Star Trek: USS Defiant, Explained

A t the heart of Star Trek is the will of Starfleet officers to defy the odds when they’re stacked against them, and nothing symbolizes this fighting spirit quite like the USS Defiant. Ships are pivotal to the lofty goals of the Federation. The first crew couldn’t have set out to boldly explore the galaxy without one. Starfleet would never have made First Contact if they lacked the means to even leave Earth in the first place. From scientific missions to duking it out in space for the very soul of galactic democracy, there is no feat that cannot be accomplished with a good engine and an even better warp factor.

But the USS Defiant holds a special place in the heart of many. William T. Riker (Jonathan Frakes) once called it a “tough little ship,” which is both accurate and the understatement of the century. The USS Defiant was indeed tough despite its small size, or maybe even because of it. However, it was also pivotal in various battles fought by the Deep Space 9 crew. It may have been built to withstand all manner of attack, but it was also built to last, and it’s done so long enough to create quite the legacy.

The USS Defiant Versus the Borg

These days, the USS Defiant is known among Star Trek fans as having been vital during the Dominion War of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . Season 7, episode 8, “The Siege of AR-558,” was only one example of the small ship being taken out on relief missions by officers like Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks), Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig), Lt. Commander Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell), and Ensign Nog (Aron Eisenberg).

Despite its successful career, though, the USS Defiant had a rather rocky beginning. It was supposed to enable the crew of Star Trek: The Next Generation to defend itself in battle after First Contact with the Borg proved fatal. Instead, features provided to make it dangerous to enemies of the Federation only made it a threat to those unfortunate enough to be inside of it when the engines were first tested. This must have been before Chief Miles O’Brien (Colm Meaney) got his capable hands on them.

Features of the USS Defiant

The USS Defiant is designed with a circular body and an elongated front, similar to a Klingon warbird. While it’s smaller than a Starfleet runabout, it can hold a crew of around 200 officers. The battleship is introduced in the season 3 premiere of Deep Space Nine as needing of a lot of internal work. It initially only possesses the basic features, such as deflector shields, photon torpedoes, and a warp drive.

What makes the USS Defiant such a uniquely combat-capable ship , though, is that it's later updated with Ablative armor coating and a cloaking device. The armor coating acts like a shield, but is more able to withstand direct attacks. The cloaking device is a little more controversial, as it was loaned to Starfleet by the Romulan government and its use was limited to the Gamma Quadrant. To be the best, the USS Defiant needed some pretty wicked features, and it got them exactly when the crew needed them most.

The USS Defiant Versus the Maquis

Deep Space Nine wasn’t afraid of hijinks, but it was even less afraid of dealing with complex issues and involving the USS Defiant in the process. The Maquis were a rebellious force determined to emancipate itself from the Cardassian government. It doesn’t get darker than a group of former Starfleet officers and ex-Federation colonists resorting to terrorist-like activity to establish their own independent state. Even darker, somehow, were the increasingly disturbing lengths taken to defeat them.

That’s where the USS Defiant comes in. Season 5, episode 13, “For the Uniform,” marks one of the first times in Star Trek history that a captain is willing to sacrifice living beings to defeat an enemy. Captain Sisko threatens to launch biochemical weapons at a Maquis settlement from the helm of the USS Defiant. Ex-Security Officer / Maquis leader Michael Eddington (Ken Marshall) calls his bluff. But the captain isn’t lying, and he proceeds to follow through, sacrificing the lives of many in the process. The plan works exactly as Captain Sisko planned, and the leader turns himself in. But one has to wonder if the results of saving Cardassian lives were worth the deadly method.

The USS Defiant Saves the Day

Questionable use aside, the USS Defiant really showed what it could do in the heat of the moment. In season 6 of Deep Space Nine , the chips are down and the Dominion War is continuing to rack up an already-high body count in one of the bloodiest battles in Star Trek . In season 6, episode 6, “Sacrifice of Angels,” Captain Sisko takes the USS Defiant into the Celestial Temple in a desperate attempt to convince the Prophets to protect Bajor from a Dominion attack. He pleads:

“You want to be Gods? Then be Gods! I need a miracle – Bajor needs a miracle. Stop those ships!”

The Prophets eventually agree but vaguely allude (as they do) to a price he’ll have to pay later on. Before Sisko can find out what that is, he’s transported back to the USS Defiant and then later greeted by grateful Bajorans back on Deep Space 9. This miracle turns the tide of the war in favor of the Federation and its allies, though a full surrender from Dominion forces is a long way coming.

The USS Defiant has played an iconic role in Star Trek history. Its first appearance officially marked the Federation’s willingness to prioritize the needs of a battle over its scientific goals. It has saved lives, and taken them. It has been beaten and defeated almost as much as it’s emerged victorious from bloody battles. The USS Defiant was introduced in Star Trek: First Contact , but earned its pips for its service throughout Deep Space Nine . Star Trek: Prodigy brings the USS Defiant back into action, while Picard sees it finally docked at the Starfleet Fleet Museum run by Commodore Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton).

The Defiant will probably continue to make appearances for as long as it may be needed, whether it's active among the stars or laid to rest for new generations to learn of its importance in the survival of the Federation. After all these years, it seems like Star Trek just can’t let the USS Defiant go.

Kira exhausted

Major Kira exhausted

Kira enjoying herself

Bashir ordering Kira to enjoy herself

In Ops , Major Kira Nerys is having a bad day , swamped with the numerous little details of running a space station . She has problems to handle the cargo of the five Byzatium transports , gets information about the changed schedule of the Byzallian conference , and is informed about a Starfleet requested complete report about the computer calibration subroutine until tomorrow.

At the infirmary , she snaps at Doctor Bashir when he starts complaining to her about the colonization schedule on Campor III . Realizing that she is stressed from overwork, he uses his position as Chief Medical Officer and orders her to take time off; reminding her that not even Commander Sisko can overrule his judgement.

Bashir takes Kira to Quark's and tells her to enjoy herself with at least two things Quark serves her including a holosuite program , a jumja stick , Karvino juice , Lorvan crackers , and gambling token . After resisting first, Kira starts to accept this order. But she is not alone for long as Commander Riker stands nearby at the bar's entrance and asks to join her, hoping she has some room for the unexpected.

Act One [ ]

Tom Riker, Kira, and Dax

Riker in Ops

In Commander Sisko's office, Riker tells Sisko that he is on vacation and wanted to visit the station again before continuing his travel on to Risa . Outside the office in Ops, Lieutenant Dax notices that Kira is preoccupied by a certain Commander, though she doesn't want to admit it. When Riker comes out of Sisko's office, Dax makes a reference to their last meeting in Quark's which he does not remember until she reminds Riker that she staked three strips of latinum when his winning streak ran dry.

Kira runs into Riker

Kira running into Riker on the Promenade

Riker hangs around the Promenade waiting for Kira to get off duty so he can arrange to "accidentally" run into her. Hesitant at first, she offers him a tour of the station and then at his suggestion, she agrees to show him the USS Defiant . Kira and Riker both enter an authorization code and handprints at the identification panel to enter the Defiant . Lieutenant Jones stands guard outside the airlock.

Kira stunned

Major Kira stunned by a phaser

Aboard the Defiant , they find Chief Miles O'Brien working on the bridge trying to improve the vessel's deflector targeting arrays and Riker is none too happy to see him, implying that they have had some falling out. O'Brien is stunned by Riker's cold demeanor. He has no idea what he has done to offend his former first officer but excuses himself rather than intrude on the two of them. Kira, too, is surprised but does not press when Riker says he does not want to talk about it.

She shows him the modifications they have made to the ship's systems, especially the weapons system . Riker asks to access them at the tactical station and, obligingly, Kira uses her authorization code "Kira delta 547 alpha" to release the bridge lockout . This is what Riker wanted and he then stuns Kira with a phaser . While she is unconscious, he arranges for Tamal and Kalita to beam aboard.

Riker removing his beard

Tom Riker removing his false beard

A red alert sounds in Ops as the computer shows an imminent warp core breach aboard the Defiant . Riker contacts them from the Defiant bridge, saying there was an accident and Kira was injured and that if they release the docking clamps , he will take the helm of the Defiant and clear it away from the station. Sisko agrees and will beam them out when they are clear. O'Brien arrives, responding to the red alert. When Sisko orders him to beam Riker and Kira out, O'Brien cannot because the Defiant 's shields are up. Before any of them can react, the Defiant goes to warp .

On the Defiant , Riker has Kalita set a course for the Badlands . He removes his false sideburns ; he is Lieutenant Thomas Riker . Kalita congratulates Tom on his successful commandeering of the Defiant – but he says it is not over yet.

Act Two [ ]

Dukat briefed by Odo

Dukat briefed by Odo and Sisko

Gul Dukat is summoned to a briefing in the wardroom where Odo explains how a transporter accident created a transporter duplicate of William T. Riker on Nervala IV nine years ago . Dukat is "entertained" by this until they tell him that they suspect Thomas Riker is with the Maquis , having expressed support of them while serving on the USS Gandhi . Dukat is furious that such a dangerous weapon of the Federation may now be used to attack Cardassia . Sisko proposes a joint search mission of the Demilitarized Zone , but Dukat says Central Command would use this incident as an excuse to eradicate the Maquis instead. Starfleet would then send a fleet to protect the colonies . War seems inevitable. Sisko agrees to go with Dukat to Cardassia Prime and help them find the Defiant , and if necessary, destroy it.

Riker apologizes to Kira for the deception but he will not be deterred. The Defiant meets with other Maquis ships . They transfer over a crew and then they all head for the Federation-Cardassian border .

Act Three [ ]

Cardassian war room

The Cardassian War Room

Sisko and Dukat arrive on Cardassia Prime, where the search will be conducted from the Cardassian War Room , the heart of the Cardassian military where Sisko also meets the Obsidian Order observer Korinas who secures all information from intelligence reports after noticing the Human in this secured area.

She asks Sisko for the exact specifications and armament of the Defiant but Sisko stops her request. He reveals that the Defiant is equipped with a loaned Romulan cloaking device . While this is news to Dukat, Korinas says that the Order already knew about it but was hitherto unconcerned that it would be used against Cardassia. Sisko says he can provide partial specifications of an anti-proton beam that the Dominion used to penetrate the cloak.

Kira sabotaging the defiant

Kira working on sabotaging the cloak of the Defiant

Under Maquis control, the Defiant passes the security perimeter into the Almatha sector and enters Cardassian territory . After the ship attackes Cardassian Outpost 61 , Dukat orders the fleet of the Sixth Order under the command of Gul Toran to chase the Defiant back into the Demilitarized Zone , but Sisko realizes that the warp signature is wrong, it is a decoy . Dukat recalls Toran's ships but it is too late. The real Defiant uncloaks and destroys Outpost 47 , before cloaking again, its heading takes them into the heart of the Cardassian Union . Korinas leaves with a parting shot at Dukat.

Aboard the Defiant , Riker sets a course for Omekla III and its shipyard . Meanwhile, Kira manages to sabotage the cloak from her quarters by crossing the replicator power converter with the plasma manifold , blowing off two plasma conduits and suffering minor injuries to her shoulder.

Act Four [ ]

Defiant hiding in nebula

The Defiant hiding in a nebula

Kira talking to Riker

Kira trying to reach Riker

Tamal treats Kira's injuries. Riker takes her to the bridge where they can keep an eye on her. While they repair the damage she caused, they hide the Defiant in a nearby nebula .

Sisko plots strategy but Dukat is distracted. This is his son Mekor 's eleventh birthday and he wanted his father to take him to an amusement center at Lakarian City . Sisko commiserates, noting that he himself had disappointed his own son from time to time, but it is part of his and Dukat's profession, and he hopes one day his son will understand. Dukat is not encouraged, instead predicting that his son will remember this day with hatred as the only thing he'll remember is a Federation officer on a Federation ship is invading his home and kept his father away from his birthday, something he finds sad.

Korinas protecting orias

Korinas threatening Dukat

Kira sees that the Maquis target is the Omekla III shipyard. Riker tells her that they had been getting reports that there were Cardassian hardliners wanting to scrap the peace treaty. They were secretly building up an invasion fleet in the Orias system according to an intelligence report . Kira tries to reach Riker, he is still acting more like a Starfleet officer than a terrorist .

Sisko suddenly tells Dukat that the actions of the Maquis follow a plan. They made no random attacks but are designed to leave one sector alone without any warships – the Orias system. Dukat is about to have Gul Ranor send a ship when Korinas threatens him if he does. The system is under the Obsidian Order's protection and they will defend it by destroying any ship which will reach this system.

Act Five [ ]

Dukat has checked up and no one has been able to get any answers from the Obsidian Order regarding the Orias system, not even the Detapa Council . The Kraxon under the command of Gul Ranor has found a neutrino leak . The cloaked Defiant makes a run for the Orias System but they can track them. Dukat orders all ships to pursue but they cannot catch it.

Suddenly three Keldon -class ships appear out of the Orias system. Dukat is surprised to see this and asks Korinas who the ships belong to, because if they were part of the military, he would know about them. Dukat also mentions that the Obsidian Order is forbidden to possess any military equipment. Korinas seems to be unconcerned about this violation and simply smiles deviously.

Meanwhile, Thomas Riker refuses to back down now, even though it is starting to look hopeless. Kira guesses that this is less about the Maquis cause than it is about distinguishing himself from Commander Riker.

USS Defiant firing quantum torpedoes

The Defiant engaging the Keldon -class warships

Sisko makes a deal with Dukat: if he will let them surrender and turn over the ship and crew to the Federation , Sisko will turn over the Defiant 's sensor logs which by now contain full scans on the Orias system and whatever the Obsidian Order has been hiding. Dukat agrees only if they keep Riker to punish him for his actions. Sisko reluctantly agrees provided that Dukat arranges for the Ministry of Justice to take the death penalty off the table.

Keldon-class ships on the Defiant's viewscreen

The Obsidian Order's Keldon -class cruisers face off against the Defiant

The Defiant engages the Cardassian ships. They disable the first ship's port nacelle and takes the second ship's weapons off-line. Just at that moment, 3 more ships appear from the Orias system. The Defiant is out-numbered and out-gunned. Riker is about to continue any way when Sisko and Dukat contact him with their deal. He will be sentenced for life to the Lazon II labor camp . Kira pleads for him to think of his crew , only one more time like a Starfleet officer. Riker agrees and is told he must surrender to Gul Ranor on the Kraxon who will protect them from the ships of the Obsidian Order. After the Kraxon extends its shields and protects the Defiant , the Keldon -class starships of the Obsidian Order withdraw.

Riker kissing Kira

Riker "says goodbye" to Kira

True to his word, Riker transmits the sensor logs to the Kraxon and then beams over. Kira promises him that his crew will get a fair trial and they will come for him one day. Riker then moves to kiss her then taps his combadge and transports to the Kraxon leaving Kira in command of the Defiant .

Memorable quotes [ ]

" Listen to me! You can't have a runabout! You cannot get your medical supplies and I don't give a damn about the colonization schedule! Those colonists can make do with a box of bandages for all I care! " " Stop right there, Major! When was your last day off? " " I don't know! What does that have to do with anything? " " If you can't remember, then it's been too long. You're off duty as of this moment. "

" Commander! I'd heard you were aboard but I – I hadn't… " " There's nothing to say to you, O'Brien. I think you know why. "

" Nine years ago, a transporter accident created two William T. Rikers. One of them returned to his ship; the other was marooned on Nervala IV. " " The second Riker was finally discovered two years ago . He chose to use his middle name Thomas to distinguish himself from the other Riker. " " The two men are physically identical in all respects, right down to their DNA coding. There was no way for the security computer to know that it was Thomas, not William, who boarded the Defiant . "

" The last time I was here, I was only able to spend a couple of hours at Quark's – but by the time I left, I had all of his latinum and a date with one of his dabo girls, so I thought I might try my luck again." (laughs) " You be careful – Quark's dabo wheel has been a little stingy lately, and one of his dabo girls is dating my son…"

" I'd promised to take him to the amusement center in Lakarian City. He always wanted to go, but I never had the time. I told him, 'This year will be different, Mekor. This year I will make the time .'" " I had the same experience with Jake. At that age, they never understand, do they? You just hope that, one day later, they'll look back and say, 'Now I understand. Now I know why he did that .'" " When my son looks back on this day, the only thing he'll remember is that a Federation officer, on a Federation ship invaded his home, and kept his father away from him on his eleventh birthday, and he won't look back with understanding. He'll look back with hatred, and that's sad. "

" The Maquis have been hearing rumors about shifting loyalties in the Cardassian government. Certain hardline elements were unsatisfied with the Federation treaty and are doing whatever they can to scrap it. We had our hands on an intelligence report outlining a suspected military buildup in the Orias system. A secret buildup that even the Central Command isn't aware of. " " You're telling me you did all this to attack some secret base that may or may not exist? " " I'm convinced that it does. They are building an invasion fleet. If we let them finish it, these renegade Cardassians are going to use it. "

" No, you're trying to be a hero… and terrorists don't get to be heroes. "

" Be a Starfleet officer one last time and think of your crew. "

" You are an experienced Starfleet officer, Tom. Analyze the situation. Going to Orias is suicide. Now the smart move is to make a run for it while we still can. " " Maybe that's what an experienced Starfleet officer would do. Maybe that's what Captain Picard would do. Maybe that's what Commander Will Riker would do. But it's not what I'm going to do. I'm going to continue the mission. " " It's not the mission you're thinking about, is it? Or even the colonists in the zone. This is about you, isn't it? You and that other Will Riker out there. The man with your face, your name, your career. You are looking for a way to set yourself apart. Some way to be different. " " You shouldn't go fishing today; you won't catch anything. "

" Tough little ship. "

  • The costume worn by Tricia O'Neil as Korinas was later worn by Stunt actress Elle Alexander in the seventh season episode " The Dogs of War " and was sold off on the It's A Wrap! sale and auction on eBay. [3]

Continuity [ ]

  • This episode introduces a fleet of Keldon -class ships secretly constructed by the Obsidian Order in the Orias system . The later third season episode " Improbable Cause " reveals the reason for their construction: they were to be used in a joint operation by the Obsidian Order and the Romulan Tal Shiar to launch an assault on the Founders ' homeworld, precipitating the Battle of the Omarion Nebula .
  • Quantum torpedoes are used for the first time by a Federation starship in this episode. The Cardassian Union had quantum torpedo technology as early as stardate 47582 (mid- 2370 ) as Cardassian ATR-4107 was equipped with these weapons, seen in the Star Trek: Voyager episode " Dreadnought ".
  • Thomas Riker calls the Defiant a "tough little ship"; William T. Riker later calls it the same thing in Star Trek: First Contact .
  • Although this episode was screened three days after the release of Star Trek Generations , the stardates indicate that it takes place shortly before. This makes sense, as Riker and Sisko's conversation would seem to indicate the Enterprise -D is still active.
  • "Defiant" marks the only appearance of William T. Riker in Deep Space Nine as he is featured on the okudagram in the wardroom. The USS Enterprise -D and Beverly Crusher are also referenced.

Reception [ ]

  • Jonathan Frakes always felt that the character of Thomas Riker should have returned to DS9 and that there should have been an episode where Kira fulfilled her promise to rescue him. The producers however, seemed to be uninterested in finishing the story arc, as in the fourth season pitch letter to freelance writers, Tom Riker appeared on the list of subjects that they were not interested in hearing about. ( Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion  (p. ? ))
  • On the return of Tom Riker, Ira Steven Behr commented soon after the episode, " We'll probably see a return of Tom Riker episode. What's nice is he's not really a part of Next Generation , so he's ours, and we can do what we want with him and not worry about what the movies will do with Will Riker ". ( Captains' Logs Supplemental - The Unauthorized Guide to the New Trek Voyages , p. 87)

Apocrypha [ ]

  • According to the non- canon novel Quarantine , it was Chakotay 's idea for Tom Riker to steal the Defiant from Deep Space 9 by posing as Commander Riker.

Service history and disposition [ ]

The Lakota was launched by Starfleet in 2328. ( DS9 reference : Gamma Quadrant Sourcebook )

In the year 2372 , the Lakota docked at Deep Space 9 in order to transport Captain Benjamin Sisko and Constable Odo to Earth to confer with Starfleet Command over security concerns regarding the Dominion . While the Lakota was orbiting Earth she received a brief refit and placed under the command of Erika Benteen . A few days later, when Earth's power-grid failed and Earth feared a Dominion invasion, the Lakota 's transporters were used to place Starfleet troops on Earth. ( DS9 episode : " Homefront ")

When the grid failure was revealed to be part of a plot by Admiral James Leyton to declare martial law on Earth, Leyton ordered the Lakota to intercept the USS Defiant to stop it reaching Earth with vital evidence against Leyton. After a brief battle, the Lakota stood down and escorted the Defiant to Earth. Following the incident, Captain Benteen was removed from command and demoted. ( DS9 episode : " Paradise Lost ")

In 2373 , the Lakota travelled to a Maquis asteroid in the Terikof Belt to transport the remaining Maquis members to new planets. ( DS9 novel : The Badlands, Part IV )

In 2375 , the Lakota was one of the Excelsior -class starships defending Earth from the Breen during the Raid on San Francisco . ( STO - Yesterday's War mission : " Vorgon Conclusions ")

25th century [ ]

In the 25th century , the USS Lakota was still active by 2409 and commanded by Captain James Allen . In the same year, the ship met up with a Starfleet vessel in Romulan space to transfer over a captured Starfleet officer caught selling secrets to the Romulan Star Empire . Unbeknownst to the ship the prisoner was being transferred from, the defector was actually an agent of Section 31 to be inserted into the RSE as a deep cover operative, and the operation was meant to reinforce her cover story. ( STO mission : " Under the Cover of Night ")

Not long after, the vessel joined a battle group to combat an Undine fleet in the Draylon system. ( STO mission : " War Games ")

As of 2410 the Lakota was stationed outside Earth Spacedock . ( ST video game : Star Trek Online [Season 9])

First Splinter timeline [ ]

The Lakota was destroyed during the Dominion War in the First Splinter timeline . When Geordi La Forge , was looking to replace a cracked injector aboard the USS Enterprise -E , his friend Whis , chief engineer of the USS Nautilus , suggested contacting Ranzz from the USS Bartlet , as the secondary hull and at least one nacelle from the Lakota were reported to have still been intact and the Bartlet had recently collected a lot of debris in the area where the Lakota had been destroyed. Ranzz promised to ask his captain to return to the wreck to pick up the remaining injectors and send one to La Forge. ( TNG - A Time to... novel : A Time to Hate )

Nidani Ledrah had served on the Lakota prior to the USS Titan . ( TTN novel : The Red King )

Other alternate realities [ ]

In an alternate timeline created by Wesley Crusher in which the Maquis never existed, Chakotay did not resign his Starfleet commission and was serving as the first officer of the Lakota in 2373 . ( TNG short story : " Gods, Fate, and Fractals ")

  • Vice Admiral James Leyton , commanding officer (prior to 2372 )
  • Captain Erika Benteen , commanding officer ( 2372 )

8 new details star trek: discovery revealed about ds9’s breen.

Star Trek: Discovery reveals such a dizzying amount of information about DS9's Breen that it's hard to keep track. Here's what "Mirrors" revealed.

WARNING: Contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery, season 5, episode 5, "Mirrors".

  • The Breen from Star Trek: DS9 make a proper return in Discovery, revealing their secrets and motivations.
  • L'ak is a unique Breen who fell in love with Moll, breaking the standard mold of his species.
  • Discovery reveals the Breen have two faces, one translucent and one solid, hinting at a deeper evolution storyline.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5, "Mirrors" reveals a raft of new details about the Breen from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . The Breen are the latest DS9 aliens to appear in Discovery , making their proper return in the flashback sequences that fill viewers in on the backstory of Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis). Written by Johanna Lee & Carlos Cisco, and directed by Jen McGowan , "Mirrors" finds Moll and L'ak stranded in interdimensional space with Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala).

With the four treasure hunters forced to work together, there's a chance to reveal more about Moll and L'ak's motivations in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5 . The bombshell reveal that L'ak is actually Breen is the first of many revelations about the enigmatic Star Trek: Deep Space Nine aliens in the episode. The flashbacks to Moll and L'ak's burgeoning romance shed light on a number of aspects of Breen culture in the 32nd century , including just what sits underneath those helmets.

Star Trek: Discovery Vs. DS9's Breen Is Now Inevitable

8 l'ak is a breen, but he doesn't fit the mold of a traditional breen..

As Burnham and Book try to reason with Moll and L'ak, the couple reveal that they're trying to outrun an Erigah, a Breen blood bounty. This confirms to Burnham that L'ak is a Breen, albeit without the helmet and refrigeration suit . The flashbacks to how Moll and L'ak met reveal that L'ak was a member of the Breen royal family, but he didn't fit the mold . Demoted from his royal duties, L'ak was assigned to shuttle bay duty, where he met and fell in love with Moll.

In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , Lt. Commander Worf (Michael Dorn) once stated that nobody had seen a Breen without their helmet and lived to tell the tale. The revelations about L'ak's origins mean that half the cast of Star Trek: Discovery season 5 have managed to do just that. However, as the flashbacks show, the Breen are still incredibly secretive about showing their faces, which makes L'ak a unique member of his species .

7 Moll Used To Sell Dilithium To The Breen Imperium

It's how she made her living during the burn.

During the time of scarcity following The Burn, Moll supplied the Breen with dilithium for use in their starships. However, Moll was cutting her dilithium supply with " impurities " , meaning that the Breen's supply was considerably watered down. Confronted about this by L'ak, Moll offered to go into business with the mold-breaking Breen to make things go smoothly. L'ak agreed, partly due to his desire to get payback for his demotion, and partly due to his immediate attraction to Moll.

Moll and L'ak became a courier couple like Burnham and Booker, giving Book hope that he could get through to his new "sister".

Moll and L'ak were eventually found out for their scam, for which the punishment was execution. However, as L'ak couldn't bring himself to kill the woman he loved, he turned on his own people, instead. In response, the Breen placed an " Erigah " on L'ak, a blood bounty that could never be cleared . While Burnham and Booker offered Federation protection from the Breen, Moll and L'ak were unconvinced that they could truly help erase the Erigah.

Star Trek: Discovery Stars Eve Harlow & Elias Toufexis Break Down Their Villainous Romance

6 the breen placed a blood bounty on moll and l'ak, "can they erase an erigah".

Although the Erigah was placed on L'ak, Moll refused to leave his side, meaning that the Breen blood bounty was placed on them both. This explains Booker's assessment that the couple were having fun and engaging in " cliffs-edge kind of stuff ". Moll and L'ak's devil may care attitude so far in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is likely driven by the fact that they're on the run for their very lives . Moll and L'ak are so committed to each other that the Breen tells Burnham that he'd " rather die " than be separated from Moll in a Federation prison.

An Erigah is an aspect of Breen culture that wasn't previously mentioned in the species' multiple appearances in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . It's therefore unclear how one collects a blood bounty, but Moll, L'ak, Burnham, and Book all seem troubled by the mention of the name. Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 7 is titled "Erigah", so it will presumably shed further light on the blood bounty placed on Moll and L'ak's heads, and who will attempt to collect it.

5 The Breen Atmosphere Is "Quite Comfortable"

Just as ds9's weyoun said it was..

It's long been speculated that the Breen lived in sub-zero temperatures, with Star Trek: Deep Space Nine characters like Gul Dukat (Marc Alaimo) and Quark (Armin Shimerman) referring to their planet as a frozen wasteland. While Moll doesn't visit the Breen homeworld in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5, she is in their territory and doesn't need to wear any protective clothing to cope with the temperatures. This, therefore, confirms something that Weyoun (Jeffrey Combs) said in DS9 season 7, episode 20, "The Changing Face of Evil".

The Breen were also said to wear refrigeration suits to cope with the higher temperatures of other planets, something which is also seemingly contradicted by Star Trek: Discovery .

The Breen were powerful allies of the Dominion in the latter stages of their war with the Federation Alliance in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . After the Breen and the Dominion had signed their alliance, Weyoun reflected that the temperature on Breen was "quite comfortable". It was always possible that this was wry sarcasm on Weyoun's part. However, the atmosphere inside Star Trek: Discovery 's huge Imperium spaceport appears to confirm Weyoun's assessment of the temperature on Breen .

Star Trek: The Dominion War Timeline, Explained

4 the breen primarch is l'ak's uncle, part of the yod-thot royal caste..

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 1, "Red Directive" revealed that the Breen Confederacy had become the Breen Imperium in the 800 years since the end of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . Not much was known about the inner workings of the Breen Confederacy in DS9 , other than negotiations with the Dominion were led by Thot Gor (Todd Slayton). In the 32nd century, the Breen Imperium is run by the Yod-Thot royal caste, suggesting an ancestral link with DS9 's Breen .

One of the key members of the Breen Imperium is Primarch Ruhn (Tony Nappa), the uncle of L'ak in Star Trek: Discovery season 5. The Primarch is disgusted by L'ak's relationship with Moll and his insistence on denying his heritage . L'ak stopped short of murdering his uncle while escaping with Moll, meaning that Primarch Ruhn may return later in Discovery season 5. Especially if Moll and L'ak open negotiations with the Breen Imperium to provide them with the Progenitors' powerful technology .

3 The Breen Imperium Destroy The Federation In An Alternate Future

They're the "wrong hands" that the progenitors' technology must not fall into..

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4, "Face the Strange" revealed that the Breen took possession of the Progenitors' technology in a timeline where the USS Discovery never defeated the time bug . The Krenim chronophage, left over from the Temporal Wars, was supposed to keep Discovery out of the treasure hunt until Moll and L'ak could secure the Progenitors' technology. The Breen Imperium then used the powers of the Progenitors to destroy the entire Federation in one of the most striking scenes from Discovery season 5, episode 4 .

The Breen previously launched an attack on Federation Headquarters in Star Trek: Discovery season 7, episode 20, "The Changing Face of Evil".

At the opening of Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5, "Mirrors", Burnham and Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) reflected on the stakes of their mission. "Mirrors" also revealed that Moll and L'ak are still determined to use the Progenitors' technology to bargain for their lives with the Breen Imperium. As Moll and L'ak escape the ISS Enterprise at the end of "Mirrors", they are more desperate than ever, making Discovery 's bleak future look like a serious possibility.

Star Trek: Discovery Reveals A Voyager Enemy Played A Big Role In The Temporal Wars

2 the breen do bleed, or leak, at the very least..

In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 5, episode 14, "In Purgatory's Shadow", Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig) confidently states that the Breen have no liquid circulatory system . Conducting blood screenings to root out Changeling infiltrators in the Dominion prison camp, Bashir says everyone bar the Breen prisoner has been tested because they have " No blood ". Star Trek: Discovery appears to reveal that this isn't the case, as L'ak appears to bleed after falling on his own knife during the fight with Burnham .

Given the revelations about the Breens' physiology in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5, there are some possible explanations for the contradiction. Firstly, the Breen are an incredibly secretive race, who were largely unknown to the Federation in the 24th century. The Breen prisoner in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine could, therefore, have just been lying to Bashir about not having any blood . The other explanation is that L'ak isn't bleeding, rather he's leaking the gelatinous organic material that constitutes a Breen body.

1 The Breen Have Two Faces

One solid face, one translucent face, both green..

The biggest reveal about the Breen in Star Trek: Discovery is what they keep underneath their helmets. It's stated that a Breen has two faces; one which is translucent and gelatinous, and another which is solid and firmly humanoid. This revelation is delivered as if the viewer was already aware of such a fact, which means that Discovery doesn't dive deeper into the reasons for the Breen having two faces . Primarch Ruhn tells L'ak that the Breen have evolved past their solid forms, and that their translucent form is a sign of strength.

Star Trek: Discovery doesn't reveal what role the Breen's armor plays in maintaining their form, translucent or otherwise. Still, the idea that the Breen's softer, more vulnerable face is stronger than the hard shell is a decent sci-fi concept that will hopefully get further exploration later in Discovery season 5. However, both faces are very clearly humanoid, which heavily implies that they may also originate from the Progenitors. Whether this information will lead to peace between the Breen and the Federation remains to be seen as Star Trek: Discovery season 5 continues.
