Beach Fossils Announce Fall 2023 North American Tour

Beach Fossils have announced a headlining North American tour in support of their latest album, June’s Bunny . After an August stint opening for Post Malone , they’ll hit the road with Turnover through October and November. See the band’s full itinerary below.

Bunny is the fourth studio album from the New York ensemble, arriving six years after its predecessor, 2017’s Somersault . Between those records, the band reissued its self-titled debut album to commemorate the LP’s 10th anniversary.

Beach Fossils Announce Fall North American Tour With Turnover

Beach Fossils announced that they’re hitting the road to tour in support of their June album Bunny . They’ll get support from Turnover during 24 shows across the U.S. and Canada this fall. See the full list of cities, dates and venues below.

Beach Fossils are actively wrapping up a tour with Post Malone .

Bunny was a gift to fans, arriving six years after 2017’s  Somersault . Beach Fossils released compilations and reissues in the time between. In a statement, the band says the songs on  Bunny reflect on depression, love, adventure, loss, mistakes, New York City and friendships coming and going.

Tickets for the North American tour go on sale Friday, August 11 at 10 a.m. local time.

Beach Fossils Outline Fall 2023 North American Tour

Acclaimed New York-based indie rock band Beach Fossils have announced they’ll embark on a headlining North American tour in celebration of their latest musical creation, Bunny, this October. The run–in support of their fourth studio album–will continue through the fall into November.

The indie darlings have been making waves recently, not only for their recent release but also for their notable opening slot for chart-topping rap sensation Post Malone this month. Riding on the heels of the exhilarating venture, Beach Fossils are primed to take center stage and share the momentum with Turnover, unleashing their melodic magic throughout an extensive tour spanning various cities across North America.

Bunny is a significant addition to the band’s discography, arriving six years after their 2017 album Somersault. This sonic journey showcases Beach Fossils’ growth and evolution, blending their signature dreamy soundscapes with fresh musical elements that captivate the imagination.

Notably, this isn’t the only milestone Beach Fossils have celebrated in recent years. The band also marked the tenth anniversary of their self-titled debut album, treating fans to a reissued version that paid homage to their humble beginnings and celebrated their remarkable journey in the industry.

Beach Fossils Unveil 2023 Headlining Trek

Beach Fossils have announced a 2023 North American Tour . The group will be joined by Turnover, who serves as the opener on the band’s headlining tour. The trek will kick off with a show at Variety Playhouse in Atlanta on October 24.

The tour news comes on the heels of Beach Fossils’ stint as an opener for Post Malone. After their time with Post wraps on August 19, Beach Fossils’ headlining tour will travel to Nashville, Houston, Los Angeles, San Diego, Chicago, Seattle, and many more major U.S. cities. The tour will come to a close with a show on November 30 at Knockdown Center in Queens, New York.

Beach Fossils have announced a Fall 2023 North American headlining tour in support of their fourth full-length studio album, Bunny .

After kicking things off by finishing up a string of dates opening for their friend Post Malone — who just released an album of his own — the band will head out on their headlining run beginning in late October. Joined by opening act Turnover , they’ll make stops in Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, and many more cities. Early next year, they’ll even hop across the pond for a number of European shows that were previously announced in July. Check out the full list of dates below.

A Live Nation pre-sale for the new dates will begin on Wednesday, August 9th (use access code TRACK ) ahead of the general on-sale slated for Friday, August 11th via Ticketmaster . Find tickets for all of Beach Fossils’ upcoming shows at StubHub . For their European dates, tickets are available through Viagogo .

In addition to general tickets, Beach Fossils will also be offering a special VIP package for their headlining shows, which will include a tote bag, an exclusive t-shirt, early entry to the venue, a setlist signed by one of the band members, and more. Bunny was the first proper full-length release from the band since 2017’s Somersault . In 2021, they dropped The Other Side of Life: Piano Ballads , a record made up of jazz rearrangements of their songs.

Beach Fossils Reveal Dates for 2023 North American Tour

Sprawling headlining tour will take place after a string of dates opening for Post Malone

Beach Fossils have announced a Fall 2023 North American headlining tour in support of their fourth full-length studio album, Bunny .

After kicking things off by finishing up a string of dates opening for their friend Post Malone — who just released an album of his own — the band will head out on their headlining run beginning in late October. Joined by opening act Turnover , they’ll make stops in Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, and many more cities. Early next year, they’ll even hop across the pond for a number of European shows that were previously announced in July. Check out the full list of dates below.

A Live Nation pre-sale for the new dates will begin on Wednesday, August 9th (use access code TRACK ) ahead of the general on-sale slated for Friday, August 11th via Ticketmaster . In addition to general tickets, Beach Fossils will also be offering a special VIP package for their headlining shows, which will include a tote bag, an exclusive t-shirt, early entry to the venue, a setlist signed by one of the band members, and more. Bunny was the first proper full-length release from the band since 2017’s Somersault . In 2021, they dropped The Other Side of Life: Piano Ballads , a record made up of jazz rearrangements of their songs.

Prehistoric adventures

Ever since the very first dinosaurs were discovered in the early 1800s, humans have been obsessed. Luckily, there are endless destinations around the world where dinosaur enthusiasts can get their kicks. Whether you fancy yourself as a budding Ross Geller, or you think geology rocks, there's a Jurassic destination awaiting your discovery. From beach fossil hunting to the world’s greatest natural history museums, these fascinating places are sure to bring out your inner paleontologist.

Deep History Coast, Norfolk, UK

Great Britain was once an abundant oasis for dinosaurs and it's thought that more than 100 different species once roamed the isle. Offering a piece of history dating back millions of years, the Deep History Coast in Norfolk is the perfect place to go hunting for fossils. Cromer Museum houses a fantastic fossil collection, but those wanting to get their hands dirty can head to the beaches at West Runton and Sheringham to see what can be unearthed from their rockpools.

Drumheller, Alberta, Canada

Nicknamed the Dinosaur Capital of the World, Drumheller has much to offer. Located in Alberta, Canada, the town is surrounded by the breathtaking Badlands, which appear plucked from a prehistoric landscape. In 2011, a 110 million-year-old nodosaur fossil was discovered here. Weighing close to 15,000 lbs (7,000kg), it took paleontologists six years to extract the skeleton, which is now on display in Drumheller’s Royal Tyrrell Museum, Canada’s only dedicated paleontology institution.

The Royal Tyrrell Museum is home to thousands of fossils and one of the world’s largest dinosaur displays. There’s a Preparation Lab, where finds are examined, as well as fascinating exhibitions and paleontologist-led fossil hunts. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday and advance booking is required. The town is also home to the world’s largest dinosaur, a 82-foot (25m) replica that visitors can climb for unobstructed views from behind its pearly whites.

Museum of Natural History, Berlin, Germany

Berlin’s Museum of Natural History is one of the world's most important research institutions. Home to an incredible exhibition hall, the museum boasts 30 million objects, including dinosaur skeletons, fossils and the remains of the ancient bird, Archeopteryx lithographica. Many of the items on display were extracted by the museum's scientists from Tendaguru Hill in Tanzania, an expedition now considered one of the most successful dinosaur digs in history.

Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK

The Isle of Skye is big on history thanks to its fossil-rich coastline. Across this dramatic Scottish island you’ll find plenty of places to see prehistoric footprints, frozen into the earth. An Corran beach in Staffin is perhaps the best place to get up close with authentic prints, left by a family of Ornithopods 165 million years ago. Offering history buffs the chance to touch the tracks, visitors are brought one step closer to our Jurassic past.

In 2015, there was also a major discovery on the Isle of Skye. Fossilized dinosaur prints were found on the shoreline near Duntulm Castle. Only visible at low tide, the prints are considered among the best in the world and are thought to be 170 million years old. Then, in 2018, researchers from The University of Edinburgh discovered more dino markings close to Brothers' Point. Staffin Dinosaur Museum is now the best place to learn and discover more about Skye’s prehistoric world. 

Isle of Wight, England, UK

Nicknamed the Dinosaur Island, the Isle of Wight is one of the richest areas for dino discoveries in all of Europe. In fact, evidence of over 25 species has been found here. Positioned off the south coast of Britain, dinosaur bones and relics are regularly discovered along the island’s 57-mile (92km) shore – and there are plenty of places to see them, including Compton and Brook beaches. The Dinosaur Isle Museum takes care of the area’s geological finds and runs regular expert-led fossil hunts – advance booking is advised.

Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum, Queensland, Australia

Australia was founded in 1788, but its history goes back much further. The most complete pterosaur ever found in Australia was discovered in 2017 in Queensland, and its remains can now be seen at the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum in Winton. The institution is home to the country’s largest collection of fossils, including 100-million-year-old sauropod tracks, and invites visitors to go behind-the-scenes at the most important Fossil Preparation Laboratory in the Southern Hemisphere.

Jurassic Coast, Dorset, UK

England’s Jurassic Coast stretches 95 miles (153km) between Exmouth and Old Harrys Rocks. Spanning the counties of Devon and Dorset, this spectacular strip of shoreline is England's only natural UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dating back 185 million years, the region is renowned for its rock formations, prehistoric fossils and dramatic limestone cliffs. From The Etches Collection – a museum of Jurassic marine life – to fossil hunting on the beaches between Charmouth and Lyme Regis, this patch of England has it all.

The Field Museum, Chicago, USA

Chicago’s Field Museum is home to the largest dinosaur discovered to date, the titanosaur Patagotitan mayorum. Named Máximo, the dino is 122 feet long (37m) and would have weighed more than 10 African elephants. Other highlights include the fossil skeleton of a 42-foot-long (13m) T. rex named SUE and Illinois’ state fossil, the Tully monster. From talks with real paleontologists to otherworldly dinosaur bones, this museum has something for everyone.

National Museum of Natural History, Paris, France

The National Museum of Natural History in Paris is ultimately one for history buffs that prefer a more serious look at our evolutionary journey. A sophisticated space of research and education, the museum started as the Royal Garden of Medicinal Plants, founded by Louis XIII in 1635, and has retained an impressive reputation ever since. The Palaeontology and Comparative Anatomy Gallery is the best place for dino enthusiasts, since it boasts 650 fascinating skeletons, including an authentic skull of a triceratops.

Badlands National Park, South Dakota, USA

PaleoAdventures is the ultimate day out for history buffs and budding paleontologists. The tour is run by Walter W. Stein, who has found more than 30 dino skeletons during his career spanning more than two decades. Tour guests will join Stein on a hunt for bones, as he provides the tools and guidance needed to uncover these ancient treasures. What's even better, visitors have the opportunity to take some of their finds home with them.

Tumbler Ridge Global Geopark, British Columbia, Canada

The ultimate place to uncover the beauty and history of British Columbia, Tumbler Ridge is also a spot for adventure. A designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Global Geopark is celebrated for its magnificent lakes, vast waterfalls and towering peaks, each harboring hidden relics and authentic dinosaur tracks. Footprints can be found at the Cabin Pool in Flatbed Valley, while the summit of Pinnacle Peak offers spectacular views and Permian Period fossils.

Colorado, USA

When it comes to dinosaur discoveries, nowhere compares to Colorado. This US state is home to an exciting collection of prehistoric artifacts and none is more important than Dinosaur National Monument that extends into Utah as well. This 2,500-foot (762m) canyon harbors countless dinosaur remains embedded in its sandstone cliffs. The Quarry Exhibit Hall is also a must, where 1,500 bones are left in place inside a huge cliff wall – timed tickets are required to enter the hall.

Elsewhere in the state, Picketwire Canyonlands is home to the largest collection of fossilized dinosaur footprints in all of America and offers nearly 1,300 tracks from 100 prehistoric creatures. Self-guided and expert-led tours are also available to Dinosaur Ridge, one of the world’s most famous fossil zones. During tours, visitors can get up close with real excavation sites and witness exposed fossils in situ, untouched for more than a million years.

Colorado's neighbor Utah has the most complete record of prehistoric life of any geographic area in the world. The state boasts more fossil records than anywhere else in America and has the most complete record of prehistoric life than any other area on the planet. Apart from the Dinosaur National Monument, Utah is also home to some of the planet’s best discovery sites. For one, 25 dinosaur species have so far been found inside Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

The biggest dino fans can take the 512-mile (824km) loop known as the Dinosaur Diamond Prehistoric Highway, stretching across Utah and Colorado. Along the way Moab Giants Dinosaur Park awaits with over a hundred life-size dinosaur replicas, self-guided Mill Canyon Dinosaur Trail follows in the footsteps of fossilized dinosaur tracks and Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry at Jurassic National Monument houses over 12,000 bones and an authentic dinosaur egg.

Crystal Palace Dinosaurs, London, UK

An important part of Victorian history, the dinosaur sculptures in Crystal Palace Park have been in situ since 1854. The large-scale installations were created by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins, a natural history sculptor, and it's reputed that Queen Victoria visited the site numerous times. Despite only a handful of more than 30 statues being technically accurate, this fun-filled and historic park represents the world's first ever attempt to model these incredible extinct creatures.

Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, Wales, UK

Well worth a visit for the sheer beauty of the landscape, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park in Wales is also home to its fair share of fossils. Proving that bigger isn’t always better, this strip of British coastline boasts thousands of tiny graptolites frozen in its ancient rocks, many of which can be found on Abereiddy Bay beach. These minute creatures actually predate dinosaurs and existed over 400 million years ago. The perfect place to head for a spot of fossil hunting, the area's spectacular coastal path is not to be missed.

Nova Scotia, Canada

The petite Canadian province of Nova Scotia is renowned for its rugged red cliffs and its iconic lighthouses (the island has 41), but also for its dino discoveries. One of the world’s smallest dinosaur tracks were discovered in Parrsboro in 1984, which led to the discovery of the largest fossil find in North America. Many of the fossils, including some of the oldest dinosaur bones in Canada, are now on display in the Fundy Geological Museum. 

The museum also boasts a working fossil lab, where you can watch scientists reconstruct the past. The museum also hosts dinosaur digs, where budding paleontologists have a chance to get hands-on with real field work. If you’d rather go it alone, head to The Bay of Fundy or the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Joggins Fossil Cliffs, where ancient fossils can be witnessed in situ.

American Museum of Natural History, New York, USA

No trip to New York City would be complete without a visit to the American Museum of Natural History. Founded in 1869, the impressive institution boasts one of the greatest fossil collections in the world. The museum runs self-guided tours of its renowned dinosaur exhibits, which include a 122-foot-long (37m) titanosaur and the nearly complete T. rex skeleton, recovered from Big Dry Creek in Montana in 1908. 

Cretaceous Park, Sucre, Bolivia

Known for its snow-capped mountains and glasslike lakes, Bolivia boasts a distinctive terrain that spans the Andes Mountains. In 1994 an incredible discovery was made by miners working in a quarry on the outskirts of Sucre. The Cal Orck’o limestone quarry wall was almost a mile long (1.5km) and featured over 5,000 footprints from over 150 different species of dinosaurs, including the world's only prints of a baby T. rex. Today, the fossils reside inside Cretaceous Park, which is usually open for guided tours.

Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Pattaya, Thailand

Nong Nooch Tropical Garden lies in the Chonburi Province of Thailand. The 500-acre botanical park is made up of astonishing tropical gardens as well as orchid nurseries and a vast area dedicated to bonsai trees and tropical palms. Yet Nong Nooch also boasts a rather unique feature: the Valley of the Dinosaurs. With more than 300 to-scale statues, each based on factual details, Nong Nooch brings us all one step closer to walking with dinosaurs.

Natural History Museum, London, UK

London's Natural History Museum is perhaps the world's most iconic place to learn more about our planet. Housed inside one of the city's most spectacular buildings, the museum dates back to 1881 and offers 80 million specimens spanning millions of years. No natural history museum would be complete without a dinosaur collection and London doesn't disappoint. It boasts the skeleton of the world's most complete stegosaurus, as well as part of the first Tyrannosaurus rex ever discovered. 

Dinosaur Valley State Park, Texas, USA

Glen Rose is often referred to as the Dinosaur Capital of Texas and for good reason. Millions of years ago, sauropods and theropods left footprints in the bed of the Paluxy River and these incredible tracks can still be seen to this day. One of the best ways to see them is to rent a kayak from Dinosaur Valley State Park and take a scenic journey down this ancient river. Guided horseback tours are also available with the Eagle Eye Ranch Carriage Company.

Galleta Meadows Estate, California, USA

If you're seeking culture as well as dino-related fun, then Galleta Meadows Estate ticks all the right boxes. Spread across 1,500 acres of ancient desert land in Borrego Springs, California, this unique Jurassic park is open 24 hours a day and is home to 130 large scale, meticulously crafted metal sculptures. Created by artist Ricardo Breceda, the sculpture park features saber-toothed tigers, raptors and mammoths, as well as an array of dramatic dinosaurs. 

That's not all Texas has to offer, though. Prehistoric Texas Trail takes visitors back 100 million years, while Fort Worth Museum of Science and History brings the fascinating story of the region's dinosaur discoveries to life. Even better, Waco Mammoth National Monument features a live dig site and from a bridge above the area lucky visitors can take in the unforgettable remains of ancient mammoths still half-encased in the earth.

Fun for the whole family, Cabazon Dinosaurs is one of America's most iconic roadside attractions. Located in the heart of a desert landscape in California, its outdoor trail features two towering dino models Dinny the Dinosaur and Mr Rex. The attraction opened in 1975 and has appeared in movies including Pee-wee's Big Adventure . It also boasts the Wafflesaurus Truck, which serves delectable dinosaur-themed treats to top off your trip. 

Universal Orlando Resort, Florida, USA

Universal Orlando Resort in Florida takes dinosaurs very seriously, housing an array of dino-related activities. While Universal's Islands of Adventure boasts the Raptor Encounter, where you can get up close with this fearful predator, the Jurassic Park Discovery Center™ is packed with incredible exhibits for the whole family. Visitors can marvel at T. rex fossils and see dinosaur eggs in the nursery, where a baby Velociraptor might just hatch before your eyes...

The second day of play of the FIVB World Tour event in Moscow has come to a close, with eight teams advancing onward to the quarterfinals of the competition.

In no surprise, many top teams are advancing on to the quarterfinals of the tournament. Bruno Schmidt/Alison Cerutti will move on as will the American duo of Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena, both easily sweeping their opponents.

The Latvian pair of Aleksandrs Samoilovs/Janis Smedins were able to take down USA’s Theo Brunner and Casey Patterson in three sets, 2-1, (30-32, 21-14, 15-10). The first set was a real burner for both squads, as it extended past the point regulation of 21 by 11 points.

Take a closer look at the plans for the main regions of Neom, Saudi's epic megacity project

• Saudi Arabia is plowing on with its ambitious Neom project, despite reported setbacks.
• The Kingdom has said "millions of cubic meters of earth and water" are being moved each week.
• Here's a closer look at the main regions that officials plan to build as part of the project.

Saudi Arabia 's futuristic and highly ambitious Neom megacity has been billed by officials as a place where people can "dream big."

First announced in 2017, Neom is being constructed in Tabuk, located on the northern tip of the Red Sea.

In February, the Kingdom released a promotional video sharing updates on Neom's progress. The video claimed the project was "progressing rapidly," adding that "millions of cubic meters of earth and water" were being moved each week.

Denis Hickey, the chief development officer for The Line, said: "We've done a lot of the foundation work literally and figuratively. We are ready to go. I think the construction of The Line is unique in terms of its industrialization and its modularized approach."

"We think there's an opportunity to create a better model for a city to interact with the landscape and nature and the environment and we think The Line is going to be an example to the rest of the world," Hickey said.

The kingdom has been funneling money into the 26,500 km² megacity, with costs projected to reach around $1.5 trillion for the development . The Line — a key part of the project — was planned to be finished by 2030, but recent reports suggest developers may be facing financial difficulties.

In February, The Wall Street Journal reported that Saudi Arabia was borrowing to help fund an array of ambitious projects, including Neom. A month later, Bloomberg reported that the Gulf kingdom has significantly reduced estimates for the number of people expected to settle in The Line .

Neom is the flagship project of the Vision 2030 plan announced by Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Saudi wants its Vision 2030 projects to boost residency, provide better opportunities, and help the nation diversify beyond fossil fuels — but it remains to be seen whether expectations will match up with reality.

Neom is designed to comprise several regions. Here's how officials say the city will be laid out.

The Line is the most well-known section of Neom.

Officials say the city is set to be contained within two 1640-foot-high mirrored skyscrapers positioned 656 feet apart. According to Neom's website, the city will have no roads, cars, or emissions and run on 100% renewable energy.

The city was originally planned to accommodate nine million people by 2030. However, Bloomberg reported that this estimate was recently downgraded to less than 300,000 people by the same deadline.

US studio Morphosis is reportedly working on the glossy city, with several more architects on board to design smaller sections .

Several e xperts have raised ethical issues about the city, claiming it could be fitted with Chinese technology to gather data on residents as part of a sweeping surveillance program.

Located on the coast of the Red Sea, Neom officials have announced plans for an octagonal city, which they claim will house a "next-generation" sustainable port.

If completed, the plan is for Oxagon, as it's being called, to spill partly into the sea, with a section set to float above on the shore. Neom officials have made the bold claim the floating part of the city will be the "world's largest floating structure."

Planners have also claimed the city will cover 48km² and house 90,000 people by 2030, as set out in the Vision 2030 plans .

Saudi officials claim Sindalah, a luxury island resort, will be the first region of Neom to be completed.

Developers have said they want the island to act as an "exclusive gateway to the stunning Red Sea," adding that they planned to welcome the global yachting community and luxury visitors.

The resort is set to feature several luxury spots, including a beach club, a spa and wellness center, and a yacht club.

Located in the mountains of the Tabuk region, Trojena has been designed to be Neom's ski and adventure resort.

Neom's website says the region will host 36 km of ski slopes. The site is also aiming to generate 10,000 jobs, per Neom's promotional site.

Saudi plans for Trojena to play host to 700,000 tourists annually by 2030.

The Gulf Of Aqaba

Saudi plans for the Gulf of Aqaba coast include several of Neom's main tourist destinations, including Epicon.

Plans for Epicon include an "ultra-luxury" hotel and resort and include a residential offering. Official statements say it will feature two towers, one 738 feet tall and another 902 feet tall.

If completed, the Gulf of Aqaba will include Leyka, a natural valley with three boutique hotels; Xaynor, an exclusive beach club; Siranna, a "luxury hospitality experience," and Aquellum, a community built inside a 1,476-feet high mountain range.

There are plans for the region to also host several other luxury escapes and wellness retreats.

Shmelovka: the 3rd place to hunt in Moscow

Hi everybody!

Today I’ll show you yet another distinct fossil hunting location within the city limits. It’s situated in the south-east in the direct vicinity of the Moscow ring road (city and regional border). The outcrops are located on the banks of the shallow Shmelovka (Shmelyevka) river, effectively a small fordable creek.

The location is rather depressive, attractive to crows and people with barbecue/alcohol/garbage dumping addictions. Most photos will probably contribute to that depressive feeling, but it’s mainly because they were taken last snowless winter

It looks different with snow and full of overgrown vegetation in summer, effectively a patch of wilderness

The fossil layers are numerous, in theory you can encounter everything from Oxfordian to Upper Tithonian. In practice, we are talking about mostly Panderi zone fossils , with the advantage you can gather them all year round, unlike Moskva river, which is only productive in winter. Unfortunately the place is naturally picked over and produces mostly belemnites and ammonite imprints.

As for me, the main point of interest was Upper Tithonian with a visible border between Subditus and Nodiger ammonite zones. When I looked around the place last winter, I found a small suitable outcrop. I visited the place a couple of times in winter and a couple of times recently, with the results I’ll be sharing here.

Having found these 2 ammos (Craspedites aff. kachpuricus) just lying on the ground, I decided to examine it further

The gray clay relates to Craspedites subditus ammonite zone, while the red one - to Craspedites nodiger. The red blocks below fell from the cave ceiling

That's how ammos are found in clay

Unfortunately they are mostly desintegrated and finding anything good-looking is exceptional

Even with a good imprint (on the right) the ammo itself is a pile of debris (on the left)

They are often "coalificated" leaving such 3D imprints (ammonite section below)

The place was full of slugs, so I had to take a pic of this modern mollusk guarding the fossil ones

As with other Upper Volgian ammos the green color is widely represented (ammonites: Craspedites sp., Garniericeras subclypeiforme)

But there's also golden ( Garniericeras: 1, 2, 4; Craspedites: 3)

And blue, everything turning whitish and silvery upon drying out

Belemnite preservation is peculiar: calcite is dissolved leaving only fragmacones. 

Protoconch is visible here (0,3mm or so)

Bivalves are found as steinkerns only

There are also brachiopods akin to those found in Fili park (Rhynchonella sp.), but as steinkerns, worms and even very small crinoid stems (1 mm in diameter)

Among the Academies: Catalyzing Possibilities

After more than 60 years studying chemical reactions and catalysts, Bruce Gates says UC Davis is a lot like a reaction that keeps itself going.

“People who see the benefit of an institution where people really are committed to each other — they work to keep it that way,” he said.

AMONG THE ACADEMIES

UC Davis has more than 50 faculty members who belong to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, a recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in research. The academies are among the most prestigious membership organizations in the world.

Each month, Dateline UC Davis will profile one of these faculty members in honor of their contributions to scientific research and knowledge.

Gates, a professor of chemical engineering, has been with UC Davis since 1992. His research has made bounds in the area of hydroprocessing, a tactic used to extract contaminants from fuel, commonly at oil refineries. Gates and his research group have made significant findings regarding the fundamental understanding of catalysts, materials that facilitate chemical reactions. Gates was first elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2007 before also being elected into the National Academy of Inventors in 2022. 

Cleaning up

Gates is a pioneer in the area of structurally well-defined catalysts, which are increasingly finding real-world technological application. He helped to identify “bottleneck” sulfur-containing compounds in petroleum through his work on fossil fuel conversion. 

The discovery, along with government regulations like the Clean Air Act, helped to limit the emissions of sulfur oxides from fuel combustion, drastically lowering  the possibility of “acid rain” and greatly increasing the quality of air. 

“The regulations have had an enormous impact and they've improved the quality of our environment,” Gates said. “The whole subject of what drives the technology has been evolving fast over the whole course of my career.”

His research on chemical reactions and catalysts began in the 1960s, when an undergraduate course at UC Berkeley sparked his interest. He earned a Ph.D. at the University of Washington in 1966 before spending the first half of his career at the University of Delaware.

Zooming in, zooming out

After joining Davis in the early 1990s, Gates helped expand the reach of the campus’ engineering programming. In 2007, he worked with then-department chair Robert Powell to launch a new freshman course in chemical engineering analysis.

“We're driven by opportunities for fundamental understanding at the same time as we're driven by the prospect of applications for new things, for new kinds of performance,” Gates said, noting that as academic engineers, “we can have it both ways.

“We can be doing something that's academic, that's fundamental, that gives students excellent opportunities to learn,” Gates explained, “but can be influential in a technological sense.”

And it’s that dual purpose of research and technological innovation with real-life applicability that Gates has developed over the course of his 30-plus years on campus. 

“The University of California is very strong and I appreciate the distinction,” Gates said. “There's something about the culture, the history, the people at UC Davis that is harmonious. And I think that there are a lot of people on our campus who have a sense for the uniqueness of that.”

“It's a very special place,” Gates emphasized, “and it's a privilege to be a part of it.”

The obscure but powerful politicians who control Florida’s energy

You might be reading this on a phone you charged at home last night or in a newspaper illuminated by lights in your kitchen.

Either way, you probably rarely think about the company that provides your electricity, unless there’s an outage or you receive a steep bill.

You likely think even less about the politicians who oversee those utility companies. But this obscure group of public officials, called the Florida Public Service Commission, has more power over your life — and the state’s contributions to climate change — than you may realize.

The five people who make up the commission decide how much utility companies are allowed to charge the public for electricity, a powerful role when Floridians have no alternative choices. Whichever company is the provider for the area where you live has a monopoly for that part of the state, which is a reason why they’re subject to state regulation. Some other states, like Texas, have different structures that allows the public to shop for their electricity provider.

The commission also has sway over what sources of energy utilities use to generate electricity, which has a significant impact on greenhouse gas emissions. For the Tampa Bay region, a recent report found the energy sector was the region’s No. 1 source of greenhouse gases , surpassing cars and other transportation.

Florida generates about 74% of its electricity from burning natural gas, which produces fewer harmful emissions than coal but is not as clean as renewable sources like solar. That’s a greater reliance on fossil fuels than the national average compiled by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, which found 60% of the U.S.’s electricity came from fossil fuels in 2023, while 19% was from nuclear energy and 21% from renewables.

While the state commission is largely out-of-sight, out-of-mind for regular Floridians, it’s slated to come to Tampa Bay this summer.

Customers of Duke Energy and Tampa Electric Co. will be able to speak at several scheduled hearings in Largo and Inverness (for Duke) and Tampa (for TECO) in June as the commission deliberates about the two utilities’ requests to raise base rates for consumers in 2025. Exact venues for the hearings have not been determined yet, but customers should receive notices with their bills.

They are the first local, in-person hearings for Duke and Tampa Electric customers in more than 10 years, in part because of a pause on in-person events during the pandemic, according to Sierra Partridge, regulatory supervisor and commission consultant. For local Duke customers, it’s been 15 years.

Here’s what you should know about how the commission works ahead of these hearings:

Who are the members of the Florida Public Service Commission?

• Art Graham, a former Jacksonville City Council member
• Andrew Giles Fay, a former chief deputy to Attorney General Pam Bondi
• Mike La Rosa, a former Republican member of the Florida House representing parts of Osceola and Polk counties
• Gary Clark, a former deputy secretary in the Florida Department of Environmental Protection
• Gabriella Passidomo, who previously worked in the commission’s office of general counsel the Florida attorney general’s office. She is also the daughter of state Senate President Kathleen Passidomo.

All were appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, though some were first named to the commission by his predecessor, U.S. Sen. Rick Scott.

The commission declined to make any of the members available for an interview, citing that state law prohibits them from discussing open rate cases.

Abraham Silverman, who used to work for New Jersey’s public service commission and now studies regulatory and legal hurdles to clean energy at Columbia University, said people started establishing these commissions about 100 years ago when they realized most utilities have monopolies.

“You would not want to go and negotiate with your power company on whether you’re going to buy the line coming into your house from them or their competitors,” he said. “You see pictures of old New York with 100 different power lines coming into every house ... it looks like a Charlie Chaplin movie. We need to regulate those monopolies for the public good.”

How do they make decisions?

The Florida commission’s procedures partially mimic court cases — there are dockets with records in rate cases that include expert witness testimony and cross-examinations. These months-long proceedings are how the commission rules on utilities’ requests to raise the base rates on their customers. Utilities can avoid the full extent of these proceedings by settling rate cases behind closed doors, which has become common in recent years. The commission must approve the settlement agreements.

Hearings can be filled with technical jargon and aren’t often user-friendly. Because of that, the Office of Public Counsel is a special representative for the public in these cases, designated to advocate for the best interests of Floridians paying utility bills.

Integrity Florida, a nonpartisan ethics watchdog group, released a report in 2017 that found Florida’s Office of Public Counsel had a smaller staff than states like Maryland, Michigan and Wisconsin, which have fewer residents than Florida. That report also concluded that the state commission routinely sided with utilities on their requests, arguing it has been “captured” by the industry it regulates, costing the public in the process. The commission pushed back at the time, saying it “vigorously stands to ensure that Florida’s consumers receive reliable, safe service at a reasonable cost” and its decisions “are made in the public interest.”

Walt Trierweiler, a former lawyer for the commission and a retired Army lieutenant colonel, serves as public counsel, after being selected by a committee in the Florida Legislature last year. His predecessor, Richard Gentry, resigned roughly halfway into his four-year term.

Prior to Gentry, the office had been helmed by longtime consumer advocate J.R. Kelly, who left after the Legislature imposed a 12-year term limit, at a time when Kelly had been in the job for more than 13 years. Kelly had previously raised objections over multiple rate increases.

“It’s not a secret that the utilities have a great deal of political power in Florida and have been able to get statutes that are beneficial to their interests and they’ve gotten favorable decisions at the Florida Public Service Commission,” said Bradley Marshall, a lawyer with the environmental group Earthjustice who often intervenes in cases before the commission.

How the commission affects you

The commission approves utilities’ requests to raise base rates — a major component of energy bills. It also approves requests to raise or lower the amount customers are paying for the fuel utilities use to generate electricity. In addition to seeking higher base rates, both Duke and Tampa Electric are asking the commission to lower the fuel costs for customers after natural gas prices have stabilized nationwide.

The commission also approves companies’ requests to build power plants over 75 megawatts, whose costs are also passed on to customers and whose energy sources contribute to how much greenhouse gas the state emits.

Susan Glickman, a veteran clean energy advocate in Florida who’s the vice president for policy and partnerships at the CLEO Institute, a climate group, noted that Duke Energy customers still pay a small “asset securitization” charge on their bills . That’s because of a disaster in which the company’s predecessor cracked the wall of a Crystal River nuclear reactor’s containment building, prompting Duke to shutter the plant in 2013.

“The Public Service Commission approves power plants and when they approve building a new gas power plant, then you’re locking in emissions for the life of that plant, which could be 40 to 60 or more years,” she said.

Silverman said how much responsibility public service commissions have for pushing their states toward cleaner energy depends on whether the Legislature has granted it to them. In the last 20 years, there’s been a movement to have public service commissions not just regulate utilities, but also create clean energy policy. Florida has some laws encouraging renewable energy, but doesn’t have any mandatory thresholds for renewables.

“In a lot of states, you see they take on the character of the governor who appointed them,” he said. “If you don’t have that kind of either political or legislative direction, then it’s very difficult for a public service commission to drive real policy reform because it’s literally not within their statutory authority.”

Regardless of any state’s structure, Silverman said more people are starting to grasp the importance of this historically “sleepy” area of government.

“Whether you’re an advocate who wants to really change the status quo and is worried about climate change, or a retiree on a fixed income, the public service commission determines what you pay, what the system mix is and is in charge making these tradeoffs,” he said.
