Some folks like to sleep in a warm room, some like it cold. There’s been a rumor about cruise ship temperature and that the rooms get cool at night, and they can. For bedding, most cruise lines have at minimum, a flat sheet and a duvet – and possibly another blanket in between.

Well, this is a subjective answer depending on your natural body temperature, but ships, for the most part, are pretty regulated in temperature, which would be similar to that of an office building.

Sleeping temperature has never been an issue for us, even though I (male) like to sleep in a warmer room versus my wife who prefers a colder room.

In order to account for temperature fluctuations, packing clothing which can be layered is smart.

Some may prefer to have a light sweater during the evening entertainment, even when sailing in a warm destination, or, for cooler destinations, packing a heavier coat may be advisable if you want to spend time out on your balcony, watching the stars.

The temperature in cabins can sometimes run warmer than public areas, so it might be wise to take a small battery-operated fan if you typically run hot when sleeping.

When it comes to the cruise ship, your cabin is your home away from home. It’s where you’ll sleep (of course), but it’s also where you’ll relax, get ready for the day, and it serves as your own little private spot away from the rest of the ship.

But there are a lot of little things that you may not know about a cruise cabin, or things that you should understand in order to make your vacation even better.

What Types of Cabins Are There? What Are the Differences?

On a modern cruise ship there is no shortage of different cabin types — especially when you get into high-end suites that can offer all sorts of different features, sizes, and amenities. However, for the most part cabins fall into five categories:

Inside : The lowest-priced cabins on the ship are the inside or interior cabins. These rooms are just what they sound like; they are on the inside of the ship meaning they don’t have any windows. While they have everything you need, inside cabins offer a budget-friendly way to get on the cruise ship (and get really dark with the lights out!).

Oceanview : Want to save money but also have a little light and be able to see the scenery? Oceanview cabins offer a room with a window. It can’t be opened, but will give you the chance to take in a view and not feel so enclosed while also not breaking the bank.

Balcony : Just as the name implies, with these rooms you get your own little balcony that allows you a spot to sit out, get some fresh air, and have your own private view. For many people a balcony is a must-have, but just know that they are more expensive than lower-tier cabins.

Suites : Suites won’t have the largest number of rooms on the ship, but they can have the largest variety. On the largest ships they can span everything from a cabin with a little extra space all the way to massive two-level penthouses on the highest levels of the ship. Expect to spend considerably more for the luxury.

Specialty Cabins : Some cruise lines are offering more and more specialty cabins (such as Carnival’s ‘Havana’ rooms) that fall into one of the categories above, but also have special features or perks. This can range everything from different styles than the rest of the ship to access to special lounges, restaurants, and pools.

How Big Is a Cruise Cabin?

If you’re thinking of a big hotel room on the ship, then temper your expectations (unless ponying up for one of the mega-suites on some ships). Rooms will vary in size, but usually they fall in the 160-200 square foot range. A 12’x12′ foot bedroom in your home is under 150 square feet, so it’s slightly larger than a normal bedroom.

But in that space you’ll have your bed, a sitting area, closet/storage, and the bathroom. Space is used efficiently, and it’s plenty of space for two adults for a week. Still, it can feel a bit small if you don’t keep the room organized or are in the room for an extended period of time.

How Large Are the Balconies on a Cruise Ship?

Like cabins, balconies can vary in size. However, most cruise balconies are around 40-60 square feet (roughly 4-6′ x 10′). It’s large enough for a couple of chairs and a table, but don’t think that you’ll have a massive spot to hangout, sunbathe, or do much more than just sit and enjoy the view.

Even so, having this extra space in addition to the enclosed cabin is a nice perk that can make your cabin feel much larger.

How Many People Can Sleep in a Cabin?

Despite the small size, cruise cabins can often sleep three to four people. There are traditionally two twin beds that can be separated or joined together to make one queen bed that sleeps two people.

In addition, sometimes there is a couch that can have the pillows removed to make a flat space to sleep another person. Some cabins have drop-down or fold-down beds to sleep multiple people as well.

Note that just because a cabin can sleep four people doesn’t mean it will do so comfortably. In our opinion most traditional cabins have enough space for two adults and one/two kids. If your kids are older or you have more adults, then going with a larger cabin like a suite or booking two rooms might be a better idea.

Do I Have to Sleep in the Same Bed as Someone Else?

If you are traveling with friends and walk into a cabin with one large bed, don’t worry. Cruise cabin beds can be separated or joined together. So a couple can have them together while friends traveling can take them apart.

Your cabin attendant can form the beds how you like. Just let them know if it’s not in your preferred configuration.

What’s the Bathroom Like?

For most people, let’s just say their bathroom in the cruise cabin will be… cozy. Bathrooms are small, with a sink and vanity, a toilet, and a shower.

The commode in the cabin is built into the wall (and actually seems to sit an inch or two higher than normal). Instead of a lever you push to flush, there is a button above the toilet for when you’re done.

Unless opting for a higher-end suite, there won’t be a tub. Instead you’ll have a shower (often circular, but not always) with a shower-head wand. Just know that the showers are small. Often you can simply extend your elbows out to your sides and be touching opposite walls of the space.

Within the shower you’ll have a dispenser for soap and shampoo. In addition, there is usually a retractable line that extends across the shower where you can hang clothing to dry.

Are There Accessible Cruise Cabins for Handicap/Disabled Passengers?

As you can likely tell, the traditional cruise cabin isn’t that accessible. There isn’t much room for wheelchairs, there are things like a high threshold to the bathroom, and no grab bars around toilets or in showers.

If you need more accessibility, don’t worry. On cruise ships there are a number of accessible cabins that you can book. These rooms are tailor-made for those needing accommodations that fit their needs.

Instead of high thresholds between the bathroom and cabin balcony, there are gentle inclines. Rooms feature more space to maneuver a wheelchair (including a larger balcony), and things like grab bars and shower seats to help passengers with these needs sail comfortably.

Can I Adjust the Temperature in the Room?

Most likely you can adjust your room temperature. Every room your sail will have some sort of thermostat. But to be honest, we’re not convinced that all of them actually adjust the temperature.

We’ve sailed in cabins where you adjust the thermostat and can instantly hear the air kick on. Other rooms we’ve sailed we have noticed absolutely no correlation between what we place the thermostat on and what the temperature in the room does.

In general, cruise cabins are cool, so you don’t have to worry about getting too hot. In our view, we’ve had issues with the room being too cold for our taste and not being able to warm things up a bit.

Is There a Refrigerator in the Cruise Cabin?

Yes, any cruise cabin will have a fridge in it. Just know that it’s more of a cooler than a refrigerator. Don’t expect it to get too cold, and it certainly won’t freeze anything.

Sometimes the fridge in the room doubles as a stocked mini-bar. These items aren’t free and you’ll have a price list posted nearby. If you want to use that space to keep items cool, you can let your cabin steward know and they can remove the items to give you space.

Is There a Safe in the Room?

Yes, any cruise cabin you book will have an in-room safe. This is normally in the closet area.

The safe is small, with a footprint about the size of a small laptop computer. Still, it’s enough space for things like passports, phones, cash, and cards. The safe is operated with a four-digit code that you create on your own. So you enter any four digits, press “close” or “lock” and your valuables are stored. Enter the code again to open the safe up.

What Amenities Are in a Cruise Cabin?

Your cabin may be small, but it comes with everything that you would need for several days at sea.

We’ve mentioned the refrigerator and cabin safe. As well, there is a television, an in-room hair dryer, vanity area with desk, outlet(s), and closets with hangers. In the bathroom you’ll have soap/shampoo provided, along with a line for drying clothes, and towels.

How Is TV in the Room?

Each cabin will come with a television. On newer ships the TV menus are usually interactive, providing you with a way to explore things going on around the ship, check your onboard account, and even watch pay-per-view movies.

However, when it comes to channel options, there’s a lot to be desired. In general, cruise ship cabins have only a handful of channels (around 20 or so). Of those, many will be the cruise line’s own channels, which show information about safety on the ship, shopping information for port, and a map of the ship’s location.

In addition, there are usually a few channels that show movies throughout the day and then a few regular channels you’re used to back home, like HGTV, CNN, Cartoon Network, and the like. There is also usually ESPN, but it’s an international version showing sporting events from around the world.

If you have a favorite program that you love to watch each week, chances are you WON’T be able to watch on the ship. Major sporting events (like NFL Sundays) are usually shown.

Who Is the Cabin Steward? What Do They Do?

The first day that you arrive on your cruise, the Cabin Steward should introduce themselves. This person is the housekeeping service, and you’ll see them plenty. They typically come twice per day — once in the late morning and once in the evening — to clean, ready your room for the night, and restock anything you might need.

If you need anything, don’t hesitate to ask your room steward. From extra towels to separating beds, they can do it all.

Don’t need service twice a day (in our opinion, it’s too much!)? You can let the steward know or simply hang the “Do Not Disturb” tag on the door.

Is Room Service Available?

Don’t feel like changing out of your pajamas for breakfast? Just want to eat a meal without having to fight through other passengers? You’ll be happy to know that room service is available for your cabin.

You’ll normally find a menu somewhere in the room (check the vanity/desk area) that has the full listing of what’s available and the number to call. Room service is available around the clock, but know that there is generally a charge. It’s also customary to tip the person bringing the food a few bucks.

When you are done with your meal, you can stack them in the cabin or place them outside your door. Either way, the room steward will take them away for you when done.

How Much Storage Space Is There?

For the size of the cabin, there is lots of storage space. First there are usually large closets that feature shelves, drawers, along with hangers. So no matter if you’re wanting to put away folded clothes or hang up nice items so they don’t get wrinkled, you’ll have a spot.

Then there are other storage spaces, such as under the bed and the vanity. Cruise bed frames are metal and sit up off the floor with lots of empty space underneath. It’s the perfect spot to put empty suitcases or other large bulky items so they are completely out of the way.

If you run into a situation where you think your room doesn’t have enough storage, chances are you overpacked.

What Should I Bring to Make a Cabin More Comfortable?

Over years of cruising, there are a few cabin items that we’ve found can make your cruise more comfortable. These items aren’t must-haves, but you’ll often be happy you brought them.

Outlet Adapter : We all carry a lot of electronics these days, but many ships (especially older ones) may only have one or two outlets to plug things in. That’s why we like to bring an outlet adapter that plugs into one spot and provides multiple places to plug in chargers, hair straighteners, and anything else you might need. Just make sure that whatever you bring doesn’t have a surge protector as they are not allowed.

Fan : If you’re the sort of person that needs airflow or the white noise provided by a fan, then you’ll want to pack one. Cabins don’t have ceiling fans, and while the air does flow from the vent, it does so pretty soft and quiet. Packing a small fan may make you more comfortable and sleep better.

Shoe Organizer : One great idea is packing a cheap plastic shoe organizer. These can hang over the bathroom door and provide a ton of little pockets to store items. There’s lots of storage in a cruise cabin, but an organizer puts all those small items in one place and within easy reach.

Good Cabin overview, I did not see the handicapped cabin category. On carnival that can be fully accessible to single side (automatic door, larger floor space, flat floor into bathroom, shower bench and grab bars, and more room getting into bed).

The picture of the bathroom is on the new Mardi Gras right? I have not been on there, that is really small I see and hear. Most bathrooms on older carnival ships are larger, with room from the toilet to the shower…lol.

Inside Temperature On Ships

We were on the spirit of adventure over the Xmas / new year period which was a Canaries itinerary and inside the ship the temperature was always pleasant. We felt no need to put on jumpers etc. Tee shirts during the day and short sleeved shirts during the evening.

On Discovery everything was fine for just a shirt at night , I like long sleeved. Except for the club dinning room which for some unknown reason was cold

Keep away from the perimeter public areas as that's where the air con blasts in. Middle is best.

Coming back from the SoD Caribbean cruise in late November, as we got closer to UK and the weather turned grey and miserable, most people seemed to wear a light sweater or long sleeves even during the day. It wasn’t cold but felt more comfortable that way. I was glad of a very light big scarf to wear round my shoulders many evenings throughout the voyage. Certainly no winter clothes necessary but do take a light sweater or similar.

We were on the Spirit of Discovery Christmas and New Year cruise.

Found the temperature on board to be warm. No need for heavy jumpers indoors

I always take a sweater no matter what time of year we cruise since the dining rooms and theaters can be cool or cold.

Agreed. I have found that the indoor temperature can vary a lot from room to room, with some areas can be quite chilly and the room next door significantly warmer. Bring a sweater or a pashima. You won't regret it.

I agree with the other replies. In fact, I have photos of me with my pretty formal night outfit, with a big gray sweatshirt over top because I was so cold in one of the lounges for trivia.

I am planning on warmer clothes the first two days (sun-mon) then summer clothes until the last full day then warmer. I always have sweaters and shawls with me even in the warmest weather as I also tend to get cold easily. Since it is winter here you might want to take a jacket as I am sure the ship will be chilly if you want to walk on deck.

Question anything the facts don't support.

If you are prone to be chilly, take a sweater. Especially on the Caribbean cruises it's better to have it a little cool rather than a little hot and a little humid. I think the wait staff would be very uncomfortable with all they wear and all their activity if they kept the dining rooms much warmer.

They like big boats and they cannot lie.

For many of the first passengers on the world’s largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, the onboard reality of the $2 billion behemoth lived up to the over-the-top hype.

During back-to-back preview sailings from the Port of Miami in late January, travel agents, special guests, members of the media and selfie-snapping influencers giddily explored as much as they could of the 20-story floating city that boasts eight distinct neighborhoods — and can hold nearly 10,000 passengers and crew at full capacity.

As they ate and drank across the ship a shared sentiment formed: Big is indeed beautiful.

“I think it’s definitely a game-changer,” said Tywana Minor, founder of Live Travel Go, a boutique travel agency based in Atlanta. “You can literally be on the ship for a few days and still not even experience everything.”

The first bunch on board explored the myriad offerings with a sort of collective awe. Couples clinked flutes of champagne at the walk-up Bubbles bar in the Central Park neighborhood, one of 40 bars and restaurants on board.

Adults giggled like nervous adolescents as they blasted down water slides with names like Frightening Bolt and Storm Surge in the 17,000-square-foot water park. Pint-sized passengers, meanwhile, found nirvana at Surfside, a family-centric area complete with a beach-themed carousel and wading pool.

A few lucky souls even had the good fortune to snag perhaps the most coveted reservation on the high seas: the 38-seat Empire Supper Club, an eight-course dinner complete with cocktail pairings and live jazz. The fine-dining experience, which costs $200 per person, is fully booked for the next few months.

But it wasn’t just Icon’s splashy main attractions wowing passengers: Surprises awaited around seemingly every corner of the 1,198-foot ship, including pop-up piano performances, magicians and a duo of donut-costumed employees at the breakfast buffet every morning pointing guests toward rows of sinks and reminding them to “washy washy before yummy yummy!”

For many passengers, adjusting to Icon’s staggering size — it’s nearly as long as four New York City blocks — presented a learning curve in itself. Even with signage everywhere, getting lost at some point was a given. Furthermore, the ship’s design — a vast open-air interior with elevators located forward and aft but not in the middle — almost guarantees that passengers will hit (or exceed) their daily step count.

“If you don’t like walking around a lot, this ship is not gonna be for you,” said Linda Miranda , a Newburgh, NY-based travel franchise owner with Cruise Planners.

As an antidote to the go-go-go vibe, Icon’s massive square footage also includes plenty of tranquil nooks and crannies ideal for kicking back and catching your breath: bed loungers overlooking the ocean; cornucopias of outdoor couches and chairs across various decks; and cozy, nest-like booths in the AquaDome, an area featuring a waterfall and wraparound ocean views.

“There are so many spaces that you’re not going to feel the 7,600 passengers it can hold fully occupied,” Miranda said.

To escape the sensory overload altogether, retreat to their staterooms. There are 28 room categories; the most basic accommodations are 157-square-foot interior plus cabins, with rates starting at $3,600 per week for two people.

Meanwhile, one-percenters can splash out with the three-story Ultimate Family Townhouse, which spoils eight guests with amenities like a private patio, outdoor hot tub, in-suite slide, cinema and popcorn machine, and kids’ room. The suite costs, on average, $100,000 per week.

So far, passengers are showing an insatiable appetite for Icon and its outsized experience. When the ship was first announced in October 2022, it broke records as the largest booking day and week in Royal Caribbean’s then 53-year history, according to the cruise line. And the remainder of 2024 sailings are almost sold out, a Royal Caribbean spokesperson confirmed.

But since Icon is the first of a new class of megaships by Royal Caribbean — two more are on the way, with Star of the Seas scheduled to debut in August 2025 — there’s plenty more big fun on the horizon. It’s a prospect that has the chubby chasers of the cruise community twitterpated.

“These news ships, I don’t know how they keep building them bigger and bigger,” said Howard Schildhouse — a retired accountant who writes about his travels on his blog, “ It Must Be Wanderlust ” — “but they do.”

Port of Baltimore suspends ship traffic after bridge collapse: What it means for travel

Travel is being impacted by Tuesday’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse along Interstate 695 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Drivers were immediately directed to take alternate routes through the city, following the early morning incident. What’s less clear is what the bridge collapse may mean for upcoming cruises in and out of Baltimore.

“Vessel traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore is suspended until further notice,” the Port of Baltimore posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Here’s what we know.

Which cruises go to Baltimore?

Several major cruise lines serve Baltimore. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, the industry’s leading trade group, published itineraries in the 2024 calendar year include a dozen ships making 115 stops in Baltimore.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Key Bridge that occurred last night and extend our support and heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” CLIA spokesperson Anne Madison said in an emailed statement. “We join everyone in extending our thanks and appreciation to the first responders and emergency workers in Baltimore, the U.S. Coast Guard, and other professionals who are working with one goal in mind—to save lives. We are closely following this situation.”

Carnival’s website shows Carnival Pride and Carnival Legend also have sailings into or out of Baltimore set for April.

Carnival Legend will temporarily move operations to Norfolk, Virginia.

The ship's current cruise, which left for a planned round-trip sailing from Baltimore on March 24, will end in Norfolk on Sunday. Passengers will then receive free bus rides to Baltimore. The vessel's next cruise will sail round-trip from Norfolk later that day.

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Carnival president Christine Duffy said in a statement. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”

The cruise line has not yet shared plans for Carnival Pride. Carnival's parent company, Carnival Corp., said the temporary change in homeport is estimated to have an impact of up to $10 million on adjusted EBITDA and adjusted net income this year, according to a news release .

Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas, which left from Baltimore on March 23 , will return to Norfolk instead on April 4. "Our guests on board will be provided compensation and complimentary shuttle transportation as well as Wi-Fi and phone calls to adjust their travel arrangements," a spokesperson said in an email.

The ship's April 4 and 12 cruises will leave from Norfolk, too. "Our guests booked to sail with us will receive compensation due to the necessary adjustments made to their vacations," the spokesperson added. "After returning from the April 12 cruise, Vision will head to the Bahamas for its previously scheduled maintenance."

American Cruise Lines has roundtrip sailings from Baltimore scheduled in May, according to its website.

“We will monitor the situation and make adjustments to future cruises if needed, but at the present time our schedules remain unaffected, and our thoughts remain with those affected by the immediate situation and rescue efforts underway,” an American Cruise Lines spokesperson told USA TODAY.

Norwegian Cruise Line doesn’t appear to have any Baltimore sailings until September on Norwegian Sky . The line will stay in contact with the port and share any changes with passengers and travel partners, according to a spokesperson.

"In the meantime, we wish the city of Baltimore strength during this very unfortunate event," they said in an email.

Alternate routes for the Baltimore bridge

Most drivers can take Interstate 95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or Interstate 895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) to avoid the collapsed bridge. However Maryland Transportation Authority notes there are some exceptions .

Vehicles carrying hazardous materials, including more than 10 pounds of propane, are not allowed in the tunnels. Additionally, vehicles more than 13-feet and 6-inches high or 8-feet wide may not use the 1-895 Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. Vehicles more than 14-feet and 6-inches high or 11-feet wide may not use the I-95 Fort McHenry Tunnel.

Those vehicles should use the western portion of I-695 instead.

W hether you prefer family cruises or adults-only cruises , no one wants to get sick while they're on vacation. This is especially true when you're on a ship—after all, it's tricky to cut your trip short if you're floating in the middle of an ocean. Plus, falling ill on a cruise ship can have bigger implications these days. There are considerations related to cruise ships and COVID-19 that are designed to keep everyone aboard safe and healthy.

If you're planning a trip on one of the best cruise lines or one of the most affordable ones, you need to know what to do if you feel under the weather on a cruise ship, whether it's a little sea sickness or a more serious illness or injury. Consider this advice some of the essential cruise tips that all passengers should keep in mind before they board.

Are there still pre-boarding health checks?

Yes. To protect you as well as your fellow passengers and the crew, cruise ship staff screens passengers for health issues prior to boarding. You'll be asked to fill out a form that addresses health questions and illness symptoms like fever, vomiting and diarrhea. You may also have your temperature taken by walking through a thermal-imaging scanner. Checks for certification of COVID-19 vaccination or negative tests have, at least for now, ended (here are other recent changes that might affect your cruise ). A staff member may ask you additional questions, and you might be sent for secondary screening by a doctor. Should they determine that your or anyone else's health would be jeopardized, they may not let you board.

"It's always important to answer any pre-boarding health questionnaires truthfully and to report any signs of illness to the ship's crew as soon as symptoms arise," says Cruise Critic's editor-in-chief, Colleen McDaniel. Don't worry—it doesn't necessarily mean you won't be allowed to board or you'll wind up quarantined. Being honest not only affects your health and the health of everyone on the ship, but it could also affect the care you receive and any compensation either from the cruise line or your travel insurance if something goes wrong. We'll give you more details about insurance below.

What kind of medical facilities are on a cruise ship?

Choosing a cruise line that's a member of the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA)—the largest trade association for the cruise industry—means you'll know the ship meets or surpasses a minimum standard for health and safety. CLIA requires infirmaries to have an equipped examination room and a room for intensive care. Equipment is required to assess and monitor vital signs, administer medications and IV fluids and process some lab tests like checking blood sugar and electrolyte levels and diagnosing some infections. Other typical onboard equipment includes defibrillators, ventilators, cardiac monitors and stretchers. Some ships even have X-ray capabilities.

CLIA members must follow mandatory guidelines for their oceangoing ships, but many non-CLIA members have great medical facilities too. Check any cruise line's website before you book. The number of medical staff on board depends on the size of the ship. Larger ships usually have more than one doctor, as well as a combination of paramedics and nurses. All crew, regardless of their jobs, need to be trained in safety and first aid too.

What happens if you get sick on a cruise ship?

The medical staff on cruise ships can diagnose and treat some illnesses on board and prescribe medications too. While cruise ships typically stock a broad range of meds, including antibiotics, there's not always a large supply. Doctors may give you a prescription that you can fill at a pharmacy in the next port.

If medical staff are concerned about your condition, they may advise—and even require—you to seek the advice of specialists on shore, says William Spangler, MD, global medical director with AIG Travel. Port agents will often arrange a taxi or even an ambulance to the treatment center for you. In the best-case scenario, your appointment will be quick, your issue resolved or aided by the specialist, and you can hop back on board to your cruise cabin to heal while watching the scenery go by.

But that's not always a guarantee. "It's really up to the physician as to how comfortable they feel with keeping you aboard, versus disembarking you to make your way home or to a nearby facility where you can be definitively cared for," says Dr. Spangler. Sometimes it's the ship's itinerary that poses the problem. For example, if the ship has a number of days at sea before it reaches the next port, the ship's doctor and captain might be worried that you couldn't get the help you need if your condition worsens and could deny you continuing with your cruise.

Here are some of the more common illnesses and how they are typically handled onboard.

If you get seasick

Though ships are equipped with stabilizers to maximize comfort, seasickness can happen to even those with the strongest of stomachs in rough waters. Many cruise ships offer seasickness medication to passengers—sometimes it's free of charge and you can take pills from a basket outside the infirmary or at the purser's desk. Medication is also available at the gift shop.

However, it's wise to make a cruise packing list and travel with the medications or remedies that you know work for you, like Dramamine, Gravol or a motion sickness patch. Many people rely on sea sickness bracelets that activate a pressure point on the wrist. Ships' doctors can prescribe stronger medications if needed.

If you have a cold or other mild illness

Before COVID-19, colds and other minor respiratory illnesses were not taken as seriously as they are now. If you have any respiratory symptoms on a cruise, you may be asked to take a COVID test—likely on multiple days and with swabs of both the mouth and nostrils—to rule it out. If COVID-19 is ruled out and the ship's doctor thinks you likely do have just a cold , no one else on board wants to get a cold or other mild illness either. So be extra diligent about washing your hands often, and wear a KN/N95-type mask to keep your germs from spreading.

The ship's medical center will likely give you the same advice as you would get at home—drink lots of (nonalcoholic) fluids and rest. If the doctor suspects your symptoms are caused by bacteria rather than a virus, they may prescribe an antibiotic.

If you have COVID-19

If you come down with COVID-19 while you're on your cruise, you'll likely be quarantined in your cabin. It's important to prevent the spread, because it also affects the blood vessels, and one in 10 infections is causing long-term problems to the heart, circulatory system and brain. If you're quarantined, says Dr. Spangler, "they bring you your meals and they check on you once or twice a day accompanied by one of the ship's nurses." There's likely medication on board that will help ease some of your symptoms, but don't assume that the ship (or the country you're traveling in) will be able to provide antivirals like Paxlovid, even by prescription.

Dr. Spangler also notes that patients may be treated differently. He says a healthy, young person with COVID-19 would likely be quarantined in their cabin, but "if you're 75 years old, with a condition like COPD, hypertension or diabetes, you will likely be disembarked." Cruise ships rarely take chances with passengers that are very ill—or somewhat ill with the likelihood of getting worse.

Your key card will likely be deactivated while you're under quarantine. If you disobey the doctor's orders and leave your cabin anyway, you could be removed from the ship, and the cruise line may ban you from ever traveling with them again. Everything is "at the discretion of the ship's doctor," says Dr. Spangler, "and policies vary on different ships." Some ships will quarantine you for five days, and others will while you're showing symptoms, plus for another 72 hours beyond that to ensure you're symptom-free. Often you'll need to test negative on two antigen tests taken on subsequent days before your quarantine ends.

If you have norovirus

If you haven't heard of this one before, it's also known as viral gastroenteritis, which is highly contagious and presents with symptoms we commonly associate with food poisoning . It's not the stomach flu, though many people use this term to describe it. The CDC estimates there are about 20 million cases of norovirus in the United States annually. It can occur anywhere, and because it is very contagious, it spreads particularly easily when people are in close quarters—like on an all-inclusive cruise . You might hear about norovirus on cruise ships, because cruise lines are required to track outbreaks of gastrointestinal disease, though hotels and restaurants are not.

As with COVID-19, you might be quarantined in your cabin if the ship's doctor suspects you have a contagious disease like norovirus. The doctor may prescribe medications to prevent vomiting and diarrhea and give you advice to drink lots of fluids and rest as much as you can, but there is no treatment for norovirus, and it usually clears up after a few days.

When there are suspected cases of viral gastroenteritis onboard, many cruise ships change their operating procedures. This includes more frequent cleaning of high-touch items like door handles and railings, insisting that passengers sanitize their hands when entering dining rooms, and changing buffets so that it's only staff who touch the serving utensils. You might want to pop on a KN95-type mask too, as there's increasing evidence that norovirus is airborne.

If you have a medical emergency

If you have a serious problem like a heart attack or a stroke or need surgery, the ship's crew will do their best to treat and stabilize you until you can get to a facility at the nearest port that has the resources you need. Someone who has a heart attack or a stroke might be initially treated on board with a defibrillator or thrombolytic medications (which can help break up a blood clot). However, cruise ships' infirmaries are not hospitals, and they are not equipped to treat every health problem. Should the ship's doctor decide that you need care at an onshore hospital, they'll keep you as safe and comfortable as possible until you get there.

Sometimes that means being transferred by boat or helicopter to shore, even diverting the ship from its planned itinerary to reach shore faster. When you're too sick to be treated onboard, Dr. Spangler says, "the ship will disembark you at the next port, and it may not be anywhere near a major metropolis with highly rated medical facilities." It's a wise idea to have a travel insurance plan with robust medical evacuation coverage, since you must follow their orders if the ship's doctor decides you must be medically disembarked.

What happens if you get hurt on a cruise ship?

Dr. Spangler says that really depends on the size of the cruise ship as well as the type of injury. A cut needing a few stitches can usually be addressed on board, as can minor burns. And for something like a minor fracture or a broken arm, "they might provide a splint and pain medication to get you through the end of the cruise," says Dr. Spangler.

More serious bone breaks—like when the bone protrudes through the skin—will be handled differently, according to Dr. Spangler. "Obviously, with an open fracture, you're going to be disembarked after first aid is administered."

How much does it cost to see the doctor on a cruise ship?

Doctors on cruise ships are independent contractors and set their own rates. You can expect a basic visit to cost at least $100. Tests, medications and the use of equipment, like X-rays, will be charged separately.

If you do get sick or injured aboard a cruise ship, any medical costs will be added to your shipboard account. You'll then need to submit receipts to your insurance company to determine what will be reimbursed.

Will your regular medical insurance cover these expenses?

Your everyday medical insurance is unlikely to cover any medical expenses aboard a cruise ship, even if that ship is in U.S. waters. That means it's important to have good travel health insurance. It's a small price to pay for peace of mind and, if you do get sick or injured, coverage of potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars of medical expenses.

Prior to your trip, check your existing insurance to see what it covers and determine any additional insurance you need to purchase. Both third parties and cruise lines offer insurance, but insurance purchased from the cruise line may not be as comprehensive, and reimbursement might be in the form of credit for a future cruise rather than a cash refund. Every insurance policy is different; it pays to read the fine print.

Your insurance may or may not cover a full or partial refund if, for example, you're denied boarding, quarantined in your cabin or have to leave the cruise partway through. That depends both on the reason for not being able to continue with your cruise and the type of insurance you've purchased.

A good travel health insurance company can help you find the closest medical facility that's best suited to treat your condition and, assuming it's not nearby, help you get there, even if it requires expensive transportation. If your condition is very serious, many travel health insurance policies will help a family member get to you or arrange a medical evacuation for you to get home. If you had to pay for these services out of pocket, Dr. Spangler says the price tag could range "from $20,000 easily into the six figures."

How can you stay healthy on a cruise?

Cruise lines' crew work hard to keep everything clean to minimize the spread of communicable diseases, but it's up to you to be cautious as well.

It may bring you peace of mind to know that many cruise lines updated their HVAC and ventilation systems in the first few years of the COVID pandemic. This helps with not just the spread of COVID-19, but also colds, flus and even gastrointestinal diseases. You can also hang out on the deck of your cruise ship rather than indoors whenever possible.

Washing your hands frequently is also important to prevent illnesses. Sanitizer is better than nothing, but washing with soap and water does a better job—though here are the ways you might be washing your hands wrong . Aboard many cruise ships, you'll be asked to sanitize your hands when you enter the dining room. Washing your hands after you leave the restaurant or bar minimizes the spread of your germs too. That keeps everyone, including you, much safer.

Another stay-healthy tip is to try to touch fewer things. No one is suggesting not using the handrail on a staircase, but get in the habit of pushing the elevator button with your elbow and not putting your hands on the bar when you order a drink. And just FYI, if you're sharing these things that germ experts wouldn't share , you're putting yourself at an increased risk of getting sick.

Whenever you travel, you should bring a first-aid kit packed with these essentials so you have key products on hand whenever you need them. For a cruise, add seasickness medication (whether in tablet form like Bonine and Dramamine, or motion sickness patches). Many people find that anti-nausea acupressure wristbands work for them.

Crew member on DALI said everyone on board was safe hours after bridge collapse, official says

A crew member on the DALI cargo ship sent a message hours after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed Tuesday saying everybody on board was safe, according to Apostleship of the Sea director Andy Middleton.

Middleton, who spent time with the captain of the DALI Monday, told CNN’s Laura Coates he reached out to a crew member after hearing about the incident Tuesday morning.

He said there were 22 members aboard the ship from India who were setting sail earlier Tuesday morning and were heading toward Sri Lanka.

“I was able to reach out to a crew member very early this morning around 5:30 (a.m. ET) or 6 (a.m. ET) and get a message to them asking if they were OK,” he said. “That crew member responded within just a few minutes advising that the crew was safe, and everybody that [was] on board was safe.”

Middleton was told by the ship's captain Monday that the vessel was going to take a longer route to avoid risks along the Yemen coast.

“When I was out with the captain yesterday, we were talking while we were driving, and he advised that they were sailing down and around the tip of South Africa in order to avoid the incidents that are going on off the Yemen coast, and it was a safer way to go,” he said.

Middleton said the Apostleship of the Sea is a ministry to seafarers with members that spend time in the port and on the vessels as a friendly face to the seafarers that visit the Port of Baltimore, “taking care of their needs to make sure that they're reminded of their God-given human dignity when they're here in Baltimore.”

Six people, who were believed to be part of a road construction crew, are presumed dead after Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday morning. The collapse came after a 984-foot cargo ship hit the bridge's pillar.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore told reporters Tuesday evening it's a "really heartbreaking conclusion to a challenging day."

Late Tuesday, it was discovered that two of the construction workers who went missing after the bridge collapsed were from Guatemala , the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said late Tuesday.

Here's what you should know to get up to speed:

The victims: Eight people were on the bridge when it fell, according to officials. At least two people were rescued — one was taken to the hospital and was later discharged , fire official and the medical center said.
The incident: Video shows the moment the entire bridge structure falls into the water, as the ship hits one of the bridge's pillars. CNN analysis shows that the ships lights flickered and it veered off course before it hit the bridge. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said the crew on the ship were able to issue a "mayday" before colliding into the bridge, which allowed the authorities to stop incoming traffic from going onto the bridge.
Response efforts: Earlier, dive teams from various state and local agencies were brought in to assist in search-and-rescue operations, according to Maryland State Police Secretary Col. Roland L. Butler Jr.. The mission started with 50 personnel and continued to grow before the Coast Guard announced Tuesday evening that it was suspending its active search-and-rescue operation and transitioning to a "different phase."
The investigation: Authorities are still working to establish exactly how the crash occurred. The National Transportation Safety Board will look into how the bridge was built and investigate the structure itself. It will "take time to dig through" whether the bridge had ever been flagged for any safety deficiencies , NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said.
Rebuilding the bridge: US Sen. Chris Van Hollen said the path to rebuilding the bridge will be "long and expensive." Senior White House adviser Tom Perez told reporters Tuesday “it’s too early” to tell how long it will take to rebuild the bridge. President Joe Biden said Tuesday he wants the federal government to bear the full cost of rebuilding the collapsed bridge, noting that it will not wait for the company who owns the container ship DALI to shoulder the costs. Funding could come from the Federal Highway Administration as well as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, but it may require additional funding from Congress.

2 of the missing construction workers from bridge collapse were from Guatemala, foreign ministry says

Two of the construction workers missing from the bridge collapse in Baltimore were from Guatemala, the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement late Tuesday.

Those missing included a 26-year-old originally from San Luis, Petén. The other is a 35-year-old from Camotán, Chiquimula, the statement said.

The ministry said both were part of a work team “repairing the asphalt on the bridge at the time of the accident.”

The statement did not name the two people missing, but it said the country’s consul general in Maryland “went to the area where the families of those affected are located,” where he hopes to be able to meet with the brothers of both missing people.

The consulate also issued a statement Tuesday saying its consul general in Maryland "remains in contact with local authorities," and also confirmed that two of those missing "were of Guatemalan origin.”

Underwater mapping of bridge collapse area to begin Wednesday, Baltimore fire chief says

Search operations near the Key Bridge collapse have shut down for the night due to dangerous conditions, but the process of underwater mapping with many local, state and federal dive teams will begin Wednesday, Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace told CNN’s Anderson Cooper Tuesday night.

Wallace said the portion of the Patapsco River is “tidal influenced, so it goes through tide cycles just like the open waters of the Chesapeake Bay does.”

The water depths in the area under the bridge vary from 40 feet to more than 60 feet, Wallace said. The deeper the divers go, the colder the temperatures they encounter, and the visibility is zero, he added.

Wallace said when crews arrived Tuesday morning, the surface water temperatures of the Patapsco River were about 47 degrees with an air temperature of 44-45 degrees.

How old?: The Francis Scott Key Bridge, also referred to as just the Key Bridge, opened to traffic in March 1977 and is the final link in the Baltimore Beltway, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA.) It crosses over the 50-foot-deep Patapsco River, where former US attorney Francis Scott Key found inspiration to write the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner, the MDTA says.
How long?: The bridge was 1.6 miles long when standing, MDTA reports.
Traffic volume: More than 30,000 people commuted daily on the bridge, according to Maryland Gov. Wes Moore.
How much did it cost?: The bridge cost $60.3 million to build, MDTA says. Since its collapse, President Joe Biden said he’s committed to helping rebuild the bridge as soon as possible.
About the port: Baltimore ranks as the ninth biggest US port for international cargo. It handled a record 52.3 million tons, valued at $80.8 billion, in 2023. According to the Maryland state government, the port supports 15,330 direct jobs and 139,180 jobs in related services.
About the ship: The bridge collapsed after a container vessel called Dali collided with one of its supports. Dali is operated by Singapore-based Synergy Group but had been chartered to carry cargo by Danish shipping giant Maersk . The ship is about 984 feet long , according to MarineTraffic data. That’s the length of almost three football fields.

Baltimore woman says bridge collapse was "like a piece of family dissolved"

For longtime Baltimore resident, Ceely, who opted not to share her last name, seeing footage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse Tuesday was deeply personal.

“I was very heavy-hearted,” Ceely told CNN. “Very tearful, thinking about the families whose loved ones may be in the water and just remembering when the bridge was constructed, and it was just like a piece of family dissolved.”

Ceely was at a prayer group Tuesday morning when she saw the news. She recalled being afraid when she first crossed the bridge while in Ford Maverick in 1975, but grew to like it because it saved time on the road.

Elder Rashad A. Singletary , a senior pastor who led Tuesday night’s vigil at Mt. Olive Baptist Church told CNN that many church members watched the bridge's construction.

"It’s a part of the community. A lot of our individuals in our congregation drive that bridge to go to work, and so now it’s really a life changing moment,” he said.

More than 18 hours after the collapse of the Baltimore bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said it was a heartbreaking conclusion after the Coast Guard ended the search-and-rescue operation for the six people who were on the bridge when it collapsed.

It's a "really heartbreaking conclusion to a challenging day," he said.

"We put every single asset possible — air, land and sea" to find the missing people, he told reporters on Tuesday evening. "While even though we're moving on now to a recovery mission, we're still fully committed to making sure that we're going to use every single asset to now bring a sense of closure to the families," the governor added.

As the sun sets in Baltimore, six people are presumed dead after a major bridge collapsed overnight Tuesday, according to the Coast Guard. The Francis Scott Key Bridge came down around 1:30 a.m. ET after a cargo ship collided with it.

The Coast Guard said it has ended its active search-and-rescue operation for the missing construction workers who were on the bridge when it collapsed.

What we know: Eight people were on the bridge when it fell, according to officials. At least two people were rescued — one was taken to the hospital and has been discharged . The Coast Guard has been searching for six other people. But, around 7:30 p.m. ET, the Coast Guard said it has transitioned to a “different phase” of operation, now it did “not believe we are going to find any of these individuals alive,” Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath said.
About the ship: The bridge collapsed after a container vessel called Dali collided with one of its supports. The vessel is operated by Singapore-based Synergy Group but had been chartered to carry cargo by Danish shipping giant Maersk . The US Embassy in Singapore has been in contact with the country’s Maritime and Port Authority, a State Department spokesperson said.
The investigation: The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the collapse. A team of 24 experts will dig into nautical operations, vessel operations, safety history records, owners, operators, company policy and any safety management systems or programs, said NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy. A voyage data recorder will be critical to the investigation, she added.
Vehicles on the bridge: Officials are also working to verify the numbers of how many cars and people were on the bridge, Homendy said. Gov. Wes Moore said the quick work of authorities in closing the bridge had saved lives . Radio traffic captured how authorities stopped traffic and worked to clear the bridge seconds before the impact . Maryland State Police Secretary Col. Roland L. Butler Jr. said there is a “ distinct possibility ” more vehicles were on the bridge, but authorities have not found any evidence to support that.
Looking ahead: NTSB will look into how the bridge was built and investigate the structure itself, including if it was flagged for any safety deficiencies , Homendy said. The federal government has also directed its resources to help with search and rescue, to reopen the port and rebuild the bridge, Vice President Kamala Harris said . Earlier, President Joe Biden said t he federal government will pay to fix the bridge.
The economy: Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg warned the collapse will have a serious impact on supply chains . Until the channel is reopened, ships will likely already be changing course for other East Coast ports. Ocean carriers are already being diverted from the Port of Baltimore, where the bridge collapsed, to the Port of Virginia to “keep trade moving."

A bridge in the US city of Baltimore has snapped and collapsed after a ship collided with one of its support columns. Rescuers are searching the water for survivors and the state’s governor has declared a state of emergency.

Joe Biden has said search and rescue efforts remain a “top priority”, as six people are still missing. The president added there was no evidence the collapse of the bridge was intentional, calling it “a terrible accident”.

Here is what we know about the bridge, the ship and the port.

Baltimore’s 1.6-mile (2.57km) Francis Scott Key Bridge was built out of steel and opened in 1977. With four lanes, the bridge is part of Interstate 695 and served as a major route along the ring road that encircles the city in the US state of Maryland.

It is named after the author of the American national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner. The Maryland governor, Wes Moore, said the bridge had been “fully up to code” before Tuesday’s collision and collapse, indicating it met safety standards.

Live video posted on YouTube showed the ship ploughing into the bridge in darkness, with its main section collapsing into the Patapsco River below.

Several vehicles fell into the water, and officials said eight construction workers assisting with a project fell off. Six people remained unaccounted for.

One official said that sonar had detected cars in the water, which is about 50ft (15 metres) deep.

The National Transportation Safety Board is dispatching a team to investigate the disastrous collapse. Andrew Barr, an expert in civil and structural engineering at the University of Sheffield, said: “The video doesn’t show any obvious structural deficiencies with the bridge, but it will not have been designed to survive a head-on collision with such a large vessel.”

Ship-tracking data showed a Singapore-flagged container ship, the Dali, at the location of the bridge where the accident occurred at about 1.30am ET (0530 GMT) on Tuesday.

The Dali, a 290-metre (948ft) cargo vessel, left Baltimore at 1am and was headed for the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo, according to the maritime data platform MarineTraffic. The shipping company Maersk said it had chartered the vessel.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) confirmed that the vessel was registered in Singapore and said the agency was coordinating with the US Coast Guard and the ship’s management company to help. It also said it would investigate the incident itself.

Moore said the ship had lost power around the time it hit the bridge and the vessel’s crew had issued a “mayday” radio call. The ship then appeared to catch fire as part of the bridge collapsed over it, sending plumes of thick, black smoke into the air.

The shipping company Maersk said that it chartered the container ship in Baltimore, with the operator named as Synergy Marine Group. Maersk confirmed that there were 22 crew, and said they were all Indian. None of them were Maersk crew or personnel.

Reuters cited the manager of the ship, Synergy Marine Group, as saying the crew, including the two pilots, had been accounted for and there were no reports of injuries onboard.

Maersk added that there were 4,679 containers on board, roughly half of its 10,000 capacity.

The same vessel was also involved in a collision in 2016 in Antwerp, Belgium, according to VesselFinder and the maritime incident archive Shipwrecklog. At the time, the stern scraped the side of the quay, significantly damaging several metres of the hull. There were reportedly no injuries or adverse pollution and the weather was reported to be fine at the time. The incident was reportedly blamed on the ship’s master and pilot onboard.

The harbour is one of the busiest in the country and an important hub for shipping on the US east coast, especially in transporting road vehicles. It also handles farming, construction machinery and coal, according to a Maryland government website.

Port traffic was suspended until further notice after the bridge collapse.

Why cruise lines need their private islands more than ever

Cruise lines spend big on private islands and destinations exclusive to their guests.
These private Caribbean properties are money trees for companies like Carnival and Royal Caribbean.
In-house destinations are becoming increasingly necessary amid rising fuel costs and port restrictions.

About 140 miles east of Miami, Royal Caribbean's private Bahamas island, Perfect Day at CocoCay , receives thousands of eager families virtually every day of the year.

The cruise line and many of its competitors don't just own ships — they also have land-based portfolios. Throughout the Caribbean and in countries like Honduras and Belize, practically every major cruise company has snatched up and developed beachfront properties to make exclusive to their guests.

To travelers, these secluded ports of call are convenient, safe, and cherished: "The vast majority of people love the islands," Patrick Scholes, the managing director of lodging and leisure-equity research at Truist Securities, told Business Insider.

To cruise lines, they're cash cows. And now, maybe more than ever before, a necessity as operators seek out profits while battling rising operating costs and ever-restrictive ports.

The industry is cruising into a private island renaissance

Cruise lines like Princess, Holland America, and MSC collectively own 16 ports and private destinations in the Caribbean (including properties that are still under development).

Many of them, like CocoCay, are hits.

Michael Bayley, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, told analysts in 2023 that the private island had seen robust demand, including from repeat travelers. So much so that the financial returns on the $350 million investment, launched in 2019, have been "exceptionally high and significantly above its target," Naftali Holtz, CFO of Royal Caribbean Group, said a few months prior.

Given travelers' appetite, Royal Caribbean has continued to expand its splashy Bahamas getaway.

Its most recent addition, the adult-only Hideaway Beach , opened in January, adding to CocoCay's 14-slide waterpark, upscale beach club, massive pool, and umbrella-lined beaches.

But it's not done: The cruise giant plans to open its next development, a 17-acre private beach club on Nassau, Bahamas' Paradise Island, in 2025.

Carnival Corp is also updating its popular private island, Half Moon Cay, with an additional berth to accommodate its largest ships, increasing the destination's guest capacity.

Like its competitor, Carnival has more plans to expand its real estate footprint — this time with Celebration Key, a $500 million exclusive resort on Grand Bahama Island, set to open in 2025.

The vacation-at-sea industry's land-based conquest could continue to grow: Given their benefits, Scholes said he wouldn't be surprised if Royal Caribbean were to announce plans to build another private island in the next five years.

1. Fuel is expensive

Fuel is one of the cruise industry's biggest expenses . Fortunately, most Caribbean-based private destinations are just a night's sailing from Florida's major cruise ports.

Amid rising fuel costs, it's easy to see why cruise lines would want to plan more itineraries around these nearby stops.

In September 2023, Josh Weinstein — president, CEO, and chief climate officer of Carnival Corp — called the forthcoming Celebration Key a "win-win-win for the environment, our guests, and the people of the Bahamas," citing the property's proximity to its Florida homeports and the subsequent reduced fuel expenditure.

It could certainly be a "win" for travelers: In the same call, he told analysts that a guest-fronted fuel surcharge is "certainly not off the table."

2. Private destinations keep profits in-house

Before its debut, pre-cruise bookings for CocoCay's Hideaway Beach surpassed the company's expectations, Jason Liberty, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, told analysts in October 2023.

Admission costs up to $89 per person during peak season. Nearby, entry to the more exclusive beach club could be shy of triple that cost .

Even the otherwise complimentary parts of the island have splurge-enticing options like rentable cabanas and snorkeling gear.

Travelers content with a basic beach chair and the lunch buffet don't have to ball out on these up-charged luxuries. But they sure are hard to resist, especially as cruisers have become eager to splurge on their vacations.

For families, skipping CocoCay's waterpark could be as sacrilegious as skipping Disney World during an Orlando vacation, Scholes said. A day pass to Thrill Waterpark can exceed $100 per person — that's more than $400 down the drain for a family of four in one afternoon.

These destinations have plenty of opportunities for guests to spend big. And because there's no need to rely on other excursion operators, they allow cruise lines to keep more profits in-house.

3. Some popular ports are saying "no" to giant cruise ships

The world's largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas , can carry 7,600 guests and 2,350 crew.

This sudden influx of travelers could overwhelm smaller destinations and their locals, like the just over 25,000 residents of Santorini, Greece, and 25,600 of Key West, Florida.

With concerns like pollution and over-tourism, it's no wonder the popular Greek island has a daily cap on cruise visitors, while its Florida counterpart has faced a fraught battle to restrict cruise tourism .

They're not alone. Cities across the US and Europe have increasingly limited travelers coming by sea — either through size restrictions, daily visitor limits, or complete bans. This includes desirable ports like Juneau, Alaska, French Polynesia, and Venice, Italy.

Ironically, at the same time, mass-market cruise lines have continued to grow the size of their vessels — so much so that several of these new mega-ships are now simply too big to fit into some ports.

So, if you can't beat the ports, why not join them? Especially if you can outfit your private properties with dozens of profit-growing amenities.

Will It Be Cold on the Cruise Ship?

Taking a cruise can be an exciting adventure, but it can also come with some physical challenges. One of the most common questions people have when planning a cruise is – will it be cold on the cruise ship?

The answer depends on several factors, including the time of year, the type of ship and its destination. In general, most cruise ships are climate controlled to maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the year.

However, some parts of the ship may be colder than others due to outside air entering the ship or other environmental factors.

The time of year you travel can also make a difference in how cold it is on board. During winter months, temperatures may drop significantly in certain parts of the world and this can translate to colder temperatures inside the vessel. Depending on where you are going, you should prepare for both hot and cold weather throughout your trip.

I'm on the sailing after yours! Always take a sweater for dinner, regardless of the venue (MDR, WJ, etc.) Since we are driving down from RI we will have warmer clothes anyway.

I'm hopeful that noontime of the first sea day will be seasonable enough to be on deck/balcony:)

Bring a sweater! I always get SO cold watching the shows in the evenings. Half the time, even with a sweater I still steal DH's suit jacket to cover my goosebumps.

Around the ship I just wear jeans and a top. Sometimes during the day I pull out the sweater, because they tend to super air condition the dining areas.

Personally, I think once you get into warmer weather you will not be wearing your jeans. I don't even take mine on Caribbean cruises - too hot and heavy. You could wear them on the first and last days, though, since you are embarking and disembarking at Bayonne.

Inside the ship will be air conditioned so you might want a wrap for dinner or the theater. It will be refreshing though, trust me. :) You can control your A/C in your cabin but not inside the other areas of the ship, so best take something and not have to use it, rather than wishing you had brought it.

The only "bad" times I've ever had on a cruise were directly related to the sub-zero A/C (to me) inside some ships or particular areas of ships. Because I'm very cold-natured, I actually begin to hurt/ache/sick when I get too cold...so now I always pack some pretty wraps, jackets, sweaters, etc., to wear whenever I get too cold.

Lots of folks find the cold temps to be refreshing, but I'm not one of them. Give me the sunshine and high 90's out on deck anytime!:)

I think that Royal Caribbean is trying to save money on its utility bills. ;)

The last couple of cruises, it was quite noticeably warmer. No more "it's cold at the show" or "it's freezing in the dining room."

I'd make sure I packed some sort of wrap or cover for the evenings. I feel the cold a lot and most times have needed something to keep the chill at bay.

It's great news (for me) to hear that indoor temps on RCCL's ships are warmer than they've been on my previous cruises! Maybe now I can enjoy my dinner without wishing I had a comforter wrapped around my body!!!!!!!:eek:

Did this a few years ago. When we awoke the morning after we sailed, it was snowing. I only had 1 sweater and wore it most of the week until I left it somewhere and someone else who was cold snatched it. Pants were needed to be outdoors. Also some areas were downright chilly where doors to the outside opened frequently. Pack a variety. Shorts were fine for the islands but the sea days were definitely not shorts temperatures. Will not do that time again because I like being outdoors and it was just plain cold 2 of 9 days.

If you're cold-natured (i.e. my wife), it'll feel chilly. If you're hot-natured (i.e. me), it'll feel great! :)

It is very old post and topic, but I found this prior to our Christmas cruise, and thought I'd give an update:

At least for Quantum of the Seas Shanghai Nagsaki Busan Shanghai.

The air temperature ranged from 6C to 11C so quite cold.

We knew it was going to be cold, so we packed a lot of coats and jackets and even thermal wear.

Our Cabins had temperature control, so we can set it to 74F or whatever you like, so you can be quite warm in your Cabin.

Inside Temperatures in the ship is also quite regulated, and I was able to walk around in just a Tshirt and jeans. The problem was that I decided to walk out on the deck for short cut, and that really chilled me a lot, so from then on, I still wore a jacket from then on. Temperatures in Theaters and restaurants are very comfortable and I could take off my jacket without any problem
