover a variety of old (60 yo) vines together with baby ones. You also get to visit their beautiful gravity vat house and taste wine from different years and styles.

It’s a beautiful property with a green and charming garden and a small playhouse for kids. A perfect place for a relaxed visit which you can also end with a picnic in the garden.

They are open daily and offer tours in English and French. Tour prices range from 6 to 25 euros. Click here to book a tour online. Address: Château Bernateau, 33330 Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse

Château Coutet

Château Coutet in Saint Emilion

This elegant château is located about 20 minutes walk from the center of Saint-Émilion. The property has been handed down from generation to generation since the 17th century leading to a rich history of 400 years.

Today, the family’s 14th generation lives on the property and runs the winemaking business. The David-Beaulieu family is very welcoming and they guide the tours themselves giving a very personal feel to it.

One of the features that won me over is their amazing garden with its own pond and ducks. This picturesque scenery combined with the excellent wine made it one of the best wineries to visit in Saint Emilion.

This is also one of the best wineries to visit with kids . Mine absolutely adored the garden and didn’t want to leave.

There are two tours to choose from:  The “Tradition” ( 14€) includes the history of the estate, a visit to the winery and the family cellar, and wine tasting. And the “Prestige” visit (40€), which is for 8 people max, also includes a tour through the vineyards and an exploration of Coutet’s treasures.

Book your visit at Chateau Coutet.

Address: Coutet, 33330 Saint-Émilion

Château La Croizzille

Chateau La Croizzille - one of the wineries to visit in Saint Emilion

Château la Croizille offers a fascinating journey combining old and new. The modern château stands right next to the traditional Château of Tour Baladoz, owned by the same family.

This tour allows you to discover the differences between the traditional techniques and the innovative ones for which Château la Croizille is known for. One of the highlights of this tour is the amazing view from the tasting room overlooking the vineyards from the top.

The basic tour is offered daily and includes modern cellars and tastings.

Click here to book a tour at Château la Croizille .

Address: lieu-dit Baladoz, 33330 Saint-Laurent des Combes (Saint-Emilion)

Château Beaurang

Château Beaurang in Saint Emilion

The Beaurang winery is located in the southern part of Saint-Émilion, about 5 km from the center. This isn’t a fancy château, but if you’re looking for a warm family welcome and great wine this is the right place for you.

Claude Puyol and his daughter Delphine represent the third and fourth generations in this artisanal wine-making family. A family with a beautiful history they love sharing with their guests.

Claude’s grandparents immigrated to France from Spain in the early 20th century. For many years they worked as simple workers in the vineyards of Saint Emilion. But eventually, we were able to save enough to buy their own château and produce wine.

The visit will teach you quite a lot about the wine in the region and about the life of a winemaker. During the tour, Claude elaborated on the beauty and struggles of wine growers in a conservative region like Saint Emilion.

The tours are offered every day from 10:00 to 12:00 and from 14:00 to 18:00. They offer the visit for free but require a reservation. Email them to book a tour: [email protected] Website: https://www.chateau-beaurang.com/ Address: Château Beaurang, 1, Beaurang, 33330 Saint-Emilion

Chateau Cadet Bon

Château Cadet Bon is one of the hilly vineyards surrounding Saint Emilion. It’s a relatively small winery, occupying 7 hectares and producing classic Saint Emilion wine since 1867.

Since 2001, the chateau is owned by Michele and Guy Richard who completely renovated the property.

The wine they produce is labeled as Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classé, which means they follow tighter production restrictions. In 2017, the owners have started the transformation to creating only organic wines.

Chateau Cadet Bon in the center of Saint Emilion - winery to visit

Château Cadet Bon is located just a few minutes walk from the center of Saint Emilion, which makes it another great option for a winery to visit by public transport .

The winery offers several tours. The small group tour includes a tasting of two wines accompanied by a detailed explanation.

The second tour offers a comparative experience where you get to also taste other wines from Saint Emilion and Pomerol and compare them to Château Cadet Bon.

They also offer a wine-tasting course, an amazing opportunity to deepen your understanding of how to properly taste wine.

You can book each one of these activities here .

Address: Au Cadet, 33330 Saint-Émilion.

Château Soutard

Chateau Soutard in saint emilion

At a mere 10-minute walk from the center of Saint-Émilion stands the impressive 18th-century Château Soutard . If visiting a beautiful château is high on your list, this is one of your best options.

Since 2006, its owned by La Mondiale company, so it lacks the cozy family feel that other wineries on this list offer. But it’s a very popular and highly rated experience.

The Château offers plenty of fun activities such as a wine blending workshop, biking in the vineyards, a gourmet picnic, and of course, wine tours.

Their basic wine tour English starts at 15h every day from April to October. If you speak French, you can take a French tour at 11:30 and 16:30 daily. The tour includes a visit to their vineyards and cellars and tastings of their renowned Grand Cru Classé wines. No reservation is required but it’s highly recommended, you can reserve by email: [email protected].

Address: Soutard, 33330 Saint-Émilion

Château Cantenac

Château Cantenac - wine touring and tasting in Saint Emilion

Château Cantenac is a charming family-run winery built in 1870. The estate is located about 3.5 km from the center of Saint Emilion.

Since 1937 the winery is owned by the Roskam-Brunot family, which are now in their 3rd and 4th generations of winemakers. The family is very friendly and their tours are rich with knowledge about the winemaking process.

The tours are guided by a family member, who is really passionate about their heritage and wine. What I loved most about this tour was the tasting part, which was a great comparative and educational experience.

The winery offers two tours: The one-hour classic tour (10 € / per person) and the Prestige tour ( 30 € / per person ) which also includes some snacks and more wine. You can visit the château from Monday to Friday upon reservation. Click here to book the tour directly through their site.

Website: https://www.chateau-cantenac.fr/histoire/la-famille-roskam/ Address: 2 locality Cantenac, 33330 Saint-Emilion

Château de Ferrand

st emilion wine tour from st emilion

Another impressive château on our list is Château de Ferrand, located about 6km from the center of Saint-Émilion. Part of the tour will include the history of the Château which dates back to the 17th century.

The wine is a Grand Cru Classé and with its 32-hectare, it’s considered a big winery in the Saint-Émilion wine region. During the tour, you’ll get to visit the vineyard and its big wine cellars. While many of the wineries on this list have a family feeling to them this one is a bit different. It’s much more professional and the wine-tasting part is conducted by a professional sommelier who will teach you how to taste wine.

Tour prices range between 15 and 35 euros depending on the number of glasses you’re going to taste. Click here to book a visit. Address: Château  de Ferrand, Saint-Hippolyte, 33330 Saint Emilion

Château Villemaurine

Château Villemaurine in Saint Emilion

If you come to Saint-Émilion by train and you really don’t want to leave the village, Château Villemaurine is perfect for you as it’s a short walking distance from the village center. The Château combines tradition, modernity, centuries of history, and the refined production of great wines. Château Villemaurine offers three guided tours. The first one is a group discovery tour (15€ / person) where you get to visit the vineyards and the monolithic cellars which are located underneath the vines of the estate. Second is the Heritage tour (15€ / person ) where you will discover the stunning network of quarries owned by the Château Villemaurine. Last is a private tour (45€ / person) which is personally designed for wine enthusiasts.  All the tours include wine tasting at the end. Click here to book the tour online. Address: 23 Villemaurine-Sud, Saint-Émilion

Visiting with kids

tourist train in Saint Emilion

If you’re visiting Saint-Émilion with kids and you’re afraid that a visit to a winery will bore them, take the train tour. The little train leaves every 45 minutes from Espace Villemaurine (next to the bus parking). It’s a 35 minutes tour (7€ / person) that takes you through the vineyards and the big châteaux of Saint-Émilion. If you wish to combine that with a winery visit, the 11€ tour includes a stop at Chateau Rochebelle and its stunning, beautifully lit monolithic cellars (with wine tastings at the end). The tickets can be bought in the tourist office in Saint-Émilion or online (24 hours in advance).  For all the details and to book a train tour click here .

Discover all the other wineries you can visit with kids in the Bordeaux region .

If you’re planning to stay the night in Saint Emilion, here are my recommendations for the best hotels and B&Bs in and around Saint Emilion .

Now for the more practical part. While some châteaux will welcome spontaneous visitors, most of the wineries require prior reservations. So be sure to book the tours in advance. In addition, unless you’re coming during the summer, some of the châteaux are closed on the weekends, so if you have the chance, try visiting during the week. Lastly, while visiting Saint-Émilion is a beautiful experience any time of the year, there are some months that are less recommended for wine tours. During the winter (from December to March) and especially in January when it gets cold, many wineries are closed for visits. September is one of the most interesting times in the area as it’s the harvest season but take into account that many small châteaux don’t have enough staff to offer tours during that time so make sure to contact the château in advance.

Saint-Émilion is the queen of wine tourism and one article cannot possibly cover all the tours you can take in the area. In this article, I simply wanted to highlight some of the tours I personally enjoyed and offer a variety of both big and small châteaux to help my readers plan their trip to the area. Hope you liked it 🙂

I just wanted to thank you for this article. I found it so helpful and visited several of these suggested places in St-Emilion this past weekend! I have two young children, and I appreciated your thoughtfulness on choosing places and activities with kids in mind…it definitely made a difference for us! Doing a general search for chateaux in the area was so overwhelming, with over 850 to choose from, so this cross-section was a great first experience and introduction to it all!

Emily I’m so so happy to hear that!!! I always travel with my kids as well and it took me some time to find places that are kids friendly, so I know the struggle 🙂 Thank you so much for coming back here to comment 🙂

What are the most famous wines of Saint Emilion?

Saint Emilion is best known for its reds. Specifically, the wines which come from the Merlot grapes as well as blends or other varieties closely related to Merlots. Many of the vineyards and wines are called “Grand Cru” this means that the wines or the winemakers are of superior quality. The reality is though that this classification does not actually have a measurable value.

One of the most popular and sought after Saint Emilion wine makers is Château Cheval Blanc. Their bottles can often go for hundreds, if not thousands of dollars depending on the vintage (the year the wine was produced).

When is the best time of year to visit Saint Emilion?

Saint Emilion has a lot to offer year round, but the best for Saint Emilion wineries to visit is in the shoulder seasons. That is the springtime — May, June, and even into early July, as well as autumn — September and October especially.

Both of these periods are amazing times to see the vineyards and the grapes. In the spring, the vines are just starting to come to life after a long winter and are full of small, white, budding flowers before they begin to turn into the tiniest little baby grapes.

Come autumn the grapes are ready to harvest, so you can catch them either as they are big and heavy and full on the vines, or as the fields are busy with people working to get the harvest in, process, and into a bottle for your next drink.

About St. Emilion Wine Tours

Each wine region in France has a distinct personality due to varied terrain, regional differences, and grape varietals. St. Emilion is no different. This region specializes in red wines — more specifically, Merlots and Cabernet Francs. However, it’s not uncommon to also find Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.

When preparing for a Saint-Emilion wine tour, you might hear talks of Grand Cru, Premier Grand Cru, and Grand Cru Classe. While quite complex, it means that the winery’s vines are located in these classified areas. These were introduced in Bordeaux in 1855 and used in Saint Emilion since 1955 to classify the terroirs and vineyards according to quality.

The Saint Emilion Grand Cru rankings are revisited every 10 years.

If you don’t want to build your own self-guided wine tour to the wine areas of Bordeaux, I suggest booking a private wine tour through B for Bordeaux, a wine tour company run by Berit Simonsen, who is very knowledgeable and works closely with the wineries to ensure your visit is great.

With this tour, the whole process is up to you. You can decide where to go yourself, or have Berit take care of all the details for you. You can book one day or 5 days – it’s entirely up to you.

Here’s a recent customer review: “We considered a few options for a day tour of the Medoc but chose Berit on the basis of her great communication, responsiveness, reasonable rate and her flexibility in meeting our requirements. Our expectations were fully met, even exceeded.”

Self-Guided Touring

I personally prefer to do self-guided touring when I visit wine regions because it gives me the greatest flexibility and I actually really like researching and choosing the wineries I want to go to.

While there is a little more work involved because you have to set up all the tours yourself, there are tools that will help make this super easy. The one I use is called Rue des Vignerons . It’s a French website that makes booking wine appointments super easy.

The site has 450 wineries and distilleries, both family-owned and famous houses, that includes 1,500 bookable experiences, including tastings, tours, workshops, and meals. You can book online up to 30 minutes before and your appointment is confirmed instantly. This is the website I used to book all of my Bordeaux tasting appointments.

In our descriptions below, I will give you links directly to Rue des Vignerons for each winery so you can easily book it.

Top Saint-Emilion Wineries to Visit

Chateau de Candale

Chateau de Candale

This is one of the few chateaux that offer lunch and dinner. While it’s a bit farther from the center of town, it’s worth the drive. The restaurant l’Atelier de Candale, is owned by a famous winemaker and cooper, Jean Louis Vicard.

With 4 properties, 2 Grands Crus Classés, 1 restaurant, 1 boutique, and unique wine tourism trails, Château de Candale has everything a visitor is looking for in Bordeaux charm and experiences.

The outdoor patio is perfect for al fresco dining with a view of the vineyards. You can also take a tour and have a tasting. A tasting alone costs 10€. Tour and tastings range from 18 to 30€. Château de Pressac

Château de Pressac, a Grand cru classé since 2012, is a prestigious winery of St Emilion with a strong medieval history. The Chateau was built in the 14th century. The first grape variety which was used for their wines was the “Noir de Pressac”, which is now called “Malbec”.

It offers the best views of the whole of Saint Emilion from up on a hill. That alone should warrant a visit. But if you’d love to taste their wines, you can’t go wrong with a tour that takes you along the historic property, cellars, and barrels.

To conclude the tour, you’ll also get a special wine tasting of four of their wines that includes a blind tasting with savory pairings. Tour and tasting costs 25€ and lasts 1 hour.

Note: Tours by appointment only

Château Cadet Bon

The Château Cadet Bon is a famous Grand cru classé winery with a biological / organic approach. Its wines are composed of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Their vines are located on one of the most typical terroirs of St Emilion, so you can taste the quintessential wine of the area. The soil is composed of three types of minerals which provide the wine’s complexity.

A wine tour and tasting with 3 vintages is 13.50€ and lasts 1 hour 30 minutes. You can also do a tour and comparative tasting of different wines for 19€ or take a full tasting course to unlock the key to tasting wine for 60€ (2h30min).

Château Bernateau

The Château Bernateau is a family-owned winery with 8 generations of winegrowers. The winery has an organic approach and is located 5 minutes from the medieval city, on a beautiful spot that has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

There are tours and tasting available along with a guided walk through the vineyard. At the end of the tour, you will taste several vintages of two of their Saint Emilion Grands Crus wines. You can book a tasting alone for 6€ or a tour and tasting lasting 1h30 or 2hrs and ranging in price from 10€ to 25€.

Chateau Grangey

Château Grangey

Château Grangey is family owned organci winery just 5km from St Emilion. It was built 3 centuries ago and has a strong history. Franck and Elodie (the winegrowers) describe themselves as wine lovers who are happy to share their passion with visitors and to invite them into their world.

Their tour and tasting is 15€ or 40€ with a vertical tasting of their premier wine, Château Grangey. Both experiences last for 1 hour and you’ll visit the cellar where the barrels, casks and amphorae are housed.

Château Beau Séjour Bécot

This is an iconic chateau of St Emilion, awarded “Premier Grand Cru classé”. The setting and experience are breathtaking, exactly as you would hope for a Bordeau winery. The Becot Family, who have been established in ST Emilion since the French Revolution, bought the winery in 1969 and it was classified as a Premier Cru in 1996.

The soil of the vines has an exceptional terroir composed of calcaire, which is very unique. They also have 7 hectares of ancient limestone quarries that form a perfect cellar for tens of thousands of bottles of wine. The wine tours and tasting are more expensive here (from 41€), but it’s worth it.

Chateau Guadet

Chateau Guadet

This chateau is a small, family-run winery right in the heart of Saint-Emilion. It has been in the family for many generations. There is a really extensive and incredible underground cave cellar that you can tour, which ends in a wonderful tasting of their Grand Cru Classe wine.

Chateau Chauvin

Château Chauvin, a Grand Cru Classé since 1955, has belonged since 2014 to the Cazes-Régimbeau family, who are also co-owners of the famous Château Lynch-Bages in Pauillac, a pioneer in wine tourism, which has been receiving numerous visitors for decades.

Just 40 km from the centre of Bordeaux, this small family estate offers a friendly stopover with a visit to the new cellars. Click below to book a tour and tasting.

Chateau Franc Mayne

Château Franc Mayne is a Grand Cru Classé in Saint Emilion. They do traditional farming with horses on sloping plots, manual harvest and sorting, and plot vinification in order to ensure the best yield and quality. A former post house proves that pilgrims used to come here on their way to Santiago de Compostela.

Chateau Fombrauge

The name Fombrauge comes from “Fons brogiera”, which means “water source surrounded by heathers and bushes”. The water source that garnered the name of this Grand Cru Classé still exist and is located at the heart of the vineyard. This is one of the largest wineries in Saint-Emilion, with more than 5860 hectares.

Chateau Mauvinon

Located just 4km from the famous medieval village of St Emilion, Chateau Mauvinon is a lovely family owned estate of the prestigious Saint Emilion appellation classified as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. The winery offers a simple tasting of 2 or 4 wines, or you can book a walk in the vineyards, a visit of the vat house and a commented tasting of 3 wines paired with 3 cheeses to better understand wine and food pairing.

Chateau de la Dominique

Chateau La Dominique

Dating to the 16th century, Château La Dominique is a Grands Crus Classés winery a short drive from the city center.

The current owner, Jean-Claude Fayat, has been walking the grounds since he was 11. Today, he and his team ensure the grape variety vines of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon always cultivate exceptional wines.

The most basic tour is the La Dominique’s Delicacies tour which sees you tasting their wines paired with Chocolaterie Maëlig’s chocolates. You can also take a VIP, private, and blind-tasting tour. Besides the wine tasting, all four tours also show you around the estate.

How to Get to Bordeaux’s Wine Regions

Bordeaux is an easy city to reach, as it is very well connected with the rest of Europe . It is just a few hours’ train ride from Paris, making it an easy side trip.

I’m not aware of any direct flights from the U.S. to Bordeaux, but there are a lot of connecting flight options (which is great news for anyone looking to take advantage of a  free stopover in another major European city).

Once you’ve landed in Bordeaux, you can take a bus or the tram into the city center, or rent a car and drive to the countryside to visit the Chateaux.

If your goal is wine tasting and going on Bordeaux vineyard tours, then a car is a necessity. Not that you can’t get around by public transpiration, but it will take you so much longer. We recommend booking a car through Discover Cars . They collect and display the best car rental deals and they’re very easy to work with.

Charlotte and I would like to visit the Chateau Orisse Du Casse vineyard and wondered if you could arrange this – ideally in July

Jeremy, unfortunately I’m not a travel agent so I can’t book anything for you. If it’s a winery that can be visited, perhaps try to contact them directly.

Hello Laura, Excellent article and very useful information. Do you happen to know which winery is the closest walking distance to the centre? We would like to fit a tour or wine tasting during our day out in Bordeaux and walking will be ideal. If it is not recommended because of distance, we will contact Discover Cars. Many thanks

Do you mean from Bordeaux centre? I think you’d be better off walking to a wine bar, like Le Bar a Vin or Max Bordeaux. If you mean Saint Emilion, then Chateau Guadet and Chateau Cardinal-Villamaurine are within easy walking distance.

Visitor comments

  • "The caves/cellars were amazing! We learnt a lot about the classification of red wine in the region, from the 'Cru' to 'Grand Cru' to 'Grand Cru Classe'! The tasting was small, but very informative - how to drink, what to look out for - colour, tannins, taste. It was very genuine and not at all pretentious." - Trip Advisor
  • "Had a great day and very hot !!!! Well worth the ride around the various Chateaus. Great guide who was very pleasant. Would recommend." - Trip Advisor
  • "If you don't have much time the "rail" trip is ideal. The cobbled streets of the township and the wine caves, restaurants, wine stores and old buildings are all an experience on its own, but the "train" allows a wider view of the lovely Chateau and vineyards surrounding St Emillion. You have the option to stop off at a vineyard and I'd highly recommend you do." - Trip Advisor

Visit Saint-Emilion, France

Saint-Emilion is a charming town in the heart of Bordeaux’s Wine Region . It is a mecca for wine lovers due to the massive presence of wine châteaux. Not by chance, Saint-Emilion, France, is the first place in the world to have had a grape variety listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site!

Saint-Emilion is located 48 kilometers east of Bordeaux . Besides producing world-renowned wines, Saint-Emilion features stunning monuments and Michelin-starred restaurants.

Saint-Emilion makes one of the best day trips from Bordeaux . The most popular way to do it is by joining one of the guided wine tours from Bordeaux available in this area, but it is also possible to visit Saint-Emilion by train.

Keep reading to discover how to visit Saint-Emilion with our top tips!

Saint Emilion - France

Saint-Emilion Wine

st emilion wine tour from st emilion

Bordeaux Saint-Emilion is one of the most famous wine areas in France and worldwide. It is located in Bordeaux’s so-called “Right Bank” zone at the northeastern end of the wine region. Saint-Emilion vineyards produce distinguished wines, and it has more than 600 producers.

Bordeaux Saint-Emilion wines are predominantly made from Merlot and Cabernet Franc and range from fragrant and delicate flavors to enveloping and powerful ones. This difference is mainly due to the different soil properties.

The very best Saint-Emilion wines are classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé A, and only four châteaux are at this level: Château Angelus, Château Cheval Blanc, Château Ausone, and Château Pavie.

The other châteaux produce Premier Grand Cru Classé B or Grand Cru Classé wines.

Unlike the  Loire Valley Castles  or the  Medieval Castles in Dordogne , the Châteaux in Saint-Emilion were not the homes to kings or nobles. The Châteaux in Saint Emilion are big private mansions built from the 18th century onwards, and they have the particularity to have in-sight vineyards and host the whole process of Bordeaux wine production, from grape harvesting to wine bottling.

The “château” concept in Bordeaux is related to wine production, not the building’s history or architecture. In other words, if they don’t do the entire wine production process on-site, these buildings cannot be called “châteaux.”

St Emilion Wine Tours from Bordeaux

st emilion wine tour from st emilion

The perfect way to visit Saint-Emilion is by joining a Saint-Emilion wine tour combining sightseeing and wine tasting.

The best perk of doing a Saint-Emilion wine tour from Bordeaux is that it often includes pick-up from central Bordeaux, and you will spend the drive in the comfort of a minivan, so you can taste as many wines as you want.

Saint-Emilion wine tours usually include visiting at least one of the best Châteaux in St Emilion with an expert sommelier who will teach you all about the grapes grown in the estate and how the wine production works before accompanying you to the tasting.

In general, St Emilion wine tours will focus on wine rather than sightseeing, so you will have limited time to explore Saint-Emilion town. For instance, these tours rarely include visiting the fantastic Saint-Emilion underground heritage.

The typical things to do in Saint Emilion during a Bordeaux to Saint-Emilion wine tour are a stroll around the Medieval Town and a visit to the Cordeliers Cloister . Don’t miss the panoramic views over the Saint-Emilion Vineyards from the King’s Tower and from the viewpoint just in front of the Collegiate Church.

CHÂTEAU PAVIE & CHÂTEAU MONBOUSQUET

ST. ÉMILION, BORDEAUX, FRANCE 2020

This week’s Wine Spectator Insider, which dropped yesterday, featured high-scoring wines from around the world that may be difficult to find, but are worth seeking out. We happen to have two of them, both stunning Saint-Émilions from the 2020 vintage: Château Pavie and Château Monbousquet.

The publication was effusive in praise for the 2020 Pavie, awarding 96 points and describing its “stunning fruit, with loganberry, blackberry and boysenberry compote notes moving through steadily, carried by a deeply embedded chalk spin.” Of the 95-point Monbousquet, James Molesworth wrote “ Everything stays in lockstep through the very long finish.” These two wines perfectly represent the greatness of the 2020 vintage in Bordeaux, especially on the Right Bank. Concierge special pricing will last for one week only, so don’t delay in securing these special wines!

Our Guarantee: We always buy and source directly from the estate, so rest assured: your wines will arrive in your hands with pristine provenance.

*Offer NOT valid in-store. This offer is made pre-arrival, with wines estimated to be delivered to your preferred store in Summer 2024 . With the supply chain issues that we are seeing globally, there may be some unforeseen delays which could affect the ETA. All sale prices are the lowest available at Total Wine & More and ONLY valid through Concierge Sales. No further discounts or coupons may be applied. Offer not valid in KS, MI, NY or TN. This offer is for ONE WEEK, or until sold out, and will expire on Wednesday, April 17th, 2024.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
