Our Favorite Statue of Liberty Cruises
First of all, let us reiterate that the only way to set foot on Liberty Island is by taking the ferry. This can be done with an appropriate ticket or within a guided tour. Any other Statue of Liberty Cruise will be cruising around the Statue of Liberty . They may make a stop on the water, but they do not stop at the island . For us, however, cruises around the Statue of Liberty are the perfect way of combining panoramic scenes of Manhattan’s skyline with a close view of the Statue of Liberty. If you do want to visit the island, be sure to be informed about all the different ticket types in advance.
There are also a bunch of private tours that are offered to explore the Statue of Liberty. Even though the reviews are excellent, we do not believe a private tour is necessary. A guided tour in a small group is just as good and much more affordable.
Should you want to climb all the way to the top, into the crown of the Statue of Liberty , you would need a different ticket. Those tickets are limited and sell out many weeks in advance, so be sure to secure your tickets.
Details about each Statue of Liberty Cruise

From there, you will make a leisurely drive to the southern tip of Manhattan and you will be in the Port of New York where you can see the Statue of Liberty for the first time. On the way there you can also clearly see the new highest building in the evening skyline: the One World Trade Center.
Circle Line - Harbor Lights Night Cruise
The Harbor Lights Cruise by Cricle Line is an amazing way to see the NYC from the water. As the lights start to sparkle across the Hudson and East Rivers at dusk you see the beauty of the city at night from a whole different angle.
Classic Harbor Line: Architecture Yacht Cruise
The architecture boat tour takes you around Manhattan in 2.5 hours. On a 30 meter long wooden ship in the style of the 1920s you can relax and learn a lot of interesting facts about the many small and large buildings of the city. The tour is super-relaxing and the price includes a drink (vino, soft drinks) and small snacks.
Circle Line - Best of NYC Cruise
The Best of NYC Cruise takes you once around the whole island of Manhattan. This is a great way to explore the city from the water and see more than 25 of the top sights NYC has to offer. Because this is one of the most popular cruises make sure to book your tickets beforehand online to secure your spot.

The Liberty Cruise by Circle Line is a great way to see the NYC skyline from the water, as well as get up close to the Statue of Liberty for some amazing pictures.
Classic Harbor Line: Sail to the Statue of Liberty

Bateaux Lunch Cruise
This boat tour with lunch on board the Bateaux New York will take you from the Hudson River to the East River, which means you will see all the major buildings of the NYC skyline. New York Harbor Evening Sail with Live Jazz
You will sail with the beautiful tall ship “Clipper City” from Battery Park southwards into the harbor of New York and can admire the illuminated One World Trade Center and the skyline from close range. The atmosphere on the tall ship is really very special: you are surrounded by locals, the hustle and bustle of the city is far away and you are immediately deeply relaxed.
Classic Harbor Line: Sailboat Day Cruise to the Statue of Liberty
By far the best way to admire New York City’s iconic skyline is from the water. With this day cruise along the Hudson River, you can take in the most recognized cityscape in the world while relaxing on board the elegant Adirondack schooner. Sip complimentary wine, beer, and Champagne while looking out over iconic sights like the Brooklyn Bridge, Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, and Battery Park.

The Best Statue of Liberty Cruises

Enjoy the sea air while you take in stunning New York City views.
The best view of New York might not be in the city itself, but from the harbor looking back at the skyline. Sightseeing cruises are a wonderful reminder that Manhattan is, in fact, an island, and getting out on the water offers a breezy cruise in addition to a fresh vantage point.
With a cold drink in hand, you'll see not just the Statue of Liberty , but also other top city landmarks from the Brooklyn Bridge to One World Trade Center. These boat tours allow visitors to zoom out and get a new perspective, then return to Manhattan refreshed by the wind, water, light and sheer size of the skyline.
There are different boat experiences to match every type of traveler, and here are some of the best.
Best Overall: Statue City Cruises
Price: From $24.50
Duration: At your own pace, with ferries departing every 25 to 30 minutes
Standout perk: Admission to the grounds of Liberty Island and Ellis Island are included in this sightseeing cruise and ferry service to Lady Liberty.
The best overall value and experience belongs to Statue City Cruises, which combines the scenery of a sightseeing cruise with the in-depth experience of an attraction tour. Priority entry included with the ticket saves time at the departure point at The Battery . On board the round-trip ferry service, visitors will experience all the sweeping views of a New York Harbor cruise, including skyscrapers of the Financial District and beyond.
The first stop is Liberty Island, home to the Statue of Liberty. Audio tours in a dozen languages are available so you can go at your own pace. Those interested can continue via boat service to Ellis Island, home to the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration, which contains several fascinating exhibits and the chance to look up your ancestors. Explore at your leisure, then utilize the ferry service back to lower Manhattan.
Local tip: Choose a time as early as possible in the morning for this experience. Ferry service and crowds at Lady Liberty grow throughout the day and swell on weekends; a weekday morning is the best choice.
Best for Adults: Manhattan by Sail's Day Sail – Shearwater
Price: From $60 for adults
Duration: 90 minutes
Standout perk: This cruise provides a true sailing experience on a classic schooner.
Don't be surprised to bump into New Yorkers on the Shearwater, a schooner with tall sails that entices even jaded Manhattanites to go for a ride. Climb aboard this "Gatsby"-era boat, with capacity for 48 people, from the dock at North Cove Marina at Brookfield Place and set out on a sail down the Hudson River and into the New York Harbor. Trade city crowds for the open water with this cruise, complete with a cash bar, that offers up-close views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the Manhattan skyline.
This experience, conveniently available at different times throughout the day, is a match for adults seeking a more sophisticated sail – think: hip vibe, ample bar, music and an emphasis on service. Several upgrades are available, including sails that offer a wine tasting or live jazz on board. Every sailing offers the chance to snap your photograph with Lady Liberty herself, though you won't be disembarking at Liberty Island.
Local tip: Adults seeking a romantic cruise may want to opt for the Sunset Sail on the Shearwater Classic Schooner.
Best for Families: Circle Line's Liberty Super Express Downtown
Courtesy of Circle Line
Price: From $29
Duration: 50 minutes
Standout perk: Maximize time with this express cruise, featuring convenient, regular departures.
Families with limited time (or kids with limited attention spans) may appreciate a quick express cruise option. This fast and friendly tour, at just 50 minutes, is a speedy way to get the experience of a boat cruise without it taking a bite out of your day. Hop aboard a boat with Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises – the sister company to New York Water Taxi – and choose between either the open air of the top deck or the temperature-controlled cabin. On a sunny day, the outdoor deck with its sea breeze is the place to be as the boat sails past the Statue of Liberty.
Get unobstructed views of Lady Liberty and snap some family photographs before returning to Pier 16 in the South Street Seaport. Quick, efficient and featuring live narration from a guide, this sightseeing ride is excellent value packed into a short time span.
Local tip: Kids interested in ships may want to visit the South Street Seaport Museum, near the cruise departure point, to see model ships and more.

Best Budget: Staten Island Ferry
Courtesy of SIFerry.com
Price: Free
Duration: 25 minutes each way
Standout perk: Get out on the water to see the Statue of Liberty without paying a cent.
The best budget sightseeing cruise isn't a cruise at all, but rather a free mode of local transportation: the Staten Island Ferry. While many of even the most basic harbor cruises start at about $20, this ferry offers a completely free, ticketless cruise in the New York Harbor, bypassing the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island along the way. With service every 30 minutes and no reservations or tickets required, the ferry is not only a steal price-wise, but also a convenient option for travelers who don't want to be tied down to a ticketed departure time.
Stand out on deck and admire views of Lady Liberty during this journey that crosses about 5 miles from Whitehall Street at the tip of lower Manhattan to St. George on Staten Island. The only drawback is that you must depart the ferry in Staten Island and reboard for the trip back to Manhattan – a small "price" to pay for a free boat ride in NYC.
Local tip: Visitors will want to avoid rush hour; these commuter boats can be crowded. Choose a time outside commuting rush hour to maximize the peaceful experience.
Best Luxury: Classic Harbor Line's Statue and Skyline Sightseeing Cruise
Courtesy of Classic Harbor Line
Price: From $64 for adults
Duration: 1.5 hours
Standout perk: This intimate cruise on a 1920s-inspired yacht comes with one complimentary drink included.
Board a yacht at Pier 62 in Chelsea for a polished cruise including views of the New York Harbor's top landmark: the Statue of Liberty. Set sail in style aboard a yacht inspired by the roaring '20s, complete with a solarium and open-air decks as well as a climate-controlled cabin. Cruise down the west side of Manhattan and check out views of The Battery, the Financial District, Governor's Island and more.
Of all the available New York City harbor cruises, guests often praise this one for the quality of the staff running the Classic Harbor Line cruises. With an emphasis on service, an intimate group with a maximum of 80 passengers and an onboard stocked bar, this cruise offers a sophisticated option for seeing Lady Liberty.
Local tip: This cruise departs from Pier 62, which is home to a riverfront carousel for kids and a pretty stretch of Hudson River Park. Stop into Chelsea Market for some picnic supplies and relax in the park before your cruise.
Best Sunset Cruise: Circle Line's Harbor Lights
Price: From $45
Duration: 2 hours
Standout perk: Watch the skyscrapers of the Manhattan skyline flicker to life.
Circle Line offers a variety of cruises with different itineraries. One of the most popular is the Harbor Lights tour, a cruise departing from Midtown Manhattan that includes golden sunset views and a photo stop at the Statue of Liberty. See NYC landmarks like Hudson Yards, Chelsea Piers and One World Trade Center before cruising out into the New York Harbor. You'll get to learn about New York from onboard narration as the itinerary continues past Liberty Island and beneath the Brooklyn Bridge.
While the sun sets and the Manhattan skyscrapers flash to life, relax on the outdoor deck space and visit the onboard bar to purchase beer, wine, cocktails and light snacks. A temperature-controlled cabin is available for hot days. Wi-Fi is free on board and allows for easy posting of sunset photos.
Local tip: This cruise departs from Pier 83 in Midtown Manhattan. Arrive early to visit the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum at neighboring Pier 86.

8 Best Statue of Liberty Cruises
Free Tours By Foot offers several tours which include views of the Statue of Liberty, and our tour guides are frequently asked about how to get closer to Lady Liberty.
A lot of travelers want to visit Liberty Island and see the statue up close, and there is only one ferry service - Statue City Cruises - which allows you to travel to Liberty and Ellis Island from Battery Park in Lower Manhattan.
However, our guides indicate that if you're looking to get close enough to snap a memorable photo, cruises that go around the island might actually be much better.
In this post, we'll provide helpful information from our guides about the best cruises around the Statue of Liberty.
We'll also provide tips from locals and travelers who use our Facebook Group, as they usually have a lot of useful suggestions for other travelers and tourists.

CRUISES TO LIBERTY AND ELLIS ISLANDS
The Statue of Liberty is one of the most noteworthy symbols in the United States of America, and you can actually visit the island where it is located.
While you won’t pay for admission to the island, you will have to pay for the ferry travel.
If you want to enter the landmark itself, you can also purchase either a pedestal or crown access ticket.
There are both reserve and flex tickets available.
Reserve tickets are timed, so they must be used on a specific day and time while flex tickets allow you to visit whenever you want.
The main difference between these types of admission is that flex tickets do not include visitors' access to either the pedestal or the crown.
If you want to enter the statue, you will need a reserved ticket.
Each ticket includes access to Liberty Island, Ellis Island, and the Statue of Liberty Museum. However, you must purchase a pedestal or crown ticket for access to these areas.
The Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration houses many historic artifacts from immigrants who came to this country through this port of entry.
Ticket prices range from $24.50 - $24.80 depending on what you want to see and do while you’re there.
For more details, make sure to check our post covering how to get to the Statue of Liberty .
And now, here are the other types of cruises that take you around the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
- Circle Line Cruises
This vendor offers three different cruise options that travel very close to the Statue of Liberty.
While one of their outings is focused on the landmark, they also have a couple of boat tours that simply get close to the statue or travel around New York Harbor and the Hudson River.
Some of these outings are included with tourist attraction concession passes, and you can learn more about those opportunities to save money in our offer section .
Liberty Cruise
- Focused on the Statue of Liberty.

- Includes a pass by One World Trade Center.
- $29/Adults | $24/Children

The Beast - Speedboat

If you’re looking for a more exciting trip out on the water, this is an excellent alternative to a traditional Statue of Liberty cruise.
- $32/Adults | $25/Children
- Availability: May - September
- Duration: 30 minutes
- Featured on tourist passes.
This company also offers a Statue by Night tour which we will cover in our Night/Dinner Cruises section .
- Manhattan by Sail
If you’d rather see the Statue of Liberty from a sailboat/tall ship, this company offers a service that will take you very close to the landmark.
In addition to seeing Lady Liberty, you’ll also see sites such as the Brooklyn Bridge, Ellis Island, and several other notable sites in New York City.
This is a more traditional way to see some of the most historic locations in NYC, and many reviewers indicate the views on a tall ship are unobstructed and unbeatable!
- Ticket Prices: $78/Adults | $35/Children
- Hours: 11:30 am, 1 pm, 3 pm
- Included with the New York Sightseeing Pass .
Many of the tours provided by this company are included with various New York tourist passes, and you can find more details about those deals in our deals and offer section.
As with their competitors, there is also a sunset sail option that you can enjoy as the sun is going down.
We will cover this option in our Night/Dinner cruises section .
Spirit Cruises
While other companies focus on providing tour and sightseeing opportunities, this company offers dining cruises that include a meal and typically last for 2-3 hours.
Many of their cruises pass by the Statue of Liberty, but you can also expect to see One World Trade Center, Brooklyn Bridge, Ellis Island, and many other notable landmarks.
- Ticket Prices: $64 and up
- Duration: 2 hours
- Availability: 3-4 days a week
- Departure: 12 pm
- Purchase tickets or learn more .
You can save 10% on this activity ( $8-$10 ) by using the New York Sightseeing Pass . We will cover this deal in the deals and offer section.
Spirit Cruises also offers a dinner cruise that passes by the Statue of Liberty at night. Check our night/dinner cruises section for more details .
City Sightseeing
This popular tour company offers a hop-on-hop-off boat tour that will take you past many notable sites including the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, One World Trade Center, and more.
A hop-on-hop-off boat tour allows you to jump on at any designated stop and jump off whenever you want, so if you’re only interested in seeing Lady Liberty, you can just take that portion of the trip.
- Ticket Prices: $37/Adults | $31/Children
Considering that City Sightseeing is primarily a hop-on-hop-off bus tour company, it shouldn’t be too surprising that they offer a lot of combo packages that include both services for a lower price.
This hop-on-hop-off cruise is also included on some tourist passes, and we’ll cover those deals in our deals and offer section.
NOTE: This hop-on hop-off cruise is not currently available as of March 2024.
NIGHT AND DINNER STATUE OF LIBERTY CRUISES
The following section will cover some of the best cruises you can take after dark or at sunset in New York City.
Each of these services travels close to Lady Liberty.
Almost all of the tours we listed in our Statue of Liberty cruises section also offer outings either at night or as the sun is setting.
If you’re interested in seeing the landmark as it lights up or enjoying its silhouette at sunset, these trips are an excellent opportunity you may want to consider.
- Ticket Prices: $116 and up
- Includes a buffet dinner.
- Save 10% with the New York Sightseeing Pass .
- Duration: 3 hours
- Departures: 6 pm & 7 pm
Circle Line
- Ticket Prices: $29/Adults | $24/Children
- Focuses on the Statue of Liberty & Brooklyn Bridge.
- Departure: 7 pm
- Ticket Prices: $98/Adults | $45/Children
- Sunset sail which covers Lady Liberty/Ellis Island.
Sadly, the last departure for City Sightseeing’s hop-on-hop-off cruise is at 4:30 p.m., which means you won’t be able to enjoy the Statue of Liberty either at sunset or after dark by using this service.
If you’re looking for a great alternative to a Statue of Liberty Cruise at night or sunset, make sure to read our section on the Staten Island Ferry .
DEALS AND OFFERS
This section will cover some of the best ways to save money on Statue of Liberty cruises.
We will include details about tourist passes, combo packages, and more.
Tourist Attraction Concession Passes
If a Statue of Liberty cruise is only one of many activities you have planned, it might make sense to grab a tourist pass while you’re in New York City.
An all-inclusive pass will provide admission to dozens of popular activities over the course of a specific amount of time (1, 2, 3, 5, 7, or 10 days).
Alternatively, you can also choose a flex pass which allows you to pay one flat price for a set number of activities.
There are also preset passes that provide access to a specific number of activities for one low price, such as the New York CityPASS . This service includes a Circle Line cruise at no extra cost.
Here are the Statue of Liberty cruises you can save money on using a New York tourist pass:
- Statue of Liberty Ferry + Ellis Island
In addition to receiving free admission to these activities, you can also save 10% off dinner cruises from Spirit Cruises with the New York Sightseeing Pass .
These services also offer skip-the-line privileges at certain popular locations in New York City, making it easier to save both time and money.

These sites also frequently offer promo codes for between 10% - 20% off in addition to whatever deals they are offering on local activities.
If you’re planning to purchase a cruise with one of these services, make sure to check the top and bottom of each page for banners that may contain additional promos.
STATEN ISLAND FERRY
If you really want to save some money on a Statue of Liberty cruise, the Staten Island Ferry is the best deal in New York City.
This ferry is actually entirely free to use, and it passes by the Statue of Liberty several times every day.
Admittedly, this won’t get you very close to the Statue of Liberty, but you can still see Lady Liberty from the ferry.
This boat travels back and forth from Manhattan to Staten Island several times both day and night, so you can enjoy the Statue of Liberty after dark as well.
For more information about this service, please read our post on the Staten Island Ferry .
Tips From Locals and Travelers
If you're still wondering which cruise to take, we have gathered a lot of helpful advice members of our New York City Travel Tips group on Facebook.
Before we get started with their suggestions, it must be noted that an overwhelming majority of locals recommend sticking with the Staten Island Ferry.
While this is an excellent way to see the statue, many travelers feel that the cruises are even better.
One of our users managed to take video from both the Harbor Lights cruise after dark and the Staten Island Ferry during the day.
As you can see, the view from the Harbor Lights cruise does indeed appear to be much closer than the ferry.
If you want to get as close as possible without actually going to the island, it's definitely worth considering.
As you can see, multiple commenters noted that the Harbor Lights cruise offers excellent views and is absolutely worth the additional cost.
Even so, since one of these options is free, you might want to consider doing both if you have enough time.
One thing that travelers always seem to get confused about is the difference between the Staten Island Ferry and the ferry that takes you directly to Liberty Island.
Please keep in mind that the ferry to the island is not free. The Staten Island Ferry only passes by the statue, but it does still offer some of the best views of Lady Liberty.
As you can see, locals really do prefer the ferry to Staten Island, because it runs frequently, quickly, and it's widely considered one of the best ways to see this famous landmark.
That said, there are some who also recommend using the NYC water taxis, as they also pass by relatively close to the Statue of Liberty.
As Chris notes, one of the big reasons to consider this option is because you'll also get to see other major landmarks around Manhattan and Brooklyn.

The 6 Best Statue of Liberty Cruises + Tips From a Local
T he best view of New York might not be in the city itself, but from the harbor looking back at the skyline.
Button Enhancement : Button - Statue City Cruises
Button Enhancement : Button - Manhattan by Sail's Day Sail – Shearwater
Button Enhancement : Button - Circle Line's Liberty Super Express Downtown

Button Enhancement : Button - Classic Harbor Line's Statue and Skyline Sightseeing Cruise
Button Enhancement : Button - Circle Line's Harbor Lights
