Loro Parque

Loro Parque is a popular zoo and animal park, located in Puerto de la Cruz, home to a diverse range of animals, including parrots, dolphins, sea lions, and orcas.

If you're staying in the south of Tenerife take into consideration that the journey to reach Puerto de la Cruz takes around 1 - 1,5 hours each way, so it will be a full day trip to visit Loro Parque, but in our opinion, it's worth it and we've visited several times over the years.

Masca Valley

Take a trip to Masca , a picturesque village nestled in a stunning valley. The journey itself offers breathtaking views, and once in Masca, you can explore the village and its surroundings.

The drive there is not for the faint of heart, so if you're a nervous driver you should better book a tour, sit back on the bus and simply enjoy the view of Masca valley.

Stargazing Excursions 

Due to its clear skies and minimal light pollution, Tenerife is an excellent location for stargazing. Join a night excursion to Teide or other designated spots for a celestial experience.

If you’re thinking about taking an excursion on Tenerife , you’re in for a treat. Many of the most popular day trips in Tenerife visit the island’s main points of interest, like Mount Teide, or involve fun activities like whale-watching.

Below, I’ll share the best excursions in Tenerife , including their prices and what to expect. I’d also like to point out that the best way to get around the island is by renting a car in Tenerife . However, if you don’t want to do that, you can book this tour from the north or this tour from the south , and explore the top attractions on the island. For example, both tours go to the amazing cliffs in Los Gigantes , the traditional town of Candelaria , the beautiful village of La Orotava , and other must-see places in Tenerife .

1. Mount Teide, one of the most popular excursions in Tenerife

First, this tour is one of the best excursions in Tenerife , as it takes you to the island’s crown jewel, Mount Teide. This is one of the most iconic places to visit in Tenerife , and if you take this tour, you’ll have your transportation, cable car ticket, and hiking permit taken care of.

This Tenerife day tour departs from Puerto de la Cruz, where there are several pick-up points, and begins with a bus ride to the base of the cable car station in Teide National Park, at an elevation of 7,730 feet. From there, you’ll take the cable car up to La Rambleta, which is 11,665 feet above sea level. Then, it’s only about 650 feet to the top, so you’ll walk the Telesforo Bravo path to the end.

1. Mount Teide, one of the most popular excursions in Tenerife –  Efrén Yanes

The nice thing about booking this Tenerife excursion is that you won’t have to worry about getting the permit to access the summit since it’s included in your tour booking. You’ll also have the advantage of being accompanied by a guide, who will explain all kinds of interesting facts about Teide National Park, a declared UNESCO World Heritage Site.

2. Dolphin and whale-watching, the best tour in Tenerife

Without a doubt, a Tenerife dolphin trip is one of the coolest experiences and something we always try to do whenever we visit the island. You can see up to 21 different species of cetaceans here, with the dolphins and pilot whales being the easiest to spot.

Even if you can rent your own boat in Tenerife with a skipper , there are lots of whale and dolphin-watching tours in Tenerife , but I recommend the tour we took . It departs from Puerto Colón in Costa Adeje and travels 2-2.5 miles to search for dolphins and whales. Best of all, this Tenerife boat trip takes place on a catamaran with a clear bottom, so you can see the cetaceans under the water.

The day we took this tour, we were lucky to see many species, including quite a few pilot whales. However, you should keep in mind that no two whale excursions in Tenerife are alike, as these are wild animals that live in total freedom. Even so, the tour operators have many years of experience, so they can predict the whales’ and dolphins’ movements with excellent accuracy.

The Masca Gorge is in Teno Rural Park and forms one of the most stunning landscapes on the island. In fact, it’s one of the most-visited places in Tenerife, after Mount Teide. One of the best ways to explore this striking area is by taking a guided excursion like this one .

The tour begins in the Plaza de Masca, where you’ll meet your group and begin the 6.2-mile walk. During the hike, you’ll descend the gorge, following the Masca stream to the beach. Then, you’ll make the ascent back up the ravine.

The route is quite challenging, so I only recommend this Tenerife excursion for people who are in good physical shape and have hiking experience. Of course, if you tackle this route, you’ll be rewarded with some of the most impressive views on the island, so it’s well worth the effort.

6. Snorkeling with turtles, a breathtaking excursion in Tenerife

Another boat trip in Tenerife that you’ll enjoy is a snorkeling excursion. This way, you can witness the rich diversity of the seabed and maybe even dive among the sea turtles.

I recommend this tour in particular, which involves kayaking out to the sea. Since you’ll be in a kayak and not a motorized boat, you’ll be able to get closer to the turtles, dolphins, and other marine life without disturbing them. In fact, your chances of spotting dolphins are very high since up to five different species can be found in these waters.

I consider this to be one of the best excursions in southern Tenerife , as nothing is quite as incredible as seeing these beautiful creatures up close. This tour also includes some time to go snorkeling among the sea turtles and fish, so it’s one of those activities in Tenerife South that you’ll never forget.

If that sounds good to you, I recommend this tour , which will allow you to witness one of the most gorgeous sunsets on the island, followed by the starry night sky. You’ll be accompanied by an expert guide who will show you how to use telescopes to spot shooting stars, nebulae, star clusters, and some planets. Another one of the best excursions in Tenerife goes to another island, specifically La Palma . This is considered one of the most gorgeous islands, as well as one of the quietest since it isn’t crowded with tourists.

You can take a boat trip from Tenerife to La Palma like this one . It departs from Los Cristianos and heads towards La Palma’s capital of Santa Cruz de La Palma. This city boasts a charming historic center, so you can start there and get to know the island.

During the tour, you’ll learn about the eruption of the Tajogaite Volcano, also known as Cumbre Vieja, as well as enjoy magnificent views from the La Concepción viewpoint, the highest part of the Caldera Volcano. 12 epic shore excursions in Tenerife

Tenerife is famous for its water sports scene, but it’s not just about surfing and windsurfing, it’s also an incredible place to go kayaking!

Los Gigantes (or “The Giants”) is a series of cliffs on the coast of Tenerife, which reach up to 400 metres in height. It’s an imposing natural spectacle, and one of the best ways to admire it is by kayak.

We started our kayaking tour from Puerto de Santiago, the town just next to Los Gigantes cliffs. There are a variety of different tours, all of varying lengths, but the one we did was two hours.

I found this was enough to get a feeling for this incredible experience, without it getting too long or getting tired from the kayaking.

In two hours you will do a loop starting from the harbour, and kayaking all the way below these imposing cliffs. Paddling on your kayak, looking up at these 400m high cliffs, sure has a way to make you feel small.

It’s also a great activity for bird spotting fans, as the cliffs are covered with seagull nests! You can see them flying over the cliffs, and hear their cries as they accompany you on your kayaking experience.

Catamaran adventure & Whale watching

Did you know Tenerife was the first Whale Heritage Site in Europe? It goes without saying that it’s an incredible place to go whale and dolphin watching .

Here you’re pretty much guaranteed to see whales at any time of year, which makes it perfect for these catamaran tours.

We did the half day shore experience on board a spacious and luxurious catamaran, setting off from Puerto Colon in Costa Adeje.

The tour started off with a swimming stop at Playa Diego Hernandez, where we were served a tasty paella for lunch.

From there we then started the whale spotting part of the cruise!

The captain sailed us to the protected part of the sea, where he knew it was most likely to spot them, and we soon saw our first pod of pilot whales.  

You obviously can’t get too close to the whales so as to not disturb them, but from the comfort of your catamaran you’ll be able to see them swimming past, their fins occasionally poking out of the water.

If you want to see whales and dolphins, this shore experience is the best way to do so, thanks to how likely it is to spot them in Tenerife.

Before boarding we were told there was a 99% to see whales and 60% to see dolphins, which are pretty good odds if you ask me!

Jet Ski safari & beach time

Another fun water-based experience you can do in Tenerife is a jet ski safari. Starting in Puerto Colon, you will board your jet ski and embark on a safari along the coastline of Tenerife.

You will have the option of choosing whether you want a single or double jet ski. This is ideal because, if like me you don’t want to drive the jet ski, you can still experience it as a passenger.

The tour lasts around 2 hours, and the exact distance travelled will depend on the group and how fast the jet skis are being driven.

Regardless of where you get to, you’re guaranteed to enjoy an adrenaline rush and thrilling experience!

You will whizz by the coast of Tenerife, enjoying the view of the mountains and fancy resorts dotted along the coast, and maybe even do a quick swim stop during the tour!

This is a half-day shore experience, so you could pair it with another activity in the south of Tenerife, like whale watching or kayaking.

The Water Kingdom: Siam Park

This one is a bit different as it isn’t exactly an organised tour. Through the new system “Musement”, you can purchase entry tickets to Siam Park, the biggest waterpark in Europe, at a competitive price.

There won’t be an organised shuttle bus so you will have to make your own way there from the Tenerife cruise terminal.

This gives you considerably more freedom than the standard organised tours, as you can go and come back at the time you want, without having to wait for the rest of a group.

Siam Park offers loads of different types of rides, both scary and relaxing, both for adults and for children. It’s a very fun way to spend a day, and especially if you’re on a family cruise, the children are sure to love it!

One thing you can do to make your time at Siam Park more enjoyable is to book the Fast Pass or VIP ticket. Especially if you’re visiting in high season, the queues can be huge!

You’ll spend a bit more money, but if you’re only at Siam Park for a day you don’t want to waste it queueing.

We had the Fast Pass bracelet and never waited more than 5 minutes for a ride. Make sure to go on The Dragon, it’s my favourite as it’s both thrilling and terrifying at the same time!

Welcome to Siam Park!

Mount Teide Half Day & Cable Car

Mount Teide is without a doubt one of the most incredible sights of Tenerife . With its 3,715m, it’s the highest peak in Spain and the second highest volcano in Europe.

Teide National Park stretches for just under 190km squared, and covers a huge variety of landscapes and views.

Driving from the cruise terminal at sea level, all the way up to Mount Teide, watching the landscape change as you drive past is already an amazing start, just wait till you reach the peak!

This shore experience lasts half a day.

Exploring the unique volcanic landscapes of Teide National Park in Tenerife

They will take you to a number of viewpoints in Teide National Park, where you can enjoy the view over the Mount Teide peak, the sea of clouds and island below, and the unique volcanic landscape of Teide.

If the weather allows it, you will also take the cable car up to the peak of Mount Teide.

Unfortunately we weren’t able to do so as the winds were above 55 km/h, but standing at the top of the highest Spanish peak, enjoying the view over Tenerife, the sea and surrounding islands is a breathtaking experience.

This shore experience is perfect for the nature lovers, who want to be outdoors and enjoy vast and unique landscapes and views.  

Stargazing at Mount Teide

Thanks to the Fly Canaries cruises, which will spend a night in the cruise port of Tenerife, you’ll be able to experience Tenerife, and Teide, by night.

Mount Teide is one of the best places to go star gazing in Europe.

Being so far above the cities of the island means that the sky, as seen from Mount Teide, is almost entirely free of light pollution. It’s part of the reason why Teide is home to a number of international telescopes.

From Tenerife you can see 83 of the 88 officially recognised constellations, a fact which enabled the sky of Teide National Park to be recognised as a “Starlight Destination”.

In this shore experience you will have the opportunity to admire the Milky Way, as well as all the stars and galaxies visible from Tenerife.

We had a super knowledgeable and passionate guide, who gave us loads of information on the constellations we were seeing.

You will not only learn about the history and conformation of the night sky and galaxies, but you’ll be able to see them first hand! In my opinion it’s one of the most magical experiences you can have in Tenerife.

Dinner & Show at Hard Rock Cafe

Similarly to the stargazing at Teide, this is a tour that you’ll be able to experience thanks to the overnight stay in Tenerife of the new Fly Canaries cruises.

If you want to see the nightlife of Tenerife and the Golden Mile, there is no better place to do so than Hard Rock Cafe!

Here you will be treated to a delicious meal, the exact menu will change depending on the package you choose, but you can expect tasty burgers and ribs to be on the menu!

During the dinner the show will start, and you’ll get to hear some epic rock music.

The artists playing change all the time, but the music style is usually similar. It’s Hard Rock Cafe after all! This shore experience is available both as an organised tour or through “Musement”.

Personally, I would suggest purchasing it through “Musement” and combining it with another experience in the south of Tenerife, like Siam Park, whale watching or kayaking.

Hard Rock Cafe is located on the south of the island, whilst the cruise terminal is in the north. 

Unless you’re a very hardcore rock and Hard Rock Cafe fan, driving an hour there and then another hour back for a dinner show will be a bit much.

If you combine it with another activity in the south then you can optimise the travel time, and turn it into a full Tenerife exploring day!

Wine & Food Canary style

Tenerife isn’t just an island of stunning natural beauty, it’s also rich in culture and history. Part of that history is reflected in Tenerife’s culinary traditions.

If, like me, you love trying local foods when travelling, this half day Wine & Food Canary Style shore experience is perfect for you.

You will visit El Calderito de la Abuela, a local restaurant in the north of the island, run by two brothers.

Here you will first see a fun cooking show, where brothers Mario and Fabian will show you how to make traditional Canarian “mojo verde” sauce.

During the cooking show they will also tell you about the history of their restaurant, their family and the cuisine they serve. After the show, it’s time to actually try their delicious food!

The restaurant itself is in a very scenic spot, with huge windows overlooking the coastline of Tenerife.

You can sit back, relax, enjoy the view and taste a variety of Canarian delicacies, the perfect way to learn more about the traditions of this beautiful island!

After lunch you will be taken to Bodegas Monje, a local family winery for the wine tasting part of the experience.

They will first give you a tour of the winery, showing you the vineyard, the wine barrels and various machines involved in the wine making process.

You’ll then relax sit on their lovely outdoor terrace, enjoying the view over the vineyards and sea, while tasting delicious local wine and some typical Canadian nibbles like almogrote cheese.

Abaco Mansion lunch & San Pedro Walk

This is another great shore experience, which combines food, history and even nature.

This tour starts at a traditional Canarian mansion, where you will be served a delicious local lunch, followed by a lovely coastal walk at one of the most scenic trails of the island.

Abaco Mansion isn’t only where you will be eating, it’s also a historical mansion and you will be taken on a tour of the mansion before lunch.

The lady that gave us a tour of the mansion is called Rebecca, and she was super passionate about the work they do there.

The mansion is perfectly maintained in the local Canarian style, with wooden beams and the vintage architecture style.

You will learn about the history of the mansion, its owner, the tours and events they carry out there and the history of Canarian architecture more widely.

After lunch you will do the beautiful San Pedro Walk, also known as Rambla de Castro. This is a linear coastal trail, which is often ranked amongst the best hikes in Tenerife , thanks to its beautiful coastal views.

As you walk in the shade of tall palm trees you can enjoy views over the sea on one side, and lush green vegetation on the other.

It’s the perfect walk to get some movement in after the delicious lunch at Abaco Mansion!

Beach yoga and mojitos

If you’re not too fussed about spending hours sightseeing around Tenerife, but still want to do something unique on the island, then this beach yoga and mojitos experience is perfect for you!

You will be taken to Playa de las Teresitas, one of the most beautiful beaches in Tenerife.

Stretching for 1.5km, this incredible artificial beach is is characterised by its golden sand, which was imported from the Sahara Desert, its turquoise water and the towering cliffs that surround it.

It’s a beautiful beach to just sit and relax, but when you add to it a fun activity like yoga, it becomes the perfect setting!

You will spend around one hour moving from position to position through your yoga flow, and then reward yourself with some delicious mojitos.

We all know that mojitos taste better on the beach right?!

Located in the north of Tenerife, close to the cruise terminal, you’ll find the gorgeous town of San Cristobal de La Laguna, and the unique Anaga Rural Park.

San Cristobal de La Laguna, colloquially shortened to just La Laguna, is a UNESCO world heritage site, and was the capital of Tenerife until the 18th Century.

In La Laguna you will find cute cobbled streets lined with colourful houses, characterised by their unique colonial architecture.

Many of the museums and historical houses also still display the unique Canadian style patios, with wooden columns and beams.

It’s a lovely town to discover, which I highly recommend adding to every Tenerife itinerary .

After La Laguna you will visit Anaga Rural Park, my favourite part of the island. Anaga is a place of stunning natural beauty, with rolling green hills, fairy-like forests and jagged mountain tops.

You will start at the beautiful Mirador Cruz del Carmen, and then go for a walk in Anaga forest.

From the viewpoint you will enjoy a stunning view over the surrounding green countryside, with the peak of Mount Teide towering above it.

If you’re visiting Tenerife in winter , then you might even be lucky enough to see Mount Teide with snow, adding more contrast to the green rolling hills below!

The walking part of the tour will take you through some of the iconic spots of Anaga. Walking through the forest of Anaga feels like walking through an enchanted forest, with the occasional unexpected viewpoint over the sea.

Now onto a lowdown of the best P&O Cruises shore experiences in Tenerife that I’ve experienced first hand.

Best Tenerife Cruise Excursions

The cruise excursions can be split by type of traveller so it’s easy to find something that suits your tastes.

For Adventurers

Tenerife is known for its dramatic landscapes and miles of coastline, which provide a playground for nature lovers.

Explore Mount Teide National Park

First up is my favourite excursion!

Tenerife is home to Spain’s highest point, Mount Teide, standing at 3715m. It is an active volcano , and the surrounding National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site .

This half day shore excursion includes stops at several viewpoints above the clouds that really let you experience the Mars-like landscapes of this volcano, alongside the 8 minute cable car ride to the peak .

Note: If there are high winds (over 55 km per hour) the cable car will close, but the viewpoints along the way are incredible on their own so I would still suggest booking it.

For me it was the highlight of my 4 days in Tenerife.

Mount Teide reminded me of the week I spent in Atacama desert in Chile , the otherworldly landscapes are so similar, but Tenerife is so much closer to home and I can see myself visiting again, to do the overnight hike to the peak.

Masca Valley, Quad Biking & Rustic Lunch

Perfect for adrenaline seekers , this three part excursion includes a scenic drive up to the Masca Valley viewpoint, a quad biking tour and a traditional lunch.

We only experienced the first part of this tour but the viewpoint (over a thousand metres high) was absolutely stunning, and a great place to capture just how beautiful the island is.

From the top you’ll be surrounded by cacti and see the winding roads that help you navigate this part of the island.

It is one of the best photo spots on the island so make sure your phone and camera battery is charged!

Stargazing at Mount Teide

With the new Fly-Canaries cruises , you’ll be able to spend a night docked in Tenerife meaning you can experience stargazing as an evening shore excursion.

You may not know this but Tenerife is the best place to stargaze in Europe due to it’s low light pollution and high altitude.

It is one of the reasons why Mount Teide is home to a number of international telescopes.

In this unmissable tour, you’ll have an expert guide share their knowledge of astronomy , and you’ll be able to observe the Milky Way , stars and the constellations in all their glory.

We even got lucky enough to see the Hubble Space Telescope whizz past us in the sky!

This cruise excursion is really special and reminded me of the Northern Lights tour I did with P&O Cruises in Norway a few years back.

Remember to dress up warm and bring gloves , the mountain does get cold at night and you’ll be outside for the duration of this magical experience.

For Culture Vultures

Tenerife has so much history , from colonial cities to pristine gardens, the cultural shore excursions cover so much.

Wind Cave & Garachico Village

This interesting excursion visits the wind cave (Cueva del Viento), the largest volcanic tube in the EU.

It is 18km long, and to explore the cave you must have suitable footwear and long trousers.

After the wind cave, you’ll head over to Garachico Village , in the northwest of Tenerife.

This tiny colonial village dates back to the 15th Century is one of the Canary Island’s oldest villages, and is surrounded by natural pools which are a tourist favourite!

The village itself is characterised by cobbled streets , colourful buildings and a quaint plaza, and you can see why it used to be a popular trading port between Europe and the Americas.

UNESCO Forest Walk & La Laguna World Heritage

This half day heritage tour visits the beautiful and UNESCO World Heritage site of San Cristobal de La Laguna.

This charming city located in the north of the island (close to the cruise terminal) was once the capital of the island.

There are plenty of pretty buildings and colonial architecture and interestingly the layout of the city was used a blueprint for a number of South American cities , that’s why it felt so familiar to me!

Make sure you visit the cathedral and step inside the buildings to explore the courtyards – they will surprise you!

After visiting La Laguna, you’ll head to Anaga Rural Park , where you can experience the Mirador Cruz del Carmen viewpoint and a walk through the laurel forests (these were a favourite of mine in Madeira! ).

Gardens & Puerto De la Cruz

This shore experience visits the city of Puerto de la Cruz in the north of the island, followed by a visit to the unique botanical gardens of Sitio Litre.

It is the oldest garden in Tenerife , over 220 years, and has plenty of exotic plants from Africa and the Americas, including the largest collection of orchids on the island and the oldest dragon tree in Puerto de la Cruz.

There have been many famous visitors in the past including Agatha Christie, the Beatles, and William Wilde, and there is a cute cafe which is the perfect place to relax and take in the stunning scenery.

For Foodies

There are several food and drink shore experiences with P&O cruises , including wine tasting at Monje, lunch at Abaco Mansion, dinner at Hard Rock Cafe, fresh mojitos on the beach and a cooking demo with the Torres brothers.

Wine & Food Canary Style

Tenerife’s culinary traditions are best experienced with this half day Wine & Food Canary Style tour.

Firstly you will visit El Calderito de la Abuela , a local restaurant in the north of the island, run by two brothers, Mario and Fabian.

Here you will first experience an interactive cooking show, where you will see the brothers make a traditional Canarian “mojo verde” sauce .

At the same time you will learn about the history of the cuisine and the story of their family.

I was especially pleased to see most of the ingredients for their dishes were grown locally in the garden right next to the restaurant, so the food was as fresh as possible!

The restaurant itself, has stunning views of the Tenerife coastline , and after the demo you will get to enjoy the spoils as well as a traditional Canary Island lunch, full of local favourites.

After lunch you’ll head over to Bodegas Monje , a local family winery, where you will tour the wine cellar before tasting a few of their most popular wines on the outdoor terrace overlooking the vineyard and sea.

Beach Yoga & Mojitos at Las Teresitas Beach

This fun excursion is located on Playa de las Teresitas, an incredible 1.5km long crescent-shaped beach with golden coloured sand (due to it being imported from the Sahara desert !).

It is one of the most beautiful beaches in Tenerife and a firm favourite with visitors who want to relax and take in some sun in a wonderful setting.

The excursion starts with beach yoga under the palm trees (yoga is one of my favourite ways to exercise on a cruise, not too impactful but a great way to get moving) before enjoying a tasty mojito at a local beach bar , and soaking up those holiday vibes.

Abaco Mansion Lunch & San Pedro Walk

This historic shore excursion lets you take a stroll back in time at Abaco Mansion before exploring San Pedro.

Firstly you will visit Abaco Mansion , an 18th century building in Puerto de la Cruz that is now a museum and event space .

You’ll get the chance to learn about the history of the building whilst touring the property and grounds (with a Sangria in hand).

After the tour, enjoy a local lunch on the deck infront of the pool.

After the meal, you will burn off some calories on the San Pedro walk (also known as Rambla de Castro ).

It is a relatively easy hike and has incredible coastal views along the whole way.

Hard Rock Café Dinner & Show

This is a new offering for the Fly-Canaries cruises that are docking in Tenerife, meaning you have an evening on the island and can enjoy a night out.

Situated on the Golden Mile in the south of the island is Hard Rock Cafe Tenerife.

There is no official cruise shore excursion to this venue but dinner and a show can be booked via Musement , click here to read more about how Musement works.

This is a popular spot for tourists so booking in advance is required , but you’ll be treated to delicious American classics like burgers, ribs, fries and shakes, as well as a live rock show.

For Water Lovers

There are four fabulous excursions that are perfect for those who love the water , from sea kayaking to whale and dolphin watching on a catamaran, to whizzing around on a Jet ski and even getting drenched at the worlds best water park!

Sea Kayaking at Los Gigantes Cliffs

This was the first half day excursion we did in Tenerife, and it was a great way to explore these 600m high cliffs.

We drove to Puerto de Santiago and then paired up at the harbour before spending two hours kayaking up to the rugged cliffs and back.

It was not as strenuous as that sounds, it was actually really good fun, and we had plenty of photo stops and breaks, so we weren’t tired at the end of it, but we did work up an appetite!

We had a guide to show us where the best spots were and we even got to spot some rocks covered in crabs!

If you want to make the most of it, I would suggest bringing sunglasses, water shoes , a waterproof dry bag , waterproof phone case or a Go Pro , so you can capture the experience.

Catamaran Adventure & Whale Watching

The best way to witness the beautiful coastline of Tenerife is from the water.

This half day trip from Puerto Colon Harbour allows you to spend several hours with the wind in your hair, on this luxury catamaran.

We had time to lounge around on the comfy day beds , swim in the sea , enjoy a paella lunch and even spot some whales!

Whale watching is popular all year round in Tenerife as it is possible to see over 20 different whale species across the seasons.

We visited in June and were lucky to see a pod of short finned pilot whales.

Jet Ski Safari and Beach Time

One of the best adrenaline rushes you can have in Tenerife is by jumping on a jet ski!

Having only ever jet skiied once (as a passenger) in Thailand , back in 2008, this was a half day excursion I was both excited and slightly nervous about!

After a safety briefing and an explanation of the controls, we had a choice single or double jetski.

Pairing up felt like the right choice this time round, and my buddy and I, took it in turns to take control and ride the jet ski for a total of two hours , and we both really enjoyed it, by the end we had the confidence to ride alone, so watch this space for next time!

After the jet ski safari, you can relax on the beach and take in the sun.

Siam Park Water Kingdom

Dubbed one of the best water parks in the world , Siam Park is the largest in Europe.

With a Thai theme, there are 4 acres of rides, slides and lazy rivers to enjoy!

This is a great choice for families but we visited as a group of adults and absolutely loved it!

Tickets to Siam Park can be booked via Musement , so you don’t have a certain pickup or drop off time and you can choose how long to spend at the park.

Though I would suggest getting their early so you have the entire day and aren’t rushing to fit in as many rides as possible.

I would also suggest getting the fast pass tickets , as the queue jumps meant we didn’t have to wait more than 5 minutes for a ride.

I would also suggest going in groups of even numbers .

We were a group of 3 and sometimes had to split up, this wasn’t a big issue but groups of 2 or 4 will find it easier.

There are tonnes of rides but my favourites were the adrenaline rides namely, The Dragon, Singha, Mekong Rapids, Kinnaree, Patong Rapids, and the Vulcano.

After these we had lunch at the park and then joined the lazy Mai Thai river to digest our food.

My top tip for this ride is to make sure you choose the route that goes through the shark tank , it is definitely worth the short wait!

If you want to just relax there are plenty of sun loungers found throughout the water park.

For this day trip make sure you bring a towel, change of clothes, and water shoes !

The 10 best things to do in Tenerife

Y es, there are a million and one beaches (well, 72 listed on the tourist board website at least) on which to stretch out, switch off and toast into a nice shade of bronze. But to do just that is nothing short of a crime on such a multi-faceted island. Up, down, inside, outside: everywhere you look there are man-made and natural attractions to be had, from stargazing in Europe’s clearest skies to conquering the planet’s third-largest volcano, and from splashing around in the world’s most popular water park, to getting within touching distance of dolphins in the wild.

Ride to the top of the island

You can’t get to the very top of Tenerife’s omnipresent volcano, Teide, without a prearranged pass, but you can get to within 600 ft by cable car. It goes without saying, the views are spectacular, but it’s the sheer sense of scale that will really take your breath away. What you see above ground is only the tip of what is one of the three largest volcanoes on the planet.

Insider tip: It doesn’t take much by way of adverse weather for the cable car to stop running, so always check in advance before you set off. To avoid the ticket box queues in situ, you can also buy a pass online.

Mingle with marine mammals in the wild

There are plenty of excursions that depart from the harbours of Los Cristianos, Puerto Colon and Las Galletas. All will take you out to see the island’s resident pods of pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins. Also keep your eye out for other breeds that have been seen passing through these waters, such as minke, sperm and killer whales too.

Insider tip: If you want to up the ante, you can charter your own boat and crew for anything from a couple of hours to a full day with Boat Hire Tenerife. Most trips include food and drink, plus additional time for snorkelling in a bay.

Dive to the depths… and still keep dry

Batten down the hatches of the bright yellow sub in Las Galletas harbour for a one-hour trip to a depth of 30 metres with Submarine Safaris. Within this specially designed, three-million-euro tourist submarine, there are 22 large viewing portholes through which you’ll see huge stingrays and a whole circus of colourful marine life feeding around a sunken fishing boat and the harbour wall.

Insider tip: Try and sit near the front of the submarine and you’ll get an extra view over the pilots-shoulder through the front cockpit window. Book online for a 10 per cent discount, and ask about the free bus transfers from the resort areas.

Have a picnic in a forest

Forest, you might ask? In Tenerife? Those who only know the island as a beach destination are missing out on the glorious greenery just a short drive away. The mountain pine forests above 3000 ft are dotted with recreational areas where stone barbecues and timber picnic tables have been built for day-trippers to just turn up and use. Try Chio or Las Lajas.

Insider tip: Buy a bag of charcoal or two to take up. The forestry department used to provide firewood but this service seems to have stopped, and there’s never much in the way of fallen deadwood near these popular spots.

Get acoustically awed

The Adan Martin Tenerife Auditorium is worth a visit just for its photogenic qualities alone, but the acoustics are incredible. This cultural icon with extraordinary, gravity-defying architecture hosts a plethora of spectacles inside its gleaming white shell. It’s home to the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, but rock, opera and folk also regularly resonate inside its acoustically perfect confines.

Insider tip: Even if you can’t make a show, the guided tours are well worth your time to discover the unique design that has created one of the best acoustic environments in the world. Daily tours take place between 10am and 4pm.

Get your culture fix

Like London’s South Bank Centre, the Tenerife Espacio de las Artes has become a one-stop-shop for art and culture lovers. This uber-modern venue exhibits a broad stroke of genres from abstract to ancient, but with a leaning towards the contemporary. It also has a small cinema that screens original language films, along with an airy café where you can stop for a cup of its namesake.

Insider tip: If you’re looking for something beyond lace tablecloths, Mount Teide fridge magnets and other typical tourist souvenirs, the museum shop offers interesting, locally designed products from the island’s artists.

Visit an award-winning conservation centre and animal park

What began as a personal collection of parrots has evolved into an award-winning conservation centre and animal park that draws coachloads of visitors to its sub-tropical parkland. Hundreds of exotic animals are housed in many a high-tech atrium at Loro Parque, including gorillas, lions, penguins and dolphins. A full day should be set aside to do the park justice.

Insider tip: The two-hour Discovery Tour is a must; a guided tour behind the scenes sharing insider secrets about the animals, their peculiar habits and their park homes. Tickets for this tour have to be booked in advance.

Splash around in a huge water park

Siam Park isn’t just for children. Yes there are 12 creative and cleverly designed scream-inducers in this Thai-themed playground, but there’s also a long, lazy river, two white sand beaches, a spectacular wave pool and kids’ splash areas, plus VIP cabanas to retreat to for moments of calm sanctuary away from the aquatic melee.

Insider tip: Siam Park and Loro Parque are part of the same group. Buy Twin Tickets for both parks at the same time (online or at either venue) and you’ll save money, especially if you’re part of a big group or family.

Plan a beach day

Dozens of sandy stretches around the coastline have natural, black volcanic sand. If you prefer the more familiar golden version there are two iconic beaches - the Blue Flag Playa del Duque in Costa Adeje, and the palm-dotted Las Teresitas just north of Santa Cruz. If you prefer lounging with the locals however, try low-key La Jaquita in Alcalá, or the sheltered cove of Playa San Marcos in Icod de los Vinos.

Insider tip: Although fine on the tourist sands, females going topless can still be frowned upon on some of the more off-the-beaten-path beaches, so make a cultural judgement call based on those around you.

Stroll through a historic quarter

The historic quarter in La Orotava shows Tenerife’s noble past where well-heeled Europeans showed off their wealth with fancy carved balconies bolted onto their grand mansions. A prime example is the aptly named Casa de los Balcones (House of the Balconies). Dating from the 17th-century, it’s part heritage site, part living museum and part souvenir shop.

Insider tip: The Casa de los Balcones actually consists of three separate buildings so don’t forget to visit them all. Also remember to pick up your audio-guide headset, try a local glass of wine and sample the various mojo sauces – they’re all included in the ticket price.
